Welcome
Our Autumn-Winter 2008-2009 Season spans two and a half thousand years of theatre! From ancient Greece to Russia travelling through Salford and Merton-cum-Middlewick to contemporary Canada. The Season has a strong international flavour coupled with the best of the North West old and new, and some startling new writing. The family is a central theme to our programme. There is a venerable Royal Exchange saying that all great plays are family plays at heart. It is blood relationships that animate, illuminate and define us. Certainly these plays are bursting with sisters, brothers, fathers, mothers, sons and daughters- with a few random vicars thrown in. Through these different families the plays range far and wide in their explorations of domestic life, the nature of our society and the big questions of existence. Our plays are funny, lyrical, tragic and farcical and they are all propelled by familial warmth and passion.
Two Theatres ~ One Building Housing one of the most unusual theatre spaces in the country and the intriguingly different Studio space, the Victorian Cotton Exchange is a hub for those wanting to find out more about the Arts in the city and beyond. The Theatre is seven-sided, glass-walled and suspended from huge marble pillars. Not one of the 760 seats is more than nine metres from the circular stage. Great views, wherever you sit.
We’re fired up by the prospect of directing these plays. We hope you will be able to share the excitement with us.
The Studio transforms for every show, with seating that moves to fit the design. The 90 seats are unreserved and you can take your drinks into the auditorium.
Braham Murray, Greg Hersov and Sarah Frankcom Artistic Directors
Tours: ÂŁ3. Guided backstage tours for each show. Dates on show pages. Book through Box Office.
Please note that, under the SMOKE FREE law, performers on stage are exempt and there may be smoking in some of our productions. 02~03

Danny Diva
The Endurance
Written by Russell Barr Music by Tayo Akinbode Directed by Garry Robson
Performed by Ben Faulks Directed by Al Seed
Danny, a coal miner’s son finds his inner swan. As a Drag Queen.
A welcome return to The Studio for MEN award- winning Ben Faulks who presents a specially re-developed working of THE ENDURANCE under the direction of his original collaborator, Al Seed.
He’s a deaf drag queen who loves to sing. He joins a drag troupe. He is the star. It's the early nineties, and he dies. It's before the pills. Danny Diva dies of AIDS. His Mummy is devastated and sets off, with her small pink fifties suitcase, to inferno, in search of her boy. She meets Virgil, the poet. Inferno is not like she expects. It’s the roller disco, in Central Park NYC. Off they go through the seven circles of hell, and several super big musical numbers, looking for Danny.....
An old man hauls an equally ancient and broken piano along rusting train tracks. His energy is spent and the faceless entity that pursues is almost upon him, and yet, round the next bend, maybe….? This extraordinary one-man show draws on the tradition of the travelling player and the expeditions of Scott and Shackleton to tell a tale of survival in the face of impossible odds and unstoppable ambition fuelled by tea and mint cake. Tickets £9.50/£6.50

Luke Wright, Poet & Man
Written by Claire Macdonald
Written by Luke Wright Directed by James Grieve
A man and a woman meet on a train. She pours coffee. He drinks brandy. She smokes for the first time in years. He smiles. Through the night, they exchange memories, stories, and secrets. When the sun rises, everything has changed forever… With nods to classic French film, winks to Romantics and pouts at Surrealists, CORRESPONDENCE is a travelogue of intimacy, betrayal and the invisible borders we cross to reach someone who is just close enough to touch. Fresh from success at the Edinburgh Festival, CORRESPONDENCE introduces Menagerie, one of the UK’s premiere new writing companies who champion great characters, highly original writing and superb theatricality. All in all, a treat, a wonder and a delight! Tickets £9.50/£6.50
2007 4Talent Award winner Luke Wright is one of the UK’s leading stand-up poets. After a storming run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2007, his new show now tours the UK. Married and mortgaged at 25, Wright looks at what it takes to be a proper grown-up chap in the 21st Century, featuring sharp stand-up and his trademark blistering verse. “Everyone should see and hear Luke Wright” Time Out Suitable for age 14+ Tickets £9.50/£6.50

The Common People
A Momentum collaboration with Malou Airaudo (Pina Bausch, Tanztheater) and Tanya Khabarova (DEREVO). Commissioned by the Liverpool Culture Company Capital of Culture, this is the third part of Momentum's trilogy on the exploration of life. ANIMA is based on dreams and explores the dynamics between the conscious and subconscious. Using Momentum’s trademark physicality and innovative lighting, together with aerial elements and an original soundtrack, this piece examines the blurred line between dream and reality. Visually enthralling and deeply evocative, ANIMA takes us on a surreal journey into the twin worlds we inhabit, exploring the conflict and harmony within each of us. “Visually stunning, artistically inspired ... physical theatre of the very highest standard.” Chris High, The Stage “Rarefied…intriguing…pure and beautiful…performed with exquisite precision” The Guardian Tickets £9.50/£6.50 20~21

The Man Who Planted Trees
Up UpOn OnThe TheRoof Roof
A captivating adaptation of Jean Giono’s environmental cult classic.
“When this old world starts getting me down…..” Inspired by the Drifters’ 1962 recording of Goffin and King’s song, and Maura Dooley’s poem of the same name, UP ON THE ROOF is the latest project in our Community Partnership Programme.
A French shepherd sets out with his dog to plant a forest and transform a barren wasteland. As war rages across Europe, their young forest comes under threat … A unique blend of comedy, puppetry and storytelling, with sensory effects creating scents, wind and rain. An inspiring and unforgettable story that shows us the difference one man (and his dog!) can make to the world. For adults and children aged 7+ (though most 5s & 6s will love it too). ‘Laughs, heartbreak, war, regeneration, scented breezes, sparkling wit, the best dog puppet ever. Perfect for children and grown-ups. Terrific.’ The Guardian Tickets £9.50/£6.50 Under 13s £4.00
Working with community groups across Greater Manchester, the scheme aims to reach people who may not otherwise feel that theatre is for them, and to give participants a genuine ownership of this theatre. Our latest project brings together two diverse groups, each of whom has worked with Exchange Education to develop a unique response to this single stimulus. Come and see what’s UP ON THE ROOF. Cast Yourself in a Supporting Role The Development Fund The Royal Exchange is a major theatrical force in this country - producing work to the very highest artistic standards and developing nationally acclaimed education, community and new writing programmes. To sustain this level of work, the company relies on the generosity and support of individuals - people prepared to stake a claim in the future of the theatre and contribute to the Development Fund. Making a small monthly donation can make a real difference, giving access to a range of benefits which include ‘Behind The Scenes’ Newsletters (twice a year), invitations to Special Events and Galas, Backstage Tours, Discounts, Programme Acknowledgement, Priority Booking* and Seat and Floor Plaques* (* available at higher levels of support) Making Your Mark For those wanting to help the company and really make a lasting impression, the Royal Exchange offers supporters its Seat and Floor Plaque schemes. The scheme is a perfect way to celebrate a special occasion, birthday, anniversary, or a business milestone. Levels of support include £500 for an inscription on a plaque fixed to the back of a seat in the auditorium and £1,000 for an inscription on a plaque on the floor of the Great Hall. Want to support us? Please contact 0161 615 6752 or email development@royalexchange.co.uk for further details. “The Royal Exchange is unique, truly the jewel in Manchester’s cultural crown” David McKeith, Senior Partner PricewaterhouseCoopersFounder Corporate Member and Sponsor
