Founder Ivan Hoe’s history is one of passion, private confidences, and unexpected journeys. Beginning his journey as a young sales man at a medal workshop in Singapore, his work took him to Europe where he had the opportunity to meet old medalist and craftsmen from the continent who were experts in the field of Orders, Medals, and Decorations. It was on one of his trips to England that he met the founder of an old medal house. This gentleman would eventually teach Ivan everything that he has yet to know about medals; from the difference between the honour systems of France and Britain, to the secret to achieving a flawless finishing in vitreous enamel. Benefiting from this new wealth of knowledge, Ivan Hoe soon found customers in Asia, the African continents, and Middle East regions. Three decades later, Ivan Hoe left his former employment to carve a name of his own. He founded ROYAL INSIGNIA, a luxury house designing and manufacturing Orders Medals and Decorations, Jewellery, Fine Gifts and Objet d’Art for members of the world’s Royal families and international ministries. Characterized by its exacting quality and elegant design incorporating aspects of its recipient’s culture and heritage, the house’s Orders, Medals, Decorations, and Swords have found dedicated patrons. Today, Ivan’s fount of experience is acknowledged by many around the world who share a deep appreciation of superlative artisanal skill.

Royal Insignia proves a cut above the rest | Siti Hajar | WITH the month of Syawal fast approaching and families across the Sultanate sprucing up their homes, decorations at the ready and plans in the making, people are perhaps looking at ways to make their abode just a bit more unique as they explore what the country has to offer in making this Hari Raya special. This year, thanks to Royal Insignia, an exclusive boutique, located at The Empire Hotel & Country Club, Bruneian households can add extra colour to their decor with the establishment’s new line of MiniFloral Objet that even on their own, are exquisite pieces of modern art. Delicately contoured by hand, with every petal shaped to the finest detail, the miniature pieces come in a variety of colours made out of specially sourced crystals, semi-precious stones such as rose quartz and amethyst and placed in gold to give each piece a regal feel to its high-end quality. “We don’t make these very often and it took many hours to make just one,” said Lisa Dass, General Manager of Royal Insignia, in an interview, with each piece telling different stories and their arrival bodes well with the Malay taste for softness that is evident in each objet. Since Royal Insignia made their debut in the Sultanate just about a year ago, the response to their presence has been highly encouraging, she said, with both local as well as international customers seeking their services that provide custom-made jewellery and fine gifts dreamed up by Asian and European designers. With just seven pieces available, each different from the rest, Dass is positive that Royal Insignia’s Mini-Floral Objet will become among their best sellers but also assured that they can be made-to-order should the need arise. “This way, Bruneians are given the choice for variety and we try our
best to bring in works made by our international partners as Bruneians need not go far as they search for the best in elegance, taste and subtlety.” As they continue to expand their market base, Royal Insignia has also introduced a line of jewellery for men whom, she said, have made enquiries about the products that the boutique has to offer. With a client base comprising mostly women especially for the boutique’s jewellery line, the interest from men, it was added, was something new and to cater to that demand, Dass explained that the designers were encouraged to search for ways to meet this seemingly growing demand. “This is very new to Royal Insignia and it has tested the skills of our team,” she shared, but despite their limited experience in men’s jewellery, the pieces that come in the form of rings and cufflinks set in white gold and diamond are a sight to behold. “They are one-of-a-kind and they weren’t easy tasks to create but we’ve managed to design them,” she said as they used stones such as ruby and blue topaz. As with their other line of products, Dass explained that their line for men can also be customised to suit their taste and herein, she said, lies their strength - to deliver their customers’ needs. For the much younger demographic, meanwhile, Royal Insignia has also added to their collection three Versace watches under the DV One Cruise collection flown in from Italy. “These are for those who are passionate about fashion,” she said, and the sapphire stones make these watches stand out even more when juxtaposed to the bright straps of blue, pink and yellow. The boutique’s openings are from 10.30am until 7pm from Monday to Sunday except for Friday’s and closes earlier at 5.30pm during the month of Ramadhan. They can be contacted at 2410227 or by e-mail at lisa@royalinsignia.com.
