What’s On

Autumn 2022 Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and Cranbourne

While I’m inclined to allow summer an extra month (as argued in my 2014 book, Sprinter and Sprummer: Australia’s Changing Seasons), March does mean that autumn is officially here! Whether it’s this month or soon after, I can’t wait for the colours of autumn leaves and the laughter of children (and older kids such as myself) as they (we) crunch leaves underfoot. What better place to celebrate seasonal change, whenever it occurs, than at Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria. Due to our COVIDSafe settings, I haven’t been out to Cranbourne Gardens for a couple of months now, but I hear the Banksias are about to bloom, the undergrowth grows lush, and the Stringybark Garden is chirping with birdlife. The so-called ‘Wood Wide Web’, the underground network of fungal mycelia, has been enjoying the recent rain with fungal fruiting bodies of all colours, shapes, and sizes emerging throughout the Australian Garden and Conservation Area. Meanwhile, in Melbourne, if you peer into Central Lake you may see female eels before they begin their journey to the Yarra River, the Bay and eventually all the way to the Coral Sea, following in the footsteps (finsteps?) of their male colleagues who migrated earlier in summer. And as always, the Oak Lawn is an essential seasonal highlight. I recommend early morning or later afternoon, as the light catches the turning leaves. This autumnal backdrop pairs perfectly with our self-guided programs such as Flora and the Baron, Seeing the Invisible, Sonica Botanica, and our Seek and Find Nature Cards, all designed to experience the Gardens at your own pace. If you prefer a guided tour, perhaps you would like to discover Open Nature: Histories of the Birrarung with Aboriginal Programs Facilitator Jakobi and Team Leader of Landscape Systems Steven Liu. Presented with Yarra Pools as part of Melbourne Design Week, this program will see you discover the history and importance of the Yarra River to the people of the Kulin Nations, as well as how the Gardens has improved both water quality and efficiency through the Working Wetlands project. Which- and what-ever way you decide to experience this wonderful season, time spent in the Gardens will delight, inspire, and amaze. Thanks! Professor Tim Entwisle Director and Chief Executive

Self-Guided Experiences Sometimes, finding your own way is its own reward. Self-guided journeys at Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne or Cranbourne offer a great way to discover the Gardens at your own pace, in your own time and to suit your mood. Meander through one of the featured Melbourne Gardens’ collections with Sonica Botanica and become absorbed in stories of the people behind the plants; contemplate the complex nature of scientific pursuit as Ferdinand von Mueller’s ghost leads you from the Herbarium to Guilfoyle’s Volcano in the narrative audio tour, Flora and the Baron; grab a friend and journey from Melbourne Gardens to MPavilion, with the special edition Seek and Find MPavilion x RBGV (or challenge yourself to collect and complete all six Seek and Find cards across both Melbourne and Cranbourne Gardens!). Let art be your guide with Seeing the Invisible, whilst imagining all the people in 10 other botanic gardens around the world seeing the same augmented reality artworks as you. The accompanying Families Guide will help you explore and be inspired by the 13 artworks hiding in the Gardens. Take a break away from the rush of life and allow yourself the freedom to experience something different each time you return to the Gardens.

Collected Walks by Tai Snaith Public infrastructure construction meets public art in this beautiful large-scale work by Melbourne artist, Tai Snaith, produced especially for the hoardings around what will become the new ANZAC Station. Created in response to the State Botanical Collection at the National Herbarium of Victoria, Tai’s work is inspired by the layers of memory created through the process of building collections over time. She uses an instinctive process of assemblage to collect and arrange pieces by colour, shape and form. This collaboration between Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne and Metro Tunnel Creative Program has transformed the ANZAC Station construction site into a beautiful, Instagram-worthy art piece. View these stunning works during your next stroll around the Botanic Gardens precinct. Presented by Metro Tunnel Creative Program in partnership with Royal Botanic Gardens Victoria.
