Bettys stroy starting in Harrogate in 1919 has made afternoon tea the height of fashion throughout England. Before you enter Bettys Tea Room, you will notice the wrought iron canopy that stands above you, and feast your eyes on the delicious cakes and window displays. Greeted with a warm welcome and led to your table either in the Imperial Room or the Montepellier Cafe Bar, you will notice the dining style is that of the cosmopolitan cities of Switzerland and France. The menu is vast with selections of continental-style sandwiches and filled rolls, handmade cakes, tortes and patisserie. Enjoy a Tea for Two with delicious scones with clotted cream and strawberry preserve, don’t forget to use the tea strainer to have the perfect brew. On a early crisp October afternoon travelling on the Route 36 surrounded by beautiful surroundings we drove past Bettys and knew we had to venture in. The eye-catching exterior drew us in. Arriving at Bettys we saw the stunning window displays of Halloween treats with parcels and packages, from pumpkins and witches to novelty biscuits. We were welcomed and greeted by a smartly dressed waitress who led us to our table in the Montepellier Cafe Bar. Taking in the atmosphere, enjoying the company of fellow diners of all ages, we noticed a fond memory most of us have, a grandma and granddaughter enjoying their afternoon tea straight from school. We enjoyed tea, sandwhiches and scones, with high class table service. The food was excellent prsented on silver tiers. Our experience was more than we expected and visiting Bettys is a must.

1 million Revamp for 36 buses. Transdev Harrogate and District Bus Company are investing over a million pounds in creating “the people’s bus”. The entire fleet of 14 double decker buses in use on the number 36 service from Ripon, Harrogate to Leeds, are being completely rebuilt following a unique consultation with passengers on the route.
Extra buses are being drafted in to replace buses.
As the new vehicles are being reated extra buses are being drafted in to replace buses as they go off to the workshops. Buses are going to be completely rebuilt including: new engines, gearboxes, new heating systems as well as totally refurbishing the interiors and increasing passenger seat and leg room, to give passengers greater comfort and space. Still with the selection of double and single seats, acknowledging that sometimes Nigel added, “Rebuilding the buses isn’t passengers want to sit on their own. a cheap option, we have spent £80,000 Marketing Director for Transdev on each vehicle, have done the work, the Harrogate & District, Nigel Eggleton buses will be like new and more imporsaid, “The 36 is a unique bus tantly they will be exactly what we and service and although many passengers our passengers want.” make short hops on the route many are travelling quite long distance with us. Kites... As part of a UK conservation initiative, The Red Kites were released on the Harewood estate in 1999. They were reintroduced in to the Lowland areas of Yorkshire. The scheme is now complete and the self-sustaining population gradually increased each year. How to spot a Red Kite! The Red Kite has a grey/white head with a reddish brown body and a deeply forked tail and it has a mewlike call which isrepeated quickly. A Red Kite can live up to 25 years, but and average life of a Red kite in the wild is around 8-10 years. It’s usually around 60-65cm in length and has a wing span from 175-195cm.
Other names for the Red Kite: Swedish: Glada. Old English: Puttock. Midlands: Buzzards. Cornish: Scoul. Essex: Crotchtail. Welsh: Barcud. Yorkshire: Gled Threats to the Red Kite: Red Kites still suffer from threats in Great Britain such as: injury and death being hit by vehicles, electrocution on power lines, poisoned rat to their young, all the Red Kite chicks may die.
Harewood Bird Garden is working with Yorkshire Red Kites, headed by Doug Simpson, who has been involved in the reintroduction project from the beginning, in partnership with Yorkshire Water PLC to provide a rehabilitation pen. The enclosure gives injured Red Kites time to recover in an area away from people, for eventual release into the wild again. Along with Harewood Estate we help provide staffing to feed and care for any injured Red Kites brought to Harewood. They are primarily scavengers, eating mostly carrion (dead birds and mammals) as their feet are too weak to kill any prey much bigger than a small rabbit, though they will feed on chicks, small mammals and invertebrates such as worms, beetles and even ies.

36 wins ‘Route of
As i stood at the busy bus station, it was apparent that the 36 had arrived. The bold bus entered the bus station with a distinct presence on the road. From here I knew I had to speak to the main man behind this unique bus. Speaking to Nigel Eggelton (managing director) When asked if it was the companies invision to create such a bold bus on the road he said: “ Yes we did have that invision in mind, we really wanted to create a unique bus experience and to enjoy it as part of their day out and not just a mode of transport.” Nigel also shared his delight about winning the ‘Route of the year’ award. “ We are delighted that we have won this award, we’ve workedhard to get this far and its made very proud.” This is fantastic for Transdev (the bus company) and an inspiration for future projects and other bus companies. Which poses questions to whether other bus companies will copy the idea of a luxary bus on longer routes. We asked Nigel his thoughts on this, he said: “ We’re not afraid of copcats, it’s just great that people look up to what we’ve achieved.” He then added: “Recently transport action groups have been pressing for more capacity on the rail route between Harrogate and Leeds. We’re not in direct competition with the trains but during the day a journey from Harrogate to Leeds can take just 45 minutes and if your

bus stop and the destination are well placed the door-to-door journey can be quicker on the no36.” On average there are over a hundred people a day using the 36 bus route and this figure is constantly growing. An extra 20,000 extra seats a month have are being added on the routes between Leeds Harrogate and Ripon on the no36. Transdev has introduced more seats and extra journeys on its flagship 36 route between Ripon, Harrogate and Leeds as they have seen an increase in passengers and want to provide the best quality of travel for them. Nigel explained, “We’ve seen a remarkable growth in passenger numbers on the no36 over the past few years. It’s a classic example of how modern comfortable buses with bright attractive interiors can encourage new passengers and tempt people to leave their cars at home.” Services will now run every 15 minutes throughout the daytime from Monday to Saturday. After travelling on the bus a number of times, I’ve found its very comfortable and there is more room than other buses I’ve been on. The design is exclusive to the 36 buses and at the height of modern day technology. When asking Nigel on the the concept of desgin and whether the passengers really appreciate the comfort, as as if it attracts people to use the bus instead of others he said: “We’ve been at

the forefront with a number of innovations in the last few years, not only with the design of our buses but with satellite tracking systems to improve reliability and an award winning iPhone
app. The extra journeys and seats aren’t the end of things as we’ll be unveiling more exciting plans for the route in the
next month or so.” After hearing the news of the One million pound revamp I was curious to know why they are planning to revamp the buses further late next year. “ We’re looking to advance further in our future, with other bus companies attempting to copy us and our concept we need to keep ahead of the game.” Speaking to a local bus driver of one of the buses, he agreed the new buses are fantastic but he hopes the revamp will help the power/technical flaws the busses currently have. The engines are’nt that powerful for the size of the vehicle. Nigel responded these queries: “ We are looking to focus the revamp on enhancing the bus power and speed as well as technical issues the drivers have. Theres no point in having a good image bus if it doesnt run well.” After speaking to Nigel, we have seen he is very proud of the route 36 bus and it is clear the whole Transdev
team have worked hard to create a spectacular bus. It is a great accomplishment for local transport and the future only looks bright for this company and bus travel.
