COVER DESIGN
Maplewood West Townhomes Maplewood West project started as a rezoning and feasibility study of a few single family lots in the District of North Vancouver. The Maplewood Creek passes through north of the site, where the site entries such as parkade ramp, pedestrian bridge and fire access lane cross it. To the south an off-site maple tree redefines the site setbacks. Building #1 North and South are separated by egress stair and have thirty stacked townhouses (3-storey back to back units on garden level suites) over the parkade slab. Pedestrian bridge crosses the creek to the open entrance with mail kiosks, mews and children’s play area. Building #2 and #3 are lower in height (3-storey units over the parkade) in order to work with the neighbouring Maplewood Place project. The parkade’s finished grade is defined by the flood level and its ramp is parallel to the pedestrian bridge and designed with stepped planters around them to define the project’s entry. There is an elevator from the parkade to the mews that is located centrally in the project and adjacent to the accessible/adaptable units. All the units either have patios or roof decks. The fire access lane is also designed as another kid’s play area in the project with partial colourful pavement, caulk boards and seating areas on the sides.

Palmeira International Master Plan Location: Luanda, Angola, Africa Project Date: 2015 Site Area: 200 ha Role: Design Concept and Development of Commercial Centre, Cinema and Two Villa Prototypes, and Façade’s Conceptual Design for the Commercial Centre and the Sales Centre Building
Palmeira International Master Plan Angola is a country that had a civil war for so many years and the inequality of classes is very high. There are so many expats in the country as it is being developed by the oil industry. Palmeira International Master Plan was created as a high-end low density single family community as the ‘bookends’ to the Kilamba Kiaxi new city. It is intended to establish and promote a healthy and relaxing life style for the emerging middle class in Luanda, attract more permanent residents and set up a successful single family community model in the urban context of Luanda. The Sales Centre flanks one side of the grand community entrance to a new residential community in Luanda, Angola. The building creates a bold face to the street with a façade in the abstracted form of Baobab Tree. This same expression will be repeated on the opposite side of the community entrance in a future commercial village. The Sales Centre building and Commercial Centre’s skin will be backlit at night with changing gradations of colour and brightness bringing a bold sense of form, colour, and texture to the building advertising its presence to the passers-by. The interior courtyard of the building is in stark contrast to the outside street façade. The building wraps around a calm garden oasis creating a strong dialogue between the building and the landscape, inviting the visitor in to enjoy the tranquil setting.
Palmeira International Commercial Centre The Commercial Centre concept is a dynamic pedestrian-oriented experience. The two-storey interior experience is scaled to the pedestrian with an emphasis on great shopping, eating and entertainment. The public space is full of opportunities for events such as fashion shows, displays of products and informal gathering.

The interior ‘Space’ is scaled to the enjoyment of the pedestrian experience, creating varied spaces for gathering, outdoor eating and socializing. The design offers respite from the sun through deep overhangs, arcades, trellises and screens. Palmeira International Villas The Villas in the Palmeira International Community are based on a tropical modern concept with open floor plans and strong indoor-outdoor relationships. The homes encourage a social, relaxed lifestyle designed with entertainment in mind. The facades are based on simple geometries with deep recesses for entries and porches, extended roof overhangs and accent wood screens. The community is a mix of duplex homes of 150m2, mid-size single family homes ranging from 200m2 to 350 m2, and large single family homes ranging from 400 to 880m2.
Villa Prototype M-S0 _ Front View
Villa Prototype M-S0 _ Backyard View
The design was based on the construction techniques and the worker’s ability in the construction field. M-S0 and M-S1 villas were two of the smaller single family homes with three bedrooms. All the houses are designed with a care taker suite and a swimming pool in the back yard. The public spaces of these houses are on the ground level facing and opening to the backyard in order to extend the interaction and gathering spaces. The private spaces like bedrooms are all on the upper level.

Changde Destination Island Masterplan Location: Changde, China Project Date: 2015 Role: Form and Character Design of All Public Buildings and Apartment Buildings for a charettee
Hotel, Marina, Apartment Buildings and Single Family Villas
Apartment Buildings
Changde Island To the north of Changde city there is a farming island on a lake. Most beaches and islands on this lake are being rezoned for leasure activities to attract more travellers and locals. This Island was being used for farming and few industries in the past, but currently it is almost abandoned. The new masterplan accomodated a hotel zone, commercial centre with bars and restaurants, apartments and single family houses with an addition of water canal system for access to all these houses. For improving the entry experience to the island the hotel and commercial centre are closer to the main access road. There is a pedestrian path along all the coast line of the publice buildings and the apartment buildings, sometimes very linear or close to the water level and sometimes expanding to the in-between spaces of the buildings.

Coyote Creek Mixed-use Development and Townhomes Location: Surrey, BC, Canada Project Date: 2017-Present Site Area: 9.3 ha Role: Full responsibility of the Amenity Building from Massing Study to Constrcution Drawings, SPEC, Coordination, and Design Development of the Mixed-use Building Mixed-use Building
Amenity Building
Coyote Creek Mixed-use Development Situated on a portion of the existing Eaglequest Golf Course, this mixed-use development envisions a new comprehensive community which combines a mix of housing choice including apartments, townhomes and duplex’s situated on a sloping site with distant south-western views. Further amenities proposed include contemporary architecture accented with wood toned soffits and paneling giving warmth to the buildings character. The commercial CRU’s at grade spill out to a pedestrian walk, patio and convenience parking. The townhomes and duplex’s feature a contemporary prairie style of architecture with large roof over hangs, shingle siding and wall panels with fine scaled trim details adding to the visual texture of the homes. The Amenity building is located at the main intersection within the community and provides a social heart for residence. The building’s morphology and materials combine and connect the architectural language of the Apartment building with the townhouses.

Rotterdam Hybrid: A New Type of Block (Nominated for Archiprix 2014) Master Thesis Project 2012_2013 TU Delft_ Public Buildings Department Supervisors: Nicola Marzot, Sussane Komossa, Jelke Fokkinga (Building Technology), Leo de Ruijsscher (Climate Design) Project Team: Herman Gaarmen, Sijme Van Jasrsveld Location: Rotterdam (Lijnbaan_Coolsingel), The Netherlands
Extra information Participation: The analysis, masterplan, the Mat (commercial) and the Ring (dwellings) and the principals of the tower were done as a group. The tower is designed in three parts in more detail by each person. In this portfolio the information about the other scalarities of masterplan is not shown. For more information contact: roxanabdo@gmail.com
Extending The Informal Spaces (A New Type of Block) The city of Rotterdam is a layered city. The block we are dealing with is built up out of the ABN AMRO Bank, Lijnbaan (both monuments), the 1970’s pavilions in front of the bank building. Our approach for the block is to respect, strengthen and connect these scales and so shaping an informal space within the block, the living room. We do this by introducing the small-scale commercial MAT building (defining the ground), by introducing a ring of dwellings (connecting the monuments and defining the living room’s edges) and by introducing the tower (the missing large scale).
Research and Masterplan and Design Principles of the Tower The construction of the tower plays an important role in realizing

Section The highest part of the tower is a multi-cultural museum referring to the global scale. Rotterdam is a multi-cultural society, more than half of the population are non-Dutch. The museum is shaped according to the idea of ‘Architectural Promenade’. It is a sensorial narrative that takes the visitors from the top threshold (which is a roof garden with restaurants and cafes and the view towards Blaak) and take them down to the museum to experience the ‘collections’ and various ‘events’ on their way down, like the ‘Event Hall’ that is towards Welheminaplein and finally getting to the other threshold. The informal spaces of the museum are in-between spaces.

Tehran’s “New Arts” School Bachelor Thesis Project 2009_2010 Azad University of Central Tehran Supervisor: Kaveh Bazrafkan Location: Tehran (Niavaran), Iran
“New Arts” School It is a school for graduate students in New Arts like Video Art, Installation, Digital Art, Environmental Art and Photography. Artists express themselves through their art and they need to show case their work to people. Therefore, the vision for Art Plaza is a building that invites the city in, designing a frame for the interaction between a rich inner life and the city. It will be a place of life, openness, communication, and exchange between people. The important fact is the relationship between the New Arts and the space; how they can affect a social space by sound, light, colour and image. New Arts in each country is a mixture of a specific region’s culture, global art and technology.

This site faces an important public project, Niavaran Cultural centre, which was built during the modernism. The entrance of this project is on the same axe as the cultural centre and has a similar entrance heirarchy. There are two folded concrete slabs that are the public spaces of the Art School, they correspond to the site topography whilst they are placed according to the axe of the Niavaran Cultural centre and they keep the movement of the two facing sites continuous. The two boxes on these slabs are the educational spaces and the residential spaces of the school. This vacant site has been a social intersection for the neighbourhood’s teenagers after their school time, to gather or to play. An important aspect of the design was to keep the teens social intersection and redesign a playground them.

Bachelor Thesis - “New Arts” School
Technology has a great impact on the ‘New Arts’. The “New Arts” school is an interactive building. The façade changes based on the exterior light and the interior events to interact with the city, by movable louvres and lighting. The interior walls of the school are designed as partitions that are flexible to be moved and define new spaces based on the needs. One side of these partitions have written theoretical information on them so that the students would learn more theoretical basis just by being in the school, and this could potentially bring discussion topics amongst students or make them curious about topics for further research.
Flexibility based on the need for space and use
Drawings and Renders
The floor plans are designed as islands mostly flexible spaces, each space would be a function that can expand into other spaces. The movable partitions are the information surfaces that students can read art theory and history texts on them. The presentation spaces and temporary exhibitions of the art classes are usually the in-between spaces.

Pistachio Processing Complex There are many types of pistachio processing complexes in Kerman province; it is where most of the country’s pistachio for export and domestic use comes from. This is a low budget mixed-use project. The terminal building for processing the pistachio is the main building. This building is usually connected to a big platform in order to dry the pistachios naturally; although drying is done with various machines, but sometimes this huge platform is also needed. There is the guard’s building next to the entrance for security purposes. Usually the security guard lives there for the whole year. The workers’ quarter is where workers can rest and have their lunch all together during the harvest time. The main dwelling is where the owner’s family or guests stay for one or two months a year during the harvest time, although it could be used as a place to stay through out the year. It is designed in a way that whilst the family have their privacy they can also keep an eye on the whole terminal complex without entering the workers area.
The Ideas and Model The site is divided into two sections, Living and Working. Working part is consisted of the terminal building, the guard’s house, worker’s quarters and the cement platform. On the other side the idea is to live in a “Utilitarian Paradise” in the desert.

The garden makes their stay more pleasant. Iranian Garden concepts were used to design this part of the site. Four passages separate the four quadrants. Most trees of the garden would have their harvest time overlapping with the time the owner stays in the complex, such as pomegranates and grapes, so their kids can play and have fresh fruit from the garden.
