HHHHH GREATEST “ One of the greatest musical theatre performances I have ever witnessed” The Daily Telegraph on the West End transfer of End of the Rainbow

HHHHH THRILLING “ A thrilling, illuminating and deeply affecting experience” The Daily Telegraph on our National Theatre productions of Spring Storm and Beyond The Horizon

HHHH SPECIAL “ Something rather special”

We are delighted to introduce our 2011 Subscription Season and invite you to share in the continuing success of your local theatre. We are thrilled that we have just been awarded the prestigious accolade of Regional Theatre of the Year in The Stage 100 Awards. We also recently celebrated wins in two categories at the Theatrical Management Association Awards for 2010, including the Best Director award for our Artistic Director Laurie Sansom for Beyond the Horizon and Spring Storm. This marks a considerable achievement as we become the joint highest winners at the Awards for two consecutive years. We were so proud of our transfer of the Young America season to the National Theatre last year, and to achieve additional acclaim is extremely gratifying. You will shortly be able to catch an upcoming BBC Radio 3 production of Spring Storm, with the original cast and directed by Laurie; listen in on Sunday 6 March. You will no doubt also have seen that the Made in Northampton production of End of the Rainbow has been receiving phenomenal feedback from audiences and critics alike for its West End run. We have high hopes that this season’s productions will match this success. None of this would have been possible without the loyal support of our audiences and so we share these awards, our increasingly visible national profile and our ongoing success with you. Please continue to enjoy the shows on our stages. We look forward to welcoming you back to Royal & Derngate soon.

A NOTE FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

8

Welcome to our 2011 Made in Northampton Season and the launch of our subscription scheme, enabling you to be a part of your theatre’s success more than ever. This year we celebrate the work of iconic British writers, beginning with Daphne du Maurier’s captivating family drama The Years Between, the frenetically funny Diary of a Nobody and Terence Rattigan’s achingly beautiful In Praise of Love – three plays that explore the ludicrous, painful and joyful sides of married life. JB Priestley’s touching Eden End completes our brace of family dramas, following the hilarious hit from the Edinburgh Fringe, Hamlet! The Musical, which was one of the funniest experiences I had in a theatre last year. In the Autumn we follow it with a retelling of Shakespeare’s The Two Gentlemen of Verona, which transports the action to the catwalks of Milan where high style hides desire and corruption, and the world premiere of a shimmering new musical drama based on the classic novel The Go-Between. You can also book now for our celebrated Christmas show; two years ago you voted Alice in Wonderland your top title as a Christmas treat, and we bring you the world premiere of a version written especially for the Royal stage. Expect surreal adventure, talking animals and a riotous journey down the rabbit hole. Thank you for your support as we continue our mission to bring you thrilling, thought-provoking work of the highest quality. We hope that you enjoy the benefits of subscribing to your theatre for a year’s worth of diverse and exciting work, Made in Northampton.

THE YEARS BETWEEN by Daphne du Maurier

10

11

Daphne du Maurier is perhaps best known for her 1938 novel Rebecca, which she subsequently adapted for the stage and which Alfred Hitchcock turned into an Academy Award-Winning film starring Laurence Olivier and Joan Fontaine. Daphne was herself married to a military man, Lieutenant-General Frederick “Tommy” Browning, and has frankly admitted that The Years Between was autobiographical in inspiration. Written in autumn 1943, the play reflected Daphne’s own personal struggle with the separation from her husband during the Second World War. “ The provisional title was The Return of the Soldier, and Daphne certainly saw it as containing a strong message. She described it to Garth Lean as ‘rather sad… the sort of thing that might happen in lots of homes’ without actually acknowledging to him that it was happening, or something like it, in her own” Margaret Forster in the biography Daphne du Maurier: The Secret Life of the Renowned Storyteller

1945. Following the tragic loss of her husband in action, MP’s wife Diana Wentworth and her young son have determinedly rebuilt their lives in rural home-counties England. As a single woman, Diana has found unexpected independence; she has assumed her husband’s seat in parliament and begun a relationship with a local farmer. As the war draws to an end and peace returns to the country, a shock revelation threatens Diana’s new existence to the core. Autobiographically-inspired, The Years Between is one of only two original plays written by Daphne du Maurier, better known as a novelist and particularly as the author of Rebecca and Jamaica Inn. An intriguing family drama, this powerful production directed by Kate Saxon (ETT’s Far From The Madding Crowd) breathes new life into this rarely-performed gem.

DIARY OF A NOBODY

adapted from the original novel by George & Weedon Grossmith by Hugh Osborne

14

15

Journalist John Mullan draws comparisons between Diary of a Nobody and another of the most famous literary diaries in the world. “Sue Townsend’s true predecessor is George and Weedon Grossmith’s lateVictorian Diary of a Nobody, which discovered the comic potential of the form. The diarist, Holloway clerk Charles Pooter, is certainly Adrian Mole’s ancestor, privately convinced that his tastes and abilities single him out from those with whom he must mingle. Pooter’s restriction is class; Adrian’s is age. One episode in The Secret Diary of Adrian Mole seems to imitate one of Pooter’s follies. With his mother fled with her odious lover, and his father sunk in drunken self-pity, he decides to paint his bedroom black. Over the course of five days, tracked exhaustedly by his diary, Adrian puts on coat after coat of black vinyl silk-finish paint, but without being able to conceal the Noddy wallpaper beneath. “Went over hat bells with black felt-tip pen, did sixty-nine tonight, only a hundred and twenty-four to go”. We might think of Pooter who, determined that enamel paint is the latest home fashion, paints every miscellaneous object – the coal scuttle, the servant’s chest of drawers, the bath – bright red!” Excerpts from an article first printed in The Guardian, December 2010

Following last year’s critically acclaimed production of Travels With My Aunt, Gary Sefton returns to Royal & Derngate to direct Robert Daws (The Royal, Outside Edge) as Charles Pooter in this frenetically funny re-telling of the farcical classic. One Charles Pooter of Upper Holloway, a really very ordinary middle-class clerk with lofty social aspirations, has decided that the world deserves to hear his diary – whether they like it or not. He has one night, three actors and an empty stage to impart the dubious anecdotes of his humdrum existence to anyone who will listen. He may be overly uppity and terribly hoity toity, but Pooter’s relentless stream of unwitting, toe-curling social gaffes make it impossible not to warm to this hapless everyman. Adapted from the hilarious comedy of manners by George & Weedon Grossmith, this world premiere sees four men uproariously recreate the trials and tribulations of Pooter’s monotonous marriage and daily grind in Victorian London, resulting in a riotously energetic and physical tour de force.

IN PRAISE OF LOVE by Terence Rattigan

18

19

2011 is the centenary of Terence Rattigan’s birth. The Guardian’s Michael Billington discusses the year’s celebrations. “By instinct, Rattigan was a liberal idealist, but he also craved box-office success. Inevitably, he was demonised by the new Royal Court generation of the mid1950s, and Rattigan did not help his cause by inventing a figure to represent his middle-class audiences: the determinedly middlebrow Aunt Edna. But Rattigan was much subtler than that: he was capable of portraying the inequality of private passion while analysing the state of the nation. In 2011, we should get a much more rounded picture of Rattigan. Less Than Kind offers an intriguing variation on Hamlet, in which the 18-year-old hero returns from evacuation in Canada and is horrified to find his widowed mother shacked up with a wealthy Tory and former member of the war cabinet. The Deep Blue Sea offers a vivid microcosm of a sexually stifling 1950s England. And In Praise of Love is long overdue for reappraisal as a study of the perseverance of passion in the face of death.” Excerpts from an article first printed in The Guardian, January 2011

At once sharply witty and profoundly touching, Terence Rattigan’s In Praise of Love is a compelling study of concealed emotions and the ties that bind. Set against a backdrop of the shifting political scene of the 1970s, this delicate masterpiece explores the complexities of human relationships and intimately exposes the devastating limits of love. Widely regarded as one of the most important playwrights of the 20th Century, 2011 marks the centenary of Terence Rattigan’s birth and this beautifully poignant production is the perfect celebration of one of Britain’s most gifted writers (The Winslow Boy, The Deep Blue Sea). It is directed by Richard Beecham, responsible for Royal & Derngate’s popular production of Humble Boy. “ Few dramatists of this century have written with more understanding of the human heart than Terence Rattigan” The Guardian

HAMLET! THE MUSICAL by Alex Silverman, Timothy Knapman & Edward Jaspers

22

23

Our Artistic Director Laurie Sansom has described Hamlet! The Musical as “one the funniest experiences I had in a theatre last year”. Here’s something to whet your appetite: “ The characters of this our story, You may have heard their names before. They live on this sterile promontory In a place we call Elsinore. Olivier, Gielgud and Branagh Have attempted the Dane on the stage In a quite inappropriate manner For the popular tastes of our age. So we invoke thee our master Lloyd-Webber As we join hands and beg you together Inspire us and guide us, put fire inside us; Make Hamlet a musical play...” Lyrics from Hamlet! The Musical

Venturing where other musicals fear to tread, Hamlet! The Musical is the joyous critically-acclaimed comedy romp that had all of Edinburgh wowed at last year’s Festival Fringe, winning the prestigious award for Audience Favourite Musical. Before a major UK tour, the show that leaves Shakespeare purists choking on their goblets of mead, storms into Northampton for a fortnight of foot-tapping first folio frolics. All of your favourite characters are present and correct, from the sweet Prince Hamlet himself, to crazed Ophelia and the treacherous Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, all galloping through a host of hilarious songs. To be, or not to be? Well, that’s not the question. The real question is – have you got your tickets yet? “Sacrilege! How could they!” Anonymous “ Hamlet’s a hoot! A gloriously executed spoof... wonderfully silly” Daily Mail

Stella Kirby spent nine years running away, leaving home to find her freedom as an celebrated actress. Now she has decided that the only role left to play is prodigal daughter, hoping to discover herself in the familiar surroundings of her childhood home. Premiering at Royal & Derngate in advance of a UK tour, Eden End slowly exposes the cracks in the lives of a respectable Northern family in 1912. A poignant look back at an Edwardian age of innocence before the start of the First World War, this subtle play movingly explores the secret heartache and disappointment of ambition unfulfilled. Having received wide acclaim for his delicate treatment of another rarely performed JB Priestley play The Glass Cage at Royal & Derngate in 2007, Artistic Director Laurie Sansom directs Priestley’s most heartfelt family drama, fresh from his Best Director win at the 2010 Theatrical Management Association Awards for last year’s Young America coupling Spring Storm and Beyond The Horizon. “Priestley at his timeless best” The Telegraph

THE GO-BETWEEN

adapted from the novel by LP Hartley book and lyrics by David Wood and Richard Taylor music by Richard Taylor

34

35

Writer David Wood and composer Richard Taylor are also acclaimed for their individual projects. Richard Taylor is a highly-regarded composer, working across theatre, opera, film and television. “ If you have even the remotest interest in music theatre, don’t miss it. Taylor’s score represents the most auspicious promise of things to come since Howard Goodall’s The Hired Man burst upon the British musicals scene” The Independent on Richard Taylor’s adaptation of Whistle Down The Wind

David Wood has described The Go-Between as his “first ‘grown up’ piece of theatre for many years”, with much of his writing focused on children’s fiction and plays for families. “ David Wood’s sparkling new adaptation of the Roald Dahl classic gets the ear-splitting, roof-raising response it deserves” The Stage on David Wood’s adaptation of George’s Marvellous Medicine at Birmingham Old Rep
