Rich pickings...

As we hit the height of summer, we’re toasting the best local producers and food & drink gems and would love to hear your favourites...

S

ummer is here and, as ever, we’re hungry for your recommendations of great places to eat and drink as well as tempting local titbits. We’re always excited to bring you our food & drink special and celebrate the people who work in this unremitting industry... Our cover star Jodie Kidd confirms this: she’s found her previous jobs in the fast-paced modelling and sports worlds are nothing compared to being a pub landlady.. but she’s loving every minute and we applaud her! So, does your local deserve a toast? Is there a restaurant or farm shop near you that deserves recognition? We want to help celebrate the best

food & drink pioneers and grafters out there, fuelled by you. Visit www. roundandabout.co.uk to vote! Next month we will deliver our September education guide. Eric Carle, author of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, gave us these wise words as his iconic book is made into a 50th anniversary

show in London: “I attempt to bridge the gap between the home and school. To me home represents, or should represent, warmth, security, toys, holding hands, being held. School is a strange and new place for a child. Will it be a happy place? The unknown often brings fear. I believe children are naturally creative and eager to learn. I want to show them learning is fascinating and fun.” We love this positive message from Mr Carle, who is 90 and still young at heart. With this in mind, we’re inviting your talented youngsters to let their imaginations run riot with our short story competition – watch this space for details; we can’t wait to read your creative entries! See you next month.

an you believe it's been 50 years since Eric Carle wrote this beloved children’s picture book, which for many of us was almost our first memory of reading? If you, like me, are endlessly sniffing out the next delicious thing to nibble on, you’re in luck with our August foodie special… Since being written in 1969 The Very Hungry Caterpillar has been translated into 62 languages and sold more than 50 million copies, remaining one of the bestselling children’s books of all time. A sensational 50th anniversary The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show has a four-week run at Troubadour White City Theatre in Wood Lane, W12 7TS, from Wednesday, 7th August, to Sunday, 1st September. A menagerie of 75 enchanting puppets will faithfully adapt four of Eric Carle’s best-loved books for the stage. Performances are daily at 10.15am and noon (no shows on 13th, 14th, 21st & 28th August) last 45 minutes. To book tickets, £15-25, visit www.Troubadourtheatres. com/white-city or call 0844 815 4866. Fulham foodies, check out the new cocktails and small plates bar, Tipple & Taste, popping up above Fulham's Tommy Tucker Pub, SW6 2DR every Friday this

summer. The pop-up concept is to pair quirky cocktails with weekly-changing dishes, which sounds like the ultimate date night. The menu is enticing, with charred mackerel ceviche, mackerel crisp, horseradish, pickled cucumber and dill sounding suitably cheffy. As for the cocktails, Vanilla Rhubarb Pie sounds perfect to us. On 10th August, there will be live music from local artists. Book tickets; £35 for two cocktails & three dishes; email tippleandtaste@ outlook.com or visit www.tippleandtaste.com Fulham Good Neighbours will host a free afternoon tea on the first and third Sunday of each month for local older people, mainly those who are housebound, 3-5pm. The wonderful charity also hosts free art classes every Tuesday, 10.45am-noon, and a shared reading group on Thursdays, 11am-12.30pm. If you’d like to volunteer, especially to help with transport, they’d love to hear from you. Borough Market’s now-legendary fishmongers and restaurant Applebee’s – famed for bringing the best (sustainably caught) fish & chips to the capital – bring you a four-month pop-up on the Southbank this summer. If you’re going to an event at Underbelly or fancy a walk along the Thames, pop by to enjoy some of London’s freshest shellfish. For VIP treatment, book a table at the dedicated champagne & oyster bar, where the charming team will keep you entertained and ensure a ready supply of negronis; their sea bass ceviche is a particular highlight. There is also live music from some of London’s up-andcoming buskers, and a sandpit for boules. No booking necessary, just head along to 30 The Queen's Walk, Lambeth, SE1 8XX. www.applebeesfish.com

Much-loved coffee brand Allpress celebrate 30 years since their first humble espresso cart in New Zealand, and look back on the part they’ve played in coffee culture. The trendy Allpress Roastery and cafe in Dalston will host a series of summer Allpress Lates on their outdoor terrace, with some of London’s trendiest chefs and street food names coming for one night only. The lates will take place on Fridays throughout August and September, with a different weekly theme, and show-stopping cocktails to match. Visit uk.allpressespresso.com or to Allpress Espresso Roastery and Cafe, 55 Dalston Lane, E8 2NG.

Register for the Seventh annual Glass Door Sleep Out to raise awareness and funds for London’s largest emergency homeless night shelter organisation. Join thousands of other Londoners on Friday, 4th October, for the charity’s annual sponsored sleep out in Duke of York Square, Chelsea. This year Glass Door is hoping to raise £200,000 from the Sleep Out. It costs about £23 to provide each guest with a safe, warm place to sleep, a hot dinner and breakfast. 2019 also marks 20 years since the charity was founded, when several churches united to offer shelter, hearty food, and a warm welcome to homeless people one night a week. Last winter 29 churches opened their doors to provide four night shelter circuits for the homeless in four boroughs. Visit www.glassdoor.org.uk, email sleepout@ glassdoor.org.uk or call 0207 351 4948. A rare flower is coming back from the brink of extinction, after Kew Gardens have entrusted its seeds to ecology experts at Cirencester’s Royal Agricultural University. The distinctive twin flowers of the red hempnettle (Galeopsis angustifolia) were a common sight 60 years ago. Now herbicides, fertilisers, and the spread of highly productive crop varieties have seen it almost disappear. Work began in April when 27,000 seeds from the Royal Botanic Gardens seed bank were sown just outside Cirencester. Visit www.plantlife.org.uk

S TAR Q&A

Kidd pro quo

Model, racing driver, TV presenter & pub landlady Jodie Kidd, 40, tells us about life, local treasures and her foodie favourites

Q

How are you enjoying being a landlady, of the Half Moon in Kirdford? “I absolutely love it. It’s rewarding but an incredibly tough industry. The local pub is a very important part of rural life. That what the main reason I bought my pub; I’ve seen too many villages lose their pub and them turn into houses. It’s such a great loss for the community.” Q. You’re on the Big Feastival bill this year; are you excited? “I can’t wait! Combining food and music is such a great thing and what Alex [James] is doing amazing. Raymond Blanc is going to be there. He’s always been a massive inspiration, not only for his amazing cuisine but also because of Le Manoir with its gardens; There are some I’ve based the Half Moon, on a very small beautiful pubs scale, on this ‘plot to plate’ model.”

in Putney

Q. Where else do you enjoy eating out or a drink? “There are some really beautiful pubs along the river in Putney.”

Q. When did your love of horses start? “My love of horses started from my family who have always had horses. I grew up on a stud farm in Surrey. My father was an international showjumper and polo player, my brother is a polo player and my sister is a dressage rider. So, it’s in the blood!” 10 | AUGUST 2019

Q. Have you always been a foodie? “I was never really a foodie. It only changed when I did MasterChef and I understood the beauty of food rather than just fuel. It changed my whole outlook.” Q. What are your favourite ingredients? “Anything grown in the pub garden and used as a herb or in a dish will evoke huge happiness in me.” Q. Are you working harder now than ever? “It’s a very tough industry with business rates, beer tax and other things like that. The margins are small. But if you’ve got the right people around you, you can do it and it’s very different from modelling and sports! I’m running a team now instead of doing things by myself; that’s been the real difference!” Q. Is there anything you don’t eat? And couldn’t live without? “I don’t eat Brussels sprouts and I have an obsession with wine!” Q. What do you drive? “A BMW I8 Roadster & X5.” Q. What’s your favourite book, film, piece of music and artist? “Shantaram [by Gregory David Roberts], The Shawshank Redemption, The Pearl Fishers Duet and Picasso.” ● Jodie Kidd is one of the stars at The Big Feastival in Kingham, Oxfordshire, 23rd-25th August. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall’s War on Plastic campaign, nick-named #OurPlasticFeedback, is gaining traction after the likes of David Attenborough have shared photos of themselves taking a stand against major supermarkets to persuade them to reduce their single-use plastic packaging. Shoppers are encouraged to return this to the supermarket with a written note or turn to social media to tag the supermarkets responsible for unnecessary packaging. The hypocrisy of some supermarkets has come under scrutiny: Waitrose has outlawed single-use coffee cups for shoppers’ free cup, but seem to be doing nothing about the unnecessary plastic wrapping around fruit and veg. Watch BBC One’s War on Plastic to find out more. Putney's Active Retired Ladies Group welcome new members. They meet every Monday at The Spotted Horse in Putney High Street for coffee (and cake if it’s somebody’s birthday!), 10am-12pm; twice monthly for afternoon tea in Wimbledon; and for local lunch every Friday. This vibrant and inclusive group go on two cultural outings a month and one theatre visit. and explore the rooms where Victoria spent her formative years under the watchful gaze of her mother, the Duchess of Kent. Those who enjoy the BBC drama Victoria will also know Baroness Lehzen, the young princess’s doting yet firm German governess, who created a scrapbook of mementoes which are on show. As well as seeing first-hand the betterknown parts of Victoria’s public life, her family, friendships and interests, a particularly interesting aspect of the latter exhibition focuses on Victoria’s fascination with India, showing extracts from her diary inscribed in Urdu. Visit www.nhm.ac.uk/moon The museum is also holding cheese & wine nights, also under the mystical moon model, in collaboration with local cheese shop La Cave à Fromage, on 13th and 20th August, 7-8.30pm & 9-10.30pm, with wine, charcuterie and bread also served along with lunar facts. Performed in the outdoor splendour of Fulham Palace’s walled garden, The Tempest tells of magician Prospero who is marooned on a desert island with his daughter Miranda. FOOD & DRINK

Raising a toast

We celebrate our homegrown food & drink heroes in this rich patch of London, starting with Jessica Elphinstone’s best summer picks…

T

he presence of the Great British pub on every corner is one of the best things about south-west London. August is the cue to slope off to a sunny pub garden, and my favourite new discovery (other than The Fox and Pheasant, qv) is the secluded little Scarsdale Tarvern near Abingdon Villas in Kensington. They have real ales, a lovely menu and a cosy candlelit terrace with blankets; www. scarsdaletavern.co.uk. The Atlas in Fulham, SW6 1RX, is a perennial fave in our flat for a cheeky weekday drink, with a great leafy terrace and a weekly changing G&Ts. www.theatlaspub. co.uk. The Mitre, SW6 7DU, is also a popular spot, but fiendishly expensive for a pub (an Aperol Spritz costs over £10). www.themitresw6.com The Duke’s Head in Putney also has loads on; comedy nights, quizzes and films. The boathousestyle pub and restaurant is right on the river with plenty of outdoor seating. 8 Lower Richmond Road, SW15 1JN; www.dukesheadputney.com The Churchill Arms in Kensington Church Street is another iconic drinking spot, with every outside wall laden with flowers, and every inside space crammed with Churchill memorabilia. Built in 1750, the pub was apparently frequented by Churchill’s grandparents. It’s an eccentric spot, made even more random by its authentic

Local Pubs›› Thai cuisine. Look out for a hilariously fake blue plaque, stating: “Churchill made his wartime broadcasts here, and laughed at Hitler’s watercolours while drinking banana daiquiris and farting.” www. churchillarmskensington.co.uk Another gem is the Anglesea Arms near Ravenscourt Park, always rammed on balmy afternoons. Look out for the Long Brick Wall with regular exhibitions of work from local artists and photographers. www.angleseaarmspub. co.uk. My mum and dad met in the Admiral Codrington, SW3 2LY; over 30 years ago, so I thought I’d pay a “research” visit . It might not be as booming as it was in the 1980s, but nostalgia aside, it’s a pretty acceptable pub with good food, a nice range of beer, and cocktails (but no outdoor terrace). This summer, kids get a free main and pudding, making it a great stop-off if visiting the nearby Natural History Museum or Science Museum. The Little Blue Door in Fulham is one of our favourite party spots, with the unique concept of your coolest and most bohemian friends throwing an epic house party. This summer, the late-night cocktail bar and restaurant has launched a gin terrace with William Grant & Sons, bringing a new cocktail menu and outdoor garden to party the night away with sport on the big screen and “frosé”; www.thelittlebluedoor.co.uk

Or in the case of Bread Ahead, Matthew Jones’ hugely popular London bakeries, let them eat copious amounts of sticky, delicious cinnamon buns… One of our favourite pit stops in London, anyone with a penchant for outstanding freshly baked goods will probably be familiar with Bread Ahead. Famous for their weird and wacky doughnuts, Bread Ahead has been at the forefront of London’s love affair with baking over the last five years. Forget mass-produced supermarket fare; once you’ve tried their artisanal hot cross buns you’ll never look back. Fancy having a go in the kitchen yourself? Their Bakery School in Borough Market is one of the best out there. It launched in 2014, with the simple aim of showing people how easy it is to create really great bread at home. The perfect

You’ll leave with a belly full of your creations (they serve you a lovely lunch as well) and more pastries than you know what to do with, so make sure to invite friends round! For those who really wish to take it to the next level, there’s a three-day Guide to Sourdough Bread, in which you’ll learn everything you need to know about wild yeast baking, and will create rye loaves, focaccia, brown levain, fougasse and croissants, to name a few. d Taylor and Robyn Simms are the bionic couple behind locally-based soft drinks company Square Root. They tell us more about their journey....

Q. How did this begin? “We started Square Root Soda from our kitchen in 2012 selling ginger beer at a local farmers’ market. Soon we were producing new flavours every week and blown away by demand, so in 2013 we founded Square Root Soda Works to create innovative drinks, made with as much effort as quality alcoholic drinks. A Square Root is a soda made for the love of fruit, for the excitement of the experimental.” Q. What are your backgrounds? “Ed and I met at UCL where we were both studying for science degrees. After leaving Ed went to work in brewing for Redemption Brewery and later Howling Hops and I went to work in the craft beer bar The Euston Tap where the love of all things drinks started.”

or one litre you need; 300g fresh strawberries (washed, stalks removed), a large lemon, 50g caster sugar, half a tsp good quality vanilla extract & a bottle of soda water. Reserve a few strawberries and quickly blend the rest in a food processor using the blade attachment. In batches, add the fruit pulp to a fine mesh sieve placed over a bowl and press through. Repeat until you’ve squeezed the juice

lemon rind (so nothing is wasted) and natural quinine. We think it’s different from anything else out there, more depth of flavour and less sugar.” Q. London has such an exciting food and drinks scene at the moment. How is it to be part of this foodie revolution in the city? “It’s totally amazing, of course. It’s special to be surrounded by so many other passionate, engaged and exciting people. Q. Which other restaurants, brands or products inspire you? “I’ve always been a fan of London Borough of Jam; Lillie does such an amazing job of seasonally making jams and capturing the delicious flavour of whatever fruits are around and I always find myself challenged to work out how to capture that in our drinks. I’m also really into all the small kombucha brands. Since I gave up alcohol in 2018 I find them a great alternative if I’m lusting after a cold glass of wine. I also like pairing them with our rhubarb soda.” ● Square Root has launched a Sonata strawberry soda for summer. Buy in Fulham at Gails Bakery, The Hoarder at West Brompton Crossing, Bailey & Sage and more.

out of all the strawberry pulp; you should have about 150ml. Next, squeeze your half lemon over the sieve to remove any pips and combine the juices. Add the caster sugar and vanilla extract to the bowl. Stir the liquid until the sugar is fully dissolved – you may need to add a touch of water here to help dissolve the sugar but not too much. Once this is done, you have your cordial. You can refrigerate until you’re ready to serve*. Pour the cordial into a litre jug or pitcher. Add ice and fresh lemon and strawberry slices from your reserved fruit and spare half lemon. Gently pour in the soda water to fill the jug and give the soda a gentle stir, then serve, being careful not to release too much carbonation from the water. You’re all done! Try freezing fresh strawberries to make fruity ice cubes if you like and drink up while your fizz is perfectly chilled. Perfecto! Want to mix it up? Replace the lemon juice with the juice of a whole lime for some extra zing!

* If you want to make the cordial in advance, pour it into a cleaned, sealable container. It will keep in the fridge for up to five days.

Q. What ingredients do you use? “Natural ingredients are nonnegotiable. This means we work closely with amazing farmers across the UK, Italy & Spain to get the very best fresh ingredients for our drinks – like rhubarb grown just for us in the Yorkshire Triangle, blood oranges grown in the shadow of Mount Etna in Sicily and elderflower foraged from Hackney and Walthamstow Marshes. Lots of our drinks are seasonal, so we only make the soda when the fruit is available from the growers so there’s always something different for you to try.” Q. What inspired your non-alcoholic G&T? “This one is born from a desire to create a robust, grown-up, alternative to other non-alcoholic drinks on the market. We spent 12 months developing our non-alcoholic gin & tonic, which included months of public trials. The pure ‘gin’ distillate is extracted and blended with our house tonic water, which contains natural British beet sugar, fresh Sicilian lemon juice, juiced on site,

Another iconic event that takes place every August is the BBC Proms, a highlight in the classical music calendar and the traditional summer season. A typically patriotic occasion at the Royal Albert Hall, the chief of the music festival said he hopes that this year’s festival won’t be politically charged, as the focus should be on the music. This year marks 150 years since the birth of its founder, conductor Sir Henry Wood. Following the huge success of Hamilton in the West End, guests will enjoy the first ever Prom dedicated to hip-hop. www.bbc.co.uk/proms

Brentford is just nearby, and if you find yourself in the area, a trendy new bakery and restaurant called Rye By The Water has just opened in The Brentford Project estate. wonders

Can you help change lives by helping a pioneering charity to help people to take to the water? Chairman Robin Nichols OBE explains how you can change lives...

T

he British Disabled Waterski and Wakeboard Association is a national charity with its headquarters at Heron Lake near Staines where we have been successfully teaching people with all types of disability to water ski for the past 39 years. All our full members are people with disabilities and all our helpers are volunteers except for a summer manager/driver and part-time office administrator. We receive no regular grants and are supported by donations and charges to users. What we all learn very quickly is how beneficial it is for people with any type of disability to water ski. With our special equipment and techniques, it can be taught rapidly. To see the almost immediate change in those learning is so rewarding. People who thought such an exciting sport was not possible are boosted and within a day or two their whole outlook changes from feeling deprived to being able to tackle anything. Many of our full members are wheelchair users and for them we use large skis with frames. For those with a loss of limbs we can usually find a way for conventional stand-up skiing. Those who are totally blind take no longer to learn than sighted people because of our teaching. After all, it’s a uniform surface with no obstructions. During 22 | AUGUST 2019

the week we get many disabled groups, often children with cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and learning difficulties. Depending on their individual abilities they may have exciting rides on inflatable devices or be taught to ski. The point is we have something for everyone. Speed over the water is exciting but at the same time it is safe. We know what we do is incredibly worthwhile but quite honestly we are struggling. Firstly we need volunteers to help on and off the water. Secondly we’d like more people with disabilities to come and have ago. Up until this year we had a steady stream of injured service men rehabilitating at Headley Court but this has now closed, its responsibilities moving to Leicestershire. Thirdly we always need financial help. We need to use a large and powerful boat which is aging and we can’t see how to replace it. Our wet suits, dry suits, buoyancy aids and inflatable devices all get heavy use and wear out. Our centre is the best in the world. In competitive disabled water skiing for many years we were champions. Those pioneers have now retired but a new group of younger disabled competitive waters skier are training hard for the World Disabled Water Ski Championships in Norway. They will rely on what they can raise themselves or savings. ● Please visit www.bdwwa.org to help.

FOOD

Country pursuits Jessica Elphinstone enjoys a taste of the Cotswolds in west London at The Fox & Pheasant

I

’m a country bumpkin at heart, and when I moved to Fulham nearly three years ago all my edgy East London pals rolled their eyes and said it was highly predictable, the obvious choice for a Gloucestershire gal like me. It’s true: there’s something about the leafy streets, parks and plentiful dog owners in SW6 that felt like home. But what I always missed was a cosy country pub, with roaring fires and stuffed foxes, the sort you’d turn up to in wellies after a long walk. That is until my little brother moved up to London a couple of months ago, and I always sniffed out the Fox & Pheasant. Hidden in missed a cosy a charming little mews called The Billings, a short walk from Fulham Broadway and country pub Stamford Bridge, I’m embarrassed to say I’d walked past the faded Victorian exterior, with its green tiles and hanging baskets, a hundred times without a second glance.

This is probably exactly what James Blunt and wife Sofia Wellesley wanted when they decided to buy their local boozer and save it from being turned into apartments. It’s understated, and no expense has been spared in retaining the original charm of the 17th century pub. When I walked in, I was transported with a jolt to my favourite 24 | AUGUST 2019

Cotswold pubs, and half expected to recognise the faces at the bar. We plonk ourselves at the bar for a pint of the Fox and Fez, their house lager, and chat to charming manager Toby. The decor is so quintessentially British it feels a bit like a film set, with vintage wallpaper and original 1930s oak panels and locals playing darts. The walled garden is divine, with ivy and jasmine and pot-plants galore, and a Wimbledon-style glass roof ready to pull over in case of rain. We sit here for supper, which blows us away with its quality and freshness and attention to detail. You can have your usual pub classics – scotch eggs; burger and chips; honey & mustard chipolatas; a killer roast with all the trimmings on Sundays. Alternatively you can go off-piste and order soft shell crab tacos with sriracha mayo, or an Ottolenghi-esque roast cauliflower with rocket and dates, sprinkled with dukka grains and toasted almonds. For pudding, don’t miss the sticky toffee pudding soufflé, served with ice cream of the same flavour, which was mind-bogglingly delicious. The Fox & Pheasant is the perfect country escape, while barely having to leave SW6. ● Find The Fox & Pheasant at 1 Billing Road, Chelsea, SW10 9UJ. Since it's summer holiday season, here are some new stats for you, revealing the items Londoners can’t go on holiday without. A survey conducted by YouGov has found electronic devices such as mobile phones, tablets and e-readers are considered Londoners' most important holiday essentials, with 79% (the highest proportion across the UK). Headache and diarrhoea tablets come next, and 5% of holiday makers even pack their own loo roll. A highlight from the survey for me was teabags and masking tape, both of which are also considered "holiday essentials".

On 18th and 19th July, a group of musicians called the Guitar Social attempted to break the world record for the longest ever guitar lesson, at the same time working with charities like the RNIB to give the visually impaired access to the joy of making music. Starting at 6pm on Thursday, 18th July, and running until Friday 19th, the group planned to teach around 200 guitarists in classes of 10, ranging from beginners to the more advanced. Their students included Mary who despite being partially blind and new to the guitar has just played her the first gig. And by the way, she is 96. The event took place at London City Island, a new creative district in East London. Did they break the record? Visit www.guitarsocial.thedrum.com

If you’re not getting out of London for the August bank holiday, chances are you might find yourself at Notting Hill Carnival. A colourful, vibrant celebration of Afro-Carribean culture, it’s Europe’s biggest street party, and takes over the normally spotless streets of Notting Hill, Ladbroke Grove and Westbourne Park. If you have young children, try to go on the Saturday, as things get a lot more out of hand on the Sunday and Monday. The procession begins and ends at Canal Way, Ladbroke Grove W14 next to Sainsbury’s car park. Sixty bands will perform in Monday’s Grand Finale and there will be a world music stage at Powis Square. Follow @nhcarnivalldn for more details!

Every summer, I regret not getting organised and going to the Luna Open Air Cinema, so if you’ve not been then book in before it’s too late! York Minster is a particular out-of-London highlight, where this year guests can watch Harry Potter, Bohemian Rhapsody and Mamma Mia 2 on 27th - 29th August respectively. Kensington Palace will screen The Young Victoria, The Favourite, A Star is Born and Mary Poppins Returns, from 30th July - 2nd August respectively.
