GYMNASTIC LESSONS
Temporary Relocation of Gymnastics & Trampoline
Please be advised that due to the construction commencing for the new high school, the Small Massey Gym will no longer be available for our gymnastics and trampoline programs beyond August 2017. Despite our best efforts, we have been unable to find a suitable alternate location to house these programs. Limited programs will continue to be offered at the Vancouver Circus School as well as Motoring Munchkins at Centennial Community Centre. We look forward to offering our full comprehensive programs at the new interim facility which will open in Queen’s Park next year. Stay tuned for more details! For more information, please call 604.777.5121.

PHYSICAL What is physical literacy?
Physical literacy relates to the ability of an individual to demonstrate competence in movement within different environments. Competence is obtained by the development of fundamental movement skills and fundamental sport skills that permit a child to move confidently and with control, in a wide range of physical activity, rhythmic (dance) and sport situations. Physical literacy is the gateway to physical activity.
The NCCP Fundamental Movement Skills are: Throwing
Catching
Jumping
Striking
Running
Kicking
Agility, Balance & Coordination
Why is physical literacy important to my child? Childhood obesity and rising inactivity among children threatens the future health of Canada. Research shows that without physical literacy, many children and youth withdraw from physical activity and sport and turn to inactive or unhealthy choices with their leisure time. We also know that being physically active later in life depends on confidence in an activity setting, which is mostly developed from physical literacy and sport skills as a child.

LL I T E R A C Y How can I help my child become physically literate?
Parents face many challenges to get or keep their children physically active. However, providing opportunities for children and youth to develop physical literacy building blocks, through a variety of structured and unstructured activities in different environments (i.e. water, land, ice, etc.), is essential. Expose your children to a wide variety of physical activities, from swimming to dance to gymnastics, martial arts to team sports and more.
Programs Available: GYMNASTICS
Gymnastics is a foundation sport for all physical activity and sports. Early participation in gymnastics develops the most fundamental movement skills.
SWIMMING
Water confidence is a key part of the fundamental movement skills as swimming develops both locomotor and stability skills in children.
SKATING
Skating provides children with the opportunity to experience movement in a different environment while improving their agility, balance and coordination.

The Colonial Hotel was one of the earliest businesses in New Westminster; it was also a community meeting point. It hosted many prestigious dinners and guests. The Colonial Hotel ca. 1878. The crowds in front of the hotel and on its balconies are celebrating Dominion Day. Pons Arnaud’s name is listed above the name of the hotel. IHP0566
François (or Frank) and Prosper Grelley opened the hotel on Columbia Street in 1860. The new hotel boasted guest rooms, a restaurant, a well-stocked bar, private rooms for dining and a billiards saloon.

Detail of the Colonial Hotel during the “Callithumpian Procession” on Columbia in 1893. Callithumpian refers to a noisy riotous parade with the “blowing of tin horns and other discordant noises.” This building burned down in 1898. IHP8056-19
In the late 1860s, Pons Arnaud joined the brothers, working together with them until 1872. During this decade, Arnaud continued on his own. The hotel was now advertised as having hot and cold water baths. By 1876, the hotel opened in a new building, with a French chef and suites for 80 guests. Prices for rooms in 1880 ranged from 50 cents to one dollar, as did meals. In the 1880s, John Edward Insley took over. The Colonial burned down in 1883. The new building, on Columbia between McKenzie and Sixth, was designed by architect James Kennedy. It was advertised as a “first-class fire-proof building.” From this era in the hotel’s history, there is a surviving menu for an 1885 Feast of Saint Andrew dinner that had, among the offerings, sheep’s head broth, tongue, lobster salad, turkey with oyster sauce and champagne jelly. The hotel again burned down in 1898 during the great fire. After this fire, it was rebuilt as a wood building on Clarkson. This building lasted until about 1923.
