Event encourages you to grow some food

Theresa McManus tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

There will be gardening giveaways galore at the launch of this year’s Plant A Row – Grow a Row program. The annual program encourages folks to plant an extra row of food – or more – in their gardens or planters to donate to folks in need of fresh produce. Starting on June 12, Plant a Row-Grow a Row collection of fresh (homegrown or store bought) and nonperishable food donations will take place every Sunday from 8:30 to 9:15 a.m. at St.Thomas More Collegiate. But first, organizers are kicking off this year’s program with a fun-filled giveaway event. “It’s really about come in and join in on the fun,” said Claude LeDoux, who coordinates the local program. “You will be amazed at what you are going to get.The gifts are very substantial.” Prior to COVID-19, the program held a spring garden party featuring speakers and giveaways to kick off the season. Like last year, this year’s May 1 event will be a drive-thru where people can pick up some gardening goodies (first come, first served) and make donations to two charities. “We are looking for donations – financial and food goods. That will be for Union Gospel Mis-

sion and Ryan’s Rainbow, which is for families. They do about 160 to 180 packages of food for families. They have that many families that they support,” LeDoux said. “All the food goes to those different locations.” Plant a Row – Grow a Row volunteers will be giving out vegetable transplants and seeds, pre-planted, decorative containers with vegetable plants, perennial plants, potting soil, and lots of items to start your garden off right! Garden gifts have been donated by master gardener Brian Minter, the Compost Council of Canada, GardenWorks, local horticultural suppliers, volunteers and LeDoux. “We have way more than we had last year,” he said. “Always, lots of items and gifts for children – specifically to get them involved in growing food, vegetables for themselves and the community, for them to learn and be part of our community.” The Compost Council of Canada is kicking off its across-Canada Compost Week events at the Plant a Row – Grow a Row event. It will be donating seeds and bagged compost for the event. “Because of how strong we have been and showing the strength of our community in giving, they are always amazed at what we do, how much we donate, how much food we give,

Growing concern: Claude LeDoux wants you to get growing. PHOTO JENNIFER GAUTHIER

and they are sending a representative from the Compost Council to start off their across Canada Compost Week. They are doing New Westminster and then they will go to Calgary, etc.” LeDoux said interest in gardening has surged since the start of the pandemic. “It’s been overwhelming. The entire industry is reeling with the interest and the want to have this available to them – all the plants or seeds or containers,” he said. “It has advanced very quickly, where

before people were interested but now they really have taken a much stronger interest, which is great for us.” LeDoux, who is the City of New Westminster’s former horticultural manager and the founder of the local Plant a Row- Grow a Row program, encourages people to grow vegetables and fruits – and to try growing things they may not have grown before. “There has been a huge uptake,” he said. “The big interest is in diversity in all sorts of different types

of vegetables. That’s why I have lots of different types of seed.” The 2022 Plant a Row Grow a Row event is on Sunday, May 1 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the St. Thomas More Collegiate school parking lot, 7450 12th Ave. (just across the border in Burnaby off of Kingsway). People are asked to wear masks and stay in their cars; they’ll drive into the school parking lot and be directed by volunteers on where to go. Volunteers will also

gratefully accept cash donations, and donations of non-perishable food items for Plant a RowGrow a Row, Ryan’s Rainbow Emergency Food Outreach in Burnaby, and Union Gospel Mission in New Westminster. The weekly Plant a Row – Grow a Row collection of fresh and nonperishable food donations runs every Sunday from June 12 to Oct. 2, 8:30 to 9:15 a.m., at St. Thomas More Collegiate.

EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS WEEK

During the week of May 1-7, New Westminster’s Emergency Management Office encourages everyone to take concrete actions to be better prepared to protect themselves and their families during emergencies: know the risks, make a plan and have an emergency kit. This year we are focusing our efforts on reminding everyone to create a communication network. This ensures, during an emergency, you have friends, family or neighbours you reach out to and use if needed. As we saw last year with the heat, we all need to have a personal plan that we can mobilize. We need to continue to adapt and be more resilient as these events continue occur. Visit preparedbc.ca for more tips and information.

Opinion MY VIEW KEITH BALDREY

B.C. could see new ridings created

The urban-rural divide that exists in B.C. politics may soon become wider. That is because the B.C. Electoral Boundaries Commission, which could recommend a significant redrawing of the province’s electoral map, is nearing the end of the public hearing process. The three-person commission – headed by B.C. Supreme Court Justice Nitya Iyer – will file its preliminary report by October (followed by more consultation and feedback, with the final report due in April 2023), and is now embarking on a tour of 15 communities in the north, interior and the coast. The Iyer commission is the 10th such commission since 1965 (currently, one is struck after every second provincial election). It has been given the ability to come back with recommended changes that could tower over the changes made by its predecessors. The current commission can recommend the addition of up to six more ridings. But it’s also tasked with ensuring the principle of representation by population is followed in establishing riding boundaries, as well as taking into account historical and regional interests. Any additional ridings will likely be located in regions with high population growth rates since the last commission in 2014: Langley/Surrey/Abbotsford, the Okanagan and perhaps Vancouver Island. The commission will no doubt find it easier to create new ridings compared to recommending that some ridings in less-populated areas be eliminated or combined. A curious part of the terms of reference for the commission was removing the specific protection that was provided to 17 ridings in the North, the Columbia-Kootenay region and

the Cariboo-Thompson regions. The 2014 commission was specifically prevented from touching those ridings even if their population base was significantly lower than the provincial average. The current commission faces no such restrictions. Since then, the population gap between many of those ridings and the ridings in Metro Vancouver has grown. For example, in the 2020 election there were more than 50,000 voters in each of four Okanagan ridings, as well as ones in Langley, Surrey and the Capital, but there were less than 20,000 voters in each of the northern ridings of North Coast, Nechako Lakes, Stikine and Peace River South. Some BC Liberal MLAs are worried about the commission coming back with recommendations that could combine the two Cariboo ridings as well as the two Peace River ridings. I will be surprised if the commission eliminates more than one or two rural ridings. More likely it will opt for the expansion approach, with new seats in urban areas. As an aside, if the commission does recommend the creation of a handful of ridings it could result in a completely new look for the B.C. legislature chamber. Simply put, there may not be enough physical space to put even a few more desks on the floor. One potential option being considered: get rid of the desks and move to “benches” as they have in the Mother Parliament in the British House of Commons in London. In any event, I expect the urban-rural divide when it comes to B.C.’s electoral ridings will be even more visible come the next provincial election. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global BC.

Topic: Should people be charged for take-out bags? “We have more important things to worry about than 25-cent bags.”

“I don’t think it makes sense for take-out and drivethru where there is a risk of contamination.”

Letters INBOX

We need more GPs

Pay hikes unfair

Editor: I am worried about the patients in our community because of the lack of new family physicians coming into our community. More and more patients are finding their physicians retiring with no one to replace them. I have been in practice for 42 years. The new graduates simply do not see the point of practising the way us “old docs” have been doing. It is far more lucrative for them to work as hospitalists or walk-in docs. We need to modernize how we fund and operate clinics. The growing amount of paperwork for family doctors is taking us away from providing patient care. We need to create healthy working conditions for family doctors, including reducing administrative burdens and providing substitute/locum physicians for when we are away. Supporting family doctors will result in healthier patients and communities. Almost 900,000 British Columbians do not have a family doctor and that number is growing every day. Our community is losing two family physicians in the next two months – which puts over 2,000 more patients without an FP. I am afraid I may soon be adding to that number. Dr. Gary Hayes

Editor: Finance Minister Selina Robinson’s bogus justification for cabinet pay hikes is equal parts self-serving and self-destructive. By defending the increases in salary for 25 of the most powerful individuals in the province as necessary to prevent a conflict of interest, Robinson is perpetuating a pejorative caricature of elected officials that they seek not to serve the public interest but instead their own. According to her reasoning, the premier needs a pay raise in the tens of thousands so he doesn’t put his own financial interests ahead of meeting his official oath to serve the needs of five million-plus British Columbians. Robinson’s justification not only insults British Columbians’ values and intelligence, it has the effect of driving the cynical view of politicians that is dangerous for trust in government. Furthermore, her justifications crumble when tested against reality, as self-preservation in the form of winning the support of the voting public to keep their job overrides any short term financial interests Robinson asserts can influence an elected member of cabinet to make decisions against delivering needed services in education and health care. calated by volunteers, resulting in huge taxpayer savings, according to the B.C. division of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA). The events of the two years — extreme heat, wildfires, floods and the ongoing pandemic — have had profound impacts on our physical and mental health, the CMHA said in a statement. Those feelings for many are compounded by yearend festivities and celebrations. “Behind every British Columbian is a network of agencies that together provide 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week support for wherever you find yourself. We call it a continuum of care and support you in areas such as crisis intervention, suicide prevention, and long-term mental health support,” the association’s Jonny Morris, and Stacy Ashton with the Crisis Intervention and Suicide Prevention of BC, said in a news release. B.C. crisis lines have

720 volunteers and 110 staff members, all there to help when people need to reach out. When people call a crisis line, no matter where they are in B.C., they’re connected with a specially trained crisis responder ready to listen, the pair noted. Ashton and Morris said volunteers and staff provided more than 2.5 million minutes of support to British Columbians, including 8,283 opioid or addictions-related interactions, and 30,771 calls where suicide was the primary or contributing factor. Through de-escalation work, the crisis lines saved B.C. taxpayers $10.4 million in hospital and urgent mental health response and $47.9 million in police attendance last year, they said. If you are considering suicide, or know someone who is, call 1-800-SUICIDE provincewide, 24 hours a day, or 3106789. Or, the association website can be reached at www.cmha.bc.ca.

City New civic electors group enters New West scene

PLANT SALE

NDP-affiliated politicians are among those setting up Community First, which has its AGM tonight Theresa McManus

tmcmanus@newwestrecord.ca

Some heavy hitters on the local political scene have helped form a new electoral organization in New Westminster. Former MP and MLA Dawn Black, former MLA Judy Darcy, former city councillor Bill Harper, some current city council and school board politicos, and community activists including Raunaq Singh, David Black and Tania Jarzebiak are among about two dozen residents who have been involved in discussions leading to the creation of Community First, said interim spokesperson Cheryl Greenhalgh. Community First will hold its founding annual general meeting on Thursday April 28 at 7 p.m., with the online meeting being open to all of its members. Greenhalgh said the

AGM will be a business meeting, where members adopt bylaws and elect an executive. A nomination meeting will be set for a later date. Greenhalgh said Community First hopes to support “many incumbents,” but it will provide an opportunity for anyone who shares its values to run for a nomination. She couldn’t say how many city council and school board candidates it will be putting forward until it goes through a candidate search process and a nomination process, nor could she say which incumbents may be involved. She said it’s “certainly possible” the group will also field a mayoral candidate. Community First is the second announced leftaligned electors group in New West. In December 2021, a group called Together

New West held its founding AGM and announced plans to run candidates for school board and city council. After its name conflicted with a campaign by the downtown business association, it announced in late December it would be renamed Forward New West – but has not made any public statements since that time. As of April 27, Elections BC still had school board chair Gurveen Dhaliwal listed as the group’s authorized principal official and Coun. Patrick Johnstone as its financial agent. Some of the organizers of Community First, including Greenhalgh, had attended the Together New West AGM in December 2021. Greenhalgh said there is “some crossover” between the two groups, but Community First is “a new organization, new people and a new direction.”

Downtown businessman joins Progressives slate Theresa McManus

A well-known local businessman is officially in the race for a seat on New Westminster city council. Paul Minhas, who owns Begbie’s Pub and the former Heritage Grill on Columbia Street, is joining the New West Progressives as one of their council candidates in the Oct. 15 civic election. He’ll be running alongside previously announced candidates Rick Folka and Jiayi Li-McCarthy. “It’s a great honour to be running with the NWP and providing voters with a positive alternative to the current council,” he said in

Progressives name council candidates Continued from page 13 Minhas, who was also involved in helping to kick start New Westminster’s annual Pride Week, the Royal City Show & Shine and the food truck festival, opened Begbie’s Pub on Columbia Street in 2016. The Progressives’ other two council candidates so far are a former chartered professional accounted and a former champion cyclist. Folka, who was born in New Westminster and raised his family in the city, received his accounting designation from the Society of Management Accountants of British Columbia in 1981. Folka, who lives in Glenbrooke North with his wife Joanne, was previously chair of the board at the former St. Mary’s Hospital. Li-McCarthy is a former champion cyclist who was a part of the China National Cyclist Team. A member of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union local 1518, Li-McCarthy has worked at the Safeway store in Royal Square mall for the past 15 years and previously worked as the manager of business Development for Jiahao Commercial Buildings in Shenyang China. INPUT WANTED The New West Progressives, which formed in

2017, are holding a series of townhall forums to get input that will help shape their 2022 election platform. The forums are taking place at the Queensborough Community Centre on Thursday, May 5 from 6:30 to 8 p.m.; at the Inn at the Quay on Tuesday, May 10 from 7 to 8:30 p.m.; and at the Royal City Curling Club on Tuesday, May 17 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. “Now that we’re able to gather in-person once again to get direct feedback from the community, it’s important we do so to ensure that our platform reflects their priorities,” Armstrong said. “This type of policy development and feedback needs to happen more regularly at city hall. It’s something our team intends to implement rather quickly after we get elected.” In addition to the townhall forums, the New West Progressives have launched an online survey to gather additional feedback from local residents and small businesses. The deadline to complete the survey is May 31. To provide your input, go to www.nwprogressives. ca/survey. The New West Progressives say they’ll use feedback from the survey and townhall forums to develop their council campaign platform.

Q

Help! My investment portfolio is down and it’s making me really nervous, what should I do?

Q

What are common Denture Problems?

A

First, ask yourself when you’ll need to access that money. If it is a long way off, will your investment have time to recover? If it’s a shorter time frame, you might need reconsider your strategy, but don’t jump to change things right away, as losses are solidified when you sell. Remember you hold units in funds, or shares in stocks, and even if the price is down now, you still hold the same number of units or shares which can recover later. Is the cause of the losses something that will directly impact the specific companies that you’ve invested in? If so, look at the sectors of the economy that will profit during this time and diversify by adding or increasing holdings in those sectors.

A

If you wear dentures, it is very important you keep your mouth clean and healthy. You should also only wear dentures that fit properly. Otherwise, the following problems may occur: • Gum and mouth irritation • Problems eating and speaking • Dentures that move around in your mouth • Mouth infections • Over closed bite • Cracking at the corners of the mouth • Bacteria build up • Aesthetically displeasing If you have problems with your dentures, see your Denturist right away. Your dentures may need to be adjusted or replaced. Make sure your dentures fit. Over time, your gums and bones will change and your dentures won’t fit as well. When this happens, your dentures need to be adjusted, relined, or replaced by your Denturist.

Q

How do I choose a toothpaste?

Q

Are bicycles covered under my home insurance?

A

Since there is no “silver bullet” toothpaste, the best option for you will depend on the specific needs of your mouth. As a general rule, the most important ingredient of any toothpaste is fluoride for cavity control. If you choose a toothpaste without fluoride for personal reasons, be aware that more frequent brushing and flossing might be needed to prevent cavities. Beyond fluoride, a good place to start your search is by asking your dentist what areas of your mouth could use improvement. For example, if you have a lot of plaque build-up, a toothpaste aimed at tartar control would be best for you. Some other useful toothpaste options include anti-sensitivity, tooth whitening, and gum care. It is also wise to choose a toothpaste that has received the Canadian Dental Association seal of approval. Any toothpaste that has received this approval is safe to use and will help you keep your teeth their healthiest!

A

Insurance Myth: Bicycles are covered under policies for their full replacement cost. Insurance Truth: Most insurers in Canada have a limitation on bicycles. We sympathize with bicycle theft victims and urge people to check their insurance policy carefully as most insurers in Canada have a limitation on bikes or have no coverage whatsoever. For an extra premium, an insurance Rider insuring a specific bike, is available that you can add to your existing policy to cover your bike for replacement cost. An insurance Rider is also available for an extra premium that will cover your bike replacement cost anywhere in the world should it get stolen.

What is Sponsored Content?

Q

Sponsored Content is a brand-sponsored article that lives on a media publisher’s website. It looks and reads like the publications own content but is, in fact, a paid advertisement. It positions the brand as an expert by delivering interesting content that is relevant to a publisher’s audience. As we move further down the digital road, it’s important to connect with your audience online. Not merely advertise products and services… spark interest, answer questions, educate readers with valuable information. One example of this would be for a Realtor to sponsor an article on “How to turn your Basement Suite into a Rental Unit?” A Travel Agency could talk about “5 Best Trips to Cure the Winter Blues!” Maybe a Yoga Studio discusses “The Health Benefits of Maintaining a Good Work-Life Balance?”The general idea is to provide your audience with helpful, interesting, even must read articles… sponsored by your business of course! It’s a softer, but more memorable sell, presented in a journalistic style. Sponsored Content builds brand trust & credibility, when used effectively can drive online traffic and engagement by leaps and bounds!!

The 1867 British North America Act (BNA) created the legal framework of Canada, assigning different responsibilities or jurisdictions of activities to the Federal and Provincial Governments, as listed in sections 91 and 92 of the BNA eg divorce is a Federal responsibility but the division of family assets is a Provincial responsibility. Upon a marital separation in British Columbia, the 2013 Family Law Act (FLA) directs spouses to start with an equal share of the assets & debts acquired during their marriage. However, some analysis is required including whether assets or debts can be “excluded”, and whether there are grounds for a different result than an equal share. Since 2013 at least, it does not matter if your marriage was common-law or same-sex or otherwise. WeCanHelp@seatoskylaw.com 778-728-0208.

Celebrating Seniors

Put empathy into action by becoming a volunteer Margaret Coates contributor

This year National Volunteer Week is April 24 to the 30, and the theme for 2022 is Empathy in Action. The Volunteer Canada website says “volunteering can help us develop empathy, to see the world through the eyes of others. It can connect people from diverse backgrounds and life experiences, expanding our views. It can build our capacity to work collectively and contribute to a vibrant, inclusive society.” Lofty ideals for volunteering, indeed. Volunteering hours in Canada are considerable in terms of the value they represent to our society. The Conference Board of Canada, in a 2018 publi-

cation called The Value of Volunteering in Canada, said “about 44 per cent of Canadians volunteer an average of 156 hours a year. This is a massive work effort, providing services that are equivalent to 6.5 per cent of employment – about the size of employment in education. If measured, volunteering would add an estimated $56 billion to economic activity.” Volunteers everywhere are to be warmly thanked and acknowledged for their dedication, time, and contributions. But why volunteer, you might ask? For many of us the benefits of volunteering may not be as lofty as the ideals expressed by Volunteer Canada, but there are many other advantages. In addition to helping people

in need, furthering good causes and contributing to the good of the community, the benefits of volunteering can be great for you as an individual.Volunteering can offer seniors significant physical, emotional, and cognitive/brain health benefits. For me personally, I love the interaction with my community, and I love the added value that volunteering gives to my life. After retiring you might find yourself adrift with less to occupy yourself than when you had a job. Volunteering can be a great way to share your talents, wisdom, and the experience that you gained over a lifetime of working. If you volunteer at this stage of your life, you can still do all the post retirement things you dreamed

about as a job holder – organizations are glad to have you on board for any time that you can give. Volunteering connects

you to others, is good for the mind and body, and it can bring fun and fulfillment to your life.Volunteering can give you op-

portunities to learn new skills, expand your horizons, stay active, and give you a sense of belonging. Continued on page 19

Study will look at COVID-19 impact on long-term care homes COVID-19 has killed more people in long-term care homes than anywhere else in British Columbia. Now, a sweeping new study is setting out to answer the question:Why them?

The study, which involves over a dozen of B.C.’s leading virologists, immunologists and lab researchers, hinges its investigation on how elderly immune systems respond to a coronavirus infec-

tion. From there, researchers will look at elderly immune responses to vaccines — both in those who never tested positive for the virus and those who recovered from a previous infection.

“We still don’t know why COVID is having such a devastating impact on long-term care, especially the residents,” said lead researcher Dr. Marc Romney, a clinical associate professor in UBC’s

faculty of medicine and the medical leader for medical microbiology and virology at St. Paul’s Hospital. Romney has spent his career tracking emerging pathogens, from SARS

in California in the early 2000s to the global response to Ebola and outbreaks of C. difficile in B.C. hospitals — a bacteria causing a form of infectious diarrhea, especially deadly among seniors.

Celebrating Seniors

Volunteering can help seniors combat isolation

Continued from page 17 It can reduce stress, anxiety, and depression.Volunteering can also reduce low self-esteem and social isolation. Seniors who are at risk of social isolation may find volunteering an important way to become integrated in the community, thus reducing that risk. They can get to know the community, make new friends, and feel valued and part of a team effort. During the worst of the COVID -19 pandemic, volunteer opportunities decreased, and this was a difficult time for some “die hard” volunteers. However, when possible and as organizations pivoted their programs, numerous

people stepped up to volunteer in new ways, thus contributing to their society in a very real way during a crisis.Volunteers provided distanced rides to appointments and friendly phoning services. They dropped off cheery gift baskets for special events (Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s Day). They grocery shopped, made meals, picked up prescriptions, and wrote cards to send out to isolated folks. Now that COVID-19 is on the wane, many organizations are increasing their programs and services for seniors. With the reopening of activities, there is an increasing need for volunteers for a wonderful array of opportunities.
