S TAR Q&A

Fry & mighty! Actor, comedian & writer Stephen Fry, 62, tells us about his new show Mythos: A Trilogy – Gods. Heroes. Men which is on tour this month, including Oxford & London

Q.

Can you tell us about the show? “I tried Mythos out at the Shaw Festival in Canada last year. It went well and made interesting use of the stage; it’s not stand-up, not drama. It felt like a new genre, yet it’s the oldest genre there is – gathering people round the fire to tell them how everything began.” Q. It sounds like a return to the oral tradition? “The myths are such great stories; it struck me as a fun way of telling them. I also noticed a lot of people enjoy audio books. Because these stories were originally told to other listeners, they work well in that communal sense. After a long day’s work of chasing antelope, early humans would come back and sit round the fire and tell stories of how the world was made, how spiders would spin webs...” Q. Is Greek mythology alive & well? “The stories cast a kind of spell if you are telling them right. Two of the most popular ‘man-made’ mythological sequences are the Tolkien and the JK Rowling series. I suppose you could add the Marvel Comics Universe, and Game of Thrones to that mix. These are 20th century versions of Greek myth, and they owe everything to Greek myth. It shows a great yearning for stories out of our own milieu. The moment you are inside that story, it’s universal because it’s about the human spirit without it being about living in London, or in 10 | SEPTEMBER 2019

Manchester, or New York, or Hong Kong. You have the elemental nature of greed, betrayal, lust, love, passion. You don’t have to think it’s a satire on politics. That’s part of the excitement of it.” Q. Do people need to have studied classics at school? “There is an enormous appetite among all kinds of people to put right what they left out at school. That’s why history, science and art are so popular. More people go to art galleries in London than football matches. There is this hunger for knowing more, a curiosity. I hope I can take the smell of the school out of Greek myths because a lot of people believe you have to be intellectual to understand them. But it’s not a test of intelligence; quite the reverse. It’s welcoming you into this fantastic world, which is universal, sexy, juicy, full of fury and rage and adventures.” Q. Can you give us an example of a myth that resonates today? “The story of Pandora’s Box is analogous with the rise of the internet. The Greeks understood that if something was too good to be true, then it was too good to be true. Everything casts a shadow – it took us a little bit of time to realise that the internet was casting a shadow.” The shows visits Oxford’s New Theatre & London Palladium. Tickets from £43.50. It’s heartening that an increased awareness of environmental issues and workers' conditions is resulting in Londoners turning away from fast fashion and seeking their retail fix elsewhere. Never too late to learn There are more than 1,000 courses to choose from at Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education

M

ore than 14,000 adult students – ranging in age from 18 to 95 – study each year at Oxford University’s Department for Continuing Education. In fact, Oxford University has a few thousand more lifelong learners than it has undergraduates. Surprised? Don’t be. Adult learners have been studying at the University for more than 140 years. Many take courses for personal enrichment, to advance careers, or to revisit an educational ‘first love’. From history to creative writing, from nanotechnology to philosophy – there are more than 1,000 courses and programmes to choose from. The new academic year begins in September, so if you’re looking to learn something new, now is your chance. Do your brain a favour Learning new things is not only enjoyable – it’s also part of a healthy lifestyle. Recent research in the area of ‘brain plasticity’ confirms that the adult brain can continue to develop though adulthood and into old age – but only when it is stimulated by learning new things. Until the 1960s, the scientific community believed that a steady mental decline from adulthood into old age was inevitable. We now know that this is inaccurate. Faced with new stimuli, the brain forms new synaptic connections, generates new neurons,

and creates neural pathways between brain cells – according to research from Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and MIT, to name a few. A study published in The Lancet in July 2017 lists nine lifestyle changes that could prevent one-third of future dementia cases. Educational attainment and lifelong learning were among the most important. Learning designed for your needs Continuing Education courses are designed specifically for students wishing to study part-time. Many adult students are re-entering education after a period away; many are embarking on University-level education for the first time. Continuing Education tutors are skilled at working with students who come from all walks of life. The shortest courses are day schools – just a single day in duration, with no tests or papers to write. From there, you might opt for more of a challenge – for example, a class that meets weekly over 10 weeks, either face-to-face or entirely online. And if you want to progress further, it’s possible to gain an undergraduate award, or even an Oxford Master’s or DPhil in many subjects. Next steps? It’s not too late to enrol on a course for September. Check what’s on offer and choose your course at: www.conted.ox.ac.uk. And you can read more about lifelong learning and brain plasticity at: www.conted.ox.ac.uk/grow-your-brain R&A | 13

When I go to one of the chains to watch a movie, I’m rarely excited by the experience, and when I am it’s like being a kid again and that’s what I would liken outdoor cinema too, it makes going to the cinema feel like it used to feel when you were a kid. ou don’t need to be a child to love Roald Dahl’s fantastic stories or those of latter-day children’s favourite David Walliams... but have you got what it takes to be the next Roald or David or JK Rowling yourself? Well, we are challenging you to have a go at writing your own story in 500 words. Your story can be about anyone or anything, past, present or future, it can make us laugh, cry or leave us thinking; let your imagination run riot! The only condition is that your story should start with these words: “Sam was cycling down the hill when all of a sudden…”

It’s then up to you whether Sam is a boy or a girl and what happens next. Entries will be judged on their plot, use of characters, language and enjoyment. The competition will be split into two age groups; d

Meet science teacher Dr Dread who is half man, half monster; the furious Miss Seethe who is on a detention rampage and Mr Phobe, who is terrified of children. David Walliams has sold more than 30 million books worldwide and has this advice: “When I was a child I devoured every book I could get my hands on. I loved losing myself in colourful and dramatic stories.” He says Roald Dahl’s Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was his favourite. “Everything about it electrified me.” So now it’s over to you... The Woodland Trust’s free trees for school scheme aims to get children ‘doing their bit’ for the environment

M

ixing maths with mud and tree planting with poetry have proved to be a great way to get children excited about the natural environment. The Woodland Trust’s free trees for schools scheme combines learning with the opportunity to green up school grounds and online curriculumlinked resources for teachers offer support lesson plans. Research on behalf of the Woodland Trust found primary age children who planted trees felt as if they were ‘doing their bit’ to help the environment and remember it for years after.

Tree-mendous fun!

The Woodland Trust’s schools and community engagement manager Karen Letten said: “Planting trees and creating woodland is a great way to connect children with nature. It engages them with the environment, educates them on the care and maintenance of trees and the benefits they bring and provides a stimulating topic that can be linked to many subjects in the school curriculum. Mixing maths with mud and planting with poetry is highly recommended!” The trust’s dedicated educational website Tree Tools for Schools has a wealth of teaching resources and ideas, all fronted by Keith, a giant oak leaf. For more information and to get your free trees, visit www.treetoolsforschools.org.uk

You can learn as much outside the classroom as you can inside at Under The Canopy Forest School

L

Learning isn’t just about what goes on in the classroom, Under The Canopy Forest School allows children to learn outside the classroom among nature. It aims to encourage time spent away from technology and to increase learning and creativity for all. The Forest School approach is more child-led and aims to improve social skills, self-confidence, the development of language, communication and motor skills and to create a better knowledge of the environment. Children are given freedom to direct their own learning and get involved in a certain amount of “risky play”. Among the activities children can get involved in are building and cooking on a fire, building dens and shelters, hunting for minbeasts, climbing trees and creating a bug hotel, hedgehog shelter and nature art. The Forest School takes place in a woodland 20 | SEPTEMBER 2019

environment near Gerrards Cross and encompasses a woodland, dell and meadow with an array of flora, fauna and wildlife. In addition to the Forest School, there are family sessions, stay and play for children and their carers, a holiday club, twilight forest school under the canopy, as well as the opportunity to have a child’s party, bespoke events and courses for schools and nurseries as well as events for adults. Opening doors An independent education can be for everyone with fee assistance

I

ndependent schools believe having a broad social mix of pupils more appropriately reflects our society and is one of the reasons why many have made funding available for families on lower incomes. Across all Independent Schools Council (ISC) schools, one third of pupils receive some form of fee assistance. If you are thinking about an independent school for your child but deterred by the cost, a bursary could well be the answer. But why should you consider an independent school for your child in the first place? They tend to have smaller class sizes, excellent exam results and a good record of entry to leading universities. Many give over a significant amount of time to cultural activities and offer a wide variety of sporting opportunities and some will specialise in these areas. The pupil to teacher ratio also means independent schools can offer a good level of pastoral care and for that of those with special educational needs. Look at various schools’ websites and visit as soon as possible to find the one that is right for your child’s needs. Perhaps your child would benefit from boarding –

this is a great option if you live further away. Your child will have the chance to enjoy a wider range of activities. Some schools offer weekly boarding whereby your child will go home at the weekend. “Will my child fit in?” is a common question when it comes to choosing an independent school, but the inclusive environments full of children from diverse backgrounds means the answer to that is yes! Look at the fee assistance schemes on offer. Bursaries are means tested and offer a great way for children from hard-working families to be able to afford the fees. Parents or guardians must complete a declaration to establish if the student meets the criteria, the school will then look at ...a great way for what is realistic for each family to afford hard-working and sets a fee accordingly. families to Some schools will contribute to extras such as uniforms, books and trips. afford fees Almost 45,000 pupils are on means-tested assistance at ISC schools of which there are 1,385 across the country to choose from. Some schools also offer scholarships for pupils who are strong academically, musically or excel in sport or art. For more information about fee assistance visit www.isc.co.uk

Student mentoring W

hen I worked in Sixth Form I saw some revision that lacked focus and planning: students staring at textbooks, mind maps produced for one topic and the rest neglected or endless highlighting until books were full of neon. I worked with these students to organise their study and give structure and purpose to revision. Each student worked in a unique way and needed tailored support, from this grew my business: Study Mentors – a bespoke study support service. As every student is individual, so are their ways of learning, organising and scheduling study and this is where Study Mentors can make the difference. I work with students who are preparing for GCSEs, A levels, Common Entrance or those searching for a study system that works for public exams. I explore three strands of study: • Organisation: are students ready to study with organised subject files and a clear knowledge of all subject topics and the examination process;

CJA Educational Consultancy helps parents find the right school for their child and situation

W

22 | SEPTEMBER 2019

• Study Methods: do students know what to do when they start and, if not, we explore and experiment with study and revision techniques; • Timetables: students reflect on which days and times they work best, think about dedicating parts of their day to study and together we plan specific tasks for specific times using timetables. I check in regularly with students to promote the mentoring and involve parents in all communications so they can provide support too. Contact Jo: jo@thestudymentors.co.uk or call 07906 610202.

The best for

Over the past 10 years competition for places from nursery to sixth form has become something many parents face in London. Depending on whether you live in the correct catchment and there is a good local school, or decide to choose an independent school, there are different entry routes. Nursery entrance depends on where you live and availability. Some schools have feeder nurseries and may require an entrance assessment for Reception. Many independent schools set entrance requirements from age 7. Maintained schools often focus on English, maths and/or verbal and non-verbal reasoning.

Jo Carroll has the answers when it comes to revision how long for, when to start and how to improve recall

your child

It is always worth considering schools on the outskirts of London, perhaps less well known and it’s worth considering if boarding is an option? CJA Educational Consultancy can support parents all the way through education, completing projective reports and researching relevant options depending on where a client lives or plans to live. CJA Educational Consultancy’s top tips: • Register your child for schools well in advance • Visit nurseries and schools more than once • Read Ofsted and ISI reports • Listen to advice given by your current school • Ask other parents with older children For more information visit www. cjaeducationalconsultancy.com

The National Deaf Children’s Society has revealed some horrifying statistics, including the fact that almost half of London councils withhold "life-changing" technology from young deaf children. 14 of London’s 32 councils don’t provide 0-4 year-old deaf children with radio aids to use at home. Radio aids, which transmit the user’s voice straight to a child’s hearing technology, allow deaf children to develop crucial language and communication skills. More than 3,000 deaf children live in the areas covered by those councils and risk missing out. Visit www.ndcs.org.uk

September is the last chance to visit Buckingham Palace’s special Queen Victoria’s Palace exhibition which marks the 200th anniversary of Victoria's birth. Queen Victoria ascended the throne on 20th June 1837, aged 18. She moved into Buckingham Palace within three weeks, becoming the first monarch to use it as an official residence. Alzheimer’s Society, the UK’s leading dementia charity, is alerting MPs across the South East to the scale of the care crisis and the injustice faced by local people living with the condition. The charity is calling on politicians of all parties to back a dedicated Dementia Fund. The diverse collection of powerful stories were chosen to illustrate the challenges that people affected by dementia face, and to inform the debate on social care reform. The Smile Brigade’s community kitchen at Clem Attlee Community Hall is now open.

T

he Smile Brigade are a Hammersmith and Fulham based social enterprise. This friendly team offer free and heavily subsidised services and activities to people on low incomes or at risk of loneliness, with a particular focus on homeless and elderly people. The community kitchen provides free meals and offers signposting to local services with the hope of relieving some of the effects of poverty and social isolation among residents. The kitchen launch earlier this summer was attended by representatives from local services and residents alike, including Hammersmith and Fulham Mayor Councillor Daryl Brown.

30 | SEPTEMBER 2019

Samia Meah Photography

Unlike your regular/traditional soup kitchens, which are means-tested, The Smile Brigade’s Community Kitchen is open to everyone regardless of income. All are welcome to enjoy a free hot meal and a chat with their neighbours/peers while getting to find out about other local services, with the occasional live band or performer

adding to the ambience of the kitchen and providing some much-needed light relief in a world that needs more light, more love and more positivity. Free clothes and toiletries are given to people who need them, with essential items such as sanitary towels and underwear regularly donated by local people, businesses and organisations. While run by volunteers, the kitchen relies on donations to contribute towards running costs and to offer free cooking lessons to local residents who’d like to learn how to prep and cook, nutritious and delicious food. Free sessions run every Tuesday, 122pm at Clem Attlee Community Hall 21 Len Freeman Place, SW6 7TN. Visit www.thesmilebrigade.org

Just when you thought we as a city couldn’t get any more obsessed with brunch, along comes London Brunch Fest, taking place at the Old Truman Brewery, Brick Lane, E1 6QR, on Saturday 31st August and Sunday 1st September. Bigger, better and brunchier than their inaugural event last year, there will be coffee, cocktails, workshops, talks, music, demos, and more delicious all-day brunch than you can shake an avocado at. Make a bee-line for the dessert area, with cookies, cakes, soft serve and sweets galore. For every dish a donation is made to Magic Breakfast, a charity providing nutritious breakfast to children in London’s poorest schools. Visit www.londonbrunchfest.com The New York Times has partnered with The Royal Geographic Society to host a one-off event titled How to Change Your Life on Saturday, 14th September. Part of the How to Academy, this full day of masterclasses and keynote speakers is dedicated to the simple yet powerful philosophy of being the change you want to see. The star line-up includes Caitlin Moran, BBC Radio 4’s Claudia Hammond and Labour MP Jess Phillips. www.howtoacademy.com.

There's another interesting and less expensive panel of highly influential women speakers. On 26th September, 7-8.30pm in The Emmanuel Centre, 9-23 Marsham Street, SW1P 3DW, MPs Rachel Reeves and Priti Patel will join Mary Beard on the Intelligence Squared stage to discuss how women negotiate political power in what remains, in many ways, a man’s world. Women parliamentarians face increasing levels of abuse and threats of violence on social media. Visit www.intelligencesquared.com September is Urology Awareness Month. Organised by The Urology Foundation, this aims to raise awareness of urological diseases (which include prostate cancer and incontinence, and are estimated to affect 50% of us in our lifetimes) as well as to raise money to fund vital research and training. It can be difficult to discuss urinary symptoms openly, but the foundation is encouraging people to speak out, seek advice and take control of their bladder. The Urology Foundation have issued a set of tips and guidelines for incontinence, which is estimated to affect one in six adults but can be difficult to discuss with friends and loved ones. They also recommend cutting down on caffeine, alcohol (especially white wine) and smoking as ways to help ease symptoms, as well as doing more exercise, staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy weight. FOOD

Fruit & branch Jessica Elphinstone enjoys al fresco fine dining at Pomonas in Notting Hill

I

t wasn’t until after all ten dishes of our gorgeous supper at Pomonas were cleared away that I discovered who Pomona really is: she’s the Roman goddess of fruit trees. She’s not a boozy hedonist like Bacchus, but a life-giving wood nymph who nurtures the land and watches over orchards as they grow. And on that late summer evening, as we sat in the charming garden terrace and enjoyed the bounty of seasonal produce from the The spirit of this British Isles, this spirit was all around us.

goddess was all around us

Chef Ruth Hansom, the first female winner of Young National Chef of the Year in 2017, has taken over the kitchen aged just 23 and is injecting a new freshness into it. The menu showcases the abundance of the English garden, laden with sour plums and apricots, gooseberries and courgettes, which of course tastes even better eaten in the context of a garden. The restaurant is pleasantly quiet on a Monday night, and my friend Olivia and I have the terrace almost to ourselves, soaking up the evening sunshine as we enjoy a glass of Nyetimber sparkling wine.

Though Ruth has worked at The Ritz, she’s taking the stuffiness out of fine dining, and the tasting menu is designed to share, outside, without a starched tablecloth in sight. We opt for this, and are immediately rewarded with a hot plate of truffle and honey gougères, which rival Clare Smyth’s ones up the road at the two-Michelinstarred Core. The rest is just as strong, drawing on the land and sea for inspiration: canapés of wild salmon tartare on tapioca crackers are zesty and exotic, while an umami-rich duck breast with turnips and apricots is homely and traditional. We swap out veal for a beetroot ceviche, where smoky almonds, sour plum and horseradish make the earthy beetroot sing. Though the phrase “farm to fork” is vastly overused, Pomonas do celebrate their ingredients: the tomatoes come from the Isle of Wight, eggs from Clarence Court, crab from Dorset and lamb from Swaledale, one of the most remote hill farms in Yorkshire. Pomona is a goddess of harvest bounty, and if she were a chef I have no doubt that talented young Ruth Hansom would be her human incarnation. ● Pomonas, 47 Hereford Rd, Notting Hill, W2 5AH.
