Welcome Welcome to the Spring - Summer Season here at the Exchange. Our programme is based around the theme WHO ARE YOU? In these plays human identity is sculpted, manipulated, transformed, programmed, exotically disguised - extremely confusing and thoroughly malleable. By turns witty, nightmarish, farcical, abrasive, magical and incisive, all of them tell stories of people trying to find their true identity in a shifting world. In this brochure there is a special focus on The Studio, where we produce and present work that is new and different and encourage our audiences to participate and explore how wide the possibilities of theatre can be. We would like to thank you all for your continued support of our work. Braham Murray, Greg Hersov and Sarah Frankcom Artistic Directors

In a world where cheap entertainment keeps the proles ignorant but content, where a war without end is always fought and Big Brother is always watching, can Winston possibly hold onto what he feels inside? Or will he renounce everything, accept The Party’s reality and learn to love Big Brother, in this world premiere of Matthew Dunster’s SENSUAL and SENSITIVE adaptation of George Orwell’s classic.

The Dreadful Hours
The Boy Who Ran From The Sea
Directed by Javier Marzan (Peepolykus) Script by Chris Fittock Energised, ambitious, and intoxicated with a perfect summer of technicolour love, they feel extraordinary, and long to have the world at their feet. But what happens when the summer ends, and the realities of suburban malaise begin to stifle the first sparks of limitless love? Combining Tmesis Theatre’s trademark physicality and striking visuals with new writing from acclaimed North West Playwright Chris Fittock, THE DREADFUL HOURS is a darkly comic drama exploring the quiet disintegration of aspirational love through the lifetime of one couple’s relationship.
During Autumn 2009 our writing, designing, directing and performance projects for 14 - 19 year olds offered 67 young people the opportunity to explore the creative and technical processes of making theatre. Since January, Royal Exchange professionals from lighting, sound, set design, production and stage management have mentored members of the groups whilst a further 30 young people have worked with us to direct and perform this evening of fresh, original work, inspired by ideas of location, a sense of place and the search for home. The Young People’s Theatre Workshop is supported by the John Thaw Foundation. Tickets £6.50 full price / £4 all concessions

Handful Of Henna
The World’s Wife
Written by Rani Moorthy Directed by Karen Simpson
Adapted from the poems of Carol Ann Duffy. Performed by Linda Marlowe. Directed by Di Sherlock.
Being dragged by her mother back to the family village thousands of miles away is no fun for 13-year-old Nasreen. In the monsoon rain, surrounded by wagging tongues of relatives and not being able to text friends, the mystical power of henna leads to unexpected events. Based on real stories from Muslim women this is an evocative and enchanting story of homecoming, adventure, fear and joy for a girl and her mother.
A new stage version of the acclaimed poetry collection by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy, imagining the wives’ perspective of famous men through the ages.
Based in Manchester, Rasa’s work has toured extensively throughout the UK. Their acclaimed show CURRY TALES became an international hit, and was also broadcast on BBC Radio 4. ‘* * * * An incomparable story teller’ The Guardian on SHADES OF BROWN ‘Astonishingly moving…rarely have I seen such talent or such intimate contact with the pulse of this nation’ The Independent on CURRY TALES
From Mrs Faust and Frau Freud to Queen Kong and Mrs Midas, this delightful show slices through history and myth, whilst also casting an astute glance over the modern world. Laced with dark humour and acerbic wit, this passionate exposé will enthral lovers of Duffy’s poems and newcomers alike. Linda Marlowe has enjoyed great acclaim for her previous solo work including Berkoff’s Women, which toured internationally and played West End seasons. ‘Performed with awesome style and confidence by the splendid Linda Marlowe. Joyfully refreshing. Do go and see this: it's wonderful.' The Observer

Carol Ann Duffy & Friends
No Idea
Three special evenings of poetry and music presented by Manchester's well loved Poet Laureate. Carol Ann will be reading her own work and presenting some of the country's very best newly emerging talent - each evening will also feature a guest appearance from a poet of national stature, details to be confirmed.
Created by Lisa Hammond, Rachael Spence and Lee Simpson. Directed by Lee Simpson Designed by Ben Stones
In association with The Writing School at Manchester Metropolitan University.
If they were in a show, can you imagine what kind of show it would be? What would the story be? Who would you choose to play the main character? Who would you choose to be the funny one?
Take a look at the women in the picture. Their names are Rachael and Lisa.
Armed with a tape recorder, Rachael and Lisa went on to the streets and asked people what they thought their show should be about. What they heard and recorded was funny, heartfelt, sometimes staggering but always very very revealing about what we can (and can’t) imagine when we look at someone. Love Intifada by Mojisola Adebayo It's Summer on the West Bank. Two young women are living in a town under occupation. From the isolation of their bedroom they watch TV, surf the net, debate art, politics, philosophy and swear their love affair to secrecy. When the women discover the story of Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore, infamous lesbian surrealist artists at the centre of the World War II resistance movement on the island of Jersey, they are inspired. As the bulldozers roll in and the bombs rain down, the wall rises up and the war rages on, the women have an intifada of the imagination. The lovers step out and invoke a quiet revolution.

Love And War
Once In A Lifetime
In his startling new work Mark Bruce uses theatre-inthe-round and a soundtrack including Sparklehorse, The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age and György Ligeti, to plunge the imagination into a raw arena of the otherworld. Time shifts and figures from myth and ritual collide; Gods emerge amongst frenzied cheerleaders, murderous strangers, dogs of war and bedraggled homecoming queens, in a heart-searching dance work of savage beauty.
And you may ask yourself, “Well, how did I get here?”
LOVE AND WAR is the Mark Bruce Company’s latest full-length production since its critically acclaimed SEA OF BONES.

If only for two nights, we were magicians.” Participant in The Fusebox Project. Tickets £6.50 full price / £4 all concessions
“Bruce's choreography has never looked more inventive, with classically based moves twisted into ferocious gestures of destruction or strung out into decadent ennui. The dancers are excellent.” The Guardian Suitable for age 13+
