Meditation (50+ years)

Meditation is centering, calming way of getting beyond the exhaustion of the racing mind. We learn how to get into a state of truth, consciousness, love, wholeness. We shift from the stressful fight or flight nervous system or sympathetic nervous system into the calming, intuitive, receiving parasympathetic nervous system. In this state, this is where healing in the body and mind can take place. We meditate in a non-judgmental, highly supportive environment-together. GENERAL

Wildlife in New Westminster We believe in peacefully co-existing with our urban wildlife, whether squirrels or coyotes. Larger animals, such as bears and cougars, are rare in New Westminster, but they can still travel through parts of our city occasionally.

Prevent Wildlife Conflicts

ELIMINATE FOOD SOURCES This is the number one rule to prevent unwanted wildlife from hanging around your home. Do not actively put out feed for wildlife, and also eliminate attractants like pet food and water dishes, fish ponds, spillage from bird feeders, fruit trees, uncovered compost bins, and unsecured garbage or food waste bins. PREVENT THEIR ENTRY It’s much more complicated to deal with wildlife if they’ve taken up residence than it is to stop them from coming inside at all. Carefully look at your home and outbuildings to ensure that there are no holes or gaps for wildlife to enter when they’re seeking shelter or a nesting place. Also be sure to block potential den areas such as under a deck.

“Nuisance” Wildlife

If you are dealing with wildlife on your property, such as raccoons in your attic or skunks under your shed, we advise that you visit spca.bc.ca to learn about the BC SPCA’s AnimalKind accreditation program. Please note that NWAS does not handle “nuisance” wildlife.

Injured Wildlife

We are glad to assist with injured wildlife when possible. If we are able to capture the injured wild animal, we will then transport them to a licensed wildlife rehabilitation centre.

Aggressive Wildlife

If you wish to report a wildlife-human interaction where public safety may be at risk, you can notify the BC Conservation Office’s Report All Poachers and Polluters (RAPP) hotline at 1.877.952.7277 (RAPP). Please call us if you have any questions regarding wildlife in New Westminster: 604.519.2008.

TIDY UP YOUR YARD Eliminate wildlife hiding places, such as wood piles, brush, and overgrown shrubbery. During the off-season, store patio furniture cushions inside so raccoons do not use them as a cozy bed. BE A PRESENCE If you see wildlife in your yard and you need to get by them, alert them to your presence by calling out or clapping your hands. Most wildlife will scurry away as they want nothing to do with humans. If they don’t move on, avoid inadvertently cornering them so they don’t feel the need to become defensive.

Opening of the Public (City) Market on Columbia Street, April 30, 1926. IHP3736

C ITY M ARKET

The New Westminster City Market (formerly 1051 Columbia Street) closed its doors in 1987. Thus ended an institution that had its beginning in 1892, when the first city-owned market opened on Front Street at Lytton Square. Over its history, the market served as a central place for Lower Fraser Valley farmers and other producers to sell their wares to consumers eager to buy them. After being destroyed in the Great Fire of 1898, the market was rebuilt on Front Street at the foot of Church Street near the original location. In May 1925, City Council began planning for a new concrete building. That August, however, a fire destroyed the existing market. As in the case after the 1898 fire, a temporary market was set up until the new building was completed.

Donato Bisceglia at his market stall, ca. 1978. IHP10001-1452

The City Market at Lytton Square, ca. 1897. IHP0098 The new market building on Columbia and Front streets (now the Army and Navy store) opened on April 30, 1926. It provided three stories or floors on the Front Street side. Ed Hoffman, a vendor at the city market who sold his fish there, remembered: “It was a busy place in those days one floor for livestock, one for groceries, and another for handicrafts.” Market days also offered opportunities for people to socialize. According to Hoffman, “the market itself was like one big family.” During the post-war boom, the city sold the building and property to the David Spencer department store. The market then moved east to its last location near Tenth Street and Columbia (now Columbia Square). It opened on August 22, 1947. After nearly 40 years, and despite pleas to keep it open, the city closed the market due to mounting operating losses.

Visit the New Westminster Museum for its new exhibition on community food security, on until October 20.
