New Translation of a Theatre Classic
An Actor’s Work on a Role Konstantin Stanislavski Translated by Jean Benedetti
O
riginally published over half a century ago as Creating a Role (978-0-87830-981-8), this book became the third in a trilogy – after An Actor Prepares and Building a Character, which are now combined in a newly translated volume called An Actor’s Work. In these books, now foundational texts for actor training, Stanislavski set out his psychological, physical and practical vision of actor training. An Actor’s Work on a Role is Konstantin Stanislavski’s classic exploration of the rehearsal process, applying the techniques of his seminal actor training system to the task of bringing life and truth to one’s role.
• Modern translation of Stanislavski's classic text Creating a Role • Edited and translated by one of the world's leading names in the field
This new translation from renowned writer and critic Jean Benedetti not only includes Stanislavski’s original teachings, but is also furnished with invaluable supplementary material in the shape of transcripts and notes from the rehearsals themselves, reconfirming “The System” as the cornerstone of actor training.
• Includes additional material not included in original translation, useful to students and actors-in-training
Konstantin Stanislavski was the co-founder of the Moscow Art Theatre, which took the international theatre world by storm when he began producing the plays of Anton Chekhov in 1898. He is the author of My Life in Art (978-0-87830-550-6; 2008, 978-0-415-43657-1); An Actor Prepares (978-0-87830-983-2); Building a Character (978-0-87830-982-5); and Creating a Role (978-0-87830-981-8). Jean Benedetti is the author of many books about acting and Stanislavski, including The Art of the Actor (2005); Stanislavski: An Introduction (2E; 2004); and Stanislavski and the Actor (1998). Initially working as an actor, director and television writer, he turned to teaching and became the Principle of Rose Bruford College, a highly respected British drama school.

New In Paperback!
An Actor’s Work A Student’s Diary Konstantin Stanislavski Translated by Jean Benedetti
T
his exciting new translation of Stanislavski’s landmark work on acting, formerly known as An Actor’s Work and Building a Character, invites the wholesale reconsideration of Stanislavski’s contributions to acting.
Stanislavski’s “system” has dominated actortraining in the West since his writings were first translated into English in the 1920s and 30s. His systematic attempt to outline a psycho-physical technique for acting single-handedly revolutionized standards of acting in the theatre and influenced everyone from Marlon Brando to Sean Penn. Until now, readers and students have had to contend with inaccurate, misleading and difficultto-read English-language versions. Some of the mistranslations have resulted in profound distortions in the way his system has been interpreted and taught. At last, Jean Benedetti has succeeded in translating Stanislavski’s huge manual into a lively, fascinating and accurate text in English. He has remained faithful to the author’s original intentions and in a colloquial and readable style for today’s actors. The result is a major contribution to the theatre and a service to one of the great innovators of the twentieth century.
• A new and updated translation of the classic bestsellers An Actor Prepares and Building a Character (both volumes published together, following Stanislavski’s original intention) “A lively new translation by Jean Benedetti...Stanislavski was provocative, controversial—and, as An Actor’s Work confirms, a genius.” —The Times of London
“Essential reading for anyone interested in acting, practically or academically, at all levels from schools to the industry.”
— Times Higher Educational Supplement
“...Jean Benedetti’s translation is fresh, immediate, highly readable, very witty, and, above all, accessible.”
Jean Benedetti is the author of many books about acting and Stanislavski, including The Art of the Actor (2005); Stanislavski: An Introduction (2E; 2004); and Stanislavski and the Actor (1998). Initially working as an actor, director and television writer, he turned to teaching and became the Principle of Rose Bruford College, still a highly respected British drama school.

Teaching Critical Thinking Practical Wisdom bell hooks
T
eaching Critical Thinking: Practical Wisdom is a big little book addressing the most compelling issues teachers in our nation face today. The last in her renowned teaching series, following Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom and Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope, it explores topics, issues, and a host of concerns that teachers and students have pleaded with hooks to address. The issues are varied and broad, ranging from whether it is possible to teach critical thinking; discussion of whether meaningful teaching can take place in a large classroom setting; issues of self esteem; the place of love in a classroom; and more.
• Complements bell hooks' previous teaching titles, Teaching to Transgress: Education as the Practice of Freedom and Teaching Community: A Pedagogy of Hope, which have sold a combined total of 80,000 copies • The last book in her "Teaching" trilogy • Addresses issues teachers and students have been wanting bell hooks to answer for years
In this collection of short essays, hooks directly addresses questions teachers pose. One professor requested that she speak to the practical issue of how it is black female professors can maintain positive authority in a classroom without being seen through the lens of negative racist, sexist stereotypes. Addressing questions of race, gender, and class in this work, hooks discusses the complex balance that allows us to teach, value, and learn from works written by racist and sexist authors. Highlighting the importance of reading, she insists on the primacy of free speech, a democratic education of literacy. Throughout these essays, she celebrates the transformative power of critical thinking. This is provocative, powerful, joyful intellectual work. bell hooks is a writer and critic who has taught most recently at Berea College in Kentucky, where she is Distinguished Professor in Residence. Among her many books are the feminist classic Ain’t I A Woman, the dialogue (with Cornel West) Breaking Bread, the children’s books Happy to Be Nappy and Be Boy Buzz, the memoir Bone Black (Holt), and the general interest titles All About Love, Rock My Soul, and Communion. She has published seven titles with Routledge: Belonging, We Real Cool, Where We Stand, Teaching to Transgress, Teaching Community, Outlaw Culture, and Reel to Real.

Authority and the Individual Bertrand Russell "...enormously worth reading." — Daily Telegraph
First published in 1961, Fact and Fiction is a collection of Bertrand Russell's essays that reflect on the books and writings that influenced his life, including fiction, essays on politics and education, divertissements and parables. Also broaching on the highly controversial issues of war and peace, it is in this classic collection that Russell states some of his most famous pronouncements on nuclear warfare and international relations. It is a remarkable book that provides valuable insight into the range of interests and depth of convictions of one of the world's greatest philosophers.
From Ancient Greek philosophy to the French Revolution to the modern welfare state, in Authority and the Individual Bertrand Russell tackles the perennial questions about the balance between authority and human freedom. Bertrand Russell was a leading British philosopher of the twentieth-century, who made major contributions to the area of logic and epistemology. Politically active and habitually outspoken, his ethical principles twice lead to imprisonment. The Routledge Classics series celebrates his legacy by publishing the following titles...
The Prospects of Industrial Civilization Bertrand Russell First published in 1923, The Prospects of Industrial Civilization is considered the most ambitious of Bertrand Russell’s works on modern society. It offers a rare glimpse into often-ignored subtleties of his political thought and in it he argues that industrialism is a threat to human freedom, since it is fundamentally linked with nationalism. His proposal for one government for the whole world as the ultimate solution, along with his argument that the global village and prevailing political democracy should be its eventual results, is both provocative and thoroughly engaging.

"...Bertrand Russell's eloquent and lucid analyses and warnings... should find a prominent place in the thinking of those who hope to reverse the seemingly inexorable drive towards self-destruction." — Noam Chomsky
Written at the height of the Cold War in 1959, Common Sense and Nuclear Warfare was published in an effort "to prevent the catastrophe which would resolute from a large scale H-bomb war". Bertrand Russell's staunch anti-war stance is made very clear in this highly controversial text, which outlines his sharp insights into the threat of nuclear conflict and what should be done to avoid it. Freedom and Organization
Human Society in Ethics and Politics
Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russell
Freedom and Organization, is considered to be Bertrand Russell's major work on political history. It traces the main causes of political change during a period of one hundred years, which he argues were predominantly influenced by three major elements — economic technique, political theory and certain significant individuals. In the witty, approachable style that has made Bertrand Russell's works so revered, he explores in detail the major forces and events that shaped the nineteenth century.

"The most careful and systematic discussion of the philosophy of ethics every written." — Herald Tribune
First published in 1954, Human Society in Ethics and Politics is Bertrand Russell's last full account of his ethical and political positions relating to both politics and religion. Ethics, he argues, are necessary to man because of the conflict between intelligence and impulse. Politics and ethics are the means by which we as a society and as individuals become socially purposeful and moral codes inculcate our rules of action.

Why Men Fight Bertrand Russell Also published under the title of Principals of Social Reconstruction, and written in response to the devastation of World War I, Why Men Fight lays out Bertrand Russell’s ideas on war, pacifism, reason, impulse, and personal liberty. He argues that the individualistic approach of traditional liberalism has reached its limits and that when individuals live passionately, they will have no desire for war or killing. Conversely, excessive restraint or reason causes us to live unnaturally and with hostility toward those who are unlike ourselves. This formidable work greatly contributed to Russell's fame as a formidable social critic and anti-war activist.

Principles of Mathematics
The Philosophy of Logical Atomism
Bertrand Russell
Edited by Bertrand Russell
First published in 1903, Principles of Mathematics was Bertrand Russell's first major work in print. In this groundbreaking and important work, Bertrand Russell argues that mathematics and logic are, in fact, identical and what is commonly called mathematics is simply later deductions from logical premises. Highly influential and engaging, this important work led to Russell's dominance of analytical logic on western philosophy in the twentieth century.
Logical Atomism is a philosophy that sought to account for the world in all its various aspects by relating it to the structure of the language in which we articulate information. In The Philosophy of Logical Atomism, Russell, with input from his young student Ludwig Wittgenstein, developed the concept and argues for a reformed language based on pure logic.

Thinkers for Architects This original series offers quick, clear introductions to key thinkers who have written about architecture and whose work can yield insights for designers. Each book reflects upon what a thinker has to offer for architects, locates their architectural thinking in the context of their work, introduces significant texts, helps decode terms and provides quick reference for further reading. If you find theoretical writing on architecture difficult, or simply don't know where to begin, this series will be indispensable.
“Watching them (the very astute and learned authors of this series) try to reduce these giants of 20th-century thought, into 100 page pamphlets is one of the most intriguing aspects of this valuable addition to any studio space or computer lab.” — Ian Volner, Architectural Record, May 2008
Bhabha for Architects Felipe Hernandez
T
he work of Homi K. Bhabha has permeated into numerous publications which use postcolonial discourse as a means to analyze architectural practices in previously colonized contexts. Bhabha’s use of "space" has made his work highly appealing to architects and architectural theorists. This introductory book, specifically for architects, focuses on Bhabha's seminal book The Location of Culture and reveals how his work contributes to architectural theory and the study of contemporary architectures in general. Felipe Hernandez is an architect and Lecturer in Architectural Design, History and Theory at the University of Liverpool. He has taught at the Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL), The Universities of Nottingham, Sheffield and East London as well as at the School of Art and Design of Nottingham Trent University. Felipe Hernandez has published extensively on postcolonial architecture, architectural identity and transculturation.

Merleau-Ponty for Architects Jonathan Hale
T
he work of Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) has influenced the design work of many architects. He suggested that the value of people's experience of the world gained through their immediate bodily engagement with it remains greater than the value of understanding gleaned through abstract mathematical, scientific or technological systems. This book summarizes what Merleau-Ponty has to offer specifically for architects. It locates his architectural thinking in the context of his work, introduces key texts, helps decode difficult terms and provides quick reference for further reading. Jonathan Hale is an architect and an Associate Professor in Architecture at the University of Nottingham. He is the author of numerous books including Building Ideas: An introduction to architectural theory (Wiley 2000) and Ends Middles Beginnings: Edward Cullinan Architects (Black Dog 2005), among others.

Neville Chamberlain Nick Smart
I
nfamous for his declaration of having achieved "Peace for our time," Neville Chamberlain has often been portrayed as a social reformer out of sync with the times in which he lived. In this new biography, Nick Smart thoughtfully examines Chamberlain’s life, career, achievements, and failures. Stressing that the system in which Chamberlain worked had more impact on history than anything he did personally, Smart describes a man who was hard-working but ultimately out of his depth, destined to be remembered in history as the fall-guy to Winston Churchill's hero. Nick Smart is Lecturer in History at the University of Plymouth.

Kwanzaa Black Power and the Making of the African-American Holiday Tradition Keith A. Mayes
S
ince 1966, Kwanzaa has been celebrated as an annual recognition of cultural pride in the AfricanAmerican community. But how did this holiday originate, and what is its broader cultural significance? Kwanzaa: Black Power and the Making of the African-American Holiday Tradition explores the political beginning and later expansion of Kwanzaa, from its start as a Black Power holiday, to its current place as one of the most mainstream of the black holiday traditions. Keith Mayes gives an accessible and definitive account of the movements and individuals that pushed to make this annual celebration a reality, and shows how African-Americans brought the black freedom struggle to the American calendar. Clear and thoughtful, Kwanzaa is the perfect introduction to what is now the quintessential AfricanAmerican holiday.
"A pioneering work about a deeply important holiday."
Keith A. Mayes is Assistant Professor of History and AfricanAmerican and African Studies at the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.

National Security in the Obama Administration Reassessing the Bush Doctrine Stanley A. Renshon
T
he Bush Doctrine is dead! At least that's what critics hope. But while new U.S. national security challenges emerge, many post–9/11 threats still persist and the policies of George W. Bush offer one set of strategic answers for how President Obama can confront those dangers. Through an examination of psychology as much as policy, Renshon, in the first comparative analysis of the Bush Doctrine and the developing Obama Doctrine, analyzes the range of national security issues Obama will face and the political divisions that permeate U.S. national security debates. It is essential reading for anyone looking to understand how presidents assess security risks generally and how Obama specifically is likely to adapt the Bush Doctrine to his own worldview. “With strong arguments and a penetrating view of the world, this is a stimulating and important book.” — Robert Jervis, Columbia University
Stanley A. Renshon is a Professor of Political Science at the City University of New York Graduate Center. He is the author of over ninety articles and fourteen books and is a certified psychoanalyst.

hat can immigration policy and civil society groups’ activity in this arena tell us about the health of democracy in the United States? In this book, Robert Koulish examines how immigration has assumed “canary in the coal mine” status for the health of American democracy. While immigration embodies America's rhetorical commitment to democracy, it also showcases abysmal failures in democratic practice. Immigration and American Democracy examines these failures in terms of state sovereignty, neoliberalism, and surveillance-based techniques of social control.
Robert Koulish is Associate Professor of Law Society at Philadelphia University.

What Every Man Should Know About Being a Dad David Cohen, Writer, psychologist and film maker
W
ritten by psychologist and father of two, David Cohen, this book provides a guide for men on how to be a good dad and a supportive partner. Dealing directly with the key issues and the many stresses that fathers can face, it looks at the psychological research on child development, parenting and fathering in particular. It examines such thorny topics as step-fatherhood, the changing relationship between partners and sex after babies. It also offers valuable advice on problems all dads will face—how to bond, how to provide sensible discipline, learning to play and managing teenage tantrums and traumas. Written in a light and anecdotal style, this book tells men everything they need to know about being a dad. David Cohen trained as a psychologist and has worked as a writer and film maker. He set up Psychology News as a magazine which has since become a film and TV production company as well as a publisher. He is a father and a step-father.
• Unlike the competitors, written by a psychologist and grounded in research • Timely publication: the importance of fathers in children’s lives is becoming more and more prominent, but men are not taught how to become fathers

Psychotherapy
The Creative Therapist
DVD
The Art of Awakening a Session Bradford Keeney, Department of Transformative Inquiry, California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco, USA
T
he Creative Therapist explores the theory and practice of invigorating therapy with creativity in order to make it vibrant, meaningful, and successful. Bradford Keeney takes readers through his own extensive experiences in using creativity with clients from all over the world and makes the case that inspiration and inventiveness, rather than theory, method, technique, or research, are what awaken meaningful and transformative therapy.
"I love this book! Here artistry is brought back to the practice of psychotherapy. It is a delight to read, and to see, therapy done in creative ways that so clearly carry forth the essence of Milton H. Erickson's work. I celebrate the arrival of this vital and vitally alive book and believe it can help each of us access, trust, and incorporate the deepest sources of creative wisdom we carry within"
Keeney presents a conceptual framework that provides an understanding of how to go outside habituated ways of therapy in order to bring forth new and innovative possibilities. This basic structure is based on the outline of a three-part theatrical play, mirroring the transformation of the client as well as the therapist. Practical guidelines detail how to initiate and implement novel contributions to any therapeutic situation. Therapists and other mental health professionals will take delight in their life's work after reading this book. The book is accompanied by a DVD that shows footage of several of the therapy sessions described in the text. Bradford Keeney, PhD, is a professor at the department of transformative inquiry, California Institute of Integral Studies, San Francisco, and clinical director at the Center for Children and Families, Monroe, Louisiana (www.thecreativetherapist.com). He has served distinguished careers as a social cybernetician, systemic therapist, anthropologist of cultural healing traditions, conversation analyst, improvisational performer, and creative consultant. He is the originator of several orientations to psychotherapy and has written many critically acclaimed books for the popular press.
— From the Preface by Betty Alice Erickson, international teacher of psychotherapy and co-editor, Milton H. Erickson, M.D.: An American Healer
"This book is a breath of fresh air that reminds us of what therapy is really about, of the healing power of relationships and of the beauty of metaphors and symbols. The stories are unforgettable. A great read for therapists and for all those interested in improving their life."

Religion
2nd Edition
Why Gods Persist A Scientific Approach to Religion Robert Hinde "Why Gods Persist is exceptionally notable as a scholarly, balanced, yet easily readable account of the true meaning of religion insofar as we can objectively understand it at the present time. It is the right antidote for extremism on both ends— fanatic dogmatism and the call to purge religion altogether." — Edward O. Wilson, Harvard University

• New contribution to the debate on religion begun by Christopher Hitchens and Richard Dawkins • Explains scientific understanding of the persistence of belief in accessible language
hat is it about religion that appeals to people? Why do religions and religious beliefs persist in the face of increasing secularization, harsh criticism and even political persecution? Distinguished scientist Robert Hinde argues that it is not enough simply to criticize religion, we must understand it—not only how it does so much harm and causes so much conflict, but also how it brings comfort to many. Hinde draws on a wide range of psychological, developmental and evolutionary research to explore this fascinating question. He argues that every aspect of religion comes from the nature of humankind and of the circumstances we have constructed. Robert Hinde is a Professor Emeritus and former Master of St John's College, Cambridge. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society, Foreign Honorary Member of the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and Honorary Foreign Associate of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences.

Stanislavsky in America An Actor’s Workbook Mel Gordon Stanislavsky in America explores the extraordinary legacy that Constantin Stanislavsky’s system of actortraining has left on acting in the US. Mel Gordon outlines the journey of Stanislavsky’s theories through twentieth century American history, from the early US tours of the Moscow Art Theatre to the ongoing impact of “The System” on modern American acting. This fascinating study by a leading theatre critic and practitioner provides hundreds of original acting exercises, used by the pivotal US figures who developed his teachings, such as Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler and Bobby Lewis. By going back to these primary sources, Gordon cuts through the myths and misapprehensions which have built up over time.

The Concept of Mind 60th Anniversary Edition Gilbert Ryle Introduction by Julia Tanney The Concept of Mind is a radical attempt to redraw the categories by which the mind had been traditionally understood. Famously describing the idea of a non-physical mind attached to a physical body as tantamount to a “ghost in the machine,” Ryle argues that the language used to describe the relationship between mind and body amounts to a massive “category mistake.” Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was one of the dominant figures in twentieth-century philosophy of mind. He was Waynflete Professor of metaphysical philosophy at Oxford and was editor of the journal Mind for nearly twenty-five years. A Theory of Race Joshua Glasgow Social commentators have long asked whether racial categories should be conserved or eliminated from our practices, discourse, institutions, and perhaps even private thoughts. In A Theory of Race, Joshua Glasgow argues that this set of choices unnecessarily presents us with too few options. Using both traditional philosophical tools and recent psychological research to investigate folk understandings of race, Glasgow argues that, as ordinarily conceived, race is an illusion. However, our pressing need to speak to and make sense of social life requires that we employ something like racial discourse. These competing pressures, Glasgow maintains, ultimately require us to stop conceptualizing race as something biological, and instead understand it as an entirely social phenomenon.
