GENERAL DON’T FORGET THE LITTLE GUYS!
LITTER BOX TRAINING Yes, bunnies can be trained to use a litter box. This makes having a house bunny much tidier and they’ll appreciate the chance to keep their living space clean. Choose a pine pellet litter or a recycled newspaper litter as other types are not safe for bunnies. Put the box near their food and water and they’ll get the hang of it soon enough!
BUNNY CARE TIPS
NUTRITION A nice mix of hay, vegetables, pellets, as well as fresh water will make your rabbit healthy and happy. The main part of a bunny’s diet should be fresh timothy, oat, or grass hay – all day, every day. You can supplement this with a small amount of bunny pellets and fresh veggies. Fruit is okay, but only as a special treat.
Most people visit New Westminster’s Animal Shelter looking to adopt a cat or dog. But we also have many wonderful bunnies for adoption. Bunnies can make great pets if you treat them like family and provide them with the proper care. If you are interested in adopting a bunny (or two!), visit the New Westminster Animal Shelter at: www.newwestshelter.petfinder.com.
HOUSING Bunnies can live free-roam in a bunny-proofed room or they can be contained within a puppy pen or a large cage. If a bunny is contained, their space should always be large enough so they can hop around and they should be let out of their pen for at least a few hours every day for exercise. Choose a quiet (but not isolated) area for your bunny. BUNNY-PROOFING YOUR HOME Rabbits need to chew to prevent their teeth from overgrowing. Don’t leave anything you don’t want chewed up within their reach and make sure to cover electrical wires to prevent injuries. ENRICHMENT Just like other pets, bunnies need stuff to do so they don’t get bored or destructive. Provide appropriate chewing toys, cardboard boxes to hide in and chew, and tunnels to run through. 82

My Home Town People develop strong attachments to the places where they live. There are many sentiments that deal with the idea of home: home sweet home, home is where the heart is, there is no place like home, and even home cooking, just to name a few. In some cases we may also consider the city where we were born or grew up to be home. Some people who have considered New Westminster to be their home have expressed their attachment to it in various ways. My Home Town is a song written in 1955, with words by John Booth and music by Ethel Louise Homer. The song was dedicated to the New Westminster Post of the Native Daughters of BC, whose love for their home town led to the establishment of its first museum, Irving House. Ethel Louise Homer, born in New Westminster in 1878, was an accompanist, pianist and teacher. John Booth made New Westminster his home in 1913. A landscape gardener, he landscaped the gardens for the approaches to the Pattullo Bridge Ethel Louise Homer ca. 1930. IHP1163
in 1938. When Irving House opened in 1950 he did the landscaping for the grounds there and also the grounds of the new City Hall when it opened 1953. Be sure to visit the New Westminster Museum’s exhibit that explores the concept of home when it opens on February 17, 2018.
