Inside the Star Wars Empire
My West Side Story
By Bill Kimberlin
By George Chakiris, With Lindsay Harrison
A Memoir
Bill Kimberlin may refer to himself as “one of those names on the endless list of credits at the close of blockbuster movies.” In reality though, he’s a true insider on some of the most celebrated and popular movies and franchises of the past century. Jurassic Park. Star Trek. Jumanji. Schindler’s List. Saving Private Ryan. Even Forrest Gump. And, perhaps most notably, Star Wars. Inside the Star Wars Empire is the very funny and insightful tell-all about the two decades Kimberlin spent as a department director at LucasFilm Industrial Light and Magic (ILM), the special effects studio founded by the legendary filmmaker George Lucas. Bill Kimberlin is sought after as a lecturer and speaker on the subject of special effects.
A Memoir
George Chakiris famously played the gang leader Bernardo in the film version of West Side Story (1961), for which he won an Oscar for best supporting actor. My West Side Story is an insider’s look at how this theatrical and cinematic landmark evolved from a conversation in Jerome Robbins’ Manhattan apartment between him, Arthur Laurents and Leonard Bernstein to ten Oscars, three Golden Globes, two Tony Awards, and a Grammy. While also a memoir of Chakiris’s long and distinguished career, the emphasis is on West Side Story, which will be revived on Broadway in December of this year. George Chakiris appeared in dozens of plays, films, and TV shows before retiring in 1996.

Hemingway and Me
Letters, Anecdotes, and Memories of a Life-Changing Friendship By Jeffrey Lyons In this short book, Jeffrey Lyons recounts visits to Hemingway in Cuba (where “Papa” first taught him how to shoot a gun) as well as nights out with the great writer at such popular New York watering holes as the Stork Club and Toots Shor’s. Throughout the book Hemingway comes across as a hard-working, generous, and thoughtful man of letters, and not the gruff, hard drinking beast perpetually looking for a fight that he was often perceived as. Jeffrey Lyons grew up in a home visited by many of the greats of his father’s time. He has cohosted three national movie review shows—Sneak Previews, MSNBC’s At the Movies, and Reel Talk—in his fortyfive-year career continues in television, radio, and print.

Pitch Battles
Sport, Racism and Resistance By Lord Peter Hain and André Odendaal
Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers December 2020 496 pages Hardback 978-1-78661-522-0 $33.00 / £25.00
The organised disruption of the all-white 1969/70 South African rugby and cricket tours to Britain represented a significant challenge to apartheid politics. Led by future cabinet minister Peter Hain, the ‘Stop the Seventy Tour’ campaign brought about the cancellation of both tours, presaging white South Africa’s expulsion from the Olympics and the end of apartheid sport altogether. With his brand of attention-grabbing, direct action sports protest, the 19-year-old Hain emerged as a hero to some and enemy to others. Now, reflecting on these experiences with fifty years of hindsight, Lord Hain, together with South Africa’s foremost sports historian and fellow anti-apartheid activist André Odendaal, shows how decades of relentless international and domestic campaigning for equality led to a Springbok team captained by black athlete Siya Kolisi winning the 2019 Rugby World Cup. Peter Hain, a former Labour MP and Cabinet Minister, now a member of the House of Lords., has authored over twenty books André Odendaal is Honorary Professor in History and Heritage Studies at the University of the Western Cape.

Why “White Fragility” Is the Wrong Way to Think About Racial Inequality
Despite its wide acclaim and rapid acceptance, the theory of white fragility has received no serious and sustained scrutiny. This book argues that the theory is flawed on numerous fronts. The theory functions as a divisive rhetorical device to shut down debate. It relies on the flawed premise of implicit bias. It posits a faulty way of understanding racism. It has serious methodological problems. It conflates objectivity and neutrality. It exploits narrative at the expense of facts. It distorts many of the ideas upon which the theory relies. Jonathan D. Church is an economist, CFA charter holder, and writer. Jacques Fomerand had a lengthy career with the United Nations Department of Economic Affairs. When he retired in 2003, he was director of the North-American United Nations University Office in New York.

By Will Bashor
Will Bashor traces the final days of the prisoner registered only as Widow Capet, No. 280, a time that was a cruel mixture of grandeur, humiliation, and terror. Marie Antoinette’s reign amidst the splendors of the court of Versailles is a familiar story, but her final imprisonment in a fetid, dank dungeon is a little-known coda to a once-charmed life.
This riveting book explores the little-known intimate life of Marie Antoinette and her family in a world filled with intrigue, infidelity, and adultery. Will Bashor unveils the hedonistic atmosphere at Versailles as we learn the secret language of the queen’s fan and explore the hidden passageways and staircases of endless intrigue at the palace.

Paris on the Brink
The 1930s Paris of Jean Renoir, Salvador Dalí, Simone de Beauvoir, André Gide, Sylvia Beach, Léon Blum, and Their Friends
Paris, City of Dreams
Napoleon III, Baron Haussmann, and the Creation of Paris
By Mary McAuliffe
By Mary McAuliffe
Paris on the Brink vividly portrays the City of Light during the tumultuous 1930s, from the Wall Street Crash of 1929 to war and German Occupation. This was a dangerous and turbulent decade, during which workers flexed their economic muscle and their opponents struck back with increasing violence. As the divide between haves and have-nots widened, so did the political split between left and right, with animosities exploding into brutal clashes, intensified by the paramilitary leagues of the extreme right. Hitler, Stalin, and Mussolini escalated the increasingly hazardous international environment, while the civil war in Spain added to the instability of the times.
This book traces the profound transformation of the City of Light during Napoléon III’s Second Empire, as he and Georges Haussmann completely rebuilt Paris in less than two decades. Their breathtaking— and brutal— achievement was mirrored by dramatic social, cultural, and political changes, all brought to life through McAuliffe’s evocative narrative.

From designers to engineers, and even communication specialists and the builders who assembled these towering rockets, hundreds of thousands of people worked on getting humans to the Moon, yet only a few have been recognized for their contributions. Author George D. Morgan sets the record straight by shining a light on these forgotten figures of space travel. George D. Morgan (Santa Paula, CA) is the Playwright in Residence at the California Institute of Technology. Math Tricks
The Surprising Wonders of Shapes and Numbers
The Joy of Geometry
By Alfred S. Posamentier
By Alfred S. Posamentier
It is no secret that most people avoid mathematics, in large measure because elementary school teachers have never done much to motivate a love of the subject matter. In his latest book, mathematician Alfred S. Posamentier provides easily understandable, easily presentable and easily replicated tricks that one can do with mathematics. All that is required is the ability to do arithmetic, understand the very basics of algebra and geometry and have an open mind for probability.
A veteran math educator reveals the hidden fascinations of geometry and why this staple of math education is important. If you remember anything about high school geometry class, it’s probably doing proofs. But geometry is more than axioms, postulates, theorems, and proofs. It’s the science of beautiful and extraordinary geometric relationships--most of which is lost in high school classrooms where the focus is on the rigor of logically proving those relationships. This book will awaken readers to the appeal of geometry by placing the focus squarely on geometry’s visually compelling features and intrinsic elegance.

A brewer and Conservative politician, Houlding was a polarising yet fascinating figure. His financial input, first at Everton Football Club and then at Liverpool Football Club, provided the launch pad for the establishment of two nationally and internationally known sporting organizations. By the time of his death in 1902, both clubs had reached the pinnacle of the English game and Houlding’s place as the founding father of professional football in Merseyside was assured. David Kennedy, PhD, is a researcher and author whose focus is on football club governance.

Notes on the Writing of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder
By Janet Langhart Cohen
Edited by Robert L. Freedman
Janet Langhart Cohen’s Anne & Emmett: A One-Act Play is an imaginary conversation between Anne Frank and Emmett Till, both victims of racial intolerance and hatred. Frank is the thirteenyear-old Jewish girl whose diary provided a gripping perspective of the Holocaust. Till is the fourteen-year-old African-American boy whose brutal murder in Mississippi sparked the modern American civil rights movement.
The most frequently asked question about writing musicals is, “Which comes first, the music or the lyrics?” As anyone on Broadway will tell you, the answer is, “The book.” Tonywinning book writer Robert L. Freedman takes you through the process of writing a new musical, including story structure, song placement, dialogue, character development, and more that led to the creation of A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder.

Ever After
The Mikado to Matilda
By Barry Singer
By Thomas S. Hischak
Ever After remains far more than a detailed showby-show history. With nearly one hundred first-person interviews, it is also a definitive behind-thescenes account of how those shows were made. Singer invites the people who created the last forty years of musical theater on and off Broadway to tell their own stories. Ever After also closely documents the evolving contributions of women and persons of color to the past forty years of musical theater: their triumphs, their setbacks, and their centrality to musical theater's future.
This is the first book to look at the British musical theatre with reference to those London musicals that were also produced in New York City. The book covers 110 British musicals, ranging from 1750 to the present day, including the popular Gilbert and Sullivan comic operettas during the Victorian era, the Andrew Lloyd Webber mega-musicals of the late twentieth century, and today's biggest hits such as Matilda.
Forty Years of Musical Theater and Beyond, 1977–2020
Barry Singer has written extensively about the arts for the New York Times Arts & Leisure section, the New Yorker, New York magazine, the New York Times Magazine, Opera News, USA Today, the Huffington Post, and Playbill, among others. British Musicals on the New York Stage
Each London musical is discussed first as a success in England and then how it fared in America. The plots, songs, songwriters, performers, and producers for both the West End and the Broadway (or Off Broadway) production are identified and described. The discussion is sometimes critical, evaluating the musicals and why they were or were not a success in New York. Thomas S. The Best American Short Plays 2018–2019
The Best Men's Monologues from New Plays, 2020
Edited by John Patrick Bray
Edited by Lawrence Harbison
Pulitzer Prize–winning playwright Paula Vogel once said that theater helps us learn how to be comfortable with being uncomfortable with each other. Revolving around the theme of 'this is who we are," the one-act plays in this latest edition of the Best American Short Plays series (now in its ninth decade) explore the thoughtful ways in which playwrights are wrestling to make sense of our world today.
Renowned editor Lawrence Harbison brings together approximately one hundred never-beforepublished men’s monologues for actors to use for auditions and in class, all from recently produced plays. The selections include monologues from plays by both well-known playwrights such as Don Nigro, Theresa Rebeck, Rob Ackerman, Len Jenkin, Stephen Belber, and Tim Blake Nelson, and future stars such as David MacGregor, Reina Hardy, Chris Daftsios, Frank Baslo and Will Arbery.
The selected plays reflect how we perform our identities (private and public) and how we negotiate who we are with others who often have different perspectives, perspectives that make us uncomfortable. The theme of this collection is topical and apt—as our country continues to shore up its borders along party lines, from pride parades to strict abortion laws, from inclusivity in education curricula to children in detention centers at the US– Mexico border. John Patrick Bray is a playwright, screenwriter, and teacher at the University of Georgia in Athens, Georgia. The journey starts in London, Phileas Fogg’s home base, and follows Fogg’s itinerary to France and Italy before veering off in search of compelling wine stories in Syria, Georgia, and Lebanon. Every glass of wine tells a story, and so each of the eighty wines must tell an important tale. We head back across Northern Africa to Algeria, once the world’s leading wine exporter, before hopping across the sea to Spain and Portugal. We follow Portuguese trade routes to Madeira and then South Africa with a short detour to taste Kenya’s most famous Pinot Noir. Kenya? Pinot Noir? Really! Mike Veseth is professor emeritus of international political economy at the University of Puget Sound.

Seinfeld
Star Wars
By Paul Arras
By Josef Benson
Seinfeld: A Cultural History explores the show’s history with an engaging look at the show’s legendary co-creators, its supporters (and skeptics) at NBC, and its awardwinning cast. By all the traditional rules of television, Seinfeld never should have made it to the air. Paul Arras pays close attention to the writers and writing of the show, offering a fresh look at the episodes themselves and assessing its broader cultural impact. Throughout he also dissects the show’s main quartet and the other memorable characters that foursome interacted with over the show’s eight seasons. With deep perception and good humor, this book considers what the adventures of Jerry, George, Kramer, and Elaine reveal about the nineties and what messages they pass along to twenty-first century viewers.
Star Wars fans both love and hate Star Wars and George Lucas. He is equally responsible for their pleasure and pain. Star Wars:The Triumph of Nerd Culture delves deeper into the Star Wars universe than any book has gone before, including an illuminating look into why Lucas sold Lucasfilm to the Disney Corporation and how the sale affected the franchise. After reading this book, fans will never be able to watch Star Wars in the same way again.

A Book about the Film Monty Python’s The Meaning of Life
Black Oscars
All the References from Americans to Zulu Nation
From Mammy to Minny, What the Academy Awards Tell Us about African Americans
By Darl Larsen
By Frederick W. Gooding, Jr.
This reference identifies and explains the cultural, historical, and topical allusions in the film Monty Python’s Meaning of Life, the Pythons’ third and final original feature as a complete group. In this resource, virtually every allusion and reference that appears in the film is identified and explained —from Britain’s waning Empire through the Winter of Discontent to Margaret Thatcher’s secondterm mandate, from playing fields to battle fields, and from accountant pirates to sacred sperm.
Gooding provides a thorough analysis and overview of black people that were nominated for their Hollywood roles, going decade by decade in highly accessible language. The book shows how the Oscars are a litmus test, ultimately reflecting what degree our society has truly embraced diversity within the hallowed confines of our sacred imaginations. Frederick W. Gooding, Jr. is an Assistant Professor within the Honors College at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, TX.
Darl Larsen is professor in the Media Arts department and the Center for Animation at Brigham Young University.

Olivia de Havilland and the Golden Age of Hollywood
The Films of Martin Scorsese
Gangsters, Greed, and Guilt
By Ellis Amburn
By Eric San Juan
This is classic Hollywood history as told through the life and career of one of its most iconic actresses. The book benefits tremendously from the author’s meeting with Olivia de Havilland after he was assigned to handle her projected memoir at the Delacorte Press in 1973. Amburn also knew many of the key figures in her life and career, a veritable pantheon of Hollywood royalty from the 30s, 40s, and 50s: Jimmy Stewart, George Cukor, and David O. Selznick, and he was an editor at William Morrow when the company published the autobiography of de Havilland’s difficult sister Joan Fontaine.
The Films of Martin Scorsese: Gangsters, Greed, and Guilt looks at the 24 features directed by Martin Scorsese in chronological order, providing an overview with some historical context, followed by a brief synopsis, and other details per film. An accessible analysis that dives deep into the themes, techniques, and innovations of each movie
A 1954 graduate of Texas Christian University, Ellis Amburn worked as a reporter for Newsweek before going into the book publishing industry. The Voyages of Star Trek
A Mirror on American Society through Time By K.M. Heath and A. S. Carlisle
Imprint: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers January 2021 228 pages Hardback 978-1-5381-3696-6 $35.00 / ÂŁ27.00 eBook 978-1-5381-3697-3 $33.00 / ÂŁ25.00
Star Trek emerged alongside mini-skirts, bellbottoms, and VW vans; flourished in the shadow of Madonna, big hair, and greed; and expanded with computers, Beanie Babies, and religious revitalization. Star Trek survived the culture shock of 9/11 and experienced a revival in the era of yoga pants, hybrid cars, and Starbucks. After more than 5 decades, Star Trek is alive and well, still voyaging through space and time. But, why is that? How has this science fiction franchise managed to anticipate and adapt to such rapid culture change? Kathleen M. Heath is an associate professor of anthropology at Indiana State University and the author of numerous articles on topics in archaeology, evolution, behavioral ecology, culture, and genetics. Ann S. Carlisle has a B.A. in anthropology. While a student at Indiana State University she began integrating her academic concentration in cultural diversity with her keen interest in science/speculative fiction, ultimately researching Star Trek as a phenomenon of American culture.
