INTRO NO LONGER GETTING YOUR KICKS ON ROUTE 66? Then why not enjoy the unexpected pleasures of Route 62 as you travel through Paarl/Wellington, the Breede River, Klein Karoo, the Langkloof, the beaches of Jeffreys Bay, Port Elizabeth and Addo National Park. Route 62 meander through a thousand kilometers of mountains, fertile valleys, semi deserts and offers a shorter alternative to the N2 Highway. Route 62 prompts associations with the legendary Route 66, connecting the urban and rural communities between Los Angeles and Chicago. Route 66 was established in 1926 as one of America’s main east west arterial links providing small towns access to a major thoroughfare. Similarly Route 62 links the wine growing areas of Paarl, Wellington, Tulbagh, Ceres, the Breede River with the Klein Karoo, the ostrich farming of Oudtshoorn, the fruit farms of Joubertinia, Louterwater and Kareedouw and the legendary beaches of Jeffreys Bay. Coupled with the historic villages of Amalienstein and Zoar, the friendly city of Port Elizabeth and Addo National Park, where the interaction between humans and elephant are unsurpassable and you have the perfect tourist route. Ironically the public lobby for rapid mobility and improved highways that gained Route 66 enormous popularity in earlier decades, also signalled its demise in the mid 1950’s. Route 66 was replaced by other higways which caused a severe decrease in traffic. This greatly affected the economies of the smaller towns. With the completion of the N2 highway in 1958, Route 62 suffered the same fate. Although the villages along the route have been in hibernation for 40 years, they have been beutifully preserved and set in wealthy farming communities. Add incredible mountain passes built in the 18th Century, San Rock art, a steam train experience, spectacular drive through canyons and Route 62 ensures a fairy tale experience that legends and special memories are made of.

Ceres - Accommodation & Activities

Ceres

The Eden of the Cape Ceres is reached from the south by crossing the rugged Michell’s Pass, completed in 1848 by the famous road engineer Andrew Geddes Bain. Ceres is situated on a fertile plain surrounded by magnificent mountains and is one of the country’s most important deciduous fruit growing centres. Visitors can enjoy farm tours, pick cherries in season, and taste locally produced fruit juices, home-made preserves and dried fruit. The Dwars River flowing through the centre of town eventually becomes the Breede River, which meanders down to the coast at Witsand enriching many R62 settlements on the way. Ceres has a thriving arts and crafts community and is home to the largest toy car collection in SA. San rock art can be appreciated at the famous Kagga Kamma private reserve and 4X4 enthusiasts have a number of options available to them. For the energetic there is horse and quad riding, abseiling, skydiving and hiking and accommodation is plentiful. Bonnievale

The Valley of Cheese and Wine Bonnievale is a friendly country village spread out along the banks of the Breede River and surrounded by wine and dairy farms. In fact the human population is outnumbered two-to-one by the cows in the vicinity. The well known cheese factories produce more than 100 tons of cheese every day and are open to vistors. An interesting 64 km circular drive from Bonnivale is recommended and takes in historic wine farms, horse studs, colourful peach and apricot orchards in spring and constant views of the sparkling Breede River. Other local attractions are a lovely golf course, a khoi farm, antique shops and the Myrtle Rigg Church, built at the behest of a dying 10 year old girl. Boating and fishing along the tree-lined river are favourite pastimes. Bonnievale is also the headquarters of the popular two-day Breede River Canoe Marathon, attracting close to 500 paddlers in September every year. In the heart of Route 62 Ashton is situated between Robertson and Swellendam and forms part of the worlds longest wine route. The awesome Langeberg mountain range forms a backdrop to the town with the Breede river threading it’s way through the countryside to the south. There are five excellent wineries in the region well worth a visit. Go birdwatching, cycling or go cruising down the river and enjoy a glass of wine and a light lunch at a riverside wine estate. Maps are available at the tourism bureau. Ashton is also the capital of the canning industry in South Africa. The huge fruit and vegetable canning factories offer informative guided tours to interested groups. Tours must be booked by prior arrangement. In the main road close by, a steam locomotive, no longer in action, stands on display. This old class14CRB was commissioned in 1919 and was used on the Worcester-Mossel Bay line until 1983 when it was finally retired. Visitors can follow the markers by car to a scenic viewpoint for a panoramic vista and photo opportunity. Ask at the bureau for details. Those looking for an adreneline rush can enquire about rock-climbing in the rugged Cogmanskloof just 2 kms out of town. Ladismith - Accommodation & Activities

Ladismith Lady of the Klein Karoo

Ladismith is scenically located in the shadow of the formidable peaks of the Klein Swartberg mountain range and enjoys the typical clear skies and sunny weather of the Klein Karoo. Travelling along the R62 from Barrydale the unmistakeable cleft peak of Towerkop comes into view from many miles away. First climbed in 1885 by a 19 year old Ladismith man, a feat was not repeated until 1947, the mountain still draws the adventurous. The rich farmland of the valleys, vibrant with colour from vinyard and orchard, contrast with the blue-grey mountain slopes and the dark kloofs. The town itself boasts historic buildings with eight distinct architectural styles, several of which have been declared national monuments. The quiet leafy streets and starlit evenings make for a recuperative stopover. Just 25 kms east of Ladismith the impressive Seweweekspoort links the Klein and Great Karoo. Glancing upwards from the winding gravel road the tortured folds of the sandstone mountains are awe inspiring and well worth the short detour. Seweweekspoort Peak, the highest in the province, rises up on your left. Addo

An Experience in Contrast The Addo Elephant National Park, with its core situated in the Sundays River Valley and stretching from the Karoo region north of the Zuurberg Mountain Range to the coast and islands of Algoa Bay of South Africa’s Eastern Cape Province, is the heartbeat of the GREATER ADDO ROUTE. Proclaimed in 1931 to protect eleven surviving Eastern Cape elephants, this amazing park consolidates the unique combination of land and seascapes. It is one of the most biologically diverse areas in the world, lying across five of the country’s seven biomes. It has one of the most densely populated elephant herds in the world and is home to the locally endemic flightless dung beetle (Circellum bacchus) and the endangered black rhinoceros (Diceros bicornis bicornis) The famous Alexandria dune fields in the South, are the longest and widest coastal dunes in the southern hemisphere, and it is here where the park inherits the whale and shark, making the park one of the rare Big 7 destinations internationally. Here among the dunes are the less well known species such as the endemic dune grasshopper Acrotylus hirsutus, the pygmy hairy-footed gerbil Gerbillus paeba exilis, the Damara Tern and the African Black Oystercatcher as well as many more. The Greater Addo Route circles this unique South African Destination and includes the villages of Addo, Colchester, Canonville, Kirkwood and Paterson. Quality graded accommodation in the form of luxury lodges, guesthouses, B&B’s, self catering and camping facilities are available throughout the route. The visitor can opt for relaxed home stays, luxury spas, comfortable colonial country houses or basic backpacker accommodation complimented by guided tours and safaris, ferry rides, horse trails, hiking trails, 4 x 4 and off road / adventure facilities with visits to conservation and community projects also offered. The Greater Addo Route is 100% malaria free and offers some of the best and easily accessible Big 5 and Big 7 game viewing in South Africa.
