Welcome to the Dallastown Area School Districts first Tech Camp! Thank you for joining us as us as we sharpen our tech skills, discover new technologies and find ways to enhance instruction with technology! This booklet was designed to help you get the most of your week at “Tech Camp.” We want you to have fun and be comfortable while you’re exploring. Take a chance and try something new!

Session Descriptions Each day we offer a myriad of breakout sessions that focus on the theme of the day. Each workshop is offered during both sessions. If a particular workshop is crowded, please consider joining another session. Your packet contains handouts to ALL sessions.

Monday, June 23rd: Communication Schedule: 8 AM – 9 AM: Opening (HS Theater Room) 9:15 AM – 11:30 AM: Session 1 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Lunch 12:30 PM – 2:45 PM: Session 2 2:45 PM – 3:00 PM: Closing (HS Theater Room) Breakout Sessions: WordPress Location: 107 Instructor: Ali Roperti Wordpress blogs are free, shared online journals that provide students with a fun and safe place to post their thoughts and ideas on the internet. This hands-on workshop will focus on how you can create blogs using Wordpress, and how you can manage them in your classroom.

PBWiki Location: 105 Instructor: Scott Shirey Every teacher can set up and use a Wiki, so why not PBWiki! Students can post their project work, book reviews, help ideas, etc. We will all set up a Wiki and discuss exactly how you could use one in your classroom so that students and you have access at home and school.

Wikispaces Location: 109 Instructor: Rob Robertson What is a wiki? Simply put a Wiki is an online database that looks like a web page that can be edited on the fly. In this class we will take a look at simple ways to integrate Wikis into your classroom by showing how to create, edit, and manipulate your wiki to create an online learning environment.. Skype Location: 113 Instructor: Eric Hartman Skype is free software that lets you talk by way of the internet to another Skype user, anywhere in the world, for free. WIth a simple web cam you can even see each other! Your computer does the work. Simply find another registered Skype user and connect. Imagine the possibilities for classroom collaboration. Weebly/School Rack/PageFlakes Teacher Pages Location: 122 Instructor: Cathryn Marsala Have you been told you need to have a website? Are you timid and unsure of how to create one? Don’t be scared. This workshop will introduce three websites that offer an easy and practical method for creating a website designed specifically for your classroom! Moodle Location: 117 Instructor: Cathy DiPiano Any time/Any where learning - Take your class beyond the classroom with Moodle, an online learning environment. Camstudio to Communicate Location: 128 Instructor: Karen Markey This software captures video of exactly what's on your computer screen. Aim a webcam at a presenter and synchronize with the screen recording to record your lesson/activity to share with anyone, anywhere. Convert your PowerPoint presentations to video that replays with narration and exact slide timings. The possibilities are endless!

This session will show you how to set up an account and the basics of how to use it. Buzzword & Journaler Location: 107 Instructor: Eric Verno Increase productivity in your classroom and in your life with online applications. We will explore two programs that will help you collaborate more efficiently on team and with your students. The best part, all that is needed is an internet connection! Social Bookmarking: Delicious Location: 109 Instructor: Ali Roperti Come learn the basics of Del.icio.us, a social bookmarking website that allows you to store, share, and discover online resources. This workshop will explore how to use del.icio.us as a social bookmarking system, how to discover resources that others have bookmarked, and how to share resources with others. Concept Mapping Location: 113 Instructor: Cathryn Marsala

Concept mapping is nothing new but the cool tools to create them are! We'll look at Inspiration, but then see how to take another step further to help with collaboration. We’ll preview websites that allow you to share concept maps with your friends, colleagues, or students when they’re done, as well as websites that allow you to share in real time. Open Office Location: 117 Instructor: Karen Markey Learn how to use the unique features of this free open-source office suite. It is compatible with all other major office suites and can be downloaded easily. Explore Calc, Draw, Impress, Math and Writer and see how they can benefit you and your students both in school and at home. Online Resources Location: 128 Instructor: Eric Hartman Some experts say we're at the dawn of a "new" Internet, one that lets us create content just as easily as we consume it. See how educators are finding great ways to use podcasting, video conferencing, and an ever-expanding pool of online resources to motivate their students.

No, not the movie. It's just the latest way to assess your students! With a simple click, students can show you what they know and have learned! Come and see how assessments are changing with Turning Point SRS in your secondary classroom! . Excel Spreadsheets Location: 107 Instructor: Eric Hartman A spreadsheet is a tool to organize information. With it, you can analyze data, perform calculations, and display data in a graph. Spreadsheets also can help students visualize, understand, and predict data patterns. This beginning workshop will explore the basics of using Microsoft Excel. Poll Daddy & Respons-o-Matic Location: 109 Instructor: Eric Verno Utilizing the internet to create excitement in the classroom has never been so easy. Whether you want to create an online assessment or just have the kids give their input about classroom activities. Poll Daddy & Respons-o-Matic is for you! Survey Monkey Location: 113 Instructor: Ali Roperti Survey Monkey is a simple way for anyone to create and administer free online surveys. In this workshop, you will learn how to design, publish, collect responses, and analyze survey data. Creating Web-based Assessment Location: 117 Instructor: Dave Morton As a teacher in the Dallastown School District you have access to Dallastown.net and all the tools of SchoolWires. Through SchoolWires we will explore the creation of online assessments and student information tools. We will also be examining the resources at several other sites, for example 4Teachers.org. Online Graphing Tools Location: 128 Instructor: Karen Markey Join us in exploring internet sites created to help communicate information visually. This session will guide teachers in how to graphically represent data easily, using many different 2d, 3d and shadow graphs and charts. Most of the sites are also student friendly, so they can create graphs of their own!

FotoFlexer & Tux Paint Location: 105 Instructor: Scott Shirey Did you ever want to have that one visual that would help grab the students attention or explain a topic? FotoFlexer is a very powerful program that will allow you to manipulate any photo or create your own. We will explore the basics of image manipulation and create some stunning photos! Google Earth Location: 107 Instructor: Alma Row Google Earth is an exciting free piece of software that can bring any instruction to 'life' using satellite imagery allowing one to virtually "travel" all over the world. This workshop will focus on creating virtual tours enhanced by images, videos, and overlays to create authentic, multimedia activities for students Audacity Location: 109 Instructor: Karen Markey Create listening centers, record tests, assignments or student reading for quality playback. Record sounds into the computer, edit the file, and save or export in different formats including mp3. Burn the recordings on CD or playback on your computer

Movie Maker Location: 113 Instructor: Eric Hartman Your students will love this little program—arrange, edit, and record movies right on your computer. It's a simple interface, mostly dragand-drop, so within minutes you’ll be turning classroom pictures and video into your own Oscar-worthy features. Here’s looking at you, kids. Photo Story & Voki Location: 122 Instructor: Jason Volz Bring your digital photos to life with Photo Story. With a few clicks, you create an exciting movie from your pictures and add stunning special effects, soundtracks, and your own voice narration to your photo stories. Bring yourself to life with Voki, a web-based tool that enables you to create a talking character to express yourself using your own voice. You can customize your Voki to look like you or take on the identity of lots of other types of characters… animals, monsters, anime, etc.

Flickr & FlauntR Location: 117 Instructor: Ali Roperti Flickr is a photo sharing community that contains images that can be used in many aspects of teaching. This workshop will focus on how to use this website to help develop students' visual literacy skills, and how to integrate photos that you edit for free with FlauntR. Digital Phtography: BYOC (Bring your own camera!!) Location: 126 Instructor: Rob Robertson Just about everyone has some type of digital camera in today’s society, but are they being used to their full extent? This workshop will go over several basic tips on how to use your digital camera to its full extent. We will also look at how to edit pictures, and some specific features that are present on most digital cameras.

Online Shows Location: 128 Instructor: Cathryn Marsala Come see the wonder that Web 2.0 programs are bringing us that help us create our own online shows! Learn the basics of these websites and how you can use your photos from class activities to help tell a story, share ideas and connections, and reflect on the learning that took place! Harvesting Digital Media Location: 130 Instructor: Rick Rabuck Learn to navigate the web and find the best resources for your students. This workshop will explore ways to use NetTreker, unitedstreaming, and Creative Commons to find Digital Media to use to enrich student instruction.

Students of all ages can use it to enrich and differentiate their learning. This workshop will explore the many features of PowerPoint and innovative ways it can be used. Word and Beyond! Location: 117 Instructor: Ali Roperti Microsoft Word is a powerful word processing application that can help you work more effectively. This hands-on workshop will show you how to create projects in Microsoft Word using the many features that are a part of the software. SmartBoards in the Elementary Classroom Location: 107 Instructor: Cathryn Marsala Bored of using the chalkboard? Overhead projector getting old and tattered? Well, here is the technology for you! It’s time to get “smarter” with the SmartBoard. Learn how the SmartBoard can be used as a management tool as well as a learning device. Experience what learning can be like with technology in action.

SmartBoards in the Secondary Classroom Location: 109 Instructor: Scott Shirey Smartboards can be an invaluable tool in your classroom. This session will show you some ideas on how to use the Smartboard in a way that will direct the students attention to the material you are teaching. If you are a beginner, or a veteran with this tool, you will most likely learn something fun here. Spreadsheets Are Not Just for Math! Location: 128 Instructor: Alma Row (Sess.1); Karen Markey (Sess.2) Spreadsheets can be used in almost any subject area - not just for crunching numbers. This beginner workshop will focus on ways to create interactive worksheets from templates that can be used in almost any instructional area. Publisher Location: 113 Instructor: Eric Hartman Publisher is a desktop publishing program designed to help students create professional quality publications. Students can easily get started on their publication by choosing from more than 2,000 templates. From brochures and Web sites to newsletters and business cards, you're certain to find just the publication you need for class activities. Taking Excel up Notch Location: 122 Instructor: Dave Morton This session will take a quick look at unique classroom applications of Excel (spreadsheets). Some spreadsheet applications can be fun for the students to use. This session will then focus on using Excel to examine and compare individual student results and class results by using graphs and charts. Excel can be a great tool to show students their own progress, especially as it relates to other students.
