Welcome We’re very pleased with this forthcoming Spring/Summer season. We have a wide spectrum of dramatic experiences mixing great classics with substantial new writing and an exciting collaboration with the Manchester International Festival. While we were planning the season the economic situation in the country significantly changed. For us, this theatre has always been a place where people can come for a communal experience that in some way illuminates and strengthens the lives we lead. One of the theories regarding the origins of the superstitions revolving around The Scottish Play is that Shakespeare used genuine spells in the text, and this caused witches to put a curse on all future productions as punishment for revealing their secrets.

Little Leap Forward tells the childhood story of internationally acclaimed Chinese flautist, Guo Yue, during the Cultural Revolution in China. It is Horse + Bamboo Theatre Company’s latest family show, following the award-winning IN THE SHADOW OF TREES, and is based on Guo Yue’s autobiography (co-written with Clare Farrow) published in 2008 by Barefoot Books. “Some days we are the birds in the sky and others we are the statues below them”.
Since September 2008 we have led taster workshops and one-to-one sessions with over 150 young Muslim playwrights, aged 16 - 25. Most had never before tried to write a play scene; all were keen to give it a try. We’ve held workshops at the Royal Exchange and in schools and community centres across Greater Manchester, and everyone who has taken part has been invited to submit their work to us.

How do stories find a home? Our regular group for 14 – 19 year olds has been meeting since Autumn 2008 to explore the creative and technical processes of making theatre. Through a programme of professional mentoring, workshops and ensemble-building sessions, they have developed skills in a wide range of theatre arts including writing, set design, lighting, sound design, performance and stage management. Inspired by Reinhardt Jung’s novel, Bambert’s Book of Missing Stories, the 30 group members have worked together to create this original piece of theatre.
When a woman and her teenage son reach breaking point, they set off on an extraordinary journey, away from their everyday lives and out, out, out into the world, where anything is possible. A beautiful and engaging work, unblinkingly unsentimental, funny, alarming and provocative. Developed by Manchester based theatre company Coal, in association with director John Wright from an idea by performer Annie Fitzmaurice. Suitable for ages 13+
