I turned on the telly to watch a play called Harry’s Christmas by Steven Berkoff. It’s set a few days before Christmas. Harry is waiting for someone – anyone – to get in touch.
H
owever, as the big day arrives Harry realises he's very much on his own. And he falls into the kind of despair only the very lonely know. Harry’s Christmas left a deep impression on me and I now take care to remember those who might be on their own at what is supposed to be the most wonderful time of the year. Perhaps you can check on a neighbour or phone an elderly relative? It might make their day. And, as a little ‘thank you’, I present to you my festive gift – a new batch of old cracker gags! Wishing goodwill to all. Q) What does Santa do when his elves misbehave? (A) He gives them the sack! (And we’re off with a zinger!) Talking of vacancies in Lapland… invitations are being sent out to help Santa’s depleted workforce make toys. When you arrive in the forest, Elf passports will be waiting for you to a magical, immersive journey where you can go ice skating, decorate gingerbread, meet the resident huskies and reindeer, and visit Pixie Mixie’s sweet shop before a personalised meeting with the man himself. Once again LaplandUK will open its doors at Whitmoor Forest in Swinley Road, Ascot, for another season of merriment. It certainly isn’t cheap (prices start at £79 per person in December) but it is supposed to
be exceptional and was voted best family day out by Little London magazine for the second year running. It runs until Tuesday, 24th December, and for more details visit www. laplanduk.co.uk Q) What do you get if you cross a bell with a skunk? (A) Jingle smells! And talking of popular carols, kind of… it’s nearly time for carols and songs courtesy of the Spotlights Musical Theatre Group. That’s What I Call Christmas is the name of the entertainment taking place at the Ascot Life Centre in New Road, North Ascot, from Thursday 12th to Saturday 14th December. Expect lots of traditional vocal delights, as well as the crucial mulled wine and mince pies, with performances on the Thursday and Friday at 7.30pm and 2.30pm on the Saturday. For ticket details call 07568 383 133 or visit www.spotlightsmtg.co.uk
Q) What do you get if you eat Christmas decorations? (A) Tinsilitis! (Drink more… I’ll get funnier!) A rather special festive event is taking place on Saturday, 14th December as Opera Piccolina present A Celebration of Christmas. Professional solosits will perform some of

the best-loved seasonal songs and sacred music inside the beautiful setting of The Priory Church at Ascot Priory. Of course, the audience will also be expected to play its part and join with the company in a selection of carols accompanied by the impressive church organ. Tickets cost £19.50 and, I am very pleased to note, the price includes a glass of wine or soft drink and that all-important mince pie. It starts at 7pm and either call the box office on 01344 882 445 or visit www. operapiccolina.co.uk Q) Who’s Rudolph’s favourite pop star? Give up? (A) Beyon-sleigh! (I am almost deafened by your groans… where’s the goodwill, people?!) And talking of wonderful singers… Sheila from the Runnymede Jazz Club to tell about a show from a new band headed up by the fab singer Dorine de Wit. Dorine and her musicians will be taking centre-stage on Friday, 13th December, from 8pm at the club found in Chertsey Hall, Heriot Road, Chertsey. To add to the fun guests are also encouraged to decorate their tables to be in with the chance of winning a Best Christmas Table prize! Tickets cost £11 (non-members) and £9 (members) and for more details call the box office on 01784 431 348 or visit www.runnymedejazzclub.com
Q) Who was the best financier in the Bible? (A) Noah – he kept his company afloat while the rest of the
world was in liquidation! Turning to the real reason for the season… Holy Trinity Church in Sunningdale has a busy week in the lead-up to the big day. On Wednesday, 18th December, it hosts the local Charters School's Festival of Nine Lessons & Carols from 7pm. On Sunday, 22nd December, there’s a carol service from 6pm followed by mulled wine and mince pies, while on Christmas Eve (Tuesday, 24th December) Christingle Services will take place at 3.30pm and 5pm followed by a magical Midnight Communion Service starting at 11pm. Then, on Christmas Day, a Family Communion takes place at 10am. All are very welcome along. For more details on this and more please visit www.holytrinitysunningdale.co.uk Q) Why did the bauble get addicted to Christmas? (A) He was hooked on trees his whole life! And talking of trees and nature… an exhibition capturing some of the beauty of the area around Cumberland Lodge in Windsor Great Park can be enjoyed in an open morning on Saturday, 14th December, 9-11am. As we featured last month, In the Heart is the name of the collection of sketches and drawings by local artist Christina Al-Wakil who will be present on that Saturday to talk about her work. Until recently Christina was a member of the housekeeping team at Cumberland Lodge while working as an artist and jazz musician. It’s free to pop along and for more details visit www.cumberlandlodge. ac.uk

avourite panto stars are helping to make all your wishes come true in Aladdin at the Theatre Royal, Windsor. Hop on board the magic carpet ride of a show, rub the lamp to summon up the Genie and see what happens! A glittering cast of stars are treading the boards this year including some panto favourites Paul Nicholas as the evil Abanazar and musical legend Marti Webb, not forgetting some ‘boom, boom’ from Basil Brush! Tickets start from £17, call the box office on 01753 853888 or visit at www. theatreroyalwindsor.co.uk/aladdin/ It’s not just about the professionals there are some highly entertaining and well-produced amateur dramatic shows too well worth seeing

King Cactus and Queen Marigold are delighted, the townspeople of Muddlebury On The Marsh ecstatic at the birth of the Royal couple’s longawaited child, Princess Rose in Sleeping Beauty. A party to celebrate has been arranged, everyone has been invited, everyone except The Bad Witch Hazel who, on the news of no invite, places a curse on the infant child that will take place before Princess Rose’s 16th birthday. Will the villages save her, will Fetch and Carrie protect her, will Dame Hetty Harpic find true love and is there jam for tea? Enjoy laughter, songs and dance and see whether good wins over evil at the Quince Players 2020 pantomime, Sleeping Beauty. See the panto from 9th-12th and 15th-18th January at Cordes R&A | 9

Younger panto goers will also recognise CBBC star Mischa Eckersley who joins as Princess Jasmine. And

Tickets from £13, book at www.atgtickets.com/woking or call 0844 871 7645. The biggest stars of Leatherhead Theatre’s Sleeping Beauty will be some of its smaller cast members as many of the town’s youngsters will be showcasing their talents in this classic tale. Tickets from £18.50 adults. At every house Father Christmas eats and drinks the tasty treats that have been left for him. But when he reaches number 10 he realises that he’s forgotten to do something rather important and he really, really, really needs a wee! TaleGate Theatre Productions hit the perfect combination of witty humour, fantastic music and the extra sparkle for which they have become known in this fabulously funny and brilliantly bouncy musical adaptation of Nicholas Allan’s much-loved book Father Christmas Needs a Wee. This is a 45 minute production followed by a meet and greet with the big man himself where the children will receive a Christmas present. Cleo has been in touch to tell us about a free health-related event she’s running in the Warfield area. She specialises in relaxation and meditation and is offering a free stress relief treatment; any donations you might wish to make to charity. She writes that she can help with physical aches, pains and conditions, stress, trouble sleeping, and relationship difficulties (so all that the festive season can bring!) and all adults are welcome alnog to Brownlow Hall in Newell Green. For more details call Cleo on 07960 862 108 or visit cleo@ukpranichealing.co.uk
Q) What do you call a child who doesn’t believe in Santa? (A) A rebel without a Claus! Talking of the younger generation… the Berkshire branch of the Campaign to Protect Rural England (CPRE) has been in touch regarding its biennial awards for Berkshire schools. The Dorothy Morley Conservation Awards is a great opportunity for schools to develop conservation projects with the chance of winning a first prize of £1,000 (or second prize of £500) for their school. Past examples of successful projects include tree planting, waste recycling, conservation projects and creating and developing school gardens. For more information and competition guidelines call Gloria on 0118 930 6756 or email cpreberkshire@btopenworld.com The deadline to register your interest is the end of January.
Q) What did the stamp say to the Christmas card? (A) Stick with me and we’ll go places! And talking of going places… it was lovely to hear from Bwalya who is the head of volunteering at Berkshire Vision. This wonderful charity supports hundreds of blind or partially sighted children and adults across the country, helping them to live life to the full. They arrange visits to West End shows, canal boat trips, tandem cycling and more to help boost self esteem and independence as sight loss can help those affected feeling very isolated. Bwalya says they have just launched a new appeal to buy a custom-built minibus for younger members. In aid of this appeal they need a broad range of volunteers. Q) Who hides in the bakery at Christmas? (A) A mince spy! (So bad it’s good... Yeah?!) And talking of a favourite festive treat… mince pies feature in the many events in December organised by Bracknell’s parks and countryside team. On Tuesday, 17th December, The Mince Pie Trail is a volunteer-led walk starting at 10.30am in the Frost Folly car park in Weller’s Lane, Warfield. It lasts for a couple of hours and I think you’ve guessed your reward at the end of it! S TAR Q&A
Television star, singer and father of five Rob Brydon, 54, talks about his life & career ahead of his new Songs & Stories tour
Q.
“
You’ve just had your photoshoot; looking good! “Yes, looking rather lovely in a suit and freshly pressed shirt; a glorious sight! As you know, I’m an elegant man. I encapsulate Daniel Craig… after he’s been savagely beaten.”
Q. You’ve won gongs at the British Comedy Awards and Royal Television Society… Why are you yearning to go back to live? “Live comedy is such a buzz. Sometimes you stand on stage thinking, ‘Good God! these people have all gone to the trouble of paying a babysitter.’ That’s a special feeling. You don’t choose that life – it’s almost a calling. The more you get used to it, the more it becomes your norm. I like to entertain people. It’s a privilege.” Q. Is Songs & Stories a risky business? “It’s a deliberate risk. I want to go outside my comfort zone. There are so many media outlets nowadays. Some people might only know me from Gavin and Stacey or Would I Lie To You? Those people often say to me, ‘I didn’t know you could sing’, and yet I‘ve sung a lot. I recently went to see Jeff Goldblum play with his band. It was liberating and wonderful.”
I want to go outside my comfort zone
Q. When did you discover you had such a beautiful singing voice? “I was 16 and starting to get interested in girls, but always pining from afar. In my teens I lived in Porthcawl, a coastal town in Wales, and all the cool boys were surfers. I wasn’t a surfer (I had a go once, but hurt my knee). I didn’t drink. My friends would all drink on a Friday and Saturday, and on a Tuesday and Wednesday, too, just for good measure. That meant they lost their fear of rejection. Unfortunately, I never lost that fear. But I knew I was funny and could make girls laugh. At the time, Joe Jackson’s song Is She Really Going Out with Him? was a big hit, and I sing a bit of that in the show, by way of illustration.”
Brydon
time
Q. So music was your ticket to cool? “My musical taste was never cool. I loved David Bowie and The Police, but also Shakin’ Stevens and Cliff Richard.” Q. What do you hope the audience take from this show? “I hope people will come out happier. As a performer in the last few years, you can feel people just want to escape. But of course, if the box office is still open, a percentage of the audience will be looking for a refund, I don’t doubt that.” The Songs & Stories tour visits Guildford’s G Live and Woking’s New Victoria Theatre in March. www.robbrydon.live 14 | DECEMBER 2019

Love & light
St John’s Church in Egham, TW20 9HL, will welcome you on Sunday, 8th December, to honour the memory of loved ones in partnership with Woking & Sam Beare hospices
L
ight Up A Life services are special celebration events held in your local community in partnership with Woking & Sam Beare hospices. “We are delighted that St John’s Church is hosting our Light Up a Life service again for 2019,” says Mary Morgan, spiritual care lead for Woking & Sam Beare Hospices. “These celebrations mean so much to us and our local community at what can be a very difficult time of year. “These special services are open to everyone, even if your loved one was not cared for by the hospice. It’s a chance to take some time out to remember those we have lost in a
gathering of others who are all going through similar personal journeys.” Refreshments will be provided after the service, which starts at 3.30pm. To help the team with catering and planning please register your attendance at www.wsbhospices. co.uk or call 01483 881771. From the end of November until the beginning of January there will be a memory tree in the Garden Café at Woking Hospice. All are welcome to visit to add a star to the tree in memory of a loved one. You can also remember a loved one by leaving a dedication on the hospice team’s new virtual Light Up A Life wall.

15th December, where you will help with conservation and possibly take home your own Christmas tree! Meet at Wildmoor Heath car park off Crowthorne Road at 10.30am and for more details visit www.bracknell-forest.gov.uk/ parks-and-countryside Q) What do angry mice send to each other at Christmas? (A) Cross Mouse Cards! (I should have provided a needle and thread to sew your sides back up!) And talking of festive greetings…once again Cordes Hall in the High Street, Sunninghill will open its Charity Christmas Card Shop. The cards are sold for the benefit of Cards for Good Causes, the charity which supports more than 250 national and local charities and is this year celebrating its 60th birthday. From Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm, the special shop set up in the hall will be selling cards along with festive gifts for all ages and traditional advent calendars. It will be open until Monday, 16th December.
Q) What kind of music do elves listen to? (A) Wrap! And talking of all things musical… a perfect-sounding festive entertainment takes place at St Mary’s Church in Church Road, Winkfield, on Saturday, 7th December. Music & Merriment is the name of the concert featuring a number of soloists, the Winkfield Handbell Ringers, a brass quintet, seasonal readings, mulled wine and mince pies. There will
also be the promotion of young talent and so the talented Sarah, aged ten, will take centre-stage with the violin. It starts at 7.30pm and tickets cost £13 (£6 for under-13s). All proceeds will go to St Mary’s church and for more details call 01344 882 918 or visit www.fosmw.com Q) Why are Christmas trees so fond of the past? (A) Because the present’s beneath them! (Oooh – that’s a clever one!) And talking of trees and all things Christmassy… that exceptional charity – and Heroes of the Month – Sebastian’s Action Trust, is holding its first ever Christmas Market at The Woodlands in Crowthorne. Supporting seriously ill children and their families this is a fun-sounding fundraiser featuring: a Santa’s grotto, face-painting, pony rides (weather dependent) and the switching on of their tree lights at 3.30pm. Entry is by donation and it takes place on Saturday, 7th December, between noon and 4pm. Sebastian’s is also looking for help sponsoring a child for its Christmas party (costing around £30 for a spectacular party – come on businesses! Get involved.) For more details and to find out more about this utterly inspiring charity visit www. sebastiansactiontrust.org
Q) How does Darth Vader enjoy his Christmas turkey? (A) On the dark side! There is absolutely no connection at all between that gag and this particular

rambling but I just wanted to get a Star Wars joke in there somewhere! And talking of art… Jean has been in touch about forthcoming evenings for the Virginia Water Art Society. On Wednesday, 8th January, Nada Davies will lead a demonstration on caricatures and on Saturday, 25th January, there’s a members’ painting day workshop. The society meets at the Community Centre in Beechmont Avenue, Trumps Green, Virginia Water, 7.15-9.30pm. For more details visit www.virginiawater.org.uk/artsociety Q) How does Christmas Day end? (A) With the letter "y"! Focusing on the start of celebrations, rather than the end… it’s hard to imagine a better beginning to festivities than the Christmas Concert courtesy of Bracknell Choral Society. These talented souls will perform the popular seasonal favourite Handel’s Messiah on Wednesday, 18th December, in the suitably uplifting surroundings of Wellington College Chapel in Duke’s Ride, Crowthorne. Tickets, £18 (accompanied under-18s free), include a programme and a mince pie with wine and soft drinks available. Pleased to note that this year the society will support the Thames Hospice Raise the Roof appeal and for more details visit www.bracknellchoral.org.uk
Q) What language does Santa speak? (A) North Polish! There's proper comedy from Danny Buckler at The
Old Court in Windsor on Friday, 13th December. Danny is a comedian, raconteur, improviser, storyteller and occasional magician but will focus on the funny as he hosts an assembly of his mates from stand-up such as Lou Sanders (winner of the last Taskmaster and appearing soon on Live at the Apollo) other artists will be announced nearer the time. 8pm, tickets just £12. For details and to book visit www.oldcourt.org Q) What do you call buying a piano for the holidays? (A) Christmas Chopin! (You must admit that one isn’t half bad?!) On the subject of shopping and music… my old college of Royal Holloway is one of the places to be for seasonal cheer this year. On Thursday, 5th December, it hosts a festive market with a wide variety of market stalls and live performances from students culminating in the annual tree-lighting ceremony at 5.30pm. Admission is free no booking required. On Saturday 7th December (from 6pm) and Thursday, 12th December (from 6.15pm), book in for A Festival of Lessons and Carols. My favourite is Christmas with the Choir of Royal Holloway on Friday, 13th December which features an evening of festive music and the chance of lots of audience participation! This starts at 7.30pm and prices vary. For more details visit www.royalholloway.ac.uk
And that – you will be very relieved to hear – is my whole Christmas Cracker Collection for 2019. Hope to see some of you back for the odd chuckle in 2020 as I think we’re gonna need it... Peace and love. JL

Win! A state-of-the-art Hawker Harrier II Avi-8 watch with super luminova face and solid steel casing
In the annals of aviation history, perhaps no fighter plane stirred as much controversy and technological wonder as the Hawker Harrier ‘JumpJet’, which flew for the Royal Air Force and US Air Force during the latter part of the 20th century. With the stunning ability to navigate improvised landing environment the aircrafts vertical/short take-off and landing propelled the Harrier into an almost iconic status in the new age of limited combat set against the spectre of the Cold War during the 1970s and ’80s. This incredible aircraft, powered by the framed Rolls Royce Pegasus engines then, provides the inspiration for the newest collection of timepieces from Avi-8. Enter as above and visit www.avi-8.co.uk

CRAF T
Here are eight steps to creating your own wreath, courtesy of Great Fosters Hotel where you can take part in a workshop on 2nd & 3rd December, 9.30am-2.30pm, with Rebecca from Lily’s Flowers
Front & R
centre
ebecca is looking forward to spreading some festive joy, supplying all the festive accessories. You’re invited to share your Christmas wreath pictures on social media using #AlexanderMoments Essential materials include battery-powered, waterproof fairy lights, a Norton wreath and craft wire. For decorations: snow in a can spray, pine cones, red ribbon, oranges, cinnamon, bunches of faux cranberries/red berries and mistletoe
1.
Pre-heat your oven to 120°C. Slice your orange into 1-2cm thick slices and pat dry. Pop your orange slices on to a metal cooling rack over a baking try, to ensure they don’t burn or stick. Once in the oven, leave them in there for about 3 hours, turning every 30 minutes or so.
2.
As with a tree, your decorating starts with lights. Wrap around the whole wreath and secure the battery pack out of sight with craft wire. Turn on to ensure they’re evenly placed.
3.
Spray your pine cones for a snow-kissed look. Allow to dry and then secure them to your wreath with your craft wire. To secure them, wrap the wire around the middle of the pine cone and tie on the back to hide the wire. Remember to leave space for your other decorations…
28 | DECEMBER 2019
4.
In the spaces between, arrange your baubles and use the craft wire to thread through the hook on the top of the bauble to secure to wreath.
5.
Bunch 2 or 3 cinnamon sticks and tie together with your ribbon. Create as many bunches as you like and secure by threading your craft wire through the back of the ribbon then tying to the wreath. Do the same with your bunches of berries and place around your wreath.
6.
All you need to add now are your orange slices, which can either be secured with any leftover red ribbon or craft wire.
7.
Time for the centrepiece. Add an eyecatching touch to the top centre of your wreath. You could use the festive symbol of love, a beautiful bunch of mistletoe or a big red bow.
8.
Use the rest of your ribbon to create a loop to display your wreath for visitors to enjoy.
What to be even more creative? You could try cotton wool for a snow-stopped effect, wooden letters that spell out Joy or Noel, candy canes or mini Christmas stockings. On Monday 2nd and Tuesday 3rd December, Rebecca from Lily’s Flowers will run a festive wreath workshop To find out more information or reserve your place, call 01784 433822 (option 4).
