O
ld buildings fascinate me – give me a Norman church or ye olde inn any day. Add a spooky atmosphere and beautiful countryside and I'm in my element. Ghostly Tales From The Riverbank is the theme of a walk on Saturday, 20th October as part of Chilterns Walking Festival. And there's lots more, from a Wombles litterpick to Fruit & Nut hunt! Find the full programme at www.visitchilterns.co.uk/walkingfest With so much tension and negativity in the air, it was great to hear from Philippa O'Connor recently about her efforts to reduce the use of single-use plastic. She runs The Good Fill in her spare time and is looking into developing it into a Community Interest Company if there is enough interest in Summertown. “In the meantime, it’s me, my husband and friends, and the good will of the local church who want to promote a more sustainable way of living.” On Saturday, 12th & 26th October, from 10am to 1pm, wander over with your tubs, detergent bottles or Tupperware to The Good Fill at St Michael’s Church in Lonsdale Road, to make the most of a pop-up stall selling unpackaged staple foods and household liquids. Goods are sold by weight or volume, which means you can buy as little
or as much as you want. The Good Fill will pop up on the second and fourth Saturday of each month. See you there! Oxford Art Society will welcome you to an open exhibition and young artists competition in The Cloister Gallery of St John the Evangelist (SJE) church in Iffley Road, OX4 1EH, between 2nd and 27th October. The exhibition will be opened by author Mark Haddon and is open Wednesday to Sunday, 10am-5pm. Visit www. oxfordartsociety.co.uk Soundabout is a registered charity that uses music to unlock the potential of children, young people and adults with severe, profound and multiple learning disabilities. A monthly pop-up choir brings people of all ages and abilities together to make music and form lasting connections. The next get-togethers are Sunday, 6th October, 3rd November and 1st December at North Oxford Association Community Centre, Summertown, OX2 7DP. All welcome, £5 donation. S TAR Q&A
Country smile Liz Nicholls asks broadcaster & dad John Craven OBE, 79, about his life & career as his new book Headlines And Hedgerows goes on sale
Q.
We’re enjoying your memoirs. How’s it been looking back on your career? “It’s the first time I’ve written anything like this and took a bit of getting used to. All through my TV career I’ve had to keep my scripts short but the book gave me the chance to expand. There are chapters on everything from my childhood to Countryfile, taking in my time on Newsround and SwapShop – three TV ‘firsts’ and which I’m incredibly proud of. Some people would prefer to forget the shows that made them wellknown. Not me!” Q. What’s been your highlight? “There’ve been lots but one I recall in the book is when I knocked on a door and it was answered by a future saint... Mother Teresa. I went to the Mother House of her nuns in the Kolkata slums to make a film about her mission for both the dying and young orphans. She was wonderful.”
10 | OCTOBER 2019
Q. What one change would you make to benefit the countryside? “We need to stop young people leaving by building more affordable homes and amenities. Rural people have become isolated and we need to reverse that trend. More than a third of small farms have disappeared this century and many are struggling to survive. Unless we can attract more people to farming I worry for the future of our food production.” Q. Where’s your favourite part of the UK? “I was born and bred in Yorkshire and have lived in the North East, Gloucestershire, Buckinghamshire and Oxfordshire – all places with wonderful countryside. But my favourite part of rural Britain would have to be the Yorkshire Dales where I first came face-to-face with nature as a child.” Q. Who would you most like to have worked with? “Thomas Telford is one of my heroes as he has had such an impact on our landscapes building canals, roads, bridges and viaducts.” Q. What are you reading now? “Airhead by Emily Maitlis. It’s a brilliant, often funny, behindthe-scenes account of her working life, written by one of Britain’s best television broadcasters. It proves she’s far from an airhead!” Q. What is your proudest moment? “Apart from becoming a father twice, receiving the OBE for services to children’s and rural broadcasting – the two areas that have defined my career.” Q. Do you consider yourself healthy? “I don’t do anything special but I try to make careful choices and be sensible. I also walk a lot, but that’s it. Until a few years ago I went to the gym regularly but I don’t feel the need to any more.” Headlines & Hedgerows is published by Michael Joseph. Visit www.roundandabout.co.uk

DENTISTRY
Teeth wisdom
Cosmetic dentistry is booming – so make sure you choose the right expert to help you achieve the smile of your dreams
W
hether you have crooked teeth, gaps in your smile you’d like to close or just want whiter teeth, dental practices have never offered so much choice. Those megawatt celebrity smiles you see on television, in films and magazines might give the impression that anyone can have the perfect smile. However, sometimes the cosmetic changes you might have your heart set on might not be possible. It’s important to seek appropriate assessment from experienced and appropriately trained clinicians. When you’re going to spend a lot of money on your mouth, you want to know the results are going to be great and long-lasting. In the worst case scenario, it means massive expense and irreversible damage to sometimes healthy teeth. Patients must understand the risks involved, the alternatives on offer and have all the correct information. Proper consent is important. On a more positive note, cosmetic dentistry can be life-changing. Crowns, veneers, implants and adult orthodontics are all on the rise and facial aesthetics such as fillers and anti-wrinkle treatments are available in most dental clinics. Adult orthodontics are popular and many systems evade the need for traditional “fixed” braces. Invisalign is booming (again, an appropriately trained practitioner is vital). 3D scanners will show you the proposed outcome instantly.

Whitening is now considered simple and safe. There have been changes in the amount of gel which can be used. Composite bonding is also a brilliant, costeffective path to a lovely smile, one of the most popular ways to deal with worn teeth, chips and cracks. Non-invasive and instant, it’s a better way to deal with minor issues without drilling. Whatever option is chosen, good aftercare and follow-up is essential. Regular appointments with a hygienist, being shown how to look after your teeth and brushing habits are hugely important. Befriending service Home-Start Oxford has been providing life-changing work with families for more than 30 years and puts its success down to its dedicated volunteers
T
he charity’s volunteers help families in the city, central and west Oxfordshire who are struggling to cope for a variety of reasons, by offering support and practical and emotional help. The 35-strong team are supported by staff whose work has been recognised at the 2018 Oxfordshire Charity and Volunteer Awards. Experienced volunteer Trudi has been supporting families with Home-Start Oxford for 15 years. “The most noticeable thing for me is that there is far more pressure on families now,” she says. “Many parents have to juggle work with child-rearing, while they have
seen resources such as the children’s centres close and childcare costs rise. I’ve noticed parents need more and more support to gain the confidence to talk, sing and play with their very little ones – even the most ‘educated’ people are all starting from the same point when you become a new parent and it’s hard when you’re exhausted.”
Trudi says ongoing training – such as Mental Health First Aid with Restore – has made her feel very well supported. “I was worried I might be seen as ‘too old’ to volunteer like this, but my coordinator has reassured me my experience and time are valued.” Home-Start Oxford would like to hear from people who are interested in joining the volunteer team. No special qualifications are needed but volunteers are usually parents or grandparents. For further information and to enquire about volunteering, call 01865 779 991 or email admin@homestartoxford.org.uk. Also visit www.home-startoxford.org.uk
Are you a mum, dad, grandparent or carer ? Thought about using your skills and experience to volunteer? Could you spare 2-3 hours each week? Home-Start Oxford’s community network of trained volunteers help families with young children through their challenging times. By offering friendship, practical support and a listening ear, you could be the vital support a family needs and make a big difference to their lives.

FAMI LY FUN
Science
& ideas
From Friday 18th to Monday 28th October, the funky IF Oxford invites you to enjoy activities at more than 30 venues including the Oxford University Museum of Natural History, City of Oxford College’s Technology Campus and some great pubs, too!
O
ctober is your chance to explore cutting-edge research from worldleading academics, uncover big ideas and ask even bigger questions about science, humanity, the world at large and beyond.
See the earliest animals on earth in an art exhibition (First Imprints, from 19th Oct), go “speed-dating for ideas” at Waterstones (24th Oct), or perform life-saving operations (in a board game) at the Old Fire Station (Mon 28th Oct).
There’s hands-on science for all ages at the Westgate Wonderlab on Saturday 19th and, at the Explorazone in Oxford Town Hall on Sunday 20th, find out how identical twins differ, discover the secret powers of super-hero worms and consider what the avatar you choose says about you while evil cyborg sea monsters take to the stage.
With massive fossils being unearthed even now, hear the latest research on whether dinosaurs had colourful feathers and learn about fossilised dung (The Dinosaurs Rediscovered; 23rd Oct); explore time in an immersive multi-sensory performance (The relentless approach of better times; 24th Oct); experience an audio tour as Oxford’s “sonic landscape” reflects an environmental crisis (Only Expansion; 25th Oct); or save penguins (The Crowd and The Cosmos; 25th Oct) as you head to the edges of the universe with BBC astronomer and presenter of The Sky and Night Professor Chris Lintott.
Build a robot to compete in a Robochallenge or enjoy Science at the Shops (Saturday 26th & Sunday 27th Oct; Templars Square); explore particle physics with Minecraft or use a smart phone to investigate human anatomy. The body is an extraordinary system – watch a powerful duet between Joel Brown of Candoco Dance Company and Eve Mutso, former Principal Dancer of Scottish Ballet in a beautiful performance called 111 (one hundred and eleven). 111 is the imaginary number of vertebrae that Joel and Eve have between them: Eve “moves like she has a hundred” while Joel’s spine is fused and he jokes he only has 11. 16 | OCTOBER 2019
Hold meteorites and moon rock (Apollo@50; 26th & 27th Oct); watch researchers battle for the Iron Crown (Fe Fi Fo Fum; 25th Oct), hear about new elements (Superheavy; 25th Oct) or enjoy escape rooms, comedy, poetry, music and more. COMEDY
Crash & Byrne
Offering plenty of tricks and treats, Jason Byrne bring his new show – Wrecked But Ready – to Oxford Town Hall on Thursday, 31st October
“P
eople buy my tickets because they say I’m a guaranteed laugh, and people need laughter... That’s why I can’t go on and selfishly talk about my own misery.”
Jason, who will go on stage wearing a dinner jacket on the top, underpants on the bottom, is an inspired improviser. Appropriately for the date of his Oxford show, he has an excellent Brexit routine.
So says the dazzlingly energetic Jason Byrne, named “King of Comedy” by The Times, ahead of his UK live dates. The comedian, who has starred in Live at the Apollo (BBC1), The Royal Variety Show (ITV1), Don’t Say It, Bring It (Dave), and Wild Things (Sky), thrives on the unpredictability of stand-up.
“I imagine Britain is a little girl misbehaving because she won’t leave. Brussels says to her ‘OK, Britain, what the hell is going on?’ I fall to my knees and say, ‘We’re going to stay.’ ‘OK’. ‘Actually, we’re going to leave!’ I also imagine Boris talking to Brussels, and he keeps saying mad stuff like ‘I like monkeys’. If you turn politicians into children, you realise they’re the same thing!”
Jason, who is also a judge on Ireland’s Got Talent (TV3), gives us an example that always goes particularly well. “I love audience participation because
unpredictable things happen. The great thing is audiences are not trained and not used to being on stage.”I do a simple thing where I get three guys on stage. One talks about his job, the second translates using a made-up sign language and the third explains it using interpretive dance.”

What is hard water?
Before
After
If you live in a hard water area you will probably know about hard water problems; limescale covered surfaces, inefficient appliances, products that don’t lather well in water and skin that never feels smooth.
Y
ou might not even realise it’s hard water causing it. The magnesium and calcium minerals that make up the ground cause the water to be hard. This then runs through your pipes and appliances and the effects can be seen around your home. *Over 200ppm is considered hard
The 7 wonders of Harvey Water
Put your feet up and relax this Autumn. Enjoy limescale free surfaces around the home and more efficient appliances. With a water softener, you will spend less time cleaning, which equals more time doing the things you love - come rain or shine. With Harvey Water, you can reverse the effects of hard water. Products will last longer and lather better; giving you a more enjoyable and relaxing bath. You won’t use as many products throughout the home - saving money on bills in the long run. You and your family can also enjoy softer skin and glossier hair. Sound tempting? It’s all possible with the installation of a Harvey Water Softener.
to spew water everywhere. Since having the water softener installed, we haven’t replaced it in months. We were skeptical at first, but after having a demonstration we could feel the difference. We have noticed a difference, particularly using less shower gel and shampoo. Hair is softer and feels cleaner, you can definitely feel the difference. The entire process has been great!”

WOOD S
Awesome autumn ! Katy Dunn of the National Trust tells us why we should enjoy a local wood this season
A
utumn casts a new light on familiar landscapes. When trees blaze with orange, red and gold, shady woodland is transformed into a dappled golden path. Nature’s last hurrah before the long sleep of winter, it feels rude not to enjoy the show. I’m lucky enough to work for an organisation that loves and looks after woodlands. The National Trust cares for more than ten million trees across the country and last year we funded 38 different tree and woodland projects across the South East. Everyone is welcome in the woods we look after. We want them to be loved, explored and enjoyed by as many people as possible. are also things we can all do to help It feels rude not There look after woodlands, such as taking our to go & enjoy litter home, picking up after our dogs, not allowing them to chase wildlife or disturb the show nesting birds and keeping to the paths.
“
A mature oak tree has about 700,000 leaves, providing food for the tree and enough oxygen for 10 people for a year. As leaves start to die, the tree takes back reusable proteins and green chlorophyll, revealing the yellow and red pigments produced by sugars remaining in the leaf. The best and most long-lasting colours develop with warm, bright days and cold nights, slowing the transport of sugar from the leaf. Try to catch a falling leaf – it’s trickier than you think! A good way to identify wildlife is to look for nibbled nuts; an excellent 20 | OCTOBER 2019

Hanna Pulidori finds out more about Oxford Paddlers for Life which helps people affected by cancer

n ancient Chinese tradition, dragons were seen as the rulers of water. What could be more empowering than reconnecting with our bodies and this mythical spirit at the same time? Dragon boating is a fun team sport that is full of camaraderie. It is also accessible to people of all fitness levels – including individuals who are going through or have finished treatment for primary and secondary breast cancer. Oxford Paddlers for Life are a charity which understand the importance of supporting the mental and physical health of people who have been afflicted by cancer.
In addition to providing the facilities and training necessary for dragon boating, the group also provides a safe, supportive place for people to meet others in a similar situation. Candice says: “It has been so great getting active again, while enjoying stunning views on the canals and
making great friends in the process. Being out on the water gives me a lovely sense of peace and calm…” The charity is one of 14 in the UK, which provides members of the community with the opportunity to attend dragon boat festivals and meet other breast-cancer support teams. However, racing is not their aim: it’s all about gentle exercise and letting people go at their own pace. The group aim to paddle on Tuesdays and Saturdays, and often stay for a drink at the Isis pub in Iffley afterwards. Everyone is welcome to be part their family, simply visit www.oxfordpfl. org and register, and they’ll be in touch.

hedgerows
Our countryside & its wildlife is at risk. We encourage you to join the campaign to save our endangered hedgerows and share an exclusive extract from John Craven’s new book.
T
he hedgerows that criss-cross our countryside are not only an iconic sight, but a vital habitat and corridor for many of our native species. However, they are becoming increasingly fragmented which is threatening the wildlife that depends on them. We’ve lost about half our hedgerows since WWII. Although the rate of direct hedge removal has been reduced, hedgerows are being lost simply through how they are managed.
that depend on them, such as hedgehogs, bats, hazel dormice and song thrush.”
In Britain, habitat fragmentation is thought to be a limiting factor for the distribution of some species and a threat to others’ survival. Corridors play a vital role preserving a number of species deemed ‘at risk’. Some 16 out of the 19 birds included in the Farmland Bird Index, used by government to assess Many hedgerows the state of farmland wildlife, are are becoming associated with hedgerows.
“With 70% of UK land being agricultural, hedgerows offer the safest route for wildlife to travel across farmland,” says Megan Gimber, key habitats project officer at PTES. “Sadly, many hedgerows are becoming ‘gappy’, which fragments this amazing network. And, without more sensitive management, many hedgerows are at risk of being lost altogether. This is problematic, especially when we’re seeing a fall in numbers of the animals
“
‘gappy’
Healthy hedgerows reduce soil erosion, flooding damage and air and water pollution. They provide forage for pollinating insects, predators to keep crop pests in check and shelter for livestock, reducing deaths from exposure and improving milk yields. Hedges help us fight climate change by storing carbon and reduce the damage from flooding.

An extract from John Craven’s new book Headlines and Hedgerows is published by Michael Joseph
W
e have all heard that well-known piece of advice first coined by W.C. Fields: “Never work with animals or children.” Well, I’ve done both throughout my career (in fact, I couldn’t have succeeded without them!) so in my case at least that old adage is totally wrong.
I suppose one reason for my longevity is that I have never been very ambitious. I have not sought the headlines, never seriously courted celebrity nor been tempted to take chances on high-profile but potentially risky and short-lived programmes – apart from one, and that was Newsround, which was a six-week experiment in 1972. Thankfully it is still going strong so, as it turned out, it was not much of a gamble and a recent poll in Radio Times placed Newsround at number three in a list of the top 20 children’s programmes of all time. And Countryfile is often in the top 20 of mostwatched shows. During my 30 years there I’ve seen rural issues ranging from social isolation and deprivation to the way our food is produced climb higher and higher up the national agenda. That our audience is split pretty evenly between country dwellers and townies proves to me that, united as a nation in this at least, we want to preserve, protect and enjoy our glorious countryside... 26 | OCTOBER 2019
For my Countryfile interview with Prime Minister David Cameron, we met for an hour at Cogges Manor Farm, a rural heritage centre in his Oxfordshire constituency. The cameras were set up around the kitchen table and before he arrived a lady who seemed to be in charge of his “image” wanted to know where he’d sit. She checked the angles and saw a large Welsh dresser in the background. “Could we move some of those plates and ornaments,” she said. “It’s too fussy.” It proved that politicians have learned to be careful what’s behind them on screen. An exit sign, for instance, would be the last thing they wanted.
When Mr Cameron came in, dressed casually in a jumper – this, after all, was Countryfile – he said “I was brought up on you, John!” I don’t feel particularly old but it’s alarming when the man leading the country says you were part of his childhood! We had a wide-ranging conversation and he had no idea of the questions beforehand. I challenged him on his plan to make his administration the greenest government ever (which didn’t really happen) and overdevelopment threats to the landscape. “I care deeply about our countryside and environment,” he told me earnestly. “I’d no more put them at risk than I would my own family.” Today, I wonder what he’d make of the report by the Campaign to Protect Rural England revealing 15,500 new houses have been approved in areas of outstanding natural beauty in the years since. We also talked of his plans for a free vote in Parliament on bringing back hunting with hounds (which never happened) and persuading all other EU countries to enforce farm animal welfare laws as diligently as the UK (still waiting for that). I was impressed by his detailed knowledge of rural issues, even when pressed for details. A few months later at a Downing Street lunch for people involved in all aspects of the countryside, he smiled and said he hadn’t expected to be grilled by “a rural Jeremy Paxman.”

Line the bottom of a baking dish (about 24 x 17 cm/9½ x 7 in) with some of the ragù, cover with a layer of lasagne sheets, then add a layer of ricotta, scatter over some sausage slices and pieces of mozzarella, then add another layer of ragù. 30 | OCTOBER 2019

Stunning scenes Local photographer Andy Prior has captured the natural beauty of the Oxfordshire countryside in his new book
O
xfordshire in all its glory has been captured in a series of stunning photographs by Andy, displaying the county at its best through the seasons. The county boasts many beautiful features and attractions and Andy’s particular interest in outdoor and landscape photography shows Oxfordshire off to the full. Andy, who lives in Witney, explores the countryside in all weathers, often visiting same location more than once to Making an image the capture it at different times and in is a wonderful different conditions. This is part of his mission to capture the unique moments experience many of which have made it into his new book Oxfordshire in Photographs. He says: “This has been a fantastic creative outlet for me to showcase Oxfordshire’s natural beauty and to explore areas local to me that I had not yet discovered.” Andy hopes the images will inspire people to get out and explore the locations themselves, whether they are photographers or just want to explore the

stunning scenery Oxfordshire has to offer. He explains how he set about compiling the images for the book by scouring OS maps and planning at what time during the year would be best to visit each location adding that landscape and outdoor photography can be frustrating. “Hours of planning and early starts in the hope of some interesting light or conditions, only to leave disappointed when the sought-after conditions don’t materialise. “When your effort is rewarded and all the elements come together, making an image from these moments is a wonderful experience.” Here (above) are just a few of Andy Prior’s images of Oxfordshire through the seasons showing the splendour of Oxford city, the majesty of the countryside and the serenity of the river and what must be one of the last published pictures of the Didcot Power Station towers which were demolished in August. Oxfordshire in Photographs is available at many bookstores and online from the publishers at www.amberley-books.com
