your RamblER...

'm not sure how that’ll go down in certain situations. But there's lots to make you smile in your June Ramblings, including three key annual events to enjoy in Marlow this month.

Firstly, there’s the all-important Marlow Town Regatta & Festival which takes place during the weekend of 15th and 16th June. There are plenty of options for enjoyment, as well as the rowing. There’s a variety of food and drink on offer, some street food and an option for waitress service with Sojo Kitchen’s riverside dining, or for those who like the freedom of bringing their own food, there’s the opportunity to book a picnic pitch. Marlow Orchestra will also be performing during the afternoon of Sunday 16th June. Further details on all aspects of the Regatta & Festival and to purchase badges/picnic pitches/ parking, visit www.marlowtownregatta.org. The seventh Rock Bottom takes place on Saturday 22nd June at its usual venue of Marlow Bottom playing fields (SL7 3NF). There’s a fantastic mix of local bands and outstanding cover and tribute bands to be enjoyed. The fun rocks from 12.30–10.30pm. Further details and tickets visit www.marlowrockbottom.com.

Then there’s the Love Marlow Festival to enjoy, which takes place from Saturday 1st June to Sunday 16th June. The event is supported by Marlow Library who will be working alongside the Making Marlow Dementia Friendly group on Thursday 6th June, 10am – 11.30am to provide a support and information session for those caring for and people living with dementia. There are experienced, professional carers on hand who can offer support and advice and give more information on dementia and the support that is available in Marlow and the local area. There’s another workshop on offer on Thursday 13th June, 11am – 12.30pm and Friday 14th June, 2pm – 3.30pm. This workshop is entitled SCAM (Stop Cyber Attacks on Me!) Come along and find out how to keep yourself safe when responding to emails, letters or answering the phone. As well as the above, there are over 60 Love Marlow events to enjoy locally. Details of which were published in last month’s issue of this magazine. If you missed that, you can download the flyer, visit www.lovemarlow.co.uk/wpcontent/uploads/2019/04/LOVE-Marlow-programmelisting-flyer.pdf

Talking of Dementia (the umbrella term that Alzheimer’s disease can fall under), it’s the Alzheimer’s Society Cupcake Day on Thursday 13th June, so bring out your baking bowls and whip out your whisks to bake some cupcakes and raise some vitally needed funds. Cupcake Day is now in its fourth year and has raised £2.7 million since 2016 and by hosting you get to enjoy tasty treats with workmates, friends and family. It doesn’t have to be on the 13th June, any day to suit during the month is fine. Dementia is noted to be the 21st century’s biggest killer and will affect one million people by 2021. In the average time it takes to bake a batch of cakes, six people will develop dementia in the UK. For further details and a fundraising pack, visit www.cupcakeday.alzheimers.org.uk Staying with the food and drink theme, Princess and the Pinot are offering an introduction to their flights of Italian wine (that’s tasting to those of us unfamiliar with wine terminology), served with antipasti calabrese. There’s a glass of bubbles to enjoy whilst listening to a talk on the wines of Italy and then a flight of wines to pair up with the sharing platter, along with a favourite glass of wine. This takes place on Monday 10th June at Da Luca Restaurant, Marlow Bottom (SL7 3NT), start time 7.30pm. Tickets must HIGD-Parish-Mag-Half.pdf 25/04/2014 10:19:43 be bought in advance and places are limited. Further details and tickets, email soma@princessandthepinot.com.

Continuing with that all-important subject of food and drink and with a fundraising slant, Maidenhead Fundraising Group for the Thames Hospice is holding its annual Taplow Teas event at Taplow Court (SL6 0ER) on Sunday 23rd June, 2pm – 5pm. There are home-made cakes and cream teas on offer along with various stalls, including a plant stall and a tombola. There’s also the chance to look around the gothic mansion and explore the gardens. For further details search THMFG on Facebook. On the subject of cakes and tombola, St Nicholas Church in Bourne End, is holding its annual Hedsor Fair on Saturday 29th June. Held in the beautiful private gardens of Orchard Dene (SL8 5EB) beside the Thames, there are some lovely activities on offer here including boat rides, barbecue lunches, the ubiquitous teas and home-made cakes, all accompanied by a live band. There are also lots of wacky games for all the family to enjoy, along with children’s pony rides. The fun happens from 12-4.30pm. It’s the 1st Cookham Scout Group’s Village Fair and Dog Show on Saturday 15th June, 11am – 4pm. There’s lots of fun, family activities including entertainers, live music, barbecue and tractor rides. The fair is about bringing the community together and raising money for the Cookham Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorers.

truths

Liz Nicholls asks architect, dad and TV star George Clarke, 47 about a few of his favourite things ahead of Blenheim Flower Show this month

Q.

Hello! What’s your top tip for anyone improving their home? “Make it personal! I see so many homes that are attempts to copy an interior design magazine. I get bored of that.”

Q. Do you know this part of the world well? “Yes; I love Oxfordshire – it’s a fantastic escape from London. And Oxford itself is the most wonderful city. My favourite place to visit is the Augustus Pitt Rivers museum. What an incredible collector he was. Oh... and a small part of me wishes Blenhiem I’d gone to Oxford University. I Flower Show, 21stdidn’t apply because I didn’t think I’d get in.” 23rd June, www.

blenheimflowershow. co.uk

Q. What’s your favourite book, artist, film and music? “Master & Margarita by Mikhail Bulgakov. Turner’s my favourite artist. I’m a sucker for Bond; Spectre is up there. I never thought Daniel Craig would be my favourite but he’s brilliant. As for music, I’d have to choose Here Comes the Sun by George Harrison – it’s simplicity and beauty personified.”

Q. What are your three favourite buildings in the UK? “A tough question! My first would be Durham cathedral; I went there when I was eight and couldn’t believe something so beautiful and big could be built over 1,000 years ago. I’m not religious (my only religion is that everyone on the planet should be kind to each other) but I 16 | JUNE 2019

love beautiful, peaceful spaces. Second: Sir John Shane’s house in Lincoln’s-in-Fields... My third should be my home, as your own home is the most important piece of architecture... But I can’t not choose an Edwin Lutyens; I’d go for Goddards in Surrey. It’s owned by the Landmark Trust and I’m a proud patron.” Q. You love shopping... what’s your weakness? “Cameras. I’ve taken photos since I bought my first, a second-hand SLR Chinon from a shop in Sunderland (which is still there) aged 14. I now have a collection. My favourite is my Leica CL. I know there are great camera phones these days but a beautiful camera with amazing lens feels different.” Q. Who would be your dream party guests, living or dead, real or fictional? “George Best, Will Alsop (architect), David Attenborough, Elvis, Pink, Charlize Theron, James Bond (Daniel Craig) and my wife Katie... It would be a great night!” Q. What’s the best lesson parenthood has taught you? “Firstly, parenthood is the greatest thing on earth... nothing else matters once you have kids... Secondly: that love is unconditional.” Q. What would you wish for if you had a magic wand? “I’d reverse climate change so everything we did made a positive contribution to the environment. I worry every day about the impact we are having on Mother Nature. It’s going to require a massive change in the way the way we live on this planet for us to sort it out. That’s a depressing end to a nice interview. Sorry!”

For a few glorious seasons, animal print has spotted on fashion fans from head to toe... We love a bit of leopard print here at Round & About Towers (and not just the ladies!). unday, 16th June is Father’s Day so how about doing something really special to help not just your dad, but all men.

Throughout June, Prostate Cancer UK is inviting families and friends to get together and walk and help fund lifesaving research to stop prostate cancer, a disease which kills one man every 45 minutes. Since 2017, more than 10,000 people have joined a March for Men and helped raise in excess of £3.3million to improve testing, treatments and care for men. There are 10 national walks including those taking place in London and Bristol for you to get involved in or why not organise one yourself where you live? It doesn’t need to be any great distance, you can choose to walk around your local park or open space or get the community involved – decide on the length and pick a place that’s important to you. If there’s one incentive to get many men marching it’s the prospect of a pint at the end of the walk so how about a pub-to-pub march? Plan a route between two pubs and finish with a well-deserved pint. Many will know of Sky Sports presenter Jeff Stelling’s efforts to raise funds for prostate cancer, he has walked 25 marathons which have raised nearly £800,000 and from September 5th to 8th he’s taking on four marathons in four days walking from club to club in Glasgow, Belfast, Cardiff and London. You can join Jeff or set up one of your own club-to-club walks, it doesn’t need to just be football league clubs and it doesn’t need to be 26 miles either. ● For loads of fundraising ideas or to join Jeff go to www. prostatecanceruk.org/get-involved/march-for-men

he response to our computer repair & support advertising in Marlow has been overwhelming. Below are just some of our clients’ thoughts:

“My wife and I had been having problems with our respective home laptops for some time. They were slow and unreliable. In desperation I foolishly accepted help from a caller purporting to be a Microsoft technician who claimed they had identified problems with our computers. I paid them a significant sum of money to fix the problems. There was a marginal improvement, but I realised afterwards that I had been the victim of a scam. I saw some adverts in a local magazine for help with computers. I phoned several of them, and liked the sound of PChelp4U, so asked them to help us. It was one of the best decisions I have made, as they worked their magic for us! They came and checked out my relatively new laptop, made sure it didn’t have anything nasty on it, and installed a new security system on it for me. They took away my wife’s laptop and rebuilt it for her. We have been delighted with the results, which have renewed our confidence as silver surfers in using the computers. We have called several times since then for advice on various issues. In all our dealings with the team we have found them prompt, polite, courteous and very efficient, and have no hesitation in giving them the strongest endorsement possible.” Mike Basnett, Marlow “I was very impressed with PChelp4U. I was struggling with my ‘slow’ laptop, saw the advertisement In Round and About. Charlie arrived on time, and explained to me how they could help. Within two or three days I had a new Dell latop. I was given training on the new computer all very efficient. As PChelp4U advertisement states, [“Personal professional service with a smile”] plus their reasonable rates is correct. I would certainly recommend Ben and his team.” Moira Turner, Marlow Bottom Read more at: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/testimonials Landline: 01628 517038 Visit: www.pc-help-4u.co.uk/marlow-it-support Email: support@pc-help-4u.co.uk

Floating feeling

We’re looking forward to another star-studded Henley Festival from Wednesday 10th to Sunday 14th July

O

nce again, this year, there will be a remarkable transformation in Henley as in mid-July the Remenham bank changes from the Regatta site to that of a formal black-tie festival.

In the evening spectacular firework displays will illuminate the night skies. We are also promised Europe’s largest pop-up restaurant where a team led by Michelin starred chef Angela Hartnett will serve 1200 covers each evening.

On the iconic floating stage this year we have a wide range of stars who reflect the eclectic mix of the event, with Boy George, Jessie J, Tom Odell, Jo Whiley’s 90s Anthems, Björn Again and Classic FM: A Night at the Movies with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Comedians and impressionists in the line up for 2019 include the irrepressible Julian Cleary, Ed Byrne, Jan Ravens, Steve Bugeja, Andy Hamilton and former alumni of Oxford University, Richard Herring, Steve for one is really looking forward to appearing at the Festival after having had many pleasant evenings performing at the Kenton Theatre and has always found the Henley audiences to be fun, switched on and always up for a laugh.

Next month, we’ll bring you an interview with the director and founder of Björn Again covering their remarkable story that has seen them go from humble beginnings of performing in a pub in Melbourne to opening for Nirvana at that other Thameside venue – the Reading Festival. This Abba tribute band has performed in more than 150 countries around the world, and in case you were wondering they have performed in front of members of the real Abba and are now good friends with them. As for which person they would love to join their line-up, we’ll tell you more next month! In addition to the floating stage, plenty of entertainment across the site each day and evening including a star-studded comedy line-up, world famous jazz musicians, world music stars, up and coming and unsigned folk singers, mind boggling street theatre, world class sculpture and paintings. 26 | JUNE 2019

Julian has not been seen live on stage for a while, but that is not due to a desire to solitude but the fact he has spent some time writing children’s books. However, the wheel of fortune has turned and now Julian feels in need a more adult audience for a while. Now with the technology off radio-mikes it is not just the first five rows who may meet a wandering Julian during his show, and he is also on the lookout for ladies in floral print dresses. For further information on who is appearing where and when, how to get tickets and perhaps more importantly where you can park your car, please visit www.henley-festival.co.uk.

NUTRITION

You’re in control...

OSTEOPATHY

Putting up with discomfort?

You don’t have to!

The elephant in the room.

I

have mentioned Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO) in a previous column. SIBO occurs when the small intestine (the part of the digestive system designed to absorb nutrients from food) is overgrown with bacteria that should not be there. The small intestine is effectively sterile. The colon should harbour large populations of bacteria. When bacteria that should be in the colon decide to take up home in the small intestine, significant health issues may ensue, including nausea, bloating, vomiting, diarrhoea, malnutrition, weight loss, joint pain, fatigue, acne, eczema, asthma, depression and rosacea. SIBO is typically not considered in the standard assessment of an individual’s well being, but clinically it is highly prevalent. The latest data/studies suggest IBS and SIBO often co-exist, with a 10-fold increase in SIBO if you are presenting with IBS. If SIBO is present it needs to be addressed or there is little chance of regaining long-term health and well-being without attending to the inbalances. SIBO is highly correlated with nutritional deficiencies (even if supplementing), due to the bacteria in the small intestine interfering with absorption of nutrients. The malabsorption of nutrients is likely to eventually impact every major system in the body, if left unchecked. Key triggers and drivers of SIBO include low stomach acid, poor bile flow/liver health, abdominal surgery, radiotherapy, lack of pancreatic enzymes, diabetes, diverticulosis, coeliac disease, stress, ileocaecal valve dysfunction, food poisoning, regular alcohol and a dysfunctional Migrating Motor Complex, this makes cleansing/sweeping like motions between meals cleaning the small intestine, moving the contents of the small intestine and bacteria towards the colon. If this does not function, undigested food can help bacteria to thrive. SIBO is typically treated with antibiotics, but reoccurrence rates are high and beneficial bacteria essential for digestive function are likely to also be harmed. ● Call Mark BSc (Hons) BA (Hons) mBANT CNHC on 0118 321 9533 or visit www. entirewellbeing.com

Ä Gaeng keow wan gai

Method:

P

ound all the paste ingredients in a pestle and mortar (hardest first, as listed, working down to the softest), until you have a uniform, close-textured paste. If it’s not completely smooth, don’t worry. If you prefer to use a food processor or a blender, again work from hardest to softest, and add about 1 tablespoon water or more to bring the paste together. Heat the oil in a wok or saucepan and fry the paste until it smells fragrant (about a minute). Add half the coconut milk, bring to the boil slowly, stirring to dissolve the paste. Let the coconut milk simmer a little until you see oil appear on the surface. Then add 200 ml/7 fl oz/a cup of water and bring to the boil. Add the chicken and bring back to the boil, then add the rest of the coconut milk. Bring back to the boil and simmer for about six minutes. Add the nam pla and the sugar, if using. Taste and adjust the seasoning. If it seems a little thick, add a little more water – you want a soupiness, not a thick gravy. Add the aubergines, the bamboo shoots and one of the long red chillies. Simmer for another three minutes or so. Taste – you want this to taste vibrant, hot, salty and herbaceous. eat the wok or frying pan (skillet) until it’s very hot. Add the oil, then the garlic and stir-fry until golden. Add the prawns and the chillies, and carry on stirring, adding the nam pla, soy sauce and sugar, until the prawns are cooked. through well, breaking up any clumps. Add the onion and the spring onion and incorporate well.

slivered beef, pork, chicken, tofu, whatever. Feel free to pull back the chilli, too, if you like. You can always add extra heat later with some nam pla prik (fish sauce with chillies).

Season with white pepper, then turn on to plates and serve sprinkled with coriander and with the cucumber slices and lime wedges on the side.

Three words of cooking caution: firstly, when you add the rice, you may be tempted to add more oil... Don’t do it! It will make the dish claggy. Keep breaking up the rice as you stir it through the wok, and work through it. Secondly, if you want to make this for more than two, by all means do. But don’t double up all the ingredients and throw it all into one wok. Make the dish once, wipe out your wok, and go again with the second batch. Thirdly, make sure the cooked rice is at room temperature when you make this. If it’s too warm and steamy, it will clump and stick. If it’s too cold, it will turn out as hard as a rock.

Fried rice is one of the great comfort dishes – it’s filling, soothing and satisfying. I’ve used prawns in this version, but you can use
