Located on the third floor of the Anvil Centre, the New Westminster Museum cares for over 36,000 objects that celebrate our city’s stories and history. Taking you on a journey from 10,000 years ago through today, our exhibits focus on the land, people and development of the place we call New Westminster. We aspire to be a fun and entertaining place of learning and use the objects in the museum’s collection as an entry-point to inquiry, discussion and exploration about the city.

GENERAL Dog Walking Etiquette USE A LEASH

Leash bylaws exist to keep your dog and others safe. Even well-behaved dogs can be tempted to leave their owner’s side (“Squirrel!”). Ideally, your dog’s leash should be short enough to keep them out of traffic and out of the way of others - 6 feet is a good rule of thumb. If your dog needs to feel the wind in their ears, there are 8 designated dog off-leash areas in New Westminster.

DO YOUR DOO DILIGENCE

If your dog does a “number 2”, you must do your “doo” diligence and clean it up. Always carry baggies to pick up the waste and dispose of it in a public trash can.

RESPECT OTHER PEOPLE

No matter how friendly your dog is, allow plenty of space when passing by joggers or other people out for a stroll. Some people are afraid of dogs or simply don’t like them. Some dogs get excited when a person runs by them and can jump up. If you allow a wide berth, the chances of a conflict are greatly reduced.

RESPECT OTHER DOGS

Not all dogs are happy to see their own kind while out on walks. If you come across another dog, and you notice that they seem to be anxious or uncomfortable with your dog’s presence, give them lots of space. Don’t allow your dog to approach another dog unless the owner says it’s okay. Watch their body language to make sure it’s a happy greeting on both sides.

BE AWARE

Resist the urge to use this time to check your phone. Be present during your walk with your pooch and you’ll both have a much more enjoyable time. Plus, if you’re aware of your surroundings, you’ll be able to avoid any potentially unpleasant encounters.

anonymous donor who sent them 500 fish in the early days, before refrigeration.

The Orphanage of the Good Shepherd in Sapperton (1890 1899) was the predecessor to the Roman Catholic Providence Orphanage on Twelfth Street. When the Sapperton orphanage burned down in October 1899, the Sisters of Charity of Providence stepped in to care for the orphans.

Over the years, there were additions like a laundry (when it became too onerous to wash everything by hand), an isolation hospital and a swimming pool. In 1913, a newspaper article reported that the BC Fire drill practice at Providence St.Genevieve Electric Company pro- on October 8, 1953. IHP9267-0423 vided free power for the washing machines, but the sisters had to pay for the electricity for ironing. In 1919, three girls and a boy died from the Spanish flu, while the whole staff was sick.

Mother Joseph of the Sacred Heart (1823-1902), then a woman in her late seventies, designed the building, with dormitories for the children, bedrooms for the nuns, washrooms, classrooms, a chapel, an auditorium, a kitchen and pantries. Sisters Irene, Wenceslas and Valentina moved in on July 17, 1901 with nineteen of their charges, before the building was completed. The school had the support of individuals in New Westminster, including an

Children came to the orphanage for a number of reasons. Sometimes only one parent was deceased and the other could not afford to keep the children. There were also cases where both parents were alive, but could not provide care, putting the children temporarily in the home. Older boys did the wood cutting and gardening, while older girls helped with the laundry.

In 1937, children were placed in foster care and the building became a boarding school called Providence St. Genevieve. The school closed on June 30, 1959 and the run-down building was demolished in 1960.
