My Mother’s Funeral: The Show

Mon 30 September - Tue 1 October 8pm

Abigail’s mum is dead. But it turns out she can’t afford her to be.

Did you know how expensive it is to die? It’s £4000 for the funeral. Extra for flowers. And even more if you want sausage rolls. Otherwise, she will get a council funeral and an unmarked grave.

Then, when a theatre suddenly pulls out of Abigail’s new project, she is asked to write about something else. Something more raw, from her ‘unique working class lens’. Something that will make the audience feel really, really bad about themselves. Audiences like that, apparently.

Yep. To afford the funeral, she has to write about her mum. With power and playfulness, Kelly Jones’s new play tackles the inequalities around death, and the cost of turning your loved ones into art.

A Paines Plough, Mercury Theatre, Belgrade Theatre, Landmark Theatres and Royal & Derngate, Northampton co-production.

Bursaries

With thanks to revenue generated through Friends & Patron memberships, and donations from customers and Business Supporters, we are able to offer our Core Create and Sparks sessions at a reduced fee of £50 (usually £80). We also offer a sibling discount, so if you have two siblings taking part in activities, the termly fee for the second child/young person would only be £25.

For families living with financial hardship, we would not want the termly fees to prevent your child or young person being able to take part, so we have a limited amount of free, bursaryfunded places. If you are a business or individual who can afford to support our Bursary scheme, please email kate@ thecorecorby.com

Please email getinvolved@ thecorecorby.com for further information.

Core Community Panel

Your Theatre, Your Decisions!

Our Community Panel represents a wide cross section of the community, and together they are helping us shape the future shows and activities that take place at The Core.

As you browse through the brochure, look out for shows that carry the community panel’s badge of approval, these shows have been selected by the panel.

Education

The Core has updated its school and college partnership offer to create yet more opportunities for staff and students to get involved in creative activity.

Our workshop menu supports all areas of the curriculum for primary, secondary and SEND schools and can offer specialist arts provision by creative professionals in areas including dance, drama, technical theatre, creative writing, music, stage combat, VR and special effects make up.

Schools can join the partnership at bronze, silver and gold levels, and benefits include access to free Continued Professional Development (CPD) sessions, a bespoke workshop programme, reduced price theatre tickets for school groups, attendance at careers and arts events, involvement in the Royal Opera House creative programme and becoming part of the RSC’s associated schools programme. The Core continues to be an Arts Mark partnership organisation so we can support schools on their Arts Mark journeys and with Arts Award.

Royal Opera House

Continuing our partnership with the Royal Opera House for a second academic year, we will offer three strands of CPD and creative programmes for schools throughout 2024-2025: Create & Sing, Create & Design and Create & Dance

Participation in this programme is free and the first CPD for Create & Sing takes place on Wed 2 October.

Royal Shakespeare Company

Becoming an associate school with the RSC enables staff to access the rehearsal room method in their classrooms which has been proven to improve attendance, vocabulary and overall engagement with Shakespeare and learning.

Associate schools will also become part of regular cluster meetings and receive reduced price tickets on First Encounters shows to support a student’s introduction to Shakespeare. The first CPD takes place on Tue 12 November.

To register your school’s interest or for more information about any of the above, please email lindsey@thecorecorby.com

Returns And Exchanges

We are unable to exchange or refund tickets after they are purchased, unless an event is cancelled or rescheduled due to circumstances beyond our control, or where there is a material change to the programme of the event.
