On Marilyn

Her unforgettable image is seared into the minds of fans everywhere, and her private life continues to inspire headlines and controversy, but Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous—and misunderstood—women in the world who remains a mystery to most people. On Marilyn cuts through the rumors and myths to present the real person behind the queen of movies and pop culture.

From her chaotic childhood in Depression-era Los Angeles to her rise in the world of Hollywood and finally her untimely death—On Marilyn explores the legendary star’s family history, connection to the movies from childhood, her personal life as an adult, and her interest in continually educating herself.

On Marilyn is compulsively readable—instead of chronological dates and dry accounts of events, there are chapters about specific aspects of her life and career. What did Marilyn like to eat? What types of books did she read? Was she really plus size? Did she nearly bring down a political empire? And how did she actually die? This book explores everything—and vividly brings to light the truth about the world’s greatest movie star.

Elisa Jordan is a respected writer, editor, and historian whose work has appeared in a variety of publications. She has been studying Marilyn Monroe since the age of five, after seeing Gentlemen Prefer Blondes on TV, and is currently regarded as a leading authority on Marilyn. She also gives tours devoted to Marilyn, Jean Harlow, the Doors, and rock ’n’ roll in Hollywood, a role that led her to help cofound the Los Angeles Tour Guides Association. She lives in Los Angeles.

The Last Charge of the Rough Rider

Theodore Roosevelt’s Final Days

There have been many books on Theodore Roosevelt, but there are none that solely focus on the last years of his life. Racked by rheumatism, a ticking embolism, pathogens in his blood, a bad leg from an accident, and a bullet in his chest from an assassination attempt, in the last two years of his life from April 1917 to January 6, 1919, he went from the great disappointment of being denied his own regiment in World War I, leading a suicide mission of Rough Riders against the Germans, to the devastating news that his son Quentin had been shot down and killed over France. Suffering from grief and guilt, marginalized by world events, the great glow that had been his life was now but a dimming lantern. But TR’s final years were productive ones as well: he churned out several “instant” books that promoted U.S. entry into the Great War, and he was making plans for another run at the Presidency in 1920 at the time of his death. Indeed, his political influence was so great that his opposition to the policies of Woodrow Wilson helped the Republican Party take back the Congress in 1918. However, as William Hazelgrove points out in this book, it was Roosevelt’s quest for the “vigorous life” that, ironically, may have led to his early demise at the age of sixty. “The Old Lion is dead,” TR’s son Archie cabled his brother on January 6, 1919, and so, too, ended a historic era in American life and politics.

William Elliott Hazelgrove has a master’s in History and is the best-selling author of ten novels and seven narrative nonfiction books, including Madame President: The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson, Forging a President: How the West Created Teddy Roosevelt, and Al Capone and the 1933 World’s Fair. He lives in Chicago, Illinois.

America’s Youngest Ambassador

The Cold War Story of Samantha Smith’s Lasting Message of Peace

In 1982, amid the nuclear paranoia that engulfed the US and the Soviet Union, Samantha Smith, a fifth grader from Manchester, Maine, wrote a letter to the Kremlin asking the Soviet leader if he was going to start a war. When Pravda, the biggest Soviet newspaper, published her letter—and Samantha received an unprecedented invitation to visit the Soviet Union —her family embarked on a historic journey that helped transform the hearts and minds of two nations on a collision course.

Today, a nuclear war seems like a possibility once again. The story of a young American girl’s letter to the Soviet leader and her innocent curiosity about the other side of the Iron Curtain holds an important lesson for every American: to never stop questioning the status quo, and to recognize that the responsibility for the preservation of peace is not only the purveyance of the government. America’s Youngest Ambassador provides insights into a forgotten era and has an important message for young people who strive to be more involved in facilitating change, both locally and worldwide.

Lena Nelson is a writer, teacher and citizen historian who has spent the past seventeen years researching and documenting the story of Samantha Smith and creating www.SamanthaSmith.info, the online archive of news articles and videos about Samantha Smith. She was a nominee for the Allegra Johnson Prize and has worked with numerous news, educational, and humanitarian organizations around the world. She has degrees in International Studies and Linguistics and lives with her family in Southern California.

Thrive with a Hybrid Workplace

Step-by-Step Guidance from the Experts

The great debate of remote versus office begins with the myth of separate worlds we all live in: work-life and personal-life. For centuries, work and home were separated by physically going to and from the office. The separation was actually a myth because while we went between two different locations, each of us is one person. Our bosses may have not known anything about our family or friends, and vice versa, but we did. Two worlds. One person. Multiply that reality by 6 million workplaces in the United States alone, and it becomes clear how much of a difference to employee and employer satisfaction—and GDP—a healthy hybrid model for work might represent.

In this book, Julie Kantor and Felice Ekelman deliver expert guidance on balancing the inherent opportunities for growth with the risks inherent in a hybrid workplace. Given hybrid work is now the norm, leaders need to ensure that remote work is productive and employees are engaged, both within legal guardrails.

Felice Ekelman is a Principal of Jackson Lewis PC, where she practices employment law on behalf of companies. She currently serves as a member of the Advisory Board of the Sheridan Libraries and Museums. Felice is a well-known employment attorney and is a sought-after speaker. Felice resides in New York City.

Julie P. Kantor, Ph.D., is a business psychologist, executive coach, advisor and founder of JP Kantor Consulting. As a sought-after expert in leadership, resilience, emotional intelligence and the interface between work and personal lives, Julie speaks and advises organizations ranging from small startups to global corporations. She has authored 50+ seminars which have trained thousands of employees in work-related topics. Julie resides in New York City.

Homegrown Flax and Cotton

DIY Guide to Growing, Processing, Spinning & Weaving Fiber to Cloth

From seed to shirt, Cindy Conner shows you how to plant, grow, harvest, process, spin, and weave cotton and flax into cloth from which you can sew your own clothes. And since cotton and flax are made from plants, when your clothes’ usefulness has passed they can also return to the environment without causing harm—a truly renewable and sustainable option for clothing.

Whether you live in colder climates where flax can thrive, or warmer climates where cotton does best, there is a sustainable option (or two, if you live in the temperate zone) for you. And it takes much less space than you would think; a backyard garden will do! This complete guide includes in-depth instructions on growing and harvesting, preparing the fiber for spinning, the spinning process for each fiber; the basics of weaving cloth; suggestions on patterns and how to weave the pieces you need for clothing; and how to sew your woven pieces together.

Cindy Connor received a degree in Home Economics Education from Ohio State University in 1975. She was instrumental in establishing the sustainable agriculture program at Reynolds Community College in Goochland, VA, while teaching there from 1999-2010. She had often sewn her own clothes, and her interest turned to sustainable clothing. In 2011, she learned to spin, then to weave, in order to turn her homegrown cotton into clothes. Since many people can’t grow cotton due to climate limitations, she added flax (which has a wider range) to her garden and learned to turn it into linen so that she could teach this process to others. She is the author of Grow a Sustainable Diet and Seed Libraries and Other Means of Keeping Seeds in the Hands of the People

Convoy to Morocco

A Riley Fitzhugh Novel

Riley Fitzhugh is temporarily made officer in charge of the naval guard on board the SS Carlota, a merchant ship assigned to deliver bombs and aviation fuel to the Sebou River during Operation Torch. The Atlantic crossing was supposed to be in convoy, but Carlota breaks down after surviving a U-boat attack and is forced to limp along alone. At the mouth of the Sebou River, Riley rejoins the Nameless, an anti–U-boat vessel, which has come down from her refit in Scotland to join the Torch attack. When the Nameless is tasked with delivering a company of Army Rangers to capture the French air force base, she and her crew must force their way through the boom guarding the mouth of the river and pass through the gunfire from the French fort on the hills above. Along the way, Riley runs into an old flame or two—one an enemy agent, the other a war correspondent from Cuba.

Terry Mort is a graduate of Princeton University and the University of Michigan, where he received an MA in English and began working on his PhD. After grad school, he served as an officer in the US Navy. Deployed to Southeast Asia, he saw a variety of action there. Mort has written four nonfiction histories that were extensively reviewed in the national press and widely praised. He has also written several novels, one of which, The Monet Murders (McBooks Press), introduces the character of Riley Fitzhugh, Hollywood private investigator.

Hidden Cargo

A Novel

Five months after the end of the Civil War, Acting Navy Lieutenant Everett Townsend is awaiting discharge in Key West. The war has left him bitter with little direction. Returning from a routine supply mission from Fort Jefferson in the Dry Tortugas, he and his men are caught in a hurricane. While seeking safety, Townsend spots a shipwreck in the Marquesas Keys. Upon investigating, they discover the grisly sight of a cargo hold filled with dead bodies. When Townsend reports this unsettling incident to his preoccupied naval commander in Key West, he finds himself alone in suspecting foul play, facing a mystery that takes him from the backwaters of Florida to the interior of Cuba.

The murder of an American sailor in a Cuban port provides Townsend with more clues even as it threatens to pull him into the dangerous undertow of Cuban politics. To pursue justice, Townsend agrees to become a government informant and goes to live with his Spanish grandmother at her sugar plantation in the Cuban countryside. There he continues his investigations and finds himself facing an impossible choice between the Cuban-American woman he loves and his traditionbound Spanish grandmother. As he grapples with this clash of personalities, Townsend uncovers the details of a conspiracy which forces him to come face to face with his own family’s close ties to slavery.

Robin Lloyd’s early years were spent on the island of St. Croix, where his parents owned a dairy farm and milk plant. As a boy, he grew up sailing in the Caribbean. Lloyd was a foreign correspondent for NBC News for many years, reporting mostly from Latin America and Africa. The Vatican Candidate

A Harper & Blake Mystery

April 1945: Europe is in ruins and Berlin is burning. As the Red Army closes in on the last few blocks surrounding the Fuhrerbunker, a famous aviatrix lands her light aircraft in the center of the shattered German capital. Two days later she takes off again. With her is a man called Heinrich Bechmann, SS mass killer and personal bodyguard of the German chancellor Adolf Hitler—and with Bechmann is a file of documents.

Nearly a century later, in the spring of 2020, Pope Francis announces that he intends to open the Vatican Secret Archives to the public. A week later, masked gunmen kill five people at an isolated Jesuit retreat in the mountains of Sicily. And two weeks after that, the body of a celebrated British historian is discovered in a beach house on Long Island. Aiden Blake, ex-Royal Marine and brother of the dead historian, believes there is a mysterious link between these events, stretching across seventy-five years of history. He’s right—and history itself will provide the clues. The trail will lead him and his brother’s New Yorkbased researcher, Hannah Harper, across the Atlantic to the hidden bunkers of Berlin, a Gothic castle in the South Tyrol, Rome, Sicily, and deep into the past in a bid to find his brother’s killers—and expose a neo-Fascist plot to kill the present Pope and replace him with one more conducive to the party’s own political views and ambitions.

Seth Hunter lives in London and is the author of six highly acclaimed naval adventures set against the canvas of the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars. One of his children’s stories, In a Pig’s Ear, was named as one of the Guardian’s six best novels of the year. He has written and directed many historical dramas for British television, radio, and the theatre.

Life Before and After Vaccines

The History, Controversy, and Efficacy of the Most Important Health Breakthroughs

The COVID-19 pandemic has moved conversations about vaccines from the realm of parenting message boards into front-page headlines and presidential speeches. The issue of vaccines now affects how all of us raise children, do business, and make important life choices.

In Life Before and After Vaccines, Stacy Mintzer Herlihy presents the history of vaccines and the equally long history of vaccination opposition. The author takes a look at diseases like chickenpox that no longer pose threats to many American children and segues into the response of the Founding Fathers to the dangers of smallpox and other vaccine-preventable diseases. She explores the many ways in which lack of access to vaccination has meant societal change and examines incidences such the measles epidemic that haunted Disneyland in 2019.

Life Before and After Vaccines presents the history, controversy, and efficacy of the most important health breakthroughs. The book helps readers make sense of the current COVID-19 crisis and offers vital information such as new research on vaccines and autism on which to base further decisions about vaccination.

Stacy Mintzer Herlihy is a freelance writer and public health advocate. She is a Shot@Life Champion and founder of New Jersey Parents For Vaccines. Land of War

A History of European Warfare from Achilles to Putin

In this colorful new telling of European warfare—and indeed European history through the continent’s all too numerous wars and conflicts—William Nester describes millennia of armed conflict. He covers the “greatest hits” of military history both ancient and current: Thermopylae, the Peloponnesian War, the wars of the Roman Empire across the continent, the Battle of Hastings, the Crusades, Agincourt, Waterloo, Napoleon and Wellington, the Somme, the Spanish Civil War, Stalingrad and Normandy, Churchill, Hitler, and Stalin, Bosnia, and up through Putin’s attempts to redraw the map of Europe. Nester highlights how warfare has been deeply entwined with European statesmanship and undergirds modern institutions such as NATO and the European Union. Europe’s sense of itself is bound up in its military history.

William Nester is a professor at St. John’s University in Queens, New York. He has written more than two dozen books on global politics/power and the history of warfare, including books about Europe’s colonial wars in North America, Napoleon, Lincoln, Theodore Roosevelt, Charles De Gaulle, and Winston Churchill. His book George Rogers Clark: “I Glory in War” received a 2013 Distinguished Writing Award from the Army Historical Foundation; bestselling author Douglas Brinkley praised it as “an important contribution to early U.S. history.”

Southeast Asia in China

Historical Entanglements and Contemporary Engagements

As part of “China’s south,” Southeast Asia has historically assumed a peripheral position when juxtaposed against the power of the Chinese state. In the existing scholarly literature, the power asymmetry is reflected in the ostensible bias where most studies are about China’s presence in or engagement with Southeast Asia rather than the reverse; studies on the presence or influence of Southeast Asia in China have been a marginal enterprise.

The present volume aims to fill this void by exploring the historical entanglements and contemporary engagements of Southeast Asia(ns) in China through a Southeast Asian perspective. As China seeks to understand Southeast Asia’s presence in the country on its own terms, it is also engaged in a process of self-discovery and defining where and how it should stand in relation to the region. Departing from the discourse of China as the a priori center dominating the scholarship on China–Southeast Asia relations, the present volume hopes to subvert such power relations in order to bring fresh perspectives on the historical and contemporary contributions of Southeast Asia(ns) in China.

The Greatest Polar Exploration Stories Ever Told

The Greatest Polar Exploration Stories Ever Told is a visceral, exciting, and stunning collection of twelve stories recounting the bravery, resoluteness, and strength of the men who willingly traversed frozen hells to be the first to reach the North or South Pole. It is a collection that will both inspire and inform—and answer questions about the limits of human endurance.

The newspaper advertisement for volunteers to accompany Ernest Shackleton on his planned traverse of Antarctica in 1914 was frank in its offering: “Men wanted for hazardous journey. Low wages, bitter cold, long hours of complete darkness. Safe return doubtful. Honour and recognition in event of success.” Still, hundreds applied. There were few chances left to be the first to reach the last challenge on Earth.

As the twentieth century came of age, explorers had uncovered most of the world’s mysteries, sailing to the far corners of the globe, ascending many of its most forbidding peaks, crossing its greatest deserts and penetrating its thickest jungles. Frozen, alien, inhospitable, dangerous, and close to impossible to reach, there were only two tiny dots on the globe that human beings had not yet set foot on—the North and South Poles.

Tibet’s Fate

Tibet’s Fate examines the issue of the political fate of Tibet. It is told by Tibetans themselves as well as by the author from his own experiences. The title is not meant to imply that the current fate of Tibet is an ultimate destiny, or even that Tibet’s fate is already decided. It is only meant in the sense that if Tibet’s fate is now determined, it has been determined not by the Tibetan people but by those of China. If it is to be determined by China, then Tibet’s fate is indeed to be an integral part of China. However, if Tibet’s fate were to be decided by the Tibetan people, if they were allowed their right to national self-determination, then it would definitely be different.

Given all the criteria for independent statehood—territory, culture, language, religion and government—Tibet surely should be an independent state. Tibetan territory, defined by altitude, was the very nearly exclusively habitation of people who identified themselves as Tibetans. Those people share a distinct culture, language and religion. They had a central government that directly administered the territory of Central Tibet and indirectly that of Kham and Amdo. Had Tibetans been allowed to determine for themselves their political status; that is, if they had the right to selfdetermination as specified in the most fundamental documents of international law, there is no doubt that they would have chosen independence. Whatever the flaws of the Tibetan social and political systems, Tibet should have had the right to determine its own fate, and could have done so, until deprived of that right by China.

The book also examines the sensitive question of the nature of the Tibetan political system and its role in the fate that has befallen Tibet. The author concludes that the Tibetan political system of Chosi Shungdrel, or the unity of religion and politics, is implicated in the failure of Tibet to maintain its independence.

Comet Madness

How the 1910 Return of Halley’s Comet (Almost) Destroyed Civilization

Halley’s Comet visits the earth every seventy-five years. Since the dawn of civilization, humans had believed comets were evil portents. In 1705, Edmond Halley liberated humanity from these primordial superstitions (or so it was thought), proving that Newtonian mechanics rather than the will of the gods brought comets into our celestial neighborhood. Despite this scientific advance, when Halley’s Comet returned in 1910 and astronomers announced that our planet would pass through its poisonous tail, newspapers gleefully provoked a global hysteria that unfolded with tragic consequences.

In Comet Madness, author and historian Richard J. Goodrich examines the 1910 appearance of Halley’s Comet and the ensuing frenzy sparked by media manipulation, bogus science, and outright deception. The result is a fascinating and illuminating narrative history that underscores how we behave in the face of potential calamity—then and now.

Richard J. Goodrich earned his Ph. D, at St. Andrews and spent twenty years teaching ancient history in Britain and the United States. The author of six academic books, he now writes about early twentieth century history. Visit the author at RichardJGoodrich.com

Political scandals have become an indelible feature of the American political system since the creation of the republic more than two centuries ago. This book surveys both the most infamous scandals (e.g., Watergate and the Bill Clinton-Monica Lewinsky affair) as well as more obscure episodes (e.g., the Daniel Sickles and Philip Barton Key II incident, and the Yazoo land fraud) in an effort to understand how these incidents have altered the course of American political history.

Linguistic Fingerprints

How Language Creates and Reveals Identity

How much of ourselves do we disclose when we speak or write? A person’s accent may reveal, for example, whether they hail from Australia, or Ireland, or Mississippi. But it’s not just where we were born—we divulge all sorts of information about ourselves and our identity through language. Level of education, gender, age, and even aspects of our personality can all be reliably determined by our vocabulary and grammar. To those who know what to look for, we give ourselves away every time we open our mouths or tap on a keyboard.

But how unique is a person’s linguistic identity? Can language be used to identify a specific person? To identify—or to exonerate—a murder suspect? To determine who authored a particular book? The answer to all these questions is yes. Forensic and computational linguists have developed methods that allow linguistic fingerprinting to be used in law enforcement. Similar techniques are used by literary scholars to identify the authors of anonymous or contested works of literature. Many people have heard that linguistic analysis helped to catch the Unabomber, or to unmask an anonymous editorialist—but how is it done?

Linguistic Fingerprints explains how these methods were developed and how they are used to solve forensic and literary mysteries. But these techniques aren’t perfect, and the book will also include some cautionary tales about mistaken linguistic identity.

And God Knows the Soldiers

Islamic Law in Tradition and Today, Second Edition

This is a substantially expanded edition of the author’s seminal work The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourses: A Contemporary Case Study

Beginning with the case study of a Muslim basketball player who refused to stand up while the American national anthem was playing, the author documents the disintegration of the Islamic juristic tradition, and the prevalence of authoritarianism in contemporary Muslim discourses. The author analyzes the rise of what he describes as puritan and despotic trends in modern Islam, and asserts that such trends nullify the richness and diversity of the Islamic tradition. By declaring themselves the true soldiers of God and the defenders of religion, Muslim puritan movements are able to degrade women, eradicate critical thinking, and empty Islam of its moral content.

Anchoring himself in the rich Islamic jurisprudential tradition, the author argues for upholding the authoritativeness of the religious text without succumbing to authoritarian methodologies of interpretation. Ultimately, the author asserts that in order to respect the integrity of the Divine laws it is necessary to adopt rigorous analytical methodologies of interpretation, and to reinvestigate the place of morality in modern Islam.

Khaled Abou El Fadl is Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor in Islamic Law at the University of California, Los Angeles School of Law, where he is also chair of the Islamic Studies program. He was named a Carnegie Scholar in Islamic Law, has served on the U.S. Commission for International Religious Freedom, and served on the board of directors for Human Rights Watch, among other honors. Animal Ethics and Animal Law

Animal law is a growing discipline, as is animal ethics. In this wide-ranging book, scholars from around the world address the intersections between the two. Specifically, this collection focuses on pressing moral issues and how law can protect animals from cruelty and abuse. A project of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics, the book is edited by the Oxford Centre’s directors, Andrew Linzey and Clair Linzey, and features contributions from many of its fellows. Divided into three sections, the work explores historical perspectives and ethical–legal issues such as “personhood” and “property” before focusing on five practical case studies. The volume introduces readers to the interweaving between these subjects and should act as a spur to further interdisciplinary work.

Andrew Linzey is director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics and has been a member of the faculty of theology in the University of Oxford for twenty-eight years.

Clair Linzey is deputy director of the Oxford Centre for Animal Ethics. She is a professor of animal theology at the Graduate Theological Foundation.

Superheroes! is the ultimate reference book about the men and women in tights who fight for what’s right and the comic book phenomenon that conquered the world.

From their origins in stories created by barely grown men during an era of global war and printed on cheap paper for consumption by children, superheroes have grown into a popular culture whirlwind that has attracted millions of fans and crossed over into every form of media. Encompassing early coming books, indie outliers, and the mammoth fictional universes managed by DC and Marvel, Superheroes! chronicles the rise of a distinctly American invention, the modern-day evolution of the myths and legends of old.

Superman, Batman, Spider-Man, Iron Man, Wonder Woman, the Flash, Captain America, X-Men, the Justice League and the Avengers—they all represent our greatest hopes, and sometimes our darkest fantasies. Pop culture expert Brian Solomon tells a story that goes from the Golden, Silver and Bronze Ages of comic book history right up to the Modern Age of multimillion-dollar Hollywood movies, and beyond. Perhaps no fictional genre has endured and blossomed over the past eighty years the way superheroes have. Learn all about the creators who have brought them to life: artists like Jack Kirby and Jim Lee, writers like Stan Lee and Alan Moore, actors like Christopher Reeve and Robert Downey Jr., and directors like Tim Burton and Joss Whedon. They’re all here, in all their high-flying, eye-zapping, goon-punching glory. Up, up and away!

Brian Solomon is pop culture and film writer and English teacher with a master’s specialization in Shakespeare. He lives in Connecticut, with his wife and two children.

Punk Revolution!

An Oral History of Punk Rock Politics and Activism

Punk rock has been on the frontlines of activism since exploding on the scene in the 1970s. Punk Revolution! is the most wide-ranging and provocative look at punk rock as a social change movement over the past forty-five years, told through first-hand accounts of roughly 250 musicians and activists.

John Malkin brings together a wide cast of characters that include major punk and post-punk musicians (members of The Ramones, Bad Religion, Crass, Dead Kennedys, Patti Smith’s band, Gang of Four, Sex Pistols, Iggy & the Stooges, Bikini Kill, Talking Heads, The Slits, and more), important figures influenced by the punk movement (Noam Chomsky, Kalle Lasn, Keith McHenry, Marjane Satrapi, Laurie Anderson, Kenneth Jarecke), and underground punk voices. These insightful, radical, and often funny conversations travel through rebellions against Margaret Thatcher, Ronald Reagan, Donald Trump, and Vladimir Putin and to punk activism that has taken on nuclear war, neoliberalism, modern warfare, patriarchy, white supremacy, the police, settler colonialism, and more. The result is a fresh and unique history of punk throughout the ages.

John Malkin is a musician, activist, filmmaker, photographer, and radio & print journalist. He is the author of Sounds of Freedom: Musicians on Social Change & Spirituality, and his interviews and writings have been published in many magazines including Punk Planet, Z Magazine, In These Times, Ode, Spirituality & Health, Shambhala Sun, Tricycle, The Sun, and Sojourners. Silhouettes And Shadows

The Secret History of David Bowie’s Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)

Silhouettes and Shadows explores the secret history of David Bowie’s 1980 album Scary Monsters (And Super Creeps)—an avant-garde pop album rich with tension and fear which closed Bowie’s golden years of the 1970s.

Featuring exclusive interviews with close collaborators, this book uncovers the studio stories and hidden meanings behind Scary Monsters as Bowie stood at the crossroads of the new decade. Caught between the experimental Berlin Trilogy (Low, Heroes, and Lodger) and 1983’s smash hit “Let’s Dance,” it is here Bowie reached the end of his long road to recovery, overcame his demons, and buried the ghosts of his past to become a global superstar reaching millions of new fans.

Scary Monsters’ hit singles “Fashion” and “Ashes to Ashes” would break Bowie back into the charts, confronting listeners with chaotic images of paranoia, addiction, social breakdown, and state control. Bowie would ride a new wave of inspiration with the post-punk of Joy Division, synth-pop of Gary Numan, and Culture Club’s sexual emancipation to the Blitz Kids and the New Romantics that followed in his wake. Marking a final goodbye to Space Oddity’s lost hero, Major Tom, and the personas of Ziggy Stardust, Halloween Jack, Plastic Soul (the Gouster) and The Thin White Duke, in this rare moment, David Bowie, the pierrot clown of everyday romance, suffering, and song, let his mask slip to reveal David Jones, the man within.

Adam Steiner studied philosophy at the University of Aberdeen and writes about music, street-art culture, architecture, poetry, and transgressive fiction. His previous books include Into the Never: Nine Inch Nails and the Creation of the Downward Spiral, a deep dive into the cultural impact of the seminal album. He lives in London.

When Rock Met Disco

The Culture War that Saved Pop Music

Disco began as a gay, black, and brown underground New York City party music scene, which alone was enough to ward off most rockers. The difference between rock and disco was as sociological as it was aesthetic. At its best, disco was galvanizing and affirmative. Its hypnotic power to uplift a broad spectrum of the populace made it the ubiquitous music of the late 1970s. Disco was a primal and gaudy fanfare, an exclamatory musical passageway into the future.

1978 was the apex of the record industry. Rock music, commercially and artistically, had never been more successful. At the same time, disco was responsible for roughly 40% of the records on Billboard’s Hot 100, thanks to the largest-selling soundtrack of all time in Saturday Night Fever.

When most 70s artists “went disco,” it was the relatively few daring rockers who had the most impact, bringing their intensity and personality to a faceless phenomenon. Rock stars who “went disco” crossed a musical Rubicon and forever smashed cultural conformity. The on-going dance-rock phenomenon demonstrates the impact of this unique place and time. The disco crossover forever changed rock.

Steven Blush has written five books about rock music and his journalism has appeared in over fifty publications, like Spin, Details, Interview, Village Voice, The Times of London, and Paper Magazine. He got his start in the early 1980s promoting punk rock shows in Washington, D.C. and then moved to New York City in 1986, where he published fifty-two issues of Seconds Magazine through 2000. He wrote and produced the documentary American Hardcore which premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2006.

A Tale of Two Cranes

Lessons Learned from 50 Years of the Endangered Species Act

It has been 50 years since the United States attempted a conservation revolution with the passing of the Endangered Species Act in 1973. It has had an enormous impact on conservation theory and practice throughout the world but worsening government budget constraints, public inattention, and a continuous string of setbacks experienced within numerous rehabilitation initiatives conspire to challenge the conventional thinking on endangered species management like never before.

A Tale of Two Cranes serves as a launching pad for better understanding the progress and pitfalls inherent in endangered species management. Author Nathanial Gronewold explains how we got here, where things stand today, and what lessons conservationists must take to heart as the world continues to struggle to put a halt to an ongoing global extinction crisis.

Nathanial Gronewold is an award-winning veteran journalist who has reported from ten countries on five continents. He has earned two National Press Club Awards and three awards from the United Nations Correspondents Association, including two UNCA Gold prizes. Available to Be Poisoned

Toxicity as a Form of Life

This book explores the broader question of what it means to “live with” toxicity as a condition of life, particularly for disadvantaged communities in India. Mathur argues that the geographically uneven exposure to toxicity is a deliberate strategy of global neoliberalism to ensure that power is concentrated in the hands of the few.

In Available to Be Poisoned: Toxicity as a Form of Life, Dipali Mathur contends that the saturation of the planet with toxic chemicals marks a deliberate and violent relationship with the Earth and its “others,” born of colonialism and capitalism’s entwined histories. Mathur offers the concept of “toxicity as a form of life” to signpost the normalization of toxic exposure and analyzes how states use toxicity to control populations on the fringes of our global political economy by making them available to be poisoned.

Dipali Mathur completed her PhD at the University of Wollongong, Australia.

Ancient Rome on the Silver Screen

Myth versus Reality

No sooner had the dazzling new technology of cinema been invented near the end of the nineteenth century than filmmakers immediately turned to ancient history for inspiration. Nero, Cleopatra, Caesar, and more all found their way to the silver screen and would return again and again in the decades that followed. But just how accurate were these depictions of Ancient Rome?

In Ancient Rome on the Silver Screen: Myth versus Reality, Gregory S. Aldrete and Graham Sumner provide a fascinating examination of 50 films set in Ancient Rome, beginning with the classics from the dawn of cinema, through the great golden age of sword-and-sandals flicks in the 1950s, to the dramatic epics of the modern day. The authors analyse each film for its his-torical accuracy of plot, characters, costumes, and sets.

Featuring remarkable custom-made paintings depicting characters as they appeared in film and how they should have appeared if they were historically correct, this book delivers an invaluable perspective of film and history.

Gregory S. Aldrete is Professor Emeritus of History and Humanities at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay. Winner of numerous national fellowships and awards as both a scholar and a teacher, his books about the ancient world include The Long Shadow of Antiquity: What Have the Greeks and Romans Done For Us? and Daily Life in the Roman City

Graham Sumner has written and illustrated publications on Ancient Rome for almost forty years. His works include three publications on Roman military clothing and he has written the only standard work on Roman military dress.

Gandhi’s Global Legacy

Moral Methods and Modern Challenges

This interdisciplinary collection brings Gandhi’s ideas into conversation with issues seldom discussed in Gandhi studies. The contributors engage with cross-cultural and cross-historical time periods, contributing in important ways to the ever-expanding field of Gandhi studies.

While there has been sustained interest in Gandhi’s methods and continued academic inquiry, Gandhi’s Global Legacy: Moral Methods and Modern Challenges is unique in bringing together an interdisciplinary group of scholars who analyze Gandhi’s tactics, moral methods, and philosophical principles, not just in the fields of social and political activism, but in the areas of philosophy, religion, literature, economics, health, international relations, and interpersonal communication. Bringing this wide range of disciplinary backgrounds, the contributors provide fresh perspectives on Gandhi’s thought and practice as well as critical analyses of his work and its contemporary relevance.

Edited by Veena R. Howard, this book reveals the need for reconstructing Gandhi’s ideas and moral methods in today’s context through a broad spectrum of crucial issues, including pacifism, health, communal living, gender dynamics, the role of anger, and peacebuilding. Gandhi’s methods have been refined and reimagined to fit different situations, but there remains a need to consider his concept of Sarvodaya (uplift of all), the importance of economic, gender, and racial equity, as well as the value of dialogue and dissenting voices in building a just society. The book points to new directions for the study of Gandhi in the globalized world.

Veena R. Howard is professor of Asian religious traditions in the Department of Philosophy at California State University, Fresno.

Global Development, Ethics, and Epistemic Injustice

Rethinking Theory and Practice

This book offers a critical analysis of the theory and practice of global development. Using how Chagas disease has been understood and addressed as an example of a failing of global development, Anna Malavisi argues for a rethinking from an ethico-epistemic perspective using a strong ethical approach.

Global Development, Ethics, and Epistemic Injustice: Rethinking Theory and Practice presents a critical analysis of global development from a perspective that is both theoretical and practical, addressing both ethical and epistemic issues. Offering a unique perspective from having worked as a practitioner in global development for several years, then left the practice to ponder the deep ethical issues that shadow global development, Anna Malavisi argues that one of the problems in global development today is the absence of an ethical analysis; ethics in development today is overshadowed by economic and political interests, as well as national self-interest. The book describes how Chagas diseases, as a Neglected Tropical Disease, continues to plague vulnerable populations in poorer countries such as Bolivia due to a very limited way in how it has been conceived, understood, and addressed. Malavisi offers a strong ethical approach, comprising a feminist methodology, a social ethical praxis, political responsibility, epistemic justice, and deep-green theory. A strong ethical approach is necessary to address Chagas Disease as well as other development problems in a more effective way.

Anna Malavisi is assistant professor in the Department of Philosophy and Humanistic Studies at Western Connecticut State University.

The Meaning of Mourning

Perspectives on Death, Loss, and Grief

The Meaning of Mourning brings perspectives from leading philosophers, psychologists, theologians, writers, and artists exploring different dimensions of death, loss, and grief. They together form a wide-ranging study of some of the most difficult and formative experiences in human life.

Grief is a universal human response to death and loss. Mourning is an equally universally observable practice that enables the bereaved to express their grief and come to terms with the reality of loss. Yet, despite their prevalence, there is no unified understanding of the nature and meaning of grief and mourning. The Meaning of Mourning: Perspectives on Death, Loss, and Grief brings together fifteen essays from diverse disciplines addressing the topics of death, grief, and mourning. The collection moves from general questions concerning the putative badness of death and the meaning of loss through the phenomenology and psychology of grief, to personal and cultural aspects of mourning. Contributors examine topics such as theodicy and grief, reproductive loss, mourning as a form of recognition of value, the roots of grief in early childhood, grief in COVID-times, hope, phenomenology of loss, public commemoration and mourning rituals, mourning for a devastated culture, the Necropolis of Glasgow, and the “art of outliving.” Edited by Mikołaj Sławkowski-Rode, the volume provides a survey of the rich topography of methodologies, problems, approaches, and disciplines that are involved in the study of issues surrounding loss and our responses to it and guides the reader through a spectrum of perspectives, highlighting the connections and discontinuities between them.

Mikolaj Slawkowski-Rode is assistant professor in the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Warsaw.

Battlefield Cyber

How China and Russia are Undermining Our Democracy and National Security

Michael McLaughlin is, perhaps, America’s most knowledgeable expert on the threat of cyber warfare and America’s ability to counteract it. As the former Senior Counterintelligence Advisor for US Cyber Command, he has observed from the vantage point of the highest level of government security the structure of the nation’s cyber defenses. And what he has seen terrifies him.

The United States is being bombarded with cyberattacks. From the surge in ransomware groups targeting critical infrastructure to nation states compromising the software supply chain and corporate email servers, malicious cyber activities have reached an all-time high. Russia attracts the most attention, but China is vastly more sophisticated. Halting this digital aggression will require Americans to undertake sweeping changes in how we educate, organize and protect ourselves and to ask difficult questions about how vulnerable our largest technology giants are.

Michael McLaughlin is the Senior Counterintelligence Advisor for United States Cyber Command, where he has been responsible for the coordination of all Department of Defense counterintelligence operations in cyberspace. He was at the heart of the Pentagon’s efforts, for example, to prevent Russia from using cyberattacks to disrupt Ukraine’s economy.

Bill Holstein was based in Hong Kong and Beijing for United Press International and has been following U.S.China relations for more than 40 years. He also has specialized in covering technology since joining U.S. News & World Report in 1996. He has worked for or written for Business Week, The New York Times, Business 2.0, Fortune and other top publications.

Counseling in a Gender-Expansive World Resources to Support Therapeutic Practice

With the increased attention on transgender and genderexpansive people in the media, politics, and the public conversation comes greater visibility, and counselors are therefore now likely to clinically engage with openly transgender or gender-expansive clients during their careers. However, many counselors have not received specific training to provide affirming, informed care for these populations.

Counseiling in a Gender-Expansive World provides practical suggestions and interventions to help therapists, supervisors, and trainees increase in their competence and confidence in working with transgender and genderexpansive clients. The resources provided are informed by evidence-based practice, scholarship on intersectionality, and by social justice and advocacy movements, making this book is a useful supplement to clinical work with transgender and gender-expansive people.

Douglas Knutson (he, him) is assistant professor in the Department of Psychology at Southern Illinois University – Carbondale. He focuses on research with LGBT populations with an emphasis on transgender health.

Failure to Communicate

Why We Misunderstand What We Hear, Read, and See

Miscommunication has led to military defeats, the loss of spacecraft, and even more tragically, accidents that cost human lives. It plays a role in road rage and social media feuds. It haunts the courtroom, the boardroom, and the singles bar.

“Why didn’t they understand me? I was as clear as I could be.” Everyone has had this thought at one time or another. Research from the fields of psychology and cognitive science can provide concrete answers to these questions. In Failure to Communicate, Dr. Roger Kreuz explores the answers to these questions.

We are exposed to the dangers of miscommunication early in life. As children, we play the Telephone Game and learn an important lesson about the fragility of long communication chains. And as adults, we are constantly on the lookout for misunderstanding. People interrupt each other, on average, about every ninety seconds in order to check their understanding. Despite such vigilance, however, a great deal of what is said and written is not understood as intended.

Roger Kreuz is an Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences at the University of Memphis and a Professor in the University’s Psychology Department. He works mainly in experimental psychology, cognitive psychology, and psychology of language. He earned his Ph.D at Princeton University. He is the author of about a hundred research presentations at national and international conferences.

Darwin’s Falling Sparrow

Victorian Evolutionists and the Meaning of Suffering

The “Darwin Story” has been told in many different ways and from a wide range of perspectives. Some focus on the detailed development of evolution theory. Others examine the ways in which evolution was used to justify different ideologies. But no one has told this tale as a story of mothers, fathers, and families wrestling with alternative explanations of suffering in a time of tremendously high child mortality rates.

Darwin’s Falling Sparrow explores how both Darwin and his readers confronted evolutionary ideas as more than scientists, ministers, or public intellectuals. They were also parents, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, and friends, who, in their attempt to devise a new explanation for the ubiquitous “Fall of Every Sparrow,” were inspired to see the world through new, extraordinary lenses that altered the course of history, science, and medicine.

Kristin Johnson is a professional historian of science who specializes in the history of the naturalist tradition (evolution biology, ecology, natural history museums, etc.) and has taught a wide range of courses in the Science, Technology and Society Program at the University of Puget Sound (Tacoma, Washington) since 2006. Johnson has years of experience with the challenging task of conveying the complex and often impenetrable work of academic historians to a non-professional audience, namely, hundreds of undergraduate students. She has won two teaching awards, reflecting her ability to successfully bring academic work and conversations to a broad, nonprofessional audience.

Bitches in Bonnets

Life Lessons from Jane Austen’s Mean Girls

Have you ever recognized Mrs. Elton in an office colleague? Or caught a glimpse of Lady Catherine de Bourgh in the neighbourhood crank? Over two hundred years after their creation, Jane Austen’s mean girls are still alive and kicking.

Bitches in Bonnets explores parallels between Austen’s world and our own, showing how modern social and behavioural scientists are just beginning to document and quantify what the author knew instinctively. Interweaving modern research and sociological experiments, Austen scholar Sarah Makowski looks beyond Austen’s texts for the sources of female aggression both during the Regency and today. Despite incredible advances in gender equality, women still face discrimination and bullying from creche to career. The cruellest assaults are those that are least expected—from other women. Hardly a woman alive has not experienced a false friend whose opinions and affection bring both positive and destructive consequences. The very ordinariness of Austen’s stories leaves room for us to identify with her flawed heroines and make peace with their enemies.

This book examines how six novels of quiet English Regency life still provide insight on female relationships after all these years and how Austen’s writing—and our reading of it—offers solace to millions of fans worldwide.

Sarah Makowski completed her Ph.D. in English Literature at the University of Aachen, Germany, and is a learning and development professional supporting individuals and organizations in achieving the right skills and competencies to perform their best. Born in Michigan, Makowski now lives in Germany with her teenage son, husband, and two cats.

Indigenous Collective Rights in Latin America

The Role of Coalitions, Constitutions, and Party Systems

This book explores the processes and causal mechanisms by which recognition of collective rights for indigenous peoples varies wildly across Latin America.

Latin America is a region with high levels of recognition for Indigenous collective rights. Still, legal protections differ considerably among countries. Why do some countries in Latin America have a strong recognition of collective rights for Indigenous people while others do not? What are the factors that help enhance the presence of collective rights? The author argues that while Indigenous social movements are crucial to the protection of Indigenous rights, they are not enough. The recognition of these rights is influenced by organizational factors (such as coalitions between Indigenous peoples and non-Indigenous allies) as well as institutional conditions (including constitutional replacement and party systems). By employing qualitative comparative analysis (QCA) and case studies from Bolivia, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Mexico, and Peru, this book explores the ways various elements combine to create conditions for a variety of collective rights.

Tibet as I Knew It

The Memoir of Dr. Tsewang Yishey Pemba

This book is the memoir of Tsewang Yishey Pemba, as novelist and the first Western-trained medical doctor in Tibet, and whose memories of the Tibet of the 1930s and 1940s include festivals, travel, the author’s formative years in Tibet and India, and the daily lives of Tibetans.

Written in the 1990s after retirement from his services as a doctor and discovered by his daughter in the loft of their house in Darjeeling in India in 2017, this memoir of Dr. Tsewang Yishey Pemba provides an intricate portrayal of early twentieth-century Tibet. With his finger on the pulse of the Tibetan ethos, Pemba offers glimpses into the traditional sociology of Tibet and occasionally its snailpaced reforms, as well as the British Raj in India, while recollecting his young days in his native country. Pemba also draws information from prized sources like his father´s diaries and his conversations with Tibetan and British officials as well as people at the grassroots. His own metamorphosis, as he leaves Tibet in 1949 for higher education abroad, foreshadows the metamorphosis of Tibet and its inescapable fate in the decade that followed.

Tsewang Yishey Pemba was born on June 5, 1932 in Gyantse, Tibet. He is the author of Young Days in Tibet (1957), Idols on the Path (1966), and White Crane, Lend Me Your Wings (2017).

Built to Punish

How the Criminal Justice System Undermines American Society

The United States has the highest incarceration rate in the world. With only about 4.5% of the world’s population, it holds about 20% of the world’s inmates. But that’s only the tip of the punishment iceberg. One in five Americans have a criminal record. And every day the assembly line of punishment keeps its steady pace. Many who enter the criminal justice system are never able to fully shake it, and even those who emerge, carry its scars.

Nora Demleiter is a chaired law professor at Virginia’s Washington and Lee University, one of the nation’s top law schools. She has a national and international reputation in criminal justice reform work. Her extensive writing has focused especially on sentencing and the myriad consequences that flow from punishment.

By Steve Ramirez, foreword by Kirk Deeter, illustrated by Bob White

In Casting Seaward, author, naturalist, and educator Steve Ramirez expands beyond the geographical scope of his first two books by traveling thousands of miles by plane, motor vehicle, boat, and foot pursuing the native gamefish of North America’s salt and brackish water habitats. This journey includes following anadromous fish like salmon from the ocean’s depth to the shallowest tributaries of Alaskan rivers, and following rivers and streams from their freshwater sources to their brackish water deltas.

Muhammad Ali A Humanitarian Life

Muhammad Ali is arguably the greatest boxer of all-time. Yet, outside his record-breaking achievements in the ring, he was admired by millions of people worldwide for his compassionate heart and altruistic endeavors. Throughout his life, Ali demonstrated an unwavering commitment to advancing justice and freedom that should never be forgotten.

In Muhammad Ali: A Humanitarian Life, Margueritte Shelton shows how the “People’s Champion” transformed his success in the boxing ring into a powerful platform to further his fight against inequality, injustice, and oppressive politics. Ali ascended to greatness during a violent decade of protests and revolutionary movements, and Shelton vividly portrays the personal journey of this bold young dreamer as he pursued athletic glory to become a champion in the ring and a champion for human rights.

Margueritte Shelton is a new voice in the non-fiction genre. As an avid volunteer invested in humanitarian work, she was named an honorary member of the National Museum of the American Indian for her contributions. She participated in the international hunger relief organization “Rise Against Hunger,” the Longest Walk in Washington, DC, and more. She is a member of the Muhammad Ali Center and supports their humanitarian awards events in Louisville, Kentucky.

Raising Young Athletes

Parenting Your Children to Victory in Sports and Life

Sports are an amazing environment in which to raise children. The benefits they gain from athletic participation are many, including physical, personal, and social. Yet, there is also a dark side to today’s youth sports culture, as an emphasis on winning has made what was once fun become a burden for many young athletes. As a result, parents can’t always be certain their children’s athletic involvement will be safe and enjoyable.

In Raising Young Athletes: Parenting Your Children to Victory in Sports and Life, Dr. Jim Taylor—an internationally recognized authority on sport psychology, child development, and parenting—offers a guiding hand to help parents ensure their children’s sports participation encourages positive attitudes and promotes healthy developments as they move toward adulthood. The role of parents in shaping their children’s sports experience has never been more important, and Dr. Taylor shows parents how to send the right messages to their young athletes with clear and practical advice.

Jim Taylor, PhD, is internationally recognized for his work in the psychology of sport and parenting. He has worked with junior elite, collegiate, Olympic, and professional athletes for more than thirty years. The Australian Gamble Organized Crime Down Under

The Australian Gamble explores Rooklyn’s role as a thread that connects some of the best-recognized characters, and most pivotal events, in Australian criminal history. It is a story that begins overseas, with the origins of the Bally poker machine company — a scandal-prone business with a name that was fated to be forever linked with Rooklyn’s.

From humble origins in Al Capone’s Chicago, Bally rode the amusement game wave to become one of the biggest players in the gaming industry worldwide … a status that made it an attractive target for takeover by America’s Italian Mafia. Run out of Cuba on the heels of Castro’s communist revolution, ‘The Families’ were looking for new opportunities to expand their gaming ambitions, both in the desert mecca Las Vegas and (more quietly) through clandestinely sinking their hooks into a financially-struggling Bally. Meanwhile, far away in Australia, Bally distributor Jack Rooklyn looked to continue his rise in the often-fatal world of 1960s Sydney Noir.

Paul Bleakley is an Assistant Professor in Criminal Justice at the University of New Haven, with expertise in the histories of crime and policing in Australia. A native Queenslander, Paul completed his doctoral studies at the University of New England where he traced the impact of police corruption in his home state from the 1950s to 1990s. For his doctoral studies, Paul was awarded a research scholarship by the Australian federal government in recognition of the contribution his work made to Australian policing history.

In Search of the Blonde Tigress

The Untold Story of Eleanor Jarman

Beginning in 1933, Eleanor Jarman was sensationalized by the press as the “blonde tigress” and “the most dangerous woman alive.” But a closer look at her life shows that she was an otherwise-ordinary woman who got caught up in a Chicago crime spree, then was convicted as an accomplice to murder and sent to prison. In 1940, Eleanor escaped and managed to live out her life as America’s longest-running female fugitive.

In Search of the Blonde Tigress: The Untold Story of Eleanor Jarman sets the mystery and intrigue of this wanted woman into historic context. It also includes her family’s plea, in 1993, for Eleanor to come forward and apply for clemency. Most revealing at the time was Eleanor’s alias. With that information (and given the fact that Eleanor, born in 1901, is obviously deceased), the author documents her search for Eleanor’s remains—right up to a visit to her likely grave.

Silvia Pettem is a Colorado-based historical researcher, writer, and author. After local history research led her to the identification of a decades-old murder victim, Pettem switched from writing about history to the genre of true crime. Pettem’s other books that relate to cold case investigations include Someone’s Daughter: In Search of Justice for Jane Doe (2009); Cold Case Research: Resources for Unidentified, Missing, and Cold Homicide Cases (2013); The Long Term Missing: Hope and Help for Families (2017); and Cold Case Chronicles: Mysteries, Murders, and the Missing (2021). Jukebox Empire

The Mob and the Dark Side of the American Dream

Jukebox Empire follows the many twists and turns in one man’s pursuit of the American dream, from a self-taught electronics genius to money launderer for the mob. This book exposes how the jukebox industry became the vertically integrated business model for organized crime at a time when there was a jukebox in every restaurant, diner, bar, barracks, arcade, and canteen throughout the country. Anyone can afford a nickel for a song and every week the jukeboxes generate millions of dollars in cash, untaxed income, that needed to be laundered. Beneath this wholesome veneer lies a seamy underworld of juke joints, operators’ routes, smoke-filled showrooms, and violence.

David Rabinovitch reveals the details of the mob’s international money-laundering scheme to finance running guns to Cuba. The investigation pieces together an epic puzzle that begins in Chicago with the invention of a jukebox and spans the casinos of Havana and the financial giants of Europe, leading to what the FBI called ‘the biggest bank robbery in the world.’

David Rabinovitch is a winner of the EMMY, Peabody, and Gemini awards. Significant films include the documentary Politics of Poison, which was screened for a Congressional committee and resulted in the suspension of the domestic use of the chemicals Agent Orange, and the mini-series Secret Files of the Inquisition, which dramatized a thousand years of intolerance by the Catholic Church, based on newly accessed archival files. David hails from the town of Morden, Manitoba.

Stan Lee

The Man Behind Marvel

In Stan Lee: The Man behind Marvel, Bob Batchelor offers an eye-opening look at this iconic visionary, a man who created (with talented artists) many of history’s most legendary characters. In this energetic and entertaining biography, Batchelor explores how Lee capitalized on natural talent and hard work to become the editor of Marvel Comics as a teenager. After toiling in the industry for decades, Lee threw caution to the wind and went for broke, co-creating the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, Hulk, Iron Man, the X-Men, the Avengers, and others in a creative flurry that revolutionized comic books for generations of readers. Marvel superheroes became a central part of pop culture, from collecting comics to innovative merchandising, from superhero action figures to the ever-present Spider-Man lunchbox.

Batchelor examines many of Lee’s most beloved works, including the 1960s comics that transformed Marvel from a second-rate company to a legendary publisher. This book reveals the risks Lee took to bring the characters to life and Lee’s tireless efforts to make comic books and superheroes part of mainstream culture for more than fifty years.

Bob Batchelor is an award-winning cultural historian and biographer and author of more than a dozen books. His work has been featured in Time, the New York Times, Cincinnati Enquirer, LitHub, Washington Post and Los Angeles Times

The Millionaire Next Door

The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy, Twentieth Anniversary Edition

Rights sold:

“Why aren’t I as wealthy as I should be?” Many people ask this question of themselves all the time. Often they are hard-working, well educated middle- to high-income people. Why, then, are so few affluent. For nearly two decades the answer has been found in the bestselling The Millionaire Next Door: The Surprising Secrets of America’s Wealthy, reissued with a new foreword for the twenty-first century. According to the authors, most people have it all wrong about how you become wealthy in America. Wealth in America is more often the result of hard work, diligent savings, and living below your means than it is about inheritance, advance degrees, and even intelligence.

The Millionaire Next Door identifies seven common traits that show up again and again among those who have accumulated wealth. You will learn, for example, that millionaires bargain shop for used cars, pay a tiny fraction of their wealth in income tax, raise children who are often unaware of their family’s wealth until they are adults, and, above all, reject the big-spending lifestyles most of us associate with rich people. In fact, you will learn that the flashy millionaires glamorized in the media represent only a tiny minority of America’s rich. Most of the truly wealthy in this country don’t live in Beverly Hills or on Park Avenue they live next door.

Thomas J. Stanley was an author, lecturer, and researcher who started studying the affluent in 1973. He died in 2015.

The Next Millionaire Next Door

Enduring Strategies for Building Wealth

Rights sold:

Is the millionaire next door still out there today? The latest research from Dr. Thomas J. Stanley and his daughter, Dr. Sarah Stanley Fallaw, confirms that, yes, the millionaire next door is alive and well. And he’s achieving his financial objectives much the same way he always has: by living below his means, being a contrarian in a maelstrom of hyper-consumption, and being disciplined in reaching his financial goals.

The book examines wealth in America 20 years after Dr. Stanley’s groundbreaking work on self-made affluence. While a new generation of household financial managers are being inundated with the proliferation financial advice, The Next Millionaire Next Door provides readers with an analysis of what it takes to achieve wealth with data-based conclusions and evidence from those who have built wealth on their own over the last two decades. In this current work, the authors detail how specific decisions, behaviors, and characteristics align with the discipline of wealth building, covering areas such as consumption, budgeting, careers, investing, and financial management in general. Through case studies, survey research, and a careful examination of quantitative studies of wealth, the authors illustrate what it takes to achieve financial success today, regardless of market conditions or rising costs.

Thomas J. Stanley was an author, lecturer, and researcher who started studying the affluent in 1973. He died in 2015.

The Origins of the Modern World

A Global and Environmental Narrative from the Fifteenth to the Twenty-First Century, Fourth Edition

Rights sold:

This clearly written and engrossing book presents a global narrative of the origins of the modern world from 1400 to the present. Unlike most studies, which assume that the “rise of the West” is the story of the coming of the modern world, this history, drawing upon new scholarship on Asia, Africa, and the New World and upon the maturing field of environmental history, constructs a story in which those parts of the world play major roles, including their impacts on the environment. Robert B. Marks defines the modern world as one marked by industry, the nation state, interstate warfare, a large and growing gap between the wealthiest and poorest parts of the world, increasing inequality within the wealthiest industrialized countries, and an escape from the environmental constraints of the “biological old regime.”

Robert B. Marks is professor emeritus of history and environmental studies at Whittier College.

Nihilism and Technology

This investigation is carried out by using Nietzsche’s philosophy of nihilism in order to explore the ways in which our values mediate how we design technologies and how we use technologies. Examining our technological practices reveals how our nihilism and our technologies have become intertwined, creating a world of techno-hypnosis, data-driven activity, pleasure economics, herd networking, and orgies of clicking.

Dear Professor Einstein

Albert Einstein’s Letters to and from Children

This enchanting book displays a small sampling of the amusing, touching, and sometimes precocious letters sent to Albert Einstein by children from around the world, and his often witty and very considerate responses. Alice Calaprice has compiled a delightful and charming collection of more than 60 letters, most never published before, from children to perhaps the greatest scientist of all time. Enhancing this correspondence are numerous photographs showing Einstein amid children, wearing an Indian headdress, carrying a puppet of himself, donning furry slippers, among many other wonderful pictures. They reveal the intimate human side of the great public persona, a man who, though he spent his days contemplating the impersonal abstractions of mathematics and physics, was very fond of children and enjoyed being in their company.

Einstein’s Brainchild Relativity Made Relatively Easy!

Physicist and popular science writer Barry Parker speaks to the broadest possible audience in bringing Einstein’s theories to life. While tracing the story of Einstein’s life, Parker seizes on the crucial groundbreaking theories that Einstein envisioned. Not since Isaac Newton had anyone conceived the universe in such a revolutionary, startling new way. Through Parker’s eloquence, eye for detail, and clever use of Einsteinian cartoons and vivid illustrations, he enables the reader to see and appreciate for perhaps the first time the full meaning and scope of Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity and General Theory of Relativity.

Leonardo’s Brain

Understanding Da Vinci’s Creative Genius

Rights sold:

Best-selling author Leonard Shlain explores the life, art, and mind of Leonardo da Vinci, seeking to explain his singularity by looking at his achievements in art, science, psychology, and military strategy and then employing state of the art left-right brain scientific research to explain his universal genius. Shlain shows that no other person in human history has excelled in so many different areas as da Vinci and he peels back the layers to explore the how and the why.

Shlain asserts that Leonardo’s genius came from a unique creative ability that allowed him to understand and excel in a wide range of fields. From here Shlain jumps off and discusses the history of and current research on human creativity that involves different modes of thinking and neuroscience. The author also boldly speculates on whether or not the qualities of Leonardo’s brain and his creativity presage the future evolution of the human species.

Leonard Shlain was a best-selling author and San Francisco surgeon. Admired among artists, scientists, philosophers, anthropologists and educators, Shlain authored three best-selling books: Art & Physics, Alphabet vs. The Goddess and Sex, and Time and Power

Origins of Form

The Shape of Natural and Man-made Things— Why They Came to Be the Way They Are and How They Change

Origins of Form is about the shape of things. What limits the height of a tree? Why is a large ship or office building more efficient than a small one? What is the similarity between a human rib cage and an airplane or a bison and a cantilevered bridge? How might we plan for things to improve as they are used instead of wearing out? The author has chosen eight criteria that constitute the major influences on three-dimensional form. These criteria comprise the eight chapters of the book: each looks at form from entirely different viewpoints. The products of both nature and man are examined and compared.

Christopher Williams has lectured on and written many articles about the theory of design, and he has taught design and architecture at the University of California, Los Angeles; the Cleveland Art Institute; the University of Alberta in Canada; and in the Department of Design and Environmental Analysis at Cornell University.

Math Makers

The Lives and Works of 50 Famous Mathematicians

Rights sold:

Mathematics today is the fruit of centuries of brilliant insights by men and women whose personalities and life experiences were often as extraordinary as their mathematical achievements. This entertaining history of mathematics chronicles those achievements through fifty short biographies that bring these great thinkers to life while making their contributions understandable to readers with little math background. Among the fascinating characters profiled are Isaac Newton (1642–1727), the founder of classical physics and infinitesimal calculus—he frequently quarreled with fellow scientists and was obsessed by alchemy and arcane Bible interpretation; Sophie Germain (1776–1831), who studied secretly at the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, using the name of a previously enrolled male student—she is remembered for her work on Fermat’s Last Theorem and on elasticity theory; Emmy Noether (1882–1935), whom Albert Einstein described as the most important woman in the history of mathematics—she made important contributions to abstract algebra and in physics she clarified the connection between conservation laws and symmetry.

Alfred S. Posamentier has published over sixty books in the area of mathematics and mathematics education.

Christian Spreitzer is a co-author of The Mathematics of Everyday Life and The Joy of Mathematics.

The Joy of Chemistry

The Amazing Science of Familiar Things

This book challenges the perception of chemistry as too difficult to bother with and too clinical to be any fun. Cathy Cobb and Monty L. Fetterolf, both professional chemists and experienced educators, introduce readers to the magic, elegance, and, yes, joy of chemistry. From the fascination of fall foliage and fireworks, to the functioning of smoke detectors and computers, to the fundamentals of digestion (as when good pizza goes bad!), the authors illustrate the concepts of chemistry in terms of everyday experience, using familiar materials.

What Makes Your Brain Happy and Why You Should Do the Opposite Updated and Revised

This book reveals a remarkable paradox: what your brain wants is frequently not what your brain needs. In fact, much of what makes our brains “happy” leads to errors, biases, and distortions, which cloud our judgment and muddle our decision making. Science writer David DiSalvo presents evidence from evolutionary and social psychology, cognitive science, neurology, and even marketing and economics. And he interviews many of the top thinkers in psychology and neuroscience today. From this research-based platform, DiSalvo draws out insights that we can use to identify our brains’ foibles and turn our awareness into edifying action.

David DiSalvo is a science writer and public education specialist who writes about the intersection of science, technology and culture.

Stop Caretaking the Borderline or Narcissist

How to End the Drama and Get On with Life

Rights sold:

Here, Margalis Fjelstad describes how people get into a Caretaker role with a Borderline or Narcissist, and how they can get out. Caretakers give up their sense of self to become who and what the Borderline or Narcissist needs them to be. This compromises the Caretaker’s self-esteem, distorts their thinking processes, and locks them into a Victim-Persecutor-Rescuer pattern with the Borderline or Narcissist. The book looks at the underlying rules and expectations in these relationships and shows Caretaker’s how to move themselves out of these rigid interactions and into a healthier, more productive, and positive lifestyle—with or without the Borderline/Narcissistic partner or family member. It describes how to get out of destructive interactions with the Borderline or Narcissist and how to take new, more effective actions to focus on personal wants, needs, and life goals while allowing the Borderline or Narcissist to take care of themselves. It presents a realistic, yet compassionate, attitude toward the self-destructive nature of these relationships, and gives real life examples of how individuals have let go of their Caretaker behaviors with creative and effective solutions.

Margalis Fjelstad, PhD, LMFT, has a private psychotherapy practice in Ft. Collins, CO, specializing in work with clients who are in relationship to someone who has borderline or narcissistic personality disorder, and she facilitates groups on Caretaker recovery.

Everyday Bias

Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Judgments in Our Daily Lives, Updated Edition

To be human is to be biased. From this simple truth, nationally recognized diversity expert Howard J. Ross explores the biases we each carry within us. Incorporating anecdotes from today’s headlines alongside case studies from over 30 years of diversity consulting, Ross helps readers understand how unconscious bias impacts our day-to-day lives and, particularly, our daily work lives. And, he answers the question: “Is there anything we can do about it?” by providing examples of behaviors that the reader can engage in to disengage the impact of their own biases. Originally published in 2014, the updated edition draws new examples from today’s headlines such as the #me too Movement, police shootings, and bias in the ever more partisan Trump era.

Howard J. Ross, a lifelong social justice advocate and founding partner of the nationally recognized diversity consulting firm Cook Ross, Inc., is the author of Reinventing Diversity: Transforming Organizational Community to Strengthen People, Purpose, and Performance (2011), Everyday Bias: Identifying and Navigating Unconscious Bias in our Everyday Lives and Our Search for Belonging: How Our Need to Connect is Tearing Us Apart (Barrett Koehler, 2018).
