We are delighted to present this, our first comprehensive sales catalogue of RA Editions.
The RA Editions programme publishes an ever-evolving collection of artworks specially commissioned from Royal Academicians and invited artists. The programme has built into a rich and varied compilation of works and generates valuable revenue for the RA, in particular the RA Schools.
This new catalogue brings together our current listings, featuring more than one hundred works. These include not only prints, but special publications, sculptures and more, all produced in limited editions. Each is a testament to the creativity and skill of the artists, printers, publishers and makers who produced them.
For anyone interested in discovering and purchasing contemporary art, all our editions are available to buy from the RA Shop online and Gallery X in Burlington House, as well as from a series of displays around the RA.
We can arrange framing and advise on any special requests you may have. You will find our contact details at the back of the catalogue; we would be happy to hear from you.
Please enjoy exploring and thank you for your support.

It’s fair to say, there is nowhere quite like the RA Schools. Established in 1769 at the centre of the Academy and today delivering a free, threeyear, postgraduate studio programme. Our students become part of a rare multigenerational community of visiting artists, lecturers and RA professors. As an independent art school and a charity committed to fine-art education, we can never say thank you enough to our many generous donors, sponsors, patrons and supporters.
As the newly appointed Keeper of the Royal Academy, I would like to take this opportunity to highlight the amount of collaboration that goes on inside the Schools as we strive towards self-sufficiency and so I am delighted to be able to introduce this catalogue of RA Editions. The RA Editions programme exemplifies the best kind of creative collaboration within the RA.
This wonderful enterprise originated with an idea from Eileen Cooper MBE RA (Keeper, 2011–2017), whose special talents for bringing people together and making things happen created a clever and simple conduit of mutual benefits. It was launched in 2009 with a series of etchings made within the Schools by Derek Boshier, with the works subsequently sold to raise money for the Schools. The earliest RA Editions include works made with Academicians Tracey Emin, Stephen Chambers, Vanessa Jackson, Phillip King, Chris Orr, Peter Freeth and Eileen Cooper.
Like many great ideas, RA Editions is a simple but effective concept. Through it, we are able to draw from a multi-generational roll call of RAs, students, graduates and associated artists, some of whom are invited into the Schools workshops to collaborate with our specialist workshop tutors. The range of creative options encourages opportunities for artists to explore new mediums and approaches with the added bonus of offering a platform for freedom and experimentation. Students working alongside the artists benefit from interactions and insights as each project unfolds in an open and mutually supportive environment.
Collaborations, drawing upon the expertise of the print-specialist tutors, are of pivotal importance in supporting artists to realise their creative ideas and perhaps equally important, are the many conversations that spontaneously arise in the workshops, corridors or over a shared lunch time. Such collaborations establish friendships and connections between artists, students and tutors in an informal network of shared experience and support.
I have witnessed at first hand the positive effect and renewed student interest in processes brought to life by visiting practitioners. Prints have been created in diverse mediums including woodcut, screenprint, etching, linocut, chine-collé, photography, digital as well as multiples utilising 3D print technology and casting processes.
I would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to the skill and patience in the production of our wonderful and affordable RA Editions.

Pio Abad
Pio Abad’s work mines alternative or repressed historical events and combines these with selected aesthetic phenomena. He investigates cultural events or personae, delving into their histories, drawing out associations between them and other moments, incidents or people.
In this print, an image that adorned the bedrooms of millions of teenage boys in the 1970s – that of pin-up star Farrah Fawcett-Majors – is deconstructed to create an iconoclastic artwork operating across a range of registers.
Produced in a limited edition of 30, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Norman Ackroyd RA
Norman Ackroyd CBE RA immerses himself in the wilderness of the landscape to paint and etch, creating intensely atmospheric work.
Presented here is an RA Edition print and two Special Edition publications.
This limited edition work was first shown in an exhibition of prints to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018. A sugarlift aquatint, the piece boasts a technique of etching that gives the image a wash-like quality.
Produced as an edition of 90, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
Estuary captures the view across the Stour Estuary, a body of water that borders two counties.
Depicted from Manningtree on the Essex side of the estuary, the scene is viewed across the water looking north towards Suffolk. The location is about a mile downriver from Flatford Mill in Suffolk, where Constable produced many of his greatest works.
The etching plate used to print this work was made in Ackroyd’s studio in Bermondsey, London, from drawings he had made at the site.

A Line in the Water is a unique collaboration between Royal Academician Norman Ackroyd and the eminent Scottish poet Douglas Dunn. Reproductions of 80 prints are interleaved with 15 poems, including ‘Working with Norman’, based on Ackroyd and Dunn’s visit to the most northerly point of the British Isles, the Muckle Flugga lighthouse.
Each book in this edition of 125 is accompanied by a copper-plate etching produced in Ackroyd’s Bermondsey studio with the assistance of the artist Niamh Clancy. McDara’s Church depicts a medieval Christian church located off County Galway in Ireland. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
A Shetland Notebook contains 39 watercolours selected from various journeys to the edges of the Shetland Islands in the spring and summer of 2012. Back in his Bermondsey studio, with the assistance of artist Niamh Clancy, Ackroyd uses these studies made en plein air as a foundation for creating beautiful monochrome prints.
Each book in this limited edition of 75 is accompanied by an etching, The Noup of Noss. Depicting the highest cliff on Shetland’s east coast, this print has the unmistakable vantage point of an artist painting from the water. Each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Georg Baselitz Hon RA
Georg Baselitz Hon RA re-energises the tradition of selfportraiture with Farewell Bill
This electrifying piece is a direct homage to the gestural figures of Willem de Kooning, whose primal paintings Baselitz encountered as a student in 1958.
Baselitz works instinctively and with a watercolour-like fluidity. Consistent with his established formal vocabulary, which acts to disrupt the painted subject visually and symbolically, the artist portrays himself upside down.

Céline Baumann
Céline Baumann is a French landscape architect based in Basel. Her eponymous studio operates in the fields of urbanism, landscape architecture and exhibition. She aims to create dynamic open spaces, informed by the interactive ecology between people and nature.
How different would our world be if nature took power and had a voice? Would nature be better at tackling issues of race, gender, normativity, inclusivity, ecology and climate change than we are? These are the questions this highly speculative piece aims to bring to the fore.

Produced as an edition of 80, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
Bays’ recent work focuses on desire as motivational force and something also open to manipulation.
Containing both abstract and figurative elements, her painting is characterised by spontaneous painterly gesture, bold lines and an affecting use of colour.

Basil Beattie RA
Basil Beattie RA’s dynamic limited edition screenprint celebrates the Academy’s 2016 Abstract Expressionism exhibition.
Broken Promises relates to a painting by Beattie of the same name and features his characteristic ‘stair’ motif. Beattie describes the image as having ‘psychological and emotional weight’, citing the landmark Abstract Expressionism exhibitions of the late 1950s, which profoundly influenced him at the time.
Printed with oil-based inks at Advanced Graphics London, Beattie’s limited palette of black, red and grey lends this work strength and impact.

Rana Begum RA
Colour, light and space are at play in this vibrant screenprint by Royal Academician Rana Begum.
This edition grew from an ongoing series of spray paintings Begum has been developing over several years. Initially inspired by the paper used to test spray cans in the studio, the paintings contribute to the artist’s continued exploration into transparency, colour interaction and repetition. The result is an organic layering of colour and form that marks a departure from Begum’s previous language of ordered geometry and minimalism.
Adapting these paintings into screenprints, introduces order and intentionality into this process, pushing the work in a new direction Print 94 continues an ongoing dialogue between order and chaos, the accidental and the intentional, that lies at the heart of Begum’s practice.
Published as an edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist and presented in a portfolio. Printed in the RA Schools with printmaker Leigh Clarke.

Sebastian Bergne
British designer Sebastian Bergne is renowned for making everyday objects special with his essential and human approach to design.
This multi-faceted edition by Bergne explores a single sheet of paper as an object more than a surface. Exploring both sides of the page, the boundaries are pushed to the extreme; piercing and extending beyond the edge of the print.
Working with the RA Schools, one side of this work is screen-printed with glowing, ombré colour. On the other side, a series of digitally cut incisions pierce the surface of the paper. This allows parts of the work to be folded forward to form a powerful, multi-dimensional piece referencing the Sun.
Produced in a limited edition of 20, each piece is signed and numbered by the artist and presented in an RA Edition portfolio box.

Charlie Billingham
Charlie Billingham often produces paintings, prints and site-responsive installations using expanded approaches to painting which reference the history of the British satirical print. Untitled is a continuation of this practice.
Billingham’s distinctly anachronistic references are merged and layered with passages of abstract and decorative painting. Other linear fragments hint at contemporary cartoon culture and a playful positioning of both historical and modern props.
Produced as an edition of 125, each print is signed and numbered by the artist. This print is one of a suite of four small-scale works produced by RA Schools graduates to celebrate the opening of the Keeper’s House.
Other works in the suite by Adham Faramawy, Michael O’Reilly and Nancy Milner are also available.

Hélène Binet
Hélène Binet is a photographer renowned for making images that express an intimate experience of architecture. Her studies are not only a representation of her subject but a distinct re-staging of a building, in relation to a specific time and its surroundings.
This characterful limited edition print celebrates the Light Lines: The Architectural Photographs of Hélène Binet exhibition at the Royal Academy. In the photograph, captured during a visit to Saint Benedict Abbey monastery on a spring day, Binet combines spatial and architectural elements to present a beautiful scene, contrasting light and dark.
Published in a limited edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered on the reverse by the artist and presented in a portfolio.
‘Two windows allow light to enter the Abbey, creating two characters. They could meet on a surface but actually, the space between the two windows doesn’t allow the encounter. They will be eternally dancing and reflecting on each other, to the extent that one looks like the shadow of the other.’

Petra Börner
Petra Börner is a Swedish artist and illustrator living and working in London. She uses a diverse range of materials and techniques including works on paper, canvas, ceramics and animation. But at the heart of her practice lies her passion for drawing. Painting, drawing, sculpting or cutting into paper, she instinctively creates layers of colour and bold shapes.
This screenprint is based on a collage Börner created in 2019. Originally hand-cut in paper using a scalpel, the incisions mimic the organic movements of drawing. Layering paper on top of paper, the forms create positive and negative space, breaking down the shape of the body as pattern and exploring identity.

Derek Boshier
As part of the British Pop Art movement, Derek Boshier has been drawing on media coverage as a source of inspiration since the early 1960s. This series was commissioned by Eileen Cooper RA, then Head of the Royal Academy Schools Print Department, bringing established artists into the Schools to make prints.
This series of etchings features six characters: the celebrity, the fashion model, the corporate executive, a transsexual, a terrorist and the depressed urbanist. All are inspired by media coverage of specific events.
Produced in a limited edition of 30, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Olwyn Bowey RA
Olwyn Bowey RA’s work is characterised by its vigorous interrogation of her subject matter, which includes flowers, fruit and cacti. Bowey studied at the Royal College of Art when Ruskin Spear, Leonard Rosoman and Carel Weight were tutors. Initially interested in portraiture, Bowey later moved to the countryside to concentrate on landscape and stilllife. One of her main sources of inspiration comes from the tradition of the artist-plantsman, particularly John Nash who was also teaching at the RCA.
Presented here are two digital prints produced by Bowey, from her days spent drawing in the warmth of West Dean’s Victorian greenhouses in West Sussex.

Sir Frank Bowling RA
The RA Editions programme is proud to present this print by Sir Frank Bowling OBE RA.
This work is based on Bowling’s striking Octoberbloom II painting, first shown in the Royal Academy’s 2011 exhibition, Journeyings. Reflecting on notions of family, illness and healing, it emerged from naturally imposed limitations and the artist’s unending desire to invent new ways to paint.
Eleven years on, this edition revisits Octoberbloom II with incredibly effervescent results. A two-plate polymer gravure with relief printing and deep etching, it incorporates sixteen colours with fluorescent and pearlescent inks and is hand-finished with varnish.
Whilst embodying the powerful physical presence of his works on paper from this time, this print captures the vibrancy of colour, mesmerising composition and tactility of material that is infinitely recognisable in Sir Frank’s oeuvre.
Printed by Thumbprint Editions and produced in a limited edition of 68, each print is signed and numbered on the reverse.
‘My ambition as an artist is to open up new ways of picturing the now, the present… spilling, dripping, brushing, spreading, bleeding liquid material: paint engaging and enacting movement.’

John Carter RA
Influenced by the works of European concrete and constructivist artists, John Carter RA’s printmaking is closely related to his process of developing the abstract wall objects for which he is best known.
This limited edition aquatint print was first shown in an exhibition of prints to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018. It forms part of the Transition series which Carter has been working on since 2012.
Produced in a limited edition of 30, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

‘[The title of the series] refers to the transition, from left to right, of a channel of space which cuts into the body of the work, dividing it into two zones, one which points to the left and the other which points to the right. Two squares, one above the other, in various dimensions, are another feature of the theme.’

Stephen Chambers RA
The personification of trees is at the heart of Stephen Chambers RA’s series The Talking Trees of England. Chambers’ subjects are knowing and mischievous; they provide shelter, or a place to hide, and represent longevity and the great tradition of the English countryside.
This pair of etchings was produced to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018.
Published as an edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Mohini Chandra
Created to coincide with Entangled Pasts, 1768–now: Art, Colonialism and Change, this screenprint by Mohini Chandra is her first venture into printmaking and is part of a larger body of work focusing on sailing ships, engaged in voyages of discovery, slavery and colonisation. Following research into maritime history, particularly colonial shipping and shipwrecks in the Southwest of England, Chandra searches for images of sailing ships from books found in local charity shops and flea markets.
In these works, which incorporate collage and overpainting, the ship loses its specificity and becomes a ghostly cipher for all vessels engaged in the voyages of empire. The location of each ship varies – on the high seas, in ports and against ‘exotic’ coastlines – reflecting the global reach of colonial shipping.
Published as an edition of 30 in the RA Schools with printmaker Leigh Clarke, each print is on Somerset Satin 300 gsm paper with hand-torn edges. Each is signed and numbered by the artist and presented in a portfolio.
‘I hope that the series becomes a large installation of multiples – an intervention into existing cultural frames of reference around empire. Working in print for the first time, in conjunction with the RA Schools, has allowed me to experiment with new materials and methods. This print reflects a critical stage in my process of discovery and experimentation.’

Published in a limited edition of 35, each copy is accompanied by a print, Finding Lines. Produced in collaboration with Amy-Jane Blackhall at Ink on Paper Press in Wiltshire, each intaglio print was hand-finished by Christopher, with hand-drawn graphite lines and collage.
‘I know little about the technical art of printmaking, but I knew what I wanted to achieve. One thing I had to ask AJ to do was to stop me working by hand on each individual printsomething I had often done in the past. She didn’t succeed... I added a three-dimensional paper spike and hand-drew lines on each print.’

Hen Coleman
Hen Coleman’s work contrasts the abundance of nature with the carefully measured environment of ideas to depict a dynamic third territory. Throughout her practice, the use of certain repeated motifs and marks hints at the examination of nature in detail.
This specially commissioned etching, produced in the RA Schools, depicts a layered natural form in a transformed state. Using chine-collé, a collage technique which uses thin pieces of Japanese paper, Coleman adds a further subtle dimension to the monochrome palette of the print.

Sir Peter Cook RA
Sir Peter Cook RA is an English architect, lecturer and writer. As a founder member of the visionary group Archigram in the early 1960s, he helped to reimagine radically new possibilities for architecture, dismantling constructs and then reassembling them. Cook compares drawing by hand to new computer-based techniques, reasoning that while software can do amazing things, drawing by hand allows the architect to learn, communicate and experiment in a way that is irreplaceable.

Sir Michael Craig-Martin RA
We are proud to present Book (RA), a limited edition screenprint specially made by Royal Academician Sir Michael Craig-Martin CBE.
The artist’s dynamic composition references both his career as a hugely influential teacher at Goldsmiths, London, and the Royal Academy’s role as a pioneering centre for learning and debate. Carefully cropped, with its pages mid-turn, the image becomes almost abstracted.
Published in a limited edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered on the back by the artist.
Craig-Martin’s multi-disciplinary practice encompasses largescale painting, installation and sculpture as well as printmaking and computer works. His work is characterised by its exploration, in deceptively simple forms, of everyday domestic objects such as lightbulbs, shoes, umbrellas and coffee cups. Using line drawing and a vibrant palette, CraigMartin’s visual language is unique.

Adam Dant
Adam Dant is renowned for creating highly detailed prints, drawings and maps with elaborate narratives that trace their lineage back to the works of eighteenthcentury social commentary artists such as James Gillray and William Hogarth. Rather than creating direct political satire, Dant deploys the anecdotal and the everyday in a humorous way to reveal the slippery contingencies of contemporary life.

These two prints by Anne Desmet RA were first shown in an exhibition of prints to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts in 2018. Both are limited editions and each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
Reflecting Desmet’s strong connection to the Royal Academy, the first work, New RA in Construction, a stone lithograph made at Hole Editions, Newcastle, celebrates the expanded RA campus via a series of studies of the 6 Burlington Gardens building site. The print reveals the artist’s exploration of the historical architecture of the building, including the entrance staircase, the inner structure of the domed ceiling in the listed British Academy Room and the imposing roof statuary. Also featured is the newly created grand lecture theatre, which in Desmet’s depiction suggests the form of an ancient amphitheatre.

Elliot Dodd
Working in film, computer animation, music, drawing and sculpture, Elliot Dodd’s multidisciplinary practice is dominated by his unique characters. Part human, part fantastical creature and characterised by fluorescent colour and bulbous eyes, they reside in simulated worlds that hover between reality and the virtual.
This limited edition sculpture by the RA Schools graduate brings together a number of technologies. Dodd made a larger version of this work for the Virtually Real project at the Royal Academy in January 2017, exploring the creative possibilities of virtual reality software. Using cutting-edge technology, he started with a drawing made using Google Tilt Brush and then threedimensionally printed it.
Produced as an edition of 15, each sculpture has the artist’s name, title, edition number and date printed onto it.

Peter Donaldson
The starting point for Peter Donaldson’s sculptures is ordinary everyday objects. Recomposed and re-created in new materials, these mundane items acquire a sense of the uncanny.
And Another One Bites The Dust –a sculptural edition commissioned by the RA Editions programme – was made by casting a giant foam hand in Jesmonite, a chalky water-based resin. Donaldson manipulates this culturally loaded object by fossilising the foam and breaking it into three parts which he reassembles in a different order. While this gives it the appearance of a damaged relic from a bygone era, the work’s title itself pays homage to a 1980 anthem by the British Rock band Queen
Produced in the RA Schools an as edition of 12, each piece is handpainted, initialled and numbered by the artist.

Jennifer Durrant RA
Jennifer Durrant RA’s work has been praised for its symbolic resonance. The abstract forms which distinguish her work often suggest natural processes but resist definition. The paintings from her Ghirlanda series feature vertical bands of colour incorporating strips of irregularly shaped circular forms.
This limited edition rug features a design from the series and is produced in collaboration with Christopher Farr.
Produced as an edition of 150 and delivered with a signed certificate of authenticity, each rug is hand dyed and made from 100% wool.
Christopher Farr prides itself on using only the very best available yarn, dyes and weavers to produce the finest rugs and textiles. The company actively supports Care & Fair, an organisation based in India dedicated to the elimination of child labour in the rug industry and the education of children in weaving areas.

Zhang Enli
From familiar everyday objects in his immediate surroundings, to municipal structures in the streets of Shanghai, Zhang Enli’s works offer new perspectives on unusual details. His installations often involve fluid, painterly walls, floors and ceilings, which fully immerse the viewer while emphasising a sense of emptiness.
Zhang Enli is the first Chinese artist-in-residence to take part in the RA’s residency programme in collaboration with K11 Art Foundation. This exclusive screenprint is a light yet immersive topographic study of Shanghai’s coastline, and was made in the RA Schools’ print studio during his time at the Academy.

Stephen Farthing RA
Stephen Farthing RA’s print for the RA Editions programme continues his fascination with the drawing process, taking a domestic tree in Virginia as his subject.
Farthing drew his first ‘tree portraits’ in the summer of 1999, in Southern France. The following year he moved to New York and halfway through the process of re-drawing the trees onto etching plates, the project was halted as a result of a studio fire. His advice on drawing trees is to “start with the very highest leaf and slowly work your way down… the trunk is the easy bit”.

Blue Firth
Blue Firth’s work often uses historical narratives and explores how our perceptions can be shaped by built environments. Her prints use layering, metallic inks and textured images to create moiré effects that appear to move in and out of the page. These effects are used in conjunction with symbols and imagery from popular culture. The graphic symbolism she forms creates images which reference the ambiguity and surrealist tendencies found in everyday media.
This multilayered screenprint has all the hallmarks of Firth’s visual language.

Peter Freeth RA
One of the abiding themes in Peter Freeth RA’s artwork is that of past masters. In Shop Talk on Parnassus – Le Chat de Monsieur Manet Rencontre Le Chien de Monsieur Seurat, he draws on the canon of art history to create a visual metaphor for inspiration.
According to some, Parnassus was the home of the muses and site of the Castalian Spring, a font of inspiration. In Freeth’s capriccio a dog from Seurat’s pointillist masterpiece A Sunday on La Grande Jatte encounters a cat from a woodcut by Manet, made for the cover of a book of essays by Champfleury. The meeting is imagined in the company of birds and against a background borrowed from works by Piero, Bellini and others.

Marisa J. Futernick
Marisa J. Futernick is a Los Angeles-based artist and writer and a graduate of the RA Schools. Her work explores expressions of ‘Americanness’, weaving together the personal with the historical and fact with fiction. Born in the US, the artist lived in London for 15 years, during which her work became increasingly focused on her home country.
She uses a variety of media including photography, film and video, installation, writing, radio, and painting; with the combination of text and image a regular feature throughout.
In works such as this, Futernick tells stories about the promise of the ‘American Dream’, addressing issues of class, progress, and real estate. This photograph features in the artist’s book How I Taught Umberto Eco to Love the Bomb, which accompanies the print.
Featuring real-life cultural critics as fictional characters, How I Taught Umberto Eco to Love the Bomb is the tale of a California road trip, with Futernick serving as driver, tour guide, and American optimist. The book combines original colour photographs with a short story by the artist.
Published in a limited edition of 40, each print and book is signed and numbered by the artist.

Mark Hampson
Madame and Monsieur are a pair of fictional portraits of fantastical artists created by Mark Hampson. They have their origins in a larger family of anachronistic figures entitled Keepers of the Creative Muse [they also paint caves].
Created by a merger of digital and autographic drawings and processing through solar etching plates, they are then inked by hand in single colours and embossed.
Although a committed printmaker and painter since his graduation from the Royal College of Art in 1992, Hampson considers this pair to be the first true etchings he has professionally published.
Both prints are produced in an edition of 40, with each print signed and numbered by the artist.

Jane Harris
Contemporary British painter Jane Harris is known for using the ellipse as a recurring motif in her paintings and works on paper. A geometric form, the ellipse can be perceived simultaneously as a flat shape on the picture surface and a circle in perspective, creating formal and spatial ambiguities. These ever-changing relationships between surface, light, form and space have been a preoccupation for over 30 years. Through her meticulous process, she creates intense and seductive works that have been poetically termed as ‘Rococo Minimalism’.
The Parting, Harris’ first printed artwork, features a double reversed emboss and bears the signature qualities of her paintings – elliptical forms, mirroring pairs and boldly luminous colour.
Produced in a limited edition of 30, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Karoliina Hellberg
Attention to detail, versatile painting and printing techniques and a skilled use of colour are strong qualities of Karoliina Hellberg’s work.
Lökar (Onions) was made specially to accompany the Helene Schjerfbeck exhibition at the Royal Academy. Hellberg employs her distinctive detailed and layered approach to this newly imagined interior. A selection of literal references to Schjerfbeck’s works, which Hellberg finds most personally meaningful, can be found throughout the composition.
Produced in a limited edition of 25, each work is presented in a portfolio. This print is among a group of three works celebrating Finnish artists. Other works by Kustaa Saksi and Aino-Maija Metsola are also available.

Gary Hume RA
The RA Editions programme is pleased to present these two exciting limited edition prints by Gary Hume RA. The recurring theme is nature, in all its forms: from the initial desire to create, to the inspiration behind the prints. Hume embraces the spontaneous nature of the woodblock technique, where mis-registration and accidents are ‘part of the beauty’.
Published in the RA Schools’ print studio with printmaker Leigh Clarke, both prints are produced as an edition of 40, each signed and numbered by the artist.
‘What’s really lovely about doing these prints is after placing the different wood blocks in, a slight twist one way or another is just remarkable and makes each one unique…so while you’re printing you’re still drawing.’

‘Following a set of large wall drawings I made in Venice I began a series of works playing with balancing and toppling geometric shapes giving a sense of precariousness and suspense.
I discovered that this format with its implied sculptural manifestation could seem sinister at times, as was my first intention in shapes of varying proportions to illustrate impending climate catastrophe, but also playful and entertaining at other times evoking acrobatic performances’

Bill Jacklin RA
Bill Jacklin RA studied graphics in Walthamstow, London. He worked as a graphic designer before turning to painting in the early 1960s, studying at the Royal College of Art. Initially concerned with abstraction, Jacklin moved towards figurative work in the mid-1970s after relocating to New York. Recording ‘people involved in their passions’, Jacklin examines the flow of forms and the play of light.
Presented here are two RA Edition prints and a Special Edition catalogue.
This pair of etchings is drawn from various sketches Jacklin made over the years while observing Sheep Meadow, a large lawn in Central Park, New York. The works explore the relationship between the figures in the park, their shadows and the patterns that are created.

Tess Jaray RA
Tess Jaray RA’s work is characterised by the enigmatic interaction of colour and form. Her use of bold colour creates a subtle pulsating effect, compelling the eye to adjust constantly between stacks and background. The work’s perfectly flat surface ensures nothing intrudes upon the viewer’s experience and creates a similar effect to Jaray’s paintings and screenprints.
Presented here are two RA Edition prints and a Special Edition publication.

Allen Jones RA
Presented here is an RA Edition print, an edition lamp and a Special Edition publication.
This limited edition woodblock print was created by Allen Jones RA in response to the Academy’s 2017 Matisse in the Studio exhibition.
Although the visual language and pistachio palette are both inspired by Matisse’s work, the source material for this image can be found in the metal screens or ‘moon gates’ that Jones has made for various rural sites in the UK including Chatsworth House. The linear design around a circular void lends itself perfectly to framing a vista. In this print, Jones’ characteristically sensual figures surround the negative space; the small still-life in the corner of the design is a direct homage to Matisse.

The RA Editions programme is proud to present The Pool Ahead is Not to be Trusted, a limited edition print by William Kentridge Hon RA. A sugarlift aquatint, the technique enables the artist to etch beautiful marks similar to brush-strokes into the plate.
Rooted in Kentridge’s recent project The Head & the Load, ‘The Pool Ahead is not to be Trusted’ is a line from the project’s accompanying libretto. A stage piece of recorded music and voice, performance, shadows and projection, it was first presented at the Tate Turbine Hall in 2018.
Produced as an edition of 40, each work is signed and numbered by the artist.
‘The Head & the Load is about Africa and Africans in the First World War, that is to say about the contradictions and paradoxes of colonialism that were heated and compressed by the circumstances of the war. It is about historical incomprehension (and inaudibility and invisibility). The colonial logic towards the black participants could be summed up as, “Lest their actions merit recognition, their deeds must not be recorded.”
The Head & the Load aims to recognise and record those deeds.’

William Kentridge Hon RA
Published to coincide with his major exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2022, this catalogue delves into the highly immersive work of William Kentridge. In this brilliant exposition, Stephen Clingman undertakes a series of enquiries, of walks around the artist and his practice, through the various layers and linkages, crossings and connections of his art. As he proceeds, he considers Kentridge’s themes, explores them and moves by association to others. Along the way, overlaps, thought-collages, allusions and assemblages come together to create a connective, dimensional way of thinking inspired by Kentridge’s own habits of creation.
Beautifully clothbound and produced as a special edition of 300, each book is signed and numbered by the artist and features one of three works on paper; a laser-cut stencil image applied on a unique piece of found paper. Available in three different motifs, each work is stamped by the William Kentridge Studio.

& is a bespoke unisex fragrance developed directly with William Kentridge in collaboration with Floris London, the oldest familyrun perfumer in Britain. Made of five accords, & is about a sense of place and the artist himself. It evokes the lush garden surrounding Kentridge’s home, his studio environment and the materials he uses.
The opening of this fragrance is fresh, citrusy and spicy. The notes of bergamot, black pepper and cassis transport us to the vibrant greenery on the way to Kentridge’s studio in the heart of South Africa. Hidden beneath watery floral notes is the scent of charcoal and pencils, brushes and ink.
Undulating from fresh to deep notes, this fragrance is rooted in the powdery scent of paper, in combination with the woody notes of musk.
Produced in a limited edition of 200, each bottle is hand-numbered, presented in a gift box and wrapped in a custom double-sided paper.
‘Walking across freshlycut grass, brushing past leafy beds and blooming bushes, you enter the studio where you are surrounded by ink and charcoal drawings and photographs pinned to the walls, found objects, boxes of charcoal and notebooks, pencils and pastels strewn across his desk. This unisex fragrance is the comforting dustiness of old books, irises drawn in charcoal, the fountain gurgling outside the studio door, a crisply pressed white cotton shirt and wooden plan chests, laden with prints and drawings. It is the space of making, the space of ideas, of experimentation, of creation. It is the stories & the telling, the materials & the work, the place & the person.’

HaYoung Kim
HaYoung Kim examines the notion that people are losing some part of their humanity and individuality by participating in a high technology society. Are we becoming, as she calls them, ‘characterless characters’?
In this screenprint, Kim continues her exploration of how the cold, rational and ‘intelligent’ logic of technology can create vulnerability and fragility in people.

Liane Lang
Liane Lang merges sculpture and photography to re-present the Albert Memorial, and the imperial, self-aggrandising tendencies it embodies, provocatively.
Lang’s works often examine and question the credibility of museum artefacts and the narratives they attempt to tell, particularly figurative sculptures and political monuments. In Europe (Albert Memorial), she continues her interrogation through visual puns, making the original work more relevant to the twenty-first century. Besieged by rising seas, Germany holds a bucket, and Europe a bag of money –mockingly to evoke both flooding and catastrophic debt.
Produced in a limited edition of 30, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Kyla McCallum
Kyla McCallum is a paper artist and the founder of Foldability studio in London. She creates art, set design, bespoke installations and sculptures inspired by origami and geometry. This paper sculpture takes inspiration from her first origami piece made in 2009: a scaled model design for a treehouse suspended in the woods.
Made from two separate pieces of folded paper, Entwine is similarly architectural. The paper pages rise from flat sheets into rippling and dense combinations of folds, curving and intertwining, commanding different viewpoints.

Mary Maclean
The RA Editions programme is pleased to present this photogravure print by the artist, photographer and lecturer Mary Maclean (1962–2018).
This characteristically monochrome print uses as its starting point a photograph of a traditional blackboard. The versatility of the photogravure technique, a contemporary form of etching, allows the artist to create a dynamic image rich in texture, tone and varied mark-making.
Produced in a limited edition of 40, Outcomes May Vary #1 reflects many of the themes and processes Maclean explored in her practice.

Chitra Merchant
In much of her work Chitra Merchant uses ancient Indian historical sites as a source of inspiration to develop imagined structures. This limited edition screenprint, produced exclusively for RA Editions, continues that theme.
Devakad – Remembered is part of a body of work inspired by Merchant’s trip to India. During this journey she was able to visit some of the forests of Karnataka and Kerala, in particular the Devakads and sacred groves found on the Western Ghats. The depicted building is a composite image of a working temple in the Kodagu district of southern India together with ancient animistic deities. The Dravidian-style architecture of the temple features in many buildings in this region.

Nancy Milner
In what is Nancy Milner’s first foray into printmaking, this work stays true to her painting practice. Milner works out colour and composition through a slow process of building and layering. The Royal Academy’s Keeper’s Print Prize award offered Milner the first experience of working in a printed medium. The resulting etching, produced using multiple plates and repeat layerings of coloured inks, dramatically shifts the scale and speed of her painterly approach by creating an intensity of image and intimacy of mark making that is a unique consequence of the etching technique.
Produced in the RA Schools in a limited edition of 125, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
This print is one of a suite of four small-scale works produced by RA Schools graduates to celebrate the opening of the Keeper’s House. Other works in the suite by Adham Faramawy, Michael O’Reilly and Charlie Billingham are also available.

Published to coincide with a major show at Alan Cristea Gallery in London, this volume by the late Mel Gooding is a comprehensive survey of Mick Moon RA’s career. Moon’s paintings and prints combine a wide variety of media and techniques in complex layers. More recently, photographic elements have formed part of his practice, along with textural materials such as wood and cloth, which the artist combines with ink and paint.
For this special edition, Moon has created a silkscreen print Back and Forth. Co-published by the Royal Academy and Advanced Graphics London as an edition of 50, each is signed and numbered by the artist and presented in a clamshell box.

Mali Morris RA
Mali Morris RA’s experiments with colour, layering, and pictorial space have made her one of the most intriguing abstract artists working in Britain today.
Presented here is an RA Edition print and a Special Edition publication.
Mali Morris translates her painterly preoccupations with colour, light and space – and how these relate to experience – into the medium of screenprint. Ruby Tuesday was produced in the RA Schools in collaboration with Hen Coleman.
The concentrated composition of the piece engages the viewer in the contemplation of pure abstraction, in which colour relationships create luminosity, and set up rhythms and layers across the page.
Published in a limited edition of 34, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

‘Printing is totally different from painting, and I have found this contrast useful to think about. I imagined it to be like painting back to front, or inside out, and with less freedom to play. Instead it has brought other, unexpected, possibilities.
The crucial moment was when I asked for a second red over the top right rectangle. I had planned for further stages, more shapes, but that move suddenly opened up the space and everything clicked into place, so I decided it was finished.’

This is the first comprehensive publication dedicated to Mali Morris’ paintings, covering the last forty years. Prefaced by the late Mel Gooding, the book also features an insightful essay by Sam Cornish that evaluates the influence and importance of Morris’ work, as well as writings by the artist.
Each book in this limited edition of 50 features an original screenprint, Calling, individually signed and numbered by the artist.
The process of making this print was a considered one for Morris: ‘I made very many studies in paint and collage to arrive at this configuration and palette, trying out a range of colours and scales, finding out how the space is changed by every tiny difference. Everything matters, every edge, every density, every interval and every relationship. At the same time I wanted a directness of handling – for the forms to go down with an immediacy of touch.’

Humphrey Ocean RA
Humphrey Ocean RA is very much a convert to print. In 2003 the artist began work on his first small box-set of aquatints, based on his Dot Book drawings. He soon went on to make his larger Love Chair etchings. Today, the medium is one of his favourite forms of expression.
Presented here are two RA Edition prints and a Special Edition publication.
The first print, Yellow Chair, is drawn from Ocean’s many drawings, paintings and prints of chairs that can be interpreted as a form of portrait.
The second, After Dark, is an intensely atmospheric yet characteristically playful woodblock, featuring a house at night, a recurring image for the artist.
Both are produced in limited editions, each signed and numbered by the artist.

Ever since this inspiring moment, Humphrey Ocean has been attracted by the unusual behaviour and colours of birds, finding everyday British garden visitors in all their variety quite as exotic as those he sees in the hedgerows and lake near where he stays in Africa.
Drawing from Ocean’s notebooks, this book mirrors the charming collection of paintings and sketches the artist has made over the years.

Michael O’Reilly
In his printmaking debut, Michael O’Reilly combines the medium’s expressive and gestural potential with elements from his painting practice.
O’Reilly’s imaginary and sometimes idyllic landscapes resemble real scenarios in which he places mystifying objects and figures relating to personal memories and conflicting feelings. His work intends to articulate close sensory experiences. Found photographs, as well as everyday encounters and journeys, provide the inspiration for O’Reilly’s work. The virtuosic works of Chris Orr MBE RA revel in the surreal comedy of human life, juxtaposing the everyday and the extraordinary with playful humour and an acute eye for detail.
Presented here is an RA Edition print and a Special Edition publication.
Part of The Miserable Lives of Fabulous Artists series and first shown in a 2018 exhibition of the same name, this lithograph by Chris Orr celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Royal Academy of Arts.
The series of paintings, also published as a monograph by the RA, features some of the great names from art history including Pablo Picasso, Frida Kahlo and Hokusai, among others. Using his characteristically humorous visual language, Orr portrays each artist in scenarios that elaborate inventively upon wellknown elements of their life and work. Looking beyond, Orr’s work engages with the modern city and the social interactions that shape it.

An everyday object is transformed into a curious and engaging image in this striking polymer photogravure etching by Cornelia Parker CBE RA.
Parker is known for her practice of destroying objects only to recreate and transform the remnants, changing both their appearance and contextual meaning. Presented here is an RA Edition print and three Special Edition publications.
This etching is one of a series of work originating from Dr Barbara Rae CBE RA RSA RE’s inspirational travels through the Arctic. Following a path taken by her namesake, Dr John Rae, Barbara Rae has now made several journeys to the Arctic Ocean. Her practice involves taking photographs, making sketches and small paintings in her cabin, and completing larger works in her Edinburgh studio upon her return. The specific location of this piece, Baffin Island, is the largest island in Arctic Canada, known for its dramatic scenery, wildlife and Inuit culture.
Produced in a limited edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
In 2015 Rae followed in the footsteps of explorer Dr John Rae on a journey through Greenland. In this impressive publication, with fine texts by Duncan Macmillan, Tom Muir and Tagak Curley, the reader is immersed in the frozen landscape of the Arctic.

Barbara Rae RA
The sketchbooks of Barbara Rae provide themes and motifs for her paintings and prints. This publication draws its rich content from those sketchbooks and is contextualised through insightful interviews and texts by Gareth Wardell and Richard Cork.
This special edition of the book includes the etching Skipness Produced as an edition of 100, the prints are individually signed and numbered by the artist.
‘Skipness evolved from studies on the peninsula of Kintyre on the west coast of Scotland. I was drawn to this area because of its proximity to Kilmartin, which has the most important concentration of Neolithic and Bronze Age remains in mainland Scotland, spanning 5,000 years.’
In this first comprehensive study of Rae’s prints, Andrew Lambirth charts her development as a printmaker from her early experiments at Edinburgh College of Art to her recent collaboration with Coriander Studios. While the significant relationship with her painting is demonstrated, it is Rae’s unwavering commitment to printmaking as an independent and important medium, and her continued experimentation with its methods and materials, that distinguish her work.
Included in this special edition of the book is Achill, an exclusive etching inspired by Rae’s yearly travels to the far west coast of County Mayo in Ireland.
Published in a limited edition of 100, the prints are individually signed and numbered by the artist.

David Remfry RA
David Remfry MBE RA has long been fascinated by the relationships that develop between dogs and their owners. This book features drawings of dogs and their often famous owners, made in Remfry’s studio in the Chelsea Hotel in New York and in London.
At the beginning of We Think the World of You, Remfry recalls a conversation he overheard in a gym locker room in New York. One young man asks his friend: ‘So, how are you getting on with her?’ The friend replies: ‘I am consumed by her. I think of her all day. I’m desperate to see her. I’m so in love with her it scares me.’ Who is the object of this man’s affection, Remfry wonders? Then, the first man asks: ‘Is she your first dog?’ The anecdote perfectly illustrates the special love dog-owners have for their dogs, a relationship that Remfry has been drawing for many decades.
The book features Alan Cumming and his rescue dog Honey; Susan Sarandon and her diva-like Pomeranians, Penny and Rigby; Agnes Gund and her Wheaten Terriers, Tina, Giotto and Bronzino; Laura Kaplan and her Dachshund Oscar; and Ethan Hawke and Nina.
This special edition is presented with the print Dog Talk.

Rebecca Salter PRA
The RA Editions programme is proud to present two prints by Rebecca Salter PRA, not seen and trace(d) element 1.
Salter often uses traditional Japanese woodblock printmaking techniques to create the subtle, light-filled imagery of her distinctive prints. Although not seen is a laser-cut woodblock print, the artist’s visual language in this print explores similar territory.
Both prints are produced in limited editions, each signed and numbered by the artist.
‘My work is incredibly detailed, obsessive really, and there’s a correlation between the time it takes for me to make works and time it takes people to look at them. There’s a term in Japanese: “your eyes sit”. It means that you stop actively looking – the muscles in your eyes relax, you start seeing things in a much more receptive way because you’re not as active in the way that you’re looking. So that’s what I want people to do.’

The myth of Philomela has inspired many creative minds through the ages, among them Ovid, Shakespeare and T. S. Eliot. Philomela is believed to have been the princess of Athens in Greek mythology. After being assaulted by her sister’s husband, she takes revenge and is transformed into a nightingale, a bird renowned for its sorrowful-sounding song. Saville is best known for her large-scale oil paintings of female figures; focusing on flesh, extremities of anatomy and the grotesque. This very special limited edition provides a lasting legacy of Saville’s close association with the Rubens exhibition.
Produced in a limited edition of 100, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Conrad Shawcross RA
The sculptures of Conrad Shawcross RA explore subjects that lie on the borders of geometry and philosophy, physics and metaphysics. For the 2015 Summer Exhibition’s Annenberg Courtyard installation Shawcross created a large-scale immersive work – The Dappled Light of the Sun – consisting of five weathered steel, cloud-like forms made from thousands of tetrahedrons that divide and cascade down in scale from the centre out.
Presented here is an RA Edition sculpture and a Special Edition publication that both relate to the installation.
Entitled Seed, this RA Edition is composed of four equilateral triangles welded together to form a tetrahedron which is the essential building block or cell that the vast installation is composed of.
Shawcross’ choice of the tetrahedron is rooted in his practice of modelling scientific thought and reason into his artwork. The tetrahedron was regarded by the ancient Greek philosophers as the symbol of the atom – the unobtainable but essential unit of all matter that could not be further subdivided.
Produced as an edition of 250, each piece is signed and numbered by the artist.

Yinka Shonibare RA
Through sculpture, painting, photography, film and performance, Yinka Shonibare CBE RA’s practice explores issues of race and class, questioning the meaning of cultural and national identities.
This exciting RA Edition originates from an archival photograph first encountered during Shonibare’s research for The RA Family Album. It was originally featured on a limited edition stamp, commemorating the RAs 250 year anniversary in 2018.
The aerial photograph of the Royal Academy courtyard captures a quintessential British scene; a crowd queuing in the rain to enter a Turner retrospective. In Shonibare’s characteristic reimagining of subject, and emphasised through the minimalist reduction of the print, the colourful umbrellas of the crowd are abstracted to create a magical, almost surreal spectacle.
Playfully interspersed are puddles of slick varnish mimicking the rain and unique pieces of Dutch wax batik fabric, a signature of the artist and now synonymous with his work.
Published in a limited edition of 60 and printed by Coriander Studio, each print is stamped and numbered by the artist and presented in a portfolio.

Bob and Roberta Smith RA
Presented here is an RA Edition and a Special Edition publication.
In this screenprint, Bob and Roberta Smith OBE RA combines images from his polemical film Art Party, to satirise brilliantly the Conservative Education Secretary Michael Gove’s policies on art education.
The print, deliberately ‘low tech’ and gritty in appearance, incorporates pictures of contemporary artists including Cornelia Parker RA, Jeremy Deller and Richard Wentworth. Bob and Roberta Smith’s iconic text-painting letter to Michael Gove was shown in the Academy’s 2014 Summer Exhibition.
Produced in a limited edition of 40, each screenprint is signed and numbered by the artist.

Bob and Roberta Smith RA
Bob and Roberta Smith’s parents were artists. Each year, they submitted work to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and waited nervously to see if they’d be accepted. Triumph or disaster accompanied the result. Then, Bob and Roberta’s mother, the painter Deirdre Borlase, discovered that she was more likely to be accepted if she disguised her gender, signing her paintings ‘D. Borlase’.
Told in his signature signwriting style, this family story explores the role of women artists, the sexism of the art world and the benefits of drawing every day.
This special edition is accompanied by two wonderful limited works: a Bob and Roberta Smith lithograph The Secret to a Good Life, as well as a risograph zine exploring the life of Mary Moser RA by Deirdre’s granddaughter, the artist Etta Voorsanger-Brill.
Published as an edition of 250, both pieces are signed and numbered by their respective artists.

Emma Stibbon RA
Emma Stibbon RA has recorded some of the world’s most transient landscapes, from the decaying architecture of East Berlin to Iceland’s volcanic terrain. Her work often explores the impact of natural forces: the shifting tectonic plates, volcanic activity and powerful glaciers that shape and transform the Earth’s surface.
Presented here is an RA Edition print and a Special Edition publication.
This print, inspired by her travels in the Antarctic Peninsula, explores the elemental power and fragility of the frozen Polar ice sheets.
On an artist placement aboard HMS Protector, Stibbon documented the vast yet delicate environment of the Antarctic in varying media. In contrast to the sophisticated digital technologies employed by the Royal Navy, Stibbon used brush and ink to draw swiftly from observation. She believes that the human, tactile response still has an important role in communicating about environments undergoing dynamic change.
This richly tonal intaglio etching is produced as an edition of 25, each signed and numbered by the artist.

Beautifully illustrated, Fire and Ice reveals Stibbon’s eye-witness drawings made in the field alongside commentary by the artist on the making of each image and her motivation to depict nature’s extremes.
Stibbon has accompanied research expeditions in the Arctic and Antarctic Oceans, lived on the rim of a volcano in Hawai’i and has made several field trips to Norway, Iceland and Stromboli, off the coast of northern Sicily. This book presents the sketches she made during her travels. They have the immediacy of work made at speed using materials to hand, such as volcanic ash, produced in difficult circumstances and often frozen conditions.
This special edition of the book includes two intaglio prints with hand colouring: Ice Floe and Eruption, Stromboli.
Published in a limited edition of 50, each is signed and numbered by the artist and presented in a clamshell box.

Joe Tilson RA
Published to accompany Joe Tilson RA’s retrospective exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2002, this book explores over sixty years of work.
‘Defying the conventions of traditional printmaking practice, Joe Tilson RA’s unique visual language continues to draw on his early experiences as a carpenter,’ writes Mel Gooding in his insightful introduction.
This graphic visual language is clear to see in Ziggurat, a screen and woodcut print produced by Tilson with Advanced Graphics in London.

Luc Tuymans
This print celebrates Luc Tuymans’ curation of the exhibition Intrigue: James Ensor in 2016. As a lasting legacy of his involvement in the Royal Academy show, Tuymans produced this work in the RA Schools.
Tuymans often works from pre-existing imagery such as Polaroid photographs, television footage and magazine cuttings. His paintings and drawings appear slightly out of focus with a deliberately washed-out palette giving them an eerie quality. Characteristic of this approach, the starting point for Premonition was an unsettling drawing of the same name on lined paper. This drawing also appears on the cover of a book of drawings he published in 1997.
Published as an edition of 80, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Maciej Urbanek
In his characteristic hyper-real style, Maciej Urbanek depicts the tropical foliage of the Everglades, Florida, in this limited edition print.
Urbanek makes large-scale photographic prints which explore and interpret the distinction between representation and reality. He describes the location behind So There Would Be No Thoughts as having heat reminiscent of the Caribbean and an underlying unease provided by the resident crocodiles.

Bill Viola Hon RA
This limited edition print by Bill Viola Hon RA was made in celebration of the Academy’s exhibition Bill Viola / Michelangelo: Life, Death, Rebirth in 2019.
The starting point for this etching, which was produced in the RA Schools, was a drawing by Viola made in 2006. The circular form, which seemingly vibrates on the page, is evocative of an eye or viewfinder.
As a student at Syracuse University in the early 1970s, Viola experimented with homemade versions of a camera obscura, allowing him to explore this method of image projection which dates back to ancient China.
Throughout his 45-year career Viola has extensively researched and experienced Eastern religions, which he describes as being ‘all about the knower and the known being part of a larger unity’. These concepts have been fundamental within Viola’s practice. The text is a translation from the Quran; it is attributed here to Zia Inayat Khan who is a scholar and teacher of Sufism. Key to this creed and central to Viola’s art is the notion of personal and collective transformation.
Published in 2019 as an edition of 40, each print is numbered in pencil, with the artist’s signature blind-embossed.

Ai Weiwei Hon RA
Presented here are four RA Edition sculptures and a Special Edition publication.
To celebrate his landmark exhibition at the Royal Academy in 2015, Ai Weiwei Hon RA handsculpted these beautiful porcelain chrysanthemum Flower editions exclusively for the RA.
First cultivated in China, chrysanthemums are considered a symbol of good luck and longevity. They are a recurring motif throughout Ai Weiwei’s work and also feature in his activism. When his passport was withheld by the Chinese government, Weiwei placed a fresh bouquet of flowers in a bicycle basket outside his studio every morning. He also set up an Instagram project called #aiflowers, inviting people everywhere to make flowers in remembrance of the children lost in the 2008 Sichuan earthquake.
Each piece is unique and limited to 60 each. Weiwei’s Flowers come in a clothbound presentation box with a certificate of authenticity signed by the artist. Available in white, pink, pale blue and mauve.

Published to coincide with the 2015 exhibition, this catalogue explores the multidisciplinary work of the artist in texts by Tim Marlow, John Hancock and Daniel Rosbottom.
For this limited edition, Ai Weiwei created 110 special hardback dust jackets. In each, a bold, calligraphic stroke sweeps across the paper to produce a painting of great vibrancy and spontaneity in celebration of the tactile qualities of the medium. Using a fully loaded brush, he allowed the paint to run and dribble down the paper under its own weight, producing works with an affinity to his Coloured Vases, which he creates by dipping antique Chinese ceramics into the same type of brightly coloured paint and allowing it to flow downwards.
Painted in ten colours as an edition of 110, each dust jacket is signed and numbered by the artist, and presented on the book in a clothbound clamshell box. We have eight of the ten colours available.

Chris Wilkinson RA
Collected from 20 years of his sketchbooks, this publication presents the dedication of Chris Wilkinson RA (1945–2021) to hand drawing as a foundation to his architectural design.
In a world that is dominated by computer-aided design, Wilkinson still uses drawing as a way to think through ideas to grapple with design problems and as a tool for communication. This unique insight into the design sketches of a hugely influential architect includes drawings for many of his practice’s most ground-breaking works around the world. They include the Stirling Prize-winning Magna at Rotherham, the Dyson Campus at Malmesbury, the Mary Rose Museum and the reconstruction of the King’s Cross Gasholders into some of the most sought-after apartments in London.
For this special edition, Wilkinson created the accompanying print City Place
The inspiration behind the print is to imagine a ‘fictitious urban space with misleading perspective, I like the idea of an abstract architectural drawing’.
Produced as an edition of 50, each is signed and numbered by the artist.

Richard Wilson RA
This print by Richard Wilson RA presents a composite of low resolution ‘image grabs’ which create the impression of an accidentally ‘low tech’ print, very much intended.
Hang On A Minute Lads, I’ve Got a Great Idea relates to Wilson’s monumental 2012 sculpture of a bus on the edge of the roof of the De La Warr Pavilion at Bexhill-on-Sea. The sculpture paid homage to the closing scene of the classic 1969 film The Italian Job. Like the film, both the installation and the print create a feeling of limbo, leaving the viewer unsure of what the future holds.
Produced as an edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.

Rose Wylie RA
We are delighted to present this screenprint made by Rose Wylie OBE RA specially for the RA Schools.
Derived from a series of coloured pencil drawings made whilst visiting New York, this print references American iconography and highlights Wylie’s perennial passion for working with popular culture, media, and daily observations.
During this trip, Wylie encountered the many facets of contemporary America culture as defined by advertising and pop culturefrom billboards promoting cars to the omnipresent global phenomenon that is Mickey Mouse. Using these visual archetypes as a narrative device, Wylie creates a wry, freewheeling artwork, in which she combines her signature spontaneous style with graphic simplicity.
At the time of producing the print, Wylie was experimenting with the diptych format and decided to combine these two images side by side to simultaneously record her visit to New York and to comment on modern American history.
Published in the RA Schools as an edition of 40, each print is signed and numbered by the artist.
