Come what May

Hello everyone and welcome to our May edition of Round & About

S

o, another month has fluttered by since our 25th anniversary April edition. We’d like to thank you all for your kind birthday wishes! I think it’s fair to say that there’s been a lot of tension in the air over the past few weeks, which is perhaps inevitable given the Parliamentary pantomime. Hopefully this month it’s time to wake up and smell the blossom – and there’s no one like Mother Nature to cheer you up. On Sunday, 5th May, it’s International Dawn Chorus Day. I’m an earlybird at the best of times but I’ll be up with the lark to enjoy this – download the Radio 4 podcast and get in touch with your local wildlife trust whose volunteers have lots of events to have you warbling...

Family comes in many shapes and sizes and we’re pleased to celebrate the amazing work of foster carers. Visit www.roundandabout.co.uk to read more inspiring Foster Care Fortnight stories and join the conversation @randamag #changeafuture For further proof that there is fun on the horizon, festival season kicks off this month and we hope you get

those wellies on to get stuck into some of the great highlights this summer. Visit our website for more fabulous festival fun including interviews with Erasure’s Andy Bell, Madness and many more, and watch this space for competitions. Our website and social media platforms are extra avenues through which to tell us more about what you’d like to see in this, your local magazine. I’m excited to share with you that Round & About has been shortlisted in the British Media Awards in the Regional Editorial Content, Regional Media Brand and Commercial Team of the Year categories. It takes a lot of work to create these magazines, which are delivered to more than 562,000 homes every month. We thank you for your support!

Now the weather's nicer, there’s no reason not to get out and about and enjoy Fulham’s lovely parks. My resolution this month is to take part in a park run – one of the 5k fun runs that take place across the country. Fulham Palace holds a park run every Saturday morning at 9am. It’s totally free to join, but you need to register to be timed and track your improvement week on week. People of all ages and abilities get involved. Fulham Palace parkrun is entirely organised by volunteers; email fulhampalacehelpers@ parkrun.com or visit www.parkrun.org.uk/fulhampalace

Chelsea Physic Garden at 66 Royal Hospital Road, is the best place for a peaceful stroll among the flowers on a sunny day, and it’s never more beautiful than in May. If you’re a keen gardener, sign up to one of their hugely popular monthly "behind the scenes" tours with the head gardener, when you’ll get to explore areas of the garden not usually open to the public and find out more about the work involved to manage a botanical collection. You can also book ahead for the 6th June, 4th July or 1st August, all at 11.30am. For children aged 11 to 16, there’s also an Introduction to Plant Perfumes, hosted by the Organic Pharmacy to bring the world of plant perfumes to life for young ones. This costs £15 and takes place on 28th May from 10.30am – 2.30pm. To find out more, visit www.chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk or email enquiries@ chelseaphysicgarden.co.uk or call 020 7352 5646.

Almost 52,000 daffodil bulbs were planted in Fulham and Hammersmith’s parks last year, amid a quest to quest to become the greenest borough in Britain. The daffodils will flower annually, while plans to plant trees will provide greenery, and increase local biodiversity. The Fulham Society have planted two Fulham Oaks and

Here’s some local tittle-tattle: Fulham Town Hall has been bought for about £10 million after standing empty for seven years, and is set for redevelopment as a luxury hotel. It was recently announced the Grade II listed building has been bought, with plans to turn it into a hotel with restaurants, an event space and spa. The Victorian building was originally put on the market in 2011 by the then Conservative administration at H&F Council alongside other "under-used" council buildings sold to reduce the council's debts. At the time the council said it could no longer afford to maintain the town hall, built in 1888.

R A M B L IN G S Residents of West Kensington and Gibbs Green Estates (dubbed The People’s Estates) off North End Road say they and their homes are being "held hostage" by Earls Court developer Capital and Counties, or Capco. The residents are accusing the company of demanding planning permission to build thousands of extra new homes in return for releasing their estates back to Hammersmith & Fulham Council, in what has been a seven-year dispute. The two estates, which are home to 2,000 people, were sold to Capco in 2012 for £110 million by the then Conservativerun H council, and were scheduled for demolition as part of the vast Earls Court development. You can follow the dispute from the point of view of residents on their blog www.westkengibbsgreen.wordpress.com Veteran housing charity Stoll will host their next drop-in session on Wednesday, 8th May, at Sir Oswald Stoll Mansions in Fulham. S TAR Q&A

Dream girl Liz Nicholls asks soul singer Gabrielle (AKA Louisa Gabrielle Bobb) about life and work ahead of her performance at Blenheim Palace on Thursday, 20th June.

Q.

Hello! How do you feel about turning 50 this year? “I can’t wait! To reach 50 is exciting, a real celebration. I’m embracing getting older – some people sadly don’t even make it to 50 so I can only be thankful I’m still here, loving life.” Q. Are you sick of being asked about your ptosis, which is why you cover your eye? “Not really. After 25 years I still get asked about it so I have to accept I always will. I don’t mind explaining why I cover my eye, it’s personal choice and how I feel comfortable. Each to their own I say!” Q. Are you super-healthy and how do you relax? “I’m so not healthy, which isn’t good. I love Haribo and all things sweet. When I’m relaxing I love a good box set on Netflix or a sci-fi novel.” Q. What’s the greatest lesson motherhood has taught you? “That you don’t stop being a taxi.” Q. How do you feel about the critical acclaim Under My Skin has earned? “The way my new album’s been received has been phenomenal. When you write songs and haven’t released new music in a while you don’t know if you still can. I made an album I love and am proud of so people telling me they love it too is an amazing feeling. I can’t wait to perform songs old and new at Nocturne Live.” Q. What advice would you give to any budding musicians? “Stay true to yourself, do what makes you happy and follow your instincts.” Q. Are there any rising stars you think deserve 10 | MAY 2019

to be huge? “I think Lady Leshur is amazing and I’m sure will be a huge star very soon.” Q. What format do you most like to listen to music on? “I still buy CDs, mainly in the supermarket. I like physical copies, I never stream anything, I’m old-fashioned like that. My daughter has a record player and I actually loved listening to my new album on it as it came out in vinyl. It’s lovely to hold and play, I should get more really.” Q. What’s your favourite live show so far? “It has to be performing for Nelson Mandela at the Brighton Centre in 2000. He told me afterwards he wanted to get up and dance. I’ll never forget that and will harp on about it forever!” Q. What’s on your horizon? “I’d love to go to Nashville to write songs, I’ve done elements of country before in my music but to actually go there and be in the history of the place would be amazing, one of my ambitions for sure.” Q. Who is your dream party guest? “George Michael, I loved him growing up as an artist and think he was amazing. He sent me flowers and champagne when Rise went to number 1 and I never got to say thank you. I’d like to hang out.” Q. What would you wish for if you had the power? “I know it’s obvious but how can I not say peace?” ● Gabrielle will perform at Blenheim Palace’s Nocturne Live series, 20th – 23rd June, alongside Gladys Knight and Disco Classical plus Sister Sledge ft Kathy Sledge. www.nocturnelive.com

Brook beauty Jessica Elphinstone discovers Fulham’s missing ingredient – Brook House

C

ounting Prince Harry among your mates puts you in good stead for opening a pub in SW6. Brook House opened on the New King’s Road to much excitement this spring, the latest venture from the ex-owners of The Sands End, The Brown Cow and The Cross Keys – three of Chelsea and Fulham’s most well-heeled watering holes. Not so much a pub as a bouji brasserie, Brook House is exactly the place you dream of coming for sophisticated dinners when you move to Fulham, but just never find. Patches of floral wallpaper are already faded, and chirpy It’s not so much Fulhamites laugh and drink as if they’ve coming here all their lives. On the a pub as a bouji been evening we visit it’s heaving; they’ve already turned 50 people away on the door. brasserie

Fortunately, Brook House happens to deserve the hype. There’s a slight hint of old-school elitism in the atmosphere, and yet the menu is surprisingly egalitarian. As our waiter Kyle explains, there’s something for every occasion: you can dive in with half a dozen oysters if you fancy splashing the cash, or enjoy a chicken & ham pie and chips (albeit Aspen fries, topped with pecorino and truffle) if you’re after a hearty mid-week supper. 14 | MAY 2019

My friend Helena takes the middle road – relatively speaking – and orders herself a gloopy burrata with smoky, honey-glazed baby carrots to start off with. I’m less restrained with my choice of steak tartare, topped with a quail’s egg and served with crunchy little bits of crostini. Both are top-notch, and the mains are technically brilliant without being showy – roast cod on creamed potato and a crab salad both hit the spot. The desserts, created by talented pastry chef Olivia Hudson, are in a whole different league. My rhubarb and custard, which I read to be a safe and seasonal pub classic, turns out to be a sensational aerated custard within a brandy snap ring, with tangy chargrilled rhubarb and homemade sorbet. Helena’s passionfruit and hazelnut opera is equally stunning, and we agree they’re better than many Michelin-starred puds we’ve tried. Brook House offers a new dining experience to the Fulham and Putney crowd. It’s glitzy yet rustic, and it’s perfectly suited to this little patch of London. ● Brook House, 65 New King’s Road, Fulham, SW6 4SG. Visit www.brookhousefulham.com or call 0207 371 5283 to book. Whether your green fingers can make anything flourish or you only have to look at a plant to see it off, this event from 21st to 25th May, has so many aspects to enjoy and marvel at. Internationally renowned designers and worldclass exhibits vying to win RHS Gold medals and the coveted Best Show Garden will greet you round every corner with a few surprises too. One garden that is sure to attract a great deal of attention is the RHS Back to Nature garden designed by The Duchess of Cambridge with Andree Davies and Adam White. With the emphasis firmly on the family and inspired by childhood memories, the woodland garden offers a place to play, learn and discover and as part of the RHS’s partnership with NHS England is promoting the physical and emotional benefits of gardening and being outdoors. Among the highlights (although I’m not sure how you pick) are a garden inspired by a rock formation on an Australian beach for show sponsor M&G 18 | MAY 2019

Investments and Welcome to Yorkshire which consists of a towpath alongside a canal lock. Artisan Gardens are making a welcome return with smaller spaces offering thought-provoking designs that tell a story such as The Donkey Sanctuary: Donkeys Matter and The High Maintenance Garden for Motor Neurone Disease Association. The Chelsea Flower Show is also heralding the health and wellbeing benefits of green spaces and gardening for both people and the environment. The centrepiece of the show is the Great Pavilion which houses more than 80 exhibitors. A first for this year is a fully-interactive and walk-through garden, created by Tom Dixon and sponsored by IKEA, showcasing sustainable, affordable and forward-thinking solutions to growing food at home and in the community. After you’ve walked round and feasted on all that and much, much more, there’s a wealth of food and drink options including Jardin Blanc, an innovative dining experience from award-winning Oxfordshire chef Raymond Blanc as well as afternoon tea at The Drawing Room from The Dorchester. For more information about all the gardens and to book tickets, please visit www.rhs.org.uk

Whatever your age, taste or background there are a whole host of festivals to get your musical juices flowing, writes Liz Nicholls

estival season is upon us – which is great news for us here at Round & About (we’re big fans of a bash). Perhaps you are one of the supremely dedicated / lucky few to have bagged yourself a Glastonbury ticket..? Yes the Mother Of All Festivals is back at the end of June but if, like me, you’ll be enjoying it from the comfort of your sofa there are loads more to get fully immersed in... “I’ve been going to festivals with my wife and festival buddy Josie since the early ’90s and made some halcyon trips to Glastonbury and Reading,” Rob de Bank, Bestival curator tells me. “I’ve slept in a collapsed tent partially underwater, canoed down a Glastonbury thoroughfare, got emotional watching Stevie Wonder and Elton John at Bestival and tried Fuji Rocks in Japan and Coachella in the American desert for a change... but the festival I’ll always come back to is our very own Camp Bestival. We created the show for our kids and their kids and future generations so it’s very close to our heart but it’s also so much fun and the ultimate way to have some fantastic family time away from screens and technology. I can’t wait to see Chic, Annie Mac and The Human League here this year.”

This summer’s dance-deluxe Camp Bestival at Dorset’s Lulworth Castle, 25th to 28th July, has a heroes and superheroes theme and also offers bangers in the form of Jess Glynne, Sister Sledge, Goldie and others including Omid Djalili and Mr Motivator. We could all use a little more mindfulness in our hectic lives, and while it’s hard to set aside the time, those who are busiest often need it most. Putney Wellbeing Friends – a volunteer group of trained mental health practitioners – will run a free one-off group session on Mindfulness. This will take place on Wednesday, 15th May, 6.30-7.30pm in Putney Library, Disraeli Rd, SW15 2DR. Putney Wellbeing Friends also run an advice and listening service. If you are feeling down, depressed or anxious, pop in to see them in the library every Wednesday, 6-8pm. Over a quarter (26%) of five-year-olds in London suffer from tooth decay, which is higher than the national average. Poor dental health also has knock-on effects on children’s development and mental health. It can impact a child’s ability to sleep, eat, speak, play and socialise with other children. Bad dental health is unfairly spread around London too; a child in Bexley has much better teeth than one in Brent. London Assembly Health Committee have published full findings on london.gov.uk/assembly Following the 100th anniversary of when women first voted, the London Assembly have conducted a campaign to redress the gender balance of London’s Blue Plaques. The statistics were shocking: of the 944 Blue Plaques – only 132 recognise the achievements of women,

meaning only 14 per cent of the capital’s Blue Plaques honour women. Londoners have come forward to suggest 100 women who deserve the recognition of a Blue Plaque. Women nominated who do not have a Blue Plaque include suffragette and activist Emily Davidson, Princess Diana, and Claudia Jones, an equal rights campaigner and Caribbean Carnival organiser. Who do you think deserves a blue plaque? To find out more or even propose a new plaque, visit www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/blue-plaques Oenophiles listen up! It’s also London Wine Week this May, with boozy delicious events happening across the city from 13th – 19th May. The summer festival sees pop-up wine bars to al fresco parties, decadent dinners and tutored tastings. A free digital pass entitles you to £6 wine flights, and access to a host if different events. To find out more, visit www.drinkup.london/wineweek All things lunar are in the zeitgeist this May, it seems, with the launch of an awe-inspiring exhibition Museum of the Moon at the Natural History Museum, unveiled on 17th May. Museum of the Moon is a touring artwork by UK artist Luke Jerram, a six-metre model featuring meticulously detailed NASA imagery of the lunar surface, ambient moonlight and an evolving soundscape. Street League Skateboarding, one of the world’s most prestigious professional championships will be held in Copper Box Arena, Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park on 25th & 26th May. As the countdown to the historic debut of skateboarding as a sport in the 2020 Olympics continues, SLS is a key target for British skaters on the road to Tokyo. Since 2010, the mainstream championships have taken street skateboarding from a disparate collection of independent events to renowned global competition. Tickets now on sale. Visit www.streetleague.com The 1st Duke of Wellington is a well-known figure in British history, after his 1815 victory over Napoleon Bonaparte in the Battle of Waterloo made him the most celebrated man in Europe. However, the early life of the man himself is less well known. An exhibition at Apsley House on Hyde Park Corner titled Young Wellington in India will for the first time ever explore those formative years and provide insights into Arthur Wellesley, through paintings, sketches and treasures gathered from the eight years he spent in India. Apsley House is still home to the current and 9th Duke of Wellington, a unique survival of an aristocratic home in central London. The exhibition is only open on Saturdays and Sundays, from 10am – 4pm. To find out more, visit www.wellingtoncollection.co.uk. Visit Apsley House, 149 Piccadilly, Hyde Park Corner, W1J 7NT.
