es: I’ve been decluttering my flat, painting walls, and baking endless crumbles for my housemates. As all Mrs Beeton devotees will know, now is also a time for making and bottling damson gin, while fruit is ripe for the picking. There’s plenty to be done at home, which is just as well for this month’s interiors special… Get crafty with Fulham’s Autumn Art and Crafts Fair on Saturday, 22nd September, 10am-6pm, in Bishop’s Park. Join free inspiring workshops, discover new talents, and check what established artists have on offer! The organisers, Art Demos, are passionate about the arts and the positive impact it has on our community: their workshops, for children and adults alike, will not only allow you to explore your creativity, but connect you with our environment in an exciting theme centred on sustainability. These marks have appeared on the main lawn (by the Drawing Room Café). The chapel was first mentioned in historical texts in 1231, which also describe two beer cellars and a wine cellar. It was built of stone and would have been substantial, with a crypt below a raised chapel. There are references to the

The more traditional among you may be pleased to know the huge blue-and-pink plastic monstrosity floating in Hyde Park’s Serpentine is due to be taken down on 23rd September. Whether or not the multi-million pound sculpture is to your taste, however, it’s certainly worth seeing if you haven’t already done so. Stroll past the lake in Hyde Park and you can’t miss it the imposing site of The London Mastaba - a shimmering, colourful, pyramid-like structure inspired by ancient Egyptian tombs. star Q&A Liz Nicholls chats to singer-songwriter and dad Rick Astley, 52, about making his new album and having the best of both worlds
Q.
Nice to speak to you. How’s your summer been? “Fantastic thanks. Lots of touring and pottering in the sun too. We live a stone’s throw from Hampton Court Palace and the other night I was having a glass of rosé in the garden listening to Lionel Richie thinking ‘how wonderful’. I have a little boat – and it really is very little – which I take a couple of mates in to drift off down to the pub – my local is The Albany. There’s something about the river – in the mornings I’ll have a coffee looking at it and if you go off on a boat for even an hour, you feel like you’ve had a day out. It’s a great pace of life.” Q. How did your new album come about?“My wife was in America for a couple of weeks and, like any man left alone, I went to my ‘man cave’! Which is a studio at the end of my garden. Before long I’d made some tunes I really liked and thought ‘maybe I’m halfway through another record’. That’s how the last album [2016’s best-selling 50] happened. That one came after a big break from music and got so much goodwill and love. I don’t kid myself that people are sat there with bated breath waiting for my next album to come out. But we’re on a bit of a roll at the moment.”
“
Q. Speaking of rolls, what about the ‘rickrolling’ phenomenon? “It’s freaky and amazing. Years ago when it started, a friend of mine rickrolled me a few of times and I kept saying ‘yeah very funny, whatever’. I didn’t understand the concept, still don’t really! It keeps going and going – and it’s because of that I ended up invited on stage by the Foo Fighters last summer. I‘m a bit obsessed with the show Westworld and was stunned when the lead actress launched into Never Gonna Give You Up. Bring it on!”
Playing in front of human beings is the exciting bit
Q. Do you love playing live? “Yes; performing in front of human beings is the most exciting bit. Whether it’s your wife or friend – once you play a song and get a good reaction from someone, that’s amazing. Magnify that by playing in front of hundreds, if not thousands of people, and I do think it’s like a drug. It messes with the chemicals in your body and is a weird feeling – weird in a great way. It’s not like the real world.” Q. Which other musicians you love live? “I’ve seen Adele in front of 500 and 80,000 people and she makes such a connection that it’s like being in her living room with her. I was going to say that’s her skill but it’s natural. I saw Gary Barlow the other day – again at Hampton Court Palace. I know Gary and said hi. When you look at his solo and band career he’s got a helluva set list – he’s worked for that and really works for his audience. Having read his book, I know he’s been through some s****y times and I think that always makes you appreciate what you’ve got more, and give more.” l Beautiful Life is out now and Rick Astley will perform at London’s Eventim Apollo on 8th & 9th November.

Time spent commuting is precious minutes - 74 a day on average - that we’ll will never get back… but imagine if you could put that “dead” time to work by getting fit while you travel to work. The guys behind London Fitness Tour have found five cool and easy ways to put the our daily commute to good use, with clever exercises and fitness tricks that will help you effortlessly get fit, toned and energised without having to hit the gym. The two basic actions of breathing and walking are central, and they suggest speed walking, adjusting your breathing pattern, muscle contractions for bum toning, stair workouts and isometric exercises while standing still waiting. For more information and training on the exercises, visit www.londonfitnesstour.com
More on the topic of our London transport… are you fed up with the District line being inexplicably delayed and cancelled without warning? If you have travelled on the tube, DLR, London Overground or TfL rail you have almost certainly been delayed on a hot, sweaty train on numerous occasions, and we all know how frustrating it is. Rather than grumbling, entrepreneur Zevi Sternlicht to set up Reeclaim, a website which automatically seeks refunds from Transport for London. This is technically your entitlement, but the refund site on TfL website is far too complicated to bother with. The ingenious little site allows you to claim money back in minutes, and once you’ve signed up, the money will come in automatically every time you’re delayed for more than 15 minutes on the underground or DLR, or over 30 minutes on the overground or TfL rail. Roman holiday
Jessica Elphinstone discovers Pastaio which offers a taste of Rome in the heart of Soho.
C
acio e pepe. Spaghetti alle vongole. Tagliolini al ragù... The days of overcooked, overpriced spag bol at Bella Italia are long gone (thank God!) and London has gone pasta mad. Following in the wake of the hugely successful Padella in Borough Market, this casual new joint on Soho’s buzzing Carnaby Street is all about fresh pasta, made on site by resident pastai. Pastaio is the brainchild of chef founder Stevie Parle who’s worked in many great London kitchens: River Café, Moro, and Petersham Nurseries to name a few. Under his watchful eye, reams and reams of organic Italian semolina pasta are extruded through bronze, landing on the plates of hungry Londoners.
“
Aromas of fresh herbs waft from the kitchen
The atmosphere is of an Italian aperitivo bar on some trendy corner in Rome: hoards of young professionals linger outside, drinking and chatting as they wait (there are no reservations here). Aromas of fresh herbs waft from the open-plan kitchen, through the large windows and to the seats outside. British designer Tom Dixon worked closely with Stevie to deck out the restaurant, a colourful and contemporary open space that works perfectly in the summer months. slushies, (£4.50 – a must!) and ponder the tidy, minimal menu. The antipasti (£5-£9) are Italian summer on a plate: a refreshing watermelon and feta salad, oozing burrata drizzled in the finest olive oil, and an umami-packed bowl of mussels and clams that I’m still dreaming of weeks later. The latter, cooked in a butter and grillo sauce and mopped up with Coombeshead Farm sourdough, was the star of the evening. Just as they should be, the antipasti were all about top quality ingredients, and flavour. A simple menu of seven simple pasta dishes – and none over £12 – is a noble feat for somewhere just metres from Europe’s busiest shopping street. We particularly relished the wild boar, rabbit and pork agnoli, gyoza-style parcels of rich game in a mild, buttery sauce. It’s also worth noting the cacio e pepe, a little taste of Rome that’s surprisingly hard to find well executed in London. We chose to finish with a generous brick of tiramisu, also reasonably priced and topped with a thick layer of bitter cocoa. If you want decent pasta for decent prices, Pastaio is bang on the money and worth the trip to prolong feelgood summer vibes. But as is so often the case in Italy, the unpretentious antipasti steal the show. ● Pastaio, 19 Ganton St, Soho, W1F 9BN. www.pastaio.london @pastaiolondon September 2018

“ Who Else Is Suffering With Back Pain Or Sciatica, Fed Up With Taking Painkillers And Wants To Return To Having Energy And Mobility For Living Life To The Full Again…? ” By Physiotherapist Orson Wajih
orsonwajih-physiotherapy.com
To the person suffering with back pain or sciatica (or if you know someone who is). • Are back pain or sciatica, disturbed sleep or pain killers leaving you tired and unable to keep active and enjoy family and social events? • Are you concerned you’ll lose your fitness and health because pain is limiting your ability to exercise? • Is pain stopping you fully concentrating and working on the task at hand? • Have you tried pilates, yoga or stretching but the pain isn’t getting better or keeps coming back? • Have you been told by your doctor to take painkillers and rest but it’s not getting better? • Do you now feel that you have to permanently avoid lifting, bending, gardening, sport, fitness classes or anything else that you’d love to do?
I want you to know you are not on your own. If you have been suffering for more than two weeks I want to help you by simply showing you some different, natural options that you may not be aware of. I help people with back pain every day in my clinic. Many have been suffering unnecessarily just because they weren’t aware of simple things they could do to help themselves. Because of this I have written a report that details 9 things any person can do to relieve back pain and sciatica naturally and I want to send you this report at no charge. Now I don’t know if these 9 things will relieve you of your pain completely. And I can’t promise that what has worked for most of my patients in the past 12 years will work for you. However in most cases there are things you can do for yourself to get you back to enjoying life. If your pain is affecting your job, your ability to drive, to keep active and threatens your independence or hinders your family leisure time then you really need to read my free report. I know at least 9 things that could make a HUGE difference to the discomfort and limitation you are experiencing.
It may unlock the agonising mystery of back pain and show you a way to get back to the life you deserve. A life where you can get up in the morning without feeling stiff and “old”. A life where you can pick up and play with your children or grandchildren without worrying when your back is going to “go out” and leave you in agony. A life where you have energy and confidence in your body and can enjoy all the activities that are important to you. This report will reveal some of the myths and mistakes that lead people to reliance on painkillers, worry about surgery and an outlook of less mobility and independence as they get older. When you understand back pain, in most cases there are things you can do for yourself to resolve it. • This FREE report is perfect for active women 50+ worried about looking “awkward” or losing a confident, healthy posture and wanting to get back to moving with vitality and youthful ease. It’s full of easy to follow tips and advice based on my 12 years of helping people like you recover from the daily impact of back pain. It could be the missing link to you getting back to enjoying life and feeling healthy again, especially if you are aged 50+ and have been suffering for more than 2 weeks.

Did you know..?
d Continued... The hormonal cascade during an anxiety response causes us to shallow breathe and suck in more air than we breath out, making the panic worse. A great technique is “The Big Breath”. Tony Ulatowski has used this with more than 400 students in west London, from pre-schoolers to secondary students, for the last year and has received overwhelmingly positive feedback from parents, teachers and pupils. Tony says: “One of the preschool teachers shared her story of a four-year-old girl with anger issues who has now learnt to take herself away, regulate her emotions, and just two or three of the big breaths help her feel better about taking control of her emotions.” A healthy balanced diet including “live” foods, vegetables and fruits can be hugely helpful. Amazingly 90% of serotonin is produced in the gut. A study from Victoria, New Zealand in 2017 found patients with moderate to severe depression had a statistically significant improvement in symptoms on a modified Mediterranean diet. Dr Chatterjee, star of the BBC’s 18 | R&A Fulham

In the UK 16 million people experience mental illness. Three out of four mental illnesses start before the age of 18. 10% of school children have a diagnosable mental illness. Three out of four young people with mental illness are not receiving treatment. The average wait for effective treatment is 10 years. Suicide is still the biggest killer of young people in the UK. People with severe mental illness die 10-20 years earlier than the general population.
There are also some natural supplements which are safe, effective, non-addictive and adaptogenic, and that provide an evidence-based approach for mood imbalance and anxiety in children and teenagers. One of the most widely tested is the ancient spice saffron. Saffron targets the gut as well as the brain. Dr Paul Clayton, Fellow at The Institute of Food, Brain and Behaviour, believes saffron should be considered in place of current therapies, which he believes are outdated and on offtarget. He says: “By targeting core aspects of mood and anxiety, saffron
works far more rapidly than the pharmaceuticals, which are shooting at the wrong target. In short, saffron restores normal nerve function in key areas of the brain. If you have chronic inflammation, the “brakes” are put on a few key processes. Saffron takes the brakes off. Moreover, it acts very fast (hours, not weeks or months), has no withdrawal symptoms, no side effects, and is safe to use with children.” ● Free pharmacist advice, food supplements and natural medicines available from The Naked Pharmacy. Claire Granados suggests how we can help our youngsters improve their much-needed employability skills to enter the job market for the world of work. Here are her five tips...
T
he working world is constantly changing and no longer do we have “jobs for life”. Records show a quarter of graduates who left university ten years ago are in low-paid work, demonstrating university clearly isn’t the right option for all young people. What can you as parents do to ensure teenagers are aware of routes that best

suit their skills and interests? Here are our top tips...
Embrace extracurricular 1. Make sure your children are engaging in hobbies they enjoy
– this allows them to discover nonacademic interests and be openminded about the future. A passion for creating jewellery could result in an innovative young entrepreneur and a mind-blowing start up!
Accept your teen 2. Too many schools and parents believe it is a failure if a young
person doesn’t progress to a toptier university. This is a damaging perception: everybody’s strengths vary. If your child isn’t academically minded or keen on university, accept this and discuss all options with them in a supportive manner.
Celebrate all success 3. Families must celebrate the successes of students who achieve
through a multitude of routes. Promoting students who attend widely respected businesses courses and vocational training alongside

Oxbridge attendees will help your children realise that there are many different paths to a fulfilling career.
Practise soft skills at home 4. Careers training in schools tends to focus on preparing a good CV. This is far from the only requirement for securing a job. Try using a more holistic approach at home to develop your children’s initiative, teamwork and resilience which should be ingrained in them before they enter the workplace.
Encourage research 5. Enthusiasm about the future is the first step to success! Many
students can feel disillusioned with the excessive emphasis on university. Gently suggest to your son or daughter the benefits of browsing options – why not try doing some online aptitude tests or researching apprenticeships? Finding a route that sparks their interest can get them excited about the job market. ● For more advice on how young people can fast-track into the world of work, call Quest on 020 7233 5957 or visit www.questprofessional.co.uk

MULTIPLE CHOICE F
ew topics cause as much debate as school choice. Parents are anxious to find the “right” school but how can that be assessed? Britain’s rigorous inspection regime means there are no “bad” schools but to ensure a child thrives it is essential to make the right choice for each child – “horses for courses”. Searching for the best school where your child can achieve, flourish and fulfil their potential and ambitions can be daunting. Information is readily available from the school on academic subjects offered, exam
success and future destinations, extra and super-curricular involvement, pastoral care etc which will help narrow down the process. You may also want to consider additional factors – could your child need extra learning support? Does your child have special interests which need to be nurtured and encouraged? Will the school engender the right attitude and provide the necessary skills for the fast-changing world of the future? For all of these, a thorough school visit, meeting the head, some staff and current pupils, is necessary. Nothing can replace the gut feeling about a school’s atmosphere,

he internet presents a tremendous opportunity to help children with education and learning, but it is important for them to learn how to browse responsibly. This is why Google is committing to reaching over 1 million children through its Be Internet Legends and Be Internet Citizens programmes. Last year, we conducted research with more than 200 teachers to learn about their experience with online safety in the classroom. We found that teachers believe children should start learning about online safety as early as the age of seven and that 99% felt that this should be a part 22 | R&A Fulham
How do you choose the right school or nursery for your child? Jane Phelps, founder of JCP advisory educational consultancy, advises... observing how pupils relate and respond to the teachers, how the children treat each other. The world is full of damaged adults who were sent to a “good” school but not a good school for them, and they’ve suffered. Taking time, trouble and advice is the best way to ensure the best outcome, where you can enjoy your child’s education as much as they do. ● If you would like support on choosing a school, or your child would like help selecting the right subjects to study. help with uni application or post-school or uni choices, call Jane on 07713 098043 or visit www.Jcpadvisory.com

Head to the V&A to explore Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up celebrating the great Mexican artist through her work and possessions

September 2018
S
he has inspired generations of artists and designers with her self portraits and passionate, vibrant and colourful creations. Now the work of the legendary Mexican icon Frida Kahlo is being honoured with a unique exhibition at London’s V&A museum. The show offers an unparalleled insight into the life of one of the most influential artists and women of the 20th century. Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up is the first exhibition outside Mexico to display the artist’s clothes and intimate possessions, reuniting them with key self-portraits and photographs to offer a fresh perspective on her compelling life story. Many objects have never been on show before. The exhibition showcases more than 200 objects from the Blue House, on the outskirts of Mexico City, where the artist was born, lived and died. Personal items including outfits, letters, jewellery, cosmetics, medicines and medical corsets were discovered in 2004 – 50 years after being sealed in the Blue House by her husband Diego Rivera following her death in 1954. Exploring Kahlo’s highly choreographed appearance and style, these include 22 distinctive colourful Tehuana garments and pre-Columbian necklaces that she strung herself. Examples of intricately hand-painted corsets and prosthetics are displayed alongside film and photography of the artist as a visual narrative of her life. Included in Kahlo’s make-up selection is her eyebrow pencil “Ebony”, still within its original packaging, which she used to emphasise her signature mono brow. Kahlo empowered herself through her art and dress after suffering a devastating near-fatal bus crash at the age of 18 which rendered her bed-bound and immobilised for protracted periods. Self-portraiture became the primary focus of her art at this point and she began to paint using a mirror inset into the canopy of her four-poster bed. Claire Wilcox, senior curator of fashion at the V&A, says: “This show offers a powerful insight into how Frida Kahlo constructed her own identity. It is a rare opportunity to access an archive that has never left Mexico before.” Co-curator Circe Henestrosa adds: “The exhibition is a very personal experience with deeply individualised objects on show – particularly her corsets, which she decorated and painted, making them appear as though she had explicitly chosen to wear them.” ● Frida Kahlo: Making Her Self Up runs until 4th November. Admission £15, V&A members free. www.roundandabout.co.uk

Fans are promised a night of unbridled joy when one of the world’s most renowned singers brings his varied repertoire to the Southbank with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra
S
ir Bryn Terfel has been honoured by the Queen for services to music, and now he will show off his remarkable voice that has won him an army of fans across the globe.
Since winning the Lieder Prize in 1989, Welshman Bryn, who is 52, has not only conquered the stages of the great opera houses, but also proved himself equally at home on the concert platform.
The great bass-baritone singer is booked for one night only at the Southbank next month, on Friday, 5th October, to belt out a selection of favourite songs and arias.
Bryn’s career has taken him from the opening ceremony of the Millennium Stadium to a gala concert in New York’s Central Park with his great friend Andrea Bocelli.
Expect to hear classics such as Mozart’s Non Piu Andrai from The Marriage of Figaro, along with works as diverse as Wagner, Verdi and Bok’s If I Were a Rich Man from Fiddler on the Roof.
Growing up on a farm, he was taught to sing by a family friend as a young child and has always been proud of his roots. He was awarded the CBE in 2003, the Queens Medal for Music in 2006 and a knighthood last year.
Recently, to get critical acclaim, he took on the role of another knight, Sir John Falstaff, at the Royal Opera House. ● Sir Bryn Terfel will perform at the Royal Festival Hall on Friday, 5th October. Visit www. southbankcentre.co.uk

Mussel linguine with saffron cream &samphire
Once you get going with this recipe, it’s a bit of a whirlwind from pan to plate so get your ingredients prepped before turning on the hob. Take four large, firm tomatoes and score a cross into the base of each before placing in boiling water for a minute or two then use a slotted spoon to transfer to cold water. When cool enough to handle, peel off skins, remove seeds and membrane, chop and leave to one side. In a small bowl add 3tbsp of just-boiled water to a good pinch of saffron threads and leave until needed. Thinly slice four cloves of garlic, finely chop a handful of fresh parsley and zest one lemon, adding the juice from half. Measure 150ml white wine and 4tbsp of single cream.Bring a large pan of salted water to a boil and cook pasta. Meanwhile, heat 2tbsp olive oil in a pan with a lid and gently sauté your garlic, until golden; add your tomato, wine, saffron (with infused water) and season. Bring to a boil, letting the wine cook out a few minutes, then add 400g of fresh mussels and cook for about five minutes (with lid on) until open. Add lemon juice, zest, cream and samphire with a sprinkle of Aleppo chilli flakes and check seasoning, cooking for a few minutes before stirring into pasta. Serve with fresh parsley.

Rose veal schnitzel
3
Autumnal coleslaw
You can use pork or chicken for this schnitzel but I think rose veal works best for its sweet and tender flavour. Make breadcrumbs with day-old bread (or dry slowly in a warm oven before blitzing to small crumbs in a food processor; I like to add rosemary and lemon zest). Place your breadcrumbs in a shallow dish then whisk two eggs and place in a second shallow dish and place well-seasoned plain flour in a third. Cover your escalopes with greaseproof paper and beat to about 5mm thin. Coat each in flour then egg then crumb and refrigerate until required. Heat olive oil with a knob of butter and when a crumb dropped in sizzles and rises to the surface, cook each schnitzel for a minute or two on each side until they turn crispy golden. Blot with kitchen paper and serve with fresh lemon.
Chop the following finely and add to a large bowl; one fennel bulb, six radishes, half a red onion, ¼ green cabbage and ¼ red cabbage then add a grated carrot. Make your dressing by mixing 250g natural yoghurt with two minced garlic cloves, 1tsp of Dijon mustard, ½ tsp each of celery salt and ground pepper and juice of ½ a lemon. Stir in the coleslaw and garnish with chopped toasted pecans.
