history

G

overnor James Douglas established New Westminster in 1859 as the capital of the colony of British Columbia. Queen Victoria named the new city in honour of the home of her own city’s Parliament, Westminster. New Westminster has often been called “The Royal City,” and its British heritage is still evident around the city. Some of the oldest buildings in the city include Irving House (1865) at 302 Royal Ave.; the Burr Block, which now houses the Met Hotel at 411 Columbia St. (1895); and the old St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church at 317 Carnarvon St., an example of the Carpenter Gothic Revival style of architecture (built in 1888/89).

The city has compiled several self-guided walking tours to help locals and visitors alike connect with the city’s past and present. Check out www.tinyurl.com/ NWWalkingTours2022 to find links. You can also stop in to the New Westminster Museum and Archives on the third floor of the Anvil Centre (777 Columbia St.) to find out more about the city’s rich and colourful past.

walkable city If you’re out and about in New West, you should take the time to visit some of the unique neighbourhoods that give the city its character and charm.

QUEEN’S PARK/UPTOWN If you’re a fan of heritage homes, you’ll want to take some time to wander the neighbourhood that’s located adjacent to the park of the same name. Wander the tree-lined streets in the area roughly bounded by First and Sixth streets and Royal and Sixth avenues to discover an array of architectural gems. Then wander your way over to what the locals call “Sixth and Sixth”: the neighbourhood surrounding the intersection of Sixth Avenue and Sixth Street (New Westminster tip: avenues run parallel to the river, streets run up from the river). This is where you’ll find Royal City Centre,

DOWNTOWN The historic downtown neighbourhood is centred on Columbia Street, where the discerning shopper will find fashion, flowers, furniture and more. At the heart of it all is the Anvil Centre, the conference and cultural centre at 777 Columbia St. that’s home to the New Westminster Museum, Anvil Theatre, New Media Gallery, Canadian Lacrosse Hall of Fame and more. Across the street is Hyack Square, home of the Wait For Me, Daddy sculpture, where you’ll find the pedestrian overpass to River Market. You can also find the Shops at New West, at New Westminster SkyTrain station, with an array of food, shops and services, plus Landmark Cinemas. And, of course, the whole neighbourhood is full of food – 10 DISCOVER NEW WESTMINSTER

with more than 40 shops and services. In the streets surrounding the mall, you’ll find an array of food and beverage options. For a summer treat, don’t miss some local faves: a maple twist cone and poutine at Anny’s Dairy Bar (722 Sixth St.), the blackberry sage ice cream at Rocky Point Ice Cream (100-500 Sixth Ave.); or, of course, some bubble tea – try Dakasi (406 Sixth St.) or Coco (500 Sixth Ave.). See www.myuptown.ca.

oh, so much food. If you’re in the mood for a more upscale evening out, Piva Modern Italian (787 Columbia St.) and El Santo (680 Columbia St.) are calling your name. If sandwiches are where it’s at, check out the offerings at the popular Big Star Sandwich Company (664 Columbia St.) or Gastronomia Italia (601 Columbia St.). For family fun, Pizzeria Ludica (601 Carnarvon St.) serves up board games with its plethora of pizzas. Whether you’re hankering for sushi, bubble tea, gelato or a night at the pub, downtown has you covered. Check out a whole list of offerings at www.downtownnewwest.ca.

SAPPERTON In the city’s east end, you’ll find the charming neighbourhood of Sapperton, named for the Sappers – the Corps of Royal Engineers – who carved out a British presence in the new colony of British Columbia. These days, you can find a little bit of everything in the quirky storefronts along East Columbia. The neighbourhood boasts a pair of arcades – Capital City (457 East Columbia) and Industry Arcade (30 Capilano Way) – and a brewery, Another Beer Co. at 11-30 Capilano Way, along with an array of food options. Want to eat like a local? Then you have to stop in for top-notch Mexican food at the Taco Factory (418 East Columbia St.), have brunch at Bruncheria (502 East Columbia St.) or marvel at the amazing creations at Yum Donuts (468 East Columbia St.). See www.shopsapperton.com for all the other options.
