SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING by Alan Sillitoe, stage adaptation by Matthew Dunster

Directed by Matthew Dunster

Box Office 0845 450 4808 Website royalexchange.co.uk

Half Price Previews 1 & 2 March Back Stage Tour Wednesday 7 March 11am

“Don’t let the bastards grind you down!”

Rebellious young factory worker Arthur Seaton has reasons to drink, reasons to fight and several girls on the go. But when the fun and risk of Saturday night turns to the hangover and bruises of Sunday morning, Arthur starts to understand the real meaning of love. By turns heart-warming, ferocious and comic, SATURDAY NIGHT AND SUNDAY MORNING won huge acclaim for its brutally honest portrayal of life in Nottingham in the 50s. Alan Sillitoe’s iconic novel is transformed into a spectacular new stage version by Matthew Dunster, whose previous successes at the Exchange include his own adaptation of George Orwell’s 1984 and the award-winning MOGADISHU.

Sweden, 1894. Midsummer night’s celebrations are in full swing but the Count’s daughter, the beautiful and imperious Miss Julie, feels trapped and alone. Downstairs in the servants’ kitchen, handsome and rebellious footman Jean is feeling restless. When they meet a passion is ignited that soon spirals out of control. Strindberg’s masterpiece caused a scandal when first produced – and has been hugely popular ever since – for its searingly honest portrait of the class system and human sexuality. MAXINE PEAKE plays Miss Julie. Known for her television appearances in SILK and SHAMELESS, she is reunited with director Sarah Frankcom, whose recent successes at the Exchange include the award-winning PUNK ROCK and A VIEW FROM THE BRIDGE.

“I can resist everything except temptation”

Young, rich, beautiful and newly married, Lady Windermere seems to have it all. The Royal Exchange and Tangere Arts

A THOUSAND SLIMY THINGS

Based on THE RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER by Samuel Taylor Coleridge “Water, water, everywhere And all the boards did shrink Water, water, everywhere Nor any drop to drink”

Imagine you are going to a wedding, when a crumpled old man with glittering eyes and a huge beard stops you in your tracks and starts to tell you a crime story, set on the High Seas - a tale of death, doom and destruction that takes you deep down into the murky depths of your imagination. Will you dare to follow him? And if you do, will you ever be the same again? Coleridge’s classic poem is transformed into a swashbuckling adventure, awash with live music and highly physical comedy by Tangere Arts, who have previously delighted children and adults alike with HOOD IN THE WOOD, A TASTY TALE and TIN SOLDIER. For all brave souls over nine years old.

BAGLADY

DNA a compelling thriller by award winning writer Dennis Kelly

Directed by Marleen Vermeulen

by Frank McGuinness Directed by Thusitha Jayasundra

Directed and Designed by Anthony Banks (National Theatre)

Young Goldilocks likes to explore the world and experience new things. This time, when she wanders into an empty house, she finds much more than three bowls of porridge… But what will happen when the Bears return and find her? Using table-top puppetry and musical influences from around the world, this production brings this classic story to life with a twist. For 2 ~ 5 year olds

‘BAGLADY lives on the edge of the river and on the edge of sanity. She unfolds her story in voices mirroring her broken life with pitiful yet comedic eloquence. Is she a figure of fun, or will she haunt your dreams?’ After their previous award-winning success IRON, Workin Girls return with another thought-provoking English premiere.

A group of teenagers do something bad, really bad, then panic and cover the whole thing up. But when they find that the coverup unites them and brings harmony to their otherwise fractious lives, where’s the incentive to put things right? First performed at the National Theatre, this startling new play is fast becoming a contemporary classic with young audiences and has recently become a core set-text on the GCSE English syllabus. ‘Punchy without being preachy; tackles moral issues without moralising - Dennis Kelly offers a witty take on the dark side of group mentality.’ Independent

CRAVE

MUSTAFA A classic supernatural thriller with a modern twist.

THE PIRATE PROJECT

TENDER NAPALM

by Sarah Kane. Directed by Ramin Gray

by Naylah Ahmed Directed by Janet Steele

Created by Lucy Foster and the company, A co-production with Improbable

by Philip Ridley Directed by David Mercatali

Designed by Lizzie Clachan, with sound by Alex Caplen, CRAVE is a contemporary classic and a ground-breaking work that challenges notions of what makes a play.

Mustafa is in prison for the death of a teenage boy during an exorcism. Racked with guilt at the loss of an innocent life and isolated in a world where his beliefs are constantly challenged, he tries to avoid trouble. But when prisoners who taunt him suffer mysterious injuries and prison officers start behaving strangely, Mustafa realises the djinn (evil spirit) he tried to banish from the young victim’s body is still with him and he must face it once more...

Fanciful stagings of the escapades of Anne Bonny, Mary Read, and Ching Shih - swashbuckling female pirates of the past - combine with intimate stories of personal piracy in the performers’ own lives. See these bloodthirsty damsels out-sail, out-think, and out-fight every man on the high seas.

One of the most acclaimed London premieres of 2011, Time Out and Evening Standard Award-winner Philip Ridley’s extraordinary new play Tender Napalm arrives at the Royal Exchange on a UK tour.

Not seen professionally in England since 2001, when the original Paines Plough production was revived at the Royal Court Theatre, Actors Touring Company takes a fresh look at this landmark of modern international theatre in a major new production for the 21st century. Olivier award-winning Actors Touring Company’s recent productions include The Golden Dragon, Ivan and the Dogs, Eurydice, and The Brothers Size.

‘Most enjoyably inventive piece of theatre I’ve seen this year’ The Guardian on Behna

In The Pirate Project three women set sail in search of their inner pirate. Expect sword fights, theatrical storms and cross dressing aplenty. Ha Harrrr! ‘A delightful piece of theatre....’ The Stage on Lucy’s show, Oh My Green Soap Box

Re-setting the auditorium into traverse, the audience face each other on either side of this intimate, explosive and poetic exploration of love in the face of catastrophe. ‘Magnificent... a fine, fiery romance’ - Observer **** ‘Heart-stopping… wildly intoxicating’ The Times **** ‘Viciously funny… sensationally staged’ The Guardian ‘Unforgettable’ Time Out (Critics Choice) 18 | 19

RELAX & ENJOY THE EXCHANGE Welcome to the Great Hall... We are now open seven days a week, for you to enjoy eating, drinking and relaxing whenever you’re in town - whether meeting friends or just wanting a calm airy space to browse the net, read a book, meet business colleagues or do some work. The Great Hall café is open Monday - Saturday from 9.30am to 7.30pm for coffee, cakes or a wholesome filling homemade pie or snack. The Round restaurant is open every lunchtime from 12 noon to 2pm and pre-theatre for a meal. Both spaces are now open on Sundays from 11am ~ 5pm ~ for Sunday Brunch. Check menus or reserve your table in The Round online at royalexchange.co.uk, or call 0161 615 6666. With free entertainment on a Friday from 6pm and on most Sundays from 2pm, free exhibitions in the Craft Shop cabinets and the Mezzanine Gallery, videos and talks with show Directors in the Great Hall and Education Lounge, there is always something happening. See the Diary for the dates of our Hard Hat Sundays – a chance to see behind the scenes as we change the set for the next show. We have FREE WI-FI in The Hall.
