Layout The plan is divided so that the different sections of the building are visually more independent from each other with a central courtyard to allow for light. The REI retailer is focused on the northern corner of the site with apartments above, while the rock climbing gym is located on the south west corner. On the east part of the site the mixed retail and student housing are located. The parking garage is centralized and surrounding by the other uses.

Day Lighting The building that was developed further with in the Niles Block was at the South East corner of the property, because of this precarious location day lighting needed to be addressed. On the East face of the building the colonnade provided sufficient shading for the first floor and the second and third floor is equipped with a determinant louver system that is suspended in front of the window glazing. The angle of the Louvers are done to prevent the low morning eastern sun from allowing glare. On the south side of the building the sun is blocked during the summer times with permanent overhangs over the windows which then also allow for winter sun to come in and warm the space during the winter months. The West side is also treated with the same louver system as the East face of the building.

Roxanna N. Torres-Colon I am interested in Architecture in the sense of finding solutions for social problems. I am not particular to a specific style but am inspired by a holistic form of architecture which responds to social, environmental, and economical constraints. I am particularly interested in urban design and making holistic places.
