Species as diverse as hummingbirds, elephants and human beings are all entitled, on average, to one billion heartbeats in a lifetime. Now, of course, the hummingbird, whose heart rate can reach 1,260 beats per minute, runs through its billion a lot more quickly than a pachyderm with its heart rate of about 30 beats per minute. And, there are many other factors that may disrupt progress toward a billion: congenital defects, disease, accidental deaths, warfare, etc. But all of us would do well to be mindful that heartbeats are not in infinite supply and to strive to make the most of our billion. Forty years ago, a family member suggested to me that when we are born, we are allotted a certain number of miles on our personal odometer, and it is up to us to choose either the fast lane or an alternative. Balance for Life Avoiding Falls is a Key to Staying Healthy for Seniors By Laura Bradley

“I’VE FALLEN AND I CAN’T GET UP!” While the famous line and the cheesy production values of this infamous television commercial might be funny to some, the issue it addresses is very serious — and, at times, fatal. Falls are no laughing matter for senior citizens; they are the sixth leading cause of death among older people, taking more lives than diabetes. For many, the fall itself isn’t what proves to be life threatening, but the aftermath. Balance problems tend to arise after the age of 75, and falling can lead to months of being bedridden after an injury. “A hip fracture is particularly dangerous because it’s a major fracture and will always require surgery to repair it,” explains Dr. Kenneth BrummelSmith, Charlotte Edwards Maguire professor and chair of Florida State University’s Department of Geriatrics. Even those who fall and suffer no injuries tend to see a lasting effect — a heightened fear of falling in the future. This fear can be paralyzing, often causing seniors with previously active, healthy lifestyles to greatly reduce their activity levels to prevent another fall. Brummel-Smith points out that this is a counterproductive action that weakens muscles, actually increasing the risk of falling. Over the years, increased awareness about the dangers of falling has led many to look into how to build and maintain good balance to secure their safety and independence. Don Rapp, a local balance expert and author of “Become Your Own Balance Coach,” a kinetic arts balance manual, urges that it is never too early to start thinking about balance: “You can start any time; even a little bit is better than nothing.” Rapp stresses the importance of an active lifestyle 12

and the avoidance of being sedentary for long periods of time. Even if your physical fitness is not great or you are afraid of putting stress on your body, there are plenty of lower-impact exercises that improve balance. “One (exercise) that’s been studied a lot is tai chi, where you’re moving really slow and you have to force yourself to balance. Those slow movements maintain the complicated neurologic interconnections so they decrease the falls,” Brummel-Smith suggests. Lifestyle changes don’t have to be major — even minor adjustments such as sitting on an exercise ball or standing instead of sitting in a desk chair can make a difference. Footwear is also very important. Seniors should choose good shoes that have good traction. Running shoes and shoes with knobby soles are best avoided in favor of smoother soles. Good shoes not only provide grip for stability, but also support improved posture. Another way to reduce the likelihood of falling is to make small changes in living spaces. Good lighting, a floor free of wires, rugs and loose items, securely nailed down thresholds and an elimination of clutter can make a huge difference. Another thing to consider is that pets tend to get underfoot and can pose a risk. Regardless of strength and preparation, accidents still happen. After a fall, it is crucial to listen to the body. If anything peculiar happens including loss of sensation in the feet or inability to determine their position, unconsciousness or tremors, Brummel-Smith says it is important to see a doctor. He also suggests reviewing current medications, because many such as antidepressants, tranquilizers and sleeping pills affect the brain and can harm balance.

TEST YOUR BALANCE 1. Start seated in a regular chair and time yourself. 2. Stand up without using your hands, then walk forward at a normal pace for about 30 feet. 3. Turn around and come back, sitting down without using your hands. This should take about 15 seconds. “If a person can’t get out of the chair without using their hands, and if they can’t make it that fast they’re at high risk for falls,” says Dr. Kenneth Brummel-Smith, FSU Department of Geriatrics.

Grab a piece of whole fruit such as an apple or orange to eat along with your granola or cereal bar as you run out the door.

Lunch » Start with a small green salad. that eating 2 1/2 cups of a variety of fruits and vegetables each day can help reduce a person’s risk of developing a second cancer. It can also help you get to a healthy weight, which can help reduce your risk of cancer and possibly cancer recurrence, too. But how can you fit in those critical servings of fruits and veggies throughout the day in a way that’s easy for you?

» Combine fruit with a bit of protein, such as sliced apple with a handful of almonds, for a snack that offers a serving of fruit and the staying power to carry you to your next meal.

Dinner » Bulk up the dishes you already love by mixing in some healthy vegetables. Try stirring cooked peas, carrots or pureed squash into your pasta or throw in chopped green peppers, onions or mushrooms. » Bring vegetables to the center of the plate by serving a meatless main dish, such as baked potatoes topped with broccoli and cheese, or vegetable lasagna. » Go global. Meditation MENDING THE MIND, ONE BREATH AT A TIME By Chay D. Baxley TAKE A DEEP BREATH. Relax your shoulders. Now your mind. Breathe. Breathe. Breathe. Any good yogi with his or her chakras in working order will tell you that if you can follow those simple directions, you can meditate. In fact, staying conscious of one’s breathing is a technique many meditation coaches refer to as “breath awareness meditation.” On the long journey to mastering this ancient practice, it’s the perfect place to start. “Usually I’ll just start with focusing on our breaths and teaching people how to be centered with just a simple breathing technique,” said Laurie Beck, owner of Santa Rosa Beach-based Pilates by the Sea. For novice meditation practitioners, experts agree that this soothing mental exercise is ideal for learning how to tune out the distractions and stressors of the modern world, one relaxing breath at a time. Once you figure out how to do so on the yoga mat, they say, it’s far easier to do the same in everyday life. “Just sit down and, for five minutes,

know that you’re breathing in and know that you’re breathing out,” explained Felicia McQuaid, owner of The Healing Clinic in Fort Walton Beach. “And in that, the mind is directed to one thing, and all those other thoughts will come and go, but your anchor is a breath in and a breath out.” It all sounds very relaxing, no doubt. But, technically speaking, what exactly is meditation? Who should try it out? And, besides breathing, how does one know where to begin? Defining this incredibly personal experience can be tricky and is perhaps best explained by what it is not. For instance, if you’re thinking meditation is about solving the world’s problems, or is solely aimed at somehow gaining religious insight or becoming enlightened, you couldn’t be more wrong. In reality, it’s just about you. “Meditation, to me, is putting the mind and the body in a calm place,” said Beck, who recently published her memoirs chronicling her struggles with cancer in her

autobiography, “I Am Living to Tell.” “It’s learning how to be quiet and allow whatever needs to come in to come in, but also to release what does not serve you.” With A-listers from Oprah Winfrey to Huffington Post editor-in-chief Arianna Huffington taking to the airwaves to give the art of meditation its just deserts, the practice has lost much of its “hippie-dippy” connotation. Even Johns Hopkins University is chiming in, with researchers there having recently released a review of 47 trials that suggested consistent meditation could have a lasting impact on psychological stressors such as anxiety, depression and even pain. Unlike many healthful living crazes, this trend is easily achievable for any fitness level and is as well suited for the young as it is for the young at heart. Both Beck and McQuaid agreed that having rambunctious or energetic youth decompress through meditation could be a holistic solution to a cognitive issue. While everyone’s path toward “successful” meditation is unique, there are a few standard steps you can take to get started. First, find a quiet, clean, calm space. This can just as easily be your living room as one of the Emerald Coast’s beautiful meditation and yoga studios — it’s all about where you’re most comfortable, both emotionally and with the cost of the classes. Position your body so you are both content and alert. Whether that means reclining entirely or sitting up cross-legged, it’s entirely up to you. If focusing on inhaling and exhaling leaves your mind wandering, try instead concentrating on a single word — repeating it, and only it, over and over in your mind. “Others focus on a mantra, a word,” Beck said. “That’s all they keep. Every time a message tries to come in, you don’t allow it.” It’s a technique she’s used many times before. Beck’s word? “Peace.” She admits, though, that any positive affirmation will do nicely. Repetition is key to finding focus and emotional relief through meditation. Incorporating the practice into your daily routine might not be feasible for some, but allotting 10 minutes per day can offer an otherwise hectic schedule a brief respite and have a lasting effect on the way one processes stress, a contributing factor to many serious medical conditions. “Just sit down and focus,” instructed McQuaid, also a published wellness author through her book “Uncommon Faith.” “The first stages of meditation are just to be able to focus.”
