The Laws that Shaped America Fifteen Acts of Congress and Their Lasting Impact Dennis W. Johnson
F
or better and sometimes for ill, Congress is a reflection of the aspirations, wants, and priorities of the American people. It reflects the kaleidoscope of special interests and service to others, of favors sought and sacrifices made. During each two-year session of Congress, thousands of pieces of legislation are proposed, many hundreds are given serious consideration, but far fewer are eventually enacted into law. Throughout its history, Congress has churned out nearly forty thousand pieces of legislation. Most enactments have limited impact, affect few, and are quietly forgotten in the flow of legislative activity. However, a small number of laws has risen to the level of historical consequence. These are the laws that have shaped America and they are the subject of this book.
"I have greatly enjoyed reading The Laws that Shaped America, a fast-moving narrative, with colorfully drawn settings and nuanced descriptions of major players. Dennis Johnson addresses major themes fundamental to lawmaking and representative democracy while effectively illustrating the inherent frustration, sluggishness, complexity, and unpredictability of the legislative process. He has brilliantly mastered a vast amount of source material with proper tone, balance, and emphasis. I learned a great deal from this book."
Which pieces of legislation were the most significant for the development of the nation? Which laws so affected us that we could not imagine how our lives would be without them? Dennis Johnson tells the story of fifteen major laws enacted over the course of two centuries of American democracy—from the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to the Social Security Act, from Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854 to the Civil Rights Act 1964. For each, he looks at the forces and circumstances that led to its enactment—the tempestuous political struggles in crafting their language, the political players and the impact of the legislation and its place in American history. Dennis W. Johnson is Professor and former Associate Dean of the George Washington University Graduate School of Political Management, Washington, D.C. He is the author of Congress Online: Bridging the Gap between Citizens and their Representatives (2004) and No Place for Amateurs (Second Edition, 2007), both published by Routledge.

What Should I Believe? Why our Beliefs about the Nature of Death and the Purpose of Life Dominate our Lives Dorothy Rowe, Clinical Psychologist
E
minent psychologist and bestselling author Dorothy Rowe explores how our beliefs about death influence the way we live. Everyone has to face the dilemma that we all die, but no one is sure what death actually is. In a world where religion is increasingly used as a political power, it affects us all, whether we are religious or not. We want to make up our own minds about what we believe, but this is difficult. All religions promise to overcome death, but no set of religious or philosophical beliefs ensures that our lives are always happy and secure.
“Dorothy Rowe brings a refreshingly sane voice to the fraught, confusing but vital discussion of our beliefs about life, death and reality. Looking past the content of beliefs, she asks why people believe as they do and describes with wonderful lucidity how deep-seated emotions shape our ideas about life and these, in turn, mold our experience of it. This book is a timely reminder that we choose what we believe and how we believe it, and a passionate, liberating argument for self-awareness.”
Through all this turmoil comes Dorothy Rowe's calm, clear voice. She separates the political from the personal, the power-seeking from the compassionate. She suggests that instead of forcing our beliefs onto other people as a defense against feelings of worthlessness, we can live at peace with ourselves and others, find inner strength without depending on supernatural powers, and face life with courage and optimism. Dorothy Rowe is a psychologist and the author of 13 books, including the worldwide best seller Depression: The Way Out of Your Prison. She is Australian and divides her time between London and Sydney.

Unpopular Essays Bertrand Russell "An intellectual treat…the delight of this book lies in that combination of wit with perception, and of width of view with ease of expression for which Russell made himself known." — Financial Times
A classic collection of Bertrand Russell's more controversial works, reaffirming his staunch liberal values, Unpopular Essays is one of Russell's most characteristic and self-revealing books. Written to “combat…the growth in Dogmatism,” on first publication in 1950 it met with critical acclaim and a wide readership and has since become one of his most accessible and popular books.

An Outline of Philosophy Bertrand Russell "A book which we cannot afford to miss if we think at all." — The Spectator
In his controversial book An Outline of Philosophy, first published in 1927, Russell argues that humanity demands consideration solely as the instrument by which we acquire knowledge of the universe. From our inner-world to the outer-world, from our physical world to the universe, his argument separates modern scientific knowledge and our "seeming" consciousness. These innovative perspectives on philosophy made a significant contribution to the discourse on the meaning, relevance and function of philosophy which continues to this day.

Human Knowledge: Its Scope and Limits Bertrand Russell "The nearest thing to a systematic philosophy written by one who does not believe in systems of philosophy. Its scope is encyclopedic…a joy to read." —New York Times
How do we know what we “know”? How did we—as individuals and as a society—come to accept certain knowledge as fact? In Human Knowledge, Russell questions the reliability of our assumptions on knowledge. This brilliant and controversial work investigates the relationship between "individual" and "scientific" knowledge. First published in 1948, this provocative work contributed significantly to an explosive intellectual discourse that continues to this day.

Bertrand Russell was a leading British philosopher of the twentieth-century, who made major contributions to the area of logic and epistemology. Politically active and habitually outspoken, his ethical principles twice lead to imprisonment. The Routledge Classics series celebrates his legacy by publishing the following titles...
Mortals and Others Bertrand Russell Between 1931 and 1935, Bertrand Russell contributed some 156 essays to the literary pages of the American newspaper New York American. These were often fun, humorous observations on the very real issues of the day, such as the Depression, the rise of Nazism and Prohibition, to more perennial themes such as love, parenthood, education and friendship. Available for the first time in the Routledge Classics series in a single volume, this pithy, provocative and often-personal collection of essays brings together the very best of Russell's many contributions to the New York American, and proves just as engaging for today's readers as they were in the 1930s.

Our Knowledge of the External World
Philosophical Essays
Bertrand Russell
First published in 1910, Philosophical Essays is one of Bertrand Russell's earliest works and marks an important period in the evolution of thought of one of the world's most influential thinkers. This selection of seven essays displays Russell’s incisiveness and brilliance of exposition in the examination of ethical subjects and the nature of truth. Insightful and highly accessible, these essays are as illuminating today as they were on first publication.
"It is in every sense an epoch-making book: one that has been needed and expected for years." —Cambridge Magazine
Our Knowledge of the External World is a compilation of lectures Bertrand Russell delivered in which he questions the very relevance and legitimacy of philosophy. In it he questions the means in which we have come to understand our physical world. This is an explosive and controversial work that illustrates instances where the claims of philosophers have been excessive, and examines why their achievements have not been greater.

The Scientific Outlook Bertrand Russell According to Bertrand Russell, science is knowledge, that which seeks general laws connecting a number of particular facts. It is, he argues, far superior to art, where much of the knowledge is intangible and assumed. In The Scientific Outlook, Russell delivers one of his most important works, exploring the nature and scope of scientific knowledge, the increased power over nature that science affords and the changes in the lives of human beings that result from new forms of science. Insightful and accessible, this impressive work sees Russell at his very best.

Bertrand Russell’s Best
Marriage and Morals
Bertrand Russell
Bertrand Russell
"the cream of the great man's satire, witty, pungent quotes from a variety of writings."
Controversial and remarkably forward thinking, in Marriage and Morals, Russell innovatively sets out a new morality less distorting to human personality but nonetheless careful of social needs. From the origin of marriage to the value of a healthy sex life, from the influence of religion to the possibilities of eugenics, Russell explores the changing role of marriage and codes of sexual ethics. The influence of this great work has turned it into a worthy classic.
—Evening News
Well-known for his profound knowledge and controversial approach to myriad of different issues and subjects such as sex, marriage, religion, education and politics, Russell's prolific works also exhibit great intellectual wit and humor. First published in 1958, Bertrand Russell's Best is a delightfully funny and entertaining book, and a striking testament to the remarkable life work and wit of Bertrand Russell.

The West From the Dark Age to the Enlightenment Christopher Tadgell
T
he fourth book in the Architecture in Context series, this is an unprecedented study of European Architecture in the Middle Ages, from the destruction of Rome by northern barbarians to the rediscovery of Classical values and the rebirth of humanism in 15th-century Italy. Christopher Tadgell covers the major architectural traditions of the period, from the Romanesque architecture of the 9th and 10th centuries, to the evolution of the Gothic which heralded new, structurally daring architecture. The book ends with the Italian rediscovery of Classical ideas and ideals and the emergence of the great Renaissance theorists and architects, including Brunelleschi, Alberti, and Bramante.
Series: Architecture in Context Routledge April 2009: 7-1/4 x 8-1/2: 912pp Hb: 978-0-415-40754-0: $99.95/V Architecture
• 2,000 color photos and 800 drawings • Handy portable size
With more than two thousand images, including many plans, The West is a beautiful, single-volume guide to the history of architecture in this period, covering the whole of Europe from Ireland to Russia and placing architectural developments within their political, technological, artistic and intellectual contexts.
Chistopher Tadgell studied art history at the Courtauld Institute in London and subsequently taught architectural history for almost thirty years before devoting himself full-time to writing and research, traveling worldwide to examine and photograph buildings from every tradition and period. He is a Trustee of the World Monuments Fund, a Fellow of the Society of Antiquities and a member of both the British and American Societies of Architectural History. His History of Architecture in India is the definitive one-volume account, while his publications on French architecture include the standard account in Baroque and Rococo Architecture and Decoration.

The Routledge Atlas of the Holocaust Martin Gilbert
T
he harrowing history of the Nazi attempt to destroy the Jews of Europe during the Second World War is illustrated in this series of 333 detailed and graphic maps.
The maps, and the text and photographs that accompany them, vividly depict the fate of the Jews between 1933 and 1945, while also setting the chronological story in the wider context of the war itself. The maps include:
• historical background: from the effects of anti-Jewish violence between 1880 and 1933 to the geography of the existing Jewish communities before the advent of the Nazis • the beginning of the violence - from the destruction of the synagogues in November 1938 to Jewish migrations and deportations, and the establishment of the concentration camps and death camps throughout German-dominated Europe • the spread of Nazi rule - the fate of the Jews throughout Europe including Germany, Austria, Poland, Greece, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria, Russia, Denmark, Norway, France, Holland, Belgium, Italy, and the Baltic States
• 15 new maps "A classic of Holocaust studies. No other single volume quite conveys both the sheer scale of the Holocaust, and the depth of individual tragedy."
• Jewish revolts and resistance; and the work of Christians in saving Jews • the death marches, the advance of the Allies to the liberation of the camps, the fate of the survivors, and the final death toll. This revised edition includes a new section which gives an insight into the layout and organization of some of the most significant places of the Holocaust, including Auschwitz, Treblinka and the Warsaw Ghetto, which will be especially useful to those visiting the sites.
Sir Martin Gilbert is one of the leading historians of his generation. Jews and Judaism in World History Howard N. Lupovitch
J
ews and Judaism in World History presents Jewish history not simply as the history of Judaism, but also as the development of a social structure, polity, and a culture with religious and non-religious dimensions. It captures both the diverse political, social, and cultural contexts in which Jewish history unfolded and the continuities that traversed the Jewish world from Persia to the Pacific. Incorporating and engaging with the most up to date scholarship and exploring overarching themes in a broad, comparative context, Howard N. Lupovitch demonstrates the intimate and inexorable nexus between Jewish and World History.
Howard N. Lupovitch is Associate Professor in Jewish Studies in the History department at Colby College.

American Soldiers in Iraq McSoldiers or Innovative Professionals? Morten G. Ender
A
merican Soldiers in Iraq offers a unique sociological snapshot of American soldiers in Iraq, analyzing their collective narratives in relation to the military sociology tradition. The book has a three-fold purpose: to offer a window on the perspective of American soldiers in Iraq; to give a representation of their experience; and to assess diversity in the all-volunteer forces making up the US Army. It provides a social psychological perspective on soldiers’ experiences, exploring issues such as boredom, morale, satisfaction, preparation, workday, attitudes, the potential impact of the war, and the experiences of women. In addition, it includes chapters on the class-bias thesis of casualties and a chapter on soldier experiences with efficiency, control, predictability, calculability, rationality, and creativity in Iraq. The heart of American Soldiers in Iraq captures the experiences of American soldiers deployed to Operation Iraqi Freedom at the height of the conflict in a way unprecedented in the literature to date.
• First examination of the collective experience of US soldiers in Iraq

Walking Away from Terrorism Accounts of Disengagement from Radical and Extremist Movements John Horgan
W
alking Away from Terrorism focuses on identifying the tipping points for disengagement from terrorism, and is informed by the detailed, illuminating and sometimes extraordinary accounts that the terrorists themselves offer about the reasons why they left terrorism behind. The book explores four major issues: • Current knowledge on disengagement and de-radicalization • What terrorists themselves say about their experiences of disengagement • What lessons and implications can be learned from accounts of disengagement • What implications effective counterterrorism initiatives have for policy, law enforcement, intelligence, civil society and other relevant parties.
• Discusses such terrorist groups as Hamas, Al Qaeda, The Tamil Tigers, The Ulster Volunteer Force, and Oglaigh na hEireann (a.k.a. The Real IRA)
The book provides a model of disengagement and de-radicalization; a detailed analysis of the implications of the model for informing responses; and a strategic, systematically presented, point-by-point and multi-level guide for policy makers for facilitating de-radicalization processes at a variety of political, social and legal levels. John Horgan is Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for the Study of Terrorism and Political Violence, University of St. Andrews, where he is also Lecturer in International Relations. Handmade Electronic Music The Art of Hardware Hacking Nicolas Collins Handmade Electronic Music: The Art of Hardware Hacking provides a long-needed, practical, and engaging introduction for students of electronic music, sound-art and circuit bending. Designed for practitioners and students of electronic art, it provides a guided tour through the world of electronics, encouraging artists to get to know the inner workings of basic electronic devices so they can creatively use them for their own ends. Hardware hacking—creatively repurposing electronic devices for artistic purposes—has produced a steadily growing and energetic subculture of hobbyists, tinkerers, mixed-media artists, and experimental musicians. A recent circuit bending post on YouTube has reached more than 500,000 views. Meanwhile, hacking workshops like the Bent Festival are now held in multiple cities over several days throughout the country. Author Nicolas Collins appealed to this eclectic group of enthusiasts and Handmade Electronic Music is now in its second edition. The book immediately found its way into the hands of many, including prestigious music schools. It introduces the basic practical circuitry while instructing the student in basic electronic principles, always from the practical point of view of an artist. Handmade Electronic Music teaches a style of intuitive and sensual experimentation that has been lost in this day of prefabricated electronic musical instruments whose inner workings are not open to experimentation. This revised, expanded second edition includes a 90-minute DVD with 87 video clips of projects along with 20 audio tracks submitted by artists around the world, as well as the 13 video tutorials by the author. Further enhancements include additional projects, photographs, diagrams and illustrations. It has also been updated to account for technological changes since the first edition.
• Praise for the first edition: “Nicolas Collins wants to tear apart your CD player...” —Wired Magazine
“Here we have, at last, an electronics book that caters to people who have ideas first, and electronics second. A former technician to some of the last century’s most imaginative experimental composers, Collins offers a splendidly integrative look into the history of ‘sound art,’ basic electronics, and junk revisioning.” —Make Magazine
Nicolas Collins, an active composer and performer of electronic music, is a Professor of Sound at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has led Hacking workshops around the world, from Beijing to Brussels, and has worked with John Cage, Alvin Lucier, David Tudor, and many other master of modern music.

60th Anniversary Edition
The Concept of Mind Gilbert Ryle Introduction by Julia Tanney
F
irst published in 1949, The Concept of Mind is a classic text in twentieth-century philosophy, setting the agenda for philosophy of mind for the next fifty years. This 60th Anniversary edition includes a substantial commentary by Julia Tanney, a prominent figure in the study of Ryle's work. The Concept of Mind is a radical attempt to redraw the categories by which the mind had been traditionally understood. Famously describing the idea of a non-physical mind attached to a physical body as tantamount to a “ghost in the machine,” Ryle argues that the language used to describe the relationship between mind and body amounts to a massive "category mistake." A classic work of philosophy, psychology and literature, The Concept of Mind is essential reading for anyone interested in the mind and human behavior.
• Ryle is considered one of the founding fathers of analytic philosophy • Coincides with the reissue of his two-volume collected papers
Gilbert Ryle (1900-1976) was one of the dominant figures in twentieth-century philosophy of mind. He was Waynflete Professor of metaphysical philosophy at Oxford and was editor of the journal Mind for nearly twenty-five years.

The Future of Political Science 100 Perspectives Edited by Gary King, Kay Leham Schlozman, and Norman Nie
T
his book contains some of the newest, most exciting ideas now percolating among political scientists, from hallway conversations to conference room discussions. To spur future research, enrich classroom teaching, and direct non-specialist attention to cutting-edge ideas, a distinguished group of authors from various parts of this sprawling and pluralistic discipline has each contributed a brief essay about a single novel or insufficiently appreciated idea on some aspect of political science. The one hundred essays are concise, no more than a few pages apiece, and informal. While the contributions are highly diverse, readers can find serendipitous connections across the volume, tracing echoes as well as diametrically opposed points of view. This book offers compelling points of departure for everyone who is concerned about political science. Gary King is David Florence Professor of Government at Harvard University. Kay Leham Schlozman is J. Joseph Moakley Professor of Political Science at Boston College. Norman Nie is Research Professor of Political Science at Stanford University and Professor Emeritus at University of Chicago.

The Democracy Advantage How Democracies Promote Prosperity and Peace Morton H. Halperin, Joseph T. Siegle, and Michael M. Weinstein Foreword by George Soros
T
he Democracy Advantage provides an empirically-grounded analysis of the consistently positive development track record of poor countries with democratic governments versus those with more oppressive political systems. Building on idea of peace, the authors connect the dots of how democracy and development contribute to lower levels of intrastate conflict and popular support for extremist ideologies. The author's policy recommendations provide an evenly argued liberal internationalist justification for making democracy a central feature of U.S. foreign policy. This freshly revised edition features updated examples and data throughout. • Hardback (978-0-415-95052-7) published in 2004. • Praise for the Hardback “This valuable and timely volume…is a treasury of evidence that freedom is not only right—it works.” — Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State

The Industrial Vagina The Political Economy of the Global Sex Trade Sheila Jeffreys
T
he industrialization of prostitution and the sex trade has created a multibillion-dollar global market, involving millions of women, that makes a substantial contribution to national and global economies. The Industrial Vagina examines how prostitution and other aspects of the sex industry have moved from being small-scale, clandestine, and socially despised practices to become very profitable legitimate market sectors that are being legalized and decriminalized by governments. Sheila Jeffreys demonstrates how prostitution has been globalized through an examination of: • the growth of pornography and its new global reach • the boom in adult shops, strip clubs and escort agencies • military prostitution and sexual violence in war • marriage and the mail order bride industry • the rise in sex tourism and trafficking in women. "The Industrial Vagina is an insightful analysis into the globalization and industrialization of the modern sex industry…This book opens a window on global sexual exploitation and the institutions that support it." — Janice G. Parenting with Reason Evidence-based Approaches to being a Parent Esther Yoder Strahan, Wallace E. Dixon and Jerry Burton Banks
T
his book cuts through the masses of often confusing and contradictory advice found in parenting self-help books to provide a rich common-sense manual on “evidence-based parenting”. Grounded in the best research available, it provides parents with the evidence to back up the “tough parenting decisions” that they face. The authors, who are parents themselves, bring together their expert knowledge gained through the practice of evidence-based medicine in such areas as child intellectual and language development, childhood psychological problems and child temperament development, to look at such hot-button questions as; “Can immunizations lead to autism?” “How can I get my baby to sleep through the night?” and “What can I do to stimulate my child's brain development?” The authors de-bunk common myths about parenting, such as the notion that a healthy baby needs to be able to breastfeed at will throughout the night, or the idea that children who are adopted need specialized counseling. They also examine such issues as how media violence affects children's behavior, how a parent's emotional disorder affects a child, what the scientific evidence is for and against circumcision of young boys, and how divorce and adoption affect a child's development. Esther Strahan earned her doctorate in Clinical Psychology at Purdue University and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Behavioral Medicine at Bowling Green State University. She taught for a decade as a professor and chair of the department of Psychology at Heidelberg College, combined with part-time clinical practice. She has recently moved into full-time clinical practice. Wallace E. Dixon is Professor and Chair of the Psychology Department at East Tennessee State University, where he studies cognitive, language and temperament development in children. He has published extensively in international scholarly journals. J. Burton Banks is a former associative professor of family medicine at East Tennessee State University. Dr. Banks completed undergraduate training at Wake Forest University, and completed his medical and specialty training at East Carolina University School of Medicine. Dr. Banks’ clinical interests include children’s health and care of child abuse victims. Dr. Banks now practices medicine in southwest Virginia.

In Philosophy Through Video Games, Jon Cogburn and Mark Silcox investigate the aesthetic appeal of video games, their effect on our morals, the insights they give us into our understanding of perceptual knowledge, personal identity, artificial intelligence and the very meaning of life itself, arguing that video games are popular precisely because that they engage with longstanding philosophical problems. Renaissance Theory Edited by James Elkins and Robert Williams Renaissance Theory presents an animated conversation among art historians about the optimal ways of conceptualizing Renaissance art, and the links between Renaissance art and contemporary art and theory. This is the first discussion of its kind, involving not only questions within Renaissance scholarship, but issues of concern to art historians and critics in all fields. Organized as a virtual roundtable discussion, the contributors discuss rifts and disagreements about how to understand the Renaissance and debate the principal texts and authors of the last thirty years who have sought to reconceptualize the period. James Elkins is E.C. The Rise of Israel
A History of a Revolutionary State Jonathan Adelman The state of Israel is one of the most controversial countries in the world. Yet, its unique creation and rise to power in 1948 has not been adequately explained either by its friends (mainstream Zionists) nor by its detractors (Arabists and post-Zionists). Using a variety of comparative methodologies, Jonathan Adelman examines how Israel has gained the strength to overcome great obstacles and become a serious regional power in the Middle East by 2007. Jonathan Adelman, who teaches at the Graduate School of International Studies at the University of Denver, has written 11 books on Russian and Chinese politics, revolutions and security studies. Having taught at Hebrew University and the University of Haifa, he applies his knowledge of revolutions and international affairs to explaining the creation and flourishing of Israel. A Theory of Race Joshua Glasgow Social commentators have long asked whether racial categories should be conserved or eliminated from our practices, discourse, institutions, and perhaps even private thoughts. In A Theory of Race, Joshua Glasgow argues that this set of choices unnecessarily presents us with too few options. Using both traditional philosophical tools and recent psychological research to investigate folk understandings of race, Glasgow argues that, as ordinarily conceived, race is an illusion. However, our pressing need to speak to and make sense of social life requires that we employ something like racial discourse. These competing pressures, Glasgow maintains, ultimately require us to stop conceptualizing race as something biological, and instead understand it as an entirely social phenomenon. Joshua Glasgow is Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Victoria University of Wellington. Routledge December 2008: 6 x 9: 192pp: 4 line drawings Pb: 978-0-415-99073-8: $34.95/V philosophy
