“The wild western frontier of bohemian Chelsea” is how this little patch of South West London was described.

nd that depiction of our little bit of London as a liberal haven for bright young things struck a chord. With the dawn of 2019 I’ve endeavoured to search out that beatnik spirit still lurking in the shadows...

One such fragment of the past can be found in Dance Attic just up the Fulham Road, a wonderfully outdated establishment where West Londoners head for pay-as-you-go dance classes of all description. While ballet has traditionally played a large part, tango, hip hop, capoeira, and ballroom are all flourishing. A small co-operative cafe operates, and it’s warming to see this little bohemian outpost of dancers still exist just a stone’s throw from Fulham Broadway. Prices are reasonable too, with a £2 daily membership fee on the door and then a fee of £5-£7 paid directly to the teacher. No bookings needed. To see a timetable visit www.danceattic.com or just turn up at Old Fulham Baths, 368 North End Road, SW6 1LY. to some excellent new shows. The RSC bring Don Quixote to Garrick Theatre in Covent Garden packed with jokes and slapstick humour. Enjoy a fun adaptation of Cervantes’ 17th century novel about a deluded, eccentric knight who goes on ludicrous adventures around Spain with his squire. For something more outlandish, Magic Mike Live comes to a specially kitted out new 360º theatre at the Hippodrome Casino in Covent Garden. The spin-off adaptation of the beloved stripper comedy that made Channing Tatum a household name is co-directed by the man himself. Don’t mooch about just because it’s January. What better way to get out and about and enjoy yourself than a good giggle at the South Kensington Comedy Club? Every Tuesday night Peter Merriment hosts a night of live stand up featuring some of the best acts from the comedy circuit. And if you fancy being frugal, the hilarious Gary Graham Knightley hosts a free show every Monday night from 8pm featuring seasoned pros of the comedy scene as well as brand new acts. The comedy club can be found above the Hoop & Toy Pub, 34 Thurloe Place SW7 2HQ.

If ever there was a classic new year’s resolution to break, it’s learning a new language - notoriously hard to motivate oneself. A good way to stick at it is to meet up with fellow learners at The Language Social, every Sunday in Maida Vale. If you are learning Spanish, French, Italian or English and are interested in practicing and improving your language skills, then head to the free meetings for all levels take place from 5pm-7pm in The Prince Alfred pub, a locals favourite in Maida Vale since 1856. Located just minutes from the picturesque canals of Little Venice, the Victorian boozer is worth a visit in its own right. Head down to The Prince Alfred, 5A Formosa Street W9 1EE. Here’s another one for those looking for a ‘New Year, New Me’ activity: Do something crazy and join the Hash House Harriers, combining running and socialising clubs, based around the traditional English sport of Hare and Hounds. The West London contingent meet every Tuesday for a pint or two, before the run at around 7.15pm. The pack of runners pursue a trail that has been laid in advance, using chalk or flour, by the ‘Hare’. Just turn up on the night in running shoes, or, if you wish, email westlondonh3@gmail.com in advance. A sense of humour and a willingness to socialise are more important than running ability. Liz Nicholls reflects on a tumultuous year in world politics, thanks to Tim Benson and the talented cartoonists who have depicted 2018 in satirical pictures...

F

ew people might have relished the political drama served up throughout 2018... However, by way of positive spin, it has been a gift to cartoonists.

“It’s been fantastic!” exclaims Tim Benson, editor of Britain’s Best Political Cartoons and co-owner of The Political Cartoon Gallery & Café in London. “Over the last six years you couldn’t have made up the world events... For a cartoonist, it’s been like a daily treat. And the characters; from Jeremy Corbyn to Jacob Rees Mogg, Boris Johnson to Kim Jong Un... so many subjects to have fun with! No one knows what’s going to happen next.” We’re just kissing goodbye to 2018; a feverish year in which Brexit got serious, football fever, a 8 | R&A Fulham

UK heatwave and royal wedding mania gripped us all and Trump got transformed into a giant baby blimp (see above, by Peter Brookes of The Times)... Times of political turmoil test the mettle of our nation’s cartoonists – the best in the world. “We’re very lucky in this country, because cartoonists have more freedom here than anywhere else, which is something to be proud of,” says Tim. A historian with a particular interest in 20th century political history, Tim’s PhD was on Sir David Low’s relationship with Lord Beaverbrook, his editor at The Daily Express. He began collecting political caricatures and has written several titles on political cartoon art, a vital form of satire, from 19th century etcher James Gillray via wartime January 2019

master Sir David Low to today’s top draw. As a die-hard fan of newspapers myself, it’s cheering to read that it is also a media that works best in print. Tim rejoices in the art form, pointing out that, while cartoonists might be the “canaries in the mine” when it comes to budget cuts, it has survived the industrial revolution, print censorship and two world wars. “And we still have a culture of daily political cartooning in the broadsheet press: Evening Standard editor George Osborne recently reinvigorated his opinion pages by bringing back the political cartoon after a hiatus of 13 years.” Along with his partner Julie Dangoor, Tim has bought, sold and exhibited original cartoon art for 15 years. Their gallery is the world’s only venue dedicated to original political cartoon art, ranging from the Guardian’s Steve Bell and The Daily Telegraph’s Bob Moran to yesteryear greats “Vicky” (Victor Weisz) and Carl Giles as well as original gag cartoons from Punch and Private Eye. Tim has edited six Britain’s Best books, published by Random House. “It’s fabulous because I get to play God,” he tells me. “Selecting my favourites is hard because there are so many good cartoons. As for depicting people, David Low called them ‘tags of identity’ and politicians often play these up – Theresa May’s leopard print shoes, Howard Wilson choosing a pipe even though really he was a cigar man... To be in politics you need the hide of a rhinoceros but the higher up the greasy pole you go, the more vain you can get... When Steve Bell got wind David Cameron was really irked by being depicted with a condom on his head, it felt like winning the lottery. Cartoons are a wonderful in the ‘now’ but also, when you put them into context, become a kind of commentary.”

Agonising over which school to select? Ignore the dinner party chat and focus on what you know best: your child

S

electing the right school can prove difficult and frustrating. Academic performance is important, but so too are facilities, size, pastoral care and general ethos. Many popular prep schools have a strong academic focus, reflected in formal assessments at 7+ and 8+, ahead of interviews for prospective students. “Schools like Westminster Under School, St Paul’s Junior School and Bute House want to know candidates are on the right path from a relatively early age,” says Jeremy Edwards, a former prep school head who is now a schools consultant for Ivy Education. “If your child enjoys

a challenge, these prep schools will prove motivational and stimulating.” Knightsbridge School is an example of an institution which looks beyonds academic performance. Principal, Magoo Giles, adds: “Investing in our children’s leadership and teamwork is an ambition, that empowers them.”

What can parents do to help? Discuss favourite subjects with your child and encourage any genuine extracurricular interests. Sports or other activities will engage your child, particularly if they improve with the help of a coach, older sibling or a tutor. Speaking to friends with children at shortlisted schools or reading forums can provide genuine perspectives on schools; however, thinking about your child’s personality, interests and strengths and discussing these with specialists will offer more balanced, independent advice and support. ● Ivy Education is a premium tuition and consultancy company in Fulham. staggering 6,764,475 birds were spotted during last year’s RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch, thanks in no small part to the thousands of schoolchildren who joined in. Youngsters spotted robins, starlings and blue tits among the millions recorded for the annual count. And now it’s time to do it all over again to see which ones are thriving and which ones need your help to survive. The house sparrow (pictured right) was the most common bird again in 2018, happy in both urban and suburban areas. Other birds flying high in the surveys included the goldfinch, long-tailed and coal tit while robins were down, largely due to the mild winter which made food more widely available in the countryside meaning the red-breasted bird didn’t have such a need to visit our gardens.

Would you like to include your school or business in our next

education supplement?

As we enter a new year, Karen Neville teams up with the RSPB to encourage you and the schoolchildren in your family to spot local birds in your garden The birdwatch is 40 years old this year and has grown hugely since youngsters were given the opportunity to get involved in a simple winter activity. From counting the birds in your garden to determine which are the UK’s top 10 most common species, the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch has become one of the most participated in nature events across the country, enjoyed by young and old. Only a few hundred children were expected to take part when it started in 1979, but thanks to Blue Peter, more than 34,000 surveys were completed and results gathered. Now schools turn their classes into conservation zones and help track the ups and downs in bird numbers through a variety of fun

pine cone lardy seed feeders and a suet and nut log are just some of the tasty treats to encourage feathered friends to feel at home!

Simple survey sheets are a great way to get started, helping you to count the birds with colourful worksheets designed for three age groups – five to seven years, seven to 11 and 11 to 14-year-olds. Focussing on the most common birds likely to be seen, youngsters are invited to record how many of each one they see and to draw any not included as well as recording any unusual features noticed.

Games are also a great way for pupils to learn about the birds around them and recognise them as they take part in the count – try matching pairs of pictures with a fun memory game or how about a “top trumps” game comparing your favourite feathered facts?

Why not feed the birds as you record them and perhaps even entice a few more into your garden or school grounds? The RSPB has a range of recipe ideas that you can make too – pastry maggots, 12 | R&A Fulham

Happy families Choosing a school or nursery for your child can be a case of heart versus head...

A

t The Royal School, we understand choosing the right school for your child will be one of the most important decisions you ever make.

It is a decision that you will take with your head, having completed all the necessary research, but we know that you will really take it with your heart, based on your knowledge of your child and of his or her particular needs at any given time in their education. There are many factors that a parent needs to consider. When seeking a nursery for your two-year-old, questions around sleep routines, food, toilet training and managing tears and tantrums will be high on the agenda. When seeking a primary or prep school, you will have questions about curriculum, homework, pupilteacher ratio, friendships, lunches and wrap

14 | R&A Fulham

around care. When it comes to selecting a senior school, considerations relating to the curriculum, examination results, behaviour management, ethos, class size, extra-curricular provision and the school environment will be on your mind. And when you are looking for a sixth form, you will want to know about university destinations, examination success, opportunities for the development of life skills and careers education. The list goes on… Here in the south east, parents are blessed with a wide range of excellent schools and nurseries from which to choose and the choice can sometimes feel rather overwhelming, especially when friends and family also add their opinion into the mix. In the end, the decision is easier than you would think. Take time to visit the schools and nurseries in the area. Look beyond the first impression of bricks and mortar – is there a purposeful buzz of activity? Do the children or young people look happy and engaged? Do the teachers appear passionate about their subject? Is the head teacher approachable? Choosing a school or nursery is rather like choosing a family home; it can all seem incredibly complicated, but ultimately, it is the one that has the right feel that will be the right choice. This is very personal; one size does not fit all!

tagecoach Performing Arts Fulham is encouraging youngsters to ‘digitally detox’ and help them stay active during the winter months by joining one of its classes. The performing arts group has had an exciting year with students involved in singing, dancing and acting in the West End and appearing on live TV in celebration of a Guinness World Record attempt. Through its Saturday classes and with a new Friday school, launching this month, children are given a unique experience, offering an opportunity to sample a variety of musical and theatre genres. Stagecoach hopes to entice them away from the screen and to learn new skills instilling in children ‘Creative Courage for Life’ and inspiring them with the confidence to develop in all areas of life. Principal Alison Bullman says they are thrilled to launch the new Friday classes: “The increased demand for performing arts in the area reflects a desire amongst youngsters to express themselves creatively and develop new skills, away from the www.roundandabout.co.uk

lure of screens.” And she says there are even more exciting events planned over the coming months, including Stagecoach Live at the Shaftesbury Theatre, giving students the chance to showcase their talents to a large audience and with a special performance at the Olympic Stadium. Stagecoach Fulham’s Saturday classes are running at capacity but the new Friday classes begin on Friday, 11th January. Early Stage classes (four to six years) will run from 4.15pm to 5.45pm, with sessions for six to 18 years from 4.30pm to 7.30pm.

Adult Y

learning

es, young brains are most adept at learning languages and skills, but the benefits of taking up a new skill after school age are many!

For those who are recently retired or considering a career change, a lack of direction can be demoralising. Embarking on an adult learning course and picking up new skills can be incredibly rewarding, and fun too. Signing up to a new course, trying out a new sport, learning a new language or experimenting with a new instrument can boost . It’s important to step outside of your comfort zone from time to time and apply yourself to something completely new. Lifelong learning helps you to continually grow and develop as a person and it’s good for your mental ability if you’re always putting your mind to something new. learners, a survey by the Workers’ Educational Association suggests. According to the survey of 2,000 adult learners, education boosts confidence about finding employment and benefits local communities. Of course, we’re constantly told that physical exercise is important for keeping our bodies in good condition, but it’s just as important to keep your mind active, too. Taking in new information helps to stimulate your mind, and studies have proven that this can help to reduce a person’s risk of Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. You’re never too old to learn, and with advances in technology making e-learning more accessible than ever, there are no excuses for not giving it a go.

For some ideas about adult learning choices, visit www.wea.org.uk and check out the University of the Third Age. Your monthly Ramblings will also include lots of options!

WORK experience

ork experience can be a daunting prospect when you’re in Year 10 and more interested in playing on the X-Box or the latest gossip. But it’s more important than just a week off lessons...

It’s a great way to find out whether a certain type of career is for you. You’ll get the chance to learn new skills, make contacts and experience what it’s like working a whole day. But where do you begin? A good place to start is follow your passions. Try to do something you’re interested in – if, for example, you love animals, contact any zoos or animal sanctuaries. If being on stage or behind the scenes is your thing, try local theatres. Once you have a general idea start checking out the businesses and companies in your area as well as speaking to your school careers adviser. 16 | R&A Fulham

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks? Here are some reasons why learning in later life is beneficial!

And don’t be disheartened if places you contact aren’t able to help; there are plenty of options. Some companies offer structured placements but competition can be tough so make sure you know what you want and how to ‘sell’ yourself. Many places will expect you to complete an application form too so double check your spelling and grammar when doing so. Having gained a place, hopefully with your chosen employer, put your nerves aside – a tricky one – and remember to make contact ahead of your placement to confirm details such as times, dress code, what to wear etc and a bit of research on them doesn’t do any harm, either. You’re now ready for your first proper day at work – make the most of it, you never know where it could lead… Karen Neville January 2019

The right choice for your daughter’s future Queen Anne's School is an independent boarding and day school for girls aged 11-18, set just north of the River Thames, located in Caversham, Berkshire. We welcome day girls and those who wish to board, either fulltime or weekly, and care for them all to the highest standard. We are less than half an hour by train from London, with frequent trains from Paddington to Reading. The 35-acre site offers plenty of space for sport, including lacrosse, netball and tennis, as well as art and drama. Queen Anne’s first-class teaching includes a tutorial system that encourages students not only to achieve academic success but to develop a love for and enjoyment of learning. A new music centre with specialist-designed areas for practice and performance, and an award-winning sixth form building with a digital learning zone, learning pods, breakout rooms and a café helps facilitate collaborative and dynamic learning.

A unique feature of Queen Anne’s is its innovative approach to understanding the teenage brain, reflecting BrainCanDo, the psychology and educational neuroscience research programme started by the Headmistress, Julia Harrington, five years ago. ‘You cannot teach, guide or inspire a teenager with any success unless you understand what stimulates their exuberant brains, or stalls and depresses them,’ says Mrs Harrington. ‘Our positive and inclusive approach to learning and behaviour helps every girl to get the best from themselves. It supports and engages them while they are at school but also prepares them for a successful and happy life beyond.’

Millions still unclaimed

I

n the last 2 years alone, over £7.5 billion was refunded to consumerswho were mis-sold PPI but, despite these enormous sums being paid out, many older consumers still haven’t investigated if they are owed anything and many never will. Carol Platt is one of the directors of JMP Partnership. They have specialised in PPI claims for 12 years now. “Anyone aged over 35 who has ever had a loan, credit card or mortgage is likely to be affected by this scandal, but the people who are owed the most, by FAR, are those aged over 55.” Mrs A aged 51 got £2,250, Mrs K aged 47 got over £17,000 from Next and M&S and Mrs R aged 71 got just under £4,000. All clients of JMP Partnership living in SW6.

So why are so many people — especially those aged over 55 unlikely to receive the huge sums they are owed? There are several reasons, according to Carol. INERTIA — many older people simply don’t know what to do to get their money back, so they do nothing. FEAR — they know there are companies out there like JMP Partnership they can turn to for help, but they don’t know who they can trust.

Carol Platt, of JMP Partnership. BANKS TELL LIES — many people have already contacted their bank and been told they weren’t sold PPI when that JUST wasn’t true. So why should people in Fulham trust JMP Partnership to manage their claims? JMP Partnership is regulated by the Ministry of Justice’s Claims Management Regulation Unit, soon to be part of the FCA. They are a Trading Standards Approved small family business and have helped thousands of people to reclaim more than £60 million most of which relates to missold PPI. Trading Standards has never, in 12 years of trading, received a single complaint from a client of

JMP Partnership. “We can’t promise to get anyone a refund but as we work on a No win, No fee* basis you know for sure we will do our best to find and recover any money you might be owed” said Carol. JMP Partnership charges 20% + VAT of the gross sum refunded Visit their website at www.jmppartnership.com/ppi-refunds/round-andabout Alternatively, you can call 01983 403390. *No win no fee agreements are subject to a cancellation clause.

DISBELIEF — they simply don’t believe they are owed anything. EVIDENCE — many people wrongly believe they will have to provide the evidence they were sold this product.

n 2015, Lloyds Bank was fined £117 million by the FCA for failing to treat their customers fairly when handling PPI complaints.

Carol Platt said: “There is such widespread misconduct still going on that it is shocking at times. Almost every day now for months we have been sending examples to regulators and recently we started copying them to the BBC because the misconduct continues unabated’’. Make no mistake, the banks do NOT want to make this process easy. ‘’Re-

cently one bank even started sending documents to us that had printing so small we were having to read hundreds of pages of statements with a magnifying glass’’. Over 1.4 million PPI complaints have had to be escalated to the Financial Ombudsman Service because banks have rejected them and some of those complex cases have taken more than 6 years to get upheld. ‘’But in most cases we get the result we are seeking in the end, and when we do, clients receive letters like the one here’’.

JMP working with the BBC to expose scandal.

J

MP Partnership has been working with BBC News and BBC Radio 4 over the last few months to expose some of the deceptive behaviour that banks have been involved in.

BBC News and the BBC consumer affairs programme You & Yours on Radio 4 have already run a number of stories and the people interviewed for these programmes were clients of JMP Partnership.

‘Over the last 5 years we have sent hundreds of examples of widespread misconduct to the FCA (banking regulator) and the point came earlier this year when it became apparent that nothing was being done to stop it’ said Jon Platt, Managing Director of JMP.

Stephen Pearce from Wales was one of the people who agreed to tell his story to the BBC.

Since JMP Partnership started exposing this scandal with the help of the BBC, both Barclays & HSBC have been forced to admit that they will have to write out to tens of thousands of consumers they gave misleading information to.

Stephen said “Barclays replied to me and said that I didn’t have PPI, and I was prepared to accept that at the time because I assumed the bank had done its research and that was the truthful and correct answer”, he said. After beginning to doubt what he was told, Mr Pearce hired a CMC (JMP Partnership) to pursue the matter. Barclays finally wrote back and admitted he had PPI after all. The bank accepted that the PPI policy had

been mis-sold and offered Mr Pearce a refund of £3,991.52. Sharon Humby from the Isle of Wight was lied to by Natwest and that lie cost Natwest over £4,000 in total compensation. More scandals are set to be exposed in the New Year. Read two of the stories online at www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-45631655. www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-your-money-46260409

Scottish or not, the annual Burns Night knees-up is always a great excuse for a party. It’s celebrated this year on Friday, 25th January, with haggis and whisky alongside a spot of poetry, in memory of the iconic 18th century poet. The Brown Cow on Fulham Road do an excellent Burns Night dinner party, which last year included the beloved deep fried Mars bar, as well as a questionable Irn-Bru ice cream. Visit www.thebrowncowpub.co.uk for details and to book. Also get your fix of highland meat and game at Scottish restaurant Mac & Wild, at their two locations in Fitzrovia and Devonshire Square. For more raucous Highland celebrations, track down a ceilidh and dance the night away. The Ceilidh Club will be hosting a Burns Night ceilidh at Hammersmith Town Hall on 19th January, with tickets available online for £37.50 (concessions £25). Doors open at 7pm and haggis, neeps and tatties are served buffet style between 7.15ish and 10ish. Dancing starts at 8pm and at half time (about 9.20) the haggis is piped in with the Address to the Haggis. Dancing until 11pm before festivities end with Auld Lang Syne. No dress code, but tartan is appreciated and dressing to impress is key. If you would like to recite a Burns poem or song then please get in touch via www. ceilidhclub.com. Alice’s adventures Academic, writer and Digging for Britain broadcaster Professor Alice Roberts chats to Peter Anderson ahead of her speaking tour this month

Q.

What sparked your interest in anatomy? “I’ve always been fascinated by the structure of the human body and by evolution. I read books by Richard Dawkins and Steven Jay Gould voraciously as a teenager, as well as watching David Attenborough; Life on Earth had a huge impact on me. I slipped from medicine into academia, teaching anatomy to medical students, and I did a PhD comparing the skeletons of humans and other apes. I just found anatomy endlessly fascinating; I still do!”

Q. Do you hope teenagers follow your career path? “Not particularly! I hope to inspire teenagers about the world, the wonders of science and archaeology, evolution and history. But, in of choosing what to study and a career, Creativity in terms children should be nurtured and offered the classroom is unfettered opportunities, rather than being encouraged into one area. I’m uncomfortable so precious with the focus on pushing science subjects at school – I can’t help feeling it’s sometimes at the expense of other subjects which are just as valid and fascinating. I’m worried by the marginalisation of art, music and drama in schools.”

Q. Who are your biggest inspirations? “Richard Dawkins and Steven Jay Gould, and Attenborough, of course. But it was probably my teachers at school who had the most impact on me. The 24 | R&A Fulham

lessons would spark off in all kinds of directions – and we had the glorious feeling learning was something we could lead. That kind of creativity in the classroom is so precious.” Q. How do you relax away from work? “I draw, paint, go for long walks and I love kayaking, on rivers and the sea, whenever I can. I love watching films with my kids, and reading to them. Visiting friends is important too – a lot of mine are also busy, working mums and dads – and it’s important to make time for a good cup of tea and a chat.” Q. We now have a female Doctor Who. If you were in charge of the Tardis, which period of history would you travel back to and why? “The Bronze Age. I’d love to see people living in a Bronze Age village, like the one at Must Farm (near Peterborough) – in roundhouses built on stilts over the edge of a river, paddling log canoes out on the water and driving their cattle down to the riverside to graze. I’d love to know how they wore the beads we find on our digs, and what they cooked for tea! I’d also love to know about their stories – and what they believed in – but I’d need a translator!”

Wing & a prayer Jessica Elphinstone enjoys a great winter-warming feast at the iconic Bird in Hand in Kensington.

A

couple of strong negronis and a Charlie Chaplin down and we’re getting our fowl-related sayings a little confused. Happy as larks, and free as birds, we ponder the origin of The Bird in Hand’s unusual name. We quiz our lovely waitress, Thea, who doesn’t reveal much when she tells us the pub has simply always been called this. Built in 1926 on the site of an older pub from 1871, the original stone plaque remains in pride of place above the door, and all the striking period architecture is intact.

It’s blowing a wintry gale the night we visit, and the candlelit pub couldn’t have felt more cosy against the Arctic winds The Bird in outside. A farmhouse atmosphere with exposed bricks and log Hand strikes a pervades, piles and a couple of dogs roaming good balance around. The reason behind the name of this charming pub in quiet Brook Green remains a mystery, so we move onto the menu for entertainment. A selection of small plates (£8-12) are orderly divided between garden, sea and land, with a strong Italian theme running throughout the elements.

Baked Saint-Marcellin cheese topped with roasted figs is an excellent little starter, with 28 | R&A Fulham

subtle butternut squash and ricotta ravioli from the garden section alongside. A quenelle of chicken liver parfait is unexpectedly creamy and flavoursome, thickly spread across toasted sourdough and drizzled with truffle honey. Fat, salty anchovies on toast are lovely and comforting, the sort of simple Sunday evening supper best enjoyed by a roaring fire. Juicy duck breast with pied bleu mushrooms are equally delicious, tempered with a mineral-rich glass of Marcillac Lo Sang del Pais. For those looking for something more casual, the pub also operates an entirely separate pizza menu. Tempting flavour combinations such as the Gustosa (£13.50) topped with nduja sausage, gorgonzola and piquillo peppers catch our eye on the next door table. We resist, and save room instead for a spiced pumpkin tart with cinnamon ice cream. It does not disappoint. With the trappings of a country pub but the menu of a smart London restaurant, The Bird in Hand strikes a good balance, and is certainly worth two in (Shepherd’s) bush! Thea tells us she’s flying the nest this month as the group launches a sister restaurant called The Oak SW11 in Battersea, and we have every hope it’ll be just as good.

Alu Gobi N

ot only extremely popular across India, alu gobi has also made its mark in Britain. It’s a customer favourite, enjoyed with a naan or a chapatti as a main meal or even a side dish. If you are looking for the perfect Punjabi vegetable dish which is quick and easy to prepare then look no further; it’s what I call simple food – hearty and tasty at the same time.

Ingredients: 6 tbsp vegetable oil, two finger green chillies, finely chopped, one medium onion, finely chopped, 1 tbsp ginger and garlic paste, 2 tomatoes, finely diced, 1 ½ tsp salt, 2 medium potatoes, peeled, diced into ½ inch cubes, 300ml water, 500g cauliflower florets, 2 tbsp fresh coriander, finely chopped, 1 tsp cumin seeds, 1 tsp turmeric, ¾ tsp red chilli powder, 1 tsp garam masala, 2 tsp dried fenugreek leaves, crushed

Method: 1. Heat the oil in a sauté pan for one minute. 2. Add the cumin seeds to the oil together with the green chilli and when the seeds begin to sizzle, add the chopped onions to the pan and cook for three or four minutes until the onions begin to colour. 3. Add ginger and garlic paste and cook for one minute before adding the turmeric, red chilli powder, diced tomato and salt and cook for one minute. 4. Add the diced potatoes to the sauté pan with 150ml water, cover the pan and simmer on a low-medium heat for about eight or ten minutes (mix occasionally). 5. Add the cauliflower florets to the sauté pan with the remaining 150ml of water, cover the pan and cook for nine or ten minutes (mix occasionally, if more water is required in between and the alu gobi is drying out, add as needed). 6. When the cauliflower and potato are cooked, add the garam masala, dried fenugreek leaves and fresh coriander to the pan and cook for a final 1 or 2 minutes. 7. Garnish with finely chopped ginger juliennes and chopped coriander stalks.

The gardeners of Kew use this mulch to help acid-loving plants such as Camellias and Rhododendrons thrive in the Gardens. Visitors can bring their trees along from 26 December 2018 – 6 January 2019, 10am-3pm. Trees should be brought to the Brentford Gate, TW9 3AF, next to Kew’s Ferry Lane car park. For those in town on New Year’s Day who haven’t celebrated too hard the night before, the New Year parade is certainly set to be a spectacle. Over 10,000 participants from the UK, US and Europe entertain crowds of over 500,000 at the annual extravaganza, with floats, bands, cheerleaders and street performers, as well as a series of concerts. The route starts in Piccadilly at 12pm and moves through lower Regent Street, Pall Mall and Trafalgar Square, ending on Parliament Street. The event has a charitable focus, with each London borough entering a performance of some sort, designed to display the diversity of the city. The boroughs are competing for a cash prize of around £40,000 which they can distribute to chosen charities in their area. Since its launch, more than £1.5 million has been raised for London Charities. The parade is free to watch, but tickets are needed if you want

to attend any of the world class Festival of Music concert series. For further details visit www.lnydp.com It’s the last few days of the Votes for Women Centenary exhibition (ends 6th January) at the Museum of London, which marked a hundred years since the 1918 Act that gave some women the right to vote for the first time in UK history. Featuring iconic symbols of the struggles fought by both individuals and groups, you can see Emily Pankhurst’s hunger strike medal alongside the posters of the time. The central piece is a specially commissioned film that focuses on lesser known suffragettes as well as the contemporary relevance of the militant campaign. Visit www.museumoflondon.org.uk to find out more. The museum is free to enter daily from 10am to 6pm. Visit 150 London Wall, London EC2Y 5HN.

‘The Colour of Memory’, which begins on 23rd January. Set to be a sellout, this is the first major exhibition of Pierre Bonnard’s work in the UK since the much-loved display at the Tate 20 years ago. The idea is to allow new generations to discover Bonnard’s unconventional use of colour, while surprising those who think they already know him.Bonnard was one of the greatest colourists of the early 20th century. He preferred to work from memory, imaginatively capturing the spirit of a moment and expressing it through his unique handling of colour and innovative sense of composition. The exhibition concentrates on his work from 1912, when colour became a dominant concern, until his death in 1947. Visit www. tate.org.uk or head to Tate Modern, Bankside, SE1 9TG And finally, for those craving a week in the snowy Alps who aren’t able to escape the city, ‘Chel-ski’ could be the next best thing. From the team behind Chelsea’s hugely successful Clip n’ Climb arena next door, Chel-ski is London’s answer to the mountains - a mini, moving indoor ski slope ideal for practicing your moves and keeping in tune. It’s fully kitted out with an Alpine bar and conveniently located just off the King’s Road. Visit www. chel-ski.uk or 4 Sotheron Place, Michael Road, SW6 2E

Positively Putney has partnered with Community Clean to tidy up the Putney BID (Business Improvement District), making our neighbourhood nicer for 2019. The fortnightly clean will initially focus on cleaning back alleys, bus stops and local ‘grot spots’, but will also pressure wash Putney’s pavements to remove the dirt and grime of everyday life. Positively Putney partnered with Community Clean after a number of comments from ! local businesses expressing their unhappiness with the cleanliness of Putney’s streets. Although Wandsworth Council regularly sweep the streets, Community Clean is able to go above and beyond what the council can provide and remind business owners why Putney is such a great place to live and work. In Community Clean’s first visit in October, they focussed on pressure washing a local ‘grot spot’, the alleyway on Montserrat Road. They were also able to clean the alleyway on Disraeli Road, remove messy stickers from lamp columns and clean various sign posts around Putney. Nicola Grant from Positively Putney says: “Our partnership with Community Clean is vital if we want to keep Putney’s high street alive and encourage new businesses to Putney.” Visit www.positivelyputney. co.uk/cleaning-up-putney to find out how you can help keep Putney clean.
