cruitment for the department, took home $139,410 plus $750 in expenses in 2017. The department’s second-highest paid member, whose name was withheld for work-related concerns, made $212,506. Up until 2006, the City of New Westminster’s statement of financial information included members of the New Westminster Police Department. The department was excluded from the annual report over safety concerns for undercover officers, and because the Police Act supersedes the Financial Information Act, the city was able to make the change. New Westminster city council will be losing at least 29 years of experience following the fall election. While several incumbents are seeking re-election, Lorrie Williams and Bill Harper will be retiring from city council. “You look at your life and think, maybe it’s time. It’s been 16 years, five elections. When you think about that, you think that is a long time,”Williams told the Record. “There is some awfully good people in New Westminster. I don’t mind making room for them.” Williams said she’s proud of a number of accomplishments during her time on city council, including the installation of the Wait for Me Daddy war memorial in Hyack Square and the increase in child-care spaces in the city. While she’ll miss not seeing some outstanding initiatives completed, including construction of a new animal shelter, she’s looking forward to new endeavours. “It’s kind of nice to go out on a high,” she said. “I am healthy. I am so lucky. This is precious time now.” Williams said she’ll miss serving on city council but doesn’t plan to volunteer for civic committees for at least a year. Continued on page 3

Renovictions ‘scary’ for tenants
Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
More than 60 residents packed a meeting on a smoky summer Sunday afternoon to learn what they can do to tackle renovictions. The Vancouver Tenants Union distributed leaflets about its Aug. 19 meeting to tenants in several buildings it knew had been sold or had begun renoviction proceedings, but the group has since learned of other buildings being impacted by renovictions. “There were a lot of concerns,” said David Hendry, an organizer with the Vancouver Tenants’ Union. “After having a lot of discussion, I think most people are pretty interested, especially in those buildings, in trying to band together and trying to fight these. It was good.” According to Hendry, at least eight apartment buildings in New Westminster have been purchased this year, with tenants in some of those buildings having already received eviction notices. “It is scary for a lot of people,” he said. “There aren’t many options for them if they want to stay in the neighbourhood.” Hendry said the Vancouver Tenants Union plans to meet with tenants of other buildings in New West who are experiencing renovictions. “From there, I think what we need to do is try and set up meetings within those buildings and have those people start to strategize
HOUSING FIGHT: A member of the Vancouver Tenants Union talks Sunday to a group of New Westminster residents worried about being renovicted from their homes. PHOTO CHUNG CHOW about what to do,” he said of information sessions. “It is slightly different for each building sometimes.” The Vancouver Tenants Union advises tenants not to immediately move out or to sign anything if they get eviction notices. Because the “whole neighbourhood is experiencing this crisis,” it believes it’s time for residents to get to know their neighbours and help each other fight for what they need. “Our strategy is to try, without being alarmist, to let people know and get people understanding their rights before they start receiving eviction notices be-
cause when that happens people understandably get very panicked and scared, and start scrambling around for other housing,” Hendry said. “Sometimes the companies file eviction notices that don’t have very good grounds, and they basically try to get as many people out as possible, even when they don’t have a very good case for it.” While the Vancouver Tenants Union has provided the province with 50 policy changes it would like to see adopted and the City of New Westminster has lobbied for changes to the Residential Tenancy Act, Hen-
dry said it could take time before changes are introduced at the provincial level that prevent renovictions. “A big focus of the meeting was that we don’t know when these changes will be decided upon or when they will actually be put into place. It could be months, it could be even a year from now,” he said. “We were really strong about saying the number 1 line of defence is tenants organizing in their buildings. That’s the number 1 way that we can try to hold things off as long as we can for some of those policy changes to be put into effect. I think that’s our best bet.”

What the city is doing City of New Westminster says province must do more The City of New Westminster wants the province to take action to address the angst that arises when tenants are kicked out of their homes during renovictions. John Stark, the city’s acting manager of planning, said the city is aware of 10 buildings and 215 units where renoviction have occurred in New Westminster in the past three years. “There may be renovictions that the city is not aware of – renovictions done without permits and where no complaints were filed with the city – so this number is likely an underestimate,” he said in an email to the Record. “These numbers are based on renovictions where there is evidence that the renoviction has actually occurred (building permit issued, etc.). The numbers of potential future renovictions or rumoured threats of renovictions would likely be much higher.” The city has pursued a number of initiatives regarding renovictions, including distributing the Tenants Survival Guide to tenants, providing tenants with information about whether the property owner has the required permits or approvals in place for renovations, putting forward resolution to Union of B.C. Municipalities to take the incentive out of renovictions and flagging changes in ownership around rental buildings
and contacting tenants. “We did put a resolution to the Union of B.C. Municipalities specifically to take the incentive out of renovictions,” Stark said. “That would be, after renovations have occurred that tenants would be given first right of refusal at a rent that would be no more than what they previously had, plus any annual adjustments. We have been working with the province to deal with this.” If tenants have lived in buildings for 10 or 15 years, Stark said they could be paying rents that are $300 or $400 below market rents, as the annual allowable increases haven’t kept up. “For those individuals, if they are faced with having to relocate, it’s really difficult,” he told the Record after residents rallied against renovictions at a local apartment earlier this summer. “There are no units available at the rents they are currently paying. If they find a unit, sometimes they are having to make those difficult decisions as to food and other essentials. It is definitely an issue.” Stark said renovictions create “a lot of uncertainty and angst” for tenants, but it’s an issue that must be dealt with at the provincial level through the Residential Tenancy Act. “As a city, we cannot withhold a building permit. We have to process the building permit. It’s difficult. We don’t have that jurisdiction to withhold.”
Ex-mayor quashes rumour Tales of former mayor Wayne Wright’s return to the political arena are greatly exaggerated. Wright told the Record he’s fielded calls from locals asking him to run for mayor again, but he won’t be running. The Record has also been contacted by residents who’ve heard rumours Wright might run again. “It’s pretty easy for people to see me and say, ‘Come on back, we want you.’ It is very gratifying. It makes me feel good, but I am not prepared to do that,”Wright said. “That would be silly, but it’s still nice to hear.” Wright doesn’t think running for mayor is the right thing to do at this time – for himself or the city. “I have had my go. I want the city to keep going forward,” he said. “I think a good mix on council will take care of the situations that are coming up now.” With one term under his belt as mayor,Wright believes Mayor Jonathan Cote is poised to be a leader at Metro Vancouver, which is facing the retirements of a number of mayors in the region. With all seven members of city council currently endorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council,Wright said he thinks it would be good for the city if people from a variety of political backgrounds were elected. – Theresa McManus

Access was something that they were very happy with,” she said. “Our communications department does work with a lot of local businesses. We haven’t heard a lot of negative feedback about people not getting access quickly. It’s not something that we have heard from the community that is needed or is a shortcoming.” Other components of the New West Progressives economic platform include consulting with the business community to determine the feasibility of implementing an unoccupied business property tax to encourage landowners to lease out their priorities, rather than having them sit empty and unused for extended period of time. The group also wants to designate and better promote a portion of Columbia Street as Bridal Row.

The New West Progressives believe more work needs to be done to strengthen the local economy. The electors group recently released its economic platform, which includes commitments to support the development of a regional economic development strategy, to expand the number of business improvement areas in the city and to limit average business tax increases to no more than the rate of inflation through 2022. “We really believe the city can play an important role in helping to foster and facilitate economic growth,” said Bryn Ward, one of the New West Progressives council candidates. “However, the reality is entrepreneurs face a lengthy and complicated system if they want to set up shop in our city. This needs to change or we’ll continue to see high-
er-than-normal commercial vacancy rates in our city.” The Progressives would like to introduce a “one-staff interface” model that would have a single city staff person acting as a “navigator” to help with all the necessary permit and approval processes. “For businesses to have one person that is the ‘navigator’ at city hall, to guide them through the process, I think that would also eliminate a lot of time from one department to the next, trying to get answers and information,” said Ward, who said she’s personally experienced issues as a real estate agent trying to get information from city hall. Coun. Mary Trentadue said the city has been working toward a one-stop-shop kind of business model for all kinds of services that businesses and residents may need as part of the city hall renovation. “As far as business licences, we did a very in-depth survey of local business-

Crews working on the new high school, which is being built on the former site of the skate park next to Mercer Stadium, are connecting a new water main line to an existing line located under the Massey Theatre driveway, according to the district. The new line will travel from Sixth Street through the construction site to Massey Theatre. Dur-

Opinion OUR VIEW
Day of reckoning part of facing the ugly truth
To mark the suffering of the approximately 150,000 Indigenous children forced into residential schools, the federal government is planning a new statutory holiday. We support that plan – if it’s done right. After all, we take a solemn day every year to reflect on our war dead without letting Remembrance Day turn into a series of patio parties and mattress sales. Today, schoolchildren learn about the horror of residential schools. In the City of NorthVancouver, for example, the
municipal council discusses the 2,000 Squamish,TsleilWaututh and Sechelt Nation kids who were “aggressively assimilated” at St. Paul’s Indian Residential School. Things have definitely changed for the better, but a quick glance at the comments section of any news website or politician’s Facebook page makes it clear there are swaths of people who still just don’t get it – or who don’t want to get it. These are the same willfully ignorant blowhards who complain that the removal of a John A. Macdon-
Taking away his statue is so Indigenous people don’t have to face such an ugly reminder. ald statue fromVictoria’s city hall is erasing history. It’s true, John A. was our most important father of Confederation. He was also the father of a government policy to starve Indigenous people. To Indigenous people, he was the architect of a program that has destroyed generations of families.
The idea of taking away his statue is so Indigenous people don’t have to face such an ugly reminder whenever they walk into this particular government building. If you aren’t Indigenous, then you won’t understand the pain suffered by generations. So maybe try understanding that it’s not “PC
culture” but recognizing our country’s long history of terrible treatment of Indigenous people. Ironically, the controversy over removing the statue has done more to educate people than an artist’s bronze work ever could. Both the statue and holiday are only symbols, however, not a substitute for clean drinking water or infrastructure on reservations throughout the country. Canadians are often smug when they look at the U.S. and see that Flint, Michigan residents have been without clean drinking wa-
ter for a long time. But in Canada, there are an estimated 93 reserves that have not had drinkable water in many years, in some cases decades. Residents have to boil it first. Would you put up with that? If you aren’t Indigenous, would you even have to put up with that? Our national policy of unintentional and intentional abuse ruptured families and caused harm that can still be seen and felt today. That’s an ugly truth, but if we ever hope to achieve reconciliation, we all need to start with the truth.

B.C.’s budget is on razor’s edge The BC NDP will provide its first official update of government finances soon, and there are indications things are not as rosy as they appeared in the budget when it was tabled in February. While it is not likely to tip into a deficit, the bottom line may be perilously close to doing just that. The biggest area of concern for Finance Minister Carole James has to be the dramatic slowdown in the housing market. Some have theorized that what has driven B.C.’s impressive economic growth has been the red-hot real estate sector. It has become a $50-billion-a-year industry for economic activity and government revenue. The budget forecast revenues to government generated by the property transfer tax would increase by $100 million to more than $2.2 billion. And other areas of taxation – income and sales taxes – have also been boosted by spinoff activities from what has been a busy market. But the slump in the market will undoubtedly eat into those projected revenue estimates. Just how much the hit will be will not be known until next spring, but the government’s first quarterly financial report is a start. The Real Estate Board of GreaterVancouver recently released statistics that showed a whopping 30 per cent decline in home sales in the region when comparing July 2018 sales figures to the ones in July 2017.
And the July sales figures of this year were down almost 15 per cent from June, which suggests sales are continuously declining. If sales decline by 20 per cent over the course of the year, that could cost the government hundreds of millions of dollars in lost revenue. James’ budget is projecting a surplus of $219 million and has built in a cushion of $900 million in contingencies and a forecast allowance. But the costs incurred from fighting wildfires will likely take a big chunk of that, and any large slippage in property transfer taxes could consume the rest. The irony is James and her party promised to make housing prices more affordable and while they have started to fall, affordability is still nowhere in sight. Meanwhile, those increased housing taxes may threaten a balanced budget. SALUTE TO THE PNE I’d like to give a shoutout to the PNE. I worked 10 consecutive fairs as a teen and young adult. It remains a great employer of youth, who can make a tidy sum over the course of the fair just in time to head back to school. So even if there are some hazy spots on B.C.’s economic horizon, here’s hoping the annual fair does well and continues to be a traditional beacon of employment opportunities for young people (and older ones as well). City rants about those raves New Westminster council voted to ban raves within the city’s borders, after the publicity garnered by Vancouver considering making the all-night parties legal. Despite little notice to its being added late to the city meeting’s agenda, about 10 people in support of raves attended the public meeting. But a recent rash of problems, with four overdoses reported at one event in October, sparked council to act. A representative of the New Westminster Police Service said the police don’t support raves because of the availability of drugs at the parties and reported one death at a local rave earlier in the year.

Letters Vagabond Players should be applauded for service Editor: Just want to recognize such gifted and generous people in our community. Recently a group from KIDS Child Care were given an amazing experience by the Vagabond Players, including a tour of Bernie Legge Theatre. Upon arrival, the children were welcomed to view and touch props, including realistic boulders and a golden brown cooked turkey. In the dressing room and the costume storage area, we were shown period dresses, uniforms, hats, various wigs and plenty more. Trying a number of hats on sparked young imaginations. The antique RCMP jacket, jungle safari hat and the ghost dress were favourites. We viewed the furniture and prop storage area, as well as the workshop for building sets. Then it was back up to the stage for all the children to rehearse and perform a mini-play. Thank you, Vagabond Players and Bev Pride, for inspiring the children’s enthusiasm for live theatre. Jo-Anne McBean, New Westminster
Trains are noisy, but don’t forget about the racket from the SkyTrain Editor: I have been in New Westminster for 29 years, living about 200 metres from the SkyTrain tracks.
I read those articles over the many years about people complaining about the trains. I know how much noise there can be because I worked on an apartment tower being built by the tracks. But now the SkyTrain has had a big increase in noise level and it is more bothersome than the trains ever were. Tiemen Groenwold, New Westminster
No more strategic voting Editor: B.C. will soon hold a referendum to determine whether or not our government should implement proportional representation, or “pro rep.” It is very important that we all vote “yes.” There are many reasons to vote yes, but for me the most important one is climate change. It’s a hard subject to talk and think about. But it’s real, and it’s been here for a while, and it’s the reason I’m giving up meat and giving up having children and giving up vacationing on airplanes. I turn 30 this year – on our present course, I do not believe I will live to reach 50. And as the smog from wildfires once more engulfs our sky, I spend many of my nights attempting to make peace with death. I know the people of B.C. feel a great yearning to fight this thing – to fight for our children and for a habitable Earth. But because our current election system is broken, our yearning has only ever gone to waste. If we pass this referendum, we can finally dispense with all the useless “strategic voting” that hamstrings our every effort to conduct a successful democracy. We can finally join together and vote for the change we want. Brendan Vance

City ELECTIONS
Labour council to endorse full slates Last election, group endorsed all council members, but only five school trustees Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
The New Westminster and District Labour Council expects to endorse a full slate of candidates for New Westminster’s city council and school board. Prior to each civic election, the labour council endorses candidates vying for mayor, councillor and school trustee in 14 communities in the region. Four years ago, the organization endorsed one mayoral, six councillor and five trustee candidates in New Westminster. “For New Westminster, it is our intention to endorse full slates for both,” said Janet Andrews, secretary-treasurer of New Westminster and District Labour Council. In June, the labour council selected some of the local candidates it will be endorsing in the Oct. 20 municipal election. It will be voting on the remaining candidates to be endorsed this week. “We have 14 member municipalities in our region. You can imagine it’s a lot to get through,” Andrews said of the endorsement process. “We did a vote in June on
June 27.” Although the labour council will inform candidates whether they’re being endorsed at the conclusion of its internal process, Andrews said it won’t be releasing the information publicly until nominations close on Sept. 15. She said there have been cases where people may change their minds and the labour council doesn’t want to be left with an inaccurate list of candidates.
IT’S YOUR RIGHT IT’S YOUR RESPONSIBILITY
Candidates, however, are permitted to say whether they’ve received the NWDLC’s endorsements. To date, incumbent mayor Jonathan Cote, incumbent councillors Patrick Johnstone and Mary Trentadue and first-time candidate Chinu Das have confirmed to the Record that they’ve been en-
dorsed by the New Westminster and District Labour Council. In the 2014 civic election, labour council-endorsed candidates in New Westminster swept city hall, taking all six councillor positions and the mayor’s seat, as well as five of seven spots on the school board. People who want an endorsement must complete an application and go through an in-person interview. A recommendation then goes to the labour council’s delegates, representing a variety of unions in the region, who vote on the candidates. Andrews said the labour council endorses people it thinks are going to be really strong representatives, are progressive, share its values and will build a strong community. “We feel very strongly the people we endorse share our values for one thing, which is important to our members and our organizations, our affiliates, and we think they will do a really great job for New Westminster and the community and the people there,” she said.

Mayor conducts online survey Mayor Jonathan Cote is seeking input from residents and businesses on topics like housing, transportation, public amenities and the local economy. As part of the incumbent mayoral candidate’s re-election campaign, he’s launched a survey on his election website – www.votecote.ca. The survey is open until Aug. 31. “New Westminster is a diverse community and I want my platform to reflect that diversity,” Cote said in a press release. “The more leaders involve citizens in the processes that shape our shared future, the more that future is reflective of everyone’s needs.” As part of his re-election campaign, Cote is also meeting with residents this month through “walk-and-talks” on Aug. 25 and 26, when he will walk through “iconic neighbourhoods.” Save these dates ! New West is already working on an economic strategy: councillor Continued from page 6 “When it comes to Bridal Row, our attitude is to embrace it and make it an ever greater destination for brides and grooms, as well as young graduates,”Ward said. “There is a great opportunity to use the high concentration of bridal shops to help attract even more related stores, cafés and unique restaurants.” Trentadue, a member of the city’s economic development advisory committee, believes businesses would be “very smart” to locate near the bridal shops in downtown New West. While the city is open to all kinds of businesses that are interested in setting up in the city, she said landlords and leasing agents are responsibile for deciding what businesses open in their spaces. The City of New Westminster has nearly completed work on a new economic development strategy, she said. “A lot of the things in the strategy are around engagement – they are around making sure it is easy for businesses to set up when they choose to.The other thing that is important for New West is to be a really good promoter of our-

Environmental Assessment of the Proposed Pattullo Bridge Replacement Project
Open House and Invitation to Comment The Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure (MOTI) proposes to replace the existing Pattullo Bridge (proposed Project) with a new four-lane bridge spanning the Fraser River just north and upstream of the existing bridge and, similar to the existing bridge, its approaches will connect to McBride Boulevard in New Westminster and King George Boulevard in Surrey, British Columbia. Once the new bridge is constructed and operational, the existing bridge will be decommissioned. The proposed Project is subject to review under British Columbia’s Environmental Assessment Act and under section 67 of the Canadian Environmental Assessment Act, 2012. BC’s Environmental Assessment Office (EAO) and the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority have agreed to a coordinated provincial-federal environmental assessment process for the proposed project.
There are 33 days for the submission of comments by the public in relation to the Application. The public comment period will begin on September 6, 2018 and end on October 9, 2018. The intention of seeking public comments is to ensure that all potential effects – environmental, economic, social, heritage and health – that might result from the proposed Project are identified for consideration as part of the assessment process. This feedback will also be considered as part of the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority’s Project and Environmental Review process. All comments received during this comment period will be considered. Community Please silence your kids – nobody wants their noise Mommy’s GROUNDED Bianca Bujan
Picture this dream scenario: My family of five is sitting and waiting in the stuffy, crowded lobby of our local family restaurant. We are impatient. We are hangry. Suddenly, my youngest begins to scream. She wants to sit on the same side of me as her old-
er brother, and his refusal to move at her command causes the onslaught of what many parents dread in a public place – a full-blooded temper tantrum. Embarrassed, I pick her up under my arm and dash out the door as quickly as I can. My husband and I have a mutual understanding that with the first squeal, or scream, we grab our fussy child and get them the heck out!
Zone Supervisor The New Westminster Record is looking for an energetic and customer friendly individual for our Distribution Department. The right candidate must have excellent communication and organizational skills, attention to detail, the ability to work with minimum supervision, and basic knowledge of MS Word, Excel and email. Duties include supervising 100+ youth carriers, recruiting new carriers, surveying old and new delivery areas, monitoring carrier performance, and following up on householder delivery concerns. A reliable vehicle is a must. A vulnerable sector criminal record check is also mandatory. Must have reliable vehicle. This part-time position offers a flexible 20 hours per week. Please forward your resumé to: New Westminster Record 3355 Grandview Hwy Vancouver, BC V5M 1Z5 Or email it to mblack@van.net NO PHONE CALLS PLEASE
Some parents, on the other hand, choose to respond in a different way. A story recently shared on the TODAY Parents website has sparked a two-sided debate about kids and noise, and it’s one that may have you wanting to plug your ears. The post – titled, “I’ll never apologize for my noisy kids, and parents, you shouldn’t either” – shares one mom’s perspective on how she manages the noise volume of her three young kids.
When making friends is the goal, everyone wins. With over 275,000 kids playing Timbits Soccer every season, Tim Hortons Restaurant Owners are proudly helping communities come together across Canada one game at a time. Timbits Soccer, where the first goal is having fun.TM

views that allowing her children to make all the noise they want may be a sign of disrespect in public places, she rebuts: “There is absolutely nothing disrespectful about love.” Wouldn’t it be nice if everyone could shout out every emotion that they’re feeling, at any volume and in any place they please? No, it wouldn’t. Most of us have learned there’s a time and place for certain behaviours, and I strive to teach my children the same.
When we visit a library, a restaurant, or a retail store where lower volumes are expected, my children should not act in the same way as they would in an outdoor playground or in their own backyard. In public places, inside voices are simply mandatory for this mom. Perhaps you’ll never apologize for your noisy kids, but I sure will. Bianca Bujan is a mom of three, writer and editor. Workshops for volunteers and service providers who work with seniors
This is one in a series of workshops by the Allies in Aging Volunteer Impact Team. Our goal is to reduce social isolation among seniors in Metro Vancouver.
In short, she doesn’t. The author explains, “You are hearing noise because children are meant to be heard. All of their noise – their happy noises, their curious noises and their range of noises that express the gamut of emotions they feel daily.” She shares that her children are free to make all the noise they please, “be it inside of our home or when we visit yours. Out at a grocery store or inside a restaurant.” In response to opposing

Landscape architect will share stories about its development in Faces of the Fraser speaker series Theresa McManus AROUND TOWN
tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca
Landscape architect Bruce Hemstock will be sharing stories about the development ofWestminster Pier Park at this weekend’s Faces of the Fraser speaker program at the Fraser River Discovery Centre. Hemstock, a partner with PWL Partnership Landscape Architects, was the partner in charge of the design and implementation ofWestminster Pier Park, which opened on New Westminster’s waterfront in 2012. He’s proud of the fact that the park’s design draws inspiration from the historical, cultural, and ecological influences of the Fraser River and recognizes the strong ties the city and its residents have had with the river over the years. “The Pier Park has been a fantastic addition to the waterfront, so we are very excited to have Bruce join us to talk about it as part of Faces of the Fraser,” said Discovery Centre executive director Stephen Bruyneel. “With all the different interests in the Fraser River, it wasn’t easy to plan and develop the park, so we look forward to hearing how he was able to do just that.” Hemstock will speak about the development of Pier Park on Saturday, Aug. 25 at 1 p.m. at Fraser River Discovery Centre, 788 Quayside Dr. The event is free with admission to the centre, but a limited number of seats are available, so pre-register at www.fraserriverdiscovery. org/FOTF/Upcoming or 604-521-8401. More information on the Faces of the Fraser series can be found at www.fraser riverdiscovery.org. CELEBRATING SENIORS HOUSING A local residence that’s provided housing to hundreds of seniors is celebrating a milestone. Connaught HeightsVilla is celebrating its 50th anniversary with an on-site barbecue on Saturday, Aug. 25. Jonas Jonsson, chair of the Villa board, invites all present and past residents and administrators to drop by the barbecue from 2 to 4 p.m. “Fifty years ago, there were no low-income apart-
ments for seniors,” said a press release from Connaught HeightsVilla. “The Connaught HeightsVilla was sponsored by the Connaught Heights Pentecostal Church, and built un-
der the auspices of the B.C. Government and Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, as a nonprofit, low-income seniors’ building.” Continued on page 19

Special Numbing Cream Relieves Years of Arthritis Pain Without Pills or Needles
New cream relieves arthritis pain in minutes after applying; uses the strongest approved dose of an anesthetic which numbs the nerves that trigger intense joint pain By David Watson Associated Health Press TORONTO – Expectations are high for a new blockbuster arthritis pain reliever. But unlike so many of the others, it comes in the form of cream, not a pill. Initial users say the relief is extraordinary and when you look at the science you’ll see why. The new pain relief cream numbs the nerves right below the skin. When applied to an arthritic joint, or a painful area on the body, it delivers rapid relief that lasts for hours and hours.
Blocks Pain Wherever It Hurts The powerful painkilling effect is created by the cream’s active ingredient, a powerful anesthetic. Anesthetics are highly regarded by physicians in the medical community. They block nerve signals specifically so that patients don’t feel pain and are incredibly effective. “Those suffering with arthritis or joint pain can expect relief within minutes of their first application,” explains Dr. Henry Esber, creator of the hot selling topical Apeaz.
“There will be a pleasant warming sensation that is followed by a cool, soothing one. This is how you know that the anesthetic and the active ingredients has reached the affected joint and tissue.”
Works In Minutes For sufferers of arthritis pain, Apeaz offers impressive advantages over traditional medications. The most remarkable is how quickly it relieves arthritis and joint pain. The cream contains the maximum approved OTC dose of an amazing anesthetic, which rapidly penetrates the skin to numb the area that’s hurting. This relief lasts for several hours.
fraction of the cost. At less than $2 a day, the cream is quickly becoming a household name.
Rapid Relief Without Pills or Needle Injections ManyApeazusersreportsignificantimprovements in daily aches and pain. Many others also report increased flexibility, less stiffness, and decreased muscle soreness. They are moving with less pain for the first time in years. “I’ve tried more pills than I can count. I’ve also had a handful of cortisone shots. Nothing is as effective as this product. With Apeaz, I get relief right away. I rub a little on my hands. It keeps the pain away. It also prevents the pain from getting really bad. It’s completely changed my life,” raves one user. Apeaz™ is a Natural Health Product approved by Health Canada for the following conditions:: • Temporary pain • Simple back pain • Strains • Sprains • Athletic injuries • Muscle stiffness and pain • Wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle, foot, muscle or joint pain
The New Science Behind Arthritis Pain Relief When applied to the skin Apeaz is absorbed in just minutes. It then penetrates through muscle and tissues, getting to the source of you pain, numbing the nerve endings. “This is why Apeaz is so effective for people with arthritis pain. It reduces pain while adding an additional potential layer of joint support,” explains Esber.
Highly Effective, According to Researchers
Published pre-clinical animal studies have shown that the other ingredients in Apeaz can also prevent further bone and cartilage destruction.
A pre-clinical trial on Apeaz was carried out by Dr. Esber and his research staff shortly after its initial production.
No Risk of Ulcers or Stomach Pain
The results were published in in the Journal of Immunology.
There are also no negative side effects as seen with pills. Apeaz delivers its ingredients through the skin. Oral medications are absorbed in the digestive tract. Over time, the chemicals in pills can tear the delicate lining of the stomach, causing ulcers and bleeding.
The study found that Apeaz induced an instant numbing effect, which blocked pain for several hours.
A Low Cost Alternative That Works There are also tremendous savings when switching over to a topical like Apeaz. When compared to other arthritis medications, Apeaz is a
It also decreasing swelling and inflammation around joints.
Amazing Long Term Results Even more remarkable, in the same study Apeaz was also shown to prevent the further destruction of cartilage, a major cause of arthritis.
NEW ARTHRITIS PAIN RELIEVER WORKS ON CONTACT
Apeaz delivers its active ingredient, a powerful painkiller, through the skin, providing users with rapid relief without side effects
“One of the most impressive things about the study was the various ways Apeaz was able to influence levels of pain. Many painkillers, and even creams, simply mask your pain. Apeaz is different. Since it is absorbed through the skin it deliver rapid relief and is able to deliver its ingredients directly to infected arthritic tissue” explains Esber.
A New Weapon for Arthritis and Joint Pain With daily use, Apeaz helps users live a more vital, pain free relief without any of the negative side effects or interactions associated with oral drugs. Through the use of a powerful anesthetic, Apeaz is able to numb pain at the source, specifically around joints plagued by arthritis. Readers can now enjoy an entirely new level of comfort that’s both safe and affordable. It is also extremely effective, especially if nothing else has worked.

Park connects to history
Archie and Dale Miller
editorial@newwestrecord.ca
Many of you will know of Sapperton Landing Park – located beside the Fraser River below the Fraserview area – as you drive or walk along East Columbia Street in New Westminster. This is a great park from which to see the river, watch vessels of many types sail past, note wildlife of the area and experience the differences season after season. It is also a great spot to remember the many local historical links, including the Columbia detachment of Royal Engineers and their camp, the early Government House, B.C. Penitentiary, early railroads and streetcars, royal visits and so on. And now this site, which has been part of many of our presentations and walking tours over the years, is moving ahead towards a new phase of development that will add another place from which to enjoy more of the river and the local
history. You will likely have noted that a major construction project has been ongoing for some time upriver from Sapperton Landing Park. The project is the construction of Metro Vancouver’s new Sapperton wastewater pump station. The website for this project shows that, along with the pumping station, the site will also include a new recreation area from which to look out over the river and, according to a diagram of the proposed layout, will tentatively be known as “Cumberland Point.” There is much more to this project, so have a look at www.metrovancouver. org – search for Sapperton Pump Station. The new riverside recreational location, which will now offer access to both sides of the mouth of the Brunette River, will also supply additional opportunities to link more sites and views to the heritage and history of this particular area.
Women of New West
Women in Leadership
The area was home to the Brunette Sawmill for many years, during which this mill was a prominent landmark. Along the waterfront upriver from here were many other industries well known to those near the river. This is also the location of some dramatic photos showing ships of sail loading lumber for destinations around the world. The entrance channel of the Brunette River itself has a connection to sternwheel steamboats as it was sometimes used as a place in which to secure a paddlewheeler during winter to protect the vessel from crushing effects of river ice. It is also important to note that the local First Nations knew the waters of the Brunette as well as those of the Fraser and would have used the Brunette River to travel inland from the main river and for shelter. This Sapperton pump station project is going to add some interesting historical connections to the already popular park.

Schuss picks up bounty There’s no substitute for ending the season on a winning note, but a couple of New Westminster Salmonbellies did earn their share of hardware with the unveiling of the Western Lacrosse Association’s 2018 award winners. New West’s Logan Schuss and Mike Messenger were named last week as the Commission Trophy and Gordon C. Nicholson Memorial Award recipients on the heels of solid seasons. Schuss, who also picked up the Denny Huddleston Memorial Award as the league’s leading scorer as well as the circuit’s Three Star Award, was voted the Commission winner in a vote of the board of governors. The 27-year-old forward established careerbests with 37 goals and 69 assists over 17 regular season contests, doubling his point production of a year ago. The Commission Trophy, first presented in 1958, is handed to the league’s Most Valuable Player. Messenger, meanwhile, played in only 11 regular season games due to a long playoff run with the National Lacrosse League’s Saskatchewan Rush. He tallied three goals and six assists. The Nicholson award is given to the player who demonstrates outstanding defensive skills while possessing leadership qualities on and off the floor. Both Schuss and Messenger were named to the WLA’s first all-star team, joining goaltender Frank Scigliano and forward Curtis Dickson, both of Maple Ridge,Victoria’s Casey Jackson and Nanaimo’s Drew Belgrave. New West netminder Alexis Buque, who posted a league-best nine wins this past season, was voted to the league’s second all-star team.

dolson@newwestrecord.ca
They know their future, but the Douglas College women’s Royals soccer team want to cinch their destiny. The squad enters the 2018 PacWest League season with a big red circle on their calendar as hosts and participants at the Canadian Collegiate Athletic Association’s championship in November. All the stressing and hand-wringing that goes with battling for a berth can be cast aside – or at least converted into something more organic – as the Royals hone in on building a challenger for a national crown. After last year’s PacWest league title and a fifthplace finish at the nationals, knowledge and experience will be major assets as the squad kicks off the regular season Sept. 8 against Langara at Coquitlam Town Centre Park. “Our focus is to find a rhythm, find who plays well together, what formations we can throw out there and give players minutes,” remarked head coach Chris Laxton on Tuesday. “Most important, give players rest so we don’t need to put them through the grind of 12 games in seven weeks. We can hopefully give them time to rest and be ready in time for November.” Knowing you’ll be playing Nov. 7 to 10 with the rest of Canada’s best teams eases some of the early details every club faces to launch a season. But it doesn’t inoculate them from doing all the hard work and checking off the necessary items when it comes to marking a successful year. Laxton considers the offseason work, primarily recruiting and player retention, as big pluses.

BEST FOOT FORWARD: Douglas College Royals’ captain and PacWest 2017 leading scorer Sam Kell pushes the ball forward last season. The club enters the new season knowing they’ll qualify for the Canadian national championships, as hosts, with the aim of ending the season on a winning note. PHOTO PACWEST
Douglas’ main losses were key contributors – five-year veteran Michelle Wessa and third-year Jasdeep Gill, both anchors at midfield – but the leadership mantle remains with captain Samantha Kell, who led the PacWest in scoring with eight goals in 11 games, forward Mikayla Hamilton and midfielder Andrea Perrotta. A Coquitlam native, Perrotta was the league’s top scorer in 2016 as a rookie and is expected to be a major contributor after missing all of 2017 due to injury. The backline as a whole is intact and one of the reasons Laxton feels confident that they can convert on last year’s promise, which saw them capture the league crown in penalty kicks over
archrival Capilano. Returnees like Burnaby’s Ashley Bristow, Surrey’s Sonali Dholliwar and Coquitlam’s Alyssa Lum are part of a deep defence that works in tandem with goalkeepers Alexa Gazzola and
It’s going to be me putting my ego in check ... Nicole Scott to keep the ball at bay. “Our backline is strong and they’re just trying to click together in pre-season. Hopefully we’ll see more from there. Our attacking group, with Mikaela and

Andy the last two (league) MVPs, will add a spark going forward,” he said. When it comes to new additions, the team stocked up at every position, including Burnaby midfielder Mikaela Montagano, Surrey forward Sofia Flores-Aguilera, Ladner centre back Hannah dela Cruz, and midfielder Emma Thomas of PoCo. “They’re going to make an impact in their first year, especially with the minutes we’re able to throw around knowing our end date and we know we’re going to play in November,” said Laxton of his eight additions. The pre-season results haven’t been all negative, despite the losses to Simon Fraser University and a pre-
mier youth squad. Air quality squashed a planned exhibition test in Bellingham on Tuesday, and hopefully won’t scrub games planned in Kamloops this week. Building for November won’t mean easing into September. Last year’s 1-1-1 start isn’t something they look to emulate, but knowing they’ve got plans in November doesn’t erase the pressure. It’s just now more internally, and will give them a concise blueprint to follow and improve on during the coming months. “It’s going to be me putting my ego in check and making sure we’re doing the right things instead of chasing things we don’t necessarily need,” said Laxton. Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid, broken into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve a Sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill each row, column and box. Each number can appear only once in each row, column and box. You can figure out the order in which the numbers will appear by using the numeric clues already provided in the boxes.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE WINNERS!
Welcome to the 19th Annual Readers’ Choice Awards, it’s one of our highlights each and every year at The Record. As you may recall, we published ballots during the month of May and offered a $750 shopping spree at Royal City Centre as an incentive for you, the loyal reader, to cast your votes for the best in New West in 120 business categories. While our contest does not qualify as a scientific survey, the level of participation definitely lends credibility to the outcome as do our strict rules on how we count and qualify every ballot. Each ballot must contain a minimum of 25 businesses voted upon, only one ballot is accepted per individual, and only original ballots cut out of the newspaper or entered online were counted. All other entries were disqualified. I want to offer my sincere congratulations to the businesses who received this year’s Readers’ Choice
Award. They are all deserving of our recognition as The Best in New West. But please don’t just take our word for it; visit as many of the winning businesses listed in this special feature and decide for yourself. The Record would like to congratulate this year’s winner of the Royal City Centre Shopping Spree, Matt Green, We also sincerely thank all of your who participated and entered this year’s contest and we look forward to counting your votes next year.

QUEEN’S PARK DENTAL Best Dental Clinic
The award-winning Queen’s Park Dental has earned a reputation for its unwavering dedication to its patients. This simple, yet leading concept, has been one of the guiding principles here for nine years. Founded by Dr. Darcy Murphy, he and his team offer a comprehensive range of dental services in an environment that is relaxed and inviting. “I have a laid-back management style and try to keep a happy and comfortable atmosphere here for my team and our patients,” he notes. “I feel that if my team is happy we can all provide the best care to our patients.” His clinic specializes in a wide range of services and the most up-to-date advancements in general dentistry, including dental implants, dental veneers, sealants, as well as teeth whitening and more. In keeping with its ethos of providing cutting edge technology, a few years ago Dr. Murphy introduced a New Gum procedure, Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). This scalpel-free, suture-free procedure is used to correct gum recession. “It is an excellent alternative to traditional grafting techniques, and much more comfortable for the patient,” he explains. Dr. Murphy comes with exceptional credentials. The highly skilled professional graduated in 2003 with his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from the well-respected Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia. While at Dalhousie, he was elected Class President, President of the Dental Society and Class Valedictorian. In addition, Dr. Murphy was accepted into a one-year Dentistry General Practice Residency (GPR) at the University of Alberta Hospital in Edmonton. After that, he went on to practice in New Westminster for a few years prior to purchasing Queens Park Dental from Dr. Lyle Agar. “I see myself as a lifelong learner and endeavour to provide top notch care by participating in continuing education to learn the latest techniques,” he adds. Besides its state-of-the-art dentistry, Queen’s Park Dental is a practice with “Heart.” Dr. Murphy regularly donates to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation and has established a yearly scholarship to a graduating student at New Westminster Secondary. It doesn’t stop there. Dr. Murphy personally takes time out of his busy practice to volunteer at the British Columbia Coroners Service (BCCS) as a Forensic Odontologist. “My team also donates a day to ring the bells for the Salvation Army at Christmas,” he says. Your smile is the first thing people notice – let Queen’s Park Dental. make it the best ever!

Everyone has a vision of how they want their life to be – but do you ever visualize good health for yourself and your family? In New Westminster, award-winning Royal City Health & Manual Therapy Inc. is your one-stop wellness centre for skilled massage therapy, physiotherapy, dietetics, and clinical counselling. Founded in 1995 by Registered Massage Therapists (RMT) and partners in life and business, Jeanie Bezdan and Rick Tkach. Their wellness centre offers exceptional service along with personalized care, a holistic healing environment, and the latest techniques and treatments in the field of alternative medicine. It’s no surprise the clinic has garnered several accolades, including Best Business of 2017, Three Best Rated Physios and New West Record’s A List for Favorite Physio. Both credit their success to their great front-end staff and practitioners, a team of talented, professional and friendly people who have helped to create a positive, welcoming environment for their clientele. “Our location, our atmosphere, and service have also helped make us successful,” says Jeanie, adding they have patients whose whole families attend. “It really is about giving clients the start they need to get on the road to physical health, so they can return to the life they enjoy.” Royal City Health & Manual Therapy Inc. also provides its clients with state-of-the-art technology, including its new Shockwave machine, which helps resolve chronic conditions. Also new is the Student Intern Clinic on Saturdays, offering professional treatments for $30.00, as well as a massage therapy graduate intern. “Our massage therapy interns offer treatments for a reduced fee,” explains Jeanie. “These new services help make treatments more affordable for those without extended medical insurance.” Both Jeanie and Rick come with a wealth of experience and education. Jeanie received her degree in communications from Simon Fraser University (SFU) with a minor in kinesiology. She then went on to graduate from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1995. Rick completed three years in Kinesiology at SFU before graduating from the West Coast College of Massage Therapy in 1988. “Together, we have over 50 years of combined experience,” says Jeanie. “We have a lot of experience running a clinic, but we still have a lot to learn. We remain open minded, approachable, interested in and encourage ideas from staff.” Philanthropy is also important to the couple. The team regularly raises funds for local non-profits, such as the Food Bank, Children’s Hospital, Variety Club, and Empty Stocking Fund.

DONALD’S MARKET
Thank you New Westminster residents for this honour! Along with my wife Alix and our three daughters, I am proud to call New Westminster home— and since I began serving on City Council in 2005 I’ve been grateful to be part of making our city a great place to live, work and play. My three terms on Council and the past four years serving as Mayor have been a time of tremendous change and opportunity here. Thanks again to your support, here’s some of what we’ve been able to accomplish in the past decade: • Moody Park Outdoor Pool & Youth Centre • Westminster Pier Park • Front Street Mews & Ewen Avenue Streetscape Program • Redevelopment of Sapperton & Quayside Park Livability also means being able to afford where you live. To that end we can all be proud of New Westminster’s efforts: we’ve permitted laneway housing, created a new rental housing program that so far has seen 1,000 new rental units, we’ve protected existing rental buildings, and started the Rent Bank. We’ve also launched small-lot affordable housing projects in downtown New Westminster and Queensborough. The mayoral election is coming up in October, so please get out and vote! I’m excited to continue working with all of New Westminster’s citizens to keep up the momentum we’ve built together. And if you ever have questions for me, feel free to send me an email at: jonathan@votecote.ca
In order to keep your car running at its best, it’s important to keep up with routine maintenance and inspections. By properly maintaining your vehicle, you’ll reduce future repair costs, optimize your car’s performance, maintain its value and extend its life. In New Westminster, residents have trusted in Hyack Excel Tire to do just that since 1991. At the helm of this award-winning automotive shop is owner/general manager David Klassen, who received his industry education at BCIT and comes with more than 25 years of experience. Prior to purchasing the popular auto shop in September 2012, David worked as its head technician for 14 years. He is extremely proud of his team of highly skilled trained professionals, who on a daily basis, provide the best in automotive repairs and tires. Therefor it doesn’t come as a surprise that Hyack Excel Tire consistently wins the Reader’s Choice award every year, as well as the A-List Award for Top Mechanic and Three Time Air Care Quality Repair Award. “Our business is about building a trusting relationship with our customers,” says David, adding they have added initiatives to reduce their environmental footprint. He also credits his staff for Hyack Tire’s continued success. “I have a knowledgeable, hard-working and caring team who are committed to quality workmanship and service,” he adds. Keeping you safe on the road is critical to everyone at Hyack Tire. They make sure to provide every customer with the best for all of their auto repair needs, including auto part replacements and tires. The auto shop utilizes state-of-the-art computerized equipment to ensure maximum life for your vehicle. From tire replacements and oil changes to brakes and catalytic converters, its experienced mechanics offer reliable service and support.

WHITE SPOT
Best Family Dining White Spot New Westminster has become synonymous with great service, great food and great people. Once again, local residents have proclaimed White Spot as Best Family Dining in the 2018 Reader’s Choice Awards. “We feel a great sense of pride for winning the Reader’s Choice Award” says Mathew Oommen, General Manager. Oommen says the legendary restaurant has an unbeatable combination of affordability, proximity and a menu offering something for everyone. “Another key to our success is that we promise to do whatever it takes to keep our customers happy”, says Oommen. White Spot is truly considered part of our province’s heritage and pride. According to White Spot’s story, it all started when founder Nat Bailey transformed his 1918 Model T truck into a traveling lunch counter for hungry sightseers at Vancouver’s Lookout Point. One day, as the young industrious Bailey was doing his runs, a customer leaned out of his window and asked him, “Why don’t you bring it to us?” So, Bailey hired three strapping young guys to take orders. And thus began one of the most enduring stories of phenomenal success in the industry. Nat’s energy and his passion for service set the stage for the first White Spot drive-in, which he opened in 1928 on Granville Street at 67th avenue in Vancouver. That commitment to excellence is echoed at New Westminster White Spot, and is evident in the number of awards the location has gathered over the years. This summer, enjoy your favourite White Spot fare while taking in some sun on their great outdoor patio. For breakfast, lunch or dinner, White Spot is the place to be for great eats in a fun, casual atmosphere. White Spot New Westminster is located at #134 610 6th street in Royal City Centre with plenty of free parking. For more information, visit www.whitespot.ca or call 604-522-4800. FRASERSIDE COMMUNITY SERVICES THORNBRIDGE GARDENS Best Retirement Residence
RE/MAX ADVANTAGE
Fraserside’s 45 years of community service began when a small group of people living in New Westminster saw and responded to a need in their community. This group found ways to help people help themselves, and our current team continues this approach to support over 1,800 people every year in six communities across Metro Vancouver. One major way we help people help themselves is by providing housing and residential support. In 1990, when the Woodlands institution continued to downsize, and its former residents with developmental disabilities needed homes, we responded by opening residential group homes in the Tri-Cities area. In 1992, when an apartment building fire in New Westminster left its inhabitants homeless, we contracted with the Ministry of Social Services to create an emergency family shelter. In 2000, when many adults living with mental health issues in New Westminster were having difficulties finding and sustaining suitable living arrangements, we contracted with Fraser Health to provide a transitional housing program. The success of that program led to additional contracts to purchase more homes and open more supported housing programs in Burnaby and the Tri-Cities. And in 2007, when individuals living with both mental health and substance use issues in Surrey were struggling for housing, we opened a supportive housing program. The site of this program has since expanded to provide low barrier housing for adults who are at risk of homelessness. Today we provide housing at 11 of our 14 facilities. But more is needed, especially in light of the regional housing shortage. Fraserside is actively assessing opportunities to expand our housing portfolio, seeking funding opportunities and recruiting personnel to meet this need. We invite you to join us! Consider donating to our registered charity or joining our team as an employee, practicum student or knowledge philanthropist. LIFETIME EYECARE
BUNCHES & BLOOMS FLORAL
For more than four decades, New Westminster’s small, medium to large-sized businesses have relied on the expertise of Brookes & Co., CPA. Founded in 1976 by Raymond (Ray) Brookes, the firm specializes in providing a broad range of professional accounting services – financial statements, tax, payroll, and bookkeeping services. Ray received his Bachelor of Commerce from UBC in 1968, then went on to graduate from the Certified General Accountants Association program, acquiring his CGA designation in 1974. From 1968 to 1976, Ray honed his skills working as an accountant in the manufacturing (of locksets), the wholesaling (of specialty building products), and the management and real estate development industries. Today, the award-winning firm has built a stellar reputation for its genuine desire to help, along with excellence in customer satisfaction and its small-town welcoming atmosphere. Brookes & Co. is committed to finding customized financial solutions for each and every one of its clients. “We have quite a casual and relaxed atmosphere in the office and I believe our clients pick up on this,” he says. “Being open (unofficially) on Saturdays and throughout the year has also attracted those clients who cannot take the time off from work during the weekdays.” Ray or his daughter, Liana, takes the time to explain in detail each client’s annual financial statements – thus enabling them to make better strategic decisions in a timely and informed manner. “We are about satisfying our clients ... relieving them of the stress of dealing with the mountain of paperwork (which they create) and with the various regulatory bodies and taxing authorities, such as the CRA,” explains the seasoned professional. “Our six-member team seems to have developed a successful synergy of people skills together with technical knowledge.”
Lifetime Eyecare has done it yet again by being voted both “Best Optometrists” and “Best Eyeglasses” in New Westminster. Lifetime Eyecare has won both of these distinctions almost every year since 2008! How in the world do they do it? For starters, Dawn Drever, the manager of over 12 years, helps navigate the waters on behalf of a wonderful team of experienced and friendly Opticians, Optometrists, Eye Specialists and customer care staff. You can really tell that these people enjoy helping people! “Whenever someone comes into Lifetime Eyecare, we really try to give them the best experience every single time.” Dawn says proudly. “That is why we often have more staff on the floor than we need, to make sure that every eye care patient and customer gets the very best service.” Then of course there is the amazing designer eyeglass frame selection. Lifetime Eyecare restocks almost monthly to ensure that they have the newest, coolest frames alongside with the most popular timeless styles. So, there is no question that they are best in eyeglasses. They have won that distinction every single year since 2008! But no eye care centre can be complete without a distinguished team of very experienced and talented eye doctors. Dr. Bachra, Dr. Zhou and Dr. Diep (Eye Specialist) work together seamlessly to give you the best care, the best service and of course effective and intelligent advice on how best to address your vision health concerns. On top of all of that, Lifetime Eyecare has an A+ Rating with BBB.org, the only eye care centre in New Westminster to carry that distinction. Call them today at (604) 522 – 1120 or visit them at 614 6th Street at the corner of 6th Street and Princess Avenue.

1. Music Lessons Are Number One. Do you want to learn music at a place where the music education is the most important thing? At Music Box Music Academy your music lessons are our business. Giving you a great learning experience is our # 1 priority. We are not a piano store or dance studio that also has music lessons, or an instrument retailer that has lessons in tiny little rooms with little or no accountability from the instructors. At Music Box our mission is providing you with a great music learning experience. 2. Free, all inclusive recitals & masterclasses! We are the only music school in New Westminster that offers not only free recitals, but also free masterclasses. Every parent just wants to know how their child is doing and if they are really progressing. The best way for a parent to understand if their investment in lessons is really worth it, is to have their child participate in a recital, many of our students choose to perform in our optional biannual recitals. This can only be found at Music Box.

ANGELINA’S DUTCH CORNER RESTAURANT
THANK YOU
Best Breakfast & Best Brunch & Best Sunday Brunch
Based in the Quay by the Fraser River, Angelina’s Dutch Corner is a solid favourite with locals and visitors who frequent here for breakfast, brunch, coffee, or lunch. And no wonder, with the natural scenery and stunning views just outside their doorstep, many people can be frequently found queuing up for a place to eat. This family-friendly restaurant features contemporary and traditional Dutch cuisine along with West Coast favourites. This popular local neighbourhood hangout serves fresh food at great prices in a casual atmosphere that keeps customers coming back again and again as shown on many positive online reviews. “At Angelina’s, we really appreciate our customers . . . we truly believe the customer is boss, and should be treated like royalty.” says Eric Missouri, who wears many hats– owner, chef and manager. Since Eric took over the trendy restaurant five and a half years ago, this busy entrepreneur has not only increased sales by a whopping 300% and still climbing. He has turned the restaurant into one of the most popular spots in New West. Everything is made from scratch, with Eric sourcing the freshest local ingredients. Renowned in the Royal City for its signature Dutch pannekoek, waffles and pancakes, Angelina’s also makes a mean bennie and sandwiches for the lunch crowd. Now, a pannekoek is larger and thinner than a pancake, but not as thin as a crepe. They can have slices of back bacon, apples, cheese or raisins. Plain ones can also be eaten with treacle (a syrup made of sugar beets), appelstroop (an unspiced Dutch variety of apple butter) or just plain powdered sugar. Angelina’s Dutch Corner also feature a wide selection of omelettes, breakfast plates, sandwiches and soups. Lunch items are also available for take out or catering. The full menu can be downloaded and viewed on angelinasdutchcorner.ca. Bon appetit!

The unsung hero of our Canada Day Fireworks
READERS CHOICE AWARD FOR
BEST ANNUAL FESTIVAL Thank you for voting us Best Festival
Year after year, New Westminster residents and tourists alike, eyes upward and faces aglow, marvel at the stunning display of fireworks, lifting the spirits of our community in this timehonoured Canada Day tradition. The spectacular display overhead is reflected on the surface of the Fraser River. On the river, one man, alone in the elements, works his vessel with the current. Each year, solely to serve his community without seeking anything in return, he takes it upon himself to fuel his tugboat and barge, and pilot his vessels to be positioned in front of the New Westminster Quay. This man, understated and humble, is Kim Alipradini. He is as elusive as he is reliable, and he is the unsung hero of the Fireworks. As the owner of Valley Towing, the selfless service he provides makes it possible for our diverse community to enjoy this annual event. We would like to acknowledge and thank Kim publicly on behalf of the New Westminster Hyack Festival Association. His service and commitment to our not-for-profit and also to our community make him invaluable, and a much-appreciated neighbour and friend. We are lucky to know him and to have him in our community. Thank you, Kim.

In addition, she has performed at international jazz festivals across the USA, from Florida to California and in-between. IMPERIAL PHARMACY
KINMAN & ASSOCIATES
HYACK FESTIVAL
Independent pharmacies offer a wide range of services that many of the larger, chain pharmacies and big box retailers do, but they also offer something else - down home friendliness and exceptional personal customer care. Those are just a couple of reasons why Imperial Pharmacy is a multiple award-winning pharmacy. Just as important to Imperial Pharmacy’s success is that everyone takes the time to get to know its customers – they get to know what they need and understand their health challenges and conditions. And that builds trust. Since 2003, residents have trusted the professional team here. Imperial Pharmacy offers a wide variety of prescription and non-prescription items including herbal products, vitamins, nutritional supplements, pharmaceutical compounding, home health care products, pressure stockings, medical supplies, blister packs and compliance packaging. The independent pharmacy also provides flu vaccinations, Diabetes counselling, glucose monitor training, medication reviews and free blood pressure monitoring. “We care about people’s health and we care about their kids’ health...we are proud not to sell tobacco,” says owner and pharmacist with more than 25 years of experience, RidaBazzi. Rida comes with a wealth of education and experience. He obtained his bachelor’s Degree in pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences in 1992. Since then, he has worked in the industry as a pharmacist, and pharmacy manager as well as he is involved in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing, Distribution and Export.. He also taught part time in the faculty of pharmacy and is a member of several prestigious Canadian and International Associations. Residents know that at Imperial Pharmacy, everyone is committed to developing long term relationships with each customer, ensuring everyone receives the best possible care. Health care at its best is right here in your neighbourhood at Imperial Pharmacy.
When someone is injured in a car crash, has a problem with a renovation, or been left out of a Will, New Westminster residents can rely on Kinman & Associates to help them navigate these complex legal issues. Founded in 2007 by Ian Kinman, Barrister & Solicitor, the firm’s commitment to its clients has earned them a Reader’s Choice award. As an experienced litigator with more than three decades specializing in personal injury, construction litigation and corporate/commercial work for small businesses, Ian has earned a reputation as a well-respected local lawyer. Although the subject of death and wills can seem morbid, intimidating, and sometimes confusing, the expert lawyers at Kinman & Associates will make it much easier. “With an aging population, we are seeing a lot more cases dealing with estates and their aftermath,” Ian says. “We are witnesses to an unmet need for proper estate planning. Even homeowners who lived modest lives can leave behind multi-million dollar estates. Many of the cases we see could have been avoided if the deceased had properly planned their estates in advance of their passing. Every person should have a Will. We recently held a 10 percent off promotion for new Wills at our Hyack Festival booth.” The well-established, multi-disciplinary firm succeeds because, Ian says, everyone at the firm truly listens to the needs of its clients. Having a mix of senior and junior lawyers helps Kinman & Associates deliver cost-effective legal services in accordance with each client’s budget. “Many services are available at fixed cost, avoiding the uncertainty of ‘billable hours’ and allowing clients to create a realistic budget for their legal issue,” he adds. “Appointments are available outside of usual business hours. If there’s an emergency and I need a plumber, I can find one. Why should finding a lawyer be any different?”
One of the longest running premiere non-profit arts and cultural festivals in British Columbia has garnered another Readers’ Choice award. The 47th Annual Hyack Festival has become an iconic local celebration, featuring multicultural activities for all ages, free live performances by well-known Vancouver-based Indie artists, great food, as well as the beloved Hyack International Parade. Brunella Battista, Executive Director with the multiple awardwinning Hyack Festival Association, credits the amazing pool of volunteers - from directors to event volunteers - who year after year, come and support this popular family event. She believes the success can also be traced to festival attendees’ interest on enduring themes such as being the Royal City, a place of significant history, and proud tradition of preserving heritage. “In 2017, the brand new Hyack Float, its Theme and Team were awarded the International Award at the Daffodil Festival in Tacoma, Washington,” Brunella adds. In addition, Hyack represents New Westminster in different communities throughout the province and the Pacific Northwest during parades and other events. Another reason for its phenomenal appeal is that the association strives to keep the festival fresh. Brunella went on to say Hyack is truly invested in the community, so to that end they are inviting new partnerships with local stakeholders. “We are also striving to become more accessible online and ensuring that residents know that the Hyack Festival Association is inclusive and embracing of our diverse population,” Brunella explains. “Look out for updates on our new activities and events at hyackfestival.com or on Facebook.”

PATTI GOSS
Best Realtor
There are no short cuts to success in the real estate business, and few realtors know this better than Patti Goss, who has close to 30 years of experience in this highly competitive industry and tight market. She has developed a level of expertise and leadingedge approach to buying and selling homes that has won her a legion of clients who have voted her best realtor in New West. The fact that more than 70 per cent of her business is referrals from past clients is significant and speaks to the trust and excellence in service she provides. “My business is all about people and helping them through the buying and selling process,” says Patti. “Because we are a team of three, (her son Wes Goss joined her team in 2011), we can provide exceptional service and coverage seven days a week.” The other member of her team includes Annabelle Steffler, who helps with the all-important social media communications and administrative duties. “Being a team allows us to provide better coverage and to pay close attention to the details, such as offering detailed buyer and seller guides, attending all showings and preparing the home to be shown at its best,” she says. “We do not use lockboxes or ask the realtors to pick the key up at our office.” With a focus on minutiae as well as the big picture, Patti has earned the respect of those in the industry, having been honoured numerous times by a panel of her peers with awards from RE/MAX of Western Canada and RE/MAX International, as well as Outstanding Performances awards for several years. In addition to having lived in New West for over 40 years, Patti has also committed hundreds of hours of volunteer work, sponsored worthy community causes and contributed to charitable organizations in the municipality and beyond. She’s a member and former Director of the New Westminster Chamber of Commerce, and she served six years as the Director of the Burnaby/New Westminster/Tri Cities Real Estate division. She volunteers with Meals on Wheels, sponsors the New Westminster Culture Crawl, the New Westminster Youth Ambassador Society, and the Greater Vancouver Go Go’s, an organization that helps grandmothers in Africa. Her office also conducts a blanket drive every winter and a portion of the team’s sales goes toward the Children’s Miracle Network. Summer’s in full swing. It’s hot, it’s sweaty. But there’s one saving grace, and that’s a trip to the local ice cream shop. In New Westminster, when people want to indulge in sweet, velvety ice cream, they head to New Westminster Dairy Queen. For nearly three decades, the multiple award-winning Dairy Queen has been an integral part of the community under leadership of the Sam family. “We make everything in our store fresh to order, which is a big part of our Fan Food motive,” says Amanda, Store Manager. “We like to ensure that our fans are getting the best service.” Amanda credits DQ’s continued success on friendly, helpful staff, a great tasting product and that good old-fashioned service, where clients are greeted by name. “We’ve been a part of the New Westminster community for many years now and have many fans that have been coming since they, themselves, were children,” adds Amanda. “Our focus has always been the customers and ensuring a positive atmosphere making us a place our customers enjoy visiting.” But don’t be mistaken. Dairy Queen is more than just an ice cream parlour. DQ offers a wide variety of hamburgers, chicken wraps, salads and much more. Meanwhile, community is ingrained in the philosophy of Dairy Queen. Each year, DQ is involved in local charities, sports teams as well as the Children’s Miracle Network’s, raising thousands for Children’s Hospital through its Miracle Treat Day selling Blizzard, raffle baskets, 50/50 draws, face painting, and games. “We take pride in giving back to the community through donations to New Westminster Police and Fire Department, New Westminster Little League, local churches and elementary and secondary schools, just to name a few,” adds Amanda.
A superb piece of hand-crafted jewellery is very special. The care, thought, exclusive materials and sheer craftsmanship that goes into custom jewelry makes the final creation incredibly personal and beautiful. This is exactly what Cartwright Jewelers Ltd has offered, and more, since 1933. A Readers Choice award winner for 19 years running, owner Susan Cartwright-Coates says its success also lies in the fact that “In this day and age where everything is going bigger and less personal, we excel in servicing the customer and making them feel like a somebody. Everybody who walks through the door is treated like a personal friend.” In fact, this landmark jeweler is synonymous with exceptional customer service. Since its founder James Daniel Cartwright began as a watchmaker and jeweller in downtown New Westminster, they have been dedicated to creating the finest shopping experience. “Excellent customer service and experience has been and will always be the cornerstone of our family business, combined with consistent top-quality craftsmanship and design,” adds Susan. As a full-service jewellery store, this third-generation familyowned business does everything from jewellery repair to the most stunning custom design work. Its design team creates timeless pieces of jewellery you will be proud to pass on for generations to come. Meanwhile, Susan is extremely grateful to the community, which has supported Cartwright Jewelers over the last 85 years. She regularly donates to more than 40 different local non-profit organizations a year, including several local festivals. “Our yearly fundraiser supports the CKNW Kids Fund (formerly The CKNW Orphans Fund),” she adds. “We have raised over $150,000.00 in the past 18 years.”

For more than four decades, the Rivers Reach Pub has been New Westminster’s flagship pub - a destination for locals and visitors alike. Part of its phenomenal success lies with its owner/ proprietor, George, who comes with a long history in the hospitality industry. You could say that running an award-winning pub - one that consistently wins Chamber of Commerce and Reader’s Choice nods, as well provincial awards, service and business awards - is in the blood. That’s because George learned from the best; his father, Christos, is one of the founders of Boston Pizza. The pub boasts its very own award–winning liquor store with an in house wine store as well. River’s Reach Pub continues to bring in large numbers of locals and out-of-towners, who are attracted by the cozy atmosphere, delectable fare and an excellent range of imported and craft beers. This combination makes this pub one that has people talking - even celebrities. You might be lucky enough to catch sight of local sportsman or a famous face! “We offer consistency, impeccable service, great atmosphere, great quality food, great pricing,” says George, adding they offer weekly meal and drink specials in the pub and seniors discount on Tuesdays in the liquor store. It’s loyal clientele also love the pub’s prizes, promotions and giveaways consisting of trips to NHL destinations, BBQs, patio sets, televisions and more. George likes to stay ahead of the game, be it business or entertainment. Coming soon to the pub, you can request your favorite songs from your table through your smartphones! As a longtime resident of New Westminster, George is truly invested in the community. They regularly donate or sponsor local sports teams, schools, fire and police departments, food bank, the Michael Cuccione Foundation, Salvation Army and many other local charities. “A big thank you to the community for their continuing support and highly efficient staff that work tirelessly to make River’s Reach the best neighborhood pub in New Westminster,” adds George.
As soon as you walk through the doors of the multiple award-winning Royal Tandoori Indian Restaurant, you are in for a culinary journey through some of the best dishes that draws from its roots in East Africa and the Middle East. In the heart of New Westminster’s uptown district, Royal Tandoori has been in business nearly two decades and has consistently enjoyed a reputation for the best East Indian Food in the city. That’s because Royal Tandoori Indian Restaurant is well-known for its high quality of food and friendly service, thanks to owner/chef Jasminder Singh, and his wife Kulwinder Sandhi. An exceptional chef, Jasminder has been in the food industry for more than three decades, having run a successful restaurant in India for more than 20 years. Voted one of the finest in Indian cuisine by loyal fans across the Lower Mainland, start your adventure with some of Jasminder’s famous Nan bread. He prepares it fresh every day and offers a choice of regular Nan or Nan with garlic, onion, chicken, potatoes (Allu) or spinach. Spread some of his signature Dhai Bhalla, which is ground lentil balls in yogurt, or some delicious Raita, made of yogurt and cucumbers, on the bread for a tasty appetizer. If you prefer, go for some authentic samosas or vegetarian Pakauras to start your meal. One of Jasminder’s family recipes is the mouthwatering mango butter chicken, which is a culinary delight, prepared in clay over with herbs, tomatoes, cream and a delicious mango butter sauce. For those who are vegetarians, the Royal Tandoori offers several choices. Relish in the mouthwatering Jalfrezi Curry or try the Veggi Korma, a blend of mixed vegetables cooked in creamy sauce made daily in the restaurant’s kitchen. No matter what you order, Royal Tandoori will delight all of your senses.

NURSE NEXT DOOR
THE TANNING STUDIO
Many “Boomers” must make decisions about their aging parents’ housing options. As our lifespan increases, many seniors are able to remain independent but others will require assistance of some sort. For many seniors, staying in their own home is the best. At Nurse Next Door Home Care Services, Wendy J. Scott, co-owner and Director of Care, understands that all too well. A registered nurse for over 41 years, she co-founded the award-winning home care business out of a very personal reason – her beloved father. After her father was discharged from hospital, Wendy suddenly realized the benefits of care delivered within the home and a Nurse Next Door home care franchise was the best way to deliver on her passion. “Nurse Next Door senior home care is not just about finding someone who can come when you need them,” she explains. “We go to great lengths to make sure we have the perfect match and will make it right if we don’t get it the first time.” Nurse Next Door brings expertise and peace of mind to families and their loved ones through a wide range of senior home care, from housekeeping to palliative care. Wendy also provides learning opportunities for seniors on a variety of topics at the Seniors Active in Living Program, Bonsor 55+ Community Centre, Century House, and Cameron Community Centre. She teaches for the Canadian Diabetes Association and provides written information on this chronic health condition. Wendy participates as a nursing consultant for an addictions rehabilitation program and for a centre for marginalized women. Wendy runs a wellness program in independent living residences. She participates in 2-3 community events a month such as Senior Fairs, the Hyack Festival, and Sapperton Days. Wendy sets up and runs multiple flu vaccine clinics throughout the fall and winter.
Most of us want that coveted sun-kissed skin without exposure to harmful UV rays. For many in New Westminster, there is only one place to go - the multiple Readers Choice award-winning The Tanning Studio. Opened since 2009, the salon offers several options for customers’ unique wants and needs. “For those who are more focussed on holistic skin care and fitness, our Beauty Angel Red Light Therapy is perfect for them,” says Chantal Dawes Owner/Operator, who purchased the popular salon in February 2015. “For those looking for an even premium spray tanning experience without going in the sun, we have the Versa Spa with our very own TTS Glow clear and bronze solution. As well as our staff is trained for custom hand held air brush tanning.” There are several benefits to tanning salons, including improved appearance, enhanced mood, and increased vitamin D levels. The Tanning Studio showcases a variety of sun beds - everything from a level 1 to 5. Chantal explains that Level 1 provides more UVB to produce vitamin D, while Level 4 is a seven-minute stand-up for those on the go, and its Level 5 high pressure bed offers more UVA browning rays. The studio also prides itself on being a customer-service driven company, which offers state-of-the-art equipment in a facility that is clean and welcoming. The Tanning Studio experience begins the moment you walk in the door and are warmly greeted by one of its courteous and professional employees, all of whom are Smart Tan certified. New clients get a tour of the facility with each bed’s features explained. Meanwhile, Chantal comes to the industry armed with 17 years of experience, including 14 as an air brush artist. Smart Tan certified, she managed several salons before realizing her dream of owning her own. When you want that glow of health, discover The Tanning Studio.
