Exchange 2011 Spring~Summer

Welcome We’re celebrating great writing in our theatres this season. What makes a good play? A writer with something to say about the world we live in, who we are and who we might be with a style of saying it that turns a theatre into an exciting, exhilarating place to be. An existing play isn't the only way to make theatre. This season, we’re collaborating with Quarantine, one of the UK’s most innovative companies, on a devised piece of work commissioned especially for our Studio. Over this Spring/Summer we’re also inviting groups of people of all ages to participate in the world of theatre through our Education programme and through other exciting initiatives which we'll be announcing over the coming months. Our building is open all hours for you to come and experience interesting events or just to sit, relax and talk. We hope you can join us and look forward to seeing you. Braham Murray, Greg Hersov and Sarah Frankcom Artistic Directors

Private Lives By Noël Coward

The Theatre 23 February ~ 9 April 2011

Directed by Michael Buffong Designed by Ellen Cairns

Half Price Previews 23, 24, 25 February

“Let's be superficial and pity the poor Philosophers. Let's blow trumpets and squeakers, and enjoy the party as much as we can, like very small, quite idiotic children. Let's savour the delight of the moment.” Elyot and Amanda are divorced. Honeymooning with their new spouses, Sybil and Victor, at the same hotel they encounter each other one evening. Rekindling their passion, they decide to run away to Paris. But can Elyot and Amanda really be together? PRIVATE LIVES is Noël Coward’s most brilliant and sophisticated play. Full of dazzling dialogue, irresistible one-liners and coruscating wit, it explores the conventional and unconventional ways of being in love. Michael Buffong, who directed our acclaimed production of A RAISIN IN THE SUN directs. Think... HAY FEVER meets WHO'S AFRAID OF VIRGINIA WOOLF.

Two cousins from Sicily, relatives of Beatrice, come as illegal immigrants to stay in the Carbones’ home and find work on the docks. WORLD PREMIERE

A piece of theatre by Quarantine

The Studio 7 ~ 23 July

Directed by Richard Gregory Designed by Simon Banham Text by Sonia Hughes

Commissioned by the Royal Exchange Theatre, Sadler’s Wells and Curve Theatre, Leicester.

“We’ve got to make something out of nothing. And when the lights go down and the music stops, we’ve got to leave this place just as we found it......” ENTITLED is a piece of theatre about hope, privilege and disappointment. It’s about rights, and the wrongs that can deny them. It takes the form of a get-in and a get-out: the usually hidden process of transforming a theatre from an empty space into a stage for a show and back again. ENTITLED is Quarantine’s second collaboration with philosopher Dr Michael Brady.

ENTITLED is a co-production between Quarantine and the Royal Exchange Theatre. After Show Discussion Call Box Office for details Exchange Education Pre-show workshops Discussion group Online resources Find out more at royalexchange.co.uk/education

Quarantine is a Manchester-based theatre company that works all over the world. Their remarkable work confronts the here and now. It puts people who have never performed before side-by-side with virtuosos. The Guardian recently described them as “quite simply a marvel, a company that's right at the forefront of British theatre…” Think... There’s nothing else like it….

AT LARGE: DAVE ALLEN A JOURNEY THROUGH LIFE

Notes To Future Self

The Unlikely Tales of Molly Moonshine

Imagine waking up, but you’re not in your bed. Imagine waking up, realising you’ve been drugged and you’re tied to a stranger… a stranger you can’t see. Neither of you knows how you got there and neither of you knows how to escape. Tom and Kate can’t remember a thing…. not about the last few days anyway. Everything is a total blank, except for a halloumi kebab and a double-decker bus. As piece by piece they unravel their memories, each step brings them closer to knowing their captors, closer to their terrifying fate… and closer to each other. Thrills, abduction, pills, attraction, laughs, prescriptions........ and it's all sung. Following up the popular success of Love Shift in our PUB season last year, this Manchester based company presents a full length piece with their trademark exuberance and inventiveness.

By Kieran Cunningham & Steven McNicoll Dave Allen had a unique outlook on life. He had a keen eye for the day to day idiocies, a gift for storytelling and a passion for the absurd. This engaging one man performance explores the life and inimitable humour of a man acknowledged by many as the first alternative comedian. Performed by award-winning actor Kieran Cunningham, (best known at the Royal Exchange for his performance as Brendan in the award-winning show THE FLAGS) and co-written with BAFTA nominated Steven McNicoll (VELVET SOUP, LAUREL & HARDY, THE HOUSE), Dave Allen’s humour, outlook and his life are brought to the stage.

By Lucy Caldwell

By Brendan Murray “Judy’s my mom. It’s an understatement to say she’s a bit of a hippy. I mean who else but a New Ager calls their baby ‘Philosophy Rainbow’? I try to go by ‘Sophie’.” Sophie and Calliope have never been to school. Their mum ran away from home when she was seventeen and the girls have been raised in a series of ashrams, communes and impromptu raves. Then one day Sophie gets ill and the family has to return to Birmingham. Sophie and Calliope are introduced to a strange new world where meditation and tree-hugging are replaced with maths homework and television. They’re also introduced to Daphne: the grandmother that they’ve never met. And it’s against this bewildering new backdrop – the normality she’s always longed for – that Sophie must come to terms with her own mortality.

Meet Molly Moonshine, lady traveller and unreliable raconteuse. You won’t believe half of what she tells you: her tales are some of the tallest you will ever hear! But don't worry about that: just sit back and enjoy the fun as she dries her smalls and waxes lyrical about everything and nothing and plenty in between. A unique, interactive story-telling experience that will have you shaking your head in disbelief, wiping away a tear and smiling like a cat who’s got the cream as Molly remembers the ups and downs and curly bits that have shaped her extraordinary journey on the road of life. ‘Brendan Murray doesn’t miss a trick’ The Stage

We’re pleased to present this premiere from newly formed CunningPlan Productions looking at the life of a much neglected genius. This will be part of the Manchester Irish Festival.

A poignant new play from an award-winning writer and a strong creative team - The REP’s first visit to The Studio.

A welcome return for one of the UK’s leading theatre companies making work specifically for young people – an Easter treat for the young ones!

Pact Inspired by the story of DOCTOR FAUSTUS, the 70 members of our Young People’s Theatre Workshop set about asking themselves this question: What do you really want and how far would you go to get it? PACT is the result. Each evening brings you two different shorts, written, directed, designed and performed entirely by 14 – 19 year olds, and a scripted ensemble piece created in partnership with professional mentors, written by Becky Prestwich and directed by Kim Pearce and Andy Rogers. Together the plays in PACT paint a picture of the values, aspirations and fears of this group of young people. The core work of the Young People’s Theatre Workshop is supported by the John Thaw Foundation. Extensions to the 2010/11 Young People’s Theatre Workshop are supported by The Co-operative Foundation as part of their national grants programme, Truth about Youth.

The Interminable Suicide of Gregory Church Written and Performed by Daniel Kitson Gregory had 57 letters to write. He’d never written that many letters, not in one go. In fact, he’d never written a single letter and it was taking significantly longer than he’d anticipated. He’d started, full of optimism, curiously enough, at 9am and now here he was 8 hours later half way through letter 24. He glanced at his watch and then at the noose hanging over his head. Gregory sighed. Had he known how long suicide letters take, he thought, he wouldn’t have cancelled the milk for the morning. The story of a death postponed by life.

The Man Met Exchange Bunny By Jack Thorne Directed by Joe Murphy Designed by Hannah Clark

In 2011 we launch an annual collaboration between graduates from Manchester School of Theatre’s acting course and our own artistic team.

"I don't like thinking. But I do. Think. All the time."

We’ll put together a small company of the best emerging actors to perform a challenging new piece of work directed by Sarah Frankcom and Sam Pritchard.

Scorching heat. A fight. A car-chase. A siege. Feisty 18 year old Katie is thrust on a white-knuckle ride when her boyfriend is attacked on the street. Amidst the baying for blood and the longing for love, Katie is forced to decide her future. This award-winning, deeply personal new play is an unflinching, heartbreakingly vulnerable look at the complexities of growing up and the complications of racial diversity in Britain today.

Not just an exciting piece of theatre, this project will establish a bridge to the professional world for these actors at the beginning of their careers. Tickets: £5 / £3.50 Suitable for ages 14+
