When it comes to this month, we’re ignoring the Brexit “deadline” and raising a toast to All Hallows Eve, grandparents and Oktoberfest fun, amongst other treats...

charities such as Age UK. Generations have so much to learn from each other so we encourage you all to celebrate this special relationship.
One thing’s for sure: our recent political pandemonium has offered plenty of tricks and scares. Halloween, which is believed to originate from the ancient Celtic festival Samhain, marks the start of the winter. Early Irish folktales describe how drunken farmer Jack was banished from heaven and hell after he died, walking in gloom until he made a lantern from a turnip and glowing coal... And we too want to offer a little light in the darkness, in our own way. We hope you enjoy our offerings this month, from half term pumpkin carving fun in your Ramblings to glitzy shows.
Another seasonal highlight we’ve adopted from overseas is Oktoberfest. Whether you’re taking a Munich minibreak or supporting your local pub or beer festival, keep it hoppy & happy! Also in the spirit of togetherness, we’re very happy to welcome Grandparents Day on 6th October. The brainchild of Marian McQuade in the 1970s, the day is becoming increasingly popular here on this side of the Atlantic, thanks to the efforts of older people’s champion
As the nights draw in, we’re all ready for cosy comfort so we hope you enjoy our bubbling autumnal cauldron of recipes, community events and more. As ever, we’re here to prove that – in spite of the fear – there is more that unites us all than divides us! Please visit www.roundandabout.co.uk

Promoting your event in Ramblings is FREE This month I will celebrate 16 years of marriage. For my anniversary "gift" my husband is sending me on a health & wellness retreat... 4,000 miles away. hedgerows
Our countryside & its wildlife is at risk. We encourage you to join the campaign to save our endangered hedgerows and share an exclusive extract from John Craven’s new book.
T
he hedgerows that criss-cross our countryside are not only an iconic sight, but a vital habitat and corridor for many of our native species. However, they are becoming increasingly fragmented which is threatening the wildlife that depends on them. We’ve lost about half our hedgerows since WWII. Although the rate of direct hedge removal has been reduced, hedgerows are being lost simply through how they are managed.
that depend on them, such as hedgehogs, bats, hazel dormice and song thrush.”
In Britain, habitat fragmentation is thought to be a limiting factor for the distribution of some species and a threat to others’ survival. Corridors play a vital role preserving a number of species deemed ‘at risk’. Some 16 out of the 19 birds included in the Farmland Bird Index, used by government to assess Many hedgerows the state of farmland wildlife, are are becoming associated with hedgerows.
“With 70% of UK land being agricultural, hedgerows offer the safest route for wildlife to travel across farmland,” says Megan Gimber, key habitats project officer at PTES. “Sadly, many hedgerows are becoming ‘gappy’, which fragments this amazing network. And, without more sensitive management, many hedgerows are at risk of being lost altogether. This is problematic, especially when we’re seeing a fall in numbers of the animals
“
‘gappy’
Healthy hedgerows reduce soil erosion, flooding damage and air and water pollution. They provide forage for pollinating insects, predators to keep crop pests in check and shelter for livestock, reducing deaths from exposure and improving milk yields. Hedges help us fight climate change by storing carbon and reduce the damage from flooding.

An extract from John Craven’s new book Headlines and Hedgerows is published by Michael Joseph
W
e have all heard that well-known piece of advice first coined by W.C. Fields: “Never work with animals or children.” Well, I’ve done both throughout my career (in fact, I couldn’t have succeeded without them!) so in my case at least that old adage is totally wrong.
I suppose one reason for my longevity is that I have never been very ambitious. I have not sought the headlines, never seriously courted celebrity nor been tempted to take chances on high-profile but potentially risky and short-lived programmes – apart from one, and that was Newsround, which was a six-week experiment in 1972. Thankfully it is still going strong so, as it turned out, it was not much of a gamble and a recent poll in Radio Times placed Newsround at number three in a list of the top 20 children’s programmes of all time. And Countryfile is often in the top 20 of mostwatched shows. During my 30 years there I’ve seen rural issues ranging from social isolation and deprivation to the way our food is produced climb higher and higher up the national agenda. That our audience is split pretty evenly between country dwellers and townies proves to me that, united as a nation in this at least, we want to preserve, protect and enjoy our glorious countryside... 10 | OCTOBER 2019
For my Countryfile interview with Prime Minister David Cameron, we met for an hour at Cogges Manor Farm, a rural heritage centre in his Oxfordshire constituency. The cameras were set up around the kitchen table and before he arrived a lady who seemed to be in charge of his “image” wanted to know where he’d sit. She checked the angles and saw a large Welsh dresser in the background. “Could we move some of those plates and ornaments,” she said. “It’s too fussy.” It proved that politicians have learned to be careful what’s behind them on screen. An exit sign, for instance, would be the last thing they wanted.
When Mr Cameron came in, dressed casually in a jumper – this, after all, was Countryfile – he said “I was brought up on you, John!” I don’t feel particularly old but it’s alarming when the man leading the country says you were part of his childhood! We had a wide-ranging conversation and he had no idea of the questions beforehand. I challenged him on his plan to make his administration the greenest government ever (which didn’t really happen) and overdevelopment threats to the landscape. “I care deeply about our countryside and environment,” he told me earnestly. “I’d no more put them at risk than I would my own family.” Today, I wonder what he’d make of the report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England revealing 15,500 new houses have been approved in areas of outstanding natural beauty in the years since. We also talked of his plans for a free vote in Parliament on bringing back hunting with hounds (which never happened) and persuading all other EU countries to enforce farm animal welfare laws as diligently as the UK (still waiting for that). I was impressed by his detailed knowledge of rural issues, even when pressed for details. A few months later at a Downing Street lunch for people involved in all aspects of the countryside, he smiled and said he hadn’t expected to be grilled by “a rural Jeremy Paxman.”

S TAR Q&A
Country smile Liz Nicholls asks broadcaster & dad John Craven OBE, 79, about his life & career ahead of his appearance at Guildford Literary Festival
Q.
We’re enjoying your memoirs. How’s it been looking back on your career? “It’s the first time I’ve written anything like this and took a bit of getting used to. All through my TV career I’ve had to keep my scripts short but the book gave me the chance to expand. There are chapters on everything from my childhood to Countryfile, taking in my time on Newsround and SwapShop – three TV ‘firsts’ and which I’m incredibly proud of. Some people would prefer to forget the shows that made them wellknown. Not me!” Q. What’s been your highlight? “There’ve been lots but one I recall in the book is when I knocked on a door and it was answered by a future saint... Mother Teresa. I went to the Mother House of her nuns in the Kolkata slums to make a film about her mission for both the dying and young orphans. She was wonderful.”
14 | OCTOBER 2019
Q. What one change would you make to benefit the countryside? “We need to stop young people leaving by building more affordable homes and amenities. Rural people have become isolated and we need to reverse that trend. More than a third of small farms have disappeared this century and many are struggling to survive. Unless we can attract more people to farming I worry for the future of our food production.” Q. Where’s your favourite part of the UK? “I was born and bred in Yorkshire and have lived in the North East, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire – all places with wonderful countryside. My favourite spot in Oxfordshire is Blenheim Palace with its spectacular grounds and walks. But my favourite part of rural Britain would have to be the Yorkshire Dales where I first came face-to-face with nature.” Q. Who would you most like to have worked with? “Thomas Telford is one of my heroes as he has had such an impact on our landscapes building canals, roads, bridges and viaducts.” Q. What are you reading now? “Airhead by Emily Maitlis. It’s a brilliant, often funny, behindthe-scenes account of her working life, written by one of Britain’s best television broadcasters. It proves she’s far from an airhead!” Q. What is your proudest moment? “Apart from becoming a father twice, receiving the OBE for services to children’s and rural broadcasting – the two areas that have defined my career.” John will talk about his memoir, Headlines & Hedgerows, at Guildford Book Festival on Tuesday, 8th October, 6.30-7.30pm, The Electric Theatre, Guildford. Book at www.guildfordbookfestival. co.uk or call 01483 444334.

Now established as an annual event, all work is inspired by the RSPB Farnham Heath.
The final pieces will be enlightening
Local emerging artists studying craft, fine art and textiles at the University for the Creative Arts have explored the wildlife, geology and history of the heath all year to develop a series of artworks that are temporarily placed on Farnham Heath and incorporated into a walking trail.
This year pieces include giant bird boxes, crocheted funghi, ceramic birds and a striking metal sculpture. There is also the added bonus of The House of Invisible Hands by sculptor Walter Bailey and a result of his research into historical forest glassmaking locally. Heathland Artworks is a Surrey Hills Arts project and provides a new way to view and learn about the heath. Visitors can get up close to each of the 18 | OCTOBER 2019
12 artworks by following a specially created trail. The project has given the students an invaluable experience in preparing a proposal, presenting this to a panel, and developing the necessary skills to create and install the works. Surrey Hills Arts aims to engage and inspire people in the natural landscape through the arts programme, promoting heritage, health and tourism. Programme co-ordinator for Surrey Hills Arts, Ali Clarke said: “It has been fascinating seeing the students develop their artworks in response to the wildlife and environment on the heath. “The final pieces will be enlightening for visitors of all ages providing pauses for thought along the route.” Heathlands Artworks is free to enjoy and open to visitors until 27th October at Farnham Heath which is next to the Rural Life Centre. Visitors are welcome to use the facilities. For more details visit www.surreyhillsarts.org

The exhibition offers a collective of local quality arts and craft as voted for by the public during Surrey Open Studios visits. Just under 300 artists participated in the open studios, with over 21,500 visitors in June. The top scoring artists have now come together for a programme of events. Thickened & discoloured fungal nails. What can I do?
N
ail Fungus Low level Laser Therapy.
At Waverley Foot Clinic one of our main treatment areas concerns Fungal Nail Infections. Fungal nail infections are increasing year by year. Once a nail has become infected an enzyme produced by the fungus allows the protein in the nail to be digested. This leads to the discoloration and thickening of the nail and a slow break of the nail structure. Once the fungus is present within a toe nail it starts to produce spores. The spores are released into the air and easily spread to other nails or even the other foot. The spores remain within socks and shoes which makes contagion a significant risk
as socks and tights are worn on both feet. Often the start of such an infection is not at first noticed. Many toe nails may have become infected before the extent of the fungal nail infection has been recognized. When a fungal infection occurs treatment is strongly advised as self-resolution is very rare leading to a long term chronic infection. LATEST REVIEW OF LUNULA ‘COLD’ LASER THERAPY - Kate (23rd April 18)

Nine months ago, I started treatment for nail fungus which I had endured for many years and had been unable to get rid of with treatments bought over the counter. I was given excellent advice and treatment and I am very pleased that my prolonged problem has been completely eradicated.

Instrument of
the mind Meditating using mantras is one of the most popular methods of meditation.
Moving homes your way. With 120 years experience, we know it’s not just a matter of moving things from A to B. It’s about the smallest detail and the greatest consideration. For generations, we’ve helped our valued customers move their way and we’d love to do the same for you.
I
t’s a wonderful way to anchor the mind. I’m a huge fan of the inspirational teacher and writer Deepak Chopra – and it was from his teachings that I learnt to meditate – by using mantras.
Chopra suggests that when you are meditating you are tuning into your mind rather than trying to escape it – and that meditation should be a way to get into the gap between the thoughts floating through your head. By focussing on and repeating a mantra silently you are able to achieve a state of inner calm and pure awareness – and thus enter a deep state of meditation. Mantra is a Sanskrit word – man is mind and tra is instrument. An instrument of the mind... I like tit! A popular mantra – and my favourite is So Hum (I Am). You can use this, just say “I Am” or your own words or positive affirmation such as “Stay Calm”, “Be Kind”. As always, it’s about what works for you! • Sit in a comfortable position with your hands in your lap or on your knees with the palms open and facing upwards. • Close your eyes and focus on your breath – inhaling and exhaling with ease. • Now introduce the mantra “So Hum” repeating it silently. • If you’re distracted by your thoughts or any noises, acknowledge them and gently bring your focus back.
Call us today or visit our website, and we’ll get in touch within 24hrs.
• Start by doing this for ten minutes and over a few days gradually increase the length of the meditation.
Farnham: 01483 906 200
• Release the mantra and focus on your breath - take a few moments to rest and then slowly open your eyes.

A
recent study by CIPHR, revealed 75% of working parents suffer from stress and anxiety as a result of their work/life balance. As a working parent myself, I know the feeling well. I also know that when I’m stressed there’s a knock-on effect on my children. The key is not to feel guilty about working, but to be organised so that the time you spend with your children is of real quality. That doesn’t mean whizzing from one activity to the next, but listening to your child, hearing about their adventures and worries. But how can you do that when home time is a rush from dinner to homework to bath to reading to bed? Fear not, schools can help and using them is not something you should feel guilty about. Here’s why… • Better than just breakfast. Before school care ensures that mornings are stress free. There’s no need for hurrying or worrying about being late, no dishes to wash and no panic when you open the fridge to find there’s no milk! Both parents and children start the day calmly. When your child is relaxed they concentrate better and consequently learn more. Starting the day with a hearty breakfast is a delicious added bonus. • Separating ‘work’ and ‘parents’ from working parents. It helps working parents separate their home and work life. No emails around the dinner table or juggling cooking with finishing that report that’s due tomorrow and hearing your 28 | OCTOBER 2019
child read all at the same time. It means when parents are with their children, they are exactly that – parents. • Healthy hobbies. Most schools will have a range of exciting clubs and activities on offer before and after school. At Highfield and Brookham we offer the usual arts and crafts, football, French and book club, but also some more unusual clubs such as yoga, judo, street dance, musical theatre and ukulele. These help children stay active, develop new skills and nurture new passions. • Socialising. Children have the space to build on existing relationships and foster new ones. They spend time with children from different classes outside formal teaching time. It gives them the opportunity to bond with other children with similar interests at the different clubs and activities. • Cuddles and care not admin and errands. Finally, evenings can focus on what is important – curling up in bed with a story! It allows parents to have family time rather than admin time with their children. At Highfield and Brookham we do the admin for you – afterschool snack, homework, clubs, activities and cook a lovely homemade dinner. Life success
Farnham-based Sophie Thomas is a wellbeing and life design coach for women who desire more and she has some great advice on how to get it
L
ike the body; our thoughts, feelings, beliefs and approaches to life also require detox, toning and nourishment. This primes us for optimum wellbeing, deep fulfillment and life success. That’s where Sophie Thomas’ unique and sought after specialism in wellbeing and life design comes in. We asked Sophie for her top tip to minimise stress and increase joy. Life is extremely beautiful yet it can be easy to forget this when we’re focused on challenges. We are also absolutely incredible. Again, this notion can seem foreign when the Make a to do list is never ending and it feels like we’re spinning our wheels. So here’s my difference to personal method for starting the day on how you feel the best foot and ending the day feeling about you fantastically fulfilled. This simple practice only takes a few minutes a day yet it has such a powerful impact.
“
Put two notebooks and a pen by your bed. One of the notebooks will be your appreciation journal, and the other is your achievements journal. Every morning - as soon as you wake up (before your thoughts come racing in!) - write a list of what you appreciate. It could be anything, for example: the way the sun is shining through the leaves outside, the softness of your pillow, your 30 | OCTOBER 2019
love for another or how someone was kind to you. Write as many as you can - this builds positive momentum and sets you up for the day. It also trains the brain to look for the many blessings we already have. The key is to let the feeling of appreciation make your whole being feel alive. Every evening before you go to sleep, write down all that you achieved that day in your achievement journal. When we stop to think just how much we’ve done, and who we’ve shown up as, it provides a sense of ‘enoughness’. Include the small acts like remembering to take your vitamin, sending a birthday card or giving a compliment that uplifted someone. Try to do this every day (conquer the resistance!) and see the difference it makes to your feelings about yourself and your life! The more you do it, the more benefits you’ll notice. If you miss a day, don’t beat yourself up - just get back to your routine and make the intention to enjoy the practice. It will serve you well! ● Sophie Thomas is the acclaimed Wellbeing & Life Design Coach for women who desire more. GREAT grandparents! Sunday, 6th October is Grandparents Day, what will you do to celebrate yours? Karen Neville explores…
S
adly my grandparents are no longer with us but I still remember fondly some of their wisdom and sage sayings and often smile as I hear myself talking to younger family members now. I clearly recall one of my grandmas chastising me after being told not to do something and my retaliating with “you old people think you know it all!” She simply replied with “that’s Let them because I do!” And that was the end of the conversation. know how
important they are to you
I’m not sure she knew it all but she certainly taught me a lot and shared a lot with me, not least her recipe for coffee and walnut cake.
An annual day to celebrate grandparents has been held in the UK since 2008 on the first Sunday in October. This year it’s on 6th October and is led by Age UK. 32 | OCTOBER 2019
My grandma was a big part of my life growing up and staying with her often and this day marks the important contribution made by many grandparents today to the wellbeing and education of children in their family. This is a great opportunity to say “thank you” to them. A childcare survey carried out by Gransnet found that 56 per cent of grandparents look after their grandchildren once a week or more with seven per cent taking on duties five days a week. Grandparents also often contribute financially, as well as through the unpaid care, with many chipping in for clothing, holidays and pocket money. So on 6th October how about showing how much you appreciate them in return? While a gift might be nice, just spend some time with them to let them know how important they are to you. Why not bake them a cake instead and show how much you have learnt..?

Cancer treatments, complementary therapies and marginal gains
C
onsiderable advances have been made in terms of treatment options and survival rates after cancer, but “cancer and its treatment often leaves a gruelling physical and mental legacy for years... .and many people are not living well... with multiple long-term conditions (Macmillan Cancer Support, 2013). In spite of trillions of dollars being spent on research and treatments since President Nixon declared war on cancer in 1971, recent global data shows cancer incidence and mortality are (still) rapidly growing worldwide and that by 2020 it is estimated nearly one in two of us will develop cancer in our lives (Macmillan Cancer Support, 2015). Is this acceptable? Does this not imply “that something is fundamentally wrong with the current accepted paradigms of cancer”? Calabrese, E.J – Journal of Cell Communication and Signaling 2019). Cancer is a complex multifactorial chronic disease. The evidence strongly suggests complementary approaches combined with modern medical treatments can significantly improve patient outcomes. This is not about an alternative approach but combining the best available evidence-based approaches from both modern and complementary medicine.

It’s about marginal gains: if you can achieve small improvements (e.g.1%) in multiple areas the cumulative gains will be significant. Tiny improvements can make a significant difference over time, as marginal gains compound. This is exactly the principle that revolutionised British cycling when Sir Dave Brailsford applied this rigorously from 2003 onwards. Between 2007 to 2017, British cyclists won 178 world championships and 66 Olympic or Paralympic gold medals and captured five Tour de France victories. So if this principle can transform a sport, what might it do for cancer? Why would we not, as a matter of course, always recommend complementary approaches posttreatment (when cancer patients require support), as well as reducing the risk of further complications? Autumn Sedums
Autumn brings us spectacular colours as deciduous trees and shrubs prepare themselves for their winter rest.
A
s well as coloured leaves, berries and stems there are also a few late-flowering perennials that look particularly good at this time of year. Asters were a topic I covered last year and I found – to my horror – that they had changed their name to Symphyotrichum which hardly rolls off the tongue and causes no end of problems for my RHS students! I remember when Senecio greyii changed to Brachyglottis just after I’d learnt it and refused to use it! Botanists have their explanations, of course, and I understand why sometimes plants have to be reclassified but why such complicated names? Sedum spectabile “Autumn Joy” Such a good name and so descriptive. A very hardy herbaceous perennial that’s reliable and easy to care for. It is adored by bees and butterflies and flowers alongside Asters, (Symphyotrichum!) Helianthus, Helenium, Rudbeckia and many others. The heads look good over the winter and protect the newly emerging shoots all winter. It can be divided and propagated in the spring easily and reliably. Walking around new Wisley last week up the meandering Piet Oudolf borders I was shocked to see the beloved Sedum specabile “Autumn Joy” (an easy to remember name from my youth and an easy to learn name by my RHS students) was labelled HYLOTEPHIUM!!I’m glad I found that before this went to press... more fun and games in the plant identification tests! I don’t think all Sedums have changed, just the upright ones as they evidently differ significantly from the creepy ones (?) Gavin is a cultural historian, specialising in Central European art and culture. He appears on BBC Radio 3, both as a guest and a presenter and on BBC Radio 4. Budapest was formed in 1873 by the unification of Buda and Pest. It became the focus of resurgent Hungarian nationalism which found expression through lavish new buildings, the continent's first underground railway system and myriad paintings featuring local Hungarians. Meanwhile in the countryside, composers Bartok and Kodaly began to collect the music of their compatriots. Placing these endeavours in a historical context, this talk explores Hungarian national identity. Doors open at 7.15pm with the lecture starting at 8pm.

M
uscular dystrophy is a life-altering condition that affects 70,000 people in the UK. It is a combination of more than 60 rare and progressive muscle-weakening and muscle-wasting conditions. Six years ago, Oliver and Tricia de Laszlo launched a nationwide campaign to help raise awareness for it. Oliver is himself an ambassador for Muscular Dystrophy UK in the South East, and their son Sammy is himself diagnosed with the Duchenne variety. After first-hand experience with MD, the family knew medical treatments could be a lengthy, expensive and drawn-out process. Due to the

rarity of these conditions, many professionals may never come across anyone who suffers from them. All of the proceeds from their event will help to support families and individuals by funding medical treatments for MD, alongside providing vital information,
advice, resources and care to those affected by it. People all across the UK will come together to “bake” the world a better place. Cake sales will take place in hundreds of community locations – from schools to workplaces and everywhere in between! If you also wanted to get involved, it’s incredibly easy to do. The Bake a Difference zone on www. musculardystrophyuk.org is full of downloadable resources and top fundraising tips, giving you the advice you “knead” to make your day extra fun! Don’t hesitate to get involved in this event inspired by this local family!
