Welcome We’re very pleased with this forthcoming Spring/Summer season. We have a wide spectrum of dramatic experiences mixing great classics with substantial new writing and an exciting collaboration with the Manchester International Festival. While we were planning the season the economic situation in the country significantly changed. For us, this theatre has always been a place where people can come for a communal experience that in some way illuminates and strengthens the lives we lead. We thank you for supporting the Exchange and hope very much you can continue in these potentially tough times ahead to enjoy what we have to offer.

Macbeth By William Shakespeare Directed by Matthew Dunster Designed by Paul Wills “Stars, hide your fires! Let not light see my black and deep desires.” When the triumphant soldier Macbeth discovers he’s destined to be the next King of Scotland, he and Lady Macbeth decide to risk their own souls in a desperate attempt to gain the whole world in Shakespeare’s DARK, DEVASTATING and GRIPPING tragedy. Did you know? One of the theories regarding the origins of the superstitions revolving around The Scottish Play is that Shakespeare used genuine spells in the text, and this caused witches to put a curse on all future productions as punishment for revealing their secrets.

The Pianist Based on the memoirs of Wladyslaw Szpilman Directed by Neil Bartlett Conceived by Mikhail Rudy The Royal Exchange Theatre presents the Manchester International Festival Production "the tale of an improbable triumph over tragedy, and much to be recommended" **** The Times "Rudy's reputation alone would be enough to buy your ticket, but there's so much more ... Peter Guinness ... delivers the words quite brilliantly" Manchester Evening News

The Theatre 17 ~ 27 June

BSL Interpreted Performance Saturday 27 June at 8pm Exchange Education • Online Resources THE PIANIST is not part of the Season Ticket. Ticket prices and show times are different for this production. See page 30 and Diary for details.

Best known as an Oscar-winning film by Roman Polanski, this is the remarkably evocative story of one man’s time in the Warsaw Ghetto during the Nazi Occupation, first seen as part of the inaugural Manchester International Festival in 2007. In a repeat of the acclaimed performance by Peter Guinness, narrating Szpilman’s orginal text and Mikhail Rudy playing the ravishing music of Chopin, this moving account is a powerful story of suffering, strength and survival that gains extra resonance from the intimate surroundings of the Royal Exchange Theatre.

A Royal Exchange Theatre / Manchester International Festival Co-production “You walk in, and there they all are, all these ladies, all dressed up ... all sitting there in complete silence ... I mean, you do sometimes wonder what’s going on inside their heads ...” The moment charismatic caller Frankeh enters the bingo hall, he's determined to give his ladies a great night out - problem is, the new manageress won’t stop banging on about profit margins and for every winner there just has to be a roomful of losers, but it's gotta happen, happen sometime, so maybe this time, it could be YOU in Neil Bartlett’s GLORIOUS, ALL-SINGING and ALL-DANCING devised collaboration with the Royal Exchange and Manchester International Festival.

0.0008 By Sonia Hughes Presented by the Royal Exchange Theatre and Weeding Cane “How many times a day are you remembered, do you think? What do people recall about you? Are they right? Does it matter? What if no-one has remembered you today or yesterday, what if we have all been forgotten by the end of tomorrow? Or next year, or fifty years or a thousand years? Does it matter?”

The Studio 8 ~ 18 July

Exchange Education • Pre-show Student Workshops • Workshop day for Adults • Teacher CPD

When the universe is a million million million million million miles edge-to-edge - or would be if it had edges - how come our own thoughts and feelings matter so much? How can life break our hearts? And how can the best moments last forever? Sonia Hughes turns The Studio into poetry in an attempt to find out in this MAGICAL, UNFORGETTABLE and UPLIFTING encounter. Did you know? 0.0008 and its unique combination of tiny stories, sparklers and paper aeroplanes started life at BLUE, The Studio’s annual showcase of new work.

Love In (3) Parts

Young Muslim Playwriting Project

By John Shaw

Two evenings of exciting, diverse new writing

“Some days we are the birds in the sky and others we are the statues below them”.

Since September 2008 we have led taster workshops and one-to-one sessions with over 150 young Muslim playwrights, aged 16 - 25. Most had never before tried to write a play scene; all were keen to give it a try. We’ve held workshops at the Royal Exchange and in schools and community centres across Greater Manchester, and everyone who has taken part has been invited to submit their work to us.

lost dog theatre invite you to delve into the jaunty world of Claire and Paul as they try to progress from first date to last love. More akin to a live music video than a musical, lost dog have successfully blended together performance with live music, song and video to create a truly touching and unique take on an age old theme. ‘A wonderful show’ Yorkshire Post

We have put together two evenings of highlights presented as rehearsed readings by professional actors and theatre practitioners including Qas Hamid, Christine Hope and Sophia Rashid. The Search Party is supported by AGMA

The Missing Stories

The Fragility Of X

Created by the group Co-ordinated by Becky Prestwich

"It's ok, don't worry, we're fine, we're standing next to something so big, it makes you fall backwards."

How do stories find a home? Our regular group for 14 – 19 year olds has been meeting since Autumn 2008 to explore the creative and technical processes of making theatre. Through a programme of professional mentoring, workshops and ensemble-building sessions, they have developed skills in a wide range of theatre arts including writing, set design, lighting, sound design, performance and stage management. Inspired by Reinhardt Jung’s novel, Bambert’s Book of Missing Stories, the 30 group members have worked together to create this original piece of theatre.

When a woman and her teenage son reach breaking point, they set off on an extraordinary journey, away from their everyday lives and out, out, out into the world, where anything is possible. A beautiful and engaging work, unblinkingly unsentimental, funny, alarming and provocative. Developed by Manchester based theatre company Coal, in association with director John Wright from an idea by performer Annie Fitzmaurice. Suitable for ages 13+

The Young People’s Theatre Workshop is supported by The John Thaw Foundation.

Yet he soon discovers that a shadow lies over this secluded castle in the form of the Professor’s daughter, who disappeared some years before. Following a highly successful run at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Cochrane Theatre, London, Dumbshow’s energetic ensemble revive their wholly imaginative tale, with an original script, story and musical score, perfect for all the family.
