Oh what a night..!
As the ten of us representing the Round & About team sat at the table in the Grand Ballroom of the Park Lane Hilton, it’s fair to say that we already felt like winners…
A
t this black-tie industry awards giant, we’re rubbing shoulders with the “big guns” of media, alongside Google and Channel 4. Being part of a small team, we at Round & About have always punched above our weight, results and success, but dare we dream that we could actually win..? Event host Colin Murray announces the results and we’re all reflected in golden glory. Round & About has scooped gold for Regional Commercial Team of the Year and Regional Media Brand of the Year as well as bronze for Regional Editorial Content Team of the Year… The rest of the evening is a joyful whirl of congratulations, clinking of glasses,
cigars and dancing well into the early hours. “Standing with the R&A team, amongst some of the biggest names in the UK media, having just won two gold and a bronze award was a perfect 25th anniversary celebration,” says Peter Savage, our founding editor.
Indeed, this family business has grown from humble beginnings to a heavyweight industry contender, thanks to our team’s dedication to serving our customers and readers every month. In April Round & About was 25 years old – and in that quarter century the team have seen huge changes in the media industry. All the hard work that it’s taken to build upon our successes and find a way to serve our communities and customers gave us a precious milestone to celebrate earlier this year… And these wins have given us golden memories to treasure going forward into the next phase. hose who danced the nights away to rock and roll are now approaching retirement. We pondered how this summer, and today’s young generation, might be remembered.
One thing's for sure: July is the month to be outdoors, whenever and wherever possible. From Wimbledon and the ICC Cricket World Cup come rain or shine, to British Summertime Festival to spontaneous picnics in Eel Brook Common, the moral of the story is to soak up the summer at all opportunities. If you are feeling nostalgic for simpler times and some banging 1960s tunes, you’re in luck! On Saturday 20th July, Putney’s community choir The Dover House Singers will perform a very special performance of Songs Inspired by the Summer of '69. The show will kick off at 7pm, and guests can expect renditions of favourite hits such as Son of a Preacher Man, Sweet Caroline, Summer Breeze and Lean on Me. Visit St Mary’s Church, Putney High Street, SW15 1SN. Entry is free, and all proceeds from refreshments and a raffle on the night will go to the great local charity Regeneration-Rise; www.regenerate-rise.co.uk
The Swedish fitness craze "plogging" is coming to Putney parks. Plogging gives you a double endorphin hit; keeping fit while making a difference to your local community. Essentially, it’s a combination of running, jogging or walking and the Swedish term “plocka upp,” meaning pick up. The vision is all about tackling plastic pollution, which is now at crisis point, with 8 million tonnes of it hitting our oceans annually. To find out more and take part on the next plog, visit www.wandsworth.gov.uk On 2nd July, get a fix of high culture without spending a penny, by heading to Trafalgar Square for an outdoor live screening of Carmen by none other than The Royal Opera. Crowds gather with picnic rugs, blankets and brollies for a very British affair that is BP Big Screens, and a picnic makes the experience even better. If Mozart is more your cup of tea, The Marriage of Figaro will be screened on 9th July. As with all free events, early arrival is recommended. Pre-screening 6.30pm, shows start at 7pm, but seats will be filled long before that. For more details, visit www.roh.org.uk/about/bp-big-screens

For those inevitable rainy days, the National History Museum has you covered. A beautiful initiative is Dawnosaurs; a free event for children on the autism spectrum to enjoy the museum with their families and siblings, free from the hustle and bustle of the public. Visitors will have a chance to see, meet and touch live animals, and all activities are supported by experienced, autism-aware facilitators. A dedicated Sensory Room will also be available for those children needing a quieter and calmer space. This event is best for children aged five to 15, and siblings are welcome. This will be held in the Hintze Hall, and from 30th June until 7th September. Putney Women’s Institute will hold a Book, Bake and Make sale on Saturday, 27th July, at the Prince of Wales Pub, 38 Upper Richmond Road, SW15 2SP (near East Putney Tube Station). From 10am-12pm, enjoy homemade cakes, and you can buy plants and craft items.
The Great Exhibition Road Festival takes 28th 30th June, and will see South Kensington transformed with an array of interactive workshops, behind-the-scenes tours, exciting talks and performances to inspire all ages. A collaboration between Imperial College London, the Natural History Museum, the V&A, the Royal Albert Hall, the Science Museum and the Royal Commission for the Exhibition of 1851 among others, the festival marks the
bicentenary of the births of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert and takes inspiration from their vision for the Great Exhibition of 1851, which showcased the latest innovations. If you regret not shelling out for Chelsea Flower Show in May, you’ve got another chance for horticultural delights with RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show, the largest annual flower show in the world. It attracts 140,000 visitors every year, and this year runs 2nd - 7th July. Following the success of her treehouse in Chelsea, HRH The Duchess of Cambridge will co-design a garden with awardwinning Davies White Landscape Architects. There will also be interactive activities, including calligraphy, flower crown making, cake decorating and glitter face painting. Chef Raymond Blanc heads up the community allotment section, showcase gardening for sustainability, taste, affordability and beauty, and a mix of flower and vegetable planting. To find out more, visit www.rhs.org.uk London Zoo is a great and obvious way to occupy the family, but if you fancy more of an adult evening out Zoo Nights take place on Friday evenings from 7th - 26th July. There’s a new crazy golf course as well as street food, live acoustic music, animal lanterns and new walking tour jam-packed with weird and wonderful animal facts. We’re spoilt for choice when it comes to ways to enjoy being in, on and beside the water thanks to the Thames and other waterways, lidos and pools. Liz Nicholls finds ways to dip in & out this summer
H
ere in our special patch of London, “the pale green Thames lies like a rod of rippled jade” (that’s Oscar Wilde).
The river dominates our landscape and provides a vista as well as a thoroughfare and a home for wildlife – did you know the Thames is home to more than 119 species of fish, as well as otters, voles, and eels? The river was not always quite so pleasant. Back in 1858 the river stank so badly of sewerage that Parliament had to be suspended because of “The Great Stink”. This, in turn, led to the creation of London’s sewer system, in 1865. If you feel passionately about our capital waterway, put a note in your diary for Putney Foreshore Festival all through September; visit www.totallythames.org. And, for the first time, the Thames is set to become the venue for one of the most ambitious mass-participation,
on-water sporting events. Regatta London 2019 will see thousands of rowers, canoers and paddle-boarders race from Putney to Greenwich. River traffic will cease, and thanks to the closure of the Thames Barrier on 29th September, London’s tidal waterway will transform into a placid lake. Visit www.regatta.london for info and to take part! Branding itself London’s friendliest, South Bank Sailing Club invite you all to sail year round, from dinghy trips to pub cruises on long, lazy summer days. Word to the wise: their parties are legendary! They hold regular open days to have a go; visit www.southbanksailingclub.co.uk Thames Rowing Club, on Putney Embankment, has a proud and illustrious history. However, back

in 1860 its modest aim was one of “organised pleasure or exercise rowing”. All ages are welcome and even beginners are invited to join and develop to a competitive level. Visit www.thamesrc.co.uk Want to admire the river from all angles without working up a sweat? The Emirates Air Line & MBNA Thames Clippers River Roamer invites you to hop on and off the river and explore the many historic and modern sites on or near its banks as well as enjoying a bird’s eye view of the capital on London’s state-of-the-art skyline. Or else, if you have a party to plan, do check out Hot Tug’s barbecue boat or don your cozzie to captain a loopy-yet-wonderful hot tub in West India Quay and Regents Canal; visit www.hottuguk.com

The river dominates our landscape
Even if you’re mildly aquaphobic, there are lots of ways to enjoy the river without immersing yourself. The Thames Path Challenge 2019 offers you the chance to walk, jog or run along the banks for good causes and the Thames Bridges Trek is a 25km walk, zig-zagging over 16 famous bridges with the best views of the capital. Find out more and sign up at www.thamespathchallenge.com Serpentine Lido in Knightsbridge has amazing views over the royal park. If you fancy a dip, bear in mind that the water isn’t heated or chlorinated and on early mornings (and in winter, brrr!) Serpentine Swimming Club rule the waves, but all are welcome June to September. The family area has a paddling pool and play area. Tooting Bec Lido at Streatham Park, with its iconic multicoloured changing huts, dates back to 1906. It’s the UK’s largest outdoor freshwater pool (90m) and there’s a kids’ paddling pool, café and lockers. You never know who you’ll find bobbing about in Hampstead Heath Swimming Ponds; Helena Bonham Carter is one of the intrepid wild swimmers who take to these chilly (even in summer) waters, sitting on former clay pits. The ponds are open to ladies, men and mixed groups. A hidden gem in the city, Oasis Sports Centre in Covent Garden has an open-air heated pool, sun terrace and adjacent indoor pool. Meanwhile, Charlton Lido in Greenwich is Olympic-sized pool that’s fully heated and boasts two sun terraces, a café, gym and fitness studio (£7 non-members). And, over east, the heated and popular London Fields Lido in Hackney was saved from demolition and reopened in 2006 thanks to people power. Whatever you’re doing this summer, stay cool and make sure that you stay safe! LN

S TAR Q&A
Good Will
Liz Nicholls asks local singer-songwriter Will Young, 40, about life, happiness, his new album Lexicon and upcoming tour
Q.
You’re looking well! You said this new album has been stress-free – is that why? “I think so, yes. Looking after your wellbeing is so important. I now work a four-day week and I’m working with a team I adore. Our rule is that if it doesn’t make us happy, we don’t do it! Also the music inspires me. I think this [Lexicon] is my best album to date.” Q. How do you like to listen to music? “In my car! I love driving down to Berkshire listening to BBC 6 Music… But I actually still own CDs!” Q. What’s your first memory of music? “Listening to Michael Jackson’s Thriller album on a sunny day and looking at the artwork on the LP.” Q. Which tour dates are you looking forward to and which days out will you enjoy close to these? “I always love the New Theatre in Oxford. Kew Gardens in London is so beautiful and fun.” Q. Do you like to travel & where’s next? “I love travelling. I have been to Marrakesh twice in the last few months. My next place is Brazil or India.” Q. Do you consider yourself healthy? “I am healthy-ish. I try to eat greens a lot and drink a lot of water. I think moderation is important but my downfall is chocolate!” Q. What advice would you give to any budding musicians? “It’s about finding your own unique voice and style. All of us are unique and we need to give ourselves the time to explore this.”
14 | JULY 2019
Q. What other projects are on your horizon? “I’m writing a book called How To Be A Gay Man which I’m very excited about. I’m touring the UK in October and also playing Pub in the Park gigs.” Q. It’s lovely to hear you joyful. How do you feel now, looking back at your low period in terms of your mental health? “I feel very proud of how hard I’ve worked over the last seven years. It’s been a huge task and I’m fortunate to have the strength of will but also the time and money. I’m aware I’m very privileged and that’s spurred me to give talks on mental health to businesses around the UK to help set up a system that can aid their employees. Depression and anxiety are partners in that they create a cloud that descends over mind and body. It creates difficulties for one’s ability to function. I always say it’s like swimming in syrup.” Q. Do you have a favourite book, artist, film and piece of music? “Enid Blyton’s Shadow The Sheepdog, Magritte – a Belgian artist, Remains Of The Day and Barber’s Adagio For Strings.” Q. Who would be your dream party guests, living or dead, real or fictional? “Richard and Judy, Richard & Judy and... Richard and Judy!” Q. What would you wish for if you had a magic wand to change the world? “Peace and love.” ● Lexicon is out now. He will perform at this summer’s Pub In The Park shows and has also just announced an extensive UK tour for October 2019, tickets via www.willyoung.co.uk

FOOD
Myrtle magic Jessica Elphinstone visits Myrtle on the New King’s Road, and is impressed by Ireland’s newest culinary matriarch Anna Haugh
H
ere’s a new word I learned today: “Hibernophile”. A lover of Irish culture, Irish language, and hopefully Irish food, named after “Hibernia”, the ancient Roman term for Ireland. Having spent a brief stint at the world famous Ballymaloe Cookery School near Cork this spring, I’m as loved up with the flourishing Irish food scene as ever.
Luckily, Dublin-born chef Anna Haugh spotted an appetite for modern Irish cooking, and decided to bring it to this sleepy end of the New King’s Road. When I meet her, she’s equally enthusiastic about the quiet Dublin-born culinary revolution happening over the Anna spotted Irish channel.
“
an appetite
Myrtle Allen, who founded Ballymaloe House restaurant in County Cork in 1964 and later won a Michelin star, is at least in part the inspiration behind Anna’s restaurant. She’s been a matriarch of Irish cooking for over half a century, and her vast family carry on the legacy. As Anna points out though, Myrtle just cooked the food she loved, in the way she knew how. Honest Irish recipes and seasonal produce came naturally to her, rather than being contrived, and Anna follows in the same vein. A good example is her beef stuffed boxty, a sort
16 | JULY 2019
of giant gnocchi parcel filled with succulent, slow cooked meat and served with roast fillet beef and a tarragon jus. There’s a nod to Ireland for sure, but it’s also unapologetic, classic fine dining. A smoked salmon cigar-shaped roll, filled with a punchy horseradish cream and a side of pickled cucumber (a Ballymaloe staple) is a nostalgic dinner party dish with a twist, and her Cornish hake, served with mussel chowder veloute, is Irish only in the deliciously subtle oat crusting and the Ballymakenny potatoes. Anna started out as a reluctant pastry chef, she tells us, and it’s no surprise her desserts were the highlight of an excellent dinner. Buttermilk panna cotta, mango jelly and cinnamon doughnuts were well executed, but the unspeakably rich dark chocolate tart, offset by a zesty orange ice cream, was utter perfection. My fellow Hibernophile Akeel, who is in fact half Irish, abandoned his usual manners and fought me for the last spoonful. There’s a long-standing Gaelic saying – Cead Mile Fáilte – which means “one hundred thousand welcomes” and sums up the warmth of Anna’s hospitality perfectly. Olympic medal-winning rower Debbie Flood will speak at Putney Rowing Club on Thursday, 11th July, to support prisoners & encourage young people to “dream big”
D
ebbie, who won two silver Olympic and three World Championship gold medals, will talk about her life and career. She is hoping to inspire everyone, but especially young athletes, with her story in aid of SPCK’s Diffusion programme which helps prisoners improve their reading skills. “I’m really excited about this event for SPCK,” says Debbie. “I love talking to people about the highs and lows of my journey through the world of rowing. I hope lots of young rowers and athletes will be encouraged on their own journeys to achieving the best they can in any area of life.”

specially written books free to organisations that work with prisoners, young offenders and people at risk of offending. The books also reduce chances of reoffending, as these quotes testify: “The story helped me to reflect on my poor choices which got me back inside. It stoked a fire inside me to get out of prison and stay out.” Prisoner, HMP Channings Wood
On arrival at the London Rowing Club, overlooking the Thames, guests will enjoy drinks and canapés before Debbie speaks. After the talk Debbie will mingle and each guest will leave with a free goody bag of books, stationery and treats worth over £30.
“Not Such a Bargain is the first book I’ve read fully in over a decade. I really got into it surprisingly seeing as I haven’t managed to read a full book since primary school. Next, I would like to say thanks to you guys for providing this book to my prison… The book touched me in many different ways: [it] was very, very similar to my life and events in my life. It made me think about my own actions more and realise they were wrong, almost bought a tear to my eyes a couple of times.” Prisoner, HMP Lewes
SPCK, founded in 1698, was responsible for setting up 200 charity schools in 18th and 19th centuries, before the state provided free education. Today SPCK continues this tradition by providing books for prisoners to help improve their literacy and employability while thinking about their relationships and how they treat other people. Through the Diffusion Prison Fiction project, SPCK has now distributed 10,000

DAY S OUT
Trust treasures Peter Anderson catches up with Helen Wood about her one-woman quest to visit every National Trust property ahead of her show at the Exchange Twickenham.
F
rom Birmingham’s back-to-back houses to baronial banqueting halls, from mansions to moorland the National Trust’s holdings are many and varied. So how many could you visit in a year? Well, why not go to the Exchange Twickenham to see Helen Wood’s daring one-woman quest to visit every National Trust property and become a certified super-fan. When did Helen discover her talent for comedy? “I did a stand-up course ten years ago and that wasn’t the type of show that floated my boat. I love throwing just about anything into a show; comedy, sketches, in the last
show I did origami with an OS Map. What I enjoy about my shows is the way I take the audience on a journey. Some of them discover they are as obsessed about the subject as I am.” Does she remember the first National Trust property she visited?” I grew
up in Birmingham and there was a National Trust property near where I lived called Packwood House. It sticks in my memory as I was scared when I went there as a child – was it a chill in a corridor or something outside, you’ll have to come and find out!” Speaking of that, what can the audience expect? “They will come on my journey around National Trust properties and land, learning some of the stories about my visits to them, either in researching for this show. “ For your chance to hear Helen’s stories, she is at the Exchange Theatre Twickenham on July 9th for more information please go to www. exchangetwickenham.co.uk.

The leaves are high-tech panels filled with bio-organisms that can remove carbon dioxide and produce breathable oxygen at a rate equivalent to 100 trees. The west London company, named Arborea, has teamed up with Imperial College London as part of the college’s commitment to offsetting the environmental impact of its development at White City. Visit www. arborea.io and creator Julian's bionic chandelier at the V&A at Cromwell Road, South Kensington, SW7 2RL. Finally, here’s a sobering thought about how far we’ve come from the Summer of Love. A new study has revealed how mobile phones and social media are affecting relationships. “Phubbing” – ignoring one’s companion by paying more attention to a mobile phone – is on the rise. The survey was created by Stephensons, who deal in divorce law, and reveals 37% of people in a relationship in London claim they or their partner are distracted by their mobile phone. However, 35% said they'd be prepared to give up their mobile phone for seven days. Could you?
