THE PROJECT Raw Ink Magazine grew out of the creative passions of myself and two journalist friends. We publish stories on creative events and people in the Gold Coast and Brisbane areas. In the short two years that we have been publishing, we’ve released over twenty four issues with over two thousand readers for each. We have interviewed creatives such as Ben Quilty, Katie Noonan, Yayoi Kusama, Blue Juice, Shida, The Medics, and Wes Carr, and had the privilege of covering events such as Woodford, The Surfer’s Paradise Festival and Splendour in the Grass. I was invited to speak about the magazine to 150 students at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE. MY PART IN THE PROJECT As well as being a founder of the publication, I work on all the branding, page layouts, social media and web graphics for the magazine. I have also been asked to be a guest speaker at the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE where I talked to 150 students about the magazine. INCLUDED –– Raw Ink covers (5) –– Article spread on Helle Jorgensen (6) –– Other spreads (7) –– Raw Ink website (8) –– The team: Liana, Ruth, Rebekah (illustrator) and me (8) –– Business cards, promotional poster and postcards (9) You can view it at www.rawinkmagazine.com

THE PROJECT Every year at the Queensland Collage of Art, the Typographic Design 2 class designs a handbook for the first year students. The handbook consists of information about the different courses, the campus and general information. This year, my design proposal was chosen as the handbook for the 2013 students. THE STRATEGY PROCESS My concept for the design was to use two colours, red and blue. The red is the same as Griffith’s logo and symbolises the university. The blue represents the students. The two colours combined, where the circles overlap, creates something new and different. This was a concept I felt would work well with Griffith’s philosophies. I made a few changes to my original concept to accommodate a reduced budget. After discussion with a number of printers, the size and shape of the book were changed to maximize paper usage and reduce costs. This project was a great learning experience in balancing delivering a quality product with budgets and deadlines, working on a large scale project and liaising with different departments of the university. INCLUDED –– The cover (19–20) –– The opening page (20) –– Degree requirements page (21) –– Degree options on the Gold Coast page (21)

THE COMPANY The Beach Shack is a snack bar opposite the beautiful Kingscliff Beach on the Far North Coast of New South Wales. Its fastest selling products include ice creams, fresh juice, milkshakes and coffee, whilst also providing soups, toasted sandwiches and wraps. THE STRATEGY The Beach Shack’s most profitable products are their fresh juices. To showcase this, I’ve used bright fruit colours and interesting shapes. I wanted to incorporate the beachside atmosphere into the design, without the obvious choices of blue, yellow, beach balls and shells. I wanted the branding to be fresh, colourful and fun. INCLUDED –– Styled photograph of packaging (23) –– Menu, business card and rewards card (24) –– Uniform (25) –– Photography to be used by the company (25) –– Website (26) –– Accompanying graphics (27)

S W E E T THE COMPANY Sweet on Buttons is a boutique, hand crafted jewellery business I founded in early 2013. Sweet on Buttons combines new and antique buttons, beads, cord and metal fastenings to produce unique, one off pieces. THE STRATEGY I designed the logo to be used over the top of a styled button photograph I took, with the text showing through to the image. This concept was taken across all media for the brand, with the text in the swing tags being laser cut. There were four ranges in the collection, with a different look and feel to each. INCLUDED –– Company logo (29) –– Styled product shots (30–31) –– Company stationery (32) –– Company’s web presence (33) –– Lookbooks (34) –– Lasercut paper swing tags (35)

C H A L K THE PROJECT This is a chalk typographic piece of a Matthew Carter quote “Type is a beautiful group of letters, not a group of beautiful letters.” It measures 1200mm x 900mm. THE STRATEGY “Type is beautiful group of letters” is hand drawn and illustrated, “Not a group of beautiful letters” is made up of the typefaces Baskerville and Bodoni. I wanted the look of the piece to reflect the meaning of the quote. The connected and flowing decorative type alludes to the idea of “typography” being a visually aesthetic group. The second half of the quote is very structured and formal, indicating the idea of the rigid, individual letters being the beautiful part. INCLUDED –– Close up of the first section of the piece (37) –– Photograph of the whole piece (38) –– First sketches of the hand draw type (39) –– Photograph of me working on the piece (39) –– Close up of the second section of the piece (39) Time-lapse video of the project: www.vimeo.com/73024364

THE PROJECT The Gold Coast Creative is a yearly publication showcasing the work of new graduates from the Bachelor of Digital Media and Honours degrees of the Queensland College of Art, on the Gold Coast campus of Griffith University. Another feature of the Gold Coast Creative journal is the promotion of innovative design and art practitioners as well as related creative businesses and enterprises found on the Gold Coast. MY ROLL IN THE PROJECT I was nominated to be a joint project manager in the 2013 edition of the publication. It was my duty to: –– Design the format for all of the student pages –– Organise the promotion of the publication to the students using posters, e-mails and Facebook updates –– Make it easier for students to participate. I did this by creating a simple four step guide on how to participate –– Liase with joint publishers Sanctuary Cove Publishing –– Liase with all participating students and collecting their content for the magazine. INCLUDED –– The 2013 Cover (41) –– Inside spreads, close-ups of the student’s details (42) –– Cover and spread details (43)

THE PROJECT This calendar is a gift designed for international guests of the Queensland College of Art. THE STRATEGY The calendar features 12 iconic locations, attractions and events on the Gold Coast. The front of each card has an image and a calendar, while the back gives information on what the image represents. It showcases the tourist attractions, nature and the lifestyle of the area. These are all unique aspects of the Gold Coast that would appeal to visitors. I used a soft, beach colour palette to reflect the colours of the Gold Coast. I have also applied a weathered effect, as the Gold Coast air is full of salt and weathers almost everything. The calendar itself is an interactive object – you can construct is as the tower, deconstruct it as the months go by or make it into a completely new object. INCLUDED –– Close up of the constructed calendar (49) –– The calendar packaged up (50) –– Beginning to construct the calendar (50) –– Close-up of all of the cards (50) –– Close-up of the constructed calendar (51) –– Shot of the fully constructed calendar (51)

D E X H I B I T I O N THE PROJECT In late 2012, I was invited by the Gold Coast Institute of TAFE to participate in Dexhibition. This was an exhibition featuring skateboard deck designs from Gold Coast artists, which were later auctioned for charity. THE STRATEGY I wanted to create a design with my favourite kinds of imagery. I produced a digital collage of photographs I had taken of buttons, flowers and animals to create a surreal and ‘pretty’ world. INCLUDED –– Styled shots of the deck (53–54) –– Photoshop working file (54) –– Photograph of the vinyl print (54) –– Close-up shot of the bottom of the deck (55) –– Photographs of the deck at the exhibition (55)
