Moving on up; transitioning your little one from nursery to big kid room

Does it feel like yesterday when you brought your precious bundle home to their beautiful nursery? Now your little one turns up their nose at the decor so perhaps it’s time for an update...

“Whether they’ve outgrown their toddler bed, or they simply need a better play space and hideaway, there are a few key things you can do to convert that baby room into a big kid friendly one,” says Luciana Lewis, lead sales agent with Mokki Children’s furniture.

She adds that with any big change to our kids’ lives it’s important to keep in mind that they need routine. Rather opt for a slower, gradual change over time.

“There’s no need to rush the process, take your time, and remember to keep your little one involved as much as possible. This will help them feel like they are part of the process”, Lewis says.

She shares some tips to make the transition to big kid room as smooth as possible for everyone involved.

Hello big kid bed

Choose a freestanding toddler bed that is low to the ground and one where you can use the cot mattress and bedding you already own. If your little one is a bit older then a big kid bed is the way to go. Just make sure you use a guard rail, and you may need a stool to help your child get up into bed.

Storage

As babies turn to toddlers and toddlers change to young children, their collection of toys and books change and multiply. Having the right storage will help keep everything accessible but also clutter free. Dual purpose items are ideal; Mokki’s Basketball and Soccer Ball Storage Stools provide both a seating option for your little one and storage for all his monster trucks, hot wheels, etc.

New bedding

Have fun and go bold or choose something more neutral for a longer life span. You probably chose their current bedding without them, so now is the opportunity to let their personality come through. Take them shopping with you and let them choose the bedding they’d like.

A cosy nook

Kids, just like us, need their space. A dedicated clutter free, calm area in their room will provide them with the perfect space to regroup. Pick a spot, usually a corner of a room with access to good amounts of natural light and decorate – include things that make them feel calm and that they love.

A décor refresh

Keep the room fairly neutral (again, for longevity) with pops of colour here and there. Have space for a small couch or seat in the room? Then that’s the ideal place to start with adding some brightness into the room. Mokki’s Flower Sofas are available in bright pink, red and purple – perfect for your little flower child. 
