AUTUMN PROGRAMME

20I7

T H E P R I N C I PA L’ S W E LC O M E Welcome to Autumn at the Academy. The start of the academic year is always an exciting time for us. In addition to our new students, this year we also have a new front to our premises. As you will see when you visit us, the recently renovated entrance makes the building more accessible, while restoring some of the original features of the fine Edwardian architecture. This has made it not only more historic, but also more modern and inviting. This combination of past and present permeates our concert programme this season, and on the following pages you will find performances and events across a multitude of genres and styles. Performing is the lifeblood of the Academy, which is why our alumni fill the concert halls, opera houses, theatres and recording studios of the world. Students take part in nearly 500 performances every year, collaborating with some of the finest and most established names in the profession. When you come to an Academy performance, you will hear some of the world’s most talented young musicians as they embark on a lifetime of music. We welcome all our music-loving friends and supporters, and look forward to seeing you here at the Academy in the coming months.

Clio Gould director Programme: Schnittke Moz-Art à la Haydn Stravinsky Concerto in E flat, ‘Dumbarton Oaks’ Stravinsky Pulcinella Suite Directed by Clio Gould, the Sainsbury Royal Academy Soloists comprises the finest young string players from the Academy. Today they are joined by woodwind and brass students in a programme which demonstrates the influence of the great Baroque and Classical masters on Soviet composers Schnittke and Stravinsky.

Schnittke’s unabashedly comical Moz-Art à la Haydn is based on an unfinished fragment by Mozart and includes various historical references, including Haydn’s ‘Farewell’ Symphony. Stravinsky’s Concerto in E flat was inspired by Bach’s Brandenburg concertos and takes its name from the estate in Washington DC owned by Robert Woods Bliss and Mildred Barnes Bliss, who commissioned the work for their thirtieth wedding anniversary. The concert concludes with the Suite from Stravinsky’s Pulcinella, the ballet based on an eighteenth-century play whose main character originates from commedia dell’arte. The work features musical themes by Pergolesi expertly adapted and manipulated by Stravinsky for the twentieth century.

Programme: Elgar arr. Steven Verhelst Theme from ‘Enigma’ Variations JS Bach arr. Robert Madeson Ein feste Burg ist unser Gott, BWV 80 Rautavaara A Requiem in Our Time Beethoven Sonata in C minor, op.13, ‘Pathétique’: Adagio cantabile Elgar arr. Steven Verhelst ‘Enigma’ Variations The main theme of Elgar’s ‘Enigma’ Variations was not the theme initially planned for the piece; the composer claimed he had a famous melody in his head, created a countermelody to it and this became the main theme of the work. He never uncovered which melody he had in mind originally — this is the ‘enigma’! Over the years there has been much speculation about the original theme. Principal Trombone of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Amsterdam, and Visiting Professor of Trombone Jörgen van Rijen explores some of the possible solutions to the ‘enigma’ in a programme which culminates in an arrangement of the full work by Steven Verhelst..

The first work in the concert features a set of four dances from Tippett’s opera The Midsummer Marriage, which is consciously modelled on Mozart’s The Magic Flute and follows the marriages of two couples from different social classes. Rhapsody in Blue, which combines classical and jazz influences, established Gershwin’s reputation as a composer and has become a staple of the American repertoire. The programme concludes with Rachmaninov’s final work, the Symphonic Dances, written in America, where the composer lived for over twenty years following the First World War, and indulging in nostalgia for the Russia he had once known.

Most of our work takes place out of the public eye, in an environment that enables our students to explore their individual creative identities. Our masterclasses give you insights into these thought processes, and into the sophisticated technical details that must be perfectly executed to make a performance complete. We are delighted to share them with you, but please note that they do not normally include opportunities for audience participation.

The public are welcome to attend Academy competitions. All details are subject to change, so please visit www.ram.ac.uk/events or contact the Prizes Administrator before travelling: tel 020 7873 7308, email prizes@ram.ac.uk.

VISIT OUR MUSEUM Explore unique instruments, manuscripts and art, and discover behind-the-scenes stories from the Academy, the UK’s oldest conservatoire. • • • • • •

Three themed galleries Temporary exhibitions Guided tours Keyboard demonstrations Special events and lecture-recitals Events for families and children’s trails

The Museum is open weekdays 11.30am–5.30pm and Saturdays 12 noon–4pm (closed December and public holidays). Our current temporary exhibition, The Spencer Collection: A Musical Banquet, is open until Saturday 31 March 2018. The exhibition celebrates Robert Spencer’s important part in the early music revival and his wondrous collection of artefacts held at our Museum. The Spencer Collection is a feast for the senses, particularly rich in the development of plucked string instruments and the early guitar. See a lute from 1585 that may have provided entertainment at a Tudor banquet, and a Panormo guitar from 1848 that was perhaps the favourite instrument of an accomplished young lady. Pique your curiosity with guitar songs printed on playing cards, and with one of only two surviving examples of the handwriting of the great English Renaissance musician John Dowland (1563–1626). Admission is free. More information about the Museum, its collections and activities is available at www.ram.ac.uk/museum. On the ground floor of the Museum, the Academy Chimes shop has a wide range of printed music, books and accessories, as well as Academy-themed gifts. Open weekdays 9am–5.30pm and Saturdays 9am–4pm; tel 020 7873 7400. www.ram.ac.uk/academy-chimes
