ut whether your Valentine is a husband, girlfriend, Tinder date, downstairs neighbour or your oldest pal this year, the important thing is just taking the time to show you care.

English traditional folk band Faustus will perform at The Half Moon in Putney on Sunday, 3rd February. Dubbed “one of Britain’s outstanding folk bands” by The Guardian and nominated in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the trio are deeply rooted in the English folk music tradition. Grab a flagon of mead and while away your Sunday evening listening to their sweet melodies. Entry £12 on the door for the show, 8-11pm, at venue at 93 Lower Richmond Road, SW15 1EU. Here’s some heartening news for fans of the Great British boozer. The Office for National Statistics have announced that pubs in Wandsworth are faring far better than those neighbouring areas. This success may be due to a pub protection scheme launched in the borough: In 2016 Wandsworth was the first local authority in the UK to bring in measures to protect its most important pubs from redevelopment. The council put restrictions in place which

www.roundandabout.co.uk

psavage@roundandabout.co.uk

meant pubs could no longer be converted into other venues, such as mini-supermarkets, without the need for planning permission. The Bricklayers Arms and Arab Boy in Putney have both been fortunately protected by the campaign, alongside 120 other locals. Wandsworth has lost 15 pubs since 2001 – a fall of ten per cent. However, this compares favourably with neighbouring boroughs such as Lambeth which has seen a fall of 24% (45 pubs lost) and Merton where the drop is 40% (30 pubs). To fill your wintery veins with endorphins and get some much-needed vitamin D, Swift Fitness is our new favourite outdoor exercise class. A fun, high-energy boot camp taking place in Eel Brook Common (among other places), the hour-long classes are a perfect mix of exercises, including different variations of running and circuits to get your heart pumping and fill your lungs with fresh air. The instructors are friendly and welcoming to beginners and fitness fiends alike, and they’re currently offering a 30-day free trial. Fulham Palace near Putney Bridge is set to relaunch this spring following a successful campaign to raise £1.7m. This bridged the gap for their major £3.8m restoration project Discovering the Bishop of London’s Palace at Fulham, which will allow the trust to restore the Tudor Quadrangle and make the whole site more accessible. The funding has come from many individual and corporate donors, trusts and foundations, and through the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Tudor Quadrangle (the oldest part of the palace), will shortly see new all-weather paths and the reintroduction of historic trees and shrubs. The project aims to deepen visitor engagement with the site’s rich heritage through an expanded volunteer and community programme, increased learning opportunities and events. Admission is free to the palace and gardens all year round. For more information and opening hours, visit www.fulhampalace.org. Fulham Palace is located just off Fulham Palace Road (A219), and can be reached easily by tube to Putney Bridge Underground Station. Visit Fulham Palace, Bishop’s Avenue, SW6 6EA. Wandsworth Council is cracking down on rogue builders who disturb the peace in Putney and the surrounding neighbourhood. Not to be confused with London Fashion Week in September, “London Fashion Weekend” is nevertheless a must-visit for the capital’s fashionistas. This biannual festival follows the main autumnal event, and is more accessible, letting everyone in on the runway action and fashion scene. Ticket-holders can scan the catwalk shows for the latest SS19 trends, attend talks on fashion, beauty, and how to make it into the industry with expert panels, or treat themselves to a pampering session. There’s also a chance to shop for clothes by more than 150 designers at exclusive show prices, straight off the catwalk. Held on The Strand, it’s a great way to engage with British brands and international designers. The festival takes place on Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th February. London Fashion Weekend is held at The Store X, 180 Strand, WC2R 1EA. www.londonfashionweekfestival.com

he wonders and mysteries of our oceans will once again be centre stage when Blue Planet II – Live in Concert comes to London’s O2 Arena offering a visual, audio and spectacular concert experience. Due to popular demand, an additional matinee show has been added to the diary and Blue Planet II – Live in Concert will share showstopping moments from the BAFTA award-winning BBC One series. The natural wonders of our blue planet will be highlighted in breath-taking detail, projected on to a giant 4k Ultra HD LED screen all to the accompaniment of the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert, which will be hosted by BBC 8 | R&A Putney

presenter Anita Rani, will feature such memorable moments from the TV series as the crab and eel rock pool chase and the sea lion tuna hunt. And Anita admits she can’t wait to part of it, she says: “The penny hasn’t quite dropped that I’m hosting it because I will be standing there in front of 12,000 people at The O2 and all the various arenas that we’re going to and holding the show together. It’s such an honour to be asked to do this show.” To be precise, Blue Planet II was more than a show on TV she adds, calling it a moment of television history. “If you watched it, and loved it, then you cannot afford to miss this live tour because it’s a fully immersive experience. “You’ll be able to see those iconic moments – surfing dolphins on a huge screen with an February 2019

80-piece live orchestra playing that incredible soundtrack by Hans Zimmer,” she enthuses. But Blue Planet II goes further than even that, showing the power of TV and the way in which it changed people’s attitudes towards singleuse plastic. Anita adds: “It made us aware of the damage we are doing to our beautiful planet and our oceans.” During the filming of Blue Planet II, crews embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries and spent more than 6,000 hours of deep sea diving armed with the latest state-ofthe-art equipment. She is full of praise for the four years it took to film the show saying it “opened our eyes to an alien world”, adding: “It was the talking point for everybody at work the next day. It tells you something about humanity, it tells you something about our planet. It’s something that is embedded, it’s not like watching an entertainment show that is fun and entertaining, watching Blue Planet II hasn’t left me. Those scenes are with us forever.” Join the voyage of discovery and enjoy an experience like no other with Blue Planet II – Live in Concert on Sunday, 17th March, at 3pm. ● Tickets are available from www.AXS.com, www.eventim.co.uk, www.seetickets.com and www.blueplanet2live.co.uk

star Q&A

ART &

soul

Liz Nicholls chats to actor, dad, and all-round charming man Nigel Havers, 67, who is set to star in ART at Richmond Theatre.

Q.

February is here which brings Valentine’s Day! Do you celebrate? “In a word: no! My wife is not interested in Valentine’s Day, thank God. We don’t bother at all. If that sounds unromantic, perhaps it would be to say that I think every day should be Valentine’s Day!” Q. What do you enjoy most about ART? “ART is my favourite play which is why I’ve done it so many times. It’s beautifully written by Yasmina [Reza] and one of the best comedies ever... Thirdly, it’s a joy to take part in because, being such a short play, you’re in the pub before 9pm!” Q. On this touring production of ART you’re visiting lots of theatres; any highlights? “I love it, especially Richmond as it’s so local.” Q. You always have a lot on; how do you relax when you’re not working? Do you watch soaps? “I don’t watch any soaps, no. It being panto season, I haven’t not worked for quite a while – I’ve forgotten how I relax! I tend to keep busy, but if I’m not lying down, I’m walking.” Q. Does your dog accompany you much? “Yes; she’s a black poodle who’s cut like a mongrel so people are always surprised when I tell them her breed. She’s called Charlie and a real character. I live between Wiltshire and London and we often take her to the pub with us. The Bell at Ramsbury is a lovely dog-friendly pub near us. In London there are several; we like Colbert in Sloane Square and a restaurant called Lucio’s in Fulham Road. I don’t know why more places don’t allow well-behaved dogs.” Q. What’s the greatest lesson fatherhood has taught you? “Agree with your daughter! Give them anything they want! Because they’ll win in the end so that little nugget will at least save you time.” Q.Is there anywhere in the world you’d like to visit? “I haven’t been to Vietnam and I’d like to explore that part of the world.” Q. You’re godfather to Jack Whitehall, too. Do you see a hidden side to him? “He’s a very bad influence on me! No; he’s a sweetheart; a really lovely man. There’s nothing secret about him because he lays it all bare in his acts. He’s very honest about his life. When he first started as a comedian, he performed at a pub in Putney and invited me to come along to watch and advise. My advice to him at the end of it was: look – don’t try to be a comedian! Well, that didn’t work and I’m glad he didn’t take it!” ● Nigel Havers, Denis Lawson and Stephen Tompkinson star in ART at Richmond Theatre, 4th to 9th March. For tickets, visit www.atgtickets.com/venues/richmondtheatre or call 0844 871 7651 (normal charge plus 7p per minute).

not belonging, loners but longing for company and love. I’m delighted Salt wanted to publish me and I think they’ve made a beautiful book: John Oakey’s cover design is striking and appropriate for my style of writing.

“I wrote individual stories without thinking of ever having them published as a collection,” says Vesna, “but it was interesting that when we did that, we realised most of the characters, if not all, had some passion, often spilling into obsession. Also, they were usually lonely individuals, without roots,

“When it comes to my own taste in literature, I think I am guided by what Edouard Manet said of painting: it has to be of our own time. For me, texts which are written as if modernism never happened, as if there has been no Joyce, Virigina Woolf, etc, have no interest. That’s why

I don’t like most of contemporary British writing. Fortunately, different voices have recently been allowed into the mainstream. I am thinking of Eimear McBride, Mike McCormac and Sara Baume. But my favourite writer in the UK is by far Gabriel Josipovici. Each of his books is a gem in a different way.”

The greatest

M

otor racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart is embarking on the greatest and most personal challenge of his life. His wife of 56 years, Lady Helen Stewart was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia four years ago, driving him to establish the Race Against Dementia (RAD). The three-time Formula One world champion has launched a £2million search for new scientists to develop breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of dementia. RAD aims to find a solution that will allow millions of people to live longer with dementia. There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia and millions more carers and family members who struggle to cope as their loved one suffers. Unless a cure is found, one in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime. However, behind each statistic such as these are the real people dealing with the disease and its effects on a daily basis, each with their own unique heart-

The £2m of research funding to find a solution to this will be administered in partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK and will support innovative new ideas in dementia research through research fellowships. Sir Jackie says: “The Race Against Dementia is the greatest challenge of my life, but with the right people and the right approach we can encourage and accelerate a new way of thinking and cross the finish line with success.” The chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, Hilary Evans said they were very grateful for the support of Sir Jackie and his sons, Paul and Mark. She says: “It has been inspirational to see Sir Jackie and the family step up to this challenge and to pour drive and determination into taking on the greatest medical challenge.

Admitting that his family’s world has been turned upside down, he also acknowledges that they are very fortunate to be able to afford 24-hour specialist care. He says: “I know this is not possible for millions of other families touched by dementia. The cost of care can be enormous and, from a medical point of view, there are very few treatments that can make life easier. This has to change.” The couple’s sons are ambassadors for Race Against Dementia. Paul has written a song to his mother, entitled Praise You, as a gift to thank her for everything she has done for the family over the years. He says: “I wrote the words as a way to trigger special moments that we have shared together. Dementia has impacted not just my mother but all of us and in particular my father.” Mark says his mother has always been a strong and loving parent, dedicating herself to the family. Singing for

the Brain

Music is key to unlock memories when it comes to dementia care.

S

inging is about so much more than hitting the right notes and making a good sound – it can improve brain activity, wellbeing and mood. For the Alzheimer’s Society it means much more even than that – singing can unlock memories and kickstart the brain, an increasingly key feature of dementia care which is why the society’s Singing for the Brain sessions are so beneficial.

and identities. It’s so important to still include people with dementia in social activities – no one should have to face it alone, “ says Dr James Pickett, head of research at Alzheimer’s Society. He added: “This study suggests that this transformation could be in part due to parts of the brain connecting better for a brief time after hearing music. “Further research is needed to help understand the longer-term effects of music and help show that it’s not only drugs that can help people manage with dementia.”

Singing can reach parts of the brain in ways other forms of communication cannot

Run in dozens of different locations across the country, it aims to boost confidence, self esteem and quality of life by involving people with dementia and their carers in singing sessions.

Professor Paul Robertson, an academic and concert violinist who has made a study of music in dementia care said music tends to stay with us to the end and that the auditory system is the first to fully function at just 16 weeks. He says: “This means you are musically receptive long before anything else. It’s a case of first in, last out when it comes to a dementia-type breakdown of memory.” ● For exact details about locations and dates go to www.alzheimers.org.uk/ find-support-near-you#!/search

Singing for the Brain groups allow people with dementia to express themselves and interact creatively with others. The idea sprang from Singing for the Brain founder Chreanne Montgomery-Smith who when working in a nursing home noticed how residents responded positively to music. Beginning with a quiz which used familiar tunes, Chreanne noticed how gradually everyone joined in, including one woman who couldn’t remember her name but knew every song. She explains: “It made me realise that people with dementia had a special ability to remember songs. Even if people with dementia can’t talk, they may be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet. It helps them – and their carers – to feel life is worthwhile.” The positive effect of Singing for the Brain groups has been proved by talking to those involved. “Dementia is a devastating condition, slowly stripping people of their memories, relationships www.roundandabout.co.uk

& BEYOND BOWIE

Liz Nicholls chats to Woody Woodmansey ahead of the Holy Holy show this month...

T

hree years on from Bowie’s death, his bandmate Woody Woodmansey still finds the concept of him being “gone” utterly surreal.

“He’s probably in my thoughts most of the time,” says Woody, “but it’s the same for everyone – he doesn’t go away. The music we created has lasted the test of time. We never ever thought the music we made 40 years ago would still be on the radio.” Together with producer Tony Visconti, drummer and “Spider Man from Mars” Woody are getting set to take their Holy Holy tour around the UK with an all star band including glorious Bowie-esque vocals from Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory. The group will perform Bowie’s material from 1969-73.

history. “The music industry had become so boring and we wanted to give it a kick up the ****, which I guess we did!” laughs Woody.

I ask Woody whether his love of music started at school. “No! I didn’t become aware if music until after school,” he laughs his throaty, smoky cackle. “I just played Hendrix, Led Zep and Cream records, putting my finger on the vinyl to slow it down a bit and hear what the drums were doing so I could copy it. I only learned the rudiments later.”

I ask Woody about meeting David for the first time, when he arrived at his flat in a big gothic building in Beckenham... “I had all these questions in my head,” says Woody. “Like: was he clever or thick? Could he write? Mick [Ronson] had raved on and on about him. I was expecting this curlyhaired folkie from Space Oddity but he opened the door in a rainbow T-shirt, silver belt and red corduroy trousers and shoes he’d painted blue stars on. We chatted about music and I could tell he was intelligent. Then he picked his 12 string up and amazed me with his presence – he never flinched for a moment.”

This time three years ago, Woody and the band were playing the High Line in New York, not far from where David lived. “It was his birthday and Tony decided to call him. We played a bad karaoke version of Happy Birthday. The audience joined in and he loved that. He asked them what they thought of Black Star, which had come out that day and they went wild! We said we’d catch up soon but of course never did because two days later his son messaged the news. David had always seemed invincible. On the Ziggy tours he was barely eating and was often really ill but he always got on stage and smashed it. After the news we weren’t sure whether to carry on but David would have so we did, in celebration of him. And here we are now, still celebrating him. Our rider might be a bit less rock and roll but the spirit is just the same.”

Woody duly turned down the tempting offer of a managerial job at a glasses factory in his native Yorkshire to join Bowie down in London and make

United charity in Hammersmith & Fulham has begun a philanthropy drive for new local campaign Warmer Together, following the release of some shocking statistics: of the 19,000 residents aged over 65 in Hammersmith and Fulham, over half have a long-term health problem or disability, 25% live in poverty and 43% live alone. Money raised over the winter and early spring months will go towards to community activities making the cold season more cheerful for in-need older people in the borough. Fulham Lunch Club, run by local organisation Fulham Good Neighbours, is the first recipient of a Warmer Together grant; this year’s Christmas themed lunch was one of its many projects helping alleviate social isolation and loneliness among older people in the borough. In addition to raising philanthropic funding, the campaign will focus on growing and increasing the involvement of older people’s organisations. To donate today or read more about Warmer Together, visit www.unitedhf.org/warmertogether Following huge success, critically acclaimed drama The Wider Earth has extended its run and will now play until Sunday, 24th February. Charting the adventures of the young Charles Darwin, the play is currently on at the custom-built theatre in the Jerwood Gallery in

Kensington’s Natural History Museum. Featuring a cast of seven, and 30 extraordinary hand-crafted puppets representing the exotic wildlife Darwin encountered, The Wider Earth is an ingenious coming-of-age story. The play celebrates the incredible complexity of our planet and Darwin’s adventurous spirit as he faced perilous environments and unknown dangers on his bold voyage. Written and directed by Dead Puppet Society’s creative director David Morton, the idea for The Wider Earth was conceived at a residency in Cape Town in 2013 with the Handspring Puppet Company – the creative team behind War Horse. The Wider Earth has a limited “kids go free” offer to allow the next generation to learn more about this iconic character and one of the most important voyages in scientific history. Tickets are available from £19.50. To book, visit www.thewiderearth.com. Visit The Jerwood Gallery at the Natural History Museum, Cromwell Road, Kensington, SW7 5BD. B

ased on the 1980 phenomenal pop culture film, Fame The Musical is the international smash-hit sensation following the lives of students at New York’s High School of Performing Arts as they navigate their way through the highs and lows, the romances and the heartbreaks and the ultimate elation of life. This bittersweet but uplifting triumph of a show explores the issues that confront people even today. Jorgie Porter, perhaps best known for playing Theresa McQueen in Hollyoaks, is taking on her first role in a stage musical and is delighted about it. “I am so excited to be making my stage debut playing Iris Kelly in Fame. The musical is one of my favourite ever films and I can’t wait to open the show in Manchester, my home town. I’ve not had a chance to perform ballet for a long time, it’s what I originally trained in – so I’m looking forward to getting my ballet shoes on.” Jorgie started ballet lessons aged three, and it was only when she landed the role of Theresa she gave them up. So, who or indeed what has inspired her? “I went to see Phantom of the Opera as a child and that www.roundandabout.co.uk

really made an impression on me. More recently, I am a big fan of Beyoncé and Darcey Bussell; I just love the discipline she has.” So, would Georgie like to follow other celebrities onto Strictly Come Dancing, and be judged by Darcey and the others? “Wow, the leg extensions Debbie McGee did – I would jump at the chance to do Strictly!” This is her first role on stage in a musical, but can she draw on her time appearing in the soap as good experience? It seems yes. “Definitely, my work on the soap has enabled me to be in control of my emotions and be able to switch them at a moment’s notice. Plus, both of the characters have secrets that they are keen will stay hidden.” As she starts this new venture, what is the best advice she’s been given? “Probably two central pieces of advice: always be true to yourself and make sure you have a circle of friends around you who will tell you the truth.” ● Watch as star-struck pupils strive to become superstars. Fame the Musical comes to the New Wimbledon Theatre between 18th & 23rd February. For further information please go to www.atgtickets.com/shows/fame/newwimbledon-theatre Putney R&A | 27

Marking the turn of the lunar calendar, Chinese New Year falls on Tuesday, 5th February, and celebrates the Year of the Pig. On Sunday, 10th February, spectators can watch the colourful Chinese New Year parade pass through the streets of the West End and Chinatown. The parade will set off from Charing Cross Road at 10am with a dragon and lion dance, before snaking on down to Chinatown and finishing in Trafalgar Square, with more entertainment kicking off at noon. China Exchange, based in Leicester Square, are hosting a few community-led walking tours, where you can discover Chinatown’s rich history, learn Chinese New Year traditions and support the special community. Find out what was on that spot before Henry VIII’s Reformation in the 1530s, what the gingko trees and red lampposts mean, why the Chinese

community move from Limehouse to Soho, and much more besides. The 2.5 hour tours include lunch (in Chinatown, of course) and cost £27. The tours begin from 32A Gerrard Street and last from 11.30am – 2pm. Current dates available are 2nd, 5th and 19th February. For more information and to book, email info@chinaexchange.uk or visit www.chinaexchange.uk It’s not too late to get your skates on one last time for a final spot of ice skating: Canary Wharf’s 200sqm rink is open until 16th Feb. Set to the backdrop of Canary Wharf’s twinkling towers and enchanting greenery, the ice rink is a strangely magical haven in the rather soulless part of the city. What’s more, there’s a rink-side Grandstand Bar serving up mulled wine and all the usual offerings for observers and plenty of shopping to be had nearby. The ice rink opens from 10am – 10pm, giving time for a post work skate for city workers. Throughout the season, adult tickets cost £16.95 for any slot, while children cost £10.95 between the ages of four and 12 years. To book, visit www. icerinkcanarywharf.co.uk, or head to Canada Square Park, Canary Wharf, E14 5AB. The closest tube station is Canary Wharf, which is a two-minute walk away.

Enjoy your February, whatever the postman brings!
