When it comes to knowing what to drink (and how and why) Natalie Bovis is your personal guide through Cocktail Land. The daughter of European immigrants (French and English) and spending summers with family in France, alcoholic drinks were healthily integrated into Natalie’s world-view, growing up. A little sip of champagne on holidays or a panaché (half beer, half lemonade) is a normal part of life for a young adult, in Europe. The integration of spirits and wine into everyday life occasions (often whipped up behind a full-sized bar in the family home) seemed as natural to her as, well, Apple Pie Martinis. Natalie has also had a lifelong affair with the written word, and wrote her first poem at seven years old. As creator and editor of TheLiquidMuse.com, (website, blog, cocktail consultation, classes and an online show) Natalie brings two passions together by writing about cocktails and spirits from around the world.

Sergey Maidukov is a Ukrainian writer who has sold tens of thousands of copies of his published books in the countries of the former USSR, such as Ukraine, Russia, Belarus, and the Baltics. This is a gripping story that begins in February 2022, when the author and his family shared the fate of millions of Ukrainian refugees driven out of their cities and villages by the Russian invasion. Over a year later, the intense panic of the first weeks and months has subsided, and the author is able to convey the story through a clearer lens. This is not a hate-filled recounting of their experiences—despite ongoing attacks. Instead, it focuses on the moments of love, friendship, unity, courage, and faith that Ukrainians experienced since the onset of the war. While war can be experienced as an out-ofcontrol fire, it can also bring forward the healing warmth of kinship.

A gripping account of one family’s war experience.

I Hate Old Music, Too How Familiarity & Overkill Killed Our Favorite Music

When Dave Thompson’s I Hate New Music: The Classic Rock Manifesto published in 2008, the book did not so much divide the world of rock reading as leave it in an uproar. It started arguments, it ended debates, and for the author of over 150 music books, it not only received the strongest reader response of any book he’d written, it also still crops up in author interviews today. lmost fifteen years later, however, much has changed, and the classics have lost some of their bite as well. In I Hate Old Music, Too, Thompson recasts the story of “classic rock” in the 21st century. Among the targets of his ire are lavish box sets that mostly just duplicate the albums you already own; comebacks and reunions featuring half or even fewer of the band members; the dark side of the “vinyl revival”; the continued cult of The Beatles; and much more. Dave Thompson is the author of over 150 books, including co-written memoirs with New York Doll Sylvain Sylvain, Motown legends Brian and Eddie Holland, Hawkwind’s Nik Turner, the Yardbirds’ Jim McCarty, Fairport Convention’s Judy Dyble, and more. He is a columnist for Goldmine magazine, and his work has also appeared in Rolling Stone, Spin, Alternative Press, Mojo, Record Collector, and many other major publications. He has contributed to music documentaries produced by VH-1, A&E, the BBC, and others. Born in the UK, Thompson is now a resident of Delaware.

Her unforgettable image is seared into the minds of fans everywhere, and her private life continues to inspire headlines and controversy, but Marilyn Monroe is one of the most famous—and misunderstood—women in the world who remains a mystery to most people. On Marilyn cuts through the rumors and myths to present the real person behind the queen of movies and pop culture. James Bond and the Sixties Spy Craze By Thomas Shubilla Of all the novel cultural confections to appear during the 1960s, one of the more peculiar was the nearly insatiable hunger of audiences for spy stories. Bubbling with sex and violence, and marrying pop-culture cool with a funhouse-mirror vision of Cold War geopolitics, the obsession with spy stories found its most popular and lucrative outlet in the James Bond franchise. But beyond 007, there were a host of competing movies and television programs that ranged from inspired to hopelessly derivative—among them the Flint and Harry Palmer movies, The Man from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, The Avengers, and countless others. James Bond and the Sixties Spy Craze delves into the cultural trends that produced such a flowering of interest in spy stories, from the Cold War and JFK’s enthusiasm for Ian Fleming’s novels to the unexpected success of the five original Bond movies by Eon Productions, all of them starring Sean Connery. Covered here are the cinematic spin-offs and television take-offs on the genre, as well as the explosion of merchandising in the form of toys, comic books, and model kits. The book also features interviews with some of the key players of the sixties spy trend who are still with us, such as Lana Wood, Caroline Munro, Martine Beswick, Madeline Smith, George Lazenby, and others. Packed with behind-the-scenes anecdotes and illuminating insights, this is a loving tribute to a venerable pop-culture genre. Thom Shubilla is the author of Primetime 1966-1967: The Full Spectrum of Television’s First All-Color Season. He has written numerous articles and conducted reviews for Screem and writes about classic horror films for Monster Bash Magazine.

A loving tribute that delves into the cultural trends that produced a flowering of interest in spy stories.

Exploring Hate An Anthology Edited by Joshua A. Geltzer, Dipayan Ghosh and Robert L. McKenzie The threat of real-world violence from hateful extremism is growing and there is an increasing public outcry for governments, tech companies, and others to address the deadly effects of hate-inspired violence. As extremists and hate groups become savvier at mobilizing through social media, calls for stronger, swifter responses are growing more intense. Yet these responses must be based on research and data, rather than fear and intuition. In order to formulate the right responses, there are still many unanswered questions that must be addressed. What are the actual constellations and contours of hate groups in the United States? What are the dynamics of connection between online activities and real-world violence? And what can been done to provide more support to impacted individuals and communities? In an attempt to answer these and other vexing questions, the authors have curated a diverse set of essays from scholars, public intellectuals, community leaders, policymakers, religious clerics, tech industry officials, and victims themselves. Taken together, these essays not only explore the different manifestations and consequences of hate today but also offer concrete and actionable solutions. Joshua Geltzer is the founding Executive Director of the Institute for Constitutional Advocacy and Protection and a Visiting Professor of Law at Georgetown University Law Center as well as an ASU Future of War Fellow at New America. Dipayan Ghosh is Pozen Fellow and codirector of the Platform Accountability Project at the Shorenstein Center on Media, Politics, and Public Policy at the Harvard Kennedy School. Robert McKenzie is a Director and Senior Fellow at New America and adjunct professor at Columbia University.

Mastery How Learning Transforms Our Brains, Minds, and Bodies By Arturo E. Hernandez To the outsider, an expert seems as if they are doing everything effortlessly. A master chess player, an expert golfer, and a prolific writer seem to be able to quickly home in on what needs to be done and execute flawlessly over and over again. How do we master new skills? How do our brains and bodies transform performance from novice to expert? In Mastery, Arturo E. Hernandez shows that new skills are not built but rather bloom from the combination and recombination of small parts that come to represent a new whole. The process by which smaller things are blended over and over again is one that is not just restricted to high-level experts. Uniting the latest research findings from a cross section of disciplines with compelling storytelling, Mastery shows readers how the blooming of abilities can work in their favor and lead them to achieve much more than they thought was possible. Whether mastering a new language, learning to play a musical instrument, or sharpening your memory, Hernandez teaches readers how to take advantage of our adaptability and open our minds to their fullest potential. Arturo E. Hernandez, Ph.D. is a professor of psychology at the University of Houston specializing in the brain bases of bilingualism. He is the winner of the Wilhelm Bessel Research Award from the Humboldt Foundation in Germany and a Fulbright Global Scholar award, among other awards. He is the author of The Bilingual Brain and has written more than 80 journal articles. As a child, Hernandez was exposed to four languages and became proficient in two of them, English and Spanish. Feedback Uncovering the Hidden Connections Between Life and the Universe By Nicholas R. Golledge We live in a world where things come and go, rise and fall, grow and decay, tracing out cycles of change that are ordered and predictable. Earth and the life upon it have evolved over billions of years to be right where we are now only because of feedbacks that pushed those systems until they broke. And then those systems adapted, reorganized, and rebuilt. With each new cycle of growth it was feedbacks that created order from disorder and gave rise to a world perfectly optimized for everything it needed to be. Now the latest scientific research is revealing that the exact same patterns that describe plate tectonics, evolution, and mass extinctions also emerge in the heartbeat of our everyday lives, underpinning everything from the cohesion of our social networks and personal relationships to our emotional well-being and spiritual beliefs. In Feedback, we embark on a backstage journey revealing how these lesser-known processes keep us operating right where we need to be, poised at the edge of chaos. In a world simultaneously threatened with social and environmental disasters this journey uncovers the hidden connections that unite us not just to those around us but also across vast scales of time and space to the very fabric of the universe. Nicholas Golledge is an internationally INTER recognized climate scientist based in NATIONAL AUTHOR Wellington, New Zealand. He uses a combination of field, laboratory, and computer-based techniques to answer fundamental questions about how the Earth works. He is frequently interviewed for television, radio, and print media and his work has been covered by publications such as the New York Times, the Washington Post, and National Geographic.

The Thefts of the Mona Lisa The Complete Story of the World’s Most Famous Artwork By Noah Charney If you read one book on the Mona Lisa, let this be it. From the artwork to its theft and role in popular culture, The Thefts of the Mona Lisa provides the complete story. Leonardo da Vinci’s portrait, the Mona Lisa, is without doubt the world’s most famous painting. It achieved its fame not only because it is a remarkable example of Renaissance portraiture, but because of its criminal history. The Mona Lisa (also called La Gioconda or La Joconde) was stolen on 21 August 1911 by an Italian, Vincenzo Peruggia. His successful theft of the painting from the Louvre, the farcical manhunt that followed, and Peruggia’s subsequent trial in Florence were highly publicized catapulting an already admired painting into stratospheric heights of fame. This book examines the criminal biography of Leonardo’s Mona Lisa, with a focus on separating fact from fiction, and in the process also tells of Leonardo’s creation of the Mona Lisa, discusses why it is so famous, and investigates two other events in its history. First, the so-called “affaire des statuettes,” in which Pablo Picasso and Guillaume Apollinaire were arrested under suspicion of involvement in the theft of the Mona Lisa. Second, the question as to whether the Nazis stole the Mona Lisa during the Second World War. This book tells the whole story of the world’s most famous painting. INTER NATIONAL AUTHOR

Noah Charney is an internationally bestselling author of more than a dozen books and a professor of art history specializing in art crime. His novel, The Art Thief, was a bestseller in five countries and is translated into 17 languages. His book Collector of Lives: Giorgio Vasari and the Invention of Art was nominated for the Pulitzer Prize. Charney is now a professor at University of Ljubljana in Slovenia.

In Muppets in Moscow, Natasha Lance Rogoff brings this gripping tale to life. Amidst bombings, assassinations, and a military takeover of the production office, Lance Rogoff and the talented Moscow team of artists, writers, musicians, filmmakers, and puppeteers remained determined to bring laughter, learning, and a new way of seeing the world to children in Russia, Ukraine and across the former Soviet empire. With sharp wit and compassion, Lance Rogoff observes how cultural clashes colored every aspect of the production—from the show’s educational framework to writing comedy to the new Russian Muppets—despite the team’s common goal.

The Lust for Blood Why We Are Fascinated by Death, Murder, Horror, and Violence By Jeffrey A. Kottler How do we explain the lurid fascination that most people experience when confronted by real or simulated acts of violence, murder, horror, and crime? This is the subject examined in this candid assessment of our dark vicarious thrills. Based on a series of interviews with perpetrators, victims, and “consumers” of violence, including several celebrities, the author of a best-selling book on serial killers explores what there is about this subject that draws such a wide audience. Unlike many other books that attempt to probe the murky psyches of deviant individuals, this book focuses on normal, average people who, despite themselves, enjoy getting close to the most forbidden, perverse side of destruction and evil. The persons interviewed range from homicide detectives and emergency room personnel to a heavyweight boxer and groupies of serial killers on death row. The author considers ideas from a variety of theories and research to explain our responses to violence, raises questions about the shifting line be tween normal and abnormal, evaluates the confusion and ambivalence that many people feel when witnessing others’ suffering, and suggests future trends in society’s attitudes toward violence. Jeffrey A. Kottler, PhD, is the author of over eighty nonfiction books including the New York Times bestseller The Last Victim: A True-Life Journey Inside the Mind of the Serial Killer. He is one of the foremost psychologists in the world writing about issues related to human behavior. He has written dozens of classic texts and manuals for psychotherapists and teachers. Jeffrey is Professor of Counseling at California State University, Fullerton.

From Gutenberg to Google The History of Our Future By Tom Wheeler In this fascinating book, former FCC chairman Tom Wheeler brings to life the two great network revolutions of the past and uses them to help put in perspective the confusion, uncertainty, and even excitement most people face today. The first big network revolution was the invention of movable-type printing in the fifteenth century. The second revolution came with the invention of the telegraph early in the nineteenth century. Never before had people been able to communicate over long distances faster than a horse could travel. Along with the development of the world’s first high-speed network—the railroad—the telegraph upended centuries of stability and literally redrew the map of the world. Wheeler puts these past revolutions into the perspective of today, when rapid-fire changes in networking are upending the nature of work, personal privacy, education, the media, and nearly every other aspect of modern life. Outlining “What’s Next,” he describes how artificial intelligence, virtual reality, blockchain, and the need for cybersecurity are laying the foundation for a third network revolution. Before he became chairman of the Federal Communications Commission in 2013, Tom Wheeler started or helped found several companies offering new cable, wireless, and video communications services.

How Network revolutions of the past have shaped the present and set the stage for the revolution we are experiencing today. The Making of Paris The Story of How Paris Evolved From a Fishing Village Into the World’s Most Beautiful City By Russell Kelley Paris has long been the world’s most popular destination and, in the view of many, the world’s most beautiful city – the product of two thousand years of continuous improvement and refinement. The Making of Paris is the story of how Paris evolved from a small fishing village on an island in the middle of the Seine River into the City of Light. The focus of the book is on the city as seen from the street, in order to understand the evolution of the urban landscape of Paris through the rues and boulevards and the buildings and monuments from its long and storied past. Russell Kelley is an American lawyer who has lived in Paris for nearly 30 years. A dedicated flâneur, he has walked the length and breadth of his adopted city, marveling at its splendid monuments, perspectives and panoramas. Those walks led to an unending quest to understand how the urban landscape of Paris, the world’s most beautiful city, evolved over the centuries. When in the US, he lives in Palm Beach, Florida. Rags to Rugs 30 New Weaving Designs for Repurposed Fabrics By Tom Knisely Tom Knisely is back with 30 brand-new designs for his favorite type of weaving project: rag rugs! Weaving with strips of cloth creates a sturdy, hardwearing piece that can be enjoyed on your floor every day for years to come. When made with repurposed cloth from items you otherwise have no use for, these rugs are also an excellent way to keep fabrics from ending up in a landfill (or even just taking up space in a closet). In Rags to Rugs, Tom explores the weaving possibilities of a variety of fabrics, from T-shirts and jeans to quilts, linens, towels, and more. He shows you the techniques he uses to get the most from each piece, and gives advice on how best to set up your loom for weaving with rags much thicker than your typical weaving thread. Tom Knisely teaches at the Red Stone Glen Fiber Arts Center in York Haven, Pennsylvania. He has taught weaving for more than 30 years—everything from beginners’ classes to complex multi-harness weaving— and was named Teacher of the Year by Handwoven magazine. He is the author of the popular Weaving Rag Rugs, Huck Lace Weaving with Color and Weave Effects, Handwoven Table Linens, and Handwoven Baby Blankets.

The Rooster Discovering my Father’s Memories from the Jasenovac Concentration Camp By Sibel Roller-Walach This is the story of a father, as seen through the prism of a daughter’s memories of him. The personal story is offset against a greater political context and the destructive impact of nationalism on individuals and their families. It is a tale of survival, resilience and humanity. The book covers the time that the father, Dragan, spent in a concentration camp in the former Yugoslavia. The camp and the atrocities perpetrated there are still highly contentious issues in contemporary Croatia, Serbia and especially in Bosnia and Hercegovina. The absence of reconciliation over the events in the camp was one of the contributing factors in the disintegration of Yugoslavia in the 1990s, the subsequent Balkan wars and the continued instability of the region today. The memoir contains the manuscript left by Dragan, in conversation with his daughter Sibel, the author. It is indeed, a deeply personal learning experience about a part of her father that she never knew. Sibel Roller is a writer of twentieth century non-fiction and fiction, focused on hitherto unheard voices and unusual perspectives. She grew up in eight countries across four continents but now resides in London. Her early career was in science research and teaching. She is Professor Emerita at London South Bank University.

A painful journey into the realities of the terrifying secrets a father kept from his family during his lifetime.

Scribners

Becoming Kerouac

Five Generations in Publishing

A Writer in His Time

By Charles Scribner III

By Paul Maher Jr.

The inside story of the legendary publishing house that gave rise to many of the greatest authors of the last 150 years.

A fresh new perspective on the literary genius of Jack Kerouac.

The story of Scribners spans 150 years, beginning with its founding in an unused chapel in downtown New York, through its golden era on Fifth Avenue above the famous landmark bookstore, down to the present-day. Charles Scribner III invites us “between the covers” of illustrious and notorious books, and provides insight into the family members, editors, and authors of this colorful literary history.

Jack Kerouac was one of America’s greatest writers, yet he endured a life characterized by hardship and disillusion. Leading Kerouac scholar Paul Maher Jr. targets the writer’s embattled insight of self as central to his life and work. He reveals how Kerouac’s troubled interactions with alcohol, drugs, and spirituality shaped his autobiographical prose and poetry and created a singular language that united thoughts on the human condition.

Charles Scribner III joined his father at the family publishing house Charles Scribner’s Sons, where he remained through three changes in ownership, overseeing the publication of its literary classics.

Paul Maher Jr. is a freelance writer and editor. He is author/editor of several books including: Kerouac: His Life and Work; Tom Waits On Tom Waits: Interviews & Encounters with Tom Waits; Miles On Miles: Interviews & Encounters with Miles Davis. He lives in Lubec, Maine with his wife, Caitlin.

Wiring the Winning Organization Liberating Our Collective Greatness through Slowification, Simplification, and Amplification By Gene Kim and Steven J. Spear

Deming’s Journey to Profound Knowledge How Deming Helped Win a War, Altered the Face of Industry, and Holds the Key to Our Future

A new business dynamic for the digital age.

By John Willis, with Derek Lewis

Drawing on decades of meticulous research of high-performing organizations and cross-population surveys of tens of thousands of employees, awardwinning authors Gene Kim and Dr. Steven J. Spear introduce a groundbreaking new theory of organizational management. Organizations win by using three mechanisms to slowify, simplify, and amplify, which systematically moves problemsolving from high-risk danger zones to low-risk winning zones.

This is not a biography. This is a story of discovery. Part business history, part biography, part journey into deep business sense, author John Willis captures the full picture of W. Edwards Deming’s life and influence. Most importantly, it reveals the experiences that led to Deming’s greatest discovery: the System of Profound Knowledge, a collection of fundamental truths that show how any system or process can be transformed into something greater.

Gene Kim is a multi–award-winning CTO, researcher, and author. He is the author of six books, which have sold over one million copies. He lives with his wife and children in Portland, Oregon. Steven J. Spear is principal for HVE LLC, the award-winning author of THe High-Velocity Edge, and patent holder for the See to Solve Real Time Alert System.

John Willis has worked in the IT management industry for more than 35 years. He is reseaching DevOps, DevSecOps, IT risk, modern governance, and audit compliance. Willis has authored six IBM Redbooks on enterprise systems management.

Portsmouth Point The British Navy in Fiction, 1793–1815 By C. Northcote Parkinson Portsmouth Point—or “Spice Island,” as it was informally called—has always been associated with British naval history. In this classic work, the Point serves as the backdrop for British naval historian and author C. Northcote Parkinson’s chronicle of life in His Majesty’s Royal Navy during the French Revolutionary Wars (1792–1802) and the Napoleonic Wars (1803–1815). The captivating stories, while semi-fictitious, use excerpts from the writings of men who personally served in the British Navy during these periods, and each entry covers a distinct aspect of everyday life aboard England’s “wooden walls,” from the daily lives of Jack Tars and ships’ officers, to the complexities of rigging, to the barbarity of naval warfare. Originally published in 1949, Parkinson’s collection is an illuminating companion perfect for those who enjoy naval history and fiction, including Patrick O’Brian, Alexander Kent, and Parkinson’s own Richard Delancey novels. Cyril Northcote Parkinson pursued a distinguished academic career on both sides of the Atlantic and first became famous for “Parkinson’s Law”—work expands to fill the time allotted to it. Parkinson wrote many books on British politics and economics. His first fictional effort, a “biography” of Horatio Hornblower, met with considerable acclaim and led to the Richard Delancey series. C. Northcote Parkinson died in 1993.

An anthology of stories chronicling the daily life of a man in the British navy during the Napoleonic wars.

A Conquest Novel

By David Donachie

1033, on the Norman–French border: It is thirty years before William Duke of Normandy sails to England and does battle at Hastings, but the events leading up to that epic moment are already taking shape. The twelve sons of Tancred de Hauteville are following in their father’s footsteps. As knights, they have but one true purpose: to fight. But when they are denied service with their duke, they are forced to take employment as mercenaries, their unequalled battle skills for hire to the highest bidder.

Eleventh-century Italy: The Byzantine Empire rules much of Europe, but in the Italian states to the south it does so in the face of constant revolt from its unwilling subjects – a strife that extends from the great trading ports to the rich agricultural lands of Apulia. The Lombards, heirs to a northern tribe, are no exception and their leader, Arduin of Fassano, feels the time may have come to rejoin his brethren and rise up in revolt against their Eastern rulers. And so he brings into the conflict the fearsome de Hauteville mercenary brothers to help him in his quest to destroy the power of Constantinople.

In twenty years, the de Hauteville brothers have risen from penniless obscurity to become the most potent warrior family in Christendom: depended on by the Pope, feared by Byzantium, and respected by the Holy Roman Emperor. And now Roger, the youngest son, has finally come to Italy, where he also proves himself to be a great warrior and canny politician. It is he who will raise the family to the pinnacle of influence, not as vassals beholden to a greater power, but rulers in their own right. But the path is not easy; brotherly love only goes so far and nothing has altered in the bubbling stew of Italian politics.

Victory and defeat, betrayal and revenge combine as the desperation to rule becomes an intense battle, testing even the strongest of ties. Through it all shines the loyalty of blood that binds families – and warriors – together. This is the epic story of a true band of brothers.

Will the might of the Byzantine Empire crush Arduin’s revolt? Can his ambitious plan succeed, or will the treachery that stalks the land play into the hands of the Normans?

A Crusades Novel

A Crusades Novel

By David Donachie

By David Donachie

Following David Donachie’s earlier Conquest trilogy, the de Hautville warrior dynasty shows no sign of falling back into obscurity.

1096: The Pope has called for a crusade to free Jerusalem, and half the warriors of Europe have responded. Among them is the Norman Count Bohemund, onetime enemy of Byzantium, whose help is required if progress is to be possible. His first task, pushing back the infidel Turks from the holy places of Christendom, calls for an uneasy alliance with old enemy Emperor Alexius. But can the crusaders trust the wily emperor? With past tensions and grudges arising, Bohemund is faced once again with the opportunity to gain power, land, and riches for himself—but will the risks of doing so outweigh the rewards? The crusaders must contend with sieges, open battles, hunger, and want on their journey to mighty Antioch, where they face the stiffest test of their mettle. As defeat threatens, only Norman discipline can save the day.

The crusading armies go from besieging the citadel of Antioch to themselves being besieged. Although Bohemund, leader of the Apulian Normans, manages to take a firm grip on the city, the army of crusaders is depleted, thinned by death, disease, and defection. And for Bohemund and his nephew Tancred there is yet another difficulty: the dissent between the Crusade leaders has broken out into the open, with the wealthy Raymond of Toulouse stirring up conflict. If the Christian host is fighting on two fronts, so is Bohemund himself. With the enemy Turks at his front and his warring peers at his back, can he gain the mighty city of Antioch once and for all? Only one of the greatest battles of the age will decide.

Eleventh-century Italy: The domination of the Normans, the most feared warriors in Christendom, is causing trouble. At their head is Robert de Hauteville, who has colonised much of Italy and now commands the triple dukedom of the extended Norman family. But Robert has made many enemies. As he successfully suppresses a Lombard revolt, his firstborn, Bohemund seeks to assert his natural right as the heir of his father’s dukedom. But with Robert’s second son, Borsa, legally entitled to inherit, his quest is not without conflict. A battle between the sons is inevitable, and blood ties will count for nothing.

Spy for No Country The Story of Ted Hall, the Teenage Atomic Spy Who May Have Saved the World By Dave Lindorff At 18 years of age, Theodore Hall was the youngest physicist on the Manhattan Project, hired as a junior at Harvard and put to work at Los Alamos in 1944. Assigned the job of testing and refining the complex implosion system for the plutonium bomb, Hall was described as “amazingly brilliant” by his superiors on the project, many of whom were Nobel Prize winners. But what Hall’s colleagues didn’t know was that the teenaged Hall was also the youngest spy taken on by the Soviet Union in search of secrets to the atomic bomb. Featuring in-depth research from recently declassified FBI documents, first-hand journals, and personal interviews, investigative journalist Dave Lindorff uncovers the gripping story of a brilliant scientist whose information about the plutonium bomb, including detailed drawings and measurements, proved to be integral to the Soviet’s development of nuclear capabilities. Spy for No Country paints a nuanced picture of a young man who was neither a Communist nor a Soviet sympathizer but acted on what he thought was best for the world. Dave Lindorff is a veteran investigative journalist. He was a two-time Fulbright Professor of Journalism posted in China and Taiwan. He is the author of the critically acclaimed books Marketplace Medicine: Rise of the ForProfit Hospital Chains, Killing Time: Investigation into the Death Penalty Case of Mumia Abu-Jamal, and The Case for Impeachment: The Legal Argument for Removing President George W. How an Unlikely Team of Scientists, Ex-Cons, Women, and Native Americans Helped Win World War II

American PT Boats at Guadalcanal

By Larry J. Hughes

Vivid details about the austere conditions aboard and dangerous nocturnal missions, in a gritty and evocative narrative style.

A vivid history of science and war with accessible explanations of the engineering behind the optical ring sight. Rings of Fire is the story of how Edwin Land, founder of Polaroid, and a unique cast of characters created the calcite-based optical ring sights that helped U.S. naval anti-aircraft guns and army bazookas zero in on targets and claim victory in World War II. It is a story of American ingenuity, determination, and grit in the face of enemy attacks. Larry J. Hughes is a geophysicist with forty years’ experience, with much of that time spent in the field in the western United States, focusing on mineralogy and optics. He lives near Memphis, Tennessee.

By Keith Warren Lloyd

The US Navy’s Patrol Torpedo (PT) boats were used in every theater of WWII, but they are most famous for their daring exploits in the South Pacific, where they were the US Navy’s first line of defense against the “Tokyo Express,” the nightly attacks of Japanese destroyers against American forces on Guadalcanal. Dark Nights, Deadly Waters tells the story of the first PT boats deployed to the fetid and malarial island of Tulagi, in the desperate early days of America’s “island hopping” campaign across the Pacific. Keith Warren Lloyd is an author and historian, a U.S. Navy veteran, and a professional firefighter. He lives in Arizona.

Six Air Forces Over the Atlantic

The U.S. Navy’s Disaster at the Battle of Savo Island in World War II

How the Allies Won the Battle of the Atlantic from the Air

By Lawrence A. De Graw

By Col. Joseph T. Molyson, Jr. (retired)

A minute-by-minute retelling of the First Battle of Savo Island.

The story of WWII’s Battle of the Atlantic from the perspective of the air forces—and airmen—who waged it from the skies above the icy waters.

This naval history, features a colorful narrative that covers the big picture as well as stories of individual vessels and sailors as well as a careful analysis of the battle and just what went wrong for the U.S. Navy off the island of Guadalcanal. Lawrence De Graw served six years in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam era as a translator and interpreter. He spent much of his later career as a technical writer. He lives in Ocala, Florida.

The Battle of the Atlantic was the longest campaign of World War II, lasting the entirety of the war in Europe from September 1939 to May 1945. It was also one of the war’s most complex campaigns, involving strategy, operations, tactics, logistics, politics, diplomacy, and alliances. American, British, and Canadian forces battled Germans at sea and in the air to protect the flow of first material and then men from the United States to the United Kingdom. Massacre at Oradour-sur-Glane

The Top-Secret OSS Operation That Sent Polish Spies behind German Lines in World War II

Nazi Gold and the Murder of an Entire French Town by SS Division Das Reich

By John S. Micgiel

By Vincent dePaul Lupiano

The compelling story of prisoners of war recruited as spies in World War II.

An account of one of the the most horrific events in French history.

Polish Eagles is the story of how American intelligence recruited thirty-two Poles—who had been forcibly conscripted into the German Wehrmacht, were captured in France and Italy, and were pulled from Allied prisoner of war camps— to gather intelligence behind enemy lines up until Germany’s surrender.

On June 8, 1944, a battalion of the 2nd Panzer Division Das Reich surrounded Oradour-sur-Glane, massacred 642 men, women, and children, and razed the village to the ground. This is the shocking story of the Oradour-sur-Glane massacre of every man, woman, and child in the French town and its real cause: how two SS officers “acquired” one million dollars’ worth of gold ingots and how that led to the massacre.

John S. Micgiel served as director of the Institute on East Central Europe, associate director of the Harriman Institute, and adjunct professor of international and public affairs at Columbia University. He is past president of the Kosciuszko Foundation. He received the Commander’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland. Micgiel now teaches at the University of Warsaw. He lives in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Vincent dePaul Lupiano spent four years in the United States Air Force. He flew three combat missions over Vietnam carrying a tape recorder and writing and narrating stories of his experiences for hometown radio stations. He lives in Franklin Lakes, New Jersey.

The Caretakers War Graves Gardeners and the Secret Battle to Rescue Allied Airmen in World War II By Caitlin Galante DeAngelis When the First World War ended, hundreds of British veterans stayed in France to look after the graves of their fallen countrymen as part of the newly chartered Imperial War Graves Commission. As the Second World War swept over Europe, the gardeners were ordered to remain at their posts in Nazi occupied France. Some managed to escape on their own, many were arrested by the Nazis, and a handful of others managed to stay free and join the French Resistance. The Caretakers tells the story of three of these unlikely heroes: Ben Leech, a 51-year-old barman from Manchester, joined the Resistance in Beaumont-Hamel; Rosine Witton, the wife of a British gardener, became a key conductor on the famous Comet Line, a civilian network that rescued Allied airmen, before being arrested by the Gestapo and sent to the squalid Ravensbruck concentration camp; Robert Armstrong, an Irish cemetery gardener working in Valenciennes, became a member of the Resistance. With meticulous research in national archives and the archives of the Commonwealth War Graves Commission, along with personal interviews of the families of British gardeners and American airmen and never-before-published journals and papers of Resistance members, author Caitlin Galante DeAngelis reveals untold stories of human courage, resistance, and survival. Caitlin Galante DeAngelis is an internationally renowned expert on cemeteries. She earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University with a dissertation on the political histories of cemeteries in Britain and America. She is an active member of several UK-based historical associations including the Western Front Association and the Great War Group.

The powerful story of the British cemetery gardeners who secretly aided the French Resistance during WW2.

Super Slick

Inside the French Foreign Legion

Life and Death in a Huey in Vietnam

Adventures with the World’s Most Famous Fighting Force

By Tom Feigel, with Larry Weill

By N. J. Valldejuli A gripping first-hand account of helicopter combat in Vietnam. Less than a year out of high school, Tom Feigel was drafted into the army and assigned to aviation, ultimately to helicopters. Super Slick is the story of his year in Vietnam. Heart-pumping missions into hot landing zones. Adrenaline-fueled flights into enemy-infested jungles. Terrifying nighttime operations where trees posed nearly as much danger as the enemy. This is close as you can get to being inside a Huey—to hearing the radio chatter, feeling the thrum of the rotors, the pounding of the door guns.

A former legionnaire lifts the veil on one of the world’s most mysterious elite fighting units. The French Foreign Legion has been romanticized in literature, song, and movies as a place for men to prove their mettle or start their lives over. In this colorful book, a blend of firsthand experience and interviews with former legionnaires, N. J. Valldejuli gives an insider’s perspective on what it means—and what it takes—to be a legionnaire.

Tom Feigel received a Purple Heart, the Air Medal, and four Army Commendation Medals for his service in Vietnam. He now lives in Elizabeth City, North Carolina. Larry Weill is a retired U.S. Navy Reserve captain. He lives near Rochester, New York.

N. J. Valldejuli was born in England and raised in New York state. Inspired by stories of the unit’s exploits, he joined the French Foreign Legion in 1986, serving until his honorable medical discharge in 1988. A graduate of Kenyon College, Ohio, and Lund University, Sweden, Valldejuli has taught English and history around the world. He lives in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Long Time Gone

I Want to Take You Higher

The Perfect Harmony and Imperfect Lives of the Everly Brothers

The Life and Times of Sly and the Family Stone, Revised & Updated

By Mark Ribowsky

By Jeff Kaliss

The authoritative companion to an unforgettable collection of songs.

Reissued in anticipation of the forthcoming documentary on the bad by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson, winner of the 2021 Oscar for Best Documentary Feature for Summer of Soul.

Magnificent as the duo was, they have until now never received a definitive biography. In Long Time Gone, the details, small and great, roll along on the mighty “Mississippi,” in near novel-like fashion, revealing facts drawn from exhaustive research and first-hand interviews that trace the character and influences of these hardy but flawed men who grew from teenagers to old men before our eyes. Mark Ribowsky has authored over thirty-five acclaimed books about some of the most significant figures in popular culture. His writing has appeared in Rolling Stone, and others. He lives in Boca Raton, Florida.

Sly & the Family Stone left an indelible stamp on rock, funk, pop, and hip hop, and their enigmatic frontman continues to inspire fascination and speculation. This updated edition fills in the gaps since the book’s original 2008 publication, including Sly’s legal action against his former manager, the death of Cynthia Robinson, and the new projects undertaken by family and former collaborators. Jeff Kaliss has featured and reviewed classical, jazz, rock, and world musics and other entertainment for the San Francisco Chronicle and a host of other regional, national, international, and web-based publications. He holds an MFA in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University.

Letters from an Actor Anniversary Edition By William Redfield, foreword by Sam Mendes, afterword by Adam Redfield The legendary 1964 Broadway run of Hamlet directed by John Gielgud is one of the most famous productions of Shakespeare’s most important play. Audacious for its time in concept and execution, it placed the actors in everyday clothes within an unassuming “rehearsal” set, with the Ghost of Hamlet’s father projected as a shadow against the rear wall and voiced by the director himself. It was also a runaway critical and financial success, breaking the then-record for most performances of a Broadway show. This was in no small part due to the starring role played by Richard Burton, whose romance with Elizabeth Taylor was the object of widespread fascination. Present throughout, and ever attentive to the backstage drama and towering egos on display, was the actor William Redfield, who played Guildenstern. During the three months of the play’s preparation, from rehearsals through out-of-town tryouts to the gala opening night on Broadway, Redfield wrote a series of letters describing the daily happenings and his impressions of them. In 1967, they were collected into Letters from an Actor, a brilliant and unusual book that has since become a classic behind-the-scenes account that remains an indispensable contribution to theatrical history and lore.

Bringing back a classic behindthe-scene book with a foreword by Sam Mendes and and afterword by the author’s son.

Applause

This new edition at last brings Redfield’s classic back into print, as The Motive and the Cue—the Sam Mendes-directed play about the Gielgud production that is based in part on the book—continues its successful run on London’s West End.

The Playwright’s Toolkit

Theatre Kids

By Justin Maxwell

By John DeVore

Helpful exercises from leading playwrights for the novice and the experienced.

A hilarious, unforgettable account of life, art, and theatre on the margins.

The Playwright’s Toolkit is a stimulating and wide-ranging resource for both beginning and experienced dramatists. It brings together over 60 invigorating, provocative, and irreverent exercises contributed by leading English-language playwrights, covering all stages of the writing process. It offers an accessible roadmap for those who have never written a play and provides new angles and solutions for seasoned writers struggling with a particular challenge. Covered is everything from generating ideas and world-building, through dialogue and plotting, to revision and the last steps before releasing a play into the world, making this an endlessly useful guide to building better plays.

In 2004, in a small theater in Brooklyn, a coterie of desperate and dedicated theater artists staged an experimental, four-hour adaptation of William Faulkner’s novel As I Lay Dying. Its centerpiece was an enormous wooden coffin that dominated the space, leaving room for fewer audience members than actors. It ran for only eight performances, fewer than one hundred people saw it, and it changed John DeVore’s life. Out of these inauspicious circumstances, Theatre Kids weaves a hilarious and unforgettable account of outsize ambition, artistic ingenuity, dashed hopes, and the magic of theatre in fin-de-siecle New York City.

Justin Maxwell has had his plays produced throughout North America. He is an Associate Professor in the Creative Writing Workshop, the MFA program at the University of New Orleans. Backbeat June 2024 • 216 pages

The Life and Times of Betty Boop

Schitt’s Creek and the Legacy of Queer Television

The 100-Year History of an Animated Icon By Peter Benjaminson

By Emily Garside How Schitt’s Creek became the surprise hit that changed the way we think about LGBTQ relationships. How did this supposedly light comedy embrace an activist perspective? And how does it use (and subvert) its romantic-comedy genre in order to make that activism even more powerful? Combining a fan’s affection with a scholar’s insight, Garside explains how this “little show that could” is the product of a long history of queer activism, breaking down barriers and marking a turning point in future representation of LGBTQ stories. INTER NATIONAL AUTHOR

As a journalist and academic, Emily Garside has a wide range of experience in cultural analysis and has worked for the British National Theatre as a consultant on their 2017 production of Angels in America.

The first biography of this major American cultural symbol. This book describes Betty Boop’s creation and incredibly active romantic and family life as revealed in her numerous comic strips, comic books, cartoons, and movies since 1930. Peter Benjaminson illuminates social trends that have kept Betty popular for nearly a century. Before beginning his book-writing career, Peter Benjaminson worked as a reporter for twelve years for The Los Angeles Times, The Detroit Free Press, and The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Later, he wrote for Rolling Stone, Detroit Magazine, Detroit Discovery Magazine, Atlanta Magazine, among others. As a freelance author, Peter has written books on a wide range of topics.

On Marilyn cuts through the rumors and myths to present the real person behind the queen of movies and pop culture. From her chaotic childhood in Depression-era Los Angeles to her rise in the world of Hollywood and finally her untimely death—On Marilyn explores the legendary star’s family history, connection to the movies from childhood, her personal life as an adult, and her interest in continually educating herself. On Marilyn is compulsively readable—instead of chronological dates and dry accounts of events, there are chapters about specific aspects of her life and career. What did Marilyn like to eat? What types of books did she read? Was she really plus size? Did she nearly bring down a political empire? And how did she actually die? This book explores everything—and vividly brings to light the truth about the world’s greatest movie star.

Marlon Brando Hollywood Rebel By Burt Kearns Over the last eighty years, Marlon Brando has become such an object of fascination, buried under so many accreted layers of mythos and half-truth, that it is all but impossible to see the man behind the icon. As we approach the centennial of this undisputed American legend, Marlon Brando: Hollywood Rebel is a revelatory biography that tells its story the same way the man himself approached a role: from the inside. Author, journalist, and pop culture authority Burt Kearns digs deep into the unexplored aspects of Brando’s career, interests, and singular personality, revealing how his roles on stage and screen, combined with his wild and restless personal life, helped to transform popular culture and society writ large. His influence was both broad and deep. Brando’s intense approach to acting technique was emulated by his contemporaries as well as generations of actors who followed, from Nicholson and DeNiro to DiCaprio and Gosling. This book also looks at Brando’s legacy beyond acting in the areas of youth culture, rock ‘n’ roll and punk rock culture, the sexual revolution and political and environmental activism. Burt Kearns is an author, journalist, and “show business and pop culture savant” (Vanity Fair). Kearns has broken major stories as a television and print journalist. He is best known as an Emmy-winning television and motion picture producer, director, and writer. He has written and produced dozens of non-fiction television series such as Kardashian: The Man Who Saved OJ Simpson, the nonfiction comedy film High There, and documentaries such as Bin Laden’s Escape.

How the greatest actor of the twentieth century helped lead the world into the twentyfirst, startlingly intimate and powerfully told.

Starring Joan Crawford

By Samuel Garza Bernstein Joan Crawford: the name has an enduring fascination. Forty-five years after her death, Crawford remains a familiar icon in pop culture and the entertainment world. Certainly the camp bathos of Mommie Dearest has played a part in her continued relevance. But it is ultimately her work and career themselves that account for her remarkable longevity in the culture. From her first film in 1925, to her rise to stardom in 1928, and on to the hit films she appeared in through the 1960s, she continually molded and remolded herself, crafting an indelible image and ensuring her place in the American pantheon. Having carved out a revolutionary path through the entertainment industry while relying on men as little as possible—whether her studio bosses or her many husbands—she created a gallery of strong, assertive women who outsmarted men and refused to conform to gender expectations. In movies like Mildred Pierce, The Damned Don’t Cry, Johnny Guitar, and What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?, among many others, she played to win, becoming a lodestar to LGBT audiences, a model of feminist self-determination for women, and an unforgettable icon for everyone. INTER NATIONAL AUTHOR

Stonewall Book Award-winning writer Samuel Garza Bernstein is an author, screenwriter, and playwright whose work often reflects the wild intersections of modern life. He, husband Ronald Shore, and their pack of incorrigible dachshunds split their time between Porto, Portugal and Los Angeles, California.

How ‘High Fidelity’ Found Its Rhythm and Became a Movie Classic

The Making of ‘The Sixth Sense’

91

By Mackenzie Nichols

By Andrew Buss A rollicking oral history of the making of High Fidelity and its influence on pop culture. The movie High Fidelity is sacred ground for music lovers and cinephiles alike. The story of Rob Gordon and his coterie of vinyl snobs made it cool to let your geek flag fly and embrace your irrational enthusiasm. Buss draws on interviews with actors like John Cusack and Jack Black along with all the key principals behind the scenes, including director Stephen Frears and the movie’s screenwriter, producers, and composer. Taken together, they offer a multi-perspectival picture that captures the legacy of the film, showing how it brilliantly captured a cross-section of ‘90s culture while anticipating the current era of cultural surfeit and content overload. Andrew Buss is a journalist and author of oral histories on Zoolander, Freaks and Geeks, and Scott Pilgrim vs. the Universe.

A fascinating, kaleidoscopic oral history of how one film unexpectedly changed the course of modern moviemaking. Well before “the twist” had become M. Night Shyamalan’s cinematic calling card and spoiler alerts were de rigueur for online movie reviews, there was The Sixth Sense. Written and directed by Shyamalan, who had been working on the script since he was 25, the 1999 film was a landmark in onscreen storytelling and the evolution of the horror and supernatural thriller genres. In I See Dead People, entertainment journalist Mackenzie Nichols weaves together interviews with Shyamalan, the movie’s stars, crew members, and others into an oral history of how an iconic movie was made. Mackenzie Nichols is a staff writer for Variety. She has written oral histories of such films as Gladiator, Wedding Crashers, and Jennifer’s Body.

He learned Portuguese as a third language in early adulthood and German in his thirties. The Power of Personality Unlock the Secrets to Understanding Everyone in Your Life—Including Yourself! Eric Gee Conformity is the new black—there is safety in numbers— so what happens when individuals come into conflict with the “shoe” values they’ve been forced to wear from an early age? They will either submit to the pressure and lose sight of themselves or fight like hell and be socially excommunicated. Too often personality distinctions are disowned and labeled as “weakness”, or we default to accepting surface differences in the name of “diversity”. If we truly want to coexist with one another, we must learn that even our most sacred values deviate from person to person, and it’s that diversity that makes humanity strong. The Power of Personality demystifies the sixteen different personality types by teaching the reader how to identify and appreciate their own unique type and that of others. By re-examining previously held assumptions on personality (birth order, cultural stereotypes, extroversion vs. introversion, type-A personalities) and debunking/ clarifying them, the reader will be able to understand a person deeper than that person understands themselves. Considering the existential threat of our current, fractured sociopolitical climate tearing itself from within, this skill is not a luxury; it’s a necessity. Eric Gee has performed personality type-based life coaching for over twenty years. He built and operated a successful education company that utilized his personality typing method to better the lives of more than twenty thousand students, parents, and teachers. As creator of the Youtopia Project website and the Youtopia 16 assessment, Eric Gee has disseminated his method to over half a million users since the website’s creation in 2016. He has lectured on personality typing at universities such as UC Riverside and Otis College of Art and Design.

The Anger Myth

The Fearful Mind

Understanding and Overcoming the Mental Habits that Steal Your Joy

A Psychological Portrait of Our Most Misunderstood Emotion

By Trish Ahjel Roberts

By Alby Elias

Inspires change in the way people approach their own anger in today’s overheated cultural climate.

Argues that fear is a motivating force rather than a despicable emotion.

The Anger Myth is a step-by-step guide to help readers address their anger in all its forms for a happier, healthier, and more productive life. Whether it manifests as incessant complaining, jealousy, disappointment, impatience, frustration, resentment, or annoyance, anger lies. It brings destruction, stealing time, money, creativity, and joy. Anger has a profound emotional cost. It prevents people from living the life they really want.

In sharp contrast to the existing literature, this book argues that fear, overriding all other emotions, operates relentlessly in the unconscious mind as a motivating force and renders life compatible with survival. Fear appeals can bring healthy behavioral changes; the stronger the appeal, the more persuasive it is.

Trish Ahjel Roberts, MBA, CLC, RYT-200 is a transformational coach and happiness expert who has created her own unique brand of MindBlowing Happiness™ coaching which incorporates mindfulness techniques, life, and career coaching along with Buddhist and yogic philosophy. The Missing Peace

The Illusion of Control

Rewire Your Brain, Reduce Anxiety, and Recreate Your Life

A Practical Guide to Avoid Futile Struggles By Wolfgang Linden

By Laura Rhodes-Levin A roadmap out of anxiety and to self-acceptance and happiness. The Missing Peace equips readers with a new and relatable lens to seeing anxiety for what it is: a liar that predicts doom. They will learn how to re-train themselves from years of personal and inherited anxiety. What once seemed overwhelming and unsurpassable is within reach. They will learn to reframe their insecurities, turn off negative self-talk, navigate life free from fear, and set real and longlasting boundaries with which they are aligned. Then they will discover how to live their lives like a vacation and find their true purpose.

Describes how people grossly overestimate the power they have over others while simultaneously missing opportunities to enjoy and use the power they have over themselves. The Illusion of Control makes the case that people waste an inordinate amount of energy trying to control events and people that they have little or no control over. At the same time, they often complicate relationships in attempts at over-control while missing out on enjoying the power they have over themselves. Based on scientific evidence (and lots of real-life experience), The Illusion of Control makes teaches how to reduce stress and improve quality of life by giving up ineffective habits and attempts at controlling the uncontrollable.

Laura Rhodes-Levin, LMFT, is a licensed therapist specializing in treating anxiety, depression, and trauma. She holds a Master of Science in Counseling and is known for her original and successful approach to understanding anxiety.

Wolfgang Linden is a Professor Emeritus in Clinical and Health Psychology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada.

End of the World Civilization and Its Fate By Jon Mills Are we on the brink of human extinction? Is civilization destined toward self-annihilation? We must not underestimate the risk of the possibility that we may become extinct fairly soon. We are facing a planetary ecological crisis with runaway greenhouse gas emissions, environmental destruction, extreme climate change, human overpopulation, global catastrophic hazards including the threat of world war, nuclear holocaust, bioterror, pandemic infectious diseases, famine, water scarcity, religious fanaticism, techno nihilism, public health calamities, obscene disparities in wealth and poverty, civil disorder, and the anathema of evil that could bring about the end of the world. Philosopher and psychoanalyst Jon Mills provides the first book of its kind that examines the ominous existential risks that could bring about the end of civilization. Drawing on the psychological motivations, unconscious conflicts, and cultural complexes that drive human behavior and social relations, he offers fresh new perspectives on the looming fate of humanity based on a collective bystander disorder.

A fascinating journey into the little-known feedback processes that govern our daily lives.

Rescuing Science

Edmond Halley

Restoring Trust In an Age of Doubt

The Many Discoveries of the Most Curious Astronomer Royal

By Paul M. Sutter

By David K. Love An insider look at science’s elitist and exclusionary politics and practices. Rescuing Science peels back the layers of academia to reveal how science operates, why it’s so powerful and vital, and yet like any human endeavor, flawed. Sutter reveals a community that has come to disregard the public, is obsessed with money and politics, limits the entrance of minorities, and permits fraud and lies in the pursuit of notoriety. Paul M. Sutter is a professor in astrophysics at the Institute for Advanced Computation Science at Stony Brook University and a guest researcher at the Flatiron Institute in New York City. Paul hosts a variety of science shows and has served as a consultant for major TV shows, such as Star Trek Discovery and Another Life.

A revelatory and deeply researched biography of a man whose defining achievement isn’t even the half of it. While Edmond Halley is known thanks largely to the comet bearing his name, his contributions to the fields of astronomy, philosophy, history, mathematics, engineering, and actuarial science are mostly overlooked. This incisive and surprising biography reveals the boundless mind and endless curiosity of Edmond Halley and firmly cements the legacy of the second Astronomer Royal among the first-rate scientists of his time. David K. Love is a member of the Royal Astronomical Society and lectured on the history of astronomy and on the origins and evolution of the universe. His book Kepler and the Universe publishes in paperback in February 2024. Love lives in Exeter, UK. INTER NATIONAL AUTHOR

Mind Game An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes By Julie Kliegman In Mind Game: An Inside Look at the Mental Health Playbook of Elite Athletes, Julie Kliegman offers insight into how elite athletes navigate mental performance and mental illness—and what non-athletes can learn from them. Kliegman also examines the impacts of depression, anxiety, bipolar disorders, substance abuse, and more, with a keen eye toward moving forward with acceptance, progress, and problem-solving. Featuring insightful interviews with Olympians Chloe Kim, McKayla Maroney, and Adam Rippon, NBA players Kevin Love and DeMar DeRozan, former U.S. Open tennis champ Bianca Andreescu, and many other athletes and experts, Mind Game breaks down the ongoing, heartening movement of athletes across sports coming forward to get the care they need and deserve—and to help others feel safe opening up about their struggles, as well. The Burden of Sports How and Why Athletes Struggle with Mental Health By John Weston Parry A comprehensive examination of the mental health challenges that elite athletes face in America’s most popular sports. Athletes that compete at a high level face numerous mental health challenges as they strive for perfection and victory in their sports. And while mental health awareness for athletes is better than it once was, efforts to hide the existence of these mental disorders and challenges remain well-ingrained. In The Burden of Sports, John Weston Parry examines the mental health of elite American athletes generally, as well as in relation to spectator sports propaganda, the legal system, politics, and the effects of the Covid pandemic. This book covers mental health conditions that any elite athlete may encounter, from depression and anxiety to substance abuse and concussion-caused brain damage, to the special challenges of female, queer, transgender, and intersex athletes. Featured throughout are narratives of well-known American athletes, including Simone Biles, Naomi Osaka, Michael Sam, and Tiger Woods. Addressing the mental health of athletes and challenging the public perception of such struggles is long overdue.

A long overdue examination of mental health in sports, and why so many athletes struggle with it.

The Grandfather of Black Basketball The Life and Times of Dr. E. B. Henderson By Edwin Bancroft Henderson II The Grandfather of Black Basketball is the first contemporary biography of the man credited with introducing basketball to African Americans on a widescale and organized basis. Dr. Edwin Bancroft Henderson was the son of working-class parents born in slavery. A driven, intelligent, and charismatic young man, Henderson attended Harvard University’s Dudley Sargent School of Physical Training. There he met the leaders in the new field of physical education and recognized athletics—and basketball, especially—as a public health initiative and a way that Black youth could gain college scholarships and debunk the idea of racial inferiority. In this book Edwin Bancroft Henderson II, Dr. Henderson’s grandson, provides unprecedented detail and insight into this influential figure in Black history. Overlooked for decades, Henderson was finally enshrined in the National Basketball Hall of Fame in 2013 as a contributor to the game. The Grandfather of Black Basketball gives long-overdue recognition to a sports pioneer, civil rights activist, author, educator, and pragmatic humanitarian who fought his entire life to improve opportunities for African American youth through athletics. Edwin Bancroft Henderson II is the founding president and director of the Tinner Hill Heritage Foundation, whose mission it is to research, preserve and celebrate the African American and civil rights history of Falls Church, Fairfax County, and Northern Virginia. He received the NAACP’s African American History Preservation Award and was named a National Trust for Historic Preservation Diversity Scholar. He is a Life Member of the NAACP and a member of the Historical Society of Washington. He has served on the Falls Church Historical Commission since 1995. Henderson was an educator for 25 years and is the namesake of Dr. E. B. Henderson.

Olympic Legends from Tennessee State

Celebrating Female Firsts in Sports

By Aime Alley Card

By Bonnie-Jill Laflin

An inspirational story of achieving Olympic glory against the odds.

The inspiring stories of nineteen groundbreaking women in the world of sport.

The Tigerbelles tells the epic story of the 1960 Tennessee State University all-black women’s track team, which found Olympic glory at the 1960 games in Rome. The Tigerbelles wanted to change the world’s perception of what a group of young Black women in the Jim Crow south were capable of. Operating on a shoestring budget and pitted dirt track, they shared a common goal: to represent the USA in Track and Field. Based on memoirs and interviews with surviving team members, this is the story of an impossible dream come true.

In A League of Her Own some of the most influential women in sports tell their stories of courage, adversity, and triumph to trailblazer Bonnie-Jill Laflin. Using exclusive interviews and her own unique lens, former NBA scout and NFL cheerleader Bonnie-Jill Laflin captures the remarkable life journeys of these iconic women whose bravery and hard work have changed the face of sports and culture.

Aime Alley Card has an active presence on social media in the writers’ communities and is a nonfiction editor for Pangyrus literary magazine and a board member for the Women’s National Book Association, Boston Chapter.

Tinseltown Gangsters

Street Fight

The Rise and Decline of the Mob in Hollywood

The Chicago Taxi Wars of the 1920s

By Jeffrey Sussman

By Anne Morrissy

The fast-paced true story of the Hollywood Mob.

The until now untold story of Chicago’s deadly taxicab wars.

Like sharks to blood in the water, the mob arrived in Hollywood greedy and ready to tear away huge chunks of cash. Opportunistic mobsters saw labor unions as the means for muscling into the movie industry and extorting millions of dollars from studio bosses. Painting colorful portraits of numerous mobsters, producers, actors, and directors, Tinseltown Gangsters tells the gripping, true story of corruption and greed in Hollywood throughout much of the twentieth century. Jeffrey Sussman is the author of 16 books, six of which have been published by Rowman and Littlefield, including Sin City Gangsters: The Rise and Decline of the Mob in Las Vegas and Big Apple Gangsters: The Rise and Decline of the Mob in New York. Jeffrey lives in New York City.

Street Fight is the story of the deadly taxicab wars that plagued Chicago during the 1920s and led to laws that still govern how cab companies work today. With extensive research and interviews, Anne Morrissy vividly recreates Chicago’s Taxi Wars, bringing to print this nearly forgotten story. Buffeted by a supporting cast of larger-than-life Jazz Age characters — including Johnny Torrio and Al Capone — Street Fight: The Chicago Taxi Wars of the 1920s restores to history these deadly wars that played out on the city’s streets a century ago. Anne Morrissy is a writer and magazine editor. Her first book, Running the Reds: The First 100 Years of the Water Safety Patrol, 1920-2020, was published in 2019. A graduate of Kenyon College, she splits her time between Chicago and Williams Bay, Wisconsin.

Oppenheimer Portrait of an Enigma By Jeremy Bernstein Illustrated with black-and-white photographs. J. Robert Oppenheimer was a puzzle to everyone. The nuclear physicist most responsible for the creation of the atomic bomb, he was a genius both scientifically and otherwise. His standards were impossibly high. He read widely in many languages, wrote poetry, and did superb science. Yet in Jeremy Bernstein’s intensely interesting biographical memoir, Oppenheimer emerges as a man unsure of his identity and captive to an element of selfdestructiveness in his makeup. As a former colleague of Oppenheimer’s, Jeremy Bernstein has composed a book that is both personal and historical, bringing the reader close to the life and workings of an extraordinary and controversial man. Filled with revealing insights and details that set the historical record straight, Oppenheimer is that rare quantity: a vastly entertaining study of one of the most important and enigmatic scientists of the atomic age. Theoretical physicist and a writer on popular science, Jeremy Bernstein is a former staff writer for the New Yorker, contributor to The Atlantic Monthly, New York Review of Books, and Scientific American, among others, and author of numerous books.

The Battle of Prokhorovka

Generals in the Making

The Tank Battle at Kursk, the Largest Clash of Armor in History

How Marshall, Eisenhower, Patton, and Their Peers Became the Commanders Who Won World War II

By Christopher A. Lawrence

By Benjamin Runkle An account of the largest armor battle in history. The Battle of Kursk was one of the defining moments of World War II. In July 1943, German forces launched a massive attack. The resulting clash of tanks at Prokhorovka marked a turning point on the Eastern Front; the Red Army gained the strategic initiative and would not lose it. Christopher A. Lawrence is president of The Dupuy Institute, an organization dedicated to scholarly research and analysis of military history and current armed conflict. He lives near Washington, DC.

An invaluable prequel to every history of World War II. Part military history and part biography, Generals in the Making is the first comprehensive history of the United States’ World War II generals between the wars, covering not only the lives and careers these officers, but also the crucible of military ideas and innovation in which they served. Benjamin Runkle is a former paratrooper and presidential speechwriter with a Harvard PhD and a Bronze Star from Operation Iraqi Freedom. He is currently a senior policy fellow with Artis International and an adjunct lecturer in Johns Hopkins University’s Global Security Program. He lives in Alexandria, Virginia.
