onnecting dog owners with trusted local people who’d love to look after their dog, whether for walks in the park, overnight stays or holidays, the initiative is free to use for borrowers (dog owners pay a small annual fee). It could help fill the doggy hole in your life, get you out in the spring sunshine and help out dog owners at the same time. Apparently, the most popular breeds in Fulham are Labradors, chihuahuas, cocker spaniels and their closely related hybrid; cockapoos. For more information visit www.borrowmydoggy.com or call 020 3826 8628. If you prefer less domesticated animals, it’s also the perfect time of year to visit one of London’s city farms; it’s amazing what you can find in this city! One the largest farms in London, Mudchute Park and Farm (accessed by the DLR) covers 32 acres in the Isle of Dogs, and includes an equestrian centre, petting zoo and duck pond. You may also be surprised to find Vauxhall City Farm just off the busy main Vauxhall junction (I certainly was!), home to more than 100 animals including rare-breed goats, alpacas, horses, pigs and a hedgehog. The wholesome set-up has a community allotment, which grows plants used as dyes

for the spinning classes on the farm. Spitalfields is also an unlikely candidate for a city farm just moments from Brick Lane and Shoreditch, with donkeys, goats and pick-yourown veg. Being London, most of these have lovely cafés to remind you you’re not really in the countryside. Fulham and Hammersmith’s Foodbank is London’s busiest, and they need our help to meet demand. Over the last two years, the council reports the number of families fed by the H&F foodbank has more than doubled, and essential supplies are running low, with a particular need for tinned fruit and veg, UHT milk, tinned meat and fish, biscuits, spreads and loo roll. Many local supermarkets have donation points, including Sainsbury’s in Fulham Broadway and Fulham Wharf and Waitrose on North End Road.

The historic and hugely popular Oxford Cambridge boat race takes place in April, but on 16th March participants can stroll down to the river to support The Women’s Eights Head of the River Race - the largest women’s rowing race in the world. Founded in the 1930s

with five crews participating, the event now has about 2,880 women racing and up to 320 crews. What makes it even more special is that it is the only race in the UK where novices can compete in the same race as Olympic champions, and as it such attracts a wide range of rowers from clubs and universities. The races start at 9.45am. The best views of the race are generally either from Hammersmith Bridge or along Putney Embankment given the proximity to restaurants and pubs. tolerance” crackdown. The increased fine is a major step to helping the council in its ambition of becoming the greenest borough in Britain. These fines have been used alongside the council’s extensive CCTV network to catch people who dump their waste on our streets. I write this with smugness as, having lived in Fulham since 2016 I’ve finally started to recycle like a normal, functioning adult. For hilarious updates on the chase of daylight rubbish dumpers caught on CCTV, visit www.lbhf.gov.uk On a similar note, corporate recycling and sustainability organisation First Mile has shared some horrifying stats about air pollution in London, which surpassed the annual quota within a matter of days. Despite Mayor Sadiq Khan pledging to make the quality of London air better, with a range of progressive schemes and city-wide restrictions, Londoners are encouraged to wake up to these issues personally if they want to implement change. According to research, First Mile claims UK air pollution could cause 36,000 deaths a year. Recycling, walking or cycling to work, and cutting down on meat are three ways to reduce your carbon footprint. To find out more or sign your office up, visit www.thefirstmile.co.uk

Liz Nicholls goes undercover to help you create your dream bedroom and get a good night’s sleep in National Bed Month.

C

reating the perfect boudoir is a labour of love. And this month is the perfect time to lavish love on your bedroom, and yourself, to get a better kip...

Delightfully for fans of 1970s decor such as myself, one of the hot trends of the year is a celebration of retro shapes, especially the lozenge, with glitz points ramped up even higher if it’s in velvet. For a sumptuous example, check out Danetti ‘s Rene king size bed in navy blue (pictured above right) or Living It Up’s Harmonia platform bed in emerald green (above). If you want to go “full princess” (I mean, who doesn’t?!), also check out the chic hotel-worthy beds and accessories from French Bedroom Company, including the plushious throw (jewel-hued velvet again). See our competitions page, too! 8 | R&A Fulham

March is National Bed Month when bed brands, including many based in Chelsea’s buzzing design quarter, are offering advice and deals on new beds and bedding, to encourage us all to sleep more soundly and deeply. Check out And So To Bed, Sweetpea & Willow, Original Bed Company, Button & Spring, Button & Sprung, Feather & Black, Darlings of Chelsea and Made. For all you fellow insomniacs out there, Matthew Walker’s Why We Sleep: The New Science of Sleep and Dreams is well worth a read. The bestselling author’s latest tome is helping debunk unhelpful sleep habits. Notably; keeping a regular bedtime routine (including evening meditation if possible, Calm and Headspace apps are well worth checking out) and avoiding caffeinated drinks after 12noon and naps after 1pm. Don’t underestimate the power of a dark, cosy bedroom interior to lull your body into healthy circadian rhythms – this encourages REM-rich sleep to replenish energy levels. As you can see from the range of bedroom inspo pictures here, dark and moody colours are hugely on-trend at the moment. I’ve gone for Farrow & Ball’s Inchyra Blue on my boudoir walls, set off with a soft Middleton Pink on the ceiling and copper accents. It’s not as mad as it sounds – the effect is gentleman’s-club-meets hotel getaway. I can’t recommend a bold, dark hue highly enough – check out Annie Sloan’s new range. Switching off electronic devices, especially bluelight emitters, is a must for a good sleep, as is avoiding clocks or looking at the time during a wakeful night. If our brains are over-saturated with artificial light, this disrupts the release of melatonin, so echew overhead lights in favour of lamps; we love the infinity star (£9.99) and more by Lights4Fun and dimmable options. www.roundandabout.co.uk

Research shows, too, that most of us set our bedroom temperature too high to help you drop off soundly –18C is ideal for most people. Finally, don’t underestimate the power of great bedding to help you get a good kip! Senso-Rex, the company behind www.gravityblankets. co.uk, was founded in 2013 and its products have recently been winning rave reviews for easing stress and anxiety. State-of-the-art gravity blankets are tailored to your height and body weight to provide the sensation of being hugged or embraced and ensure a dreamy sleep. Under the Bridge

A great night of live music is on the bill at Chelsea Blues, Rhythm & Rock Festival.

E

njoy a night of bluesy rock action Under the Bridge at this Fulham Road festival with leading musicians, many of whom have learned their craft from the best. Brought to you by one of the leading blues and rock organisers in the country, Solid Entertainment, Chelsea Blues Festival is packed full of blues, as you might expect, rhythm and rock – pretty much as it says on the tin. Among the acts on stage will be Jethro Tull’s Martin Barre and his band. Martin has been the guitarist of Jethro Tull for 43 years. His sound and playing have been a major factor in their success with album sales exceeding 60 million; the band are a key part of rock history.

10 | R&A Fulham

As well as several Jethro Tull albums, Martin has worked with legends of the music industry such as Paul McCartney, Phil Collins and Gary Moore and shared a stage with Jimi Hendrix and Fleetwood Mac. Martin has put together a band to play music from Tull’s catalogue which includes musicians from a similar background.

Also on the bill are the Stevie Nimmo Trio; Stevie is one half of Scotland’s Nimmo Brothers with his roots firmly in the blues and er, roots world. JFK Blue are a stylish blues/rock band and have been described as having a Southern rock feel, and you’d imagine that’s the kind of vibe Bourbon Street Revival are channelling too mixing contemporary with rare and well-loved classics. The line-up is completed by Deep Sea Blue who pride themselves on being a “new wave of indie blues”. More acts are set to be announced but whoever else joins the bill it sounds as if it’s a night not to be missed on Saturday, 30th March, at Under the Bridge, SW6 1HS. Tickets £29. routes providing better, safer cycling facilities combined with improvements for pedestrians. The routes being improved include a fully segregated safer cycle pathway across the borough from Chiswick, down King Street and Hammersmith Road and all the way to Kensington. Work is scheduled to begin later this year. This will be boosted by improvements to the cycle highway along the A4 to make it ideal for faster and experienced commuting riders.

Alternatively, have you ever thought about using the river boat for your daily commute? If so, you can save 20% on all weekly and monthly season tickets bought before Saturday, 3rd March with MBNA Thames Clippers, London’s leading River Bus service. The offer also applies to existing paper season ticket holders converting to the app. Rather than having your face under someone’s sweaty armpit on the tube, commuters can in theory enjoy the benefits of a comfortable seat in the cosy cabin, a coffee (or post-work tipple) from the fully licensed bar, and a spot of fresh air from the outside deck as you hop on from one of 22 piers across the capital. The service starts in Putney, and travels directly to key central London locations. Passengers will save up to £40.26 on a monthly pass covering All Zones, paying £161.04 (normally costing £201.30). Shepherd picks up on feminist topics within her sculpture, breaking boundaries as the first artist to exhibit a sculpture of a woman in the National Maritime museum. Inspired by her work with LGBT groups, including Girls Guides, Action Refugees in Lewisham and Mermaid, a group of gender diverse and transgender children. CJA Educational Consultancy offers advice to parents in south-west London on both independent and local schools and nurseries, exam processes and entry requirements.

T

his is a personalised service with your child’s best interests in mind.

Chloe Abbott, a teacher of English, Business English and qualified primary teacher, has been tutoring and supporting children and families through London schools systems and exam procedures for years. She is a mother of two children and lives in Battersea, which has helped her to understand, on a personal level, the stress, worry and confusion the London school system can cause. Over the past few years, Chloe has built up a team of professionals, who can help find the best schools and ensure children can confidently

sit entrance exams for their school of choice. Chloe is happy to discuss nursery through to sixth form. This is a very caring and personalised service and – as testimonials show – parents and children have benefitted hugely from contacting CJA Educational Consultancy.

Chloe or a member of the team will come to meet you and your family and will discuss the your options and possibilities. Further to this, it may be that you will need to visit nurseries or schools, meet with heads or complete the entry forms and procedures. In some instances, your child may complete an assessment to help find the best fit and possible booster sessions in maths, English or reasoning arranged to help them reach their full potential in exam or entrance tests. CJA Educational Consultancy also offers interview preparation and practice. ● Please contact Chloe Abbott on 07738238273 or email info@ cjaeducationalconsultancy.com

star Q&A

Life story Multi-award-winning author Julia Donaldson tells us about her life & work as the stage adaptation of Zog goes on tour across the UK from this month onwards.

Q.

You’ve written almost 200 books – where do you get your ideas? “It varies, but I always develop the storyline fully in my head before I start writing. I think you read some books and you can tell people have made it up as they go along. But I always think, you wouldn’t start telling a joke if you didn’t know what the punchline was.” Q. Where did the idea for Zog the dragon come from? “My editor said ‘it would be lovely to have a story about a dragon’, so I started thinking and the name ‘Madam Dragon’ came into my head, which had a nice sound. My husband Malcolm, who is a doctor, also had some input. I knew Zog would keep meeting the Princess, and originally I was going to have them Stories help play together and toast marshmallows. you have Malcolm said ‘that’s a bit soppy, couldn’t it be something with a bit more oomph?’ And aspirations then I came up with the doctor angle.”

Q. Why do animals feature so strongly in your books? “It’s often used as a convention – like in Aesop’s Fables; the animals aren’t really animals, they represent a quality or a characteristic. I also think it would be far more boring for the reader or listener, if Mouse in The Gruffalo was just a small but clever person, or the Gruffalo himself was a big, scary but rather stupid person. I think you need animals to represent the qualities.” 14 | R&A Fulham

Q. Do you try to give your books a happy ending? “I often think about the role of storytelling for young people. In life, not everything does have a happy ending – but I think to grow up with stories helps you have aspirations, even if life doesn’t turn out like that. Even as grown-ups, we know there’s a lot of sadness, but if we didn’t have those stories, aspirations and a sense of what’s ideal, life would be harder to live.” Q. What’s it like seeing an illustrator’s version of your characters? “I always say it’s like going on holiday – you’ve got an idea of how it’s going to be, and then it’s always different. But you just forget what was in your head before. I’m usually not surprised when I see Axel’s interpretation.” Q. What do you feel a theatre trip gives young children? “I remember going to see The Nutcracker as a child and I found it magical. I can still remember how I felt when the curtain went up. I suppose in a way it’s the same thing that a book gives you, in that while you’re reading or watching, you believe in a different reality. Even very young ones can just be transfixed by theatre.” ● Zog plays at various venues including Wycombe Swan, Guildford’s G Live and Oxford Playhouse between now and summer; visit www.ZogLive. com. We have a family ticket to be won, too – please visit www.roundandabout.co.uk to enter. March 2019

food

Turning Japanese Jessica Elphinstone is delighted – by both the saintly and sinful – at Kurobuta.

I

love the way people describe the King’s Road. “Half way up it, just by that giant clock that ticks backwards,” someone will say. Or “halfway down, near Waterstones.” Or else “by The Bluebird”, which doesn’t seem to need a geographical tag at all. Depending on whether you start at Sloane Square or near Putney Bridge, your perspective is hugely warped. Anyway, somewhere along it and directly adjacent to JuJu – famously Prince Harry’s nightclub of choice back in his party days – you may have noticed Kurobuta.

Kurobuta seems to be on to a winning formula

It’s a trendy, lively Japanese “izakaya” – roughly translated as a post-work drinking spot with a fun young crowd; something akin to a pub or a tapas bar. Inside, well-dressed west Londoners are beginning their Friday night revelry with glasses of sparking yuzu sake and platters of tuna maki “roulette”, where one sushi roll is viciously spicy and needs to be washed down with another shot of sake. Kurobuta is not a stickler for authenticity, but the food is nevertheless very good. Miso-baked aubergine with candied walnuts is right up my street, and the pickled seaweed salad

16 | R&A Fulham

is crunchy and nourishing. Soft shell crab, salmon and spicy tuna maki rolls are all many steps superior to Itsu, and portion sizes are good. Our platter of yellowtail sashimi is excellent quality too, though strangely garnished with bright green caviar. Surprisingly for such a sushi devotee, it’s the Singapore fried chicken with mouth-wateringly tangy pickled cucumber and kimchi mayo steal the show. So often done wrong, the chicken was succulent and flavoursome, the batter perfectly crunchy. From the “junk food” section, which is apparently at the heart of the izakaya concept, our vivacious waitress Carmen encourages us to order a “sashimi pizza”. This conjures up revolting images of fusion sacrilege at its worst, but is actually a real treat, served on delicate crispbread without mozzarella or tomato in sight. The light-hearted restaurant started out as a pop-up, and seems to be on to a winning formula: they’ve got Jarr kombucha and raw fish for the health conscious, cocktails and signature sushi for the party goers, and Wagyu sliders and sticky barbecue pork ribs for the sheer indulgent. ● Kurobuta, 312 King’s Road, Chelsea, SW3 5HU. www.kurobuta-london.com March 2019

Hair removal for good Laser hair removal is a great investment to make for summer.

How about if you could get those 72 days back and remove unwanted hair permanently? Thanks to Skinsmiths, the answer comes in the form of laser hair removal. The treatment offered at the clinics across London and Surrey uses controlled pulses of light to prevent future hair growth at the source – but as with most advanced beauty treatments, it is an investment. Laser hair removal brings lasting results, once done there’s no need

to make return appointments or buy razors or creams to remove the unwanted hair. And you’ll save in the long term as you won’t need to keep having repeat treatments or buy replacement tools and products, not to mention the time you’ll get back in your busy life too. The treatment offered by Skinsmiths can also deal with ingrown hairs, which can be a side effect of waxing and shaving. Laser hair removal penetrates down to the follicle to prevent future hair growth and future ingrown hairs. The laser hair removal plan at Skinsmiths, Freedom, will give you just that – freedom to enjoy summer without having to worry about

Everything in its place or life in chaos? Putney’s Victoria Nicholson tells Liz Nicholls how she discovered the joy of decluttering and helping others achieve the same...

S

uch is the chaos of my life that I’m both jealous of and intrigued by serenely organised people. So, after confessing my messy shame to Victoria Nicholson, founder of My Wardrobe Zen, I’m surprised to learn we have much in common... “Growing up and as an adult I was really untidy,” she says. “I used my creative mind as an excuse and that there was much more to life than something as mundane as tidying. I’ve always been messy. It’s not that I didn’t want to be tidy; I dreamed of neat shelves and clean stationery... but no matter how much I tried, my mess was always shifted from one area to another. “It wasn’t until the death of my parents Email when I had my ‘Eureka’ moment. When victoria@ sorting through my parents’ belongings mywardrobe (there was a lot, in fact so much that we ended up on two episodes of zen.co.uk Storage Hoarders), I had to get through everything in a short space of time so I scanned for items that I wanted to keep or that my sister would want. Everything else went in a big van destined for a women’s refuge centre.” You might have seen the Netflix programme and heard of Marie Kondo’s bestselling book The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying about identifying which items in your home truly “spark joy” and 18 | R&A Fulham

eliminating the rest. Victoria, a mum of one who has a background in hotel management and as an office PA, read it in 2015. “It resonated,” she says. “I’d tried traditional decluttering but it was always a quick fix and nothing stayed tidy.” The KonMari™ method from Japan boasts a 0% relapse rate and has a positive, nurturing approach that Victoria wanted to share. Now a certified KonMari™ consultant and APDO member, she offers local residents a free 20-minute consultation. “By having a place for everything, tidying up daily is much quicker and by keeping ‘like with like’ it’s easier to find things. It’s important if you’re sharing a home to also let them know where everything is and store items logically. When I completed my tidying marathon I had clarity. My husband asked me to help him too and loves the results – he says it’s like looking at a nice shop display every morning. It was amazing to meet Marie [pictured] at the London KonMari seminar last year. I knew she was petite but not until she glided in did I appreciate how delicate she is. Yet she commands a huge presence that exudes inner strength. I’ve yet to be shocked by a client’s mess – we all lead busy lives and I know how easy it is for things to get out of hand. In some cases fear of letting go of the past or fear of the future or change has an impact on our environment.” March 2019

You may or may not have noticed, but more than 7,500 street lamps in Fulham and Hammersmith have been replaced with innovative, environmentally friendly LED lights. The new LED lights use half the energy of traditional street lamps, resulting in a spectacular 58% drop in energy consumption in the borough. eel there’s a budding Eric Clapton or Charlie Watts just trying to get out..? Or maybe you just want to give your guitar or drumming skills an outing? This is the perfect opportunity to give it a go… Share in the joy of music on Learn to Play Day as venues all over the country encourage thousands to pick up and play a musical instrument. Whether you’ve never played before or once did as a child this is your chance to have a go for free.

The event has been running for eight years and in that time music shops, teachers, venues and schools have given tens of thousands of free lessons, including 10,000 last year alone.

It’s a pleasure to share the joy of music

Learn to Play Day (or two days to be precise) is run by charity Music For All and supported by a host of big names including Jools Holland, patron of the Music For All charity.

“I’m delighted to lend my support to National Learn to Play Day on March 23rd and 24th,” says Jools. “It’s a pleasure to share the joy of music and this special day allows thousands to get involved as venues all over the country offer music lessons for free.” Jazz star Jamie Cullum is another supporting the 22 | R&A Fulham

event. He says: “National Learn to Play Day gives everyone a chance to play an instrument, even if they’ve never played before. This wonderful day introduces thousands to the magic of music making, and often reunites people with a lost passion for playing. Get involved and perhaps discover a skill you thought you didn’t have.” Spreading the joy of playing an instrument is the key element of the two days, as Music For All CEO Paul McManus explains... “While we all may have different tastes and preferred genres, there is no doubt that music is something that is universally loved around the world. Our Learn to Play Day events are all about spreading the joy of playing and inspiring those of all ages to take up something that will not only have health benefits for the future, but that also brings so many people together.” Other Music For All ambassadors include Rick Astley, Aled Jones and Gareth Malone and who knows this could be your first foray into following in their footsteps! Staff helped children write letters to Santa, laid on plenty of festive food and organised Christmas parties – including a winter wonderland themed one, complete with a Snow Queen. And thanks to supporters, children and young people had lots of gifts to unwrap. St Christopher’s are looking for volunteers to help young people grow in confidence and broaden their prospects. isiting the Roman temple at Bloomberg’s European HQ, near Bank, seemed a good way to pass a spare hour. I booked free tickets online and turned up at the allotted time. In the 3rd century the site became home to worshippers of the god Mithras. Archaeologists unearthed the Mithraeum in 1954, then it was poorly reconstructed at Temple Court. Now the ruins are close to their original position, below modern street level, and re-opened in November 2017. A cabinet of artefacts dug up from the site fills a wall of the ground floor, and visitors can find out about each of the 600 items using a tablet provided.

© PAYE Conservation

Downstairs, there’s an opportunity to learn about the Mithraic cult by exploring interactive boards, while waiting to enter the dark room that contains the temple. Little is left of the building beyond the lower section, but light and sound effects evoke an atmospheric impression of the sacred space and its mysterious rites.

To see sculptures of Mithras’ head and a bull slaying scene from the Mithraeum, head to the Museum of London – its exhibits include ancient objects discovered around the city. Parts of the Roman walls remain near the museum and the Tower of London. And underneath Guildhall Art Gallery lies an almost 2,000-year-old amphitheatre, London’s answer to the Colosseum. All Hallows by the Tower and St Bride’s churches also have Roman remnants in their crypts. ● All these places are free to visit and open daily (London Mithraeum is closed on Mondays). Look out for open days at other Roman sites, too. www.cityoflondon.gov.uk/thingsto-do/visit-the-city/attractions

opular in the 1970s and ’80s, homity pies were often seen as somewhat worthy – leathery, unappetising with a smug crust. But we thought this pie deserved a second look. This recipe is the grandson of those early pies and – we bashfully believe – a great improvement. We’ve cut down on the potatoes to make it less heavy and added some broccoli and other root veg – although you can vary these as you like. Celeriac and swede would also work well. A great veggie dish that can be enjoyed by all.
