B.L.A GRADUATE DESIGN WORK Dura6on: Feb 2014-Nov 2014 Loca6on: Christchurch New Zealand
CHRISTCHURCH NEW ZEALAND
SITE INTRODUCTION
Woolston South is a suburb located to the south-east of Christchurch city, approximately 3 km from the central business district . It has developed along Ferry Road and lower Heathcot River - Woolston Loop, serves as a residenEal, commercial and light industrial area. Its posiEon on the railway lines to LyFelton also has raised its importance. AHer the earthquakes, some of the industrial factories has been damaged as well as the community infrastructure, such as community library. With the change of the Tannery transforms from an industrial factory to a popular retail centre, it has started to posiEvely affects the surrounding land, communiEes, and neighborhoods. The Ferry Road Master Plan (stage one), planned by Christchurch City Council, also gives a clear indicaEon of the future development in Woolston Town Center. Therefore, with these range of opportuniEes in between the town centre and the Tannery, the Woolston South would retrofits the brownfield and flourish along side with Christchurch.

DESIGN STUDY REPORT
Spent half year doing site study, and came out with a 21-A3 page study report of Woolston South. I’ve done several site visits and had a deep understanding of the site. These aspects of the site had been studied: city scale context, neighborhood scale, site history and culture, community structure, land use, geology , hydrology, ecology and so on.

This proposal is aiming to reconnects between the town center and the mixed use area around the Tannery Mall. The development along side Woolston loop plus an important role to achieve this reconnec6on. Ac6vate the connec6ons by proposing a pedestrian walkway through exis6ng and proposed site aQrac6ons, providing a unique walking experience for local and visitors to read the story and characteris6c of the Woolston South. The proposal is developed along river side into 3 different design parts for housing, mixed use, and constructed wetland Part 2- Brownfield Retrofit into Mixed Use
Part 1- New Housing Development
90% of the buildings have been retrofiFed from old industrial buildings, using the old industrial building is a sustainable strategy to keep the idenEty of each site.
Higher density than L1 residenEal living zone. From previous study, this site had the highest value for new housing development, the reasons are as follows: close to town center, lower flood risk area, Heathcote river provides recreaEonal values.
Key programs - community center (4,800㎡) is proposed to accommodate all sorts of occasions. The building contains the industrial idenEty of Woolston South and is a great venue design to suit variety of events, for both community acEviEes to public events. - office & workshops ( about 30,00㎡) is proposed provide opportuniEes for business investment and job opportuniEes. Stylish affordable workshops would aFract arEst, designers and students. - affordable housing (about 16,00㎡) there are 12 units of housing been developed for students flats and studios for arEsts and small business family units. affordable housing would also help to set off gentrificaEon in this area.
New Housing Development
Proposed Houses: - 17 dwelling units/ha - accommodate 300 populaEon growth in 20 years
Part 3- Constructed Wetland Deten6on Basin is proposed to store the peak intensity of rains in the industrial area. Following the formula from Christchurch City Council ( Q=2.78CiA), the detenEon basin size is proposed to be 1ha, therefore, the average depth of the basins is 1.2m. This design concept would help reduce flooding risk, while starEng a new century for regeneraEon on an industrial land.

MASTER PLAN scale 1:1500@A1
This 1:500 scale design is strongly connect the river, mixed use area and the Tannery Mall through series of design interven6ons which evoke and celebrate the character and narra6ve of Woolston South. The design of mixed use area is oriented on the exisEng unused industrial buildings, which aims to keep the industrial building character of Woolston South. The proposed linear footpath bridge provides strong connecEon between the river, mixed use area and the Tannery. The bridge offers a safer pedestrian crossing, also create a different perspecEve of experience to the river and through out Woolston South. Storm Water Management Th first flush will be collected by drainage and overflow system, store by rain garden and then direct to the storm water channel. There are full collecEng and storage system throughout the whole design , the collected storm water will be filtrated through rain garden and wetland before discharge to the river. The 1 in 50 year storm, the rain garden will collect about 38 m³ of storm water with 85mm depth of water on site. Following the calculaEon formula from Christchurch City Council’s resource.

OVERALL STRATEGY
The overall design strategy of Woolston South area will be using the materials that evoke with the industrial idenEty and the linear characterisEcs of the Heathcote River. These proposed materials will reflects the industrial characterisEc of the local townscape and Woolston South. For example, the reddish color and texture of cortex steel release the characterisEc of the history from an industry area.
Concrete The fine texture with sense of man made material, its dense and cold expression creates a great contrast with fluent and soH texture.
Corten Steel The reddish brown color of cortex steel also evokes the beauty of industrial character. It is economical, long-lasEng and fully recyclable material.
Stainless Steel Best materials for handrails in public spaces. ConstrucEon material.
Treated Timber Clay-bricks Timber is the best material InspiraEon from the for searing and decking, exisEng factory building which provides soH warm facades. It creates a feeling. unique character of the site.

DIAMOND HARBOUR 4th YEAR STUDIO WORK Dura6on: Feb 2014-Apr 2014 Loca6on: Christchurch New Zealand
VISION
By 2014, LyFelton Harbour will become a more sustainable and self-sufficient area, supported by each community within this harbour. CommuniEes are connected together, and sustainably manage their land. Diamond Harbour will become a main community in southern bay with vibrant community center, which provide infrastructures for the local and visitors.
SITE INTRODUCTION
The Diamond Harbour community is one ‘with a capital C’. The community encompasses residents from Charteris Bay to Port Levy along the Banks Peninsula coastline, and assembles a diverse and dedicated populaEon of over 2000 residents. The earthquake experiences of 2010/11 brought to the fore the value of a resilient community. Recent earthquake resulted in the unfortunate destrucEon of Godley House, a focal point for Diamond Harbour community, which had been an important part for over 100 years.
GOALS
This project design starts from a 1:20000 scale conceptual strategic plan for the inner harbour that will compliment and enhance the new village center development in Diamond Harbour, to 1:1000 scale town center plan, down to 1:200 scale site level plan. It is to understand the site context, and to create a focal point for the public life of the community, where the layering of heritage, daily acEviEes, celebratory events, recreaEon and building infrastructure enhances the spaEal characterisEcs.
This harbour-wide strategic concept plan is to minimized land issues, explore the potenEal and land values and investment, reconnect communiEes together, revitalize the new village center development in Diamond Harbour. HARBOUR WIDE STRATEGIC PLAN scale 1:20000@A1
OBJECTIVES: Minimize sedimentaEon, providing sedimentaEon management plans.
Explore potenEal cultural values of land resources in a more sustainable way, make suggesEons for investment to recovery the economy.
Provide beFer public transport opEons to reconnect communiEes together within harbour, make the new village centre in Diamond Harbour more accessible.
Provide more social infrastructures to enhance the image of new village center in Diamond Harbour for visitors as well as locals.
