Royal Exchange Theatre

Exchange 2010~2011 Autumn~Winter

Welcome Our programme of plays really gives a sense of what we’re all about. We've always been inspired by three periods of theatre history. The Greeks, the Elizabethans and late 19th century Europe. We are starting the Season with three great plays from each of these periods which are profound explorations of the human condition. We've always been proud of our North Western roots and we have a classic Manchester School play for the festive period. We are also a new writing theatre and by the end of this Season, we will have produced 137 premieres. To start 2011 we're delighted and excited to present two of the prize-winning plays from our recent Bruntwood Playwriting Competition. Both are first plays by new, original voices (one North Western) with something to say and a real theatrical talent for saying it. As well as our Season of plays our building is a hive of activity with many different and diverse events for your interest and pleasure. We thank you for your support and look forward to sharing this work with you. Braham Murray, Greg Hersov and Sarah Frankcom Artistic Directors

Doctor Faustus By Christopher Marlowe

The Theatre 8 September ~ 9 October 2010

Directed by Toby Frow Designed by Ben Stones

Half Price Previews 8, 9, 10 September

“I do repent; and yet I do despair; Hell strives with grace within my breast: What shall I do to shun the snares of death?” When Doctor Faustus’ desire for power and knowledge leads him to conjure up the demon Mephistopheles, he finds himself offered the ultimate bargain: he will be granted everything he desires for 24 years, but at the end of that time will have to hand his soul over to the devil. So begins a hedonistic journey in time and space as Faustus turns the world into his playground. But wherever he goes and the clock ticks down to his final damnation, he is followed by the shadow of his infernal bargain in Christopher Marlowe's STUNNING and SAVAGE tragedy. Did you know? It is often claimed that there are only really seven stories in the world. DOCTOR FAUSTUS, and the story of the debt that must be repaid, is one of these archetypes.

Directed by Greg Hersov Designed by Laurie Dennett

Half Price Previews 7, 8, 9, 10 December

“Things always do go wrong with me, and they’ve been going the wrongest road they could, but, by gum, there’s just a chance to put them right this time.” When her wealthy, unmarried niece Virginia comes to stay, Mrs. Munning is desperate to show that her golden boy, son Paul is prime husband material, and turn the family’s fast-developing money worries into a thing of the past. But for their increasingly elaborate scheme to have any chance of success, they must keep Paul’s unconventional, underachieving younger brother Zack out of the way and out of trouble, and that proves to be anything but easy in Harold Brighouse’s TENDER and HILARIOUS comedy classic. Did you know? One of the celebrated Manchester School of Writers, Harold Brighouse was born in Eccles. Brighouse’s most famous play HOBSON’S CHOICE sold out at the Royal Exchange seven years ago.

“I’m going to give you one more chance to tell the truth. So think very carefully about what you say...” When white secondary school teacher Amanda is pushed to the ground by black student Jason, she’s reluctant to report it as she knows exclusion could condemn him to a future as troubled as his past. Once the boy and his peers have decided to protect themselves by spinning a story of their own, Amanda finds herself sucked into a vortex of lies in which victim becomes perpetrator. English Touring Theatre presents Omar in

New Art Club present

Lovesong

This is Now

Written and directed by Ché Walker Music by Omar Lyefook

Devised and Performed by Tom Roden and Pete Shenton

I wanna be your man from now till I'm put in the ground... Soul singer Oscar lives in the fast lane. Easy come, easy go. Easy women and no questions asked. He pays for sex and pays for drugs but there’s something missing. Brooding over what might have been, he is forced to reflect on a life lived recklessly, and is taken by surprise finding love where he could never have expected…

It’s 1983 - Madonna releases her first album, Boy George’s Culture Club is top of the UK singles chart with Karma Chameleon, and 13 year old future contemporary dance star Tom Roden illegally tapes the first ‘Now That’s What I Call Music’ LP onto a C60 cassette. Fast forward 27 years - Madonna is a divorcee on a mission to adopt Africa, Boy George has been in prison on an abduction charge and Tom has teamed up with Pete Shenton to form New Art Club. Finding the cassette one day, the two of them listen to it and a brand new show is born.

Featuring his own music and lyrics, this unmissable one-man show is performed by soul legend Omar founder of nu-classic British Soul - who again joins forces with award-winning writer/director, Ché Walker following their triumphant collaboration last year on the soul/funk musical BEEN SO LONG (Young Vic London, Latitude & Edinburgh Festivals)

Join Britain’s funniest dance duo as they deconstruct this first ever Now album and jump headlong into the dark pool of days gone by and come out covered in a filthy 80’s gunk. Wrestling with classic hits from Bonnie Tyler and Duran Duran, amongst others, will Tom and Pete be able to save the audience from drowning in nostalgia?

‘Soul star Omar endows the genre with street cred’ Independent on Sunday on BEEN SO LONG

‘A slick, warmly delivered, bloody funny slice of modern dance-meets-comedy fun’ The List

by Alan Bissett Directed by Cheryl Martin (THE CHING ROOM) & Sacha Kyle (THE MOIRA MONOLOGUES) A double bill of monologues, performed and written by Alan Bissett, one of Scotland’s most exciting young writers. THE CHING ROOM When you've got to go, you've got to go. But not if you're Rory, and there's a weird and dangerous stranger in the cubicle who seems to know too much about your secrets. Rory realises too late the peril he's in and, even worse, starts to like it. Can Rory escape before the stranger tempts him into crossing a line that will change his life forever? THE MOIRA MONOLOGUES A series of stories from Falkirk's hardest woman, Moira Bell. Whether defending her 'snookelums pookelums' from the local rottweiler, attempting to seduce a teacher in the school where she works as a cleaner, or belting out Diana Ross for the Scotia karaoke night, Moira is hilarious and heartwarming company. News From Nowhere presents A Royal Court Theatre Production

Love, Love, Love By Mike Bartlett A Paines Plough / Drum Theatre Plymouth production Directed by James Grieve 1967. Kenneth and Sandra know the world is changing. And they want some of it. LOVE, LOVE, LOVE takes on the baby boomer generation as it retires, and finds it full of trouble. Smoking, drinking, affectionate and paranoid, one couple’s forty-year journey from initial burst to full bloom. Mike Bartlett’s play COCK won an Olivier Award in 2010. James Grieve is co-Artistic Director of Paines Plough.

3 November at 6pm Come To Where I’m From Before the Wednesday evening performance of LOVE LOVE LOVE, a special presentation of monologues commissioned by Paines Plough and the Royal Exchange Theatre from local writers, inspired by their memories and experiences of their home town. Part of a Paines Plough nationwide project examining if home is really where the heart is. Tickets £5. See royalexchange.co.uk for more details.

The Author by Tim Crouch Directed by Karl James & a smith Cast Tim Crouch, Chris Goode, Vic Llewellyn, Esther Smith ‘I have the choice to continue. I have the choice to stop’. Settle back into the warmth of the theatre. Relax as the story unfolds. For you. With you. Of you. A story of hope, violence, togetherness and exploitation. Laugh with the actors, tap your feet to the music, take a chocolate, turn to your neighbour. You’re here. Tim Crouch’s new play is about the harm carried out in the name of art. Performed within its audience, it tells the story of another play: a shocking and abusive play written by a playwright called Tim Crouch who oversteps the line. THE AUTHOR is a highly original and terrifyingly seductive journey into the horror of our mediated world. ‘A dazzling theatrical experience that lets nobody off the hook, opening our eyes to what should be blindingly obvious: we all have a choice.’ **** The Guardian Contains material that may be disturbing.
