Message from New Zealand Rowing Association President The 2020 Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships, being held at Lake Karapiro, is not the largest event in the rowing calendar, and its format has changed since the establishment of Rowing Performance Centres (RPCs) 15 years ago. But, it continues to provide the sportâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s prestige opportunity for clubs to compete and establish the champions for the year in all rowing categories; and to benchmark themselves against the best. Where our most promising rowers have moved on to train with RPCs or row in composite crews, they all represent their clubs when competing in Championship crews and their achievements are recorded accordingly. 2020 is an Olympic year, and New Zealand has already qualified 9 boats for Tokyo and is still to compete for another 2 berths. This year we will watch the action and the drama with an eye to the performances of those whose ambitions are to crew those boats and represent their country in Tokyo. Regardless of whether they are novices or elites the commitment to competition is what binds the regatta and contributes to its spirit. The spectators too, most of whom have been part of the rowing family for many years are similarly serious contributors to the sport. Rowing is dependent on their support. We cannot run this event without the volunteers. This week Karapiro Rowing Incorporated (KRI), who install and manage the venue, provide regatta officials and on-water and off-water facilities our gratitude for their selfless work is deep. Equally, we could not have the Championships without the willing support of our sponsors. Amongst these, special mention should be made of Rocket Foods, Rowing NZâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s principal partner. Derek and Judy Jones have been exceptional sponsors of Rowing New Zealand from their several business ventures over the past 15 years and it is an honour to have Rocket Foods standing behind the Championships again this year. Message from the Team at Rocket Foods Welcome to the 2020 Rocket Foods New Zealand Rowing Championships. This event is the pinnacle of the domestic rowing season. We’re delighted to share this experience with you, especially during such an important year in the sporting calendar, Tokyo 2020 Olympics. This event never fails to excite or inspire us, and we’re delighted to welcome world class athletes and their supporters. We are extremely proud of the 2019 international achievements of the Rowing NZ crews. An impressive number of medals were won across the season, including notable ‘New Zealand firsts’ and several Olympic boat qualifications were gained. 2020 is sure to be an exciting year for New Zealand rowing. This week we expect to see top class performances as athletes demonstrate their commitment, skill and talent on the water. For the elite summer squad, this is an opportunity test their personal performance on water while continuing to build towards the Olympics in August. We wish them the best of luck. This event also provides the opportunity for our younger rowing talent to test their best performance against world class athletes with the opportunity to gain a trial for the Junior and U23 teams. A special mentioned to our Rocket Foods Ambassadors, who have agreed to join our family for a second year; Grace Prendergast, Kerri Gowler, Brooke Donoghue and Olivia Loe. These athletes have been selected due to their exemplary dedication to rowing, and their continued success. It’s fantastic to have a line-up of all female ambassadors. We wish them the best of luck throughout this event, and the rest of the season. It’s the turn of Lake Karapiro and Karapiro Rowing Inc. to host this year’s Rocket Foods New Zealand Championships. We’re delighted to be back at this world class facility that we’ve seen grow and develop over the years of our involvement. We hope the conditions are ideal for this competition. We would also like to take this opportunity to thank all those involved behind the scenes in this wonderful sport that help athletes reach their goals and make rowing in New Zealand such a pleasure to be involved in. The volunteers, family members, coaches and supporters whose passion and dedication form the foundation of events like this, and the success we’ve all enjoyed being a part of.
