ut whether your Valentine is a husband, girlfriend, Tinder date, downstairs neighbour or your oldest pal this year, the important thing is just taking the time to show you care.
For all you single folk, the team at Manifesto pizzeria in Northcote Road are welcoming singles and groups of friends alike for an anti-Valentine’s dinner on Thursday, 14th February, in honour of the lesser-known Saint Faustino, Italian patron saint of singles. A welcome break from cheesy music and overpriced set menus, this pared-back little restaurant serves up great organic pizza and drinks at affordable prices, without a rose in sight. Tuck into a hearty pizza or two and enjoy an excellent glass of red, or if you prefer to spend the day in your PJs, get the lot delivered. Call 020 7738 9079, email eat@ manifestopizza.com or pop in to 148 Northcote Road. Fulham Palace is set to relaunch this spring after a successful campaign to raise £1.7m. the whole site more accessible. The funding has come from many individual and corporate donors, trusts and foundations, and through the Heritage Lottery Fund. The Tudor Quadrangle (the oldest part of the palace) will shortly see new all-weather paths, and the reintroduction of historic trees and shrubs. The volunteer and community programme will also be expanded. Admission is free to the palace and gardens all year round. The long-awaited and much discussed nationwide exhibition of drawings by Leonardo da Vinci from the Royal collection is set to launch on 1st February. To mark the 500th anniversary of the death of Leonardo da Vinci, 144 of the Renaissance master’s greatest drawings in the Royal Collection will go on display in 12 simultaneous exhibitions across the UK. Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing will give the widest-ever UK audience the opportunity to see the work of this extraordinary artist. Twelve drawings selected to reflect the full range of Leonardo’s interests; painting, sculpture, architecture, music, anatomy, engineering, cartography, geology and botany – will be shown at each venue across the UK. Following the exhibitions at Royal Collection Trust’s partner venues, in May 2019 the drawings will be brought together to form part of an exhibition of over 200 sheets at The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, the largest exhibition of Leonardo’s work in over 65 years. he wonders and mysteries of our oceans will once again be centre stage when Blue Planet II – Live in Concert comes to London’s O2 Arena offering a visual, audio and spectacular concert experience. Due to popular demand, an additional matinee show has been added to the diary and Blue Planet II – Live in Concert will share showstopping moments from the BAFTA award-winning BBC One series. The natural wonders of our blue planet will be highlighted in breath-taking detail, projected on to a giant 4k Ultra HD LED screen all to the accompaniment of the City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra. The concert, which will be hosted by BBC 8 | R&A Fulham
presenter Anita Rani, will feature such memorable moments from the TV series as the crab and eel rock pool chase and the sea lion tuna hunt. And Anita admits she can’t wait to part of it, she says: “The penny hasn’t quite dropped that I’m hosting it because I will be standing there in front of 12,000 people at The O2 and all the various arenas that we’re going to and holding the show together. It’s such an honour to be asked to do this show.” To be precise, Blue Planet II was more than a show on TV she adds, calling it a moment of television history. “If you watched it, and loved it, then you cannot afford to miss this live tour because it’s a fully immersive experience. “You’ll be able to see those iconic moments – surfing dolphins on a huge screen with an February 2019
80-piece live orchestra playing that incredible soundtrack by Hans Zimmer,” she enthuses. But Blue Planet II goes further than even that, showing the power of TV and the way in which it changed people’s attitudes towards singleuse plastic. Anita adds: “It made us aware of the damage we are doing to our beautiful planet and our oceans.” During the filming of Blue Planet II, crews embarked on 125 expeditions, travelled to 39 countries and spent more than 6,000 hours of deep sea diving armed with the latest state-ofthe-art equipment. She is full of praise for the four years it took to film the show saying it “opened our eyes to an alien world”, adding: “It was the talking point for everybody at work the next day. It tells you something about humanity, it tells you something about our planet. It’s something that is embedded, it’s not like watching an entertainment show that is fun and entertaining, watching Blue Planet II hasn’t left me. Those scenes are with us forever.” Join the voyage of discovery and enjoy an experience like no other with Blue Planet II – Live in Concert on Sunday, 17th March, at 3pm. ● Tickets are available from www.AXS.com, www.eventim.co.uk, www.seetickets.com and www.blueplanet2live.co.uk

star Q&A
ART &
soul
Liz Nicholls chats to actor, dad, and all-round charming man Nigel Havers, 67, who is set to star in ART at Richmond Theatre.
Q.
February is here which brings Valentine’s Day! Do you celebrate? “In a word: no! My wife is not interested in Valentine’s Day, thank God. We don’t bother at all. If that sounds unromantic, perhaps it would be to say that I think every day should be Valentine’s Day!” Q. What do you enjoy most about ART? “ART is my favourite play which is why I’ve done it so many times. It’s beautifully written by Yasmina [Reza] and one of the best comedies ever... Thirdly, it’s a joy to take part in because, being such a short play, you’re in the pub before 9pm!” Q. On this touring production of ART you’re visiting lots of theatres; any highlights? “I love it, especially Richmond as it’s so local.” Q. You always have a lot on; how do you relax when you’re not working? Do you watch soaps? “I don’t watch any soaps, no. It being panto season, I haven’t not worked for quite a while – I’ve forgotten how I relax! I tend to keep busy, but if I’m not lying down, I’m walking.” Q. Does your dog accompany you much? “Yes; she’s a black poodle who’s cut like a mongrel so people are always surprised when I tell them her breed. She’s called Charlie and a real character. I live between Wiltshire and London and we often take her to the pub with us. The Bell at Ramsbury is a lovely dog-friendly pub near us. In London there are several; we like Colbert in Sloane Square and a restaurant called Lucio’s in Fulham Road. I don’t know why more places don’t allow well-behaved dogs.” Q. What’s the greatest lesson fatherhood has taught you? “Agree with your daughter! Give them anything they want! Because they’ll win in the end so that little nugget will at least save you time.” Q.Is there anywhere in the world you’d like to visit? “I haven’t been to Vietnam and I’d like to explore that part of the world.” Q. You’re godfather to Jack Whitehall, too. Do you see a hidden side to him? “He’s a very bad influence on me! No; he’s a sweetheart; a really lovely man. There’s nothing secret about him because he lays it all bare in his acts. He’s very honest about his life. When he first started as a comedian, he performed at a pub in Putney and invited me to come along to watch and advise. My advice to him at the end of it was: look – don’t try to be a comedian! Well, that didn’t work and I’m glad he didn’t take it!” ● Nigel Havers, Denis Lawson and Stephen Tompkinson star in ART at Richmond Theatre, 4th to 9th March. La Mia Mamma How could anyone fail to love the story behind La Mia Mamma? Jessica Elphinstone visits this bustling new Italian eatery on the King’s Road where mothers rule the roost...
I
magine the wrench you’d feel if you were Italian, lovingly raised on sundrenched tomatoes and homemade tortelloni and the freshest burrata imaginable, only to find yourself living one day in a cold damp flat in London. A bleak thought, and one which inspired the newly opened restaurant La Mia Mamma on the lower King’s Road. A charming concept, the little restaurant hosts a constant rotation of mamas from different regions across Italy, all keen to bring the flavours of their family home to hungry These Londoners and homesick Italians. Hailing 20 different Italian regions, these matriarchs run from matriarchs run the show for their twothe show month stint in the kitchen. One season they’ll be whipping up a Sicilian Tonno alla Ghiotta, then it’s up north for a Roman cacio e pepe, or Parmigiano Reggiano from Emila Romagna.
“
On the wintery night we visit, it’s Mamma Ilaria from Bologna who welcomes us cheerily into her kitchen. It’s busy and loud, even fairly late on a Tuesday night, so we perch ourselves at the bar where the charming barman rustles up two house 14 | R&A Fulham
negronis. We opt for the regional Mamma’s Menu rather than a more generic á la carte, which is excellent value for Chelsea: antipasti, pasta, dessert and espresso for £28. As you’d expect, the portions are gigantic and flavoursome, hearty and perfect.Gramigna salsiccia e funghi, popular in Bologna’s homes and trattorias but less well-known outside the city, is a particular pasta highlight. Short, squiggly tubes of homemade pasta, with a slow-cooked sausage and mushroom sauce, are served in a hot copper pan and devoured instantly. The fabulous mammas are dressed in chef whites, chatting and bickering loudly as they pile plates high with steaming towers of handmade tagliatelle, and the contentment in the room is palpable. Sound like a cliché? It really is, and I can’t get enough of it. La Mia Mamma a perfect formula for showcasing regional specialities, opening our eyes to diversity and intricacy of Italian cooking that’s so often overlooked.

The greatest
challenge
M
otor racing legend Sir Jackie Stewart is embarking on the greatest and most personal challenge of his life. His wife of 56 years, Lady Helen Stewart was diagnosed with frontotemporal dementia four years ago, driving him to establish the Race Against Dementia (RAD). The three-time Formula One world champion has launched a £2million search for new scientists to develop breakthroughs in the prevention and treatment of dementia. RAD aims to find a solution that will allow millions of people to live longer with dementia. There are 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia and millions more carers and family members who struggle to cope as their loved one suffers. Unless a cure is found, one in three people born today will develop dementia in their lifetime. However, behind each statistic such as these are the real people dealing with the disease and its effects on a daily basis, each with their own unique heart-

breaking story – memories, passions and ambitions that are slowly fading away. The £2m of research funding to find a solution to this will be administered in partnership with Alzheimer’s Research UK and will support innovative new ideas in dementia research through research fellowships. Sir Jackie says: “The Race Against Dementia is the greatest challenge of my life, but with the right people and the right approach we can encourage and accelerate a new way of thinking and cross the finish line with success.” The chief executive of Alzheimer’s Research UK, Hilary Evans said they were very grateful for the support of Sir Jackie and his sons, Paul and Mark. She says: “It has been inspirational to see Sir Jackie and the family step up to this challenge and to pour drive and determination into taking on the greatest medical challenge.

He adds: “Helen has For each person with always been my rock dementia, the annual cost and her razor-sharp mind was one of the to the UK economy is first things that I fell £30,000+ yet only £90 is in love with. Four spent on research per person years on from her diagnosis, she’s still every year

Admitting that his family’s world has been turned upside down, he also acknowledges that they are very fortunate to be able to afford 24-hour specialist care. He says: “I know this is not possible for millions of other families touched by dementia. The cost of care can be enormous and, from a medical point of view, there are very few treatments that can make life easier. This has to change.” The couple’s sons are ambassadors for Race Against Dementia. Paul has written a song to his mother, entitled Praise You, as a gift to thank her for everything she has done for the family over the years. He says: “I wrote the words as a way to trigger special moments that we have shared together. Dementia has impacted not just my mother but all of us and in particular my father.” Mark says his mother has always been a strong and loving parent, dedicating herself to the family. He adds: “Sadly we have seen up close what this terrible disease can do. Singing for
the Brain
Music is key to unlock memories when it comes to dementia care.
S
inging is about so much more than hitting the right notes and making a good sound – it can improve brain activity, wellbeing and mood. For the Alzheimer’s Society it means much more even than that – singing can unlock memories and kickstart the brain, an increasingly key feature of dementia care which is why the society’s Singing for the Brain sessions are so beneficial.
and identities. It’s so important to still include people with dementia in social activities – no one should have to face it alone, “ says Dr James Pickett, head of research at Alzheimer’s Society. He added: “This study suggests that this transformation could be in part due to parts of the brain connecting better for a brief time after hearing music. “Further research is needed to help understand the longer-term effects of music and help show that it’s not only drugs that can help people manage with dementia.”
Singing can reach parts of the brain in ways other forms of communication cannot
Run in dozens of different locations across the country, it aims to boost confidence, self esteem and quality of life by involving people with dementia and their carers in singing sessions.
Professor Paul Robertson, an academic and concert violinist who has made a study of music in dementia care said music tends to stay with us to the end and that the auditory system is the first to fully function at just 16 weeks. He says: “This means you are musically receptive long before anything else. It’s a case of first in, last out when it comes to a dementia-type breakdown of memory.” ● For exact details about locations and dates go to www.alzheimers.org.uk/ find-support-near-you#!/search
Singing for the Brain groups allow people with dementia to express themselves and interact creatively with others. The idea sprang from Singing for the Brain founder Chreanne Montgomery-Smith who when working in a nursing home noticed how residents responded positively to music. Beginning with a quiz which used familiar tunes, Chreanne noticed how gradually everyone joined in, including one woman who couldn’t remember her name but knew every song. She explains: “It made me realise that people with dementia had a special ability to remember songs. Even if people with dementia can’t talk, they may be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet. It helps them – and their carers – to feel life is worthwhile.” The positive effect of Singing for the Brain groups has been proved by talking to those involved. “Dementia is a devastating condition, slowly stripping people of their memories, relationships www.roundandabout.co.uk

Book ahead for some great gigs coming to Fulham’s Under The Bridge (SW6 1HS) in March and beyond. English Blues-rock guitarist Bernie Marsden (who cowrote the multi-million selling hit Here I Go Again while he was a member of Whitesnake) hits the stage on Friday, 1st March. Under The Bridge will host Chelsea Blues, Rhythm and Rock Festival on Saturday, 30th March, 3-11pm. The line up so far includes Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre Band, Deep Blue Sea, JFK Blue and Bourbon Street Revival, with more artists to be announced. Earlybird tickets are now on sale for £20. Head to www. underthebridge.co.uk for more information. Visit Under the Bridge, Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, SW6 1HS.
For a slightly different vibe, English traditional folk band Faustus will perform at The Half Moon in Putney on Sunday, 3rd February. Dubbed “one of Britain’s outstanding folk bands” by The Guardian and nominated in the 2009 BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, the trio are deeply rooted in the English folk music tradition. Grab a flagon of mead and while away your Sunday evening listening to their sweet melodies. Entry £12 on the door for the show, 8-11pm, at venue at 93 Lower Richmond Road, SW15 1EU.
If you’re looking for a way to be more charitable in the local community this spring, The Baron’s Court
Project could be just what you’re after. The charity helps the homeless and those with mental health problems. If you’re able to commit a few hours a week, consider volunteering at the Baron’s Court Project, where you can help out in the kitchen, lead group activities, and offer your specific skills to those in need. Another way of getting involved is by becoming a Friend of the project, donating on a one-off basis or helping to raise funds. The charity also hosts regular supper clubs to bring people together and to raise funds and awareness for the project. Diners enjoy a hearty three-course dinner for £35, with all proceeds going to the charity. For more information, visit www.baronscourtproject.org, or contact the project on services@baronscourtproject.org or 020 7603 5232. Art lovers! Ruskin’s bicentenary will be marked with a free talk at the Museum on London. Professor Malcolm Andrews will discuss the art critic’s incredible achievements with a close focus on four or five particular paintings, giving a chance to explore Ruskin’s distinctive genius in evocative "word-painting" as he celebrates and critiques Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites. No need to book; it's a first-come, first-served basis. The lecture is 1-2pm on Monday, 4th February, at the Museum, 150 London Wall, EC2Y 5HN. Doors will open 30 minutes before the start. & BEYOND BOWIE
Liz Nicholls chats to Woody Woodmansey ahead of the Holy Holy show this month...
T
hree years on from Bowie’s death, his bandmate Woody Woodmansey still finds the concept of him being “gone” utterly surreal.
“He’s probably in my thoughts most of the time,” says Woody, “but it’s the same for everyone – he doesn’t go away. The music we created has lasted the test of time. We never ever thought the music we made 40 years ago would still be on the radio.” Together with producer Tony Visconti, drummer and “Spider Man from Mars” Woody are getting set to take their Holy Holy tour around the UK with an all star band including glorious Bowie-esque vocals from Heaven 17’s Glenn Gregory. The group will perform Bowie’s material from 1969-73.

history. “The music industry had become so boring and we wanted to give it a kick up the ****, which I guess we did!” laughs Woody.
I ask Woody whether his love of music started at school. “No! I didn’t become aware if music until after school,” he laughs his throaty, smoky cackle. “I just played Hendrix, Led Zep and Cream records, putting my finger on the vinyl to slow it down a bit and hear what the drums were doing so I could copy it. I only learned the rudiments later.”
I ask Woody about meeting David for the first time, when he arrived at his flat in a big gothic building in Beckenham... “I had all these questions in my head,” says Woody. “Like: was he clever or thick? Could he write? Mick [Ronson] had raved on and on about him. I was expecting this curlyhaired folkie from Space Oddity but he opened the door in a rainbow T-shirt, silver belt and red corduroy trousers and shoes he’d painted blue stars on. We chatted about music and I could tell he was intelligent. Then he picked his 12 string up and amazed me with his presence – he never flinched for a moment.”
This time three years ago, Woody and the band were playing the High Line in New York, not far from where David lived. “It was his birthday and Tony decided to call him. We played a bad karaoke version of Happy Birthday. The audience joined in and he loved that. He asked them what they thought of Black Star, which had come out that day and they went wild! We said we’d catch up soon but of course never did because two days later his son messaged the news. David had always seemed invincible. On the Ziggy tours he was barely eating and was often really ill but he always got on stage and smashed it. After the news we weren’t sure whether to carry on but David would have so we did, in celebration of him. And here we are now, still celebrating him. Our rider might be a bit less rock and roll but the spirit is just the same.”
Woody duly turned down the tempting offer of a managerial job at a glasses factory in his native Yorkshire to join Bowie down in London and make

ideo games probably had a leading role in many people’s homes over the festive period so how about visiting an exhibition devoted to them? ‘Videogames: Design/Play/Disrupt’ at the V&A gives a unique insight into one of the most significant design fields of today, looking at the work of designers, player communities and conversations that define the genre. The exhibition explores videogames since the mid-2000s when advances in technology such as improved broadband, social media, smartphones and new ways of making games changed the process and thinking behind them, making

Following huge success, critically acclaimed drama The Wider Earth has extended its run and will now play until 24th February. Charting the adventures of the young Charles Darwin, the play is on at the custom-built theatre in the Jerwood Gallery in Kensington’s Natural History Museum featuring a cast of seven and 30 extraordinary hand-crafted puppets representing the exotic wildlife Darwin encountered. The play celebrates the incredible complexity of our planet and Darwin’s adventurous spirit as he faced perilous environments and unknown dangers on his bold voyage. Written and directed by Dead Puppet Society’s creative director David Morton, the idea for The Wider Earth was conceived at a residency in Cape Town in 2013 with the Handspring Puppet Company – the creative team behind War Horse. New York’s legendary Metropolitan Opera are being streamed live in London cinemas for the 13th year, with Georges Bizet’s Carmen hitting screens on Saturday, 2nd February, for one day only. The four-act operatic masterpiece centres around the defiantly free-spirited Carmen, starring mezzo-soprano Clémentine Margaine as the ultimate seductress. Her lover, the scorned and jealous Don José is sung by Roberto Alagna, with Aleksandra Kurzak and Alexander Vinogradov as Micaëla
and Escamillo supporting the principal cast. Tickets are available for the live cinema screening at Vue Westfield, as well as cinemas across the city. www.metliveinhd.co.uk Whiz down the UK’s tallest public artwork with a 40-second ride on the tallest and longest tunnel slide in the world, the ArcelorMittal Orbit. Twist and turn your way down the sculpture at speeds of up to 15 miles per hour (24 kilometres per hour) as you glimpse London’s skyscape passing by through sections of light. A perfect half-term outing, the Slide at the ArcelorMittal Orbit is both exhilarating and educational. Created by sculptor Anish Kapoor and engineer Cecil Balmond, the magnificent looping structure of the ArcelorMittal Orbit is an iconic symbol of Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London 2012 Games, and the best place to see the sweeping panorama of the city. Made of 35,000 bolts and enough steel to make 265 double-decker buses, the ArcelorMittal Orbit offers extraordinary 20-mile views over Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and the London skyline. Steel was partly chosen as a building material for its infinite recyclability – 60% of the ArcelorMittal Orbit is made from recycled steel, including washing machines and used cars.
