‘Safe rooms’ raise concern
BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
Big Star Sandwich Company Ltd. is busier than its owners ever dreamed their new business would be. Clint Bondzuk and Julie Rule opened the sandwich shop at 705 12th St. in March. Big Star’s sandwiches and vintage brands of pop are attracting customers from the local area, Annacis Island, Metrotown and beyond. “We wanted to be in an underdog area,” Bondzuk said about the 12th Street location. “Price was one of the bigger factors.” Like many of the small businesses operating on 12th Street, Big Star will be participating in the 12th Street Music Festival. The street will be closed to traffic between Sixth and 10th avenues for the annual festival that’s taking place on Sunday, July 28 from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. “It is starting to look really exciting,” said Amber Anderson, president of the West End Business Association. “This is going to be the biggest one we have had so far.” In past years, the 12th Street Music Festival has been held on the B.C. Day long weekend, but it’s been changed to accommodate many people who wanted to participate but go away for the long weekend. “It’s incredible, the response I have been getting,” Anderson said. “They are still calling.” The festival will feature ◗Festival Page 9

Longtime school district critic Wendy Harris says the district shouldn’t be placing special needs students in “safe rooms,” and she fears that recent cuts to support staff in local schools will mean the spaces will be used more often as a way to manage distressed children. Harris, whose son has special needs, hasn’t had first-hand experience with the isolation rooms, but through her work on the district’s parent advisory council, she’s heard from parents whose children have been placed in the small rooms during outbursts. One family in particular has expressed concerns about their son – a New Westminster Secondary School student – being placed in the isolation room for lengthy stretches and has been trying to have their situation resolved for three years, Harris said. “The one at NWSS looks like it’s about a five-by-five (room),” Harris said. The district recently laid off 27 special education staff members for the coming school year, and Harris worries the cuts will mean more special needs students will be without support and, as a result,

Resident proposes plan to save Pattullo BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
As TransLink continues its closures of the Pattullo Bridge for weekend repairs, a New Westminster resident is suggesting a way to extend the life of the bridge and avoid construction of a new crossing. TransLink is closing the Pattullo Bridge to all vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists for three weekends this summer so it can carry out maintenance and repairs on the aging bridge between 9 p.m. on Fridays and 3 a.m. on Mondays. The first closure took place July 20 and 21, with additional work being done Aug. 10 and 11 and Aug. 24 and 25. According to TransLink, the closures will allow crews to repair sections of the concrete deck and repave portions of the 76-year-old bridge. The closures will also give TransLink a chance to review the condition of the bridge’s driving surface and make any necessary repairs. The closures come at a time when New Westminster resident Justin Ball is proposing a method of construction for rehabilitating the Pattullo Bridge that could help TransLink avoid the cost of building a new bridge and eliminate the impacts a new alignment could have on local residents. He recently met with Mayor Wayne Wright and city engineering director Jim Lowrie to discuss a fabric formwork technology that’s been used successfully on structures in other parts of the world. “This is a very cheap and immediate fix, instead of the grief of building a new bridge,” said Ball, who is familiar with the process from work he did in England 20 years ago. “I am hoping the city takes it forward. I am hoping there will be some public interest.” Wright said he will be taking the information to TransLink, as one of the bridge options being considered is rehabilitation. “The information he brought forward, I thought was quite interesting,” he said. “It’s for the reclamation and fixing of old bridges in Europe.” Wright suspects TransLink’s engineers

I like historical things. It is a piece of New Westminster. It is repairable.” Ball couldn’t say whether or not the remedy he was proposing would address seismic issues related to the bridge, saying that was something that engineers would
have to consider. Wright recently met with the province’s new Transportation Minister Todd Stone to discuss transportation issues such as the Pattullo Bridge. TransLink has worked with the cities of New Westminster and Surrey to develop 25 alternatives for the Pattullo Bridge and held community consultation sessions to get input from residents. The 1937 Pattullo Bridge doesn’t meet current seismic standards or roadway guidelines
for lane widths and curvature, according to TransLink. After consulting with the community in June, TransLink planned to combine the public information with the technical and financial considerations, and identify options that should be studied further. TransLink expects to consult with community members in the fall, with the goal of identifying one or two alternatives that the cities and TransLink can agree on.
New West not interested in incinerator BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
New Westminster has no interest in being home to a wasteto-energy facility, says Mayor Wayne Wright. Wright, a member of Metro Vancouver’s Zero Waste committee, said Metro Vancouver was issuing a request for proposals July 19 to determine who is interested in dealing with the region’s garbage. “We don’t have any interest. We don’t have any land that we
can give them,” Wright told The Record. “I am always interested in it because I want to know where it is going and how it’s going to be, and if it’s on our border, I want to know. Right now, we haven’t discussed it in council or anything.” In May, Metro Vancouver issued a notice to landowners that it was preparing to enter the potential site identification stage of a new waste-to-energy capacity procurement process. In the past, the former Canfor site in the Braid industrial area
was suggested as a potential site for a waste-to-energy facility. “We know that the site in New Westminster was the preferred site,” Wright said. “Now it is not up for sale and it’s not ready to be used. The port authority, they are the ones that have control of it, not us.” Wright said some business people have already made it known they will be replying to Metro Vancouver’s request for proposals. “The RFP that’s coming out is for people that are interest-
ed in doing this. Now there’s a whole bunch of them,” he said. “I think there’s 10 proponents of different methods and means of doing waste to energy. They are in region and out of region. They are towards the valley, south of the river, north of the river and on the island – and we are not in there. New Westminster hasn’t had anything to do with it at all.” According to Metro Vancouver, after achieving its waste diversion goal of 70 per cent in 2015 and aiming for 80 per cent by 2020,
the region will have about 700,000 tonnes of waste that needs to be managed. The region’s garbage currently goes to an incinerator in south Burnaby and a landfill in Cache Creek. “I can tell you, there will be nobody who knows more about that thing than I will,” Wright said. “If it is going to come, if there is interest in it, I want to be fully informed so we can talk intelligently of why we don’t want it here or if it’s coming, what do we do.” ◗Incinerator Page 9

Advocate opposes use of isolation rooms BY NIKI HOPE REPORTER
nhope@royalcityrecord.com
Should the New Westminster school district ban the practice of putting special needs students in isolation rooms? The answer is yes, according to Faith Bodnar, executive director of Inclusion B.C. Her agency recently launched an online survey on the use of isolation rooms, which the district calls “quiet” rooms, to house disruptive or distressed students with special needs.
“It’s based on our concern and awareness that these kinds of methods are being used without any consistent policy, often without adequate training. There’s no tracking by the ministry of the use of these types of procedures,” Bodnar said about the survey, which closed on Friday, July 19. The survey is non-scientific and is meant to further Inclusion B.C.’s goal to require schools to document and report the use of restraint, seclusion and other aversive measures to the Ministry of Education, and to create gov-
ernment regulation that prohibits the use of seclusion in all B.C. schools. “We’ve been aware for a few years, and very, very concerned about the use of these kind of strategies,” she said about the use of the isolation rooms, also known as safe rooms, which are used in many districts throughout the Lower Mainland and beyond. Often they are used for special needs students who may be disruptive, or, alternatively, they are used for students who may

in discussions establishing usage of that room,” he said. The longtime trustee and Surrey schoolteacher said he is unaware – other than Harris – of any complaints or any concerns that have been brought forward to the board of education in the last couple of years. “As far as I know, those rooms are only used in conjunction with an IEP. If they’re not, if they are used outside of an IEP, there would be some concern,” he said. “Silly” is the word Ewen used to describe Harris’ concern that the isolation rooms would be used more frequently because of staff cuts. “It can’t be used that way,” he said. “It can’t be used to warehouse kids.” Janet Grant, the district’s director of instruction, agreed, saying the rooms are used to help students, mostly those on the autism spectrum – whose sensory systems become overloaded, and they become distressed. “It’s all about calming them,” Grant said. “We have had a situation where students want to go in the room.” The spaces are used by a small number of students, she said. Grant couldn’t say how many schools in the
district had quiet rooms, because the students will come and go and move on to new schools and the need for having the rooms changes as a result, she said. “Just to put it into perspective, we don’t use these spaces with a lot of students. It’s only an exceptional few,” she said, noting that at New Westminster Secondary School – which has about 2,000 students – there are five students who access what the district calls “personal workspaces.” Grant said she’s only experienced one parent who opposed having their
child placed in the space. She didn’t want to comment on the situation because it would be “easily identifiable,” given that it was just one family, she said. Grant said the district’s “primary goal” is to have all students fully integrated into the classroom, but that’s not always achievable. “The whole purpose of these spaces is to provide a quiet environment where we can support the students in calming themselves, so they can then go on with their day,” she said. As for the potential increased use of the quiet
rooms because of staff cuts, Grant said the students who have complex issues will continue to be “fully supported.” Superintendent John Woudzia agreed, saying, “The personal workspace isn’t the intervention unto itself. It’s not where the students’ program takes place at the beginning of the day and the end. It’s one feature of an overall inclusive IEP.” In 2009, after a review, the Vancouver school board opted to continue the use of “safe rooms,” but with clear rules and monitoring of their use, a 2009 Sun article states.

Quayside residents wait for rail yard ruling BY THERESA MCMANUS REPORTER tmcmanus@royalcityrecord.com
The Quayside Community Board is keeping its fingers crossed that theCanadianTransportation Authority will help residents enjoy a good night’s rest. Brian Allen, chair of the board’s rail committee, said the nighttime noise issue is currently being considered by the Canadian Transportation Agency. Residents are hoping for a “fair and balanced” decision from the agency. “It’s been a long and interesting journey,” he told the board earlier this year. “I started this about 10 years ago to deal with this issue and that culminated in the summer of 2008, when the (Quayside Community Board) filed a complaint with the Canada Transportation Agency.” The Canadian Transportation Agency then helped the board reach a mediated settlement with the rail companies operating in the rail yard adjacent to their Quayside neighbourhood. The settlement sought to reduce and, ultimately, eliminate unreasonable noise and vibrations being generated by nighttime operations. “The railways did not honour their obligations,” Allen said. In addition to being a member of the city’s railway panel, Puchmayr has also been appointed as a member of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities’ railway committee’s dispute resolution subcommittee. “I feel very comfortable that dealing with it at the FCM level with the Canadian Railway Association is the way to go,” he said. “Those things can spread out and affect everybody.”

According to recently released figures from Statistics Canada, B.C. is tied with Manitoba for last spot with a child poverty rate that rose from 10.5 per cent in 2010 to 11.3 per cent in 2011. That means 93,000 children living in poverty – up from 87,000 in 2010. For children with lone-parent mothers, the poverty rate jumped from 16.4 per cent to 24.6 per cent, or 27,000 children. Do scandals really matter in B.C.? IN THE HOUSE
D
KEITH BALDREY
o political scandals really matter when all is said and done? It’s a fair and relevant question to pose after the surprise result of the May provincial election. The B.C. Liberals, as scandal-plagued as any long-serving government, actually increased their majority over the NDP. For weeks preceding the election campaign, the NDP had raked the B.C. Liberal government over the coals for a number of controversies and outright scandals, the most notorious being the so-called “ethnic memo” affair that saw the government caught red-handed using public resources to further the political interests of the B.C. Liberal Party. The ethnic memo sparked a crisis of leadership within the party, as Premier Christy Clark had to beat back a growing chorus of disenchantment in her caucus. Her party looked spent as it entered the campaign, but then the NDP did a strange thing: it decided not to even mention the scandal a single time in the campaign. But now, as the legislative session enters its final week, the
NDP has become obsessed by new wrinkles to the old scandal. It is determined to breathe new life into the controversy, even though the individuals most heavily involved in the scandal have left government (the one exception is Richmond MLA John Yap, who lost his cabinet post but was re-elected). Given the scandal did not work to the NDP’s benefit in trying to win the election, one has to wonder what the motivation is now behind the decision to make the scandal pretty well the sole focus of the NDP caucus. It can be argued the NDP is simply doing the job of the Opposition, which is holding the government accountable for its actions. And there’s certainly no question the B.C. Liberals engaged in improper conduct (their own probe reached that conclusion before the election) and as much information about that malfeasance should be aired in public. But another theory has emerged in some media commentaries, and it has to do with NDP leader Adrian Dix’s future. The theory is this: Dix is leading the latest charge on the ethnic memo scandal in order to shore up his chances of remaining the leader of his party. Dix faces a critical vote at the party’s convention in November, and he needs to re-establish his credibility with an understandably furious party membership upset about losing an election
Use billboard money wisely
Dear Editor:
Re: Digital billboards expected to bring in $25M, The Record, July 12. Making financing for such useful facilities as Canada Games Pool and Massey Theatre dependent on revenue from digital billboards – and delaying these projects until such funds accumulate – is not the best policy for city. As Coun. Jonathan Cote pointed out, the council is aware of the importance of these facilities, their attendants, benefits to residents and value to community. The pool, for example, besides being extremely popular, is the only recreational facility that makes the city a profit, I heard. A recent city survey placed them on top of the priority list. They are also aging, already overdue for major renovations, maybe even replacement. Financing methods for this work shall reflect ◗NDP Page 7 this priority.
Despite council’s hopes, reliance on billboard money – just as past reliance on revenue from longdeparted casino boat – will not provide these “musthave” facilities with “stable, long-term financing.” What if drivers choose to keep their eyes on the road rather than watch ads? What if courts or government outlaw such billboards after – and preferably before – a major accident? What if revenue drops? Will the sign company cover the shortfall? And what if the sign company goes out of business? If the billboard payments are indeed “as good as money in the bank,” let the city ask the sign company to discount this contract. Instead of separate payments every year over the next 23 years, the city will get a lump sum. This sum will be somewhat less than the promised $25 million (to account for interest expense to the sign company), but for New Westminster, it will provide a real guarantee the funds will be available when needed. ◗Money Page 7

Okanagan alumni sought Dear Editor:
Personally, I doubt this will happen. On other hand, I believe, the Columbia Street festive lights – and similar “niceto-have” projects, like an extra entrance to Pier Park, or pedestrian bridge across Fraser River, or greenway on Seventh Avenue, or Front Street parkade revitalization – are more suitable for financing from digital billboard payments. And, of course, no debate about New Westminster’s financial situation may overlook the looming mountain of debt coming from the business tower. Last time I checked two weeks ago, this “air parcel” on top of Anvil civic centre was still on the market. As Coun. Betty McIntosh mentioned, the recent survey revealed that debt management is the second-highest preference for city residents as far as spending their tax dollars is concerned. The council’s priorities should better reflect this preference, and when they do not, residents are welcome to make another reminder @WeVoteNW.
Okanagan College is reaching out to former students and employees of the B.C. Vocational School, Okanagan College and Okanagan University College as we prepare to celebrate our 50th birthday. Just as Beatlemania was sweeping the shores of North America, then-premier of British Columbia W.A.C. Bennett officially opened the doors to the B.C. Vocational School on Sept. 28, 1963. Since then, our institution has delivered valuable training to tens of thousands of students and helped communities throughout the region with economic, social and cultural development. We know our former students and friends have spread throughout the world, and we’re inviting them home to the Okanagan for a fun, informal party we’re planning on Sept. 27, 2013. We’re also asking them to connect with us electronically to relate stories from their time at Okanagan College, and to nominate those people who have made a difference. Visit www.okanagan.bc.ca/50.

they were convinced they were going to win. He’s certainly earned some media coverage with this latest strategy, although not nearly as much as he got back in the spring over the same issue. But the B.C. Liberals are definitely not reacting the same way as they did back then, as Clark’s leadership problems have completely evaporated and the caucus’ gloom has been replaced with euphoria over the prospect of at least four more years in power. The other reality is that we are in midsummer, and I suspect the public has pretty well tuned out politicians of all stripes and will remain tuned out until after Labour Day. So, do political scandals really matter?
In this case, the key question is will this latest turn on the ethnic memo scandal matter to the NDP members who will vote in November on whether to hold a leadership contest. Will they be impressed by Dix’s performance in the legislature? Or have they also tuned him out, and no matter how effective his criticism is of the B.C. Liberals in this matter, aren’t willing to forgive him for seemingly fumbling the ball on the election’s goal line? The NDP lost the election largely because it wasn’t trusted on economic issues, and the scandals that plagued the B.C. Liberals for years turned out not to matter much with voters. But for the sake of his leadership, Dix had better hope that political scandals
do matter, at least to those who hold the future of his leadership in their hands. Any doubts the NDP remains closely linked to organized labor have been dispelled by the makeup of the panel that will review the party’s election loss. Four of the five members are from the labour movement, and perhaps more tellingly, they are from the public sector union side. For a party that supposedly prides itself on diversity, it’s odd it would select such a narrowly defined group of people to analyze the most disastrous election result in its history. Or perhaps it’s not so odd, and simply reflects the fact that public sector unions are the dominant force within the party. Keith Baldrey is chief political reporter for Global B.C.

Many reasons women stay despite abuse Lack of safe places to go still number 1 reason: survey BY CAYLEY DOBIE REPORTER cdobie@royalcityrecord.com
A recent survey by the Canadian Women’s Foundation reports not having a safe place to go is the number 1 reason why women stay in abusive relationships. But New Westminster officer and domestic violence unit detective, Shari Gulliver, says that’s only part of the issue. “I think that it’s reasonably accurate, but I think it’s a small part of a much larger picture,” she says. “There are a lot of reasons (why) women stay in abusive relationships.” The survey indicates that along with no safe place to go, women also stay with abusive partners because of children that
may be involved or economic dependency. “(These) are definitely some reasons why, but (the survey) didn’t touch on some of the cultural issues, the fear of police, fear of reporting,” she says. In Gulliver’s experience, many women are afraid to speak with police about abuse or report it because they don’t know what options or resources are available to them, if they choose to leave the abuser. But Gulliver says that the New Westminster Police Department’s partnership with Family Services of Greater Vancouver helps bridge the gap between police and abused women. “That’s what makes this specialized program work so well. The counsellor is able to do all this outreach work with the victim and take their time with them, build a relationship of trust,” she said.
There are two counsellors working with Gulliver – Andrea Wright and Reena Singh – and together they make up the domestic violence response team and elder abuse unit. When a relationship between either Wright or Singh and the victim is established, that’s when they provide the victim with the different options available. “We would assist in locating a transition house for them or a shelter, we would also give them things like contact phone numbers for Victim Link B.C. where they can get information,” she says. Gulliver says the unit’s goal is to ensure the women are safe and have a plan in place, in case the situation with their spouses escalates. “Really it’s about empowering the woman, as to what she wants to see happen, all the while, from beginning to end of that

relationship, working on safety issues,” she says. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, 67 per cent of people in the country know a woman who has been physically or sexually abused. To report domestic violence, contact Gulliver, Wright or Singh through the police department’s main line at 604-525-5411.

Drivers headed east along Eighth Avenue in New Westminster were rerouted July 2, after a car lost control at York Street and East Eighth Avenue, crashing into several parked vehicles. Around 11 p.m. on July 2, a grey 2004 Buick Century travelling west on East Eighth Avenue lost control and collided with a parked trailer near York Street. “The initial collision caused the vehicle to spin and strike another parked vehicle and a city parking sign, which was ripped from the ground,” the police report stated.

awesome, the sets are awesome, it’s just – awesome!” she gushes. “Meeting all the people has been really cool. Everybody here is really fun.” The teens all hope to see people turn out in force for the show, and they’re quick to offer up reasons why seeing their production of Hamlet is a good idea. “It’s probably the only chance you’ll get to see a gender-swapped Hamlet,” Sofia points out. “You get to see people go insane, that’s always fun,” Emily notes. And, as Daisy points out, it may be abridged, it may be outdoors, but, after all,
it’s still Shakespeare. “It’s just good,” she says firmly. “It’s just a really, really good play.” ◗ Hamlet takes place on the Performance Works outdoor stage at 1218 Cartwright St. on Granville Island. In case of rain, the show moves inside. Bring a blanket or sweater, as the evenings can be cool. It runs Monday to Saturday from July 26 to Aug. 10, with nightly shows at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free, but with limited bleacher seating, reservations are recommended. You can reserve in advance for $5, or $6 with a blanket and cushion. For more, call the box office at 604-6856217 or see www.carouseltheatre.ca.

oonrakers will be serving its last Maple Moon and Foghorn burgers as the longtime business prepares to close its doors. The pub, located at 525 Seventh St., is set to close on Monday, Aug. 5. Moonrakers’ owner, JAK Group, has sold the pub, which will be closed for renovations and reopen as the Union Jack Public House in September. “It’s been an honour to serve the New Westminster neighbourhood, as well as visitors to the area, over the past four years,” said Mike McKee. “All of us at Moonrakers are very pleased to have met so many great people, and we are very proud of what we have accomplished together.” Moonrakers opened in the uptown neighbourhood in 1979 under the ownership of Phil Potter. The pub was named after a Potter family pub
in England, but refers to a folk story set in the time when smuggling was a tangible industry in rural England, according to a press release. Since purchasing Moonrakers in November 2009, McKee has directed a number of community initiatives, including a Christmas Day meal for local seniors, a send-kidsto-camp luncheon for Fraserside Community Services and several fundraisers for the B.C. Hospitality Foundation. McKee and staff are grateful to the many guests and regulars who have visited Moonrakers, and invite them to drop by before the doors close on Aug. 5 at 11 p.m. A customer appreciation night is being held on Saturday, Aug. 3 from 4 p.m. (till late) and includes a burger and beer special, and DJ, as well as prizes. After undergoing extensive renovations, Union Jack Public House will reopen at the location in September.

Richard McDonald’s love of family and friends shines through in a recently published memoir. Members of the Royal
City Writers worked with residents of the Cliff Block to tell their life stories. My Story, which is McDonald’s story as told to Heather Ray Bax, begins in the years before he lived at Woodlands, his residency at Woodlands from 1952 to 1962, and the years since. “I wanted people to know about what it was like in Woodlands,” he said. McDonald’s story includes specific chapters on Remembering Woodlands and The Special Ladies in My Life. McDonald is selling copies of the soft-cover book for $15. “I’m quite active. I have a lot of friends because I have a fantastic attitude. I’ve been through a lot, and I’ve persevered,” he said. “For 10 years I’ve been with a self-advocate group called the B.C. People First Society. This group takes on issues for other self-advocates who need help. I also work for the Burnaby NOW newspaper.” To buy a copy of McDonald’s book, email richmcdo17@gmail.com. INCREDIBLE RESULTS FROM THE BURNABY NOW “A lot of people saw the photo and I had friends and family complimenting me. Guests were lined up and waiting for a free table to be seated. The restaurant was hopping the first day and we have been busy ever since, our reservations have also increased. Some guests came back a second time and brought friends and family because they thought it was such a great offer. I am very happy with the results from the advertorial ad in the monthly Dine Out Burnaby, and will definitely do it again!” Photo contributed/THE RECORD

Royal City couple gets married with Pride BY SANDRA THOMAS REPORTER editorial@royalcityrecord.com
Ten years ago, Randy Brooks first asked his longtime partner Michael Jacobs to marry him. “But I always thought, what’s the point?” said Jacobs. “But then this past New Year’s Day we were having coffee and he asked me again and I said, ‘With all my heart.’” To make up for lost time the couple, who moved to New Westminster five years ago, is planning a public wedding complete with 32 attendants. To demonstrate their love to the world, the nuptials will take place Aug. 4 at the corner of Robson and Denman streets in the middle of the annual Pride Parade. “We decided to get married right on the street in the middle of Pride, and we’re going to exchange rings as the parade goes by,” said Jacobs. “We’re going to have a huge hot-pink banner on the fence behind us that says, ‘Two hearts, one love. M and R Aug. 4, 2013.’ It’s going to be spectacular.” The couple met 18 years ago at the Royal Hotel on
Granville Street, which has since closed, and as Jacobs described it, it was love at first sight. “We just looked at one another, and that was it,” said Jacobs. The wedding MC will be the couple’s close friend Vancouver performer Chris Bolton, also known as his drag persona Conni Smudge. In keeping with the predicted weather, Jacobs and Brooks will wear camel pants, Hawaiian-style shirts and Panama hats. “We have family coming in from across the country, including my mother,” said Jacobs. “We’ll be giving Pride bags to all of our guests, including my mom and aunt, that will include banana-flavoured condoms.” The couple will then move the wedding party over to the iconic Sylvia Hotel on Gilford Avenue for a Champagne reception. In keeping with a traditional wedding, the couple will follow up by boarding the CruiseyT Pride Go Go cruise ship. Jacobs noted the recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling striking down the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA)
did not play into the couple’s decision to get married this month. “It’s just a nice coincidence,” he said. Darryl Persello of Vancouver-based 2 Dears and a Queer wedding planners said the abolition of DOMA has had a negative effect on his business. “We’ve taken a huge hit,” said Persello. “We usually do between 10 and 15 weddings a year and this year we’ve done three.” 2 Dears and a Queer launched 10 years ago in response to the needs of American and out-of-province, same-sex couples who couldn’t get legally married at home but could enjoy an official ceremony in B.C. Persello noted until this year, the company’s express wedding package had been popular with American couples who wanted to book a weekend getaway to get married. “The Express Wedding Package is perfect for a shotgun wedding,” said Persello. “Think of it as a Vegas-style wedding in Vancouver.” Persello added that while pursuing straight couples as clients is an option, he’s not

A lot of times the parents don’t attend, and that makes everything a lot easier to stickhandle.” –Vancouver Courier

Salmonbellies hang on to shred of hope BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The New Westminster Salmonbellies need help from Burnaby to have a chance of a berth into the Western Lacrosse Association playoffs. With just two games remaining, the senior A ’Bellies will likely need a pair of wins – most importantly the Thursday home date versus the Adanacs – that would give them the season series against Coquitlam in the case of a tie. Last week, New West got inspired performances from rookie Logan Schuss and goalie Neil Tyacke in a 13-8 victory over Burnaby
at Queen’s Park Arena last Thursday. But the following night in Victoria, New West took a step back following a 15-6 loss to the runner-up Shamrocks. “We’re going into every game one game at a time,” said Schuss, who counted five goals and three assists in Thursday’s key win. Schuss was not in the lineup in Victoria. Tyacke stopped 54 shots for his fifth win at home. In Victoria, Curtis Hodgson and team scoring leader Jordan McBride, with his team-best 30th goal of the season, got the visitors out to an early lead. But the ’Rocks closed
the period with four unanswered goals, and added six more in the middle period to lead 10-4 heading into the final frame. The loss in the Capital City left New Westminster in sixth place with a record of 6-9-1, but just two wins out of a possible fourth place. “We just have to accept it as it comes,” added Schuss. “We’re preparing very hard – mentally and physically – for these games.” Against Burnaby, McBride and rookie righthander Keegan Bal joined Ilija Gajic, all with fourpoint nights. McBride created some separation in an otherwise
close contest late in the second period, sparking a four-goal rally that proved the difference in the contest. Gajic got the eventual game-winner on a delayed penalty 29 seconds into the final frame. Rookie Richard Lachlan also potted his first WLA goal as a Salmonbellie later in the period. Tonight (Wednesday), New Westminster faces a tough test against the league champion Thunder at the Langley Events Centre. Win or lose, the Salmonbellies must win their final home game of the season against the Coquitlam Adanacs on
Thursday to have any chance of making the post season. Both games are 7:45 p.m. starts. The Burnaby Lakers locked up one of the playoff spots, outlasting the slumping Maple Ridge Burrards 10-9 at the Bill Copeland Sports Centre last Friday. The Lakers held a 10-6 advantage on former junior ’Bellie Justin Salt’s second breakaway goal in the game. League scoring leader and also a former New West junior, Curtis Dickson, sparked a lastminute Burrards’ rally, tallying two of his four markers in the final minute of play.
Record breaker makes world junior team BY TOM BERRIDGE SPORTS EDITOR tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
Stefan Milosevic made a statement at the Canadian summer senior nationals swim meet in Pointe Claire, Que., last week. The 17-year-old Hyack club swimmer opened the four-day competition with a thrilling firstplace win the men’s 200-metre freestyle final. Milosevic’s time of 1:51.18 was just under a second away from Brian Johns’ 2000 provincial record of 1:50.34. The following day in the preliminary heats, the Cariboo Hill Secondary student set a new pro-
vincial boys’ 15/17 record, bettering former world champion Brent Hayden’s age-group mark with a 51.41 time in the 100m free en route to a silver-medal finish in the final. “It was a pretty exciting 200, with four guys coming in all within four-tenths of a second, and Stefan got his hand on the wall first,” said Hyack head coach Mark Bottrill. “It’s been the mid1990s since the last time something like that has happened. “For a club like the Hyacks to get a medal at the seniors for a male age-class swimmer, it’s pretty amazing.” Milosevic outtouched 23-year-
old University of Calgary swimmer David Woodman for the 200m gold medal in the sprint to the finish. In the 100m free, Milosevic was just one-tenth of a second behind Oakville’s Bryce KwiechienDelaney in a tight final, where the top-eight swimmers were all under 52 seconds. Later in the day, Milosevic also made the final in the men’s 400m individual medley. Milosevic placed in a tie for fifth place in the overall men’s high point standings. Two other B.C. swimmers posted a win on the first day of competition.
Heather MacLean won the women’s 200m free in 2:01.13, while 15-year-old Emily Overholt took the national title in the women’s 200m butterfly in a time of 2:13.76. For Milosevic and Overholt, their wins secured each of them a spot on Canada’s world junior championships team, which will be held in Dubai in late August. Hyacks’ Mia Bottrill won the B final in the women’s 200m butterfly on Day 1. Sara Whelan placed 13th in the women’s 1,500m open freestyle on the opening day of competition. Whelan also competed in the 800m free.
The New Westminster Salmonbellies saved their best for last at the B.C. Lacrosse provincial bantam A1 championships in Delta last weekend. The bantam ’Bellies finished in third place following a resounding 11-1 win over Langley in the consolation final at the South Delta rec centre on Sunday. Earlier in the day, the 12player New Westminster team was soundly beaten 8-1 by eventual silver medalist Coquitlam in an 8 a.m. semifinal matchup. “It was bad timing. We just didn’t play well that morning,” said Salmonbellies head coach Rich Catton. League runner-up Ridge Meadows downed Coquitlam 11-4 in the provincial final. “It was back and forth, even the gold-medal game was a surprising score, too,” said Catton. The provincials were a close contest between the top five teams, including Juan de Fuca, which New West edged 6-5 in overtime in its opening game of the competition. That win proved key to New West moving on after placing fourth in the round robin. New West also had a hiccup in its opening game against Coquitlam, blowing a 6-4 lead in the final period in an 8-6 loss. Second-year players Nick Hannay, Eric Maas and fair play winner Will Malcom earned game MVPs for New West, while first-year keeper Johnny Edin also claimed a game star. Malcom was also named New West’s team all-star at the provincials. Catton, known for his hard-nose play with the senior A Salmonbellies, won the fair play coach award. It is the third fair play award as coach for Catton, including one such honour in field lacrosse. “It’s my third time,” said Catton. “I think the coaches are just making fun of me now.”

Juniors one win away from berth in the Minto Cup tberridge@royalcityrecord.com
The goal of a Minto Cup berth is within grasp of the New Westminster Salmonbellies. The junior A Salmonbellies can earn a spot in the B.C. Junior Lacrosse League final with a victory over the Langley Thunder (played Tuesday after Record deadlines). New West took a stranglehold on its best-of-five semifinal series, besting the Langley Thunder 9-5 at the Langley Events Centre last week. Similar to the Salmonbellies’ 12-6 win in Game 1, New West jumped out to an early first-period lead. Anthony Malcom got things started, scoring his first of two goals, in the opening two minutes of the game. Eli McLaughlin potted a pair back-toback to close the period with the visitors holding a 4-1 advantage. New West remained in control despite being outshot 39-24 the rest of way. loss was a narrow 2-0 decision to White Rock/South Surrey. However, New Westminster’s season is far from over. The boys will be participating in a six-team, sevenday national invitational tournament in Val-d’Or, Que., later this month. the win, kicking out 43 Langley shots on goal. “We played well, our defence played well, and we limited their quality chances,” said Salmonbellies’ head coach Dan Perreault. McLaughlin and Quinn Smith led the junior ’Bellies with four points apiece. The New Westminster defence also held Langley sniper Reegan Comeault scoreless for a second straight game, blanking the talented playmaker in his own barn. It’s all part of the preparation for the post-season, said Perreault. “That’s what it’s all about at this time of the season – to play in the Minto Cup and to get there,” he said. If necessary, a Game 4 will be played in Langley on Thursday. A fifth tiebreaker would be settled on Sunday back at Queen’s Park at 4 p.m. In the other semifinal series, Coquitlam currently leads that one 2-0, with Game 3 set for Saturday at the Coquitlam Sports Centre, beginning at 3 p.m. If necessary, the series reverts back to Victoria on Sunday.

New West lost its opening game in a tight contest 10-7 to Little Mountain. The first-time District 6 champs rebounded with a 13-5 win over Beacon Hill and a 12-3 win over Layritz. This is the last phase of its 27-unit townhome project in Burnaby. For Fedorak, her new 1,300-squarefoot home means freedom. Prior to this, they lived in a crammed twobedroom apartment. Not the ideal situation for Scarlett, who has a rare genetic disease.
Their new home is wheelchair accessible, with wide doorways and halls, a ramp out front and a wheelchair-accessible bathroom. In addition, the family can sleep easy with an interest-free mortgage and payments that will never be more than 30 per cent of their household income. Their down payment was the 500hours of sweat equity they put in with Habitat for Humanity. Nearly 100 people, including Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan and acting Richmond Mayor Linda McPhail (Richmond is the next city Habitat for Humanity will build a townhome project), came out for the unveiling of the last 10 homes on Government Street. Stephanie Baker, who along with husband Mitch Baker own Karnak Pro Builder, was moved to tears watching the families check out their new homes. Baker has only thanks for the weekends their staff spent volunteering at the site to ensure the families could move in by late June. Also on hand was Jabin Saggu,
brighter
future
Vancouver store manager at Home Depot of Canada. Since 1996, Home Depot Canada Foundation employees have logged in 60,000 volunteer hours and contributed more than $4 million in cash and product donations. “It’s about creating a sustainable future for families across the country,” says Saggu. Nothing is possible without the tremendous support of community partners, donors and volunteers, says Tim Clark, CEO of Habitat for Humanity Greater Vancouver. “It gives us the power to change
lives for the better and end the cycle of poverty,” adds Clark. Over the years, Canada Mortgage and Housing (CMHC) has built a history of shared values with Habitat for Humanity. “We all pitched in to help landscape, build a children’s playground, plus we ensured that the six new townhomes were spic and span and move-in ready,” says Tom Siems, regional manager, Community Development, Communications and Marketing CMHC BC Region.
Another huge supporter of Habitat for Humanity is BC Housing CEO Shayne Ramsay. BC Housing sold the original Burnaby site at less than market value and provided interim mortgage financing. “The Province also provided a onetime grant of $125,000 for five townhomes on the Burnaby site,” adds Ramsay. This January, BC Housing provided a property on Ash Street in Richmond.
