The Parker Automotive Group Fishing, Families and Fun BIG ROCK 2016 LEGEND SPONSOR Dick Parker made his way to the Crystal Coast from Mount Olive selling candy and watermelons out of the back of a pickup truck when the depression years sent him out looking for work. In 1947, he opened up his first car dealership in downtown Morehead City near the present day yacht basin. Embracing his new hometown and its passion for fishing, Dick and four other local Dick Parker | Big Rock Legend businessmen, which would soon be known as the Fabulous Fisherman’s Club, started the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. The Parker Automotive group is proud to continue his legacy and tradition of supporting the charitable efforts of the tournament and the excitement surrounding reeling in the big one!

Big Rock Board of

Directors President’s Message The Super Bowl and The Daytona 500 are behind us, and now for the event of the year…the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament. In 2015 we started the weekend prior to the Tournament with a concert at Big Rock Landing featuring James Wesley singing Hooked Up. There is a music video with plenty of waterfront footage, and you can buy the song on iTunes. Viking 62 won the 2015 event with a 680lb Blue Marlin. The newly created outboard division netted 22 boats with one of them, the EZ Boy, landing in second place with a 556.3lb Blue Marlin and Carly A finishing third with a 503.4 Blue. There were 149 entries in the 2015 event and a total of $1,636,050 in prize money given away at the 57th Awards Banquet.

BILLY KORNEGAY President Past President 2001-2003 Billy supports the board in many areas including having run the committee boat from 1986 to 1998. Billy fished the Big Rock aboard the Sugar Bear beginning in 1972 and has served on the board of directors since 1982.

The Big Rock Board at its October meeting voted unanimously to give $337,000 to various charities. The Beaufort Boys and Girls Club received a new bus. The Broad Street Clinic is helping more people with their health care needs. The History Place, offered by the Carteret County Historical Society, is preserving more of our North Carolina history for generations to come. Martha’s Mission is feeding more hungry people. North Carolina State University’s Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST) keeps researching marine species, including the Blue Marlin, Tuna, Wahoo and Dolphin. Hope Mission shelters more folks who need a meal and a roof. Carobell’s Station Club Enterprise helps more adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. And the Take A Kid Fishing Foundation keeps taking kids who might never have had the opportunity out to learn how to fish. In all, the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has given away $3,715,459 since 1986. I sincerely would like to thank our Staff, Volunteers, and Board of Directors for all they do all year long. I would also like to thank our Participants and Sponsors and especially Calcutta, back with us for the fourth year as our Major Sponsor, for all of their support. It takes all of us to come together to make The Big Rock such a success. We love to fish. We love everything about it—the sunlight on the water, the fresh air, the pull on the line. We even love it when we don’t catch anything. Like they say, a bad day fishing beats…well, just about everything else. There is nothing on dry land that can match the beauty and the movement of the ocean. Our mountains and deserts and National Parks are beautiful, breathtaking, inspiring, but nothing matches the water. The ocean is alive. It moves, and it is always changing. Like the ocean, The Big Rock keeps changing—it just keeps getting better. God Bless our Troops. Let’s go fishing. Billy Kornegay

ROCKN’ SHOTS

FROM THE JAMES WESLEY CONCERT By Kyle Horan The Big Rock has a new theme song of sorts and it's called "Hooked Up." In its 57th year, the fishing tournament in Morehead City has been honored with a country song performed by James Wesley. The song is cowritten by a man who has been fishing off the Crystal Coast for years. Todd Morris had the idea to make a song about the tournament several years ago. It wasn't until 2014 that he decided to team up with a writer and producer from Nashville, Harry Smith. Together they created "Hooked Up." After asking Wesley to perform the song, the whole crew is recording a music video on the Eastern North Carolina coast. "[The crew of the Sensation] are the inspiration behind the songs," Morris said. "They're the ones that took the time to teach me what the Big Rock was and what the blue water was and the marlin." Wesley said he is honored to do the song and become a part of Crystal Coast history. Films crews went 40 miles into the ocean to fish for the big rock for the music video. They also filmed at Jack's Waterfront Bar and at Fort Macon State Park. "We say it's a music video but it's really going to be a movie," Morris said. "It's really going to tell the story of this whole area." A donated guitar for the music video was auctioned off at the Awards Banquet and the money was donated to the Big Rock charitities. "It's just an honor to be singing this song," Wesley said. "They picked me, out of anybody they could've picked, they picked me to do the song and that was pretty flattering in itself."

Big Rock A to Z 26 FUN FACTS ABOUT BIG ROCK & THE CRYSTAL COAST Artists

Glenn Lamp was chosen as this year’s Big Rock Keli Wagner artist for his full vibrant use of color. Glenn turned his studies to marine life in 2012 and now solely focuses on the sea. The 2016 art features an active blue marlin with an explosion of beautiful bright color surrounding the fish. Glenn believes we were created to see color, see life. Sea Colour, Sea Life! His studio “Day 5” is located in Emerald Isle, NC.

Board of Directors The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament is made up of 17 volunteer board members who work diligently each year to bring the finest blue marlin fishing tournament to the Crystal Coast. Many have served on the board for over 20 years and bring a vast amount of experience and talent to the tournament. This superior “think tank” has helped Big Rock donate over $3.5 million dollars to charity.

The 2015 tournament season started off with bang as James Wesley took the stage for Big Rock’s first outdoor community concert. The 2016 concert will bring James back to the Crystal Coast and will showcase the full video of his song “Hooked Up”.

Excitement It’s hard to contain the excitement leading up to Big Rock with all the activities and weigh station drama! Come see us June 10-18, 2016

Hospital Carteret Health Care (formally Carteret General Hospital) opened its new 55 million dollar cancer facility in August of 2015. A portion of tournament funds from the Keli Wagner Lady Angler Tournament are donated each year to aid in the comfort and care of its patients.

Amber’s art for 2016 showcases a beautiful full-color blue marlin and assorted gamefish. The “old and new” style sport fishing boats are featured with the boat that caught the first blue marlin in Morehead City, the Mary Z. Amber lives in South Florida.

Inlets A vast majority of boats fishing Big Rock leave through the Beaufort Inlet, between Morehead City and Beaufort. However, because of the wide range fishing coordinates allowed at Big Rock, boats may also leave from Oregon Inlet (north) and Murrell’s Inlet (south).

Country singer, James Wesley will return this year singing his hit single, “Hooked UP”.

Kids There are many charities Big Rock supports, but the tournament has always focused on the children of our area as a main goal such as Newport Development Center, Boys and Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina, the NC Symphony Children’s Concert, and the Boys Scouts of Eastern Carolina. See more of our charities starting on page 66.

Tuna There are many species of tuna but only yellowfin are weighed during Big Rock.

Weigh Station The Big Rock had used several locations for weighing fish including the docks beside Capt. Bills, Morehead City Yacht Basin, the dock beside Jack’s, 405 Evans Street, and the new weigh station built in 2015 at 710 Shepard Street.

Unique The location of the Big Rock is an area of hard bottom located about 35 miles Southeast of Morehead City. The structure’s location along the continental shelf in 80 – 500 ft. of water is unique since it is generally in the Gulf Stream current.

YouTube Xiphias Gladius Vessel The Lucky 7 fishing fleet was famous for bringing loads of fish back to the dock. One of the retired boats was on display in the “jib” for many years. In 2013, the Big Rock Winner’s Fountain was built on the same site.

The Carteret County Historical Society’s “History Place” is a 501c3 nonprofit whose educational mission it is to preserve and interpret the human history of the county from early Native American times through the present. We accomplish this by offering various history products to the general public, including in school programs, publications, exhibits, a family genealogical library and presentations by various speakers and groups. We fund this activity in a variety of ways. Our Les A. Ewen Auditorium lays at the heart of our income producing assets. Year round, we rent this hall to various groups, wedding parties, musical performers, governmental agencies and others. We also present our own local history programs within its walls. This past summer and even now, Big Rock Tournament funds are being applied towards the renovation of this important community asset. The acquisition of a portable

stage, refurnished flooring, painting of the walls, upgrades in the sound and light systems and other improvements are making this a “button ready” facility that can better accommodate different uses and needs. We have also created a new temporary exhibit “We Went to Viewe the Lande Adjoyning…” which is a historical/artistic immersion into our coastline’s first European exploration in 1585. A portion of the foundation’s grant was applied to the creation of this exhibit as well. The Society operates on roughly $110,000 per year – averaging 15-20,000 visitors per year. It is supported through grants, donations, fund-raisers and membership. Many consider what we hold as the “living memory” of the county. We are very thankful for the Big Rock Tournament’s grant in support of our work.

Baiting hooks and casting lines they shared in their knowledge

It has been a rewarding experience for participants, many of which have never seen the ocean or felt the tug of a line and a heartfelt day for the volunteers and contributors that give each year of their resources, talent and time. They have shared their experiences together creating memories that last a lifetime. Thank you for believing in “Charity First”. NC UNIVERSITY CENTER for Marine Science and Technology

North Carolina State University’s Center for Marine Science and Technology (CMAST), located in Morehead City, has worked with the Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament since 2003 to sample these fishes from the tournament. In addition to collecting samples for our own research, we also sample these fish for other scientists that work on these species because the opportunity to sample some of these animals is quite rare. The following information and samples are taken from yellowfin tuna, wahoo, dolphin, and blue marlin: length, weight, sex, a variety of tissues (e.g., muscle, reproductive organs, liver, heart, stomachs, and mucus), and hard parts (e.g., scales, otoliths, and fish spines). To date, we have collected samples for over a dozen marine biologists working along the U.S. Atlantic coast. The fish captured during the Big Rock Tournament are top predators in the surface waters of the ocean. They have extremely high feeding rates and may have a disproportionately large effect on their prey populations when compared to other predators. Stomach contents are being analyzed by N.C. State University to determine the principal prey of these species. To date, dolphin and yellowfin 70 | BIG ROCK thebigrock.com

tuna have the most diverse diets with a variety of fish and invertebrates including flyingfish, filefish, and squid. However, blue marlin and wahoo appear to be very selective, feeding mainly on frigate mackerel. Besides the thrill they bring to captains, crew, and the Big Rock audience at the weigh station, fish caught during the Big Rock continue to help shed light on the biology of these highly migratory fishes.

Species

Drawings provided by: The Carey Chen Collection, careychen.com 1405 N Alternate A1A, Suite 105, Jupiter, FL 33469

Identification

Blue Marlin Makaira Nigricans D Da Dark blue to chocolate brown body aal along lo the back and upper sides, ch changing ha to silvery white on the belly. On the sides there are approximately 15 pale blue vertical bars. Blue Marlin 15 m ma may a be distinguished from White M Ma Marlin a by the dorsal and anal fins and an d by the fish’s size. The dorsal and an anal na fins of Blue Marlin are pointed, w wh whereas White Marlin have rounded fin ns. The first dorsal fin of the Blue M Ma Marlin is much shorter relative to the bod bo body d depth when compared to that of th the he White Marlin. Any marlin caught oof off ff the southeastern United States we weighing e over 150 pounds is almost certainly a Blue Marlin.

White Marlin Tetrapturus Albidus The most characteristic feature of the White Marlin is the rounded, rather than pointed, tips of the pectoral fins, first dorsal fin and first anal fin. The body is dark blue to chocolate along the upper half and brownish to silvery white along the lower sides and belly. The first dorsal fin is blue-black and covered with many small black spots. The other fins are brown-black. Unlike Blue Marlin, the White Marlin usually has no spots or bars on the sides. The White Marlin has a clearly visible lateral line. Usually less than 100 lbs. with a majority in the 4060 lb. range. In comparison, the Blue Marlin has pointed fins, and the lateral line is not evident.

Sailfish

Istiophorus Platypterus Sailfish are dark blue along the upper half of the body, fading to brownish-blue on the lower sides to silver white on the belly. The first dorsal fin is high, sail-like, blueblack, and covered with many small black spots. All related billfishes have a high dorsal fin as juveniles, but only the Sailfish retains the high fin throughout life. The other fins are silver-blue. On the sides are 15-20 vertical bars consisting of several small blue spots. The majority of Sailfish caught off the North Carolina coast range from 20 to 50 lbs.

Not Pic Pictured:

Longbill Spearfish

Tetrapturus pfluegeri Spearfish, Hatchet Marlin The Longbill, which attains a length of 6-1/2 feet, may be distinguished from the more common White and Blue Marlins by the slender body, the number of rays in the two dorsal fins (44 to 50; and 6 or 7), and the close proximity of the anus to the origin of the first anal fin. The body is dark blue dorsally, brownish-white along the sides, and silvery on the belly; overall it lacks conspicuous vertical bars. The first dorsal fin is blue-black and unspotted.

thebigrock.com

Welcome to the North Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing ConservaƟon Series! In 2015 we celebrated our 25th Season with 47 boats. We were once again fortunate to have fantasƟc fishing with 172 billfish entered in the Series. The North Carolina Governor’s Cup Billfishing ConservaƟon Series is an annual sporƞishing series operaƟng cooperaƟvely with eight major billfish tournaments held along the Tar Heel coast. The Series, managed by the Division of Marine Fisheries promotes conservaƟon, protecƟon, and preservaƟon of our marine resources. ParƟcipaƟng boats or teams are awarded Series points for billfish caught and released and for billfish taken which met tournament minimum size requirements. Penalty points are assessed for undersized fish taken, the emphasis being on fish released. Trophies are awarded to boats with the most points in both the “Private Boat” and “Charter Boat” categories. Individual awards are given to the outstanding junior boy, outstanding junior girl and lady anglers. In addiƟon, trophies are awarded for the largest blue marlin, yellowfin tuna, wahoo, and dolphin.

Run Off anglers Stephanie Avent, Fuquay Varina, and Julia Simpson of Morehead City, combined to release a blue marlin and land a 22.9-pound dolphin Saturday to defeat a record field of 96 boats and win the 18th annual Keli Wagner Lady Angler (KWLA) tournament. Ashley Lauren came in second with a blue marlin release and a 20.5-pound dolphin. Carnivore finished third with a blue marlin release and an 18.2-pound dolphin. It was the tightest finish in KWLA history, with 8 boats tied at 400 points before going to a tiebreaker. Simpson, who had never fished the KWLA before, boated her dolphin shortly after the tournament got under way. Her catch served as the tiebreaker at the scales after Avent fought and released her first blue marlin. ”It jumped, it ran out and it went deep,” said Avent as she recounted her 35-minute fight. “It was a team effort and everyone helped catch this fish. It was all pretty amazing.” The two catches helped Run Off win $10,200 from a record $60,668 purse. But late Friday it didn’t look as if any records would be broken. “Last night, around 4 p.m., we only had 60 boats registered,” said KWLA tournament

director Donna Hardy, who had a record 81 boats register last year. “I figured there was no way to even get close to last year’s number. “Then the weather took a favorable turn and 36 more registrations occurred between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

We had 10 fishing teams register as non-fishing teams … they just wanted to support what we do. We had 33 sponsors this year and people are still coming out of the woodwork asking to help. This community is amazing.” We III angler Abby Broughton, Washington, D.C., won the “Winner Take All” dolphin category to help her team win $37,400 with a 34.1-pound catch. The We III, captained by Preston Lea, Raleigh, also receives $3,400 for winning dolphin gamefish category. Little Less Talk angler Erin Blaha, Newport, landed a 40.6-pound wahoo to win $3,400 in that gamefish division. No tuna were brought to the scales for the second straight year so that division prize of $6,288 will roll forward to the 19th annual KWLA next year. Proceeds of $25,000 from the one-day billfish event will be donated to KWLA charities. Since 1998, the KWLA has raised $251,065 for area charities. The KWLA is named after Keli Wagner, a local avid fisherman and supporter of this event who lost her battle with cancer in 2008.

CHARITY

365 Days of Comfort & Care Carteret Health Care provides an outstanding comprehensive range of services to meet the needs of cancer patients and their caregivers. The hospital’s goal is to improve the quality of life of patients by offering a full spectrum of cancer services close to family, friends, and home. The goal of the KWLA tournament is to improve the quality of that visit by contributing to patient comfort and care.

A patient at The Carteret Health Care Cancer Clinic attended a pottery class at The Blu Sail Art Gallery, with other patients and survivors. She expressed how much joy it brought to her during this difficult time. The class was offered and paid for by the KWLA funds! #KWLA #charityfirst #blusailgallery

Keli, who lost her battle with cancer in October 2008, was instrumental in having proceeds from the lady’s tournament donated to the Carteret Health Care Cancer Center, specifically for patient comfort and care. Ted Lewis photo

Carteret Health Care’s new Cancer Center will provide comprehensive, multidisciplinary oncology services in a convenient, single location to better meet the needs of patients and families from throughout our County and region. This new resource, so generously supported by the Keli Wagner Lady Angler tournament, will immensely benefit advanced cancer care and enhance survivorship in a comforting and supportive environment that builds on the Hospital’s tradition of high quality, personalized healthcare. On behalf of the patients and families served by the Raab and Coleman Clinics, I want to thank the Lady Anglers for participating in such a fun and successful charitable event. BIG news! The Carteret Health Care Cancer Clinic opened in August of 2015! We are in partnership with UNC Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Care which strengthens the CHC Cancer Services. The affiliation offers additional clinical trials, streamlines the process for patients who may seek second options and allows collaboration in patient care planning via telehealth. Awarded a three-year accreditation with commendation from The Commission on Cancer (CoC) of the American College of Surgeons (ACoS). Medical Oncology is one of ten facilities in NC recognized by the Quality Oncology Practice Initiative. One last but most important thing. Because of you, the KWLA, we are able to provide so many things to make the patients journey much more comprehensive and comfortable. Patients are loving the addition this year of art therapy.

ABOUT THE ARTIST We are pleased to announce Glenn Lamp as Big Rock’s 19th Annual Keli Wagner artist. Originally from San Diego, California, Glenn made his way to the Carolina’s in 1985 and has resided here ever since. His love of art began in 1982, and he got his foothold under the renowned painter Gene Locklear. From 1985-86, Glenn studied under Donna Beck Rhodes, winning several awards and a two-year college scholarship to study art. In 1987, he studied with the late Robbie Tillotson, who was well known in the New York art scene in the ’70s, and who continued to exhibit his work until his death in 1988. Throughout the ’90s, Glenn worked in the commercial art industry. In 1999, he decided to step back into painting. Glenn formed Glenn Lamp Studios where he provided service to interior designers and homeowners. The art from Glenn Lamp Studios ranged from wall and ceiling mural, specialty finishes and fine art commissions. Glenn turned his studies to marine life in 2012 and now solely focuses on the sea. Day 5 by Glenn Lamp is the name of his new line. Day 5 represents the day when God created all the living sea creatures. Glenn Lamp was chosen as this year’s Big Rock KWLA artist for his full vibrant use of color. The 2016 art features an active blue marlin with an explosion of beautiful bright color surrounding the fish. Glenn believes we were created to see color, see life. Sea Colour, Sea Life! From the commercial client to residential, Glenn believes in providing every client with the satisfaction and “wow” factor they deserve. His art is custom tailored to fit and accentuate any space. He wants everyone that views his art to be blown away. Glenn’s studio is located in Emerald Isle, NC where he offers paintings, apparel, gifts and decor for sale.

However, each party shall bear the expense of said party’s own counsel, experts, witnesses, and preparation and presentation of proofs. Only in the case of extreme abuse of the procedure may the arbitrator reallocate such costs and expenses among the parties. f) Any arbitral award may be enforced by an action in the Superior Court of Carteret County. The terms and conditions of this Agreement shall be construed, interpreted, and enforced under the laws and judicial decisions of the

To this effect, responsible, authorized representatives of the interest parties shall meet, consult, and negotiate with each other in good faith (with or without a third-party mediator, as they may choose) and attempt to reach a mutually satisfactory solution. In the event they do not reach such a solution within a period of five (5) days after the first notice by any party to any other of the existence of the dispute, then without waiving any other provisions in these Rules concerning the absolute discretion and finality of decisions made by the Tournament Officials, Boards, or Committees, the sole and exclusive means for resolution of any dispute shall be the procedures set forth below: a) The dispute shall be submitted to arbitration under the North Carolina Revised Uniform Arbitration Act, Chapter 1, Article 45C of the North Carolina General Statutes. b) All negotiations, mediations, and arbitration hearings shall take place in Morehead City, North Carolina, or such other places the interested parties may agree upon in writing. c) The arbitration shall be conducted by a single arbitrator who is a retired North Carolina state or federal judge or an attor-

In the event the interested parties cannot agree upon an arbitrator, the decision shall be made by a Resident Superior Court Judge of Carteret County, North Carolina. d) Prior to any arbitration hearing, limited discovery shall be permitted for the purpose of obtaining production of documents and taking depositions. All discovery shall be governed by the North Carolina Rules of Civil Procedure. All issues regarding discovery requests shall be decided by the arbitrator. All discovery shall be completed within 90 days after the selection of the arbitrator; provided, however, that the arbitrator shall have the authority to extend or reduce the time for discovery in a manner consistent with a general desire for expedited resolution of the dispute. e) All fees and expenses for the arbitration shall be borne by the parties equally. The terms and conditions of this Agreement shall be construed, interpreted, and enforced under the laws and judicial decisions of the State of North Carolina, notwithstanding any principle of conflicts of law. In the event any part of this Agreement shall be declared illegal, invalid, or void, such declaration shall not affect the validity of any of the other terms or provisions of this document. 18. BIG ROCK

Winner of 57th Big Rock follows recent historical trend By Bruce Paul, Media Director Four days after it rolled off the production line, Viking 62 took the inaugural lead in the 57th annual Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament and held off all challengers to capture the prestigious six-day fishing competition. Captain Brian Komer of Riviera Beach, Fla., and angler Earle Hall, Hampton, Va., showed up at the scales on the tournament’s first day with a 680-pound blue marlin. It was a catch big enough to win 26-of-30 previous Big Rocks. Viking 62 delivered like a seasoned professional during its maiden tournament competition. The Viking 62 fishing teammates won $560,500 from the Big Rock’s $1,632,650 purse and missed an additional $365,500 in prize money by electing to bypass the “Fabulous Fisherman” portion of the competition. Despite that disappointment, Komer was pleased with the wire-to-wire victory. “It’s by far the longest week of my life,” Komer admitted after Viking 62 was declared the winner. “Hooking the fish 15 minutes into the first day, I knew we had a long week ahead of us. We still went out there, stuck with our game plan and we didn’t let up. It worked out just great.”

A recent historical trend suggests that the Big Rock’s opening day is the most important day of the competition. In 2014, Inspiration captain Casey Wagner, Morehead City, and angler Bruce Brown, Nags Head, caught a 754.3-pound blue marlin during the first day of the 56th Big Rock. Brown’s catch held on to win that event and is the largest blue marlin caught during a Big Rock this century. In 2011, Double B captain Kenny Sexton, Manteo, captured the 53rd Big Rock in near wire-to-wire fashion when he grabbed a late first-day lead and held it through five more days of fishing. Sexton’s blueprint for victory turned out to be a roadmap for the Flybuoy crew who won wire-to-wire with a Monday catch in 2012. But this early tournament success is just a recent phenomenon. Not long ago, nobody fished for blue marlins off the North Carolina coast. Marlin fishing was thought to be something restricted to the balmy waters of the Gulf of Mexico. Historically speaking, anglers had good reason not to try. Fishermen had harvested the N.C. offshore waters for centuries and had never caught a blue marlin. This was still the case in 1956. But sailors from cargo ships that came ashore at the Morehead City port after World War II would tell residents they had seen blue marlin not too far from port. While most dismissed this as “bar talk,” a few wishful thinkers hoped the stories were true. These dreamers were members of Morehead City’s Fabulous Fishermen Club, a collection of local fishing enthusiasts who gathered at one of the waterfront cafes to share a story or two over a cup of coffee. They had all heard the sailor’s fish tales. Some wondered how they could find out if it was true. The year was 1957 and times were tough. The post-war building boom that was changing much of America had not had much impact in this area. Morehead City was a sleepy little port. Residents scratched out a living as best they could. But Bob and Mary Simpson, Bill Strickland, Tom Potter and Dick Parker – charter member of the Fabulous Fishermen Club – convinced local business leaders to put up a cash prize of a couple hundred dollars to encourage the area’s fledgling charter boat industry to head further offshore to find these elusive fish. Parker, who had fished for billfish in the Caribbean, knew what a boon this would be to the waterfront’s charter boat business. The prize money that was raised did the trick. Boats ventured further offshore. Soon, captains and anglers began reporting their own blue marlin sightings. Still, throughout the summer of ’57, no blue marlins were caught. These summer failures finally gave way to one huge autumn success. On Sept. 14, 1957, Raleigh angler Jimmy Croy, fishing aboard the Mary Z with Capt. K.W. “Bill” Olsen, landed a 143-pound blue marlin. This catch would forever change the face of fishing along the North Carolina coast. Olsen radioed back to port and word of the catch spread throughout the small town. When the Mary Z finally pulled into port, the boat and crew was greeted by a large gathering and blaring police sirens. An impromptu parade along the waterfront ensued. The main feature was a child’s red wagon filled with silver dollars. This prize was pulled to the boat and presented to the lucky fishermen. While no one knows exactly where Olsen and Croy made their historic catch, most think the two had reached the Gulf Stream, a warm-water current that bisects colder coastal waters about 40-60 miles south of the Morehead City port. As the Gulf Stream drifts north along the N.C. coastline, it crosses a structure on the continental shelf called “Big Rock” from which the tournament takes its name. The Big Rock – which is not a rock at all – is a series of ledges, peaks and plateaus that covers an 132 | BIG ROCK

Viking 62, winner of 57th Big Rock, follows recent historical trend of first day success. area about 8-10 miles long by 1 mile in width. It’s a haven for small reef fish – the type of fish that attract the larger fish that blue marlin feast on. It’s a microcosm of the oceanic food chain just a short distance from the Morehead City waterfront. While the Big Rock remained an underwater secret for much of the nation’s history, it’s now considered the premier spot for marlin fishing on the East Coast. But even though the Big Rock has provided more than $1 million to tournament winners for 18 straight years, it took 40 years of hard work by the Big Rock board of directors and tournament organizers to reach this level of success. Early Big Rock events could hardly be considered tournaments. There were few rules and the competition was restricted to the members of the Fabulous Fishermen Club. Some of the early prizes resembled booty from a scavenger hunt. A 1965 newspaper article that detailed the winner’s prizes listed a quart of varnish. Now the tournament has a permanent new headquarters building at 710 Evans Street on the Morehead City waterfront. The sale of Big Rock T-shirts and other items goes on throughout the year. That’s because humble beginnings gave way to a huge growth in prize money that no one could have predicted. In ’74, the winning boat received just $800. Ten years later, the purse reached $70,000. Twelve years after that, the purse reached $743,000. For the last 18 years, the competition has topped $1 million and continues to grow with increased sponsorship and participation. Throughout it all, the Big Rock’s biggest asset has been the collective leadership of the Big Rock board of directors. The men and women who serve on the board act as stewards of the tournament. They

have been instrumental to its rise in prosperity and popularity. They established and have tweaked the rules every year to ensure the competition is fair to all entrants. They have led the way in the establishment of conservation standards that other tournaments later chose to model. The Big Rock board made it a part of its charter to give back to the local community. It established a foundation that supports a multitude of charities. Since 1988, the Big Rock has donated more than $3.1 million to tournament charities. Last year, every charity received every dollar they asked for. Early on, the competition consisted of a handful of charter boat captains hoping to win a few dollars and the bragging rights that came with a Big Rock victory. Currently, hundreds of anglers participate, representing the best marlin fishermen in the world. The Big Rock has become the “Super Bowl” of fishing because of the way winner’s feel after capturing the event. In 2003, J.F. and Jim Pedersen, a father-and-son team from Hollywood, S.C., captured the 45th Big Rock the day before Father’s Day. It was a timely moment for both and it gave the competition a Hollywood ending. In 2006, Goldsboro angler Wes Seegars fenced

off the rest of the competition aboard Chainlink when he caught the last and biggest blue marlin of the 48th Big Rock. Seegars battled his blue marlin for seven hours aboard a vessel that had won the Big Rock before in ’94 when the boat was named the Salty Fare. In 2014, Eye Catcher, a Wrightsville Beach-based boat captained by Burrows Smith, Wilmington, hooked a 606.9-pound blue marlin 11 minutes after the start of fishing. Eye Catcher was bumped to second place by Wagner and the Inspiration fishing team, but finished second at the end of the competition. Eye Catcher’s blue marlin would have won 7-of-10 previous Big Rock’s, but things can change in the blink of an eye. While the Big Rock is wild and unpredictable, it always holds the promise of a big payday. It entices competitors to come back, year after year and has grown beyond any early expectations. It all started in 1957 with one lucky catch … a catch that Big Rock winners can relate to for the rest of their lives. It’s a Gulfstream fishing tradition that has no equal and always seems to hinge on one lucky hook-up. Recently that hook-up has happened on the tournament’s opening day. thebigrock.com

Q-Who is Smithfield Foods? A-Smithfield Foods is the livestock production division of Smithfield Foods and we are the largest hog producer in the world. Q-What does Smithfield Foods do or produce? A-Smithfield Foods produces approximately 16 million market hogs annually. Q-Where did the company name come from? A-The company name was formed when Smithfield acquired three privately owned hog production companies around 2001(Carroll’s Foods, Murphy Farms and Brown’s of Carolina) and consolidated them into one wholly owned division of Smithfield Foods. At that time it was decided to call the newly formed operation Smithfield Foods. Q-Can you tell me about the scope and scale of your business? A-Smithfield Foods owns and operates approximately 450 pork farms in 12 states across the U.S. and has joint venture projects in Mexico. We have approximately 5,000 employees and we do business with over 2,000 independent farmers who grow animals on a contractual basis for us. We have annual sales of over $3 billion, an annual payroll of approximately $250 million and we pay out more than $350 million annually to local farmers who grow animals for us. Q-Where is your company HQ? A- Warsaw, North Carolina Q-Do you do business with or buy things from local farmers and other businesses? A-Yes, each year we purchase hundreds of millions of bushels of locally grown corn, wheat and other crops which we use in feed rations to feed our animals. We also purchase vehicles, equipment and supplies from local businesses. Q-I have heard that Smithfield and Smithfield Foods are industry leaders in several categories. Can you tell me about that? A-Smithfield Foods is the pork industry leader, not just in size but in the areas of valuing employees, animal care, environmental stewardship, food safety and community support. Q-Is Smithfield Foods a good place to work and have a career? A-Smithfield Foods is a great place to work. We recruit the best talent in our industry and provide opportunities for each of them to grow and develop to their fullest potential. Our compensation and benefits package is very competitive with other Fortune 200 companies. We have major medical, dental, and vision health benefits. We provide a non-contributory pension plan, 401K plans, paid vacation and medical leave time and other benefits to all of our employees. Q-Some people are curious about how you take care of your animals, tell me about that. A-Our animals are our livelihood and we are committed to keeping them safe, comfortable and healthy. We train each of our farm employees proper handling and management practices and we closely monitor all our animals on a daily basis to make sure they are provided with nutritious feed, fresh water, fresh air, shelter from the elements and predators and the best health care possible. We have the industry leading Animal Care Program which includes daily observation,

Big Rock TV Host Rick Cowell talks with Don Butler of Smithfield Foods at the weigh station. unannounced Animal Care Audits as well as third party audits of our system. We were the first in our industry to do these things. Q-What about protecting the environment? A- We have an unwavering commitment to environmental protection. In 2001, we were the first livestock operation in the world to develop and implement an ISO 14001 certified Environmental Management System. The ISO Standard is the international gold standard for environmental management. We are very proud of our environmental performance. Q-You produce a lot of pork. What about food safety? A-Producing safe and wholesome pork products is job one for Smithfield Foods and Smithfield. Producing safe food starts with healthy animals. We have 17 Veterinarians in the company who monitor herd health continually and we follow their advice closely to keep our animals healthy. Healthy animals make safe food. Q-Is the company involved in the communities where you are located? A-Yes, in every community where we operate our employees are engaged in community activities as volunteers (more than 5,000 volunteer hours in 2014), we provide financial support to a wide variety of community causes and organizations (volunteer fire and rescue units, 4H, FFA, health and wellness programs and many others). We are part of the communities. Q-Why is Smithfield Foods involved with the Big Rock Tournament? A-Several reasons: 1. We want people in the sport fishing community to know who we are and what we stand for. 2. We want to provide an unforgettably positive eating experience by providing thick-cut marinated grilled pork chops for the fishermen and their families. We want them to know what great pork can taste like. 3. We want people to understand more about the jobs, benefits and economic opportunities we provide for our employees, local farmers and to the communities where we operate. 4. We want to let the Big Rock participants know that we are committed to protecting water quality and the environment. thebigrock.com

Scientists investigate post-release mortality of white marlin after extended periods of air exposure.

CHANCELLOR PROFESSOR OF MARINE SCIENCE AND CHAIR, DEPARTMENT OF F ISHER IES SCIENCE, V IRGINI A INST I TUTE OF MARINE SCIENCE

FISH OUT OF WATER New study adds scientific backing to a widely disputed argument about billfish

Many offshore anglers are unaware it is illegal in the United States to remove an Atlantic billfish from the water unless it is going to be retained. The management measure makes sense, after all, because billfish are adapted to respiring in the water and not out of it. But really, how much damage does a billfish 140 | BIG ROCK

thebigrock.com

sustain during the few minutes of air exposure required to take to a photo of an angler with their first billfish? A lot, according to recent research from the Virginia Institute of Marine Science. Graduate student Lela Schlenker was investigating the physiological effects of angling time for white

marlin caught on circle hooks. Fish in three categories of fight times (less than 10 minutes; 10 to 20 minutes; and more than 20 minutes) were removed from the water for about two minutes to obtain a fivemilliliter blood sample from the aorta and to attach a 30-day pop-up satellite archival tag. She observed unexpectedly high levels of postrelease mortality even after fights as short as five minutes, further determining that fight time was not a good predictor of mortality. Six of 21 fish died (28.6 percent), a

level of post-release mortality more than 15 times higher than observed in a previous study I performed in which only one of 59 tagged fish did not survive. The only differences between the studies were that in my study, fish did not undergo blood sampling and were not removed from the water. This poses the question: Was the increased mortality in the recent study due to the air exposure or the blood sampling? I received funding from NMFS to directly address the effects of air exposure on white marlin. The experiment aimed to place 21 30-day PSATs on white marlin caught on circle hooks and brought on deck for air-exposure times of one, three or five minutes. Last September, the crew of Healthy Grin, students Ben

Marcek and Willy Goldsmith, and I deployed 18 of 21 tags off Virginia. Their results demonstrated that air exposure greatly increases post-release mortality rates. Although sample sizes were not large, there was an increase in post-release mortality with time of air exposure: One of six fish with oneminute air exposures died; two of five fish exposed for three minutes died; and four of seven five-minute fish died. All but one of the seven mortalities occurred within 30 hours of release; only one of the seven mortalities was due to predation, which occurred to a five-minute fish 12 days after release. These two studies clearly show air exposures of even one or two minutes can prove deadly to white marlin and likely other billfish as well, so please keep them in the water where they belong!

The Elusive

Blue Marlin

The Blue Marlin is one of the largest game fish caught in the Atlantic Ocean. Individuals may exceed 13 feet and weigh over 1,300 pounds. The species is found throughout much of the western Atlantic, seasonally ranging in latitude from about 45°N to 35°S. There appear to be two seasonal concentrations, one from January through April in the southwestern Atlantic between latitudes 5° and 30°S, and the other from June through October, in the northwestern Atlantic between latitudes 10° and 35°N. Blue Marlin are most frequently caught off North Carolina, in the Gulf of Mexico, in the Caribbean Sea, and off Brazil. The body is dark blue to chocolate brown along the back and upper sides, changing to silvery white on the belly. On the sides there are approximately 15 pale blue vertical bars. Blue Marlin may be distinguished from

162 | BIG ROCK

thebigrock.com

White Marlin, Tetrapturus Albidus, by the dorsal and anal fins and by the fish’s size. The dorsal and anal fins of Blue Marlin are pointed, whereas White Marlin have rounded fins. The first dorsal fin of the Blue Marlin is much shorter relative to the body depth when compared to that of the White Marlin. Any marlin caught off the southeastern United States weighing over 150 pounds is almost certainly a Blue Marlin. Life history information on the species is scarce. Some generalities, however, may be made. Sexual maturity for males is attained when fish weigh about 76 pounds, 103 to 135 pounds for females. Blue Marlin spawn in the North Atlantic from July through September, and in the South Atlantic in February and March. The eggs and larvae are free floating. Longevity probably exceeds 15 years, although most fish caught are less than 10 years old. Age and size data are not available, but we do know that a Blue Marlin 4 feet long weighs about 44 pounds, one 8 feet long weighs about 319 pounds, and a fish 13 feet long weighs around 817 pounds. Blue Marlin feed on squid and a variety of pelagic fishes such as dolphin, tuna, mackerel, and flyingfish. Scientists argue whether the bill is used in feeding. However, divers have reported seeing marlins not only stun prey with their bills but also use them to spear fish. Impaled fish were dislodged by the marlin violently shaking its head, and then were swallowed.

FOUNDATION The Crystal Coast Tournament, Inc. dba, The Big Rock Blue Marlin Tournament has established a new 501 (c) (3) charitable organization known as The Big Rock Foundation, Inc. This entity is a wonderful vehicle for participants and the public to make tax-deductible contributions to a fund, which will support Big Rock charities on a sustaining and ongoing basis. “The tournament has always had participants who want to contribute to the charities we support, especially after a win” commented Joy Bell, Big Rock board member. “Lonnie Poole contributed $14,000 to our charity fund after his win in 1998 allowing the tournament more funds to help the victims of Hurricane Floyd that following fall. It is another way of giving back to those who are less fortunate”, Joy explained. The Big Rock appreciates any support you could contribute both during the tournament and all year through. In Memory Of Robert Christian Miltz

During his 8 years with the expansive Western Branch Diesel family, Rob Miltz’s kind-hearted presence and wisdom was enjoyed by many. Rob touched the hearts of literally hundreds of individuals throughout his career stretching back to his time spent in several positions with Volvo Marine, Detroit Diesel and MTU before becoming President of Jarrett Bay Yacht Sales which preceded his career with Western Branch Diesel. Rob accepted the position of Chief Operating Officer of WBD in 2012, where he assumed the executive position overseeing relationships with all our OEM’s, branches, managers and a great deal of our over 300 technicians and employees. An avid sailor and family man, Rob was also a great leader, an amazing friend, and a genuine joy to be around – always able to lift someone’s spirits or brighten their day. He will deeply be missed.

Thomas J. Cottle The Big Rock family mourns the loss of Thomas J. Cottle on December 29th, 2015. Tommy, a frequent Big Rock participant, was a true lover of boats and fishing. Tommy’s children marked the passage of time by remembering what boat (boats) their dad owned at each period of their life. One of Tommy’s fondest fishing memories was the crew of “Strike Two” finishing 3rd in Big Rock #40 1998. Several Big Rock board members and many friends remember the good times spent together recalling fishing and boating fun. We choose to remember Tommy that way. Capt. Bob Townsend

Robert Christian Miltz, 63, passed away July 8, 2015. Born in Amityville, NY, he was the son of the late Rev. Robert and Virginia Miltz. Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Patricia A. Miltz; sons, Jason and Kevin Miltz; sister, Jean (John) Dittman and Diane (Shirley Stickler) Miltz; and many nieces and nephews. He was blessed with a special group of friends he always considered family. He loved the water. One of the best parts of his life was owning a sailboat and sailing with his family. He had a wonderful way with animals and loved dogs.

Ed Daughety

Ed was an avid fisherman, enjoying the best Carteret County had to offer but more than that, he enjoyed the very art of fishing. He studied the equipment, the newest technology, the latest rod/reels, and most of all he loved tournament week at Big Rock. He and Linda are long-time supporters of Big Rock and tournament participants will miss his jolly laughter and conversation. thebigrock.com
