Promoting your event in Ramblings is FREE I recently spent a week on an organic farm in rural Ireland, and it got me thinking about how disconnected our lives here in London are from nature. OK, so Ballymaloe Farm has 100 acres to milk their own cows and let chickens roam, and that’s not feasible in the city.

If you’re holding a charity event, fete, fair or anything of a non-commercial nature email it in by 31st May to feature in the July edition psavage@roundandabout.co.uk

ut still, there are so many little ways we can re-engage with nature, especially in June when the days are at their longest. According to recent research, 53% of Brits say being around plants when working makes them happier and positively impacts their mental health and wellbeing. Over 8th & 9th June it’s Open Garden Squares Weekend, when more than 100 of London's hidden green spaces, private gardens and community allotments open for two days. One ticket allows you to explore rooftop paradises, city centre oases and gardens of the rich and famous. Many provide guided walks, interesting talks and bike tours, as well as entertainment and food stalls during the weekend. Advance weekend tickets are £15, which allow you to go into as many as you like. For more information and to buy tickets, visit www.opensquares.org For the third year, Eel Brook Weekend will bring tons of free community fun to Eel Brook Common, in a tipi! On both 22nd & 23rd June, 12-5pm on both days. Head along to enjoy live music, food trucks and family fun including bouncy castles, face painting, and human table football.

For more details check out @eel_brook_weekend_ on Instagram, Facebook and www.eelbrookweekend.com On 7th June, Hammersmith & Fulham council will announce the winning idea for The Hammersmith Highline, following a public competition to redesign a disused viaduct parallel to King Street. Sandwiched between existing elevated railway lines, the project is inspired by New York City’s High Line (although shorter). The competition, which was open to all, is coordinated by architect group West London Link and Hammersmith BID. The scheme would improve air quality while also helping local biodiversity. All entries will be displayed in Kings Mall from 22th-30th June, with entries also beamed on to a screen in Lyric Square. Hammersmith & Fulham Artfest, 1st-9th June, reflects our diverse community. Enjoy visual arts, painting and photography across the borough, or join workshops in drawing, storytelling, plate-making, mask-making, singing and more. There's also a celebration of disabled artists titled JOY, in the Lyric Theatre Studio, as well as open-air

To find out more, visit www.hf-artsfest.com One of the best ways to help nature is by looking after our precious urban bees, by filling your window boxes, rooftops and gardens with flowers. Hardy geraniums are a bee favourite, as well as foxgloves, honeysuckle and delphiniums. Even if, like me, you have almost no outdoor space, bees love herbs such as rosemary, thyme and borage. Reward yourself by buying the sweetest jar of London honey, said to help with hay fever, in the knowledge that you’ve helped feed these bees. For information on urban beekeeping, visit www.bermondseystreetbees.co.uk Thursday, 6th June, marks the 75th anniversary since the D-Day landings, one of the most complex military operations ever undertaken, with 160,000 troops crossing the English Channel in a day. What few people know, however, is that Winston Churchill, King George VI, General Eisenhower and General Montgomery met in Hammersmith to plan this seminal moment of the Second World War. On Saturday, 8th June there will be a commemorative anniversary gathering in the gardens with military vehicles, wartime music, food and drink, a children’s obstacle course, a display of local pupils' art. The H&F schools art competition has three age groups, 9-11, 12-13 and 14-16 with a maximum entry of three in each age group per school. Entries can be paintings, drawings or models, but should be no larger than A3. Art should be delivered to the marquee in the gardens behind St Paul’s Hotel, 8-10am and collected 4-5pm. The D-Day commemorative event on 8th June is at St Paul’s Garden in Hammersmith Road, W14 0QL, 11am-5pm. All welcome. The Little Blue Door, Fulham’s sister fictional flat share to the Little Yellow Door which I so enjoyed this month (see review), is hosting an after-party for Polo in the Park Little on the weekend of the 7th of June. Expect their usual levels of debauchery, with high spirits after a day of polo watching. If a casual Sunday roast is more your thing to recover from the weekend, you’re also in luck: make friends as you tuck into third helpings of crispy roast potatoes and all the trimmings as you sit at the big long banqueting tables, then flop into one of their comfy armchairs and read the Sunday papers. It’s just like being at home, without the washing up. Visit the Little Blue Door, 871-873 Fulham Road, SW6 5HP. To book, contact justknock@thelittlebluedoor.co.uk or 07538 229 096. Q. that.”

Hello! What’s your top tip for anyone improving their home? “Make it personal! I see so many homes that are attempts to copy an interiors magazine. I get bored of

Q. You love shopping... what’s your weakness? “I love cameras. I’ve taken photos since I bought my first camera at 14 years old (a second-hand SLR Chinon from a shop in Sunderland which is still there). I now have a bit of a collection. My favourite is my Leica CL. I know there are great camera phones these days but a beautiful camera with amazing lens feels different. I don’t keep a written diary, but I take photographs and a picture says a thousand words.” Q. What’s your home in Notting Hill like? “I love my home. It’s a 1960s modernist house I’ve fully refurbished. It’s not big, but has everything I need. My garden studio has to be my favourite; it’s my escape. I’m never happier than in that space... working, reading, sketching or watching TV. It contains most of my books as well as architectural models of beautiful buildings from around the world. My studio goes some way to proving even the simplest, smallest of structures can be lifechanging.” Q. Any fave local hang-outs? “I love west London because it has such a creative buzz. Some truly amazing people live here. I’m within a short 12 | JUNE 2019

walk of Portobello Road market and Golbourne Road. Porto, the famous Portuguese café, is my favourite for a coffee and breakfast. My favourite pub is The Cow; I’ve being going there since I moved to London in 1996. It always reminds me of the pub in Cheers because everyone knows everyone and gets treats exactly the same. The Cow is an institution.” Q. What’s your favourite book, artist and film and piece of music? “Master & Margarita by Mikhaial Bulgakov. Turner’s my favourite artist. I’m a sucker for James Bond; Spectre is up there. I never thought Daniel Craig would be my favourite but he’s brilliant. Here Comes the Sun by George Harrison is simplicity and beauty personified.” Q. What are your three favourite buildings in the UK? “That’s a tough question! I have too many favourites. I think my first would be Durham cathedral. I went there for the first rime when I was eight and I couldn’t believe that something so beautiful and so big could be built over 1,000 years ago. I’m not a religious person (my only religion is that everyone on the planet should be kind to each other) but I love beautiful, peaceful spaces. Durham was the building that made me fall in love with architecture. Second would be Sir John Shane’s house in Lincoln’s-in-Fields... My third should be my own home...as your own home is the most important piece of architecture.”

Summer

of love

Sanchi Murison invites us all to find out more about Dover House Singers, Putney’s community choir which raises funds for local good causes, as well as spirits

I

t is pretty well known that singing is good for you, good for the brain, good for your health, and good for your social life. So no wonder that the Dover House Singers, Putney’s community choir is thriving under its inspirational leader Carl Speck.

There are no auditions, and the emphasis is firmly on the fun and friendly aspect – values that may account for the choir’s membership growing to more than 50 people. Members’ ages range from the mid-twenties to the over-seventies, and perhaps surprisingly, there are quite a few men these days.

The emphasis is firmly on fun and friendly

16 | JUNE 2019

So far, so traditional. What makes this choir special, according to its fans, is its outreach work into the community and its emphasis on inclusivity. The choir is regularly asked to run sing-along sessions at local dementia cafés where the focus is on songs that people may remember and can join in. The choir’s adopted local charity is RegenerateRise, a Putney based charity for older people, and over the past four years has raised close on £9,000 from concerts and carol singing.

This term the emphasis is on celebrating “the summer of love”’ with songs such as Summer Breeze, Sittin’ (on the) Dock of the Bay, He Ain’t Heavy, Son of a Preacher Man and a Beach Boys medley. Carl arranges the songs so that they can be sung in three- or four-part harmony, and records all the tracks in the hope that people will practise them at home. The summer repertoire will be performed at the summer concert on Saturday, 20th July, at St Mary’s Church in Putney. One long-standing member of the choir says: “My singing abilities are very limited, but I really enjoy the atmosphere and social element. Singing can feel very life-affirming when you’re in a big group, and Carl is always super fun. I also like going to The Pub Choir that he runs, where you just turn up, grab a drink and sing a few songs that he teaches on the night.” So, if you’re at a loose end why not give singing a go? We’re a bit short of sopranos at the moment but welcome anyone who wants to come along and try it – first session is always free. thousands pedal through London from seven different spots across the city, with participants painted with slogans and messages. It's just like Extinction Rebellion, but with fewer clothes. Visit www.wnbr.london. They’re cycling for a good cause: shocking recent reports show 50 pollution "black spots" across London breach EU annual limits on toxic air. The limit for nitrogen dioxide is an average of 40 micrograms per cubic metre of air, however this year The Strand is at 84, the City is at 80 and Oxford Street is at 60. On 8th April an Ultra-Low Emission Zone was implemented in central London with most vehicles including cars and vans required to meet new, tighter emission standards, or be liable for a daily charge. The government has committed more than £3.5 billion to tackle poor air quality.

While we’re on the theme of cycling, the wonderful team at Putney’s Rude Health Cafe are holding a charity bike ride. Setting off from the cafe on 14th June, they will cycle all the way to Amsterdam in aid for Chefs in Schools charity. Animal motifs, themes & prints can add some real personality to your home. Liz Nicholls rounds up a flock of favourites... What are yours?

ith style it really is a case of different strokes for different folks… and fans of the minimal, declutterd home aesthetic imight want to look away now.

For a few glorious seasons, animal print has spotted on fashion fans from head to toe... We love a bit of leopard print here at Round & About Towers (and not just the ladies!). The maximalist aesthetic has been a roaring success on the home front, too. A seismic shift away from the greige and modular home designs we might have seen everywhere in the Noughties and onwards, clashing prints, bold colours and tropical treats 24 | JUNE 2019

have earned their style stripes. Be assured: a few well-chosen animal and safari-themed pieces can add a lot of personality to any room, without being overwhelming. Sometimes known as the "secret railway", nestled under the A316 near Feltham, the railway is open every Sunday from March to November with trains 10.30- 4pm. Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Kempton Steam Museum housing the world’s largest working 62 feet 1,000-ton pumping engine, the railway played a vital part in helping to supply clean drinking water to London in the early 1900s. Novelist, broadcaster and Newsnight presenter Kirsty Wark will host a one-off supper club and talk, chatting about her passion for plants, childhood gardening memories and how a love of the outdoors inspired her new novel The House by the Loch. FOOD

Knock knock Jessica Elphinstone invites herself to an eclectic dinner party in Notting Hill at Little Yellow Door, the sister of the Little Blue Door in Fulham

Y

ou know those weekends when your cool, bohemian friends in Notting Hill invite you round for a raucous dinner party in their gloriously chaotic house, ending at 2am with people dancing on tables swigging Bollinger and neighbours calling the police? The sort of house party where glamorous hipsters rub shoulders with start-up founders, and there’s a random parrot swearing in the corner..? Well, this never actually happens to me, but it’s the inspiration for The Little Yellow Door, a fictional flatshare created for those moments when a hedonistic party doesn’t present itself spontaneously.

Dinner is a bit like immersive theatre

Dweeby Dan and I have spent the afternoon soaking up culture at the V&A, and we turn up late to the house party (aka our dinner reservation). The residential street is silent, but one of the “flatmates” ushers us through the eponymous yellow door like an old friend. True to promise, it’s kitted out exactly like a shabby yet charming flat, shared by a bunch of party animals. Celebrations are in full swing, and downstairs it sounds like there’s a rave going on already.

We sit at the bar, ignoring the other party guests, and order cocktails. I try Y Tu Mama Tambien, 26 | JUNE 2019

clearly inspired by one flatmate’s gap yah, a potent mix of tequila, mezcal, agave and rosemary. There’s another menu, S**t Hot Tipples; naturally we buy into this, and surreptitiously enjoy a Black Beard made with Mount Gay rum, no doubt from their recent holiday to Barbados. The food, as you’d hope, is charmingly ’70s dinner party fare, with Melba toast, chocolate fondant and fancy little crudites served in chintzy metal martini glasses. Thankfully, it’s also much better than the burnt shepherd’s pie that would realistically be rustled up by the sort of reprobate who would live here. The peanut glazed pork belly bao buns were a particular triumph, and a chance for me to show off about my limited knowledge of Taiwanese food. Dinner at The Little Yellow Door is a bit like taking part in immersive theatre, perhaps stepping into a slightly more ramshackle Breakfast at Tiffany’s, with the added bonus of hearty food and great cocktails. They have friends in Fulham too – just look for The Little Blue Door and you’ll find it. ● For Little Blue Door, contact 07538 229 096 or visit www.thelittlebluedoor.co.uk and Little Yellow Door, 6-8 All Saints Road, W11 1HH, 07801 267854 and www.thelittleyellowdoor.com
